1. Introduction

1.1 Engineered health rice

Rice is one of the leading food crops in the world and sustains two-third of the world’s population providing 20% of the world’s dietary energy supply. It can be polished and marketed as white rice or can be marketed with the bran layer left intact as brown rice. The dry grain can then be steamed or boiled by the consumer to rehydrate and cook it (Kato, 2006). Despite its primary importance as a staple food, rice has several disadvantages. Primarily, rice is low in protein and high in starch. The low protein levels in rice can lead to protein malnutrition in societies where rice is the primary constituent of the diet. Deficiencies in essential amino acids may also result from a diet primarily comprised of rice. For example, lysine is the essential amino acid found in the lowest quantity in rice. The human body needs lysine for proper growth and repair of tissues. It is also important in the production of various enzymes, hormones and disease-fighting antibodies (Kato, 2006). The production of broken rice is nearly 15-20% of total production of rice (Bhullar and Bhullar, 2013). The broken rice is generally used for rice flour production and Indian traditional foods such as Idli, Dosa and weaning foods etc. Ugwu et al., (2012) reported that the rice broken can be utilized for the production of poly (3-hydroxybutyrate). The major value addition of broken rice is possible by reconstructing it into rice-shape and fortifying it with desired nutrients or micronutrients, which is a big challenge in terms of making the product acceptable to the consumers.

One approach to overcome the above mentioned challenges is to prepare artificial rice kernels or rice analogues by extrusion, in which the vitamins are embedded and consequently do not separate from the rice grains. This will utilize mainly the broken rice which is either discarded or sold at subsidized prices as the cattle feed. Furthermore, embedding makes extraction of the vitamin by rinsing or cooking more difficult and may provide a certain protection against oxidation, because the vitamins can be enveloped by a protective matrix (Steiger, 2010). The fortification of commercially produced staple foods allows exposed populations to benefit without making major changes to their eating habits (Kunz, 2009).The rice analogues prepared from extrusion can be used by addition of an appropriate proportion of water at a temperature ranging from 90°C-100°C, whereupon the rice product rehydrates within three minutes to obtain a product having the desired appearance and organoleptic properties to simulate natural rice grains (Harrow and Martin, 1982).

Abstract

With recent advances in molecular biology and rapid developments in new analytical techniques, engineering of microbes for the bioremediation processes has been extensively studied as recombinant microbes can degrade various toxic pollutants effectively. The prospect of microbial engineering has greater potentialities for agriculture and environmental applications and this may provide us deeper insight in understanding the microbial interactions and biotransformation processes. Though much work has been carried out on bioremediation using genetically engineered microorganisms, its application is restricted to environment due to the concerns of health and environment over ecosystem. Nevertheless, evaluation of risk assessment has also been carried out in order to ascertain the potential benefits of transgenic microbes.

Introduction

Growing waste production globally is a serious threat to a sustainable ecosystem. A World Bank analysis estimates that in 2016 alone, cities globally produced over 2.01 billion tonnes of solid waste or 0.74 kg per person each day. The amount of waste generated annually is predicted to rise by 78% from 2019 levels to 3.40 billion tonnes in 2050 due to fast urbanisation and growing populations (Chandra Paul et al., 2019). The wastes include radioactive substances, agricultural wastes, food wastes, industrial wastes, municipal wastes, garbage, paper waste etc. The extensive use of land for commercial, industrial, and residential reasons has resulted in a decline in the amount of open ground available for waste disposal. Proper waste collection, transportation, recycling, and disposal must be done to decrease the amount of waste on earth. To manage waste in developing nations and urban areas sustainably, integrated waste management systems that are effective, economical, efficient, and socially inclusive are crucial.

Progress of any nation is driven by human curiosity and ingenuity. Engineering is one profession that has shown humanity the ways to meet its needs. It made the forces of nature work for the good of mankind. The biggest challenge for engineering profession has been its integration with the human needs. Engineering transforms technical conscience into applied realities. On the one hand, engineers are not limited by technology, and on the other, they are worried about the risks to the environment, health, sustenance and safety.

Engineer is a composite; “He is not a scientist, he is not a mathematician, he is not a sociologist or a writer; but he may use the knowledge and techniques of any or all of these disciplines in solving engineering problems.” Engineering in the broadest sense, relates to the “development, acquisition and application of technical, scientific and mathematical knowledge about the understanding, design, development, invention, innovation and use of materials, machines, structures, systems and processes for specific purposes.” Engineer works under various constraints: nature, cost, safety, environment, ergonomics, reliability, manufacturability and maintainability, among others.

This is how Neil Armstrong described himself, “I am, and ever will be, a white- socks, pocket-protector, nerdy engineer — born under the second law of thermodynamics, steeped in the steam tables, in love with free-body diagrams, transformed by Laplace, and propelled by compressible flow.”

Remote sensing can be a useful tool in engineering geological investigations, particularly in the identification and characterization of geological features and hazards.

Some of the ways that remote sensing can be used in engineering geological investigations include:

Geological mapping: Remote sensing data can be used to create detailed maps of the geological features in an area, including rock formations, faults, and folds. This information can be used to identify potential hazards, such as landslides and rockfalls, and to plan engineering projects accordingly.

Landslide detection and monitoring: Remote sensing data, such as satellite imagery, can be used to detect landslides and monitor their movement over time. This information can help engineers to design and implement appropriate stabilization measures.

Ground deformation monitoring: Remote sensing techniques, such as Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR), can be used to detect ground deformation caused by geological processes such as subsidence, uplift, and faulting. This information can be used to identify potential hazards and plan engineering projects accordingly.

34. GEOPHYSICAL METHODS

This chapter gives important and useful methods for measurement of seismic signals.

Firstly a brief introduction of seismic signals is given. The P waves, S waves and L-waves are discussed in short.

The old methods of measuring seismic signals like mechanical geophones are replaced by electronic geophones. The discussion includes Electromagnetic type, Reluctance type, Capacitive type and pressure type of basic geophones. New methods of damping are included. New Recently developed amplifiers and filters are also included. Development in oscillographic elements and cameras are discussed. Other information includes, the recently reported Array Technology and Space Technology for measurement of seismic signals.

Abstract

In India, the allium groups (onion and garlic) are important bulb crops for home consumption as well as sources of income to many peasant farmers in many parts of the country. The garlic bulbs are valued for their flavor and have wide applications in food and their antimicrobial, antifungal, insecticidal and antioxidative properties. The engineering properties of garlic bulb, clove and skin plays important role in the planning of various post-harvest operations like drying, sorting, grading, bulb breaking, peeling and designing the process equipments like bulb breaker, clove separator and peeler. The aim of this chapter was to study the engineering properties viz., physical, mechanical, aerodynamic and frictional properties of garlic bulbs, and cloves in both peeled and unpeeled form.

Introduction

India is rightly the spice bowl of the world. India has the largest domestic market for spices in the world. Indian spices are the most sought-after globally, given their exquisite aroma, texture and taste. Garlic (Allium sativum L.) is a world’s favourite, versatile horticultural commodity consumed for culinary, medicinal and antimicrobial purposes and is being cultivated for over 5000 years. The most important part of the garlic plant is the compound bulb. Each bulb is made of 6-26 cloves and is wrapped in a white papery sheath. Some varieties have a radish or purplish sheath. The bulbs are valued for their flavour, command extensive commercial importance because of their wide application in food and pharmaceutical preparations. Garlic is still probably nature’s most powerful medicinal plant to us today. It is recognized to have remarkable preventive and curative abilities. Garlic is mainly used aromatic spices and pickles as it has digestive, carminative and anti-rheumatic properties. It is being used in ayurvedic formulation since a long for curing lungs, healing the intestinal ulcer and checking muscular pain and giddiness.

ABSTRACT

An efficient and reliable micropropagation and mycorrhization techniques were established for a medicinal plant Solanum trilobatum L., using internodal explant. Callus formation occurred from both the cut ends of explants cultured on MS medium supplemented with 2,4-D (3.0 mg/l). Direct shoot and multiple shoot formation were noticed from the proximal cut end of explants on BA (2.0 mg/l) alone and BA (2.0 mg/ l) + NAA (0.5 mg/l). Root formation was directly induced from the basal cut end of explants cultured on IBA (1.0 mg/l). In vitro plantlet regeneration has been achieved on BA (2.0 mg/l) + IBA (1.0 mg/l). After 4 weeks, well-developed in vitro plantlets were hardened in plastic cups filled with sterile soil and vermiculite (3:1). During acclimatization, sterile Arbuscular Mycorrhizal (AM) fungal spores were added for enhance the survivability of in vitro plants in the field condition. The level of biochemical changes and increased survivability were studied in 10 weeks old plants inoculated with spores of Glomus mosseae and Gigaspora margarita.

ABSTRACT

The tomato TYLCV tolerant line MP-1 which has high efficiency of crossability & dwarf mutant dg/dg (Manapal) were choosen for the study of enhanced production of plantlets through tissue culture. The cotyledonary explants, hypocotyl sections & decapitated seedlings were taken to assess the regeneration efficiency of the explants as a base for efficient genetic transformation. The decapitated seedlings regenerated much faster (9.3 days) putting forth new sprouts of shootlets which were then transferred to rooting medium. Whereas cotyledonary leaves showed regeneration of plantlets (18.3 days) which is almost double the duration of decapped seedlings. The hypocotyl sections proliferated into callus & regenerated in a much slower rate (27 days). Hence, the faster rate of regeneration from decapitated seedlings served as a efficient base for enhanced production of plantlets during transformation studies. Also the number of harvest of new sprouts (2.3 regenerations) from decapitated seedlings is an added advantage for deriving more plantlets from single seedlings.

Introduction

From centuries, mankind is totally dependent on plants as a source of carbohydrates, proteins and fats for their food & shelter. In addition, plants are valuable source of a wide range of metabolites, which are used as pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, flavors, fragrances, colors, biopesticides and food additives. In 1985, 3500 new chemical structures have been identified and 2600 derived from the higher plants. Worldwide, 121 clinically useful prescription drugs are derived from plants. Even today, 75% of the world’s population relies on plants for traditional medicine. In the US, where chemical synthesis dominates the pharmaceutical industry, 25% of the pharmaceuticals are based on plant-derived chemicals.

Biotechnology offers an opportunity to exploit the cell, tissue, organ or entire organism by growing them in-vitro and to genetically manipulate them to get desired compounds. Since the world population is increasing rapidly, there is extreme pressure on the available cultivable land to produce food and fulfill the needs. Therefore, for other uses such as production of pharmaceuticals and chemicals from plants, the available land should be used effectively. Chemical engineers are currently developing improved and appropriate bioreactors for the improvement of production systems by adopting techniques of growth and metabolite production coupled with downstream processing of the products. The improvements in molecular biological research have given a new dimension to in-vitro culture as well as for plant improvement, enhancing the yields of the product and resulting in multiple products or producing novel products from genetically engineered plants. Moreover, the need for safer drugs without side effects has led to the use of natural ingredients with proven safety. These factors have laid emphasis on the use of biotechnological methods to enhance the production of pharmaceuticals and food additives in quality and quantity.

Plant in vitro cultures are able to produce and accumulate many medicinally valuable secondary metabolites. Antioxidants are an important group of medicinal preventive compounds as well as being food additives inhibiting detrimental changes of easily oxidizable nutrients. Many different in vitro approaches have been used for increased biosynthesis and the accumulation of antioxidant compounds in plant cells. Antioxidants are capable of stabilizing, or deactivating, free radicals before they attack cells. Antioxidants are absolutely critical for maintaining optimal cellular and systemic health and well-being. Antioxidants are gaining a lot of importance as a panacea for a large number of life-style diseases like aging, cancer, diabetes, cardiovascular and other degenerative diseases etc. The present lecture summarizes the achievements of in vitro technology for the production of antioxidants compounds. The focus will be on the major chemical classes of antioxidants and on the approaches used to improve the in vitro methods for producing these compounds.

ABSTRACT

Ophiorrhiza mungos is a rich source of the potent antineoplastic therapeutic agent Camptothecin, which is effective in the complete remission of lung, breast, uterine and cervical cancer. With increasing demand, most of the plants have been indiscriminately exploited from their natural habitat for the isolation of this valuable therapeutic agent. The biotechnological application such as plant tissue culture seems to be a viable option for the production of this high value therapeutic compound without destroying the natural flora. For this purpose various tissue culture techniques have been established to enhance the production of this compound from different parts of O. mungos. The present study revealed that the Physical elicitation with varying doses of irradiation is significantly higher (0.87mg/ g dry weight) than that obtained by chemical elicitation using methyle jasmonate (0.41mg/ g dry weight) compared to control. Biotic elicitors like chitin, chitosan, fungal and bacterial extracts were also used and considerable increase in the production of Camptothecin was obtained in all these cases. Permeabilization with Tween 20 found to be enhancing the exudation of camptothecin (0.021 mg/ml) compared to control (0.0003mg/ml). Hence, the present study gives an alternative for large scale production of camptothecin without affecting the natural flora in a cost effective method.

Introduction
The growing population has a direct impact on fisheries. The demand for food derived from aquatic origin is increasing rapidly. The fish production trend and world population over the years are shown in Figures 1 and 2, respectively.The production from culture-based fisheries has surpassed the capture-based fisheries (FAO, 2024). Global aquaculture production is one of the fastestgrowing
sectors among global food systems. With the increasing demand for fish and seafood, there is increasing pressure to find sustainable solutions for feeding farmed fish (Tacon et al., 2011). Traditional fish feed, primarily derived from wild-caught fish (Fishmeal) and land-based crops, presents several environmental and economic challenges. These include overfishing, deforestation, and rising feed costs, which threaten the sustainability of the aquaculture industry. Hence, there is an urgent need for alternate feed ingredients (Olsen and Hasan, 2012).
The feed has largest environmental impact in the intensive culture system. Hence, more prominence has to be given to a selection of fish feed ingredients, which can contribute to reduce the environmental impact and target on growth of the animal. Intensification should go in hand with sustainability of the system and feed ingredients play a significant role in it. In response to these concerns, microorganisms have emerged as a promising solution to enhance fish nutrition in a more sustainable manner. Microorganisms, such as bacteria, yeast, algae, and fungi, can be a source of feed ingredients with various advantages, including improving nutrient digestibility, and reducing the environmental footprint of fish farming.

Introduction

The COVID 19 pandemic is threatening food systems and international food security. According to the World Food Programme (WFP), that says the amount of individuals facing crisis hunger is anticipated to virtually double this year to 265 million. Already, quite 820 million individuals don’t get enough food to eat, and another a hundred thirty five million individuals face acute hunger or starvation. The key factor of sustainability in the animal sector depends upon genetic improvement in domestic livestock. There are many reproductive and molecular biotechnologies used for the genetic improvement of domestic livestock and they are synergistically coupled with the breeding program in distinct breeding targets. With the help of gene editing techniques (e.g. CRISPR etc.). To improve the specific traits of interest scientists can add, delete or replace the nucleotides (e.g. milk production, meat production, disease resistance, etc.) in less than one generation. Gene editing with the conventional breeding program in livestock is an important factor for genetic improvement for increasing the rate of genetic gain. In the present topic, here, we delved into the most important reproductive and molecular technologies used in livestock genetic improvement, as well as the most effective ways for incorporating gene editing into existing genetic improvement programmes and targeting specific traits for enhancement. The improvement in genetic level is a most powerful part of sustainable animal development because it is permanent and the effects are long-lasting and cumulative. Genetic advancements produced in one generation are passed on to the following, unlike dietary and animal health treatments, which are a continuous process. The many livestock operations that involve chemical and mechanical methods such as dehorning requires time, worker, money, animal safety, etc., but their genetic alternation of the concerned gene for the polled or hornless condition can exclude the requirement of physical dehorning. (Gottardo et al. 2011; Tompson et al. 2017).

1. Introduction

Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) has transformed the functioning of modern libraries in the 21st century. The applications of ICT to data, information and knowledge resources have given rise to data centers, digital libraries, and knowledge repositories. New software’s that are based on international standards have emerged to undertake a wide range of jobs that suit the requirements of individual libraries. Rapid advances in the application of ICT have given rise to ‘Open Standards and Open Source Software’s. Libraries can benefit a great deal now by using these standards and software, as during the last twenty five years only rich libraries could afford to use commercial software. As a result the transformation of libraries was not universal in India. Now with the advent of open source software, we are expecting many libraries are going to be modernized. This transformation is not going to be limited to libraries only but to users as well who belong to different disciplines and walks of life due to social networking which is emerging as a major activity of libraries around the world. Introduction

To meet the food needs of the burgeoning population, India will need to produce 300 million tonnes of food grains by 2020. At present more than 75% of the total food grains produced in the country are of rice and wheat. Use of nitrogenous fertilizers has contributed much to the remarkable increase in production of rice and wheat in India that has occurred during the past three decades. During the last half-decade or so while fertilizer N consumption is touching new heights, the production of both rice and wheat is showing a trend of plateauing.

Introduction

Soil resource is as important as water for agriculture as it supplies nutrients to the plants and anchorage for stand and establishment. However, people least bother about its importance despite its role in food security and ecosystem services. Good quality soil is a prerequisite for sustainable crop production. The concept of conservation agriculture (CA) has emerged in the recent past wherein conventional practices are modified to reduce farming cost in addition to sustaining soil health. Improvement in the soil health is achieved by increasing soil organic carbon (SOC), aggregation, infiltration, and also reduction in soil erosion.

Conventional fertilizers often exhibit low nutrient-use efficiency, resulting in nutrient losses, soil degradation, water contamination and unnecessary production costs. Nano-fertilizers offer controlled and targeted nutrient delivery through formulations engineered at the nanoscale. Their high surface-area-to-volume ratio can improve nutrient availability, plant uptake, growth, bulb quality and storage performance while reducing conventional fertilizer requirements. This chapter explains the nature, modes of action and potential benefits of nano-fertilizers in onion production. It also considers nano-biofertilizers, smart nutrient-delivery systems and nano-sensors. Particular attention is given to manufacturing cost, nanotoxicity, effects on soil microorganisms, farmer accessibility and the need for standardized safety and regulatory frameworks.

Abstract
Horticulture comprising a variety of fruits, vegetables, ornamental and medicinal crops has emerged in the recent times as a key sector of the Indian economy contributing substantially towards enhanced income, employment and welfare of the rural poor. A visible shift is seen in crop diversification across regions in favour of horticultural crops, especially vegetables over traditional cropping pattern comprising of cereals and pulses, since early 90s. Definitely higher profitability has been identified in comparison to cereals, increased urbanisation, enhanced living standards, besides the growing awareness for balanced nutrition as the main reason for such a shift. Commensurate with this trend has been a visible shift in enhanced R&D investments into horticultural R&D both from the public and private sectors. There is a growing need for the public sector research organisations like ICAR to increase their visibility and promote public private partnerships through innovative methods of research and development at this juncture.

Seed is the basic input in agriculture that acts as a catalyst for realising the full production potential of the high yielding/improved varieties. The role of quality seed in agriculture has been recognized since the ancient periods. It is a well established fact that among all the agricultural inputs, use of quality seed alone can enhance the crop production up to 15-20 per cent, depending upon the crop, and it can be further raised up to 45 per cent with efficient management of other inputs. If the seed sown is of inferior quality, the efforts of the plant breeders in developing and introducing improved varieties would be rendered futile. Modern agriculture lays great emphasis that each and every seed should germinate readily with full potential and produce vigorous seedlings to ensure high yields.

India has witnessed a phenomenal increase in food grains production since Independence, and achieved a record harvest of about 259 million tonnes in 2011-12. Similarly, there was an impressive record production of pulses : 18.1 and 17.2 million tonnes in 2010-11 and 2011-12,  respectively. However, to meet the increasing demand of the continuously rising population, about 2 to 3 million tonnes of pulses have to be imported every year costing the country about Rs.3000 crores in foreign exchange. Despite the changes in the dietary habits, pulses in India are still considered an important source of proteins, particularly, for the poor. However, the per capita availability of pulses has been declining over time decreasing from 60.7 gm/day in 1951 to about 32 gm/day in 2010 mainly due to stagnant production (except in recent years), rising demand for consumption and other uses. Further, pulses play an even greater role in maintaining and enhancing soil fertility through nitrogen (N₂) fixation.

Abstract

India’s livestock sector is one of the largest in the world. It has 56.7% of world’s buffaloes, 12.5% cattle, 20.4% small ruminants, 2.4% camel, 1.4 % equine, 1.5% pigs and 3.1% poultry. Dairy Entrepreneurship can be one of the important subsidiary occupations for farmers in rural areas. Since agriculture happens to be mostly seasonal in nature, thereby providing employment opportunities for the people on seasonal basis, there is a possibility of finding employment for many persons throughout the year through dairy farming. The farm income can be enhanced through this subsidiary activity.

Introduction

India’s policy in agriculture sector began in 1950 with a conscious effort to meet out the food needs of Indian population in view of famines but later on shifted to develop the agriculture education and research system for enhancing the productivity of staple crops and develop competent human resource to build skilled man power to strengthen agriculture and solve the problem of food & nutritional security at the nation level (1960,s to 1990,s) to the solution of global problems in agriculture through global solutions (2000,s onward) by forging the regional and global international corporation at different levels.

In the twenty first century, science and technology are viewed as the drivers of Indian economic growth; and agricultural R&D is expected to play a significant role in the process. Agriculture research and development is being affected by research and development at international level.

As early as in the 18^th century, the anaerobic process of decomposing organic waste was known. During 19^th century, it became clear that anaerobic bacteria are involved in the decomposition process (DST, 1981). Since that time, the applications of anaerobic digestion have grown steadily, in both its microbiological and chemical aspects. The process of anaerobic digestion possesses a double advantage i.e. the process in addition to providing good quality manure also supplies a large volume of combustible gas. Anaerobic digestion provides some exciting possibilities and solutions to such concerns as alternative energy production, handling of human, animal, municipal and Agro-industrial wastes safely, controlling environmental pollution and expanding food supplies. The technology of anaerobic digestion (Kumar et al., 2015) has not yet realized its full potential for manure and energy production even in developed and industrialized countries. In developing countries expansion of this technology has been hindered because of the need for better economic initiatives, organized supervision, proper training and education.

During twentieth century, the method of anaerobic fermentation or digestion was successfully applied by sewage chemists. A considerable amount of research work was carried out by sewage chemists on different aspects of the digestion process and sludge digestion plant, were installed. The gas produced was used for burning as domestic fuel, operating machinery and for tractors. In this context, the studies on anaerobic digestion of cattle dung and vegetable waste has been important. The work is particularly important ones in the Indian context as long as gas production and plant design efforts are concerned. For research on anaerobic digestion energy part (methane generation) received more attention since the early decades of this century when research into bio digestion had gradually begun to take shape. Fertilizer aspect received occasional attention a couple of decades later. The engineering and micro biological aspects of gas production remain a dominant preoccupation even up to 1990s. Emphasis on the energy aspect still dominates in many parts of the world today.

The daily nutrient requirements of animals varies for various stages of life i.e. maintenance ration, growing, working, pregnant, lactating, dry and diseased animals ration. Maintenance ration contains the vitamins and mineral only for life without any other production, while during pregnancy and lactation their requirements changed drastically from the maintenance ration. If not supply the standard amount of vitamins and minerals during these stages may disturb the metabolism and ultimately cause the production or metabolic disease. Therefore, the proper and sufficient (as per standard requirements) supplementation of vitamins and minerals can help in the prevention and control of production diseases in livestock.

Introduction

Precision farming is a site-specific farming method that works on a large scale, while IFS divides the whole land into fragments. Both Precision farming and IFS work on the concept of “no wastage”. When we install some components of precision farming in IFS, such as remote sensors, yield mapping, SSNM, yield monitors, and some others, the yield and quality of output increase. Initially, farmers may not get much profit from them because their installation cost is very high, but after a while, they earn more profit from this. IFS are good for Indian farmers because many enterprises are connected to each other in IFS, and farmers can get income from different sources. It generates employment opportunities for other farmers. It’s good for those with less land, and when we include PF in IFS, entrepreneurship opportunities are generated for educators like farming device installation, operation, maintenance and many others.

Improving the skill set of individuals is an important agenda of any development organization. The individuals may be anyone in the system who is directly or indirectly connected to the system.  Agriculture System is a complex and multi-stakeholder system with farmers as the axis of the wheel with other stakeholders’ forms part of spokes of the wheel. The scope for capacity building or training of every stakeholder has been peaking tremendously given the ever changing nature of the profession. The public and private training Institutions are vying with each other for conducting trainings in order to sustain the existence of the Institutions. Though a few institutions are really trying hard to take the technologies in real terms to the farming community, the following observations are very difficult to be masked.

The growing adoption of Generative AI in education offers substantial benefits in personalization, content creation, assessment, tutoring, and administrative efficiency, but it also introduces significant ethical, legal, and pedagogical challenges. This chapter examines the principles and practices required for responsible application of GenAI across educational environments. It focuses on algorithmic bias, fairness, data privacy, academic integrity, intellectual property, transparency, accountability, and the digital divide. AI models trained on large datasets may reproduce historical stereotypes or generate inaccurate and discriminatory content, potentially affecting marginalized learners. The extensive collection and processing of student information also raises concerns about informed consent, data storage, security, and appropriate use. Generative AI challenges traditional concepts of authorship and academic integrity because students may use AI to produce essays, assignments, and other academic work. The chapter discusses institutional policies, ethical audits, transparent content moderation, teacher and student AI literacy, human oversight, and multi-stakeholder governance. International principles such as UNESCO and IEEE guidance are considered as foundations for responsible implementation. The chapter emphasizes that trustworthy educational AI must remain human-centered, transparent, inclusive, accountable, and continuously evaluated.

8.1 Introduction

Earth’s temperature has increased significantly due to the rise in concentration of greenhouse gases in its atmosphere. Naturally occurring greenhouse gases include water vapour (H₂O), carbon dioxide (CO₂), methane (CH₄), nitrous oxide (N₂O) and ozone (O₃). Prior to industrial revolution, the amount of greenhouse gases released into the atmosphere matched what could be absorbed by the natural sinks. Industrialization catapulted the addition of anthropogenically emitted gases to the environment, much beyond the natural levels. These greenhouse gases are building up, thus creating the effect of ‘global warming’. Global warming is a consequence of two major phenomena - depletion of the ozone layer and increase in greenhouse gas emission (Ishler, 2008).

16.1 Entering Biological Data into Computer

After the forms have been designed, the database in ready for entry of biological data. Biological data is entered one record at a time. To enter the biological data, the user issues a command, which calls up and displays the appropriate form with blank fields. The user then keys in the data for each field in the appropriate spaces. In this manner, the user enters the data for the first record, then for the second record, and so on. In most database systems, the records are automatically assigned a number as they are entered.

16.2 Saving Biological Data into Computer

While entering data into the fields, the tab key or enter key is usually used to move to the next field. Pressing enter or tab key in the last field on the form saves the record in the database and moves to a new, blank form for the next record to be entered. In addition to using the tab or enter key to move forward through fields, one can directly go to any field on the form at any time by clicking on it with the mouse.

Abstract

As part of the Enterprise Information Portal (EIP) project, an Enterprise-wide Geographic Information System has been implemented through which Intranet / Internet users enjoying different access levels can quickly search for, locate and visualize geoscientific information generated by Geological Survey of India (GSI). The proposed system will provide real-time response to information needs and will use secure Internet technology to deliver information to bonafide users. It consists of an application that will enable data owners to load new data sets, update/replace existing data sets in a highly secure environment, load and maintain metadata about their data sets in a Data Catalog and a subsystem that will query, search, locate and display geoinformation stored in the centralized Geodatabase.

Enterprise GIS has been deployed primarily using a relational database, a spatial database engine tool, an Internet Map server tool, and integrating the existing ArcGIS desktop GIS clients. The approach is to import data from distributed data sources into the centralized repository using a customized extraction-transformation-loading (ETL) tool, thereby making appropriate structural changes to ensure homogeneity at various levels, and load into the main Geodatabase.

While delineating the functionalities of enterprise GIS solution an earnest attempt was made to accommodate the diverse needs of the organization, including its processes, activities, products and the whole gamut of users at different levels from the field geologist to the decision makers. An effort was also made to standardize various data automation processes and to iron out the heterogeneities existing in legacy data. Ultimately, GSI aspires to create a seamless geospatial database for the entire geographic extent of the country, which can be easily shared by the geoscientific community.

The arthropods made their appearance during the earliest Devonian period while humans appeared only in Quarternary. Insects possess an immense degree of evolutionary maturity as against man, account for more than two-thirds of all known organisms, date back some 400 million years, and have many kinds of interactions with humans and other forms of life on earth. Entomology is a speciality within the field of biology and it is rooted in all human cultures from prehistoric times.

• More number of species: In the animal kingdom more than 85 per cent of the species belongs to insect group. Total number of insects described so far is more than 9 lakhs.
• Large number of individuals in a single species: e.g., Locust swarm comprising of 109 number of individuals, occupying large area.
• Great variety of habitats: Insects thrive well under varied conditions.
• Long geological history: Insects were known to occupy this earth for more than 350 million years, which is a good track record. This has given the insects’ great variety of adoptions under different conditions.

The scientific community working in the field of crop protection is experiencing an increasing academic and industrial interest in the discovery and development of new bio-insecticides as environmentally friendly pest control tools to be integrated, in combination or rotation, with chemicals in pest management programmes. In this context, Entomopathogenic nematodes (EPNs) as a bio-control agent have proven successful and are now commercially mass produced in six of the seven continents to treat pest problem in agriculture, horticulture and forest crops. They actively search for the host, including those in cryptic habitat stages of insect pests in soil environment. They can be considered as good candidates for integrated pest management in ustainable agriculture due to plants and mammals which are not adversely affected and have ease of mass production. We present a general overview on the current state of knowledge of EPN and their mutualistically associated bacteria and their utilization as biological control agent against insect pests in world and India are briefly presented in this chapter.

5.1 Mass Multiplication Techniques
Entomopathogenic nematodes (EPNs) are currently produced by different methods either in vivo or in vitro (solid and liquid culture) (Friedman, 1990). Each approach has its advantages and disadvantages relative to production cost, technical know-how required, economy of scale, and product quality, and each approach has the potential to be improved. Following production, a variety of formulation and application alternatives are also available (Shapiro- Ilan et al., 2012). Mass multiplication of EPNs can be achieved through in vivo (using insect hosts) and in vitro (using artificial media) methods, with the latter being more efficient for large-scale production.
1. In Vivo Multiplication
Method: Involves rearing insect hosts (like Galleria mellonella or Corcyra cephalonica) and infecting them with EPNs, allowing the nematodes to multiply within the host’s cadaver.

• Rearing of insect hosts.
• Inoculation of host larvae with EPNs.
• Collection of dead, infected larvae.
• Extraction of infective juveniles (IJs) from the cadavers using methods like the White trap.
