Entrepreneur

The word “Entrepreneur” is derived from the French verb ?Entreprendre?. It means ?to begin something? or ?to undertake?. In the early 16th century the Frenchmen who organized and led military expeditions were referred as ?Entrepreneurs?. In the early 18th century French economist Richard Cantillon used the term entrepreneur to business. Since that time the word entrepreneur means one who takes the risk of starting a new organization or introducing a new idea, product or service to society. An entrepreneur is a person who starts an enterprise. He has right to own his business and to make a profit. Some economist says that entrepreneur is one who is willing to bear the risk of a new venture if there is a significant chance for profit. Others emphasize the entrepreneur?s role as an innovator who markets his innovation. Still other economists say that entrepreneurs develop new goods or processes that the market demands and are not currently being supplied. Different researchers have elaborated qualities of Entrepreneurs. Schumpeter said that entrepreneurs are innovators who use a process of creative destruction of the established ways of creating/doing existing products and services, to set up new products, new services. David McClelland proposed that an entrepreneur is a person with a high need for achievement. He is energetic and a moderate risk taker. Peter Drucker said that an entrepreneur searches for change, responds to it and exploits change as an opportunity. In the words of Albert Shapero, Entrepreneurs take initiative, accept risk of failure and have an internal locus of control. Entrepreneurship as explained by various scholars laid emphasis on a wide spectrum of activities such as self employment of any sort, creation of organizations and innovation.

Livestock rearing provides triple benefits of income, employment and nutritional security to the society and is important source of subsidiary income to small/marginal farmers and agricultural laborers. Finance is a prerequisite and of paramount importance for setting up of a livestock enterprise whether a dairy farming unit for milk production, sheep or goat unit, piggery unit, dairy/poultry processing unit etc. Provision of credit/loans for the purchase of livestock, feed, veterinary services and insurance against the loss of valuable productive assets play an important role in encouraging new investments in the sector and also in coping with difficult problems such as draught and diseases. Decisions about credit are often most important judgments that people in the livestock enterprise must make. These decisions often determine whether individuals operating in input, production, processing and services based livestock enterprise would succeed in making profit.

Abstract

The Himalayas of Himachal Pradesh is prone to landslides due to inherent geodynamic conditions, rainfall and anthropogeny. Besides multi-variate studies on the landslides of Himachal Pradesh, instrument based early warning system was attempted by taking Jhakri landslides as the test site. Various instruments viz; piezometer, vertical inclinometer, Rain gauge, etc. were installed and the paper discusses about the methodology adopted in the installation of the instruments and the observations made from the instruments. While Piezometer did not reveal much information, the Tiltmeter showed minor movements.

Abstract

The landslide is a disaster which causes rampant loss to life, property and ecosystems. With increased awareness and technological development, the number of monitoring stations near hazardous regions have increased. To give warning prior to the occurrence of a landslide, the soil/rock mechanics of the underlying bed needs to be studied and understood. This paper examines the current literature and elucidates some features of state-of- the-art landslide monitoring systems.

INTRODUCTION

Advancements in technology have helped us to understand nature better than before, yet the geotechnical parameters causing landslides could not be quantified accurately. The efforts taken in predicting landslides are clearly moving towards this objective and this can be seen by the number of monitoring stations that have been setup in landslide prone areas around the world. The data that is obtained at each location is important in understanding landslides. Each location is unique in terms of soil properties, groundwater, inclination of the slope and weather conditions and consequently, each deployment is unique.

The paper narrates the instrumentation based forewarning systems functioning around the world. The paper discusses these aspects hierarchically viz; Landslide prone areas in India, geotechnical instrumentations and their merits, influence of rainfall on landslides, correlation between rainfall and pore pressure, the relevance of different systems for different scenarios etc.

Abstract

The landslide vulnerability of the state of Mizoram is already high due to lithology, structure, geomorphology and seismotectonics and also the rainfall, like the other states of the northeastern region of India. The extensive mining activities along the highways for the building and road materials appear to cause additional problems of landslides. So two prominent landslides occurring in Keifang and Tlungvel quarries,Mizoram were studied. Besides taking stock of the geosystems, boreholes were drilled in both slides and from the total depth drilled and the modified core recovery, the RQD were worked out for the rocks which indicates that geotechnically the rocks of Keifang quarry are weak when compared to Tlungvel quarry. The geophysical surveys too lead to similar inferences. On the basis of the studies a set of mitigation strategies have been suggested.

Allocation of the water receipt including anticipated within the crop period and its detailed account of expenditure for efficient and profitable farm management is called as water budgeting.

Water budgeting may be for an irrigation system planned by irrigation engineers; may be for a canal or for an area (block) or may be for a farm according to the need and plan by responsible persons who plan the irrigation efficiency.

Under natural habitats microorganisms usually grow in mixed populations containing several species. This is really a problem for microbiologists because a single type of microorganism can not be studied adequately in a mixed culture. In laboratories these populations can be separated into pure cultures. The pure cultures contain only one type of organism and are thus suitable for studying the cultural, morphological and biochemical characters of an individual species. In the present days there are several ways of developing pure cultures in laboratories. Some of which are as follows:

Introduction

India, only occupies 3.29 million km² bounded geographical areas, which forms 2.4% of the world’s land acreage area; it support over 15% of the world’s population. The population of India as on 1 March 2016 stood at 1332 billion. Thus, India supports about 1/ 6th of world population, 1/50th of world’s land acreage and 1/25th of world’s water resources. The country as well has a livestock population of 500 million, which is about 20% of the world’s absolute livestock population. More than half of these are cattle, forming basic the backbone of Indian agriculture. The absolute accessible water assets of the country are adjourned as 1086 km³. Total bounded breadth of alone Eastern India occupies 28% of country’s absolute breadth of 328.73 m ha. The share of forest area to geographical area ranges from 33 to 54% for North Eastern hill states, in Assam. The per capita land availability decreased from 0.50 ha in 1981 to 0.33 ha in 2000 due to proportionate increase of land use for non-agriculture purpose and increasing population density. Rice, maize, wheat, rapeseeds, groundnut, pulses, sugarcane, potato, jute, jowar and bajra are the major crops grown in this region amongst which rice is the principle crop. India has a long history of agriculture since civilization. Then the agriculture was based on traditional practices and the local varieties were being grown without much care. Population densities usually didn’t pose much difficulty to supply food grains. Rice both under low/up land ecosystem is primarily grown under rainfed conditions having production constraints of entirely opposite in nature. Very low productivity under rainfed eco-system is mainly due to yield depressing factors caused by biotic stresses across the rice ecology, either resulted from excess or deficit water due to uneven and erratic distribution of annual rainfall. The cropping intensities in the states like Assam, Bihar, MP, Orissa, UP and West Bengal are 137.7, 137.8, 125.6, 154.6, 148.6 and 159.6 per cent, respectively. This indicated that a vast majority of lands remain fallow during dry (winter/rabi)season due to lack of proper technologies, which are under rainfed conditions, specifically lack of available moisture and or rainfall during this period. That is more than half of the arable land remains fallow during rainless period. Increasing cropping intensities in rainfed uplands is not easily achievable but there is great potential of intensification of cropping in rainfed lowland by utilizing natural resources and conserved residual moisture. Pulses like black gram, green gram, lentil, lathyrus, chick pea and oilseeds like linseed, groundnut, and rapeseed could not only increase the cropping intensities but also come forward to increase national productivity. Adoption of improved crop cultivars, cropping system, increasing cropping intensities, precision farming can hold good to get out of this situation where whole system is to be considered.

Introduction

India’s food problem dates back prior to independence. In the beginning, India’s food problem was one of scarcity, shortage of rice after the separation of Myanmar (Burma) from India in 1937 and shortage of wheat, also after the partition of the country in 1947. Initially, the major concern was to increase the domestic supplies either through increased production or through imports or through both. In the second half of the 1950s and during the 1960s the major concern was shifted to control of food grains prices. The Government of India entered into an agreement in 1956 with the USA known as PL 480 agreement for the import of rice and wheat. The Government found the PL 480 food imports a good tool to stabilize food prices in the country. Infact, PL 480 imports were the basis of our agricultural and industrial development. The frequent occurrence of flood and drought, food shortage resulted famine in several corners of the country during pre-independence period and even after independence.

Introduction

‘IP’ refers to unique, value-adding creations of the human intellect that results from human ingenuity, creativity and inventiveness. An IP right is thus a legal right, which is based on the relevant national law encompassing that particular type of intellectual property right. Such a legal right comes into existence only when the requirements of the relevant IP law are met and, if required; it is granted or registered after following the prescribed procedure under that law. All countries around the world have a national legal system of intellectual property rights which has developed over varying periods of time during the last 150 years or so. It has enabled the grant of property-like rights over such new knowledge and creative expression of mankind, which has made it possible to harness the commercial value of the outputs of human inventiveness and creativity. This is usually done by its orderly use, exchange or sharing it amongst various types of business partners in a complex network of strategic relationships that generally work harmoniously during the new product development process for creating and marketing new and improved goods and services in domestic and export markets.

IPR is a tool for Innovation and reward for it. Innovations are concerned with the commercialization of new ideas; in contrast, an ‘invention’ may not be directly associated with commercialization. As such, innovation may be seen as a process of interaction and feedback during the various stages of the new product development process. An invention is considered as the generation of a new idea or knowledge, which aims to solve a specific technical problem. Inventions could relate to products or processes and are characteristically protected by trade secrets, utility models/petty patents or patents. Utility models/petty patents or patents are granted/registered under the relevant national/regional law by the relevant national or regional patent office. As not all inventions are commercialized, so it is clear that not all inventions result in innovations.

Hydroponics is a subset of hydroculture and is a method of growing plants using mineralnutrient solutions, in water, without soil. Terrestrial plants may be grown withtheir roots in the mineralnutrient solution only or in an inert medium, suchas perlite, gravel,mineral wool, expanded claypebbles or coconut husk

The techniques on hydroponics are widely used in plant sciences to elucidate several problemson nutrition. Primarily, this has been not only used to evaluate deficiency symptoms of an essential element but also used to assess waters stress effects in crop plants. There has been a considerable controversy whether such responses paralled with field responses. Though these techniques have their limitations, it is certain that it has its relevance in identifying certain genotypes relatively tolerant to some stresses such as water, O₂ and nutrition. Without entering to such debatable issue, it can be said thatwherenecessity demands, such techniques would proveuseful in demonstration purposes and evaluation of macronutrient deficiencies in tomato and maize. Thegrowing of plants in nutrient solution is called as water culture or hydroponics. These experiments in nutrient solutions are carried out to study the mineral nutrient relation of plants. By elements required for plant growth, specific deficiency symptoms can be produced in water culture experiments. Thesuccess of these experiments of producing deficiency symptoms depends upon the use of homogenous biological material and purity of culture solution in respect of different plant nutrients. Hydroponics is a subset of soilless culture. Many types of soilless culture do not use the mineral nutrient solutions required for hydroponics.

Plants that are not traditionally grown in a climate would be possible to grow usinga controlled environment systemlike hydroponics. NASA has also looked to utilize hydroponics in the space program. Ray Wheeler, plant physiologist at Kennedy Space Center’s Space Life Science Lab, believes thathydroponics will create advances within space travel. He terms this as a bioregenerative life support system.

Nitrogen is a nutrient and occurs in many forms including ammonia, organic, nitrate and nitriteeach of which may be tested for in a variety of ways. Under normal circumstances, the nitrite form of nitrogen will not be present in large quantities due to its rapid oxidation orconversion to nitrate. The presence of large concentrationsof ammonia in a stream or lake can create a large oxygen demand. This demand is caused by the conversion of ammonia to nitrate. High concentrations of nitrate in waste water treatment plant effluent can cause algae to grow in large quantities.

Current status

For many years, the protein contentof foods has been determined on the basis of total nitrogen content, while the Kjeldahl (or similar) method has beenalmost universally applied to determine nitrogen content (AOAC, 2000).Nitrogen content is then multiplied by a factor to arrive at protein content. This approach is based on two assumptions: thatdietary carbohydratesand fats do not contain nitrogen, and thatnearly allof the nitrogen in the dietis present as amino acids in proteins. On the basis of early determinations, the average nitrogen (N) content of proteins was found to be about 16 per cent, which led to use of the calculation Nx6.25(1/0.16 = 6.25) to convertnitrogen contentinto protein content.

Mineral exploration is not only highly imaginative and creative but a very costly activity as well. The fast emerging Geomatics technology is a real boon in mineral exploration as it encompasses a whole spectrum of solutions and services which are of great help for exploration geologists. Geological maps which generally form the basic requirement for any kind of natural resources inventory operations currently witness tremendous changes and the same is mainly attributed to the integration of Geomatics technology. Usage of Geomatics has revolutionized the art of mineral exploration as geological maps can be easily integrated with other important details like geomorphology, structure and tectonic pattern, geophysical data etc. This kind of data integration facilitates for the better identification of mineralized zones. In addition, GIS with its powerful analyzing capability provides tools at several stages in the process of mapping for building up a database containing various types of data for quantifying and extracting features related to mineralization. The present paper narrates an overview of mineral exploration using Geomatics technology.

ABSTRACT

We report here the occurrence of chrysoberyl bearing gem pegmatitesof Southern India. The Pan-African Chrysoberyl mineralization is associated with intrusive event of grey pegmatites within granulite facies parametamorphic aluminous khondalites. Lithological and structural controls of chrysoberyl mineralization are discussed. The chrysoberyl occurrences in southern India, southern Madagascar and Sri Lanka provide strong evidence for India-Sri Lanka-Madagascar juxtaposition in the East Gondwana assembly with the Achankovil Shear Zone of Southern India one side extending into Ranotsara Shear Zone in Southern Madagascar and other side into southern tip of Sri Lanka.

ABSTRACT

Lineaments are the surficial expression of sub-surface phenomena which are well discerned from low-orbital data, satellite data with its synoptic view and repetitive coverage and help to bring out more information on structural features hither to unknown by conventional geological surveys. Their study paved way to many new concepts on tectonism, mineralization, structural deformity etc. of an area both in regional and local perspective. In the present study, a small area was selected after careful observation, for their importance in mineral deposits. The lineaments are mostly structurally controlled and analysed for their relationship with the base metal deposits of the area. Moreover satellite parameters like spatial resolution, scale etc., and are observed for their changes in their orientation and relationship with the deposit of the study area, Jambughoda of Panchmahal District, Gujarat Satellite data of Landsat MSS and TM are used for the analysis. The results proved that the satellite parameters are important criteria and play a vital role in lineament analysis for mineral investigation.

ABSTRACT

Assessment of groundwater potential has wide importance in the exploration, management and development of groundwater resource. The fact that geologic and topographic factors, such as, geomorphology, lithology, structure, soil and slope control the occurrence and movement of groundwater in a region has been made use of in satellite remote sensing to aid groundwater exploration. In hard rock terrains, due to lack of primary porosity, lineaments have greater importance as those can be zones of secondary porosity trapping groundwater in its pore spaces.

In the present study, an attempt has been made to delineate groundwater potential zones in the hard rock terrain in the Gayatri River basin in Kerala, India, using satellite data. The study area which lies between 10o 26’N and 10o 45’N latitudes and 76o 21’E and 76o 54’E longitudes covering an area of about 1000 square kilometers is a drought-prone area. Landsat 7 ETM image of Gayatri River basin has been interpreted visually in a digital environment using ERDAS Imagine software to create geomorphology and lineament maps. Further, with the help of ancillary data, various thematic layers like, lithology, soil, drainage density, etc. have been created and subsequently updated using information obtained from the satellite data. Slope map of the basin has been created using Shuttle Radar Topographic Mission (SRTM) data. Integration of the thematic layers has been done in Arc/Info GRID GIS environment by giving weights to various thematic layers according to their importance in terms of groundwater occurrence. Finally, groundwater potential map of the basin has been prepared by classifying groundwater potential zones as good, moderate and poor.

ABSTRACT

With the increasing use of ground water for various activities, the fast decline in groundwater takes place. In order to prevent the aquifers from fast depletion, the ground water recharge is necessary. This study attempts to identify the favourable areas for groundwater recharge and suggest suitable recharge structures toaugment the aquifer system of the study area using Remote Sensing and GIS. The various thematic maps such as Geomorphology, Geology and lineaments, Soil, Slope, Land use, Drainage, Runoff, Depth to weathered zone, Groundwater level fluctuation and Water quality are used in the analysis. The favourable areas for groundwater recharge have been categorized into highly favourable, moderately favourable, less favourable and poor. To delineate areas favourable for recharge zone various themes are interpreted. The identification of ground water recharge zones for the study area is useful for improvement of water quality, quantity and better augmentation & management of Groundwater recharge.

ABSTRACT

The estimation of the water requirement of crop is one of the basic needs for crop planning on the farm and for the planning of any irrigation project. Water requirements of crops include the losses due to Evapotranspiration (ET) plus the losses during the application of irrigation water (unavailable losses) and the quantity of water required for special operations such as transplanting and leaching of excess salts for crop growth. It is therefore necessary to estimate the ET and Crop Water Requirement (CWR) for the efficient use of water and increased crop production. In the present study, meteorological data were collected and the crop ET (ETc) and the CWR were estimated using FAO Penmann – Monteith method for the cropping pattern of the Buthangudy canal command area situated at a distance of 2Km from the popular village Sethiathope, Cuddalore district, of Tamil Nadu, India, which is located in between the Kumbhakonam – Chennai NH – 45 main road. The methodology combines the capability of GIS and CWR to produce maps showing spatial distribution of water resources over large areas.

ABSTRACT

The use of Geographic information system to locate groundwater possible zone in Valapadi taluk of Salem was carried out using remote sensing and geophysical studies. The remote sensing methods involved in the visual interpretation of the satellite images for hydrogeomorphological and hydro structures favourable for groundwater. The geophysical method involved vertical electrical soundings to predict the sub-surface variation and to locate the water domain. Three geoelectric layers were delineated from the interpretation of vertical electrical sounding data and the map of the above results predict the depth extent of groundwater zone. The spatial distribution of the above results was identified through GIS.

Granite in the present day context is popularly known as the principal raw material in construction industry and also known for its value addition product as Dimension Stone in the global market. India is in pride possession of much sought granite varieties of the world. No doubt the demand for such granite varieties is quite high both for local and export markets but in reality the failure rate of granite quarries is also high, The technical reasons attributed for such failures being lack of application of proper scientific skill both in selection and mining ofgranite deposits. The past experience in the fieldof granite exploitation has thought us a lesson for application of geological knowledge in selection of right deposits and in adopting the right techniques. The selection criteria for construction purpose and for export market though looks simple, is more complicated in the case of dimension stone granite deposits, the reasons being the requirement of thorough knowledge in petrography,structure,geotechnical characters of the deposit. Considering the importance of the scientific knowledge, the present paper focuses on the various parameters for valuation of granite deposits. In other words, it emphasizes on arriving at a logical conclusion by applying the scientific knowledge in successful exploitation of the much valued granite deposits.

Abstract

An unprecedented tsunami hit the Andaman and Nicobar Islands and the coasts of Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Pondicherry and Kerala on the 26^th of December 2004. The loss of life and property, though wide spread in all these areas, was very severe in thickly populated low lying coasts, such as Nagapattinam in Tamil Nadu. Survey of India, in association with the Department of Science and Technology, Govt. of India, New Delhi has taken-up the task of carrying out post-tsunami Mapping of the entire east coast of Tamil Nadu using Digital aerial stereo images acquired immediately after the tsunami. The project aims to generate ortho-rectified photographs on 1: 8000 scale, which are to be used for preparing damage assessment maps of the affected coastal areas. This paper discusses various issues related to Control Surveying, Digital Photogrammetry and Large Scale feature extraction that are involved in the mapping process in general and its credibility for tsunami damage assessment in particular.

Abstract

A large tsunami triggered due to a massive earthquake of 9.3M in the offshore of Sumatra on 26^th December 2004 created havoc in several countries of the Indian Ocean. The deadly tsunami waves lashed the towns adjoining the coastline of several countries including Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia, India and Sri Lanka causing more than 1,50,000 deaths. The earthquake occurred along the plate boundary is marked by a subduction zone between the Indian plate and the Burmese micro plate. In Andhra Pradesh, six coastal Districts were affected and amongst them four south coastal districts experienced maximum damage. In the present study, Tuppalapalem (vagarru revenue village) of Vakadu mandal, Nellore District was selected as a case study for discussion in the article. The objective of the study was to make an inventory of the damages to the natural and physical resources, by preparing pre and post-tsunami maps on geomorphology, land use / land cover, tsunami inundation and finally the tsunami risk zonation map on 1:8,000 scale. In this process, water and soil samples of the affected regions were also collected and chemical analysis was carried out. The data on damages were collected using a specially formulated data sheet. High resolution IKONOS data of January 2000 and IRS data of January 2005 were used for the generation of respectively the pre and post-tsunami geomorphology and land use / land cover maps. Ground truth data were also incorporated in these thematic maps.

The study has revealed that the water in all the bore wells became brackish after tsunami. About 80 country boats, 40 fibre boats and nets were lost with an estimated loss of about one crore. The tidal waters damaged the bunds of the aqua-farms and deposited the transported sediments in them. The extensive casuarina plantations, were reduced by the onslaught of tsunami and the casuarina trees became brown due to their contact with tidal waters. From amongst the various geomorphic units mapped in the study area, the beach, spits, shoals, creeks, swales, palaeo creeks were inundated by tsunami where as beach ridges, dune complexes and stabilized sand dunes were not affected and hence inferred as barriers. Geomorphology, land use / land cover and the tsunami inundation maps, tsunami risk zonation map were prepared showing very high, high and moderate zones of tsunami risks. It is recommended to take up casuarina plantations extensively along the coast as a biowall, which will also provide employment to the local people. The shallow aquifers of the coastal environment were contaminated by the tidal waves. Hence, drinking water should be supplied through protected water supply schemes. As a part of the community development, proper awareness must be created through training and appraisal to the fisherman community to face such natural disasters. The coastal regulation zone act, which prohibits any construction activity within 500m of the high tide line, should be strictly enforced. Keeping in view of the experience, a holistic tsunami protection plan is needed to safe guard the Indian coasts.

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) in its fifth assessment report (AR5) stated that warming of the climate system is unequivocal and is more pronounced since the 1950s. The atmosphere and oceans warmed, the amounts of snow and ice have diminished, and rise in sea level is noticed. Each of the last three decades has been successively warmer at the earth’s surface than any preceding decade since 1850 and the globally averaged combined land and ocean surface temperature data show a warming of 0.85°C over the period 1880 to 2012. The recent years viz., 2015, 2016 and 2017 were the hottest years on record. The warming trend in India since 1961 has indicated an increase of 0.9°C, which is likely to impact many crops, negatively impacting food production. There are already evidences of negative impacts on yields of wheat and paddy in northern India due to increased temperature, water stress, and reduction in number of rainy days. Coastal agriculture has the onus of providing livelihood to nearly 20 % of Indian population. The water logging and coastal salinity are the major factors affecting the agricultural output from the regions. During the past decade, frequency of the extreme events such as droughts, cyclone and hailstorms increased, with 2002, 2004, 2009, 2012, and 2014 being severe droughts. Frequent cyclones and severe hailstorms in various central and southern Indian states and drought prone areas have become common. Eastern part of the country is affected by sea water intrusion. Reduced food grain productivity, loss to vegetable and fruit crops, fodder scarcity, shortage of drinking water to animals during summer, forced migration of animals, severe loss to poultry and fishery sectors were registered due to the climatic stresses, threatening the livelihoods of rural poor particularly in the coastal regions of the country.

Climate change projections for Indian subcontinent up to 2100 indicate an increase in temperature by 2-4⁰C, with different regions expected to experience differential changes in the amount of rainfall. India will experience an increase in mean and extreme precipitation during monsoon. This will increase both floods and drought. Freshwater resources will be affected due to combination of climate change and unsustainable practices. It is projected that Indian agriculture will lose over US $7 billion by 2030. There will be large reductions in wheat yield in the Indo-Gangetic plain; and substantial increase in heat stress for rice, affecting yield in the country. Coastal flooding will affect people and agriculture and also affect tourism in India. Some of the fish and other marine animals will face extinction by 2050, affecting fishing community. Glaciers in Himalaya continue to shrink affecting run-off and water resources downstream. Impacts of global climate change will be felt among the populations, predominantly on subsistence and smallholder farmers. Since agriculture currently contributes about 17 % of India’s gross domestic product (GDP), a negative impact on production implies cost of climate change to roughly range from 0.7% to 1.35% of GDP per year especially with rural India. The Indian agriculture production system faces the daunting task of feeding 17.5% of the global population with only 2.4% of land and 4% of water resources at its disposal. India is more vulnerable to climate change in view of the different vulnerabilities such as heat stress, cold waves and seasonal flooding in northern India; seasonal flooding, sea water intrusion, soil salinity and severe drought in eastern India; drought, salinity, severe cyclones and scarcity monsoon in Southern India.

Tamil Nadu has unique physiography with western and eastern Ghats on the west and northwest, Bay of Bengal in the east and Indian Ocean to the south. Tamil Nadu has high dependence on natural resources and hence faces the threat of climate change and its impacts. Available evidence shows that there is high probability of increase in the frequency and intensity of climate related natural hazards (Stephen, 2012). Out of 13 million hectares of geographical area, about 7 million hectares of land is under cultivation. Of this 55 per cent is irrigated and rest is under rain fed / dry lands. In Tamil Nadu, ground water has been harnessed fully and dry land productivity is found oscillating with ruling variability in seasonal monsoon rain and hence agricultural productivity is always under stake. To improve agricultural productivity, Tamil Nadu has been divided into seven agro climatic zones viz., North Eastern zone, North Western zone, Western Zone, Cauvery Delta zone, the Southern zone, High rainfall zone and High Altitude and Hilly zone. Tamil Nadu is vulnerable to increase in temperature and sea level rise with change in climate as a result of accumulation of green gas gases beyond the threshold level in the atmosphere at the global level (TNSAPCC, 2014). United Nations Organization (UNO) defines vulnerability as the extent to which a natural or social system is susceptible to sustaining damage from climate change process and vulnerability is a function of the sensitivity of the system to change in climate, adaptive capacity of the said system (natural or social) and the degree of exposure of the system to climate hazards (UNFCCC, 2008). Climate change is one of the biggest challenge to food security, but it is also an opportunity for the scientists and farmers to innovate and adapt. More than 70 per cent of the population in Tamil Nadu are engaged in agriculture and are facing the threat of climate change. The food grain productivity need to be increased by 130 per cent by 2050 to meet the demand of growing population. The Government of Tamil Nadu is moving towards the goal of doubling the food production and tripling the income of the farming community in a sustainable way through effective management of natural resources including soil and water. This could be achieved by practicing climate smart agriculture that aims to help find new ways to adapt to changing climate. This process would increase agricultural productivity and farm income sustainably and equitably and simultaneously helping food system pillars and farmer’s livelihoods and at the same time minimizing agriculture’s green house gas emissions. Each and every farm can become climate smart unit for promoting sustainable weather based farming practices, using inputs more efficiently and effectively to grow more and building market where farmers can access what they need and sell any surplus of what they produce.

Aims and Objectives

It has become evident that in order to achieve the food production targets of the future, a major effort will be required to enhance the seed replacement rates of various crops. This would require a major increase in the production of quality seeds, in which the private sector is expected to play a major role. At the same time, private and Public Sector Seed Organisations at both Central and State levels, will be expected to adopt economic pricing policies which would seek to realise the true cost of production. The creation of a facilitative climate for growth of a competitive and localised seed industry, encouragement of import of useful germplasm, and boosting of exports are core elements of the agricultural strategy of the new millennium.

Biotechnology will be a key factor in agricultural development in the coming decades. Genetic engineering/modification techniques hold enormous promise in developing crop varieties with a higher level of tolerance to biotic and abiotic stresses. A conducive atmosphere for application of frontier sciences in varietal development and for enhanced investments in research and development is a pressing requirement. At the same time, concerns relating to possible harm to human and animal health and bio-safety, as well as interests of farmers, must be addressed.

Globalization and economic liberalization have opened up new opportunities as well as challenges. The main objectives of the National Seeds Policy, therefore, are the provision of an appropriate climate for the seed industry to utilize available and prospective opportunities, safeguarding of the interests of Indian farmers and the conservation of agro-biodiversity. While unnecessary regulation needs to be dismantled, it must be ensured that gullible farmers are not exploited by unscrupulous elements. A regulatory system of a new genre is, therefore, needed, which will encompass quality assurance mechanisms coupled with facilitation of a vibrant and responsible seed industry.

Landscaping combines elements of art and science to create a functional, aesthetically pleasing extension of indoor living to the outdoors. One initial purpose of landscape design is to blend mans’ technology (house or building) into the natural surroundings. To work towards a desirable landscape design, the landscape horticulturist must have a working knowledge of art elements and design principles.

The “art” is always changing as the plants grow, environmental conditions change and people use the space. For this reason, landscape designers use a design process that systematically considers all aspects of the land, the environment, the growing plants, and needs of user to ensure a visually pleasing, functional, and ecologically healthy design. The design process begins by determining the needs and desires of the user and the conditions of the site. With this information, the designer then organizes the plants and hardscape materials, which are collectively referred to as the features. The features can be physically described by the visual qualities of line, form, color, texture and visual weight—the elements of design. The principles are the fundamental concepts of composition—proportion, order, repetition and unity—that serve as guidelines to arrange or organize the features to create an aesthetically pleasing or beautiful landscape. Knowledge of the elements and principles of design are essential to designing a landscape and working through the design process.

Seasonals or annual flowers refers to the group of herbaceous plants which complete their life-cycle i.e. both vegetative and reproductive phase within one year or one season. They are most popular among garden lovers and amateurs as they are easy to culture and moreover they also provide a beautiful and instant display of colours in the garden. Seasonals are mostly preferred for growing in pots, beds, borders, window boxes, hanging baskets or as cut flower for interior decoration. They enhance the aesthetic value of a place within a short span of time and create the instant landscape. Seasonals are generally grown in beds either individually with or without perennial plants in borders. They are also grown for cut flowers for interior decoration or for loose flower purpose. Some of the seasonals are valued for their naturally dried flowers like straw flower, paper flower etc. Some of annuals the annuals also provide sweet fragrance to the garden.

A greenhouse with all measures of climate control is one important component for integrated greenhouse crop production and protection. However, the growing period is very often limited to few months in the year, because of insufficient ventilation and cooling in summer as well as heating in winter. Structures and shapes of greenhouses are adapted insufficiently to climate conditions. Climate control and greenhouse structures have to be adapted and optimized with regard to outside climate, and growers must be trained in these adapted technologies. A greenhouse structure with light transmittance (through framework and cladding material), ventilation, heating, cooling, and protection from insect pests by screening, as well as all influences of management, irrigation, fertilization, water quality, physical and biological plant protection is an integrated system. Greenhouse structures should be designed according to the climate conditions and to the general design criteria, as well as to the locally available and cost-effective materials. The import of greenhouses from countries with a different climate fails very often, because they are not adapted to the local conditions. Even an appropriate greenhouse structure can fail if mounting and continuous maintenance are not guaranteed. Temperatures and global radiation allow open-air crop production throughout the year in many subtropical and tropical countries.

Vegetable and flower production are significantly influenced by the seasonality and weather conditions. The extent of their production causes considerable fluctuations in the prices and quality of vegetables. Striking a balance between all-season availability of vegetables and flowers with minimum environmental impact, and still to remain competitive, is a major challenge for the implementation of modern technology of crop production.

Rodents are well recognized pests and are considered the number one enemy of man. These animals, though considered primitive, have been so successful and abundant worldwide that they alone account for more than half of the known mammalian fauna. They can subsist on a variety of food and even without water for a long time. Due to their prowess of adaptability, they have successfully adapted to varied ecological and physiological niches, and therefore are inhabitants of practically each and every latitude and altitude. They multiply at super fast speed because they become sexually mature when they are just 6-8 months old. They then pose a challenge to man in all respects. According to Prakash (1988) in India there are 135 species and about 300 sub-species of rodents belonging to 46 genera. At least 15 of these rodent species are known to be the serious pest of public health hazard (Jain and Tripathi, 1988). Rodents not only damage the crops in the fields, where the infestation occurs at all stages of food production, processing, storage and distribution, they are also responsible for a number of diseases in the human beings.

Rodents attack the-crops shortly after sowing, during the vegetative growth and during the ripening of the seed heads. They damage the various crops of the kharif season viz., jowar, maize, ground nut and cotton as well as the crops of the rabi season viz., wheat and barley etc. They damage other crops also which include paddy, sugarcane, soyabean and Bengal gram etc. Hence some well planned rodent management is the need of the time and before going for the planning of any control method in a given situation it is essential to have an estimation of the population and the species involved.

Introduction

The present trend in the search for new drugs is to look at natural sources, which are safer for humans and ecofriendly. Of late there has been increased awareness about the detrimental effects of synthetic food supplements, food additives and drugs, and the search for natural alternatives in plants has intensified. In this regard, horticultural crops are particularly appealing since they are not only edible, but also have diverse nutraceutical effects. Nutraceuticals (often referred to as phytochemicals or functional foods) are natural, bioactive chemical compounds that have health promoting, disease preventing or medicinal properties (http://foodsci.rutgers.edu),such as antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, hypoglycemic, hypolipidemic, antimicrobial effects, to name just a few. Most of these properties are attributed to the secondary metabolites present in plants, various phytochemicals including flavonoids, terpenoid, lignans, sulfides, polyphenolics, carotenoids, coumarins, saponins, plant sterols, curcumins, phthalides etc. The medicinal value of our horticultural crops is not a new knowledge, it has been exploited by the traditional systems of medicines like Ayurveda, folklore medicines and ‘kitchen remedies’ since time immemorial.

A functional food is similar in appearance to, or may be, a conventional food that is consumed as part of a usual diet, and is demonstrated to have physiological benefits and/or reduce the risk of chronic disease beyond basic nutritional functions, i.e. they contain bioactive compound.

A nutraceutical is a product isolated or purified from foods that is generally sold in medicinal forms not usually associated with foods. A nutraceutical is demonstrated to have a physiological benefit or provide protection against chronic disease.

Introduction

Plants contain a variety of substances of nutraceuticals importance which are useful medicines, food additives, cosmetics and health supplements etc. However, low availability under in vivo condition, decreased plant resources, increases in labour cost and other problems in obtaining these high-value added substances from natural plants have pointed toward the use of in vitro techniques for production of the products. Because in vitro cultures are not affected as the production affected under in vivo conditios.This has led scientists and biotechnologists to consider plant cell, tissue and organ cultures as an alternative way to produce the corresponding secondary metabolites.Therefore, studies on the production of useful metabolite by in vitro techniques have been carried out on an increasing scale since the end of the 1950’s. The large scale cultivation of tobacco and various vegetable cells was examined in the late 1950’s and early 1960’s in the U.S., Canada, and Europe. At present, several firms are manufacturing a plant pigment, shikonin, and ginseng cell biomass on a commercial scale and several other products including anti-oxidant products.

Research efforts on in vitro derived extracts is well documented on each of these major product categories: flavors (onion and garlic, peppermint and spearmint, fruit flavors, chocolate aroma, seaweed flavors, vanilla, celery, coffee, spice, sweeteners, and so on); edible colors for foods and medicines (mainly betalains and anthocyanins): non-food pigments for cosmetics and textiles (shikonin, berberine, and various other products); several examples of fragrances and essential oils; and bioactive natural insecticides and phytoalexins useful in current integrated pest management programs. Of course, intensive activity has centered on production of natural drugs of chemoprotective compounds from plant cell culture. Some of the most prominent pharmaceutical products in this latter category include ajmalicine (a drug for circulatory problems) from Catharanthus roseus and taxol (a phytochemical effective in treatment of ovarian cancer) from Taxus species.

Prebiotic foods have been consumed for centuries, either as natural components of food, or as fermented food. However, interest in dietary use of prebiotics blossomed in the later 1800s and early 1900. Preliminary researches revealed that lactose had a profound effect on the pH of the caecal contents and intestine due to lactic acid fermentation resulting in enhanced calcium and phosphorous absorption. Further, it was also noted by several workers that inclusion of lactose in poultry diets resulted in better growth and reduced mortality.

A prebiotic can be defined as “a non digestible food ingredient that beneficially affects the host by selectivity stimulating the growth and/or activity of one or limited number of bacteria in the colon, and thus improves host health” (Gibson and Roberfroid, 1995). Based on this definition, Russell (1998) formulated the criteria according to which a substance can be a prebiotic. First, prebiotics are always feed ingredients that are not digested by the host, not or little used and/or metabolised as they pass through the upper portion of the intestinal tract, so they can reach the f lora of the large intestine. Secondly, they have to be able to serve as a substrate for one or more bacterial species with a potentially beneficial effect on the host. Finally they have to be able to cause a shift in the microf lora that improves the health of the host. In principle only non-digestible, fermentable feed components are prebiotics.

Several diagnostic techniques are employed to asses the nutrient status of the crop. These are helpful in determining specific or multinutrient stresses and quantity of nutrients needed to eliminate the stress. Some of the techniques commonly used are:

Introduction

Since beginning of this century genetic diversity of agricultural crop has been lost due to several reasons (Marla, 2012). Genetic erosion is caused by human intervention, mono culture, green revolution especially due to commercialization of plant breeding. So there is urgent need to collect, conserve plant genetic & genomic resource for further use.

A seed bank stores seeds to preserve genetic diversity. There are many reasons to store seeds. One reason is to have on-hand the genes that plant breeders need to increase yield, disease resistance, drought tolerance, nutritional quality, etc. of plants used in agriculture (i.e., crops or domesticated species). Another reason is to forestall loss of genetic diversity in rare or imperiled plant species in an effort to conserve biodiversity ex situ and in situ. Many plants that were used centuries ago by humans are used less frequently now and seed banks offer a way to preserve that historical and cultural value. Collections of seeds stored at constant low temperature and moisture guard against loss of genetic resources that are otherwise maintained in situ or in field collections. These alternative ‘living’ collections can be damaged by natural disasters, outbreaks of disease or war. Seed banks are considered seed libraries and contain valuable information about evolved strategies to combat plant stress or produce novel products. The work of seed banks spans decades and even centuries. Most seed banks are publicly funded and seeds are usually available for research that benefits the public.

Food Safety and Standard Authority of India (FSSAI) has adopted the standards of Fruit Product Order (FPO).

Chutney

It is a product prepared by cooking the fruit pulp with added salt, sugar, spices, acetic acid and fruit to a suitable consistency so that it contains TSS not less than 50% and fruit part not less than 40% as per FSSAI specification. Sugar, salt, spices, acetic acid all act as partial preservatives. Preservatives may also be added in chutney for increasing its storability. Generally no artificial colour and flavor are required to be added.

Sauce

Sauce is a product similar to ketchup, prepared from pulps of tomato or other fruit/vegetable, having TSS not less than 15% and cooked to a suitable consistency with added sugar, salt, spices and vinegar. Sugar, salt, spices, acetic acid all act as partial preservatives. According to FSSAI specification fruit sauce should have minimum of 15% TSS and 1.2% acidity. Preservatives and colours may also be added for increasing of appearance and storability.

ABSTRACT

Agrotechnology of banana has been introduced for the first time by CSIR- Indian Institute of Integrative Medicine Jammu for commercial cultivation of banana in Himalayan Shivalik range. The aim of the present investigation is to study the potential of Tissue Culture (TC) banana production in a diverse environment of Shivalik range, to make the state self-sufficient in banana production, employment generation and generate revenue for the farmers and to studies on the post harvest handling and marketing of TC banana. Initially, the sapling of this high quality tissue culture variety {BHIM Grand naine (G-9)} Banana was brought from Agro-division of Cadilla Pharmaceuticals Limited Ahmedabad, Gujarat. The field experimental trial was conducted during 20016- 2017 at CSIR-IIIM Research Station, Chatha Farm, Jammu in which four treatment combination arranged in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD). Significant differences were observed among the treatments for all the parameters studied. Among the date of planting, banana planted at 10th August reported significantly highest pseudostem height, pseudostem girth, more average number of leaves/plant, first flower emergence (days), first finger ripening (days), more number of finger per hand, more number of hand/ branch, higher weight of finger/hand (kg), higher weight of single finger (g), more finger diameter (cm), higher length of finger (cm), more weight of finger/ bunch (kg), more percentage of plant harvested at a time, higher yield (64.22 tonnes/ha), gross return (Rs. 12,84,400/ha), net return (Rs. 9,58,730.5/ha) and B:C ratio (3.94) as compared to other treatments. On an average the yield of per plant was 20-30 kg and 50- 64 tonnes per hectare. In terms of economy as per market analysis, price of banana in Jammu is approximately Rs. 20 per kg. Thus, on an average it gave Rs. 250-300 per banana plant. On the basis of market demand, approximately Rs 6.17- 9.50 lakh net return can be obtained by cultivation of one hectare of land which is alternative business for the farmers of the Jammu and Kashmir. This may leads to revolution of banana cultivation in Shivalik range of Himalaya.

ABSTRACT

Cultivation of mat grass (Cyperus pangorei Rottb.) is valuable and expensive products can plays an important role in rural areas such as Sabong and Pingla in Paschim Medinipur of West Bengal in India. Mat grass plays an act to fill the empty employment field to the resource of poor farming community to support and secured their livelihoods and maintain the economical balance of their area. This grass usually cultivated by the poor and marginal farmers. The mat sticks are used to make various household utility items, such as floor and bed mats and other attractive goods like bags, purse, TV covers. Now a days the products prepared from this grass is exported to different countries. Mat sticks are attractive durable and is eco-friendly substances which easily gets decomposed by organisms, does not create any environmental hazards and gets more profit as compared to growing rice per annum. Even an old man or woman in rural areas can earn a net income of about Rs.120 to Rs150 per day. Major focus of the study is to establish the scientific principles behind processing, separation of clum strand, texture and strength properties of the mat fibers and increase mat production which leads to improve the economic condition of rural people.

ABSTRACT

The use of engineered nano-materials has been increased as a result of their positive impact on many sectors of the economy including agriculture. Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) are now used to enhance seed germination, plant growth and as anti-microbial agents to control plant diseases. This study investigated the synthesis of silver nanoparticles using the aqueous solution of three medicinally important plants (such as Spondius mombin L., Stachytarpheta jamaicensis (L.) Vahl and Syzygium samarangense (Blume) Merr & Perry leaf extract in room temperature (350C). AgNPs present in the leaf confirmed by colour change, UV-VIS spectrum analysis, average size of AgNPs confirmed by PAS. FTIR measurement were carried out to identify the other possible biomolecule groups such as alkenes, esters, phenols, alcohols and aromatic. Leaf extract AgNPs were shown significantly higher antimicrobial activities against four species of bacteria. This findings suggest that the seed germination percentage, relative seed germination rate, relative shoot and root growth and germination index of the tested plant depends upon concentrate gradient of AgNPs.

ABSTRACT

Grewia asiatica L. locally called ’Phalsa’ (Family Tiliaceae) is a multipurpose gregarious plants species native to Asian belts, grows profusely in tropical and subtropical forests. Plant yield berries rich in calories, proteins, carbohydrates, dietary fibers, vitamins, macro-and micro-nutrients such as calcium, phosphorus and sodium. Their parts can be used as herbal medicine for treatment of various diseases. Recently, CSIR-Indian Institute of Integrative Medicine Jammu (IIIM) has developed and released a variety of this plant for rural upliftment and for development of value-added products such health drink and nutraceuticals. From its matured fruits of cultivated variety, a value added product called Shivalik Health Drink was developed by IIIM. For extension, agrotechnology of this plant has been transferred to various geographic regions of India such as Punjab, Rajasthan, Jammu & Kashmir, Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh. This species prefers hardy and can be able to withstand in drought environment. For development of drugs and value added products, several therapeutic research works have been carried out which suggested that this plant species possess antioxidant, antidiabetic, antimicrobial, hepatoprotective, antifertility, antifungal, analgesic and antiviral activities. Further, there is a need to focus on biotechnological intervention with aim to develop seedless varieties and new nutraceutical products.

ABSTRACT

Dermatology is the branch of medicine concerned with the diagnosis and treatment of skin disorders. Owing to the lack of proper hygiene and sanitation, incidence of skin diseases is a major health burden particularly in developing and under-developed countries. The study aimed at documenting the plants traditionally used to cure different types of dermatological disorders by the tribals and natives of district Udhampur. Ethnomedicinal data was collected by interviewing 91 infomants between the age group 26-89 years. Quantitative approaches were used to determine Use value (UV). The study revealed that a total of 64 plant species belonging to 59 genera and 43 families were used by the tribals and natives of district Udhampur for the treatment of 25 ailments of skin disorders. The most prevalent families were Asteraceae, Convolvulaceae, Rosaceae, Solanaceae and Euphorbiaceae. Majority of the taxa were growing in wild. Among the different plant parts used, leaf was the most frequently used. About 90% of medicinal preparations were applied topically. The most important medicinal species as per the use-value (UV) included Phyllanthus emblica, Aloe vera, Ficus carica, and Cannabis sativa. The present investigation may serve as a baseline data to initiate further research for the discovery of new bioactive compounds, thereby, providing important leads in the development of novel drugs for the treatment of such disorders.

ABSTRACT

Boswellia serrata Roxb. ex Colebr. known as ’Indian Frankincense’ is a multiferous medicinal plants known for boswellic acid and it has application in traditional ayurvedic formulation. The plant possess anti-rheumatic, anti-pyretic, anti-cancerous, anti-inflammatory, anti-hyperlipidemic, anti-coronary, analgesic and hepatoprotective properties due to the presence of several loaded bioactive compounds such as α-amyrins, β-boswellic acid, acetyl-β-boswellic acid, 11-ketoβ-boswellic acid, acetyl-11-keto-β-boswellic acid, tetracyclic triterpenoic acids and several others in minor quantities in different parts of plants. Mostly oleo-gum resin is usually used in Indian system of medicine, and acetyl-11-keto-β-boswellic acid (AKBA) is the most potent 5-lipoxygenase enzyme inhibitor responsible for inflammation, anti-cancer (G1 phase arrest) and other group of enzymes liable for allied activities. Besides, it yields essential oils and its major constituents are monoterpenoids such as pinene (2.05-64.7%), cisverbenol (1.97%), trans-pinocarveol (1.80%), borneol (1.78%), myrcene (1.71%), verbenone (1.71%), limonene (1.42%), thuja-2,4(10)-diene (1.18%) and p-cymene (1.0%). The copaene is the only sesquiterpene reported in minor quantities from essential oils of this species. Its essential show different actvities in relation to anti-cancer and antiinflammatory. From future perspectives, there is a need to carry out more research on its constituents for the development of value added products and drugs. Investigation on ecology and application of biotechnological intervention would helps in varities improvememnt, cultivation and conservation of this species.

ABSTRACT

The popular use of local plant wealth among the rural people in Hamirpur district of Himachal Pradesh reflects their greater interest in the traditional medicine and other traditional and commercial purposes. Hamirpur, one of the pioneer Himalayan district is a rich repository of medicinal flora. It is the smallest district of Himachal Pradesh due to its area, surrounded by thick forest area which is rich in diverse vegetation. Medicinal plants are used in the Ayurvedic, Unani and other traditional systems of medicine and in plant-based pharmaceutical industries. The patterns of the use of the local medicinal herbs for the treatment of various diseases and ailments have been an old practice. But the people of the district still depends upon the uses of local plants for their primary health problems treatment. This paper provides the information on the traditional uses of some of the plants such as Asparagus racemosus, Acacia catechu, Albizzia lebbek, Berberis lyceum, Bryonia laciniosa, Azadirachta indica, Adhatoda vasica, Andographis peniculata, Aegle marmelos, Celastrus peniculata, Cymbopogon flexsosus, Cuscuta reflexa and Holarrheana antidysentric of Hamirpur district for the treatment of various disorders such as anthelmintic, anti-fungal, diabetic, antibacterial, cancer, diarrhea, bronchitis, tuberculosis etc. Hence the objective of the study was to document ethnobotanical knowledge primarily of notable herbs employed by the different backward people, whether tribal or rural, in the area under study. Therefore the documentation and recording of traditional knowledge associated is necessary step for the preservation of traditional knowledge about the use of local plant wealth and conservation of plant species of study area. The data would be useful for further scientific exploration.

Plant cells contain far more compounds than are produced by the basic metabolism. Terpenes, waxes, alkaloids and pigments are just some key words that illustrate what is meant. The term basic metabolism comprises all pathways necessary for the survival of the cells, while secondary plant products are such that occur usually only in special, differentiated cells and are not necessary for the cells themselves but may be useful for the plant as a whole. Examples are flower pigments and scents or stabilizing elements. Both metabolisms are overlapping since it is often not understood why a certain compound is produced. Furthermore, no typical cell exists so that some compounds may be necessary for the survival of some cells but not for that of others.

Arguments in support of important functions for plant secondary products are underlined by the organizational complexity and specificity which characterizes many aspects of their biosynthesis. Furthermore – with the very important exception of substances produced in response to stress or pathogen attack – much of secondary metabolism is reproducible from one individual of a species to another and, to a remarkable degree, produces the same principal compounds in broadly the same relative proportions. For example, an Atropa plant extracted for alkaloids can confidently be predicted to contain predominantly atropine, rather than its immediate precursor, tropine, or a more distantly-related alkaloid, nicotine – just as the passenger boarding a train for Mumbai at Anand can be reassured that his train will not terminate prematurely at a “precursor station” (Surat), or even adopt an “alternative pathway” (to Poona). On the other hand, the evolutionary circumstances leading to the development of atropine formation in Atropa, rather than to the formation of other alkaloids with comparable activity (for example, nicotine) remain substantially unknown. A similar question has been discussed regarding two families of plant pigments with apparently similar functions, the anthocyanins and the betalains. With regard to defense (and similarly but perhaps less obviously protection against ionizing radiation), a general hypothesis argues that plants evolved a broad defensive strategy based upon a diversity of antimicrobial and anti feedant substances from which, as a result of chance mutation, more potent substances conferring additional selective advantage from time to time arose. It is conceivable that in some cases enzymes evolved or became adapted to catalyse reactions of benefit which could already occur to some extent (though in a non-stereospecific manner) non-enzymically. Mutation will then have led to the development of modified enzymes able to catalyse reactions with new or different substrates, or to catalyse alternative reactions with existing substrates.

10.1 Introduction

The following plants have been worked out in the laboratory of Prof. N. Raaman: Cynodon dactylon, Artemisia pallens, Leptadenia reticulata, Clausena dentata, Tylophora indica, Aristolochia bracteolata, A. indica, Cissus quadrangularis, Hypericum mysorense. and Solanum trilobatum. Out of some of the data of these plants have been included in the previous chapters. In this chapter, compound isolation (CD1) from Clausena dentata (worked by Dr. R. Kamaraj) and characterization of the compound are given in detail.

10.2 Preparation of extracts from Clausena dentata

The dry powder of stem bark (2.5 kg) was first soaked, at room temperature, in hexane (1:4 w/v) for 24 h. The extract was suction filtered using Whatmann filter paper. This is repeated for two more days and similar extracts were pooled together and concentrated at 40°C under reduced pressure using Buchi R - 153 Rotavapor. The residual plant material was extracted successively with chloroform and methanol in the same manner as followed for hexane. All the concentrates were subjected to column chromatography to isolate the active principles.

In spite of big potential of the largest livestock population in the world, meat industry in India is still in nascent stage. It is a business of those who are not trained and very much literate. The industry is primarily based on the raw material that is not reared for meat purpose but serves the secondary role after passing their viable life in primary field. The industry is also facing problem of social prejudice and meat is taboo for certain communities. But scenario is now changing and people are coming forward to organise the sector. Now the society is accepting the facts that meat is an only source of cheap and nutritious food to million of people in India and the good source of animal protein for large segment of Indian population, particularly landless, small and marginal farmers.

India ranks fifth in the world meat production with the annual meat production of about 6.3 million tones which is 2.21% percent of world meat production. In the last two decades meat industry in India has grown @ 4.5% whereas, during the last five years, this segment has been growing very fast at the rate of 27% annually. It has a good future if given proper attention by the Government and Private Entrepreneurs. In total meat production, share of cattle is 17.34%, buffalo 23.3%, sheep 4.6%, goat 9.4%, pigs 5.3%, poultry 36.6% and others 3.4%. The share of various meat types in total Indian meat production accounts buffalo meat 1.5 million tones, beef 1.28 million tones, mutton 0.24 million tones, chevon 0.53 million tones, pork 0.50 million tones, chicken meat 2.20 million tones and duck meat 0.07 million tones. To produce the above quantities, the extraction or slaughter rates in cattle are about 7.9%, buffaloes 11.1%, sheep 47.9%, goat 37.9%, pigs 88.9% and poultry 73.6%. In the world total meat production Indian cattle meat shares 13.1%, buffalo meat 55.8%, mutton 5.7% and chevon 14.9%. However, India is having world’s 15.0% (210 million) cattle, 57.0 %( 111 million) buffaloes, 7.0 %( 74 million) sheep, 17.0 %( 154 million) goat and 1.5% pigs. Overall contribution of meat sector in total output of Livestock sector was Rs 25984 crores in the year 2004-2005.

Sensory evaluation is a scientific method of evaluating foods including meat products that applies principles of experimental design and statistical analysis through the use of human senses like sight, smell, taste, touch and hearing. It is also called organoleptic evaluation in which we measure, analyse and interpret reactions to those characteristics of materials as they are perceived by the human senses. These attributes can be perceived well by the human sense organs as compared to instruments available for this purpose. It is a fact that no single instrument is able to assess all the attributes of meat products. With the help of these instruments we can very well evaluate the single quality attribute of meat product i.e. shear force instrument or penetrometer is good for knowing the texture and refractometer is for colour interpretation.

The gaseous envelope surrounding the earth is called atmosphere. Thus, atmosphere can be defined as the dynamic layer surrounding the earth above its surface containing various gases, moisture, aerosols, etc. The atmosphere is retained by earth’s gravity.

The atmosphere protects life on earth by absorbing ultraviolet solar radiation, warming the earth’s surface through heat retention and reducing temperature extremes between day and night. The common name given to the atmospheric gases used in breathing and photosynthesis is air. The atmosphere has a mass of about 5.15 × 10¹⁸ kg, three quarters of which is within about 11 km from the surface. The atmosphere becomes thinner and thinner with increasing altitude, with no definite boundary between the atmosphere and outer space. The imaginary ‘Karman line’ lies at an altitude of 100 km above the mean sea level, and commonly represents the boundary between the earth’s atmosphere and outer space. The study of earth’s atmosphere and its processes is called atmospheric science or ‘aerology’. The atmosphere serves the life-system on the earth by the following activities.

A big layer of air called the atmosphere surrounds the earth. The air within this layer moves from place to place when it warms up or cools down. This moving air is known as wind. In other words, air in motion is called wind. Winds move moisture and heat around the world and also produce much of our weather.

The strength of the wind can vary enormously. Sometimes air moves slowly and the wind is barely noticeable. When the weather is clear there may be a gentle breeze. When the wind is still very light, but it can be felt and there may be rustlings by leaves. At other times, the air can move very quickly and become a gale or hurricane, blowing down trees and damaging electric poles and buildings.

Winds are part of a global air circulation system that acts to balance temperature and pressure around the world. Different parts of the world receive different amounts of heat from the sun. This differential heating in turn results in differences in temperature and air pressure around the world, which drives the world’s winds.

As equatorial areas are heated most, the air above them warms and rises as it becomes lighter than the surrounding air, causing an area of low pressure. In cooler areas, the air sinks because it is heavier and results in an area of high pressure. Winds will blow as air is squashed out by the sinking cold air and drawn in under the rising warm air. Any difference in temperature like this will always cause a difference in air pressure, and therefore winds will blow. These movements result in a global wind pattern, with air moving between different areas around the world and also at different heights in the atmosphere. Colder air from the poles tends to sink and move towards the equator closer to the surface of the earth. In contrast, warm air from the equator rises and moves towards the poles high in the atmosphere because it is lighter.
