Homoeopathy system of medicine is the system of healing suited to all the young, and the old, the rich and the poor, the people in the developed as well as the underdeveloped countries and for persons in any place or climate. This is not to take away from the value and utility of the other prevalent systems of medicine. The aim of every science of healing is the relief of sick. Every system is successful in its own fashion. Homoeopathy too fights sickness and does so with remarkable results. Additionally the cost of diagnosis in this system is negligible because the diagnosis is by and large symptomatic. The medicine itself is inexpensive. Notable efficacy and low costs are the strong points of homoeopathic medicine. There are no toxic effects of the drugs, no side effects. The time taken for the medicine to show improvement is not long. Homoeopathic medicines are easy to store and have a long life.

Homoeopathy has been attacked again and again on the ground that the potencised drugs cannot be tested in a laboratory. But that way a number of phenomenon is still outside the pale of conventional science. However, laboratory tests have been going in many countries and certain phenomenon not acceptable to conventional scientific beliefs have been observed.

The homoeopathic system of medicine develops for its special use, the inner medicinal powers of the crude substances by means of a process peculiar to it and which has never been tried, whereby they only all become immeasurably and penetratingly efficacious and remedial. Even those that in the crude state give no evidence of the slightest medicinal power on the human body.

This remarkable change in the qualities of natural bodies develops the latent, hidden powers, which influence the body, change the well-being. This is affected by mechanical action upon their smallest particles by means of rubbing and shaking and through the addition of an indifferent substance, dry or fluid. This process is called dynamization; potencizing and the products are dynamizations or potencies in different degrees.

1. Introduction

Raw milk is an emulsion. It is a mixture of milkfat globules, Solid Not Fat (SNF) and water. Over time, milkfat globule separate out from milk serum and comes to the surface of milk as a layer of cream due to the low density of milkfat or due to heating of milk. When milk is heated rapidly and continuously, some of the water in it evaporates from the surface. This exposes proteins and fat molecules, which bind and dry out and forms a skin like film on the surface. 

ABSTRACT

The Cry2A proteins are promising candidates for managing the development of Cry1Ac resistance in insects. The Cry2A class of proteins is different from that of Cry1A, and experiments have shown that insects resistant to Cry1Ac are not cross-resistant to Cry2A proteins. However, the Cry2A proteins are less toxic than Cry1Ac to the polyphagous pest Helicoverpa armigera. Structure-based protein engineering of Cry toxins may pave the way for directed evolution of variants with broad spectrum of insect species specificity, enhanced potency, and stability. In the present study homology modeling of Cry2Ac was done using DeepView software. The template for Cry2Ac protein sequence (accession number X57252) was selected using ExPdb template search. The raw sequence of the Cry2Ac was superimposed over the Cry2Aa PDB template (1I5P). The superimposed model was submitted to the SWISS Model server. After receiving the Cry2Ac model, energy minimization was done using Gromos96. The threading energy and force field energy were calculated. The homology model of Cry2Ac made by us along with the Cry2Ac model from the SWISS-MODEL Repository was used for comparative analysis of receptor binding regions of Cry2Aa. Results showed variation between the two highly homologous Cry2A proteins in their receptor binding regions which may account for differences in spectrum of insecticidal activity.

Abstract

When only sequence data is available, homology modeling has become a useful tool for predicting protein structure. Protein structure is often more important than sequence data when evaluating protein function. Homology modeling, also known as comparative modeling, is based on the principle that two sequences that exhibit a high degree of identity or similarity will also share similar structures. This chapter explores the steps involved in homology modeling, including template selection, alignment, model building, refinement, and validation. The Ramachandran plot is a valuable tool for assessing the conformation and bond angles in a protein model, and we discuss its significance in the context of homology modeling. Ultimately, homology modeling is an effective method for predicting protein structure and has numerous applications in protein engineering, drug discovery, and other fields.

Since bees are indicator species, their abundance on earth serves as a barometer for environmental conditions and the health of ecosystems. With up to 60,000 honey bees living in a single hive, each with a distinct job, the life of a bee is undoubtedly one of nature’s greatest miracles. There is much to be learnt from the exquisitely smart, well-organized lives of bees. Around the world, honey bee hives have been experiencing severe decreases over the past ten years, and local pollinating species are also experiencing significant losses. A growing number of studies point to a particular class of pesticides as the principal cause of the worldwide pollinator disaster, and if our government agencies and certain legislators don’t act quickly, the pollinator situation will only get worse.

Rachel Carson written Silent Spring 50 years ago, she expressed her concerns about the use of systemic insecticides like neonicotinoids. We are currently seeing f irst-hand how her forecasts come true

“The world of systemic insecticides is a weird world, surpassing the imaginings of the brothers Grimm… It is a world where the enchanted forest of the fairy tales has become the poisonous forest in which an insect that chews a leaf or sucks the sap of a plant is doomed. It is a world where a flea bites a dog, and dies because the dog’s blood has been made poisonous, where an insect may die from vapors emanating from a plant it has never touched, where a bee may carry poisonous nectar back to its hive and presently produce poisonous honey (Rachel Caron, Silent Spring)”.

Etiology

Hook worm dermatitis is uncommon or rare skin disease due to larval migration of the normal life cycle of Ancylostoma braziliensis and Ancylostoma caninum. It is mainly due to hypersensitive reactions against migrating third stage larvae in the distal extremities.

In the perspective of the accelerating national growth rate of 8% recorded at the end of the 10th Plan to a projected growth rate of 10% by the end of the 11th Plan, yielding an average GDP growth rate of about 9% it was appearing that the nation is going to have a strong footing of development. It can be made possible only through working with them by appreciating their struggle for survival using all round innovative measures coming out of their daily life experiences and traditional knowledge. Technopreneur Promotion Programme (TePP) is a unique scheme of Government of India for development of society especially by promoting the intellectual properties of grass- root level innovators coming out from the society with a source of inspiration arising out of their daily life struggle for existence. In spite of its limited publicity in remote areas an awareness of this programme has often been found to raise great hope to the villagers to do something for their society exploring the ideas generated from the experiences of life with the help of local resources. Such naturally grown innovation can be found undoubtedly novel and the idea can change their world of dreaming for a more prosperous life by bringing changes in socioeconomic pattern of trade and employment in rural areas with proper support from Government if India through the scheme like TePP.

Introduction

During transition period and lactation, the high-producing dairy cows undergo a period of extensive tissue catabolism because of negative nutrient balance. Homeorrhetic mechanism at this stage ensures that nutrients are partitioned to favour the growth of fetus prepartum and meet the demand of nutrients in early lactation. Simultaneously the homeostasis secures survival of the animal body functions. However, a decline in feed intake in transition period leads to metabolic disturbances and low milk production in early lactation. The postpartum negative nutrient balance impairs immune and reproductive functions in dairy cows and buffaloes. The increased demand for nutrients and decreased dry matter intake results in low circulating glucose and insulin levels and elevated non-esterified fatty acids (NEFA) and ketone bodies postpartum. The energetic status of a cow or buffalo modulates the secretion of hormones that play key roles in growth of ovarian follicles, ovulation, corpus luteum (CL) formation, and oocyte competence. The NEBAL not only limits milk production potential but also has a detrimental effect on immune cells. Negative nutrient balance is associated with changes in the pattern of ovarian follicle growth and oocyte quality and alteration in endocrines. In addition, cows under negative nutrient balance have extended periods of anovulation. These changes could be minimized by supplementing energy rich supplements like prilled fat or any bypass fat preparations.

1. INTRODUCTION

In plants, seed dormancy is controlled by temperature, light and hormones. Unlike animals, which secrete hormones from special glands, hormones are always present in plant cells. Each plant hormone plays multiple roles, depending on the site of action, the life stage of the plant and the hormone’s concentration. A plant hormone is any chemical that is produced in one part of the plant that has a targeted function elsewhere. Certain hormones induce and keep seeds in a dormant state, while others cause seeds to break dormancy and initiate germination They are stored in regions where stimulus are and then released for transport through either phloem or mesophyll when the appropriate stimulus occurs. These are chemical messengers influencing many patterns of plant development

The first theory is that the five classic plant hormones, auxin, cytokinins (CKs), gibberellins (GAs), ethylene, and abscisic acid (ABA), plus the new plant hormones, brassinosteroids (BAs), and salicylates or salicylic acids (SAs) can be gathered into three groups. These are growth hormones, stress hormones and shock hormones. Auxin and CKs are growth hormones. Ethylene, GAs, and brassinosteroids are stress hormones. ABAs and SAs are shock hormones. All three types of hormones are similar in that they fall within the classic definition of an intercellular hormone. They are made by a cell and are meant to affect the behavior of other cells, either in nearby tissue or at the opposite end of the plant.

ABA, also known as abscisic acid plays a direct role in dormancy release and germination. Ethylene and the gibberellins group of hormones are indirectly involved.

Introduction

For raising animal and its products especially protein, food and nutrition plays an important role. Feed cost comprises about 60% of total recurring expenditure. Feed additives play an increasingly important role in animal nutrition by augmenting the performance by maintaining the needs of essential nutrients, improving feed conversion therefore optimize feed utilization (Wenk, 2000). Feed additives are a group of feed ingredients that can cause a desired animal response in a non-nutrient role, such as rumen modifier, growth or metabolic modifier (Hutjens, 1991). These are used in micro quantities and require careful handling and mixing. The development and introduction of various new feed additives is a major and practical solution to improve the efficiency of animal production, to alleviate environmental pollution, to maintain animal health, welfare and to ensure the safe and of good quality food production.

Introduction

Hormones may be defined as specific chemical molecules produced in certain specific organs called specialized cells or endocrine glands. They are delivered into the blood stream or some other body fluid in minute amounts by the circulatory system of the body and their they exerts a physiological effect at a site of action remote from its origin, regulating numerous biological activities including growth, development, reproduction, water & electrolyte balance, storage & usage of energy etc.

In some developing countries, milk from horses (Equus caballus) and donkeys (Equus asinus) is an essential food for poor farmers. Generally, horses are more commonly used for dairy purposes in cool areas and donkeys in dry semi-arid regions. Milking equines is time-consuming and has to be repeated five or six times a day. In addition, an equine will not release milk unless it is stimulated by the presence of its foal. Mare’s milk is commonly consumed in the steppe areas of Central Asia, where a traditional lactic-alcoholic beverage called koumiss is produced through fermentation. Horse milk is also an important source of animal protein for pastoralists in Mongolia. The consumption of donkey milk has become very marginal. In some African communities, donkey milk is consumed for medical purposes.

Equus is a genus of mammals in the family Equidae, which includes horses, asses, and zebras. Within the Equidae, Equus is the only recognized existing genus, comprising seven living species. Like Equidae more broadly, Equus has numerous extinct species recognized only from fossils. Equines are odd-toed ungulates with slender legs, long heads, relatively long necks, manes (erect in most subspecies), and long tails. All species are herbivorous, and mostly grazers, with simpler digestive systems than ruminants but able to subsist on lower-quality vegetation. The chromosome number of a horse is 64 (2n).

1.    Why Oats are mostly preferred by horse?

Ans: Because oats are low in energy, rich in fibre (8-11%), very soft and easily ruptured duringmastication, highly palatable, rich in oil content (5%), better protein quality (high lysine), more readily digested in the S.I. than maize and barley and moreover it provides a more open textured material in the stomach due to high fibre and are thus least likely to cause colic compared to other cereals.

2.    Why wheat is most likely cereal to cause colic in horse?

Ans: Because of its high gluten content since gluten leads to the formation of doughy lump in the stomach. Hence wheat should not be used exceptin small quantities or in low levels.

3.    Why Excessive feeding of wheat bran leads to ‘Big head disease’ or ‘Millers disease’ in horse?

Ans: It is due to an imbalance ratio of Ca and P in this bran i.e high in P and low in Ca. So, due to a Ca deficiency, Ca is withdrawn from the bone and the bone is replaced by a proliferationof fibrous connective tissue whichismainlyfound in the skull or jaw.

Horticulture and allied sector are integral elements for food and nutritional security in the country. Horticulture is the main segment, while its various sub- segments are fruits, vegetables, aromatic and herbal plants, flowers, spices, tubers, plantation crops and ornamental plants. All these are regarded as essential ingredients of economic security. The wide range of agro-climatic conditions of India is conducive for growing a large variety of horticultural crops, including, root and tuber crops, mushroom and ornamental crops.

The Government of India recognized horticulture crops as a means of diversification in agriculture in an eco-friendly manner through efficient use of land and optimum utilization of natural resources. Horticulture seeks to create ample opportunities for employment, particularly for unemployed youths and women folk. India has maintained leadership in the production of many commodities like fruits, vegetables, flowers and ornamental plants and particularly in landscape business.

India is coming up in landscaping and ornamental horticulture. There is wide scope since large number of MNC and business houses have come up in India. The purchasing power of people has increased to a greater extent.

Thus, over the years, much progress are made for advancement of horticulture and allied sector. Rising investments resulted in increased production and availability of horticultural produces in the rural and urban areas. Many schemes and policies were introduced from time to time for upliftment and commercialization of the sector. Large number of investors are taking advantage of the existing potentials in the sector, as well as trying to explore the untapped potentials in the field of horticulture.

INTRODUCTION

Medicinal and aromatic plants (MAPs) play a critical role in the healthcare provision of much of the world’s population, whether they are used to make a decoction in rural Africa, to extract an alkaloid in Switzerland or as a health food supplement in the United States. MAPs are important from several perspectives like preventive and curative treatments and are source of income to underprivileged or aboriginal people who collect these herbal plants from forests or cultivate on their field. The importance and value of traditional and indigenous herbal medicine was the subject of WHO’s campaign during the 70’s, which led to an appeal to all member countries to do their utmost to preserve their national heritage in the form of ethno-medicine and ethno-pharmacology and to re-include the use of known and tested medicinal plants and derivatives into their primary health care in rural areas, as well as an alternative when modern medicine is not available.  Out of more than 400 plants species used for production of medicine by the Indian herbal industry, fewer than 20 species are currently under cultivation in different parts of the country (Uniyal et al. 2000). According to the Department of Ayurveda, Yoga and Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homoepathy (AYUSH), India has 5,662 varieties of medicinal plants and of these trading takes place in 460, while 178 are exported in huge quantities (over 100 metric tonnes per year) and about 70 per cent of India’s population use traditional medicines derived from numerous plant species (Niraj et al. 2002; Saigal et al. 2002). It is estimated that in developing countries, about 90 per cent of medicinal and aromatic plants are harvested from wild while cultivated lands account only for 10 per cent of the total medicinal plants in active trade (Karki 2002). The increasing demand calls for cultivation of these valuable healers on commercial basis. However, the available land cannot be brought directly under MAPs cultivation. There is need to identify the landuse systems, already in practice, which may provide condition congenial for better growth and development of medicinal and aromatic plants as they are naturally getting in the wild. Tree plantations, fruit orchards and home gardens seems to be the viable option for commercial cultivation. Out of these fruit orchards could be more potential land use. Fruit trees have long gestation period of 8-10 years and till canopy development, the interspaces can be conveniently used for cultivation of medicinal and aromatic crops to get additional income. Even at later stages of orchard development trees have minimal adverse affect on the growth and yields of a number of medicinal plants grown as intercrops compared to the yields in the open (Nair et al. 1989), in some instances there may be reduction of yield of MAPs and fruit component, but the combined returns from both the components are greater than from sole cultivation. This temporal scale is even more in case of shade loving medicinal and aromatic plants. Peasants prefer fruit trees on their farms (Raintree 1992; Franzel et al. 1996) with perspective of contribution to consumption (Salam et al. 2000) and income generation (Ayuk et al. 1999; Delobel et al. 1991). Thus, these components are well thought-out to be beneficial due to low labour input and comparatively high returns round the year. This chapter presents a brief review of growth, yield and economic viability of such tree-crop combinations and further explore their potential under fruit tree based horti-medicinal agroforestry systems.

Introduction

In India ,the increasing demographic pressure with developmental activities are causing tremendous pressure in utilization of natural resources leading to various kinds of ecological problems and land degradation. The Govt. of India has for long considers watersheds as catalysts for development activities in rain-fed areas. Watershed, simple stated as a manageable hydrological unit. Watershed development approach calls for an integrated effort of many courts, viz, area development, resource identification and management programme- planning, implementation and evaluation and also the disciplines and functionary involved. An integrated approach in watershed management, the development of agricultural land alone is not the criteria, but the development of the entire area covering a watershed from highest point (ridgeline) to outlet of the Nalah or natural stream will have to be considered.  For scientific development of watershed area, all natural resources such as water, land, human, vegetation, livestock, wildlife etc. have to properly identified, quantified, and appropriately utilized.

HORTICULTURAL CLASSIFICATION OF PLANTS

The Horticultural crops are majorly classified on the basis of its consumption and uses as fruits, vegetables, flowers, spices, medicinal, aromatic and plantation crops. Moreover, these crops have been further classified into various groups on the basis of their habitat, growth pattern, edapho-climatic requirements and uses. All branches of horticulture classified specifically as hereunder:

   1. Tropical fruits: These fruit crops are grown in tropical climatic regions which are geographically located between the parallels of 23° 27' South (Tropic of Capricorn) and 23° 27' North (Tropic of the Cancer) of the equator. They are generally evergreen and very sensitive to cold. Eg. Mango, Pineapple, Banana, Papaya, Citrus, Sapota, Avocado etc.
   2. Sub-tropical fruits: Fruit crops are grown in between temperate and tropical climatic regions. They may be either deciduous or evergreen nature. Eg. Mango, guava, citrus, durian, jackfruit, bread fruit etc.

1.1 Introduction

The word ‘horticulture’ was first used in 1600’s, and is derived from two Latin words, ‘hortus’(garden) and ‘cultûra’(cultivation), and it means ‘the culture (cultivation) of garden plants’. Relf (1992) defined “horticulture as an applied science and art of growing fruits, vegetables, herbs and spices, nuts, tubers, aromatic and medicinal plants, plantation crops, mushrooms and ornamental plants which include shrubs, flowering plants and turfs stimulating minds, spirits and emotions of individuals, enriching health and wellness of communities, and linking human beings to nature and its landscaped exteriors for wellness and wellbeing”. Fruits and vegetables are nourishing and protective foods. It has been recognized that fruits are a rich source of antioxidants which protect us from dreadful diseases. Vegetables and fruits contain vitamin E, K, and  carotene in addition to minerals like zinc, copper and manganese. To meet the ever-increasing demand of the country for fruits, vegetables, tubers, spices, flowers, ornamentals etc., we must strive hard to deliver better cultivars in as many aspects as possible to the society so that human beings will be in sound health physically as well as mentally. To achieve this goal plant breeding in general, and horticultural plant breeding in particular will come to our help.

Introduction

The simultaneous cultivation of two or more crops in the same field is known as intercropping. Sustainable agriculture aims to at least build agricultural systems that are inspired by nature. Efficiency and the idea that there are no waste products in nature are key components of sustainable agriculture since nature incorporates plants and animals into a variety of landscapes. When domesticating crops replaced hunting and gathering, the landscape became altered. Due to humankind’s limited ability to produce a wide variety of agricultural plants and livestock, the amount of biological diversity throughout a large portion of the planet has significantly decreased. In nature, cooperation predominates over competition. Mutually beneficial interactions between species within groups are one example of cooperation. A few types of creatures may initially inhabit an abandoned agricultural field if it is left unattended and unplanted, but over several years, a complex community made up of numerous wild species emerges. When a community reaches a high level of variety, it becomes stable. Diverse communities are stable and have fewer swings in species abundance. Enterprise diversification, crop rotation, the use of windbreaks, the provision of more habitats for microorganisms, intercropping, and the integration of crop farming with animal production are methods that increase diversity and stability on the farm (Reddy and Willey,1981; Reddy et al., 1992). Each crop should have enough room while growing with another one or more to enhance cooperation and minimize competition. This is made possible by the elements of spatial layout, plant density, crop maturity dates, and plant architecture. The spatial arrangements are Row intercropping— Growing two or more crops together at the same time with at least one crop planted in rows; Strip intercropping— Growing two or more crops together in strips wide enough to separate crop production using machines, but close enough to interact; Mixed cropping— Growing two or more crops together in no distinct row arrangement; Relay intercropping— Plant a second crop into a standing crop at a time when the standing crop is at its reproductive stage but before harvesting.

India’s horticulture sector stands as a beacon of promise and potential within the agricultural landscape, showcasing a rich diversity of fruits, vegetables, tubers, spices, flowers, medicinal and ornamental plants as well as herbs. This sector provides livelihoods for millions of farmers and plays a crucial role in ensuring food security and nutritional well-being. Amidst the challenges posed by climate change and environmental degradation, the resilience of horticultural crops becomes increasingly significant. Diversifying towards resilient crops and sustainable practices not only mitigates risks but also enhances the sector’s adaptability to changing climatic conditions. Investment in research and development to breed climate-resilient varieties and promote agroecological approaches is imperative. Furthermore, promoting organic and niche horticulture products presents exciting opportunities for Indian farmers to capture premium markets both domestically and internationally. With growing consumer awareness and demand for healthy and nutritionally rich food, India’s horticulture sector is well-positioned to become a global leader in organic and exotic produce.The recent trend of exploring new crops within Indian horticulture promises to diversify farmers’ income sources and address emerging challenges such as climate change and shifting consumer preferences.

Introduction

Wide ranging Indian climatic conditions are well suited for boosting production of a variety of horticultural crops (fruits, vegetables, flower/ornamental/medicinal and aromatic crops) which presently hold an important position in the global scenario. Development was at a very low ebb till the Third Five-Year Plan and increased significantly since the Seventh Five Year Plan (Rs.10,000 millions plan outlay). Government of India established National Horticultural Board (NHB) in 1984 and Agriculture and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) in 1986 to facilitate its larger development. The outlay is expected to increase even more in the Tenth Plan. Significant progress has been made in area expansion of different horticultural crops resulting in higher production. Besides, use of modern technologies has also brought about improvement in productivity. More than 50 per cent increase in production is seen in many of the horticulture crops during last one decade.

The efficient planning and implementation of different developmental programs on horticultural crops depends on production parameters like soil suitability, varietals dominance, marketable surplus, marketing channels, post harvest handling practices, cost of cultivation and market availability for sustained production. In addition, information on latest technologies developed by various research organizations on horticultural improvement, production, protection and post-harvest technologies are needed to be collected and made available to the scientists, planners and managers working in the related fields. But the available information on this aspect is scattered and the database is too weak to provide adequate support for developmental strategies. The digitization of comprehensive database on horticultural crops will definitely enhance the pace of increasing the area, production, productivity and promoting industry of horticultural crops that have taken lead in the new millennium with reference to nutritional quality of food and export potential. A strong, well-knit database to support need-based, market-driven and cost-effective horticultural development is imperative. Therefore, under National Agricultural Technology Project (NATP) a Mission Mode Sub-project on “Integrated National Agricultural Resources Information System (INARIS)” has been taken up to evolve a comprehensive computerized data management system on various agricultural resources like crops, animals, fishes and natural resources by harnessing RDBMS and GIS. The Co-operating Center at Indian Institute of Horticultural Research, Bangalore has developed the “Horticultural Resources Information System” with the objectives of (i) integrating existing databases in horticulture, (ii) designing and developing a comprehensive database in horticulture and (iii) developing resource maps of major horticultural crops in the country by integrating attribute and spatial data through GIS. In addition to simple storage and retrieval it will include other functions such as manipulation and dissemination of information to various users. This database will be integrated with 13 other Co-operating Centers dealing with different agricultural resources through a virtual private network (VPN). The Lead Center at Indian Agricultural Statistics Research Institute, New Delhi provide warehouse facility with a capability to analyze the data variously and provide report as cubes, tables and graphs to form a national database to cater to the needs of the users through a website. The facility of retrieving information as value-added maps using GIS will also be built in.

5.1 Introduction

A system is a group of interacting components, operating together for a common purpose, capable of reacting as a whole to external stimuli; it is unaffected directly by its own outputs and has a specified boundary based on the inclusion of all significant feedbacks. For example, the human body is a system — it has a boundary (e.g., the skin) enclosing a number of components (heart, lungs) that interact (the heart pumps blood to the lungs) for a common purpose (to maintain and operate the living body) (Rana and Rana 2011).The main aim of orchard management in tropical and sub-tropical fruits, is to increase land use efficiency by use of inter-crops, multiple crops, multi-storeyed crops systems etc. in obtaining maximum income from the available land. Apart from these, cover crops, sod culture, herbicides, minimum tillage etc. are also common.

5.1.1 Cropping Systems

It is an important component of a farming system that represents a cropping pattern used on a farm and their interaction with farm resources, other farm enterprises and available technology, which determine their makeup.

Horticulture is an art and science of growing plants. It is the practice of engaging ailing people in various horticultural activities such as gardening and flower arrangements in order to improve their physical, mental and spiritual health. Research confirms that health benefits escalate manifold when people connect with nature and plants by viewing and/or interacting with them. Major benefits of horticultural therapy includes sensory simulation and mood enhancement, mental relaxation, improvement of memory and concentration and an overall feeling of wellness. Horticulture therapy also helps in cultivating positive emotions and provides a meditative mood. It eases both physical and emotional pains and also improves social skills. It is proven that a simple viewing of a garden benefits a person both physically and mentally.

This practice has been used as therapy for centuries. In 1798, Dr. Benjamin Rush, considered as the “Father of American Psychiatry” documented that gardening has positive effects on mentally ill patients. Following World War, II gardening was used as a form of occupational therapy for war veterans. The concept of using nature to improve human health began to gain credibility in 1970’s. Rachel and Stephen Kaplan (1989) found that natural environments had relaxing and restoration benefits for people. The Journal of Therapeutic Horticulture, a peer-reviewed publication of the American Horticultural Therapy Association, has published authentic research papers since 1986. The American Horticultural Therapy Association (AHTA) serves to promote and advance horticultural therapy as a therapeutic intervention and rehabilitative approach. Degrees and certificate programs in horticultural therapy are offered at several colleges and universities and information is available on AHTA website.

Horticultural therapy is a worldwide practice and recognized as an effective treatment for clients of all ages and abilities. It is being used in several diverse settings including hospitals, rehabilitation centres, youth outreach and recovery programs, nursing homes, senior care facilities, prisons, mental health facilities, schools, botanical gardens etc. The client is engaged in horticultural activities facilitated by some trained therapists to achieve specific and documented goals. AHTA believes that horticultural therapy is an active process that occurs in the context of an established treatment plan where the process itself is considered as the therapeutic activity rather than the end product.

Horticulture therapy is a growing profession in rehabilitation and addiction centers, vocational centers, youth mental health programs, hospitals and nursing homes, and old age homes or senior citizen centers, mental health centers, schools and colleges.

Introduction

Nowadays, horticultural fields are expanding due to the increasing demand for various utilizations. Increased production is leading to an increase in exports. The global horticulture market value of about 20.77 billion USD was estimated in 2021 and targeted to attain 40.24 billion USD by 2026 (Global Market Estimates, 2021). From the production of horticultural foods, various factors are involved in the hazardous environmental appearance. Uncontrolled use of pesticides and residual effects of various chemicals initiate the primary threats to nature by creating a negative impact on soil, water, humans, animals, and wildlife species too (Sanchez-Bayo, 2011). Alone agricultural practices are not responsible for the production of horticultural wastes some other aspects are also included such as horticultural food processing industries as well as urban and peri-urban wastes. Food processing is an important sector of agriculture. Being highly perishable horticultural food processing became more necessary to increase the self-life as well as the value addition of these crops. But at the same time, these food processing industries where several processes such as production, processing, and preparation of food take place again result in the generation of huge quantities of waste material causing health hazards due to environmental pollution. The huge waste of food is due to a lack of control and ignorance of higher officials in this agro-economic sector. Another important source where waste management is equally important is Urban and peri-urban areas. Being a sink for horticultural produce (raw or processed) creates huge waste at the same time. The urban population is increasing between 3% and 3.5% per annum and the yearly increase in waste generation is around 5% annually (Agarwal et al., 2005).

The Indian subcontinent is bestowed with a great variety of climate and soil conditions. Broadly the country can be divided into tropical, subtropical and temperate regions, within each broad category there are differences due to rainfall, humidity, altitude etc. Considering these aspects six different horticultural zones have been identified so that appropriate choice of the crops can be made and development is planned. They are;

Temperate: Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, North Uttarakhand, Sikkim and part of Arunachal Pradesh.

N.W. Subtropical: Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Central Uttar Pradesh and North Madhya Pradesh.

N.E. Subtropical: Bihar, Jharkhand, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur.

Central tropical: South Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Orissa and West Bengal.

Southern tropical: Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu.

Coastal tropical humid: Konkan, Goa, Kerala, Western Ghats, Eastern Ghats in Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Orissa.

The Horticultural crops show wider adaptation and therefore exact delineation of the agro-climatic areas specific to each crops is not possible, except for the typical temperate and tropical species. However, our country can be broadly divided into seven zones for horticultural crops as indicated below:

1. Temperate Northern Region

Comprising of states of Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Hilly areas of Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal. Temperate fruits, cool season vegetables are the important horticultural crops in the zone.

2. North Western Arid Region

Comprising ofthe entire Rajasthan state, Gujarat and parts ofPunjab & Haryana. Arid fruit crops like ber, pomegranate, amla, date palm, wood apple and seed spices like coriander, cumin, fennel occupy major area in this zone.

3. North Eastern Sub-tropical Humid Region

Comprising of states and union territories like Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland and Tripura. Fruit crops like banana, pineapple, citrus, jack besides plantation crops like tea and large cardamom are also grown here.

Introduction

Since times immemorial, world agriculture is following the traditional agri-horticultural methods for livelihood support. With unusual growth of population and faster development of industrial sector, a steep competition surfaced among the domestic, industrial and agricultural sectors for land, water and other natural resources. Though agriculture uses a major chunk of land and water for crop production, it becomes insufficient to provide food, nutritional and aesthetic security to the growing millions at global level in general and the third world nations in particular. Hence, there lies a need to take the avenue of Integrated Farming practices by following the logics of Precision Farming. All over the world, farmers work hard but do not make money, especially small farmers because there is very little left after they pay for all inputs (seeds, livestock breeds, fertilizers, pesticides, energy, feed, labour, etc.). The emergence of Integrated Farming Systems (IFS) based on horticulture farming could help to develop a framework for an alternative development model to improve the feasibility of small sized farming operations in relation to larger ones. Integrated farming system (or integrated agriculture) is a commonly and broadly used word to explain a more integrated approach to farming as compared to monoculture approaches.

The Indian arid and semi-arid regions are characterized by immature, structure less, coarse textured soils with low water holding capacity and poor nutrient status. The moisture deficit conditions dominate for a long time throughout the year, which acts as the major limiting factor for establishment and growth of woody plant. Due to harsh edapho-climatic conditions, arable crop production is risky in arid and semi arid regions and threatening the agriculture, under such situation, horticulture based cropping system is considered effective strategy for improving productivity, employment oppornitues and nutritional security. Most of the cropping systems operating in the limited irrigated    area of arid ecosystems have very high water requirement and are highly unsustainable, hence location specific models have to be developed involving fruit crops, multipurpose tree species and arable crops in an agri-silvi-horti production system for increasing irrigation water use efficiency (IWUE), productivity, profitability and sustainability of the system. An attempt has been made to present the status of available research data on some of horticulture based farming systems for arid and semi arid regions

Fruits and vegetables play an important role in balanced diet. These provide not only energy rich food but also provide vital protective nutrients/elements and vitamins. Comparatively fruits and vegetables are the cheapest source of natural nutritive foods. Since most of Indians are vegetarians, the incorporation of horticulture produce in daily diet is essential for good health. Realizing the worth of fruits and vegetables in human health, Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) recommended the use of 120g fruits and 300g vegetables per capita per day. With the growing awareness and inclination towards vegetarianism worldwide the horticulture crops are gaining tremendous importance.

Etymologically the word “Horticulture” is derived from two Latin words viz. ‘Hortus’ [garden or enclosure] and ‘Cultura’ [cultivation]. So, literally horticulture means ‘garden or enclosure culture’ or ‘cultivation of garden crops within protected enclosures’.

Garden: Garden is a broad term derived from the Latin word Gyrdan meaning “to enclose”.

DIVISIONS AND DEFINITION OF HORTICULTURE

Pomology: (pomum = fruits, logy = science) It is a branch of horticulture which deals with study or cultivation of fruit crops starting from raising of saplings and intercultural to harvesting operations. The ‘pomology’ term is derived from latin word pomum (means fruits) and greek word logy (means science).

Abstract

Deserts cover about one fifth of the earth’s land surface. Most of hot and dry deserts are near the Tropics of Cancer or the Tropics of Capricorn. Cold deserts are near the Arctic part of the word. Deserts are of two types: Hot and Cold. Some of the important among them are given in Table 1. Spread over an approximate area of 74,809sq km, the cold desert area in India covers 12 out of 131 desert blocks. Leh and Kargil districts of Ladakh in Jammu and Kashmir and Lahual and Spiti along with some part of Chamba and Kinnaur districts of Himachal Pradesh comprise this cold desert area (Fig 1). Similarly, their physiographic location and the consequent geomorphic processes shall unfolding in the region lend to this entire region a largely similar texture. In terms of area, the cold desert of Spiti may be too tiny as compared to the seven major cold deserts of the world (Table 1), but in terms of its high mountains, extreme climate and poor economic conditions of the people, it is one of the most scourged areas on the earth. Located in the interior of continents, away from any source of moisture, cold desert manifest resemble ecological verity and biological diversity. Their geographic remoteness and unfriendly climatic conductions greatly constrain economic growth and development. Envirmental degradation, which is on increase, is an additional cause of concern.

India is the seventh largest country in the world with a total geographical area of 328.73 million ha and has second largest population after China. The gross cropped area is 198.36 million hectares of which 70% is under rainfed cultivation. Around 55 to 60 per cent of the total population depends on agriculture and allied activities.

One of the important features of India prevalence is varied agro-climatic conditions; which enables to strengthen the horticulture industry. Many numbers of horticultural crops namely fruits, vegetables, ornamental and flower crops, spices and condiments, plantation crops, aromatic and medicinal plants, etc. are grown in almost all the parts of country. Thus, horticulture sector has become one of the major drivers of growth in agriculture having major share in agriculture GDP.

Horticulture involves the cultivation of fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, herbs, sprouts, mushrooms, algae, flowers, seaweeds, non-food crops such as grass and ornamental trees and plants. Various agricultural implements and tools are used in horticulture to facilitate the cultivation, care, and harvesting of these crops. Some common implements and tools used in horticulture:

Introduction

The ongoing need to create effective agricultural systems that can meet a farmer’s needs is driven by the demand for food, feed, fodder, and natural resources. More than 86 percent of Indian farm families, compromising marginal and small farmers, live in risky, diversified production conditions. There is limited room for horizontal growth of land for agriculture due to the increasing population and declining land per capita. Small and marginal farmers, who make up 84.97 percent of all operational holdings and operating 44.31 percent of the area, need a powerful tool to ensure income, livelihood security, nutritional security and employment in a sustainable manner.

After independence, the Government of India realized the need of diversification in agriculture during the mid-eighties with an objective to make it more profitable through efficient land use. Due to diverse agro-climatic conditions, rich diversity in genetic resources of horticultural crops, sincere efforts through education and research, implementation of standardized technology by horticulturist in the field has achieved not only the production, productivity and export of horticultural produce but also the food and nutritional security. Such horticulture development in India is proudly said as “Golden Revolution”. Horticulture is also said to be a sunrise industry as it has potential to raise farm income, provide livelihood security and earn foreign exchange through export.

The horticulture industry is now expanding in many commercial sectors such as cultivation, production, post-harvest handling, processing, marketing, etc. Horticulture crops are grown on an area of 10% of India’s gross cropped area, as compared to over 50% of the area under food grains production.

So, eventually, rural development emerges to be of much importance for the overall economic development of the nation. But it’s a big disgrace for us that the population in the majority lies below the line of poverty. The development of households in rural areas is of much significantly related to entrepreneurship. Entrepreneurship can be regarded as a tool to fasten up the process of rural development.

India is the second largest producer of fruits with a total production of 81.0 million tons from 6.98 million ha in 2012-13. The leading states in terms of area and production are:

India is bestowed with a varied agro-climate, which is highly favourable for growing a large number of horticultural crops such as fruits, vegetables, root tubers, ornamentals, aromatic plants, medicinal herbs, spices and plantation crops like coconut, arecanut, cashew and cocoa. It has emerged as an indispensable part of agriculture, offering a wide range of choices to the farmers for crop diversification. It also provides ample opportunities for sustaining large number of agro-industries which generate substantial employment opportunities. India has emerged as the second largest producer of fruits and vegetables; with largest producer of coconut, arecanut, cashew, ginger, turmeric, black pepper and tea, among plantation crops.

The changing scenario encourages private investment, to go for Hi-tech Horticulture with micro-propagation, protected cultivation, drip irrigation, fertigation and integrated nutrient and pest management, besides making use of latest post harvest measures particularly in the case of perishable commodities. As a result, horticulture crop production has moved from rural confines to commercial ventures and has attracted youth since it has proved to be intellectually satisfying and economically rewarding. It is essential to appreciate the contribution of horticulture, landscaping and gardening in the hospitality industry. Aesthetic use of horticulture freshens up the atmosphere, enhances the look of the property and creates a lasting impression on guests. It also has a beneficial effect on the health.

Early reports are always path finders for future research. Earlier studies at CSIR-NBRI on characterization of bougainvillea is so important that it should be highlighted for researchers. Horto-taxonomical description of the leading Bougainvillea species/cultivars have been prepared according to their affinities to the species and hybrid seedlings (Sharma 1986a,b, 1996, Srinivas 1995, Khoshoo 1971a,b, Zadoo et al., 1975a, Jayanthi 1999).

While much has been written about the taxonomy of wild plants, the cultivated plants have always been looked at with suspicion by taxonomists. There might have feeling that cultivated plants are not natural and therefore fall outside the orbit of a taxonomist. It may be that taxonomy of cultivated plants is more difficult due to their extensive distribution needing wide sampling, rampant hybridization and high mutation rate, leading to diversity in their variation patterns. One of the principal advantages of the study of cultivated plants is that more often we know their genetic-evolutionary race history, together with its reasons and diversity. There is, therefore, a need to take up, what may be called as Hortorium Taxonomy, i.e. taxonomy of the cultivated plants so as to put the subject on a proper footing as a prelude to writing a ‘Flora of the Cultivated Plants of India’. The related wild species together with the elemental, basal or parental species of a cultivated species should be classified according to the rule of the International Code of Nomenclature for Cultivated plants based on the cultivar concept. A cultivar is not to be confused with a botanical variety.

Hospitality industry is the second largest industry in the world. It is well diversified and can be chosen as per the interest. Hospitality management involves planning, organizing, directing and controlling human and other resources within the different segments of hospitality industry i.e. lodging, restaurant, travel and tourism, institutional management, recreational management, meeting and convention planning industries. Although, these all are separate but related segments of the hospitality industry and are interrelated to provide good and efficient services to the guests and users. Hospitality industry provides services which are need oriented and differ in various parts of the world as per regions and the traditional styles.

The first building created specifically for hotel was ‘City Hotel’ with 73 rooms at 115 Broadway, New York in 1794. Pallonjee Pestonjee established the very first western-style hotel in India, “The Bristol Hotel” in Mumbai in 1840. According to the report of the department of Tourism, Government of India, at the end of the year 2004, there were 167 Five star hotels with approx. 28,900 rooms, whereas 126 Four star hotels, with 8,831 rooms [2]. To expedite the ongoing process of classification/re-classification of functioning hotels in one to three star categories, five Regional Committees have also been set up in Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Guwahati and Chennai to conduct inspection [3].

Abstract

Cultivated cucurbitaceous plants viz., pumpkin, Cucurbita moschata Duch ex Poir.; karingada, Citrullus lanatus (Thunb.); ridge gourd, Luffa acutangula Roxb.; sponge gourd, Luffa cylindrica Roemer and cucumber, Cucumis sativus (L.) and wild cucurbitaceous plants viz., little gourd, Coccinia grandis (L.); kan kareli, Momordica charantia (L.); Gothamada, Cucumis callosus (Rott.) Cogr.; tutar vela, Luffa acutangula (L.); tumada, Citrullus colocynthis (L.); kankoda, Momordica dioica Roxb. and ankhfooti, Trichosanthes bracteata (Lam.) were recorded as hosts of fruit flies in Banaskantha district of north Gujarat. Melon fly, Bactrocera cucurbitae and Ethiopian fruit fly, Dacus ciliatus were the major fruit fly species infesting these cucurbitaceous plant. The relative abundance of both the species were almost the same in cultivated hosts whereas, D. ciliatus was more abundant in wild hosts.
