Cereal grains and cereal by-products
The appropriate nutrition of livestock necessitates the inclusion of a specific proportion of cereals and their byproducts. For poultry and swine, cereals constitute the primary element of their daily dietary intake. Consequently, there exists a direct competition for these cereal resources between livestock and humans. Specifically, only 2% of rice and wheat, 5% of sorghum, 10% of barley and maize, and 50% of bajra and ragi are allocated for animal feed.
Cereals belong to the Gramineae family and are classified as annual plants (Khariff). These grains are primarily composed of carbohydrates, with starch being the predominant component of their dry matter, concentrated in the endosperm. Cereal grains are abundant in TDN and net energy, making them highly palatable to livestock. The DCP content ranges from 7% to 10%, while TDN levels fall between 70% and 80% for ruminants. In non-ruminants, such as pigs and poultry, these energy-rich grains can be incorporated into their diets at proportions of approximately 50% to 70%.
Structure of a grain: Grain kernels are referred to as caryopses. Those grains that possess husks, such as oats, barley and rice, are classified as covered caryopses, while grains that lack husks, including maize, wheat, rye, and sorghum, are termed naked caryopses. Each kernel, excluding the husk, consists of two primary components: the pericarp and the seed.
Pericarp: This structure is composed of two distinct layers. The outer layer, which includes the epidermis and hydroderm, is collectively known as the beeswing. The inner layer of the pericarp is characterized by the presence of cross cells and tube cells.
Seed: The seed is further divided into four components: the seed coat, hyaline layer, endosperm, and germ (embryo). When the grain undergoes processing that removes both the germ and the starch endosperm, the remaining parts of the seed along with the pericarp are referred to as bran.

Plants and many agro-industrial by-products incorporated into livestock diets may harbor a range of anti-nutritional compounds. These substances can adversely affect optimal nutrition by deactivating specific nutrients, obstructing the digestive process, or diminishing the metabolic efficiency of feed, ultimately leading to negative consequences for animal health and productivity. The naturally occurring plant compounds found in feed that disrupt feed utilization (FCR), lower production levels, and compromise animal health are referred to as anti-nutritional factors. Additionally, natural toxicants present in feed can hinder the absorption and utilization of nutrients in livestock. Therefore, it is essential to implement effective detoxification methods for these feed materials to mitigate toxic effects and ensure their safe incorporation into animal diets. A foundational understanding of these toxicants is crucial prior to undertaking detoxification and subsequent use in livestock feeding.
Natural toxicants can be categorized based on their chemical properties into several groups: Proteins, Glycosides, Phenols, and Miscellaneous toxicants. The chemical characteristics, pathogenic effects, and detoxification strategies for these compounds are briefly outlined below.
Proteins
1. Protease inhibitors: Protease inhibitors are prevalent throughout the plant kingdom, particularly in the seeds of many cultivated legumes. These inhibitors possess the capability to obstruct the function of proteolytic enzymes in the gastrointestinal systems of animals. Specifically, trypsin inhibitors form irreversible complexes with trypsin, rendering the enzyme unable to fulfill its role in protein digestion. This interaction prompts the intestine to secrete cholecystokinin, which in turn stimulates pancreatic enlargement. The presence of trypsin inhibitors in raw soybean can hinder the availability of methionine, leading to adverse effects in young chickens fed raw soybean meal,
including pancreatic hypertrophy, reduced growth rates, gallbladder contraction and increased bile acid excretion, similar to observations in other monogastric animals. In contrast, ruminants can effectively utilize untreated leguminous seeds. Consequently, the amino acids that would typically be released by trypsin are not reabsorbed, leading to their loss when trypsin interacts with these inhibitors. These substances, which are proteinaceous in nature, hinder the activity of certain digestive enzymes, ultimately impairing the growth and performance of non-ruminant animals. High concentrations of protease inhibitors are found in various leguminous seeds, such as soybean, kidney bean and mung bean. There are two primary types of protease inhibitors: a) Kunitz inhibitors, which possess a single active site that binds exclusively to trypsin and b) Bowman-Birk inhibitors, which contain two active sites that can bind both trypsin and chymotrypsin, thereby inhibiting both enzymes. Detoxification: These protease inhibitors are primarily heat-sensitive and appropriate heat treatment of leguminous seeds-such as roasting, toasting, popping, autoclaving (at 120°C and 15 lbs psi for 20 minutes), and cooking-can effectively inactivate them. It is important to avoid overheating during these processes.

Introduction
Heat treatment is the most commonly used method in the dairy industry for milk processing. Its primary objective is to eliminate pathogens and reduce spoilage-causing organisms, ensuring milk is safe for consumption and has a longer shelf life. While advanced methods like high-pressure processing, pulsed electric fields, ultrasound processing, cold plasma treatment, and ultraviolet sterilization have emerged, heat treatment remains the preferred choice due to its simplicity, reliability, and proven effectiveness. All dairy products undergo some form of heating during processing, whether through pasteurization, sub-pasteurization (e.g., for milk used in aged cheeses), or sterilization. To facilitate this, liquid heating systems such as continuous heat exchangers or jacketed tanks are widely used, typically powered by steam or steam-heated water. Consequently, steam generation boilers are a standard feature in almost all dairy processing facilities.
The Key Objectives of Heat Treatment Include
1. Elimination of harmful pathogens in milk, ensuring it is safe for consumption and protecting public health.
2. Increasing the keeping quality of milk by reducing the number of spoilage organisms.
3. Inactivating enzymes naturally present in milk or secreted by microorganisms to prevent enzymatic degradation.
4. Preventing the autoxidation of lipids, which can lead to off-flavors and spoilage.
5. Inactivating agglutinin to reduce rapid creaming and maintain uniform consistency.
6. Enhancing the growth of starter cultures by eliminating natural inhibitors and dissolved oxygen in milk, essential for producing cheese and fermented products.

Sterilization is a thermal process aimed at destroying all microorganisms and microbial spores in milk, ensuring the product is microbiologically safe and shelf-stable at room temperature for extended periods. It is primarily used in the production of sterilized milk and evaporated milk, with typical conditions involving heating at 116°C for 15 minutes. This process kills all microorganisms and also inactivates all milk enzymes, including plasmin, which might otherwise contribute to spoilage during storage. However, enzymes produced by psychrotrophic bacteria should not be present in raw milk, as they are highly heat-stable and may remain active even after sterilization. Sterilized milk can be stored at room temperature for longer period. Sterilization kills all microorganisms and inactivates all microbial spores that may germinate under the storage conditions of the product in the market.
The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) define “sterilization” in relation to milk and milk products as the process of heating the product in a sealed container continuously to at least 115°C for 15 minutes. This treatment ensures that the milk can be preserved at room temperature for a period of not less than 30 days.
In-bottle sterilised milk is a shelf-stable dairy product produced by sealing milk in glass bottles and subjecting it to high-temperature heat treatment. Typically, the milk is heated to temperatures ranging from 110°C to 121°C for 15 to 30 minutes. This process effectively destroys all vegetative microorganisms and bacterial spores, making the milk microbiologically safe and extending its shelf life up to 6–9 months without refrigeration. The heating is usually done in batch retorts or autoclaves after the milk has been bottled and sealed. Although the process ensures safety, it often leads to a slight cooked flavour and some nutritional losses, particularly in heat-sensitive vitamins such as vitamin B1 and vitamin C.

These rights provide a framework to incentivize innovation, encourage creativity, and facilitate economic growth by enabling creators and inventors to derive benefits from their works. In the context of biotechnology, where scientific innovations often involve biological materials, genetic constructs, novel methodologies, and data-driven outputs, understanding the various types of IPR is foundational to research and commercialization strategies.
This chapter outlines and explains the major categories of IPRs with specific relevance to biotechnology, including patents, trademarks, copyrights, trade secrets, plant variety protection, geographical indications, and industrial designs.
2.1 Patents – Definition, Scope, and Criteria

 2.1.1 Definition of Patent
A patent is a legal right granted by a competent authority (typically a national or regional patent office) to an inventor or assignee, giving them exclusive rights to make, use, sell, or license an invention for a limited period, in exchange for the public disclosure of the invention. It is a form of intellectual property that protects technological innovation and incentivizes research and development across sectors, especially in biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, agriculture, and medical diagnostics.
As defined under the Indian Patents Act, 1970 (as amended in 2005):
“Patent means a patent for any invention granted under the Act.”— Section 2(1)(m), The Patents Act, 1970

Section 4.1 Patent Application Process in India
4.1.1 Introduction
India’s patent system is governed by the Patents Act, 1970, as amended by the Patents (Amendment) Acts of 1999, 2002, and 2005, and is administered by the Office of the Controller General of Patents, Designs, and Trade Marks (CGPDTM). The Act aligns with the Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS) Agreement, ensuring compliance with global standards. For inventions in modern biotechnology, the patent application process in India involves a rigorous examination of novelty, inventive step, industrial applicability, and statutory exclusions, particularly under Sections 3(b), 3(c), 3(d), and 3(j).
 4.1.2 Who Can Apply?
Under Section 6 of the Patents Act, a patent application in India can be filed by:
• The true and first inventor,
• An assignee of the inventor,
• A legal representative of a deceased inventor.
In the case of collaborative research or industrial research programs, both academic institutions and corporate entities can apply jointly.

8.1 Steps in Biosafety Risk Assessment
8.1.1 Introduction
Biosafety Risk Assessment is a systematic, science-based process used to identify, evaluate, and mitigate risks associated with handling biological agents, genetically modified organisms (GMOs), and biotechnological products. It is central to ensuring human safety, environmental integrity, and regulatory compliance in both laboratory and field applications.
A well-conducted biosafety risk assessment enables institutions to establish appropriate biosafety levels, implement containment measures, and ensure sustainable and responsible use of biotechnological advancements.
8.1.2 Key Objectives of Biosafety Risk Assessment
• Prevent exposure of personnel to biohazards.
• Avoid environmental contamination and unintended gene flow.
• Determine containment requirements for biological agents.
• Guide institutional and national biosafety decision-making.
• Support regulatory frameworks and compliance obligations.

India has a substantial livestock population, with animal husbandry acting as a supplementary occupation for about 67% of the rural population. Unlike the commercially oriented farming systems found in Western countries, livestock rearing in India is intricately linked to rural life, where most farmers maintain a small number of animals.
Currently, India’s livestock population surpasses 535 million, which includes 192.49 million cattle, 109.85 million buffaloes, 74.26 million sheep, 148.88 million goats, 9.06 million pigs, and over 850 million poultry birds. Each year, approximately 100 million animals are slaughtered in nearly 4,000 slaughterhouses, resulting in a significant amount of by-products or offals. In tropical regions, a considerable portion of these by-products deteriorates before they can be utilized, primarily due to a lack of knowledge, skills, and infrastructure.
Enhancing profitability in the livestock sector could be realized through improved utilization of animal by-products and waste. Many slaughterhouses presently do not have sufficient facilities to collect and preserve these byproducts in a timely manner. Additionally, retrieving fallen animal carcasses from remote rural areas often presents challenges. The competitiveness of the meat industry can be bolstered by more effective use of by-products. It is estimated that by-products such as skin, pluck, head, feet, and gut can recover approximately 30% and 35% of the live animal value for goats and sheep, respectively. Thus, it is crucial to add value to significant by-products.

Blood serves as a significant byproduct within the meat industry, and the  efficient management of its collection and processing is crucial for improving profitability. The amount of blood obtained from slaughtered animals typically ranges from 5-7% of their live weight. Despite diligent efforts, a portion of blood is inevitably lost during the slaughtering process due to spillage and various other factors. To reduce these losses, several essential practices can be adopted:
1. Effective slaughterhouse design: Enhancing the layout and operational procedures within the slaughterhouse can significantly minimize spillage. This encompasses the implementation of well-structured drainage systems and collection vessels.
2. Training and protocols: It is essential to ensure that personnel are thoroughly trained in blood collection methods and strictly follow established protocols to mitigate accidental loss. This involves appropriate handling and prompt processing to prevent clotting and spoilage.
3. Technology: Allocating resources towards advanced blood collection and processing technologies can enhance operational efficiency. Automated systems facilitate the collection, filtration, and storage of blood while minimizing waste.
4. Regular maintenance: Maintaining equipment and facilities in optimal condition is vital to prevent leaks and other complications that may result in blood loss.
5. Storage and processing: After collection, blood must be processed promptly to prevent coagulation. Efficient cooling and storage practices are essential for preserving its quality and maximizing its potential for subsequent processing into products such as blood meal or plasma.
Collection of Blood
Blood may be collected directly into metal or plastic drums when animals are suspended for bleeding. In cases where the animals are slaughtered on the ground, small enamel or plastic bowls can be placed under the bleeding site to collect the blood, which can subsequently be transferred into a drum. The anticipated yield of blood from average tropical livestock is generally as follows:

a) Pica
Pica is a condition characterized by the persistent ingestion of non-nutritive substances such as soil, rocks, plastic, cloth, or other inappropriate materials. While commonly observed in humans, pica is also prevalent in animals, including livestock, domestic pets, and wildlife. It is often a sign of underlying health, environmental, or nutritional issues. Understanding the causes, implications, and management of pica is crucial for animal welfare and productivity.

The aetiology of pica in animals is multifaceted and can be broadly categorized into nutritional, medical, behavioural, and environmental factors.

1. Traditional Approach
This approach splits economic activities into four interconnected areas:
Consumption, Production, Exchange, and Distribution (CPED).
1. Consumption – Using Goods & Services
Consumption refers to the utilization of goods and services to satisfy human needs and wants. It involves the destruction of utility, meaning that once a good or service is consumed, it cannot be reused in its original form i.e. once used, their original form is gone (utility destroyed) Economics studies the nature of human wants, their characteristics, and how individuals make consumption decisions.

Production- Function- The technical law relating inputs to outputs has beengiven the name of production function. Production function expresses the relationship between physical input and physical output of a firm for a given state of technology.
Law of Variable Proportion or Law of Diminishing Returns (Short Run Production Function)
This law explains the relationship between inputs and outputs in the short period. According to this law, output can be changed by altering variable factors (such as labour and feed) while keeping other factors (such as land and infrastructure) constant. The law states that with an increase in variable factors, keeping other factors constant, total product initially increases at an increasing rate, then increases at a diminishing rate, and finally starts decreasing.

Introduction
Climate change has emerged as a vital worldwide concern in contemporary times. It is an incontrovertible fact that the climate has changed in the past, is currently experiencing changes, and will persist in changing irrespective of the extent of mitigation efforts invested. Defined as a substantial shift in weather patterns over a period ranging from a few decades to millions of years, climate change is a phenomenon of critical importance that commands our attention and action. Fisheries and aquaculture are becoming a global industry in terms of food production and employment- enerating sectors. Millions of people in India rely on fisheries for a living, either directly or indirectly, as subsistence fisheries, typically located at the bottom of the economic pyramid, with lower earnings, disorganised jobs, and greater socioeconomic risk (Dutta et al., 2007). The fisheries sector contributes 1.03 per cent of the Indian GDP. Climate change badly hampered the food production sector, the fisheries sector is also not untouched due to its dependency on local weather and climate parameters (Temperature, Precipitation, humidity etc.). In its third assessment report, which was released in 2001, the Inter-Governmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) came to the conclusion that new or altered insect pest incidence and decreased crop yields in most tropical and sub-tropical regions would disproportionately affect the poorest nations (IPCC, 2001). To meet the food needs of a growing population in the face of climate change, climate-smart aquaculture (CSA) is an integrated approach to improving technological, policy, and investment conditions to promote sustainable agricultural development for food security (FAO, 2015).

Introduction
Aquaculture is one of the food-producing industries with the fastest rate of growth in the world and is widely recognized for its substantial contributions to food security, revenue production, and poverty alleviation (Subhasinghe, 2003). The production of aquaculture has increased dramatically during the last 30 years, from less than 20 million tonnes in the early 1990s to 178.9 million tonnes in 2022. The aquaculture industry reported an average growth rate of 6.7% per year globally from 1990 to 2020 (FAO, 2022). In 2020-22, the global annual per capita fish consumption was 20.4 kg (FAO, 2022). In addition, 58.5 million people were engaged in this sector worldwide for their livelihood. Many new approaches and technologies have been developed to increase the production. However, aquaculture faces significant challenges, including environmental quality, quality seed availability, and disease management (Sitcha et al., 2020; Oglend, 2020). To address these issues, the aquaculture industry adopts new scientific and technological advancements. Among the recent advancements in science, nanotechnology is fast emerging as a novel tool for the next generation of aquaculture and fisheries development. Nanotechnology is rapidly becoming a new tool for the growth of aquaculture and fisheries in the next generation, among other recent scientific breakthroughs
(Shah et al., 2020).

Introduction
Aquaculture has significantly contributed to the increase in global fish production. However, the domestication of only a limited number of species for intensive aquaculture has been achieved in recent decades. A primary challenge in the domestication and sustainable culture of candidate species lies in the standardization of induced breeding techniques. Controlled reproduction in captivity remains suboptimal for many commercially important aquaculture species. In captivity, females of several species often fail to complete oocyte maturation (Corriero et al., 2021), while males exhibit inadequate milt production (Zohar et al., 1989; Peter et al., 1993). Hormonal manipulation and environmental stimulation are considered effective approaches to overcome these challenges and facilitate captive maturation for induced breeding.
Several hormone analogues, such as gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH), follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), and luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone (LHRH), have been developed into commercial formulations like Ovaprim™, Ovatide™, and Wova-FH™, which target the brain-pituitarygonad (BPG) axis. However, these hormones have shown limited efficacy in the induced breeding of some commercially important species, including catfish. Recent studies suggest that neurohypophysial nonapeptide hormones also play a crucial role in modulating the GnRH– onadotropin (GTH)–steroid hormone pathway (Joy and Chaube, 2015). In mammals, nonapeptides include oxytocin (OT) and vasopressin (VP), which are homologous to isotocin (IT) and vasotocin (VT) in teleost fish. These nonapeptides, consisting of nine amino acids, are classified as basic (VT and VP) or neutral (OT and IT), depending on the amino acid at the eighth position. For example, VP has arginine, whereas OT has leucine at this position (Stoop, 2012).
In Heteropneustes fossilis, a novel neuropeptide gene, savetocin, has been identified, distinguished from IT by the substitution of valine for isoleucine at the eighth position. Nonapeptides also have homologues in other organisms, such as annetocin in worms and insects, inotocin in mollusks, and conopressin in leeches and Lymnaea stagnalis. Among vertebrates, lungfish, amphibians,
reptiles, and birds produce mesotocin and vasotocin, whereas marsupials secrete oxytocin and phenypressin (Darlison and Richter, 1999). These findings highlight the diversity and evolutionary significance of nonapeptides,
as well as their potential as novel targets for improving induced breeding in
aquaculture species.

Introduction
Global aquaculture plays a significant role in ensuring food security both directly (by making food more accessible and available) and indirectly (by promoting economic growth). Since the 1980s, aquaculture production has increased, and it has been suggested that there is theoretically enormous potential for further growth. FAO came to the conclusion that the industry should acknowledge the pertinent environmental and social issues as it continues to grow, intensify, and diversify. Climate change, and more especially the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions that occur along food supply chains, is one of the major environmental (and social) problems. We must comprehend how aquaculture contributes to global GHG emissions and how to reduce them in order to support its sustainable growth (FAO, 2019).
What are Green House Gases?
Heat-trapping gases in the earth’s atmosphere are referred to as greenhouse gases, or GHGs. Maintaining a temperature on Earth that is conducive to life depends on greenhouse gases. The average temperature on Earth would be around -20°C if the greenhouse effect didn’t exist. Since the beginning of the Industrial Revolution, human activity has raised the atmospheric quantities
of greenhouse gases. The major GHG’s emitted into the earth’s atmosphere is given in Fig. 1.

Introduction
Toxic inorganic and organic compounds are continuously contaminating our environment, endangering both human health and the planet’s ecosystems. This is a major worldwide problem. Because they persist in the environment, these pollutants which are caused by industrial processes, agricultural practices, urbanization, and over use of natural resources are very hard to control. While inorganic contaminants, including heavy metals, are difficult to break down naturally and need more complex remediation techniques, organic molecules may frequently be broken down into less dangerous components. Among these methods, bioremediation has become a viable, environmentally beneficial option that uses the inherent powers of fungus, bacteria, and plants to purify
and repair polluted soils and streams.
Phytoremediation, a specific form of bioremediation, harnesses the power of green plants to absorb, accumulate, degrade, or stabilize these harmful substances (Wang et al., 2021). This process not only mitigates pollution but also revitalizes ecosystems by improving soil structure, increasing biodiversity, and supporting sustainable land use. Phytoremediation provides a low-cost
and less intrusive substitute for conventional cleanup techniques, which frequently entail high-energy procedures, chemical treatments, or considerable excavation, as the globe struggles with the growing danger of environmental deterioration. Rapid industrialisation, urban waste, and natural activities can introduce large quantities of highly toxic organic pollutants, including
petroleum hydrocarbons, nitro and halogenated aromatic compounds, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), dibenzofurans and dibenzop-dioxins (PCDD/Fs), solvents, explosives, and pesticides, into both aquatic and soil ecosystems (Tanwir et al., 2021). One of the major challenges to reducing water pollution is the presence of heavy metals including cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb), and chromium (Cr) in industrial and agricultural runoff. Associated with other pollutants, these metals disrupt aquatic ecosystems at the species and community levels, which has an array of negative impacts on animal and human health. The World Health Organization (WHO) has emphasized how important it is to keep an eye on these chemicals in drinking water because of their link to serious health concerns including cancer, respiratory disorders, and cardiovascular illnesses.

Introduction
Pesticides play a crucial role in agriculture. During the period of the Green Revolution, the use of pesticides increased dramatically (Matson et al., 1997). According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), pesticides can be defined as compounds that are used for the destruction, repulsion, or prevention of organisms that can be harmful to cultured crops (pests) as well as affect the regulation of plant growth. They are categorized based on several factors, such as their chemical composition (organophosphates, pyrethroids, neonicotinoids, etc.), based on the types of pests they eradicate (herbicides, insecticides, fungicides, etc.), and application methods. Although each pesticide has a distinct purpose, they all have comparable advantages. Some of the primary benefits of pesticide usage are the prevention of disease andan increase in yield, whereas secondary benefits include economic efficiency, an increase in food quality, facilitation of sustainable agriculture, improving public health, etc. However, the extensive use of pesticides has its consequences. These pesticides are meant to control or eliminate pests, but their toxicity could end up in unexpected areas. Its utilization poses significant harm to the environment, particularly to aquatic ecosystems. While they are essential in agriculture, their unregulated application leads to environmental degradation. The level of toxicity is influenced by factors such as pesticide concentration, mode of action, chemical composition, and persistence in the environment. Pesticides can cause both acute as well as chronic health effects. Through runoff or leaching, they indirectly enter water bodies, harming aquatic flora and fauna. As airflow enters the classification chamber, the destruction process rotates at high speed, and the classification rotor generates centrifugal force. The viscous effect of the airflow creates centripetal force. When the centrifugal force on the particles exceeds the centripetal force, the coarse particles return to the destruction chamber, while fine particles are carried with the airflow to the powder collector for collection.
There are three primary operating characteristics of the flour mill. First, the main shaft in the power system is sequentially equipped with bearing caps, radial ball bearings, bearing pads, and thrust ball bearings from top to bottom. Second, the grinding system consists of a spring, spring pad, inner grinding head, adjusting nut, and outer grinding head mounted on the spindle. Lastly, the separation system features a brush mounted on the spindle, with a tension spring above and an adjusting nut below the brush.

Raw grains are introduced into the mill's hopper and then conveyed to the grinding chamber containing the grinding stones or rollers. As the grains pass through the chamber, the high-speed rotation of the stones or rollers generates friction that crushes, grinds, and pulverizes the grains into a coarse powder, which gradually becomes fine flour.

It encompasses various stages, including fabrication, cleaning, filling, sealing, combining, labeling, overwrapping, and palletizing.Food packaging refers to the methods, materials, and technologies used to package food items. It serves multiple purposes, such as prolonging the shelf life of products. However, food packaging is not a recent innovation, and its history is quite fascinating.
Food packaging has existed in various forms throughout history. The Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry highlights that Napoleon played a major role in its development by offering a reward of 12,000 francs for anyone who could invent a method to preserve food for his army. This prize went unclaimed for 15 years until Nicholas Appert introduced the canning method. Appert’s process involved boiling food and sealing it in airtight glass containers, laying the foundation for modern canned food as we know it today.
EVOLUTION OF FOOD PACKAGING THROUGH AGES
The history of food packaging dates back centuries! The Chinese were pioneers in developing paper and wrapping materials, which were utilized for storing food. In ancient Egypt, advancements were made in glass-blowing and molding techniques, allowing glass to be shaped into various forms for food and water storage.

Natural Farming (NF) represents a sustainable approach to agriculture that draws upon ecological principles, minimizes reliance on external inputs, and makes extensive use of locally available resources. In contrast to conventional farming—which often depends on synthetic fertilizers and commercial animal feed—natural farming seeks to foster balance among the soil, crops, animals, and microbial life. Popularized in India by Subhash Palekar, this method promotes the use of natural preparations such as Jeevamrit, Beejamrit, and practices like mulching to enrich soil fertility and support plant vitality.
A core aspect of natural farming is the inclusion of livestock, which significantly contributes to nutrient recycling, weed suppression, and overall farm efficiency. Products like cow dung and urine form the basis of microbial formulations that boost soil activity and crop productivity. Livestock also contribute to ecological health through regulated grazing, pest management, and the breakdown of organic residues.
Animals such as cows, buffaloes, goats, sheep, backyard poultry, and fish are effectively integrated into the NF system to form a cohesive and regenerative agro-ecosystem. These animals enhance crop systems by providing organic inputs while simultaneously benefiting from pesticide-free fodder and farm-generated feed, leading to healthier livestock and improved quality of dairy, eggs, and meat.
This interdependent model reduces the need for external feed inputs, enhances natural animal wellness, and raises farm income, particularly for smallholders. Natural farming promotes the use of native breeds that thrive in local conditions with minimal intervention.
Ultimately, integrating livestock within natural farming is not just beneficial— it is vital for establishing robust, regenerative farm systems. This synergy between animals and crops supports ecological sustainability, strengthens food systems, and uplifts rural communities.

This knowledge has been gained through extensive research and experience over the years. Therefore, it is crucial for students studying nutrition to understand the methods used to acquire this knowledge and how it continues to evolve through ongoing research. Advantages of Scientific Feeding

Nutrition plays a significant role in any livestock development program, and the expression of genetic potential for production depends on the adequate supply of nutrients. For profitable livestock production, it is essential to feed livestock nutritionally balanced diets with minimum cost and wastage, as feed cost accounts for more than half of the cost of livestock produce. Providing a balanced diet to animals can reduce feed costs, minimize nutrient wastage, and improve feed efficiency, thereby positively impacting the environment by reducing nutrient excretion.
The demand for animal products such as milk, meat, and eggs is constantly increasing to meet the needs of the growing human population. Better awareness of health and rapid urbanization, with a higher preference for quality animal products, has further fueled this demand. Human food is incomplete in terms of optimum nutrition without animal products like meat, milk, and eggs. To maximize the production of animal products according to their genetic potential, animals must be fed a balanced ration scientifically formulated to provide all essential nutrients.
Balanced feeding involves feeding livestock according to their requirements to achieve growth and production in line with their genetic potential. Understanding the nutrient requirements and the relative value of feeds as a source of these nutrients is the foundation of scientific feeding. Effective measures to achieve a balanced diet include accurate feed formulation based on the nutritional value of each feed ingredient, precise quantification, proper blending of different feedstuffs, optimal use of mineral mixtures, salt, feed additives, and the application of improved feed processing techniques tailored to the relevant species of livestock.

Imbalance between feed availability, feed ingredient prices, and livestock product prices, such as milk, meat, and eggs, leads to poor animal performance, low growth rates, reduced reproductive efficiency, and high morbidity and mortality rates. This issue is particularly severe in South Asian countries like Pakistan, Nepal, India, and Bangladesh, where there is a widespread lack of sufficient high-quality feed. To address this challenge, it is essential to develop technologies for utilizing non-conventional feeds and fibrous agricultural residues more effectively.
The large number of livestock in these countries is both an asset and a liability. Many of the less productive animals are owned by impoverished individuals who have no alternative livelihood options and cannot reduce their livestock numbers. Therefore, efforts must be made to enhance production by optimizing the use of available feed resources, minimizing losses from diseases and parasites, implementing better management practices, and focusing on genetic improvement. The primary feed resources in these regions are crop residues, such as rice and wheat straws, sorghum and maize stovers, and sugar cane bagasse. These materials are typically low in protein and high in fiber, with energy content in a lignified form.
India, with 17.5% of the global population and 20% of the world’s cattle population, faces challenges due to limited land availability for agriculture. The country’s animal population grows at a rate of 0.66% annually, while the human population increases rapidly at 1.6%. With only 4% of cultivable land allocated to farm feed production, there is intense competition between human and animal populations for food and fodder resources. India currently experiences a deficit of 44% in concentrate feed ingredients, 10.5% in dry crop residues, and 35.6% in green fodder, exacerbating the shrinking farmland due to urbanization.
Traditional feed in India consists of crop residues or straw from grains like jowar, bajra, ragi, wheat, and barley, either whole or ground. These materials can be fed alone or in combination with fresh fodder. The limited availability of land for fodder crops necessitates the exploration of non-traditional or

Sexual development in animals is considered one of the most complex research areas. This complexity arises from the underlying genetic structures that determine gender. Additionally, sexual development is viewed as one of the most intricate traits that have evolved, making it essential to studying evolution and population genetics (Schartl et al., 2018). According to evolution, fish have a link between invertebrates and higher-stacked vertebrates. According to Smith & Wootton, (2016), Kang et al. (2017), nearly all known mechanisms of sex determination observed in vertebrates have been identified in fish. As a result, finding the fish sex determination genes and their role in fish biology has excellent significance for the purely biological science of sex determination in animals. The energy from food is consumed into growth before fish become sexually mature. Since there is a range of ages for sexual maturity among different fish species, this explains the bilateral sexual growth differences in the species. The common carp (Cyprinus carpio) and the half-smooth tongue sole (Cynoglossus semilaevis) are two species that show a pattern in which females mature later than males, leading to larger females.
Sex-determining genes and their action mechanisms are crucial for guiding sex control breeding strategies in animals like the Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) and yellow catfish (Pelteobagrus fulvidraco), where males are categorized as more advanced than females Shao and Chen 2012; Chen et al., 2013; Long et al.., 2015; Mei and Gui. 2020). However, over ten years ago, the most evolved animals were the primary research subjects on the genes that determine sex and the mechanisms by which they work. According to Sinclair et al., SRY, also known as Sinclair, is the first human sex-determining gene found on the Y chromosome. in mice) and subsequently turned out to be a gene that determines maleness.

Initially rooted in early twentieth-century studies focused on fundamental biology—particularly in amphibian models—this field has significantly expanded to enhance desirable traits through methods like polyploidy and uniparental inheritance (Arai, 2001; Benfey, 1999; Benfey, 2011; Cherfas, 1975; Devlin & Nagahama, 2002; Felip et al., 2001; Guo et al., 2009; Hulata, 2001; Komen & Thorgaard, 2007; Nagy, et al., 1979; Nagy, et al., 1978; Neyfakh, 1956; Ojima & Makino 1978). Over time, researchers worldwide have meticulously refined these techniques, transforming chromosome manipulation into a powerful tool for developing aquaculture strains with improved performance traits. By the late 20th century, aquaculture research began leveraging chromosomal modifications in finfish and aquatic invertebrates to achieve increased growth rates, disease resistance, and enhanced survival, with such techniques becoming extensively applied in commercial aquaculture operations (Pandian & Koteeswaran, 1998; Piferrer et al., 2009; Purdom, 1972). Over the past 30 years, a wide body of research has focused on optimizing treatment conditions specific to each target species, yielding robust evaluations of various aquaculture performance metrics. These metrics, including survival, growth, reproductive maturation, and disease resistance, have proven essential in assessing the effectiveness of polyploid and uniparental (gynogenetic and androgenetic) progeny (Purdom, 1976; Refstie et al., 1977; Romashov et al., 1960; Romashov & Belyaeva 1964; Stanley 1976; Stanley, 1976; T. J. Pandian, 2011; Devlin & Nagahama 2002; Guo, et al., 2009; Hulata, 2001; Komen & Thorgaard, 2007). As aquaculture has grown into the fastest-expanding sector of animal food production globally, the demand for sustainably produced, high-quality protein continues to rise. This surge in demand is driven, in part, by the decline of global fisheries due to overfishing, pollution, and habitat degradation. Consequently, the aquaculture industry faces the challenge of increasing output sustainably, necessitating the development of improved fish strains that support the resilience and efficiency of farmed stocks. To meet these demands, a range of genetic modification methods has been employed, aiming to produce fish with desirable traits such as rapid growth, superior meat quality, and enhanced resistance to disease (Xu et al., 2015). Chromosome manipulation has thus emerged as a critical tool, facilitating precise genetic interventions to enhance farmed species’ overall performance and adaptability.

With the rapid growth of the human population and the overfishing of natural fish stocks, it is more important than ever to increase aquaculture production sustainably. These advancements offer deeper insights into the genetic factors that govern key traits like growth, reproduction, and environmental resilience, enabling aquaculture to address global food demands while safeguarding biodiversity and maintaining genetic
integrity. The integration of these techniques in fisheries and aquaculture has led to significant advancements in the genetic improvement of cultured species, disease management, and biodiversity conservation in recent years. Moreover, these scientific advancements offer innovative methods for effective disease control and the preservation of aquatic biodiversity, all of which contribute to aquaculture’s long-term viability and growth. Over the past two decades, fish karyotype studies have been combined with genome sequencing, revealing more remarkable genome plasticity and variability in fish compared to other vertebrates. Comparative fish genome analysis evaluates divergence rates and explores sex-determination genes and gene family evolution in teleosts. ,Currently, over 80 fish species have their genomes annotated in the Ensembl database (https: //www.ensembl.org/index.html, accessed on 6 April 2021), and around 150 are assembled to the chromosome level in the NCBI database (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/genome/). However, the quality of many assembled genomes has been criticized for not meeting reference genome standards. Fish genome sequencing is expected to grow significantly by 2028 due to initiatives such as the Earth BioGenome Project. This chapter will explore the chronological development of cytogenetic techniques used in aquaculture and fisheries, emphasizing their role in improving quality, ensuring disease resistance, and promoting environmentally sustainable practices.

It includes:

One emerging area of interest in aquaculture nutrition is the use of bioactive peptides, which offer a natural and effective alternative to synthetic feed additives.
Bioactive peptides are short chains of amino acids, typically ranging from 2 to 20 residues, which are derived from protein sources. These peptides are typically inactive within the parent protein but become bioactive once they are released through specific processes, including enzymatic hydrolysis, microbial fermentation, or gastrointestinal digestion. However, many of these feed ingredients, especially plant-based sources, contain complex macromolecules that can be difficult for fish to digest. Fish possess a limited capacity for endogenous enzyme production, which can hinder their ability to effectively break down these complex nutrients. As a result, poorly digested feed not only leads to inefficient nutrient absorption but also contributes to increased waste production, further exacerbating water quality issues in aquaculture systems.

Over the past few decades, fisheries nutrition has undergone a remarkable transformation, driven by the rapid expansion of global aquaculture and the increasing need for sustainable seafood production. As wild fish stocks have become overexploited and the demand for protein-rich aquatic food sources continues to rise, aquaculture has emerged as a vital solution for meeting the growing global need for fish and seafood. By 2014, aquaculture production had surpassed wild-caught fisheries in providing fish for human consumption, marking a significant shift in how we obtain seafood. This growth, however, brings with it numerous challenges, particularly regarding the nutrition of farmed fish.
Fisheries nutrition, as a specialized field, plays a pivotal role in supporting aquaculture’s ability to provide healthy, high-quality fish for human consumption while maintaining environmental balance. As aquaculture intensifies, the demand for high-quality, cost-effective feed ingredients has surged. Traditional reliance on marine-derived ingredients like fishmeal and fish oil is becoming increasingly unsustainable, as these resources are finite and face depletion due to overfishing. This has resulted in rising costs for these inputs, placing economic pressures on aquaculture producers. Additionally, marine-derived ingredients contribute to ecological imbalances, prompting the need for alternative solutions in feed formulation.
At the same time, the environmental impacts of aquafeeds have garnered increased scrutiny. The production of feed ingredients such as soybeans, corn, and other crops can contribute to deforestation, water pollution, and greenhouse gas emissions, undermining efforts to achieve environmental sustainability in aquaculture. Nutrient waste from uneaten feed and fish excreta can also lead to eutrophication in aquatic ecosystems, damaging water quality and biodiversity. Therefore, fisheries nutrition must address not only the nutritional requirements of fish but also the broader ecological footprint of aquafeed production and usage.

This alternative pathway for glucose oxidation has enzymes in the cytosol through which glucose is degraded to carbon dioxide. It is also called a shunt because carbon atoms from glucose 6-phosphate take a long route before they proceed down the EMP or glycolytic pathway. This pathway is anabolic in nature as it produces many intermediates. In this pathway, two NADPH are generated from one glucose 6-phosphate molecule. No ATP is generated or consumed.
Overall, this pathway needs three glucose-6-phosphate molecules to complete all the reactions. CALIBRATION OF SEED DRILL
Calibration of a seed drill refers to the process of testing the seed drill to ensure it delivers the correct seed rate. Before using the seed drill in the field, calibration is essential to achieve the desired seed rate. This procedure is done to ensure that the machine delivers the predetermined seed rate accurately. The following steps are followed for the calibration of a seed drill.
Procedure for Calibration of a Seed Drill
• Determine the nominal width (W) of seed drill .

Where, M = Number of furrow openers
S = Spacing between the openers, m
• Find the length of the strip (L) having nominal width (W) necessary to cover 1/25 ha (1 /25 x 10000 m2).
L = 400/W meter
• Determine the number of revolutions (N) of the ground wheel of the seed drill
required to cover the length of the strip (L).
L = P x D x N = 400/W
N = 400/P x D x W revolutions per minute
• Jack the seed drill so that the ground wheels turn freely. Make a mark on the drive wheel and a corresponding mark at a convenient place on the body of the drill to help in counting the revolutions of the ground wheel.
• Fill the selected seed in the seed hopper. Place a container under each boot for collecting the seeds dropped from the hopper.

Over time, engines experience wear and tear due to constant use, exposure to different conditions, and aging, which can result in reduced performance, efficiency, and reliability. To mitigate these issues and prolong the engine’s operational life, an overhaul becomes essential.
A tractor engine overhaul involves dismantling the engine to diagnose and replace defective components, followed by reassembly. This process aims to enhance the engine’s performance, power, and overall efficiency, ensuring it meets the demands of agricultural work effectively.
WHAT IS AN ENGINE OVERHAUL?

Abstract
Managing weeds in agricultural productivity poses a formidable challenge. An increasingly common weed control strategy in ecologically friendly farming systems is integrated weed management, which involves bioherbicides. Ensuring global food security and environmental safety heavily relies on the sustainability of agricultural production. Worldwide, sustainable agricultural approaches, including the maintenance of a permanent layer of soil cover, the minimization of soil disruption, the implementation of regular crop rotations, the practice of integrated weed control, and the adoption of conservation agriculture, are becoming increasingly popular. Bio-herbicides are commonly derived from plants containing phytotoxic allelochemicals or specialized bacteria that can induce diseases and reduce the population of weeds within a given area. However, bio-herbicides have demonstrated significant potential in inhibiting the germination and spread of weed seeds. Bio-herbicides offer a promising, environmentally friendly, promising solution for weed control, as they are derived from natural sources such as bacteria, plants, or biochemical compounds. This study investigates the effectiveness, environmental benefits, and challenges of using bio-herbicides to achieve sustainable weed control. Bio-herbicides possess the capacity to reduce dependency on artificial pesticides, eradicate unintended harm to non-target organisms, and foster a more harmonious ecosystem by employing biological agents to target particular weeds selectively.

Introduction
The Kashmir Valley, located on the northern side of the Indian subcontinent, is renowned for its stunning aquatic habitats, integral to its biodiversity and cultural heritage. The state is endowed with natural water resources Exclusively Distributed by NIPA GENX Electronic Resources and Solution Pvt. Ltd. New Delhi encompassing a total water spread area of about 0.40 lakh hectares (Department of Fisheries, Government of Jammu and Kashmir). These resources exist in the form of fast-flowing cold-water streams, lakes, rivers, marshes, springs, and high-altitude lakes. These waters hold great potential for the development of various types of fisheries, including cold water fisheries, warm water fisheries, sport fisheries, and reservoir fisheries (Department of Fisheries, Government of Jammu and Kashmir). The data outlining the fishery resources of Jammu and Kashmir is presented in (Table 1). The state is blessed with the presence of significant rivers, namely the Indus, Jhelum, Chenab, and Ravi (Shukla and Ali, 2018). Indus originates from Lake Mansarovar at an elevation of 5100 meters in the Himalayas and flows diagonally toward the northwest (Ahmad and Rais, 1998). Jhelum, another important river, originates from a spring at Verinag, which lies northeast of Anantnag Town. The river flows through the city of Srinagar and the towns of Sumbal, Sopore, and Baramulla (Raina, 2002). The third major river in the state is the Chenab, which originates from the Himalayas. The lakes of the Kashmir Valley are surrounded by the majestic Himalayan Mountains (Romshoo et al., 2020). These lakes are invaluable natural water bodies housing a diverse gene pool. The valley boasts numerous lakes and wetlands at varying altitudes, categorized as high-altitude lakes (such as Gangabal, Vishan Sar, Kishan Sar, Sheesh Nag, Nilnag, Kauser Nag, etc.) and valley lakes (including Wullar, Dal, Manasbal, Aanchar, Ahansar, Hokersar, Haigam, etc.). The main factors contributing to the degradation of the lakes include indiscriminate cutting of surrounding vegetation, leading to increased silt and nutrient accumulation in the lake. Additionally, the disposal of sewage and domestic waste, along with the excessive use of pesticides and insecticides in the surrounding areas, and agricultural practices utilizing agrochemicals have been identified as significant contributors (Jamal et al., 2022; Kumar et al., 2022).
