Time Series Analysis (TSA)

TSA is a crucial tool in the study of climate change, as it allows researchers to carefully examine patterns and changes in weather parameters over time. By analyzing time series data for temperature, precipitation, and other weather variables, scientists can identify trends and develop models that accurately describe the underlying structure of the series. These models can then be used to make predictions about future changes in weather patterns and the potential impacts of climate change on the environment and human society. The accurate forecasting of climate change using TSA can inform policy decisions and facilitate adaptation strategies to mitigate the effects of a changing climate.

Components of Time Series

When analyzing a time series, we often want to separate the different components that contribute to its overall behavior. The classical decomposition method is a widely used technique that breaks down a time series into four components: trend, seasonal, cyclical, and irregular.

Introduction

Time series analysis is a powerful tool for detecting and describing sequential processes, and it has become increasingly important in water resource management, especially in the context of global warming and climate change. Statistical methods have been widely used for analyzing climatological time series, such as precipitation, air temperature, and evapotranspiration, and hydrological time series, such as streamflow and surface water quality. However, most of the linear time series models depend on strict assumptions, such as homogeneity, trend-freeness, stationarity, non-periodicity, and lack of persistence, which are often violated in real-world datasets. Therefore, there is a need to develop new models that are more flexible and can accommodate different types of data (Machiwal & Jha, 2006).

One of the most popular and widely used classical time series models is the Autoregressive Integrated Moving Average (ARIMA) model, which has linear statistical properties and can be built using the Box-Jenkins methodology (Box and Jenkins, 1970). This model adoption is important for hydrological analysis because it can help in accurately characterizing and predicting the behavior of hydrological time series data. ARIMA models can capture complex patterns and trends in the data and can be used to forecast future values of the time series. This can help in better understanding the underlying processes that drive hydrological variability, such as changes in precipitation patterns or land use. Furthermore, hydrological data often exhibit seasonality and long-term trends, which can be accounted for in ARIMA modeling. ARIMA models can also be used for anomaly detection, identifying unusual events that may have significant impacts on water resources. Overall, ARIMA modeling provides a f lexible and powerful framework for analyzing and forecasting hydrological time series, which is essential for effective water resource management in the face of changing environmental conditions.

Introduction

Drought is defined as “when a region receives below average precipitation,  resulting in prolonged shortages in its water supply, whether surface  or ground water or atmospheric. It can have a substantial impact on the  ecosystem and agriculture of the affected region.” When drought arises in  a particular area, obviously it affects the crop and livestock production. In  order to reduce the effect of drought on farm productivity and to stabilize farm  income, farmers have to take some systematic measures, and such measures  are referred to as drought coping mechanisms. The objective of the study was  to identify the determinants of the adoption of drought-coping mechanisms to  balance and stabilize the farm income of the stakeholders. The study also helps  to know how to mitigate the effect of drought on farmer’s livelihoods.

The existing literature on the adoption of drought coping mechanisms is  quite meager. Akwango et al., (2016), Chandan Kumar Jha et al., (2017),  Emmanuella Ellis (2017), Ronald Twongyirwe et al., (2019) assessed the adoption strategies by considering multinomial logistic regression and the  results state that the use of different tree planting, crop varieties, soil and water  conservation, early and late planting, and furrow irrigation. The data related to  the adoption of any agriculture technology have qualitative response variables  with two or more categories. Most of the studies used qualitative response  models such as the logit model, probit model, and multivariate techniques like  discriminant analysis to measure the farmer’s perception toward the adoption  of any agriculture technology. In this study, we chose machine learning models  such as Decision tree, to assess the classification ability and to determine the  factors influencing adoption.

Introduction

Artificial intelligence (AI) is a field that mainly focuses on creating intelligent technologies that can easily perform tasks requiring human intelligence. One subfield is machine learning (ML), which enables machines to learn from data without being explicitly programmed. There are two main types of ML: supervised and unsupervised learning. Supervised learning trains machines on labeled data to predict output, while unsupervised learning trains machines on unlabeled data to find patterns. ML includes techniques such as regression, classification, clustering, and deep learning. ML has the potential to revolutionize many fields but also raises ethical, social, and legal issues. Developing trustworthy, responsible, and ethical ML systems is crucial. The MuCulloch and Pitts Model, proposed by Warren MuCulloch and Walter Pitts in 1943, is the first formal model of ML techniques. It is also known as the linear threshold gate (Fig. 1).

Maize is the second most important cereal crop in the world in terms of acreage and is called the ‘Queen of Cereals’. Corn production is a vital component of the global agricultural sector, contributing significantly to food, feed, and industrial demands. Maize, it is the most popular crop among the farmers all over the world. Maize grows throughout the year.USA leads in the production followed by China. India ranks 3rd in global maize production; the major maize-growing states are Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Bihar, and Uttar Pradesh. After the cereal production of wheat and rice, maize has significantly held a strong position in the third position out of the many crops produced in India. The major usage of maize is for human and animal consumption, it is also used in baby corn oil, corn starch, corn oil production, and much more. In the India, not less than 15 million farmers are engaged in maize cultivation and it generates employment for more than 650 million person-days at farming and its related ecosystem levels. Corn could be grown in variety of soil under Indian conditions but most preferable soil is light, free-draining soil that is full of organic matter. This type of soil obviously provides great drainage, water retention and nutrition. Rich, light soil enables the roots of corn plants to grow downwards quickly, which allows them to get a good foothold which stabilizes the plants effectively. Corn is known for its shallow root system, which means it is inherently unstable and will struggle in dry conditions, which makes soil quality all the more important. High winds can easily damage the plants and prevent pollination. Corn is a water-hungry crop with a shallow root system so it needs to be watered regularly. Under watered corn quickly becomes stressed, which results in early maturation and underdeveloped cobs.

The management of cereal waste has emerged as a critical issue in the quest for sustainable development, particularly given the central role that cereals play in the global food supply. Major cereal crops such as wheat, rice, maize, barley, and oats are foundational to diets around the world, providing essential nutrients and serving as key economic commodities. However, the inefficiencies and losses that occur at various stages of cereal production, from pre-harvest to consumption, represent a significant challenge. These losses not only contribute to food insecurity but also pose severe environmental concerns, including unnecessary greenhouse gas emissions and the squandering of valuable agricultural resources like water and energy. Addressing cereal waste is thus paramount for ensuring both food security and environmental sustainability.

The scope of cereal waste is broad and multifaceted, occurring at several critical junctures within the food supply chain. Pre-harvest losses are often due to pests, diseases, and unpredictable weather conditions that can devastate crops before they are even harvested. Post-harvest losses arise from inadequate storage facilities, improper handling, and inefficient transportation systems, which can lead to significant quantities of cereals being spoiled or lost. During processing, the use of outdated technologies and practices can result in considerable wastage. At the distribution level, logistical inefficiencies further compound the problem, while at the consumption stage, improper storage, over-purchasing, and food spoilage contribute significantly to waste. Each of these stages presents unique challenges and opportunities for reducing waste.

Agriculture is one of the prime economic sectors which generate enormous amount of waste from numerous agricultural operations and has a major share in the overall economy of India.The world’s human population has increased four times in the last century unaccompanied. This population boom,in part a result of improved agricultural and industrial techniques, places continuous pressure on food production in order to feed the growing numbers. Explosion of human population has directed the need in the rise of agricultural production which eventually hassled to the generation of huge amount of agricultural waste. India is an annual gross crop residue producer of which wheat and paddy residues. Agricultural wastes are as the residues from the growing and processing of raw agricultural products such as fruits, vegetables (vegetables and fruit peels) meat, poultry, dairy products and crops (Cereals crops- rice, wheat, maize, pulses, millets, oilseedsand sugarcane contributed the highest crop residue), cereals husks, legume haulms, sugarcane bagasse. Highest in the state of Uttar Pradesh is a leading state of India for residue generation followed by Punjab Maharashtra and West Bengal. Cereal crops (paddy, wheat, maize, millets) contributes 70% residue. Disposal of paddy residue has turn out to be a huge problem in Indian states, resulting farmers prefer to burn the residues in-situ. Improper management practices like dumping of agricultural waste. Based on the global perspective of resource management, education and awareness in the field of waste management is in huge demand. Awareness programmes on these emerging issues could also improvise the regulation of agricultural waste management and lessen its possible health and environmental risks. Systematic utilization of agricultural waste also helps to improve environmental conditions by reducing pollution caused by disposal of huge agricultural waste. Agricultural waste is composed of organic wastes as animal excreta in the form of slurries and farmyard manures, spent mushroom compost.

Fruits and vegetables rank as the most consumed commodities among horticultural crops, whether eaten raw or processed into value-added products. However, the global increase in population and periodic disruptions in supply chains have heightened concerns over food waste. This waste originates post harvest at the farmer level and as leftovers from households, restaurants, and commercial establishments, with fruits and vegetable waste accounting for a substantial 42% of total food waste.

The composition of fruit and vegetable waste varies widely depending on plant species and tissues. Peels and seeds, for example, are rich in phytochemical compounds suitable for food flavourings and preservatives. Similarly, vegetable tissues containing carotenoids, vitamins, and fibres exhibit antioxidant and anti-diabetic properties, potentially mitigating human health issues. Therefore, efficiently utilizing these waste products in various applications not only offers environmental benefits but also addresses sustainability challenges effectively.

The primary problem facing humanity at the start of the new millennium is to provide sufficient sustenance for every person living on this continent, given the rapidly growing populations of the majority of Asian countries. As the amount of land per person continues to decline, several strategies are being used to boost agricultural output from these finite resources in order to satisfy the growing demand of the population. But maintaining adequate soil health levels to support healthy plant development is the fundamental requirement for maintaining food production from these shrinking land areas. Questions concerning the over-reliance on mineral fertilizers to maintain the health and, consequently, the productivity of this continent’s arable soils are frequently raised by the recent trend of consistently decreasing the use efficiency of mineral fertilizers under highly productive systems coupled with issues of gradual deterioration of soil health due to indiscriminate use of fertilizers. It is widely acknowledged that mineral fertilizers are limited to providing plant nutrients to soils; they are not able to address other physical, chemical, or biological aspects of soil health. Conversely, organic materials are far more beneficial in this regard. In light of this, the idea of an integrated plant nutrition system that incorporates both organic and inorganic nutrient sources has been developed and is gaining traction (Chattopadhyay, 2005). Because most tropical and subtropical nations’ arable soils have low levels of organic matter due to high temperatures and increased microbial activity, the integration of mineral fertilizers and organic manures is particularly important for many Asian countries (Gaur, 2006).

Animal waste or manures are the solid, semisolid, and liquid generated by the animals reared for the diverse aims such as production of milk, meat eggs and for other agricultural work. Animal wastes comprises of faeces urine, bedding materials (straw, sawdust, rice hulls), and other materials associated with animal production, such as leftover feed, soil, wash waters and any chemical or physical amendments used during manure handling and storage. An adult bovine weighing 400 kg approximately discharge 15-20 kg dung and 15-20 liters urine per day. The dung produced is discharged from the farm leads to the clogging of drainage pipes and act as a breeding site for the mosquitoes. Additionally, the animal manure contains a wide range of microorganism which can be hazardous to the health of humans and animal. These microorganisms can contaminate food, epidemics and risk to the public health. Contrary to this animal manure are eco-friendly source of plant nutrition to enrich & restore soil nutrients, conserve the micro-fauna of soil and act as a natural surface purifier. Dung manure contains basic elements critical to plant health i.e., nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and potassium (K) and several micro nutrients. Also, animal manure imparts beneficial qualities to the soil such as improves the physical and biological properties of soil, improves aeration and thus enhance the water holding capacity. However, in recent pass it has been observed that a lot problem of environment arises due to nitrates present in manure connected with irrational use of natural fertilizers used in the agriculture land. The natural fertilizers contain large quantity of organic nitrogen which coverts in to inorganic form through the process of mineralization and possess a serious risk to the environment. In addition to this the nitrogen may leach to the ground and surface water as compared to chemical fertilizer.

In a world grappling with the effects of unchecked waste generation, the pursuit of sustainable waste management solutions stands as a paramount challenge (Smith, 2020). In India, agriculture has evolved in its own way, it has sustained livelihood of millions and had transformed from being a food deficit country to a food exported. There were certain accelerated efforts taken in implementation of advanced resources and technology which transformed India to a self- sufficient country. However this irrational application of synthetic inputs has come with a cost,which resulted in generation of substantial amount of waste. Waste can be any residual substance which has lost its value to the original user after a certain period of its utilization(Gupta, 2019). Agricultural waste are the materials that are generated during or after farming activities which either have no use in the original process of production or may have been spoiled or left unused in the right time in certain cases. These waste that are generated during farming can be in solid,semisolid or liquid forms depending on the nature of farming activities. If these agri-wastes are left without proper treatment, they may have certain types of impact on the environment,for instance the pesticide residues may impact the grazing animal health and when the fertilizers volatize and leach causing an ill-effect on the aquatic ecosystem (Yadav, 2019). Certain Agri experts had opinion that these farm residues can be recognized as “resources out of place” instead of byproduct. The holistic management of farm resources with appropriate techniques can help in reutilization of the farm wastes in secondary production sectors thus minimizing resource utilization and intensifying work efficiency.

One of the main environmental problems is the improper disposal of agricultural waste, which has a negative impact on ecosystems when it is carelessly dumped into the environment. According to the majority of publications, burning, dumping, or storing the untreated and unused agro-industrial waste in a landfill are the methods used for disposal (Neh, 2020). Untreated trash increases the amount of greenhouse gases released into the atmosphere, which in turn aggravates climate change in a number of ways. This has detrimental consequences on the climate in addition to releasing more unwanted gaseous byproducts (Toop et al., 2017). As a result, substantial interventions are needed to use agro-waste sustainably. This can be achieved through the development of bioproducts with added value and sustainable energy technologies. Increased garbage output worldwide has put more stress on the environment, causing harm to soil, air, and water resources (Rao and Rathod, 2018). These effects jeopardize population health and the long-term sustainability of ecosystems. According to Zeidabadi et al. (2018), the agriculture sector produces between 21 and 37 percent of greenhouse emissions. A sustainable development paradigm that advocates for significant changes to traditional agricultural production techniques and waste management has emerged in response to this new reality. According to Torres-león et al. (2018), agro-wastes contain high amounts of complex carbohydrates, proteins, fibers, polyphenolic components, bioactive substances, etc. Organic compound wastes can be used as a raw material for a variety of agricultural, food, and pharmaceutical products, even if they are hazardous to the environment (Uzodinma et al., 2007). Because of their high nutrient content, agro-residues are not seen as trash; rather, they are exploited as a source material for new goods. The cost-effectiveness of conversion procedures for the development of bioproducts can be increased by using efficient pre-treatment technologies for agro-waste biomass, as well as by utilizing its biochemical properties and sophisticated conversion processes (Yusuf, 2017). The bioconversion of agricultural waste into enzymes and other bioactive compounds for the pharmaceutical industry, vermicompost, organic fertilizers, and biofuels for the agriculture sector, as well as nutraceuticals and food products, is greatly aided by microbial biotechnology and nanotechnology (Beltrán-Ramírez et al., 2019: Samborska et al., 2019). In the food and healthcare sectors, nanotechnology is being studied more and more because of its numerous potential uses. As previously indicated, the increased bioavailability and quantities of bioactive compounds significantly improve the potential for targeted delivery of bioactive compounds to particular tissues or organs. Nano-structured materials’ distinctive qualities and vast surface area make them potentially revolutionary for the food industry. Although the potential advantages of nanotechnology for society at large have been well acknowledged, food science has only lately started to investigate its uses (Del Rio Osorio et al., 2021).

In India alone, around 500 million tons of crop residue are produced yearly, with a significant portion utilized for fodder and fuel, while a surplus of 140 million tons remains, with approximately 92 million tons being burned annually. However, there has been a historical oversight in efficiently harnessing this energy within the agricultural sector (Sinha et al., 2021). Agricultural waste management is a critical issue in India, given the country’s vast agricultural sector and the substantial amount of waste it generates. Effective management of agri-waste not only mitigates environmental pollution but also contributes to sustainable agricultural practices and economic development through resource recovery and energy production (Gupta et al., 1998). The Indian government, recognizing the significance of this challenge, has developed a comprehensive policy framework and regulatory mechanisms to address agri-waste management. These policies aim to promote the efficient utilization of agricultural residues, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and enhance soil health through the recycling of organic waste. The current chapter explores various India’s policy framework and regulatory landscape in agri-waste management, highlighting the strategies, challenges, and opportunities within this crucial sector.

Additionally, the chapter covers important aspects such as importing data into R and setting the working directory.

Completely Randomized Design is a type of experimental design commonly used in statistical analysis and research. It is applied under specific conditions:

• Homogeneous units: CRD is suitable when the experimental units are consistent and uniform across the study area.

• Adherence to experimental design principles: This design conforms to two principal aspects of experimental design i.e. Randomization and Replication.

• Flexibility in replication: It allows for both equal and unequal replication of treatments within the experimental setup.

• Suitable for controlled environments: CRD is particularly effective for experiments conducted in greenhouses or laboratories, where conditions can be tightly regulated

Split Plot Design

The split-plot design is a statistical approach widely used in experiments where specific conditions apply:

• Hierarchical arrangement of treatments: This design is ideal for experiments involving two levels of experimental units, typically “whole plots” and “subplots.” The main treatments are applied to the whole plots, while the sub-treatments are applied within these to the subplots.

• Adherence to experimental design principles: The split-plot design follows the principles of randomization, replication, and local control, but with a hierarchical twist. The main treatments are randomized across the whole plots, and the sub-treatments are randomized within these main plots. • Resource management in unequal experimental conditions: This design is particularly useful when some factors require larger experimental units or when changing levels of one factor is more resource-intensive than changing levels of another factor.

Present Article explains types of domestic violence and Government support system against Gender based Violence.

Violence againstWomen [VAW]is globally pervasive.It existsin every country, cutting across boundaries of culture, class, caste, education, income, ethnicity and age. These trends are also reflected in the status of women in India. Census data shows that while the sex ratio has risen since the last decade, it is still low at 933, the juvenile sex ratio in India hasreached an all time low of 927. Census data 2001, official statistics from the National Crimes Record Bureau [NCRB] reveals a trend of rising crimes Record Bureau [NCRB] reveals a trend of rising crimes against women. Cultural practices in India such as dowry, child marriage, sati, the Devadasi tradition and ill treatment of widows enhance girls and women’s vulnerability to the experience of violence. Gender differential treatment related to nutrition, health care, education, mobility and other life opportunities places girls and women at a higher risk of gender violation.

3.1 Introduction

Government of India has made significant impact in empowering girl child through initiation of various schemes viz; Beti Bachao Beti Padhao, Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana etc. After initiation of such types of programme for girls, Child Sex Ratio was increased during 2021-22 i.e; 929 females per 1,000 males. Recently Government of India has initiated new innovation in Beti Bachao Beti Padhao programme. Present Paper aim is to discuss the new innovations during 2017 to 2022 under this scheme.

In India under the leadership of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi foresee rural India as ability laden with great prospective to speed of Sustainable Development Goal. Looking at splurge of schemes targeting girl child like Beti Bachao Beti Padhao, Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana, Ladli Yojana and several other schemes empowerment of girl child seems to be heart of a plan to attain dream of Aatma Nirbhar Bharat.

7.1 Introduction

Artificial intelligence (AI) is the imitation of human intellect in machines designed to emulate human activities and cognitive functions. These machines are designed to accomplish tasks that normally require human intellect, such as learning, problem solving, perception, and decision-making (Zhang et al., 2022). Horticultural crops, including fruits, vegetables, nuts, and ornamental plants, are of paramount importance in global agriculture, as they contribute significantly to food security, economic prosperity, and environmental sustainability. Nevertheless, the cultivation of these crops poses numerous challenges for growers, such as fluctuating market demand, insufficient resources, unpredictable climate conditions, and the constant threat of pests and diseases (Nowak & Grant, 2018). In recent years, the agricultural sector has experienced a significant shift owing to advancements in Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies (Liakos et al., 2018). AI has emerged as a powerful tool for the cultivation of horticultural crops, providing solutions for boosting productivity, sustainability, and efficiency (Shrivastava & Kumar, 2021). By utilizing AI, horticulturists can overcome the traditional challenges associated with crop management, resource allocation, and environmental sustainability, paving the way for a more resilient and productive agricultural sector (Garg et al., 2019). The integration of AI into horticultural crop production encompasses a diverse range of applications, including precision agriculture, crop monitoring and management, predictive analytics, automated harvesting, and genetic improvement (Golhani et al., 2018). These applications leverage machine learning algorithms, remote sensing technologies, and data analytics to analyze vast amounts of agricultural data ranging from soil composition and weather patterns to crop health and market trends (Araus& Cairns, 2014). Through intelligent data-driven insights, AI enables farmers to make informed decisions in real-time, optimize resource utilization, minimize waste, and maximize yields (Kamilaris et al., 2017). This technological convergence offers promising prospects for food production, enabling stakeholders to explore new avenues for growth, resilience, and sustainability in horticultural crop cultivation (Mohanty et al., 2016).

It involves all the steps starting from the extraction till sowing that makes the seed a high quality product for distribution among the farmers for a profitable crop. It reduces the spoilage during storage, increase the shelf life of the seeds, guarantees good germination and field stand thereby reduces the risk of losing the crop at early stages.

Seed Extraction

The seed extraction methods vary with the stage at which the matured fruits are harvested for seed extraction. Some of the vegetable crops are harvested at well ripe stage while some others are harvested at mature dry stage. Proper extraction should be selected taking into consideration the easiness of seed extraction from the fleshy pulp, relatively more seed recovery and less damage to the quality of seeds. There are different methods of seed extraction includes manual method, fermentation method, chemical method and mechanical method.

Manual Method

The manual method of seed extraction varies depending on the harvested fruit type. There are two types of seed extraction in vegetable crops viz., dry extraction and wet extraction.

1. Dry extraction Method

Dry extraction method is following in vegetables where mature dry fruits or mature dried pods are harvested for seed extraction. The harvested dried fruits are kept in sun for 2-3 days. The dried fruits are split open and the seeds are extracted by beating with pliable bamboo stick or by beating against a hard surface. Heavy beating should be avoided to reduce mechanical injury to the seed. Excessive mechanical injury may result in lowering of seed viability. The extracted seeds are dried in the sun between 8.00-11.00 am and 2.00-5.00 pm to reduce the moisture content to a safe level. This is followed in crops like chilli, okra, sponge gourd, ridge gourd, french bean, lablab bean, cow pea, cluster bean etc.

Agriculture has been undoubtedly the major source of livelihood in the developing nations like India. Livelihood is defined as adequate stock and f low of food and cash with an individual or a family to meet its basic needs (Girish et al., 2020). It encompasses the capabilities, assets (stores, resources, claims and access) and activities required for a means of living (Chambers and Conway, 1992). Livelihoods are considered secure when households have secure ownership or access to resources and income earning activities, including reserves and assets, to offset risks, ease shocks and meet contingencies (Chambers, 1989). The livelihood security is a complex concept that is location specific, subjective and dynamic (Hogger and Ruedi, 2004). It comprises of many indicators like food, educational, financial, health, culturaland social securities. Constraints like practices of traditional methods of cultivation, lack of access to modern technology, low productivity of crops, in-adequate capital formation and low investment, widespread illiteracy among farmers, etc., have become a major threat to the educational, food, economic and social securities, thus ultimately affecting the livelihood status of farming households in the country (Hatai and Sen, 2008). Since, a large fraction of farmers in the country lives in the rural areas, they have no proper knowledge regarding the usage of modern farming techniques. Often their low level of education and lack of communication has resulted into a lack of general awareness regarding the modern research and inventions on agriculture (Makal et al., 2017). In such scenario, farmers’ trainings play important role which helps the farmers in understanding the application of latest agricultural technologies in daily farming activities. It improves the knowledge of the trainees about the improved farm practices (Srinivas and Sailaja, 2013). The major players providing these extension services in public sector are Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs), State Agricultural Universities (SAUs) and ICT-led extension interventions by Department of Agriculture, Cooperation and Farmers Welfare (DAC&FW), Government of India. Many state universities through their KVKs, have been imparting need-based trainings to the farmers in their routine activities as well as sponsored by various departments/agencies. In last few decades, KVKs have increasingly become associated with grass root development (Saha, 2013).

Introduction

India is the largest producer, consumer and exporter of turmeric in the world. Indian turmeric is considered to be the best in the world market because of its high curcumin content. India accounts for about 80 per cent of world turmeric production and 60 per cent of world exports. Major turmeric exporting countries are India, Thailand, Taiwan, and several other Southeast Asian, Central and Latin American countries. The major turmeric importing countries include Japan, Sri Lanka, Iran, UAE, US, UK and Ethiopia.

Turmeric is native of India and china. The word turmeric is derived from the French word ‘Terre-merite’ meaning merit of the earth. Its botanical name is Curcuma longa L. and belongs to family Zingeberaceae, it is also known as ‘Indian Saffron’ is an herbaceous perennial plant growing up to the height of 60 – 90 cm with short stem. The plant is propagated from rhizomes. The leaves are long, broad lanceolate and bright green. The flowers are pale yellow and born on dense spikes. The pseudo stem are shorter than leaves. The rhizomes were ready for harvesting about 7 to 9 months after planting.

India is popularly known as the “Spiced Bowl of the World” as a wide variety of spices with premium quality grown in a country since ancient times. Indian turmeric is considered to be the best in the world due to presence of high curcumine content. Turmeric contains up to 5.00 per cent essential oil and up to 5.00 per cent curcumine, a polyphenol.

India is known to possess a significant demographic dividend due to its large and growing population where the female population is estimated to be 586.5 million or above currently. This population is characterized by vast regional and cultural differences that create difference in terms of region and culture due to which any kind of generalization is not possible. Women play a crucial role in the growth of the economy and over the years, they had made a substantial impact and achieved status across different sectors both within the country and overseas. Women is a part of workforce but still there is a large population of women both in rural and urban areas that has dreams, but lack the opportunities to realize those dreams and take up their roles other than the household ones. In this regard, it is essential for to promote skill development and women empowerment. In order to upgrade employability and other skills among women, there is need to reduce the unemployment, demographic dividend, cultural and regional barriers and bridge the gap between talent and industry by various innovative methods.

Proactive involvement of society is essential to attain the sustainable development and bring the desired change in the society. Women in economically disadvantaged areas lack opportunities for employment and for self-employment due to various causes and sometimes women in need are on the look-out for affordable vocational courses that is not only of interest to them but also enables them to enhance their employability. Women from these areas can be equipped with the skills they need to increase their employability so that they can access meaningful and sustainable employment, and self employment through entrepreneurship. UNICEF is also assisting women to build stronger links with the private sectors so that they have sustainable market access for their artisanal goods including those who are running home based business.

Interpersonal communication verbally non-verbally symbolic, disclosive, transitional, and multifunctional and that it can be either intentional or unintentional.

Patton and Giffin (1974) suggest that interpersonal communication is really no different from other forms of communication with the exception that it occurs only a face to face setting.

Stewart and Angelo (1975) suggest that communication becomes interpersonal when people are comfortable in sharing rather than prediction or influencing.

The Johari Window Concept of Interpersonal Communication (Luft, 1963-1970)

Interpersonal communication is the means by which we expand our Quadrant I. As Luft suggest, some people may get along fine with other people without in sight or awareness but such lack of awareness inhibits our communication effectiveness and impede our personal growth.

Characteristics of Interpersonal Communication

i. In interpersonal communication, both the generator and attributor of meaning must be present.

ii. In case of interpersonal communication, the face to face interaction between people who are consistently aware of each other.

iii. Each person in interpersonal communication assumes roles as both sender and receiver of message. iv. Interpersonal communication cannot transport without the presence and awareness of parties involved.

Mahatma Gandhi once said “India lives in its villages” and looking at the present scenario from the social, economical and political perspectives this statement seems valid even today. According to the World Bank collection of development indicators,around 65.33 percent of total population of India was reported to be Rural population in year 2019. Rural population refers to people living in rural areas as defined by National Statistical offices. Since more than half of the total population of India resides in rural areas Rural Development which is concerned with economic growth and social justice, improvement in the living standard of the rural people by providing adequate and quality social services and minimum basic needs becomes essential.

Superficially, rural development seems to be a simple task but, in reality, it is not. Rural development is based on sustainable development with available resources. Post- Independence era has seen many rural development programmes through different five-year plans. Alleviating poverty, employment generation, more opportunities for generating income, and infrastructure facilities are emphasized through the policies and programmes of the government. Along with this, the panchayat raj institutions have also been initiated by the government to strengthen the democracy at grass roots level. But in India, the scope of development is not narrow but very wide, as it includes not just the economic development but the growth on social front, quality of life, empowerment, women and child development, education and awareness of its citizens. The task of development is so huge and complicated that just implementing government plans is not sufficient to fix the problem. To achieve this, a holistic vision and collaborative efforts was needed which involves various departments, agencies and even NGOs. Owing to such a great need, the number of NGOs in India is increasing rapidly and, large number of NGOs are working for improving the livelihood of rural people.

1. Introduction

Micronutrients are essential nutrients required in small quantities but play a crucial role in human health and productivity. Key micronutrients include iodine, iron, zinc, and vitamins A, B6, and B12 (Godswill et al., 2020). Zinc deficiency, a common micronutrient shortfall, is prevalent not only in developed countries but particularly in impoverished nations. It can affect individuals of all ages, with young children and breastfeeding women being the most vulnerable. Addressing zinc insufficiency through zinc supplementation or diets rich in animal protein sources has shown promising results in promoting growth and reversing hypogonadism. Subsequent research has revealed that inadequate zinc consumption in the diet is the primary cause of this hypogonadism syndrome. Since the identification of zinc deficiency as a health concern in 1961, there has been a noticeable increase in interest in the biochemical and clinical aspects of zinc nutrition (King and Cousins, 2006). In this paper, we provide a comprehensive review of the physiological functions of zinc, zinc bioavailability (including inhibitors and enhancers), the human requirement for zinc, factors affecting zinc absorption, consequences and causes of zinc deficiency, evaluation of zinc status, and prevention strategies for zinc deficiency, focusing on the use of zinc-fortified foods.

Hunger and all forms of malnutrition continue to cause widespread suffering throughout the world. Malnutrition in children commonly leads to poor growth and poor physical and mental development, increased morbidity and, all too often, death. Among adults, malnutrition leads to lethargy, frequent illness and poor health, reduced physical capacity to do work, poor pregnancy outcomes among women, decreased cognitive function and a loss of learning potential and productivity. Widespread hunger and malnutrition also serve as severe impediments to social and economic development at both community and national levels. After years of steady progress, recent setbacks in the fight against hunger and malnutrition arising from the combined effects of high food prices and the global economic downturn coupled with the continuing problems of underdevelopment, civil strife, inadequate food supplies, social discrimination and environmental stress, jeopardize the earlier hopes for achieving the poverty, hunger and nutrition-related Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

According to FAO, there were 105 million more hungry people in 2009 than in the previous year and the number of malnourished people now stands at 1.02 billion. In the worst-affected countries, individual productivity losses due to malnutrition are equivalent to 10% of lifetime earnings, resulting in gross domestic product (GDP) losses of up to 3%. Around the world close to 10 million children die before their fifth birthday every year, over one-third of which are associated with under nutrition. One in three developing-country children under the age of five - 178 million children – are stunted due to chronic under nutrition and poor health, and some 148 million children are underweight. Micronutrient deficiencies or “hidden hunger” affects around 2 billion people worldwide or about one third of the world’s population. These vitamin and mineral deficiencies, especially of iron, iodine, zinc and vitamin A, lead to poor physical growth and development, lowered mental capacities, reduced productivity, impaired immune systems, blindness and death - all of which are preventable.

Food and nutrition security is the basic requirement of human development. Among the ten global burden of diseases, six are connected with diet related factors. Food and nutrition security is also closely related to other factors like socio economic status, geography and demography. Asia, Latin America and Africa hosts world’s most of the undernourished population. Among these regions South Asia is considered as one of the hotspots of malnutrition, in which India is the major contributor. Fifty seven percent of population cannot afford healthy diet in South Asia.

Over the centuries of remarkable economic growth in India concomitant reduction in under nutrition has not been witnessed and this dilemma is called Indian enigma (Gillespie et al 2012; Sengupta 2019). In India among the different socio economic categories, undernutrition has highly been manifested among SC and STs (Gillespie et al 2012; NNMB 2009).The reasons of food and nutrition insecurity are directly linked to remoteness, dire poverty and dysfunctional food security programmes (Khera 2011; UNICEF 2014). Poor and landless among them are mostly falling prey to chronic food insecurity. Coupled with reduction in locally available dietary inputs, rising food expenditure also compel poor to cut back the quantity and resort to low priced calorie dense food (Smyth & Sweetman; 2010). Therefore, poor people’s diet assume to fraught with starch, which leads to nutritional imbalances and resulting in to various lifestyle diseases like diabetics among them. This situation necessitates the need of local, sustainable household food production through home nutrition gardens. Many studies testify the impact of household level food crop cultivation in addressing malnutrition. Kuhnlein & Raceveur 1996; Pimbert 2009; Vira et al 2015 argues inadequate diets are associated with the “delocalization of food supply” and disruption in existed food systems. Therefore, in general literatures on agriculture and nutrition elicits the positive correlation between cultivating food crops and nutrition security (Gillespie et al 2012; Hossain et al 2016; Viswanathan et al 2015). In this context, home nutrition garden programmeassumes greater significance in countering malnutrition among Paniyan community in Western Ghats region of Wayanad district of Kerala.

After so many decades, the new education policy comes in its new form in 21st century. This policy seeks to offer everyone access to an equal, equitable, and fair education. The NEP 2020 represents a significant advancement in the field of education in India, with an emphasis on primary through higher education. It is based on the idea that education must foster the development of not only higher-order cognitive abilities-such as critical thinking and problem-solving skills-but also social, ethical, and emotional capacities and dispositions. These higher-order cognitive abilities include both the foundational abilities of literacy and numeracy and higher-order cognitive abilities. It includes- recognizing, identifying, and fostering each student’s individual abilities by educating parents and teachers to support a student’s overall growth in both academic and extracurricular areas, by the 3rd grade, all children will possess fundamental skills in literacy and numeracy, it will provide students multidisciplinary and holistic education to ensure the coherence and integrity of all knowledge. The policy manifested 22 guiding concept, some of them are conceptual comprehensive, flexibility and holistic development. These ideas will serve as the foundation for the whole Indian education system (Shamsu, 2021). The New Education Policy 2020 already incorporates vocational training for students’ holistic development, A study demonstrates a positive relationship between vocational choice of the subject and variables of personality, traits, parents’ involvement, achievements, motivation, and occupation information, (Kaur,1992)but including entrepreneurship in this policy would expose our students to more opportunities because entrepreneurship is the process of taking a risk to launch a new business with the intention of making a profit.

Introduction

Extension is a form of education, and extension services provide information, advice, and education for rural development in many countries. It was used for sharing ideas, beliefs, knowledge, and information with rural people in an informal way. In the mid-nineteenth century, extension services were institutionalized, and public funding was spent for organized extension activity in rural areas.

Extension Education

The word ‘extension’ is derived from two Latin roots, namely ‘ex’ meaning ‘out’ and ‘tensio’ meaning ‘stretching.’ Hence, extension means stretching out Figure 1.1.

Extension does not have a universally recognized definition. According to Webster, education is a process of teaching to develop the knowledge, skills, and character of students. Sociologist Rodney Stark declares that “Education is the cheapest, most rapid and most reliable path to economic advancement under present conditions.” Education is a lifelong process, and it is necessary to transfer experience and knowledge to the next generation for political and socio-economic development.

University extension started at Cambridge University, London University, and Oxford University before the nineteenth century. The success of extension in Britain led to the initiation of extension education in the United States later. In India, university extension was introduced after the establishment of State Agricultural Universities in a similar pattern to Land Grant Colleges in the United States.

Extension as a form of education facilitates the learning or acquisition of knowledge, skills, values, and habits. As an education, it can be informal, formal or non- formal. It can also be categorized as child education, adult education, technical education, health education, social science and humanities, etc.

Formal education: It is an institutionalized, chronologically graded, and well- structured system of education that starts from schooling to higher education. Formal education is usually given in structured classrooms in schools and colleges with a fixed syllabus, course curriculum, and certificates awarded after examination. In formal education, only qualified teachers impart education to the students.

Introduction

The goals and ideas of organic farming and regenerative agriculture are quite similar. Organic farming is a method of cultivating crops that prioritizes ecological sustainability by eschewing the use of artificial chemicals and genetically modified organisms in favor of more traditional practices. Producing residue- free food while also improving soil health, biodiversity, and ecological balance is the primary goal of this method. To restore and improve the health of the soil, ecosystems, and communities involved in agricultural systems, regenerative agriculture goes above and beyond organic farming. The ultimate goal is the development of resilient and sustainable agricultural systems that can deal with the effects of climate change.

Regenerative agriculture and organic farming share a common set of values, including an emphasis on the importance of good soils to successful and sustainable farming. Crop rotation, cover crops, and composting are some of the methods advocated by these people to improve soil fertility, structure, and biological activity. Preservation and promotion of a wide variety of plant and animal life on and around farms is an aim of both organic and regenerative farming practices. Pest and disease management, pollination, and ecosystem stability are all bolstered by biodiversity. Both methods encourage using less or no man- made chemicals, such as those found in pesticides, herbicides, and fertilizers. Organic matter, compost, and biological pest management are just some of the natural inputs that these farmers rely on. Water, energy, and material resource conservation are fundamental to both organic farming and regenerative agriculture. To lessen agriculture’s impact on the environment, they advocate for methods including water management, efficient irrigation systems, and the use of renewable energy. Strong relationships and collaborations between farmers, customers, and local communities are prioritized by these methods. All along the agricultural supply chain, they are committed to fair trade, social equity, and transparency. Farmers may grow healthy, resilient, and sustainable farming systems by applying the holistic concepts of regenerative agriculture to conventional organic farming practices. In addition to strengthening the bond between agriculture and its natural surroundings, these methods also improve soil quality, lessen negative effects on the environment, increase biodiversity, and result in more nutritionally dense food.

Introduction

The growing interest in agricultural production over the past few decades has resulted in more farming systems that rely on chemical pesticides or chemical fertilizers, which has seriously harmed the soil, water, air, and climate while paying little attention to quality or concern for the agricultural system’s negative effects on ecosystems. But as time went on, scientific research began to focus on sustainable agriculture, organic farming, clean agriculture, and other ideas that eventually evolved into agricultural systems that maintain the balance in all areas of the agricultural and production process, as well as consumer and environmental concerns. These agricultural approaches have attracted the attention of numerous farmers, and many large farms are now interested in organic farming in the context of sustainable agriculture. The idea of sustainable agriculture is simply the production of food, fiber, other plant products, or even animal products using agricultural techniques that protect the environment, public health, and human societies from the detrimental effects arising from carrying out that process using the standard format as well as technology that also takes into account animal welfare, such that this type of agriculture will enable us to produce healthy foods without compromise (Bahlai et al., 2010; Muller et al., 2017, and Palmgren et al., 2015).

The Future of Sustainable Agriculture

The adoption of sustainable agriculture was made to raise awareness of their significance and to support the governments of plantations and businesses that operate within the parameters of sustainability, in particular organic agriculture, which is clean and recently devoted a lot of studies and research as well as major scientific conferences on sustainable agriculture, as were a lot of major exhibitions for organic goods and food made from organic ingredients around the world. Specifically, the potential role that organic agriculture could play in reducing the adverse effects of climate change, reducing deforestation rates, maintaining biological risk, and also arranging the steady increase in the world’s population, attracted attention to the level of international policy.

Introduction

According to research released not too long ago by the United Nations, the population of the entire planet is expected to reach around 8 billion by the end of the year 2022. As a consequence, the future demand for the production and distribution of food must be satisfied to provide sustenance for the expanding population of the world and to alleviate human suffering. However, in countries like India, food is wasted at an alarmingly high rate every year because there are insufficient facilities for cooling and storing food once it has been harvested. The majority of the losses began on the farm level since the fresh produce, which requires fast refrigeration after harvest in large quantities, was unable to be given, which led to the spoilage of the food. It is especially vital to shorten the amount of time between harvesting and first cooling to slow down the rate at which newly harvested fruits and vegetables breathe out carbon dioxide and exhale it. When keeping fresh fruits and vegetables, the two most important controlling parameters are temperature and relative humidity. These two factors work together to minimize the amount of water that is lost and to keep the product quality from deteriorating. Following their preferred ranges of temperature and relative humidity, fruits and vegetables can be divided into the following categories: (Table 15.1). For the objectives of on-farm cooling, the majority of fresh fruits and vegetables that are classified as belonging to groups 1 and 2 need to be concentrated, which necessitates maintaining an ideal temperature of less than 10°C and a relative humidity of more than 90%.

For proper and efficient experiment to be conducted, experimenters need so many chemicals to deal with. This includes different acids, base, salt, different kind of indicators and so on. Some of these chemicals are safe for health, but some of them are dangerous to health when come in close proximity to our body while some of the chemicals cause health issues on inhaling. These may cause improper functioning of some of our physiological activities. Acids and bases are very dangerous for our tissues when come in our contact. These may cause serious respiratory problem in addition to injuries on coming to our contact. Some chemicals are exploratory yet they may cause even death of the person working with them in laboratory. Therefore, mere use of the chemicals in laboratory is not only the objective of the experimenter. The person working in laboratory should also be concerned about the proper use and handing of the chemical while working with it. Thus, every researcher of an institution who has to work with chemicals in a laboratory should be made aware about the chemicals to be used in the laboratory and the consequences if any mishandling of a laboratory chemical occurs. Not only these, suitable precautionary measures should also be known to the researcher along with ensuring the availability of the required safety equipment/installations. Hence, a proper understanding of the ways of handling of chemicals in a laboratory is of prime importance for the personals like you who are working or have to work in laboratory.

Safe Handling of Chemicals in Laboratory

Safe use/handling of chemicals in laboratory include minimized exposure to chemicals, maintaining safety data sheets, proper labelling, storage, segregation, and transport of chemicals for personal hygiene.

Since mouth pipetting of liquid reagents in a laboratory is not advisable, different tools are needed for safe, easier, and precise dispensing of liquid reagents. This chapter is devoted to make you aware of the tools like vacupette and micropipette which can be used for the handling of liquid reagents in a safe and precise way.

Vacupette

Glass pipettes have been traditionally used by sucking liquid solvent/solution directly using mouth. For safety reasons, mouth pipetting is no longer permitted in a laboratory. Hence, to fill a pipette vacupette is used by placing it on the top of glass or plastic pipette. It acts as a device to create vacuum for filling reagent in the pipette as well as for releasing the reagent with mechanical regulation on the flow out of the liquid. Vacupette can be of different types.

1. Rubber Bulb Vacupette

Rubber bulb vacupette is often used to transfer (pump up and discharge) liquid using a pipette when a larger quantity of chemicals is to be transferred. Small/tiny rubber bulb is attached to glass/plastic pipette for drawing little amount of reagents. Small vacupette is used to precisely discharge smaller volume/ drops.

Handling of Vacupette

• Insert the top of a pipette in the bottom of the rubber bulb vacupette (Figure 6.1).

• Remove air from the pipette by squeezing valve “A” at the top of the vacupette while simultaneously squeezing the rubber bulb. The amount of air released depends on the size of the rubber bulb.

In a research laboratory, we frequently need weigh chemicals and prepare different solutions of varying strength, as per the requirements. Accuracy in weighing and preparation of solution, with respect to weight/volume and strength, determines the success of experiment. In turn, the accuracy depends on weighing of solid chemical and/or measuring the volume of liquid chemical/making up the volume. In this Chapter, weighing of chemicals using appropriate weighing balance, preparation of solutions of different strength, their dilution, and precautions while preparing will be discuss in brief.

Weighing of Chemical

The primary method to determine the amount of chemicals to be used is weighing the chemical by using a balance.

In general, there are two types of balances to weigh chemicals in a laboratory:

1. Standard laboratory balance

2. Analytical balance

Standard Laboratory Balance

Generally, a standard laboratory balance is used for weighing a chemical when an error of ±0.02 g is acceptable. It is also used for pre-weighing, where approximate mass needs to be determined. Precise mass of the chemical is then determined using an analytical balance. Following are the steps in using a weighing balance in a laboratory.

Introduction

Seed is a living entity (mature ovule) consisting of a tiny plant in embryonic stage along with the stored food protected by an outer layer known as seed coat. Seed is an important biological input in agriculture, which is economically important for successful crop husbandry. Cotyledons serve as the source of nutrients (proteins, carbohydrates, and oils) that not only nurture the plant at the early developmental (seedling) stages of plant but also the vegetarian (heterotroph) organisms. Being one of the important inputs in agriculture, viability of seed needs to be assessed to know the germination percentage of seeds used to raise a crop. Since viability of seeds may deteriorate on storage depending on the storage conditions. Therefore, often it becomes important to test viability/germinability and vigour of seeds before being used for raising a crop or conducting an experiment. In this chapter, we briefly discuss about the different methods which can be used for testing the viability of seeds.

Seed Viability

Seed viability can be defined as the capability of the seed to germinate and produce a normal seedling within a specified period. In other words, seed viability indicates how many seeds in a lot are alive and could develop into plants under appropriate field conditions. It is very important that most of the stored seeds are capable of germinating when sown in a field. They must possess higher viability at the beginning of storage and maintain it over the storage. A seed with high initial viability survives longer in storage; however, the viability deteriorates slowly at first and then rapidly as the storage prolongs. It is important to know the duration of storage after which a considerable decline in viability occurs under given storage conditions so that to take necessary action to revive the seeds. Excessive deterioration in vianility of seeds may lead to loss of the seed/material/ germplasm.

Today, antimicrobial resistance (AMR) has become a global issue, contributing to rise in mortality and cost of treatment. Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is the resistance of a microorganism against an antimicrobial agent to which it was originally sensitive (WHO, 2013). Dispersion of antibiotics is done at large scale, in India even sometimes without any proper prescription. Animal Husbandry is not untouched and antibiotics are used to a great extent, which needs enforcement of strict government rules and regulations for their use in f ield conditions (PHFI, 2011).

Extended-spectrum β-lactamases (ESBLs) are enzymes that hydrolyse most of the β-lactam antibiotics and thus mediate resistance to penicillins, 3rd and 4th generation cephalosporins (Saravanan et al., 2018). Beta-lactamase inhibitors, inhibit these ESBLs such as clavulanic acid, sulbactam and tazobactam (Trott, 2013). The genes encoding for these enzymes are commonly found both on the chromosomes and plasmids among Enterobacteriaceae family (Kotsoana et al., 2019).

Among Enterobacteriacae, E. coli and Klebsiella species are main environmental pathogens associated with various illnesses such as acute bovine mastitis (Koovapra, 2015), pathogenic E. coli with diarrhoea and extra intestinal infections in humans and animals (Levine et al., 1987), K. pneumoniae with respiratory and urinary tract as well as bloodstream infections (Daehre et al., 2018). Resistance to extended-spectrum β-lactams occurs mainly in members of Enterobacteriaceae family through plasmids encoded ESBL genes. (Sharma et al., 2010).

Antibiotics, often referred to as “magic bullets” in the battle against bacteria, stand out as one of the most remarkable medical breakthroughs of the 20th century. Their advent revolutionized the therapeutic landscape, consistently saving millions of lives from bacterial infections (WHO, 2020). Undoubtedly, antibiotics are a blessing to humanity, not merely for their medicinal applications but also for their diverse uses. They have long been employed in various contexts, including animal husbandry and production, serving as preventive measures in numerous underdeveloped and developing nations for decades (Majumder et al., 2020). A range of antimicrobial agents, including antibiotics, antifungals, antivirals, disinfectants, and food preservatives, function to either inhibit microbial growth or eradicate them altogether. Among these, antibiotics, specifically tailored to combat bacterial infections, are the most widely used class of antimicrobials. With their increasing and often improper use, microorganisms have developed antimicrobial resistance (AMR) (Murray et al., 2022).

Antimicrobial resistance is an inevitable evolutionary process observed in all microorganisms, and is driven by genetic mutations aimed at resisting the lethal pressures of selection. Bacteria, adapt to environmental selection pressures by developing resistance to antibacterial drugs, thereby diminishing the efficacy of these treatments (Murray et al., 2022). The widespread use of antibiotics, particularly in developing nations, further flares up the process, leading to significant repercussions such as increased rates of morbidity and mortality (WHO, 2020). The incidence and prevalence of antimicrobial resistant bacterial infections have reached alarming levels in the 21st century, posing a substantial threat to global public health akin to a silent pandemic. Antibiotic resistance knows no borders and can impact individuals of any age or gender, regardless of their location. In its present state, antimicrobial resistance (AMR) stands as one of the foremost threats, not only to global health but also to food security (Murray et al., 2022).

Introduction

In the middle of the 1900s, the world experienced a big increase in people, leading to a greater need for food. This demand for more food pushed for a farming revolution called the “green revolution.” This revolution used chemicals to help grow more crops and fight plant diseases. But using lots of these chemicals caused problems for the environment and people’s health. Even with all these chemicals, a large amount of food (up to 25% of what’s grown) is still lost to diseases each year. By 2050, we might need to double how much food we make. To do this without harming the environment or health, we’re looking for new ways. Some ideas include making plants that are genetically modified, creating plant varieties that resist pests naturally, and using helpful microorganisms like certain bacteria and fungi. These helpful organisms can be used in different ways, like making soil healthier or protecting plants.

The microorganisms colonizing plant roots generally include bacteria, algae, fungi, protozoa and actinomycetes. Enhancement of plant growth and development by application of these microbial populations is well evident. Among different microbial populations present in the rhizosphere, bacteria are the most abundant microorganisms. Various genera of bacteria, Pseudomonas, Enterobacter, Bacillus, Variovorax, Klebsiella, Burkholderia, Azospirillum, Serratia and Azotobacter, cause a pronounced effect on plant growth and are termed as plant growth promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR). PGPR play a significant role in enhancing plant growth and development both under non stress and stress conditions by a number of direct and indirect mechanisms. Microbes exert key functions in ecosystems being involved in nitrogen fixation, phosphorus solubilization, soil formation, and production of siderophores, plant growth regulators and organic acids as well as protection by enzymes like ACC-deaminase, chitinase and glucanase.

Introduction

Livestock sector has been an integral component of Indian agriculture since time immemorial due to its multifarious contributions to the society in the form of nutrient-rich food products, clothing, drought power, income and employment. India has huge population of livestock. Of the total livestock population of the world, India alone has about one-fifth cattle population. As per the 20th livestock census estimate, total livestock population in the year 2019 was over 535 million. Among the livestock products, milk is the most important. India has a glorious history of outstanding achievement in transforming itself from milk deficit country to world’s biggest milk producer over the span of three decades. With over 300 million bovines and producing over 198 million tonnes of milk in 2019-20, the Indian dairy sector exhibits strong growth potential. Despite COVID-19 induced restrictions, which has thrown the smallholder milk producers from the frying pan to fire, the organized dairy sector showed positive growth rate of around 1% in the last f iscal– the lowest in a decade. Despite these proud boasts, poor productivity potential of Indian milch herd is a major cause of concern that may threat its numero one position in future.

The major causes of low milk productivity in India are both intrinsic (low genetic potential) and extrinsic (poor nutrition/feed management). Empirical studies in India have shown that enhancing quality and quantity of feed and fodder has greater impact than breed improvement on increasing milk productivity (Lalwani, 1989; Gaddi and Kunal, 1996; IAEA, 2006; Roy et al., 2020). The timely unavailability of nutritionally rich feed and fodder is a major hitch that impinges on the productivity growth of farm animals in the country. Nonetheless, with increase in agricultural production over the time, the animal feed availability has also improved, but its supply always falls short of the aggregate demand. At national level, the recent reported shortage in green fodder, dry fodder and concentrates is 11.24%, 23.4% and 28.9%, respectively (Roy et al. 2019), and the scenario is more unnerving in few Indian states where the fodder deficit is above 25% (Fig 1).

Product Development and Marketing

Several efforts are being made on the research front for development of novel products from fish which have enhanced shelf life, retain the freshness and nutrients and are safe to consume. During the course of product development, which are in many stages, studies are conducted prior to commercialisation to ensure the acceptance of a product.

In a business, understanding consumer behaviour plays an important role in success. To be in a business for a long time, it is essential to know what the consumer prefers and why. Consumers make the buying decisions based on a number of factors. The purpose behind studying the buying behaviour and consumer preference is to produce and market products which may better meet the needs of a consumer. The emerging fastfood culture among the young and affordable has brought focus on processed food and its demand in the domestic food market in India. Domestically, spending on food and food products constitutes the largest portion of the Indian consumer’s spending – more than a 31% share of wallet. Evaluation of consumer preferences before introducing a new product will help the marketer to refine the product for better reach.

Conjoint Analysis

Conjoint analysis is a popular technique used in marketing research to study the features a product that should possess to have a wide consumer reach. Conjoint analysis was initially conceptualised by Luce and Tukey (1964) and further developed by Green and Rao (1971) for marketing research. It employs a decompositional method to estimate the structure of consumer preferences and consumer utility values of different attributes of a product or service. It is a decompositional method that disaggregates the structure of consumer preferences into utility values. The relative importance of a product can also be estimated using this method.

Biometrical Genetics - Historical Background

It is a science built on the principles of Mendelian genetics and the way in which the genetic factors influence the statistical properties of traits in families and populations. The roots of biometrical genetics go back to Gregor Mendel, who first demonstrated the existence of the hereditary factors and to Francis Galton who first applied statistical methods to study biological inheritance. Galton introduced the concepts of regression and correlation for studying the continuous variation in humans, but was not aware of the principles of genetics discovered by Mendel. Galton, Karl Pearson and Walter Weldon together started the journal Biometrika in 1901, with the aim of promoting the statistical studies in biological phenomena. The differences of opinion persisted between the Biometricians and Mendelians in the early 20th Century. In 1918 Ronald A. Fisher published a landmark paper ‘The correlation between relatives on the supposition of Mendelian inheritance, in which he showed the two seemingly contradictory approaches could be reconciled in terms of a simple biometrical genetic model. Ronald A. Fisher’s paper laid the foundation for the discipline of Biometrical Genetics.

Foundation

a) Mendelian Inheritance

Mendel proposed three principles based on his work and now known as Mendel’s laws of inheritance

• Law of uniformity: if two homozygote parents of different alleles cross together, all offspring must have the same genotype

• Law of segregation: an individual receives with the equal probability one of the two genes from the genotype of the mother and similarly from that of the father.

• Law of independent assortment: the segregation of the genes for one trait is independent of the segregation of genes for other traits in the formation of reproductive cells

In association studies, the law of segregation is the basis for the transmission disequilibrium test (TDT). The possible violation of law of independent assortment forms the basis of the gene mapping technique, linkage analysis. These principles are used to check the quality of parent-offspring genetic data. Mendelian principles though developed for dichotomous traits, they can be applied to the inheritance of traits influenced by multiple genes and are fundamental to genetic analysis.

Introduction

Culture of aquatic organisms is a significant economic endeavor that benefits millions of people worldwide by generating employment opportunities and ensuring food security. One of the lucrative aquaculture ventures in many countries is the cultivation of freshwater pearls. Prior to the development of cultured pearl farming, pearls were harvested from the Gulf of Mannar, the region between India and Sri Lanka, the Bay of Bengal, the Egyptian coast (Red Sea), and the Persian Gulf (Saudi Arabian coast) (Matlins 2001; Strack 2008), which benefited the nation’s economy. However, the natural pearl fisheries have been depleted as a result of indiscriminate fishing, habitat destruction, and pollution. Realizing its economic significance, pearl farming has developed into a successful aquaculture activity to support the nation’s aqua-economy through innovation and standardization of farming techniques.

Pearls are cultured in both marine and freshwater environments, and they are particularly created in bivalves with an inner nacreous layer. Many countries like China, Japan, Australia, Indonesia, French Polynesia, Cook Islands, Philippines, India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Thailand, Malaysia and Mexico are major pearl producing countries through farming (Gervis and Sims 1992; Southgate 2007; Southgate et al. 2008 & Saurabh et al. 2021). In addition to the economic benefit like other bivalves these pearl producing mussels has positive environmental impact and also has several nutritional benefits. Freshwater bivalves including these pearl mussels are widely used in aquaculture for aquaculture-effluent treatment of aquaculture farms. The shells of bivalves are the source of two highly versatile chemical compounds, calcium carbonate or calcium oxide which is having wide industrial applications. The shells are used in cosmetics and traditional medicine, handicraft and jewelry. These economic and environmental benefits have catalyzed expansion of the bivalve aquaculture industry in various regions of world. During 2009 to 2018 the average freshwater pear cultured production was 1928 tonne while China continued to dominate world freshwater pearl culture (FAO, 2020). However, the freshwater pearl culture production has declined from 3321 tonne in 2009 to 703 tonne in 2018. This drastic decline may be due to overexploitation, habitat degradation, pollution, lack of proper management and many more and it has threatened long term sustainability of fisheries and this farming sector. It gives an alarming call for all fisheries managers and policy makers to formulate management measures to implement for the betterment of the sector. Though this farming technology has a great potential to increase the aqua economy of the country, growth should be sustainable.

Introduction

Aquaculture has emerged as a viable business model having high growth potential for the entrepreneurs and start-ups in India. The rate of adoption of the aqua-business models for new age entrepreneurs has been very high in recent times. Some of the viable business models that are technology based and scalable have been attractive to the entrepreneurs are in the indoor aquaculture system like RAS, Biofloc systems. It offers many advantages like low space requirements, easy monitoring, higher level of intensification, easy management, short supply chain to the urban markets etc. These indoor aquaculture system are broadly defined as peri-urban aquaculture system offering high growth potential to the entreprenuers in India. The chapter provides a broad outline of the opportunities and recent trends of entrepreneurial developments through peri-urban aquaculture.

Entrepreneurship is the risk taking ability and readiness to venture into a new economic enterprise, along with all its challenges in order to make profit. One of the examples of entrepreneurship is the starting of new businesses in any field with business potential. In other words, entrepreneurship is the creation or extraction of economic value (Diochon et al. 2011; Gaddefors et al. 2017; Alvarez, et al. 2001). It is also viewed as a change, generally entailing risk beyond what is normally encountered in starting a business, which may include other values than simply economic ones. A person gets the benefits as he invests in one or more businesses, bearing most of the risks and availing most of the rewards. According to Shane (2000), entrepreneurship comprises both “enterprising individuals” and “entrepreneurial opportunities”[4]. An entrepreneur is generally seen as an innovator, a source of innovative ideas, services, and business.

Diseases are among the greatest deterrents to the sustained production in aquaculture. White spot disease (WSD) in penaed shrimp and epizootic ulcerative syndrome (EUS) in fresh and brackish water fishes are the well known devastating diseases with serious impact in aquaculture. Aquaculture medicine which broadly encompasses prevention and management of diseases in cultured aquatic organisms becomes a vital requirement for a sustained industry.

The four K’s essential for scientific aquaculture health management are knowledge about the disease process, knowledge about the pathogen, knowledge about the host and the knowledge about the environment. Disease development process is often complicated and involves host-pathogen- environment interactions. Knowledge about the pathogen, attaching and entering the host, deriving nourishment, reproduction, transmission, overcoming host defence barriers, etc are very essential. Susceptibility of a host to a pathogen is important which depends on host species, age, size, immuno competence and stress response. Besides knowledge about how the temporal and spatial aspects of environment stress the host and favour the pathogen to cause disease is vital

Disease Development Process

There exist a delicate balance between the host, pathogen and the environment. When this delicate balance gets upset, disease can result. Aquaculture environments can stress the host, favour the pathogen and result in disease development. To appreciate the process of disease development understanding the pathogenicity mechanisms of the pathogens, disease resistance mechanism of the host and the role of the environment is essential. Furthermore, role of various pathogens, their adaptive modifications, the functional importance of the target tissue, interaction between pathogen and host at the target tissue level, pathogenicity mechanisms of pathogens, etc are necessary to gain insight into process of disease development. Only when a pathogen can establish on or in the host, proliferate, overcome the non-specific and/or specific defense barriers of the host, produce the pathogenic factors, cause cellular and tissue damage, produce significant pathological changes, impair the function of the target tissue cause clinical disease often with mortality. This process is very complicated which often get accelerated by stress and environmental factors. However, the sequence of disease development will to a large extent depend on the nature and load of the pathogen (parasite, bacteria, fungi, virus), its intensity per unit area or unit weight of the host, size of the host and environmental factors.

In the past several Non infectious diseases (NIDs) of fish and shellfish have been observed in natural waters. However, with expansion in fresh, brackish and marine aquaculture including aquarium keeping world wide there is a phenomenonal increase in incidences of NIDs and economic loss. Common Non infectious diseases (NIDs) in fish are 1.Gas bubble disease(GBD), 2. Body deformities(BD), 3.Nutritional diseases(ND) and 4. Disease due to harmful algal bloom(DHAB)

1. Gas Bubble Disease (GBD)

Gas bubble disease (GBD), is caused by supersaturation of gases in water. The gas involved is nitrogen in most cases and rarelycarbon dioxide and oxygen can cause GBD as these two gases are used by fish tissues and readily processed.Oxygen can cause gas-bubble disease at about 350 per cent air saturation, but nitrogen can cause the disease even below 118 per cent. GBD becomes prominent whenever there is a change in temperature, pressure and turbulance in aquatic environment, leading to disturbance in metabolism of f ishes. Bubbles of gas may form in the eyes, skin, gills, fins and within the internal organs where small bubbles may coalesce into larger bubbles.Fish absorb the excess gas, which forms bubbles in the small blood vessels, due to pressure changes inside their body. Gas bubble disease (GBD), is seen both in captive and wild fish. When bubbles affect internal organs, some fish may diesometimes without obvious clear clinical signswhile other fish may be chronically affected, and have a reduced appetite, activity and buoyancy. GBD can also cause secondary bacterial, viral or protozoan infections.All fish and shelfishspecies as well as amphibians and aquatic invertebrates are susceptible to GBD.Sensitivity of fish to GBD in terms of pathology and mortality varies with species and age.

Disease diagnosis refers to the various procedures and techniques used to identify the nature of disease and to precisely pinpoint the primary and secondary pathogens involved. Disease diagnosis is an integral part of health management. Proper diagnosis helps to adopt accurate therapy and avoids indiscriminate use of chemotherapeutics. Information on case history and clinical signs should be carefully used while examining samples for diagnosis. By following rational and scientific sampling protocols, one can hope to arrive at accurate diagnosis. Sampling methodology is key to the success of proper disease diagnosis. Dead fish/shrimp should never be used for any diagnostic purpose. Autolytic post-mortem changes, saprophytic invaders, spoilage organisms, etc. mask the actual etiological agents and can lead to false diagnosis.

The three commonly used conventional diagnostic approaches are fresh examination using microscope, microbiological methods and histopathology. With little facilities and infrastructure, fresh microscopical diagnostic approach can be done at the farm/hatchery site itself. Gross examinations along with simple skin and gill preparations examined under microscope can many a times give very good information about the disease and the etiology. All fresh preparations should be made from live or moribund fish and the preparations should be wet and moist. The fish meant for examination should be kept wet and not allowed to dry. Many of the commonly occurring external disease problems can be easily diagnosed by this method.

Systemic bacterial diseases need to be positively diagnosed by adopting the microbiological approach. Samples for bacterial isolations should be taken from kidney, blood, body cavity, etc. from live or moribund fish following strict aseptic conditions. In shrimp, it is ideal to use hemolymph for bacterial isolations. Dominant bacterial isolates are identified following standard procedures and their antibacterial sensitivity tested before recommending any antibacterial therapy. This method requires a minimum of 4-5 days.

Fish are Sentient Animals

There is strong increasing evidence that finfish, like other vertebrates are sentient animals. This means that fish are self-aware, they can feel pain and distress, they have long term and short-term memory and to some extent, they can experience emotions.

Fish are intelligent, sensitive creatures and like many other animals, they explore, travel, socialise, hunt and play. Some species care for their young and use tools as humans do. Fish are sentient animals capable of suffering and feeling pain. Most fish have highly developed senses with excellent taste, smell, hearing and colour vision. Until fairly recently, many people didn’t realise that fish were sentient or feel pain, and the mental abilities of fish were given limited attention by the scientific community. Now, recent discoveries open up a new world of understanding. Far more complex than we ever realised, f ish live rich social lives: communicating; hunting cooperatively; and, in some cases, developing cultural traits. Consensus arrived in the mid-2000s around science demonstrating high-level pain perception in fish, and examinations of fish behaviour are beginning to reveal a picture of fish as complex, social and emotional beings. Appreciation of these facts are not widespread in civil society, but identified in time for the principle of fish welfare to be recognised by legislation by the European Union.
