Vegetables have always been looked upon as an essential part of diet and are necessary for human health and well-being. Vegetables supply many kinds of nutrients, e.g., carbohydrates, proteins, minerals, vitamins, fibers, phytochemicals, etc. and also add flavour, colour and crispness to foodstuffs. For developing modern day vegetables, breeders have utilized an understanding of genetic principles and applied them for the improvement of these crops. They often make crosses (hybridization) between a crop plant and a related or wild species (a wide cross) enabling valuable genes to be used for genetic improvement of the crops. Over the last few decades, molecular breeding is supplementing plant breeder’s efforts for accelerated genetic enhancement bringing about a revolution in this area. This approach demands efficient procedures for the routine introduction of foreign DNA into plant genomes and utilizing them for the production of novel types of vegetable. In this chapter, attempts have been made to review most of the available molecular breeding techniques, which can routinely be employed in various aspects of vegetable improvement.

Cultivars are developed by selecting for desired traits or by removing undesirable traits that are controlled by genes (the blueprint for all characteristics in living organisms) from existing varieties or breeding lines. The plant species, varieties and clones are identified or selected by their physical features since olden times. However, these traits would change with respect to environmental and climatic conditions. The biochemical parameters like enzymes, proteins, alkaloids, etc. are also likely to change due to the stages of development of plant tissue. Successful selection strategies are dependent on the breeder’s ability to distinguish genetic effects from environmental effects on a visible or measurable trait. Therefore, the scientists resorted to use ‘genetic marker’, i.e., any stable and inheritable variation that can be measured or detected by a suitable method and can be used subsequently to detect the presence of a specific genotype or phenotype, which otherwise is very difficult to detect. Presently, the breeders and scientists all over the world are pursuing mostly DNA or molecular markers.

Introduction

Commercially laying of poultry birds carried out for a laying year or cycle after that as egg production decreases then they are usually culled when birds starts shedding of feathers. If we still keep these birds after allowing shedding and renewing of feathers birds take sufficient rest to builds up its body reserve of nutrients for next laying cycles. Their production regains 80-83% of the first laying cycle therefore recycling of laying can be carried out by shedding and renewing of feathers which is nothing but the “molting.”

Moments

In statistics, moments are measures of the shape and variability of a data set. They are used to describe the location and dispersion of the data. There are several types of moments that can be calculated, each providing different information about the data set.

Moments is a term which refers to a measure of force with respect to its tendency which provides rotation. The strength of the tendency depends upon the amount of force and distance from the point of origin where force is exerted.

So total moments of all the forces about origin, if total moment is divided by the total force, which is called moment actually arithmetic mean for frequency distribution.

Hence, arithmetic mean is called first moment about the origin

Economic growth tends to be positively correlated with certain financial factors. For instance, higher inflation, an increased money supply, and lower interest rates are often associated with stronger economic growth. Plus, people's expectations regarding future inflation can also impact economic growth. A reduction in available money can weaken the impact of monetary policy. To accurately assess the effectiveness of monetary policy, it's important to consider. Flexibility and limitations in economic supply and demand. The relationship between monetary policy and economic growth. Expectations of inflation It's also essential to account for potential drawbacks and unexpected effects of monetary policy. Additionally, monetary policy should consider the interaction between monetary and fiscal policies. In formulating domestic monetary policy, the global economic landscape holds significant sway. Factors such as the global economy, currency exchange rates, and international trade can profoundly influence a country's monetary policy framework. Moreover, in today's interconnected financial system, central banks must be cognizant of the broader implications their monetary actions may have on other economies, highlighting the need for a global perspective in monetary policy decision making.

Money has made rapid economic progress possible in this modern age. In the early stages, exchange took the form of barter The direct exchange of one good for another is known as barter. For instance, the potter received paddy from the farmer in exchange for cooking pots. Barter became more challenging as there were more items to trade. Silver and other precious metals were thus utilised as currency. Then the paper currencies were used as legal money, i.e., an instrument of exchange, by the governments.

Definition of Money

Anything that the general public readily accepts as payment for products, services, other assets, and the discharge of debt is referred to as money. Robertson defned money, “as anything that is acceptable in discharge of obligations”.

When the human civilization was not developed, people used to exchange those goods which they produced for those which others produced. Such an act of exchanging goods for goods is called barter. But as the years rolled by and when the social organization became more complex, barter system was found to be not practicable. The following are the main difficulties which were found in the barter system.
1. Double coincidence of wants
2. Lack of a standard unit of account
3. Impossibility of subdivision of goods
4. Lack of information
5. Production of large and very costly goods not feasible
The difficulties in barter system were replaced with the introduction of money. Money has been defined as the medium of exchange. According to Robertson money is defined as “Anything which is widely acceptable in discharge of obligations”. The different stages in the development of money are as follows.
1. Commodity Money: The earliest form of money consisted of goods like rice, wheat, cattle, skins, elephant tusks etc. These were accepted as they were all desired by all the people.
2. Metallic Money: As the civilization advanced, people found it difficult to carry on the exchange transaction with commodities, as they were found to be very inconvenient. Commodity money gave way for the metals to be used as money. These metals include gold, silver, copper, bronze, etc. From the beginning of their introduction, Government kept the right to issue coins and certify their weight and quality. Metals were converted into coins for this purpose.

Introduction

Water is one of the most precious gifts of nature to living beings and particularly to the mankind. On account of erratic distribution of rainfall both in time and space, the country is subjected to cycles of floods and droughts. With the increase in demand for water for various purposes and to mitigate the twin problems of floods and droughts faced by the country, a coordinated approach for optimum utilization and proper management of this precious resource is of prime importance. In addition, proper development and management of both irrigation and drainage systems are essential. This would require integrated management of surface water as well as gorund water. All the water related problems whether mitigating droughts or floods or better irrigation management practices, dictate for adoption of state of the art water management practices. Water management deals with the control, distribution and allocation of water flows and the treatment of rivers and catchments, consequently, solutions to many of the problems in water management require the knowledge and expertise from diverse sources.

Abstract

While harnessing the benefits of genetically modified (GM) crops, in terms of increased yield, better nutritional quality and resistance to biotic and abiotic stresses, it is important to undertake biosafety and risk assessment studies in a systematic manner to allay the concerns of their impact on the environment and especially on the genetic diversity. Since Bt cotton is the only commercialized GM crop in India, this paper reports on the monitoring of unintentional introgression of transgene(s)/ regulatory elements of four commercialized Bt cotton events, covering 99.5% of the area under cultivation, in 180 ex situ cotton accessions conserved in the National Gene Bank at National Bureau of Plant Genetic Resources (NBPGR), New Delhi, using polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-based assays. Based on the real-time event-specific and conventional transgene-specific PCR assays, no amplification signals specific to two major Bt cotton events MON531, MON15985; transgenes/markers/ regulatory elements of 4 widely cultivated commercialized Bt cotton events, i.e., cry1Ac, cry2Ab, marker genes, i.e., nptII (neomycin phosphotransferase), aadA (aminoglycoside-3’-adenyltransferase) and uidA (?-D-glucuronidase) marker genes, CaMV35S, nos (nopaline synthase) promoters and nos terminator were detected in any of the cotton accessions. The study shows that the cotton accessions conserved in National Gene Bank are GM free and the study can be used as a model for monitoring the adventitious presence of unintended mixing of cotton seed during seed production or harvesting in Bt cotton growing states of India. On similar lines, adventitious presence of transgenes can be checked in ex situ collections of different crops conserved in the genebanks.

However, the effectiveness of these systems largely depends on the ability to continuously monitor and regulate the essential microclimatic factors that directly influence plant health, disease resistance, and overall productivity. Microclimate refers to the localized climate conditions within a specific area— in this case, within the protected structure—that can differ significantly from external environmental conditions. Key parameters typically monitored include temperature, relative humidity, solar radiation or light intensity, carbon dioxide (CO?) concentration, vapor pressure deficit (VPD), and air movement or circulation. These factors are interrelated, and even minor fluctuations can greatly impact plant health, photosynthesis, transpiration, and reproduction. Thus, accurate and continuous monitoring of these variables is essential for effective climate control and optimal crop growth.
Temperature is arguably the most critical variable, as it controls metabolic processes, enzyme function, flowering time, and fruit development. A deviation from the ideal temperature range can either accelerate or stunt plant growth, leading to reduced yields or even crop failure. In tropical or semi-arid climates, temperature spikes inside protected structures can result in heat stress, while in temperate or mountainous regions, low temperatures can hinder growth. To mitigate this, temperature sensors—such as thermistors, RTDs, or thermocouples— are placed at different heights and zones within the structure to ensure uniform monitoring. It is a continuous function that aims primary to provide functionaries with required feedback and early indication of progress or lack of their achievements of intended results.

Digestion is the process by which food is converted into substances that can be absorbed and assimilated by a living organism. In most animals it is accomplished in the digestive tract by the mechanical and enzymatic breakdown of foods into simpler chemical compounds. Digestion usually consists of two elements: a mechanical/ physical stage, e.g. mastication, churning, emulsification, in which no chemical bonds are broken and no enzymes are required; and a chemical stage requiring enzymes in which complex food molecules are broken down by hydrolysis into a state in which they can be absorbed.

Hydrates carbons (saccharides) found in nature (animals and plants) are classified into three groups based on the number of monosaccharides found or released upon acid hydrolysis. Monosaccharides the groups of carbohydrates.
3.1 Formulation of Monosaccharides
The molecular formula of any monosaccharide (mono=one and saccharide=sugar) is Cn(H2O)n or (CH2O)n. Rhamnose and Deoxyribose are exceptions to the general formula of carbohydrates. The earth has two motions. (1) Rotation and (2) Revolution. The earth rotates about its axis (west to eastward) with a speed of 464 m/s or 1669 km/hr. Its angular speed of rotation is about 7.29 x 10^-5 radians/sec or 0.26244 radians per hour. This rotation causes day and night and diurnal variations of weather.

The rotating earth revolves round the sun in an elliptical orbit (with the sun at one of its Foci) with a speed (orbital speed) of about 1.073 x 10⁵ km/hr or 29770 m/s or 29.8 km/s. This revolution causes seasons. It has been stated earlier that the apparent path of the sun with respect to the celestial sphere is called ecliptic.

1. Introduction

Dave Cormier devised the term Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) in 2008 to describe an open online course “Connectivism and Connective Knowledge” designed by Siemens and Downes. University of Manitoba offered MOOC for the first time in 2008 formally as a credit course to regular students and informally with enrolment open to anybody in the world free of cost. Since then, there is proliferation of MOOCs worldwide.

The genus was named after Morax who first isolated the organisms from human conjunctivitis in 1896.

Properties of genus

1.   Morphology :  Moraxella are gram negative, small rods occurring in pair (diplobacilli). The aged cultures exhibit pleomorphism, occurring in pairs or chains as short, plump rods with rounded ends. Some strains may appear as cocci. The capsule is present in fresh isolates of some species (except Moraxella catarrhalis). They are non-motile and non-sporing. Moraxella bovis contains numerous type IV fimbriae on its surface.

2.   Moraxella is aerobic, fastidious and non-fermenting in nature. However, some strains prefer anaerobic condition for their growth.    

3.   Classification : The genus Moraxella belongs to the Moraxellaceae family. Previously it was known as Branhamella. Most of the species are commensal except a few, which have disease producing capabilities. Important species are M. bovis, M. ovis, M. catarrhalis, M. boevrei, M. canis, M. caprae, M. caviae, M. cuniculi, M. phenylpyruvica.

4. Resistance : Resistance to physical and chemical agents is not remarkable. They are susceptible to desiccation and do not survive long outside the host. The beta- lactam antibiotic resistance is observed among M. catarrhalis isolates from clinical cases. This resistance is associated with the production of beta-lactamase enzyme.

Moraxella bovis occurs as short (1.0 to 1.5 x 1.5 to 2.5 μm), plump Gramnegative rods or, occasionally, cocci which typically occur in pairs. This organism is non-motile, aerobic and usually catalase-positive and oxidasepositive. Although proteolytic, it is unable to utilize sugars. Growth, which is enhanced by the addition of blood or serum to media, does not occur on MacConkey agar. The optimal temperature for growth is 33-35°C. Most M.phenylpyruvica strains will grow on MacConkey agar. But M.bovis and M.lacunata are unable to do so.
Virulent strains, when isolated from cases of infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis, are fimbriate, haemolytic and grow into the agar. Species, other than M.bovis, which are periodically isolated from clinical specimens, are generally regarded as non-pathogenic.
Usual Habitat
Moraxella bovis is found on mucous membranes of carrier cattle. The organism is susceptible to desiccation and is short-lived in the environment. It can survive for up to 72 hours in the salivary organs and on the body surface of flies, which can act as vectors.
Colonial Appearance
On blood agar after 48 hours’ incubation the colonies of M.bovis are flat, round, small (1 mm diameter), greyish-white and friable, surrounded by a narrow zone of complete haemolysis. The appearance is not unlike that of a beta-haemolytic streptococcus. New isolates are often piliated and erode the agar, sinking into it. Colonial growths will autoagglutinate when suspended in saline. On subculture, colonial variation is common, pili are no longer formed and the colonies are butyrous and less likely to autoagglutinate. Some colonies can become non-haemolytic. horses are non-haemolytic even on primary isolation. M.lacunata and M. phenylpyruvica are non-haemolytic on blood agar and some strains of M. phenylpyruvica will grow on MacConkey agar.

ABSTRACT

Mushrooms are in use for centuries in traditional system of medicines, and have importance in greater Chinese and western pharmacopeia. Morchella species are well known across the globe as a popular and prized edible fungi and unique culinary saprophytes. They have a long history of usage in the formulation of different traditional medicine for centuries due to their anti- oxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-cancerous and immuno-stimulatory properties. Inspite of high demand and day-by-day increasing importance, cultivation of M. esculenta Dill.ex Pers and other morels are limited, however, there is a report that some species of Morchella are successfully cultivated in China. Phytochemical studies reveals that polysaccharide groups, phenolic compounds, tocopherols, ascorbic acid and vitamin D are the most active molecules present in morels. In addition to these compounds, morels are also rich in carbohydrates, amino acids, fatty acids, organic acids and several kinds of macro-and micronutrients. Literature revealed that no data on reproductive biology of M. esculenta are available till date. Future investigation is required to study the life cycle and the ecological association of different morels to high altitude regions, and causes of their association with coniferous and broad leaved trees such as Cedrus deodara, Pinus gerardiana, Picea smithiana, Quercus and Castanopsis species. There is an urgent need to explore all traditional knowledge associated with morels, phytochemistrys and associated pharmological studies of major compounds, reproductive cycle and their basic biology for future conservation of this precious mushrooms for man-kind.

Irrigation status at the national level
Out of the 140 m ha of net sown area in the country, 50 m ha ia under irrigation working out to a percentage of about 35. In the different states, the net irrigation per cent varies from 12 in Mizoram to as high as 90 in Punjab. Though at national level the contribution from canal and under ground water are almost equal, yet in Assam, Himachal Pradesh, Orissa and the other North eastern states, it is predominantly canal system, while in Gujarat , Punjab, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh and ground water predominates as the source. In Tamil Nadu, tank irrigation is an important irrigation source with almost Quarter of the irrigated area under this system. In the other southern states as well as in Orissa also tank system is in vogue to a considerable extent. The unscientific water use in both canal and lift irrigated commands has resulted in raising water table in the first case and fast receding ground water table in the second case. Thus, there is an imminent need for reducing the irrigation water application in agriculture with out affecting the yield and there by increasing the Water Use Efficiency (WUE) The options for increasing the water productivity/improve the WUE are discussed here.
Prevention of water losses in transportation system
Huge quantity of water is lost during the transportation of water from the source (reservoir/main canal! tank/ wells) to the field and till it reaches the root zone. Hardly 20 to 40 per cent of the water released reaches the root zone. The irrigation efficiency can be increased by the selection of proper method of irrigation along with proper design. Apart from the high evaporative and seepage losses occurring at the reservoirs and main canal, considerable amount of water is lost as seepage and evaporation in minors, distributaries, field channel etc. The losses occurring in a typical project in the alluvial plains as reported by the Second Irrigation Commission is given in table 2.

It is estimated that the country needs about 245mt of food grains, 30mt of sugar and jaggery, 7 lakh of tea, 1.7 lakh t of coffee, 10mt of vegetable oil and 17m bales of cotton. For realizing this, irrigated agriculture has to play an important role. To achieve this water use efficiency (WUE) in the irrigation sector has to be improved considerably as bulk of the available water is used in agriculture. But, with the ever-increasing population and industrialization problems, the demand for water by these sectors is bound to increase manyfolds in future. The requirement of water by different sectors during 2025 is estimated to be 105 m ham, which is 30 m ha m more than the present one. The share of water utilization for agriculture is expected to get reduced from the present percentage of 8~ to a value of 73 by 2025. Further, the demand for water for agricultural purposes is estimated to increase from 470 krrr’ to 740 krrr’ in a period of four decades (Table 1). During the same period there will be four­fold increase in the water demand for non-agriculture purposes.

Abstract

There is a consensus amongst the geoscientists that overall there has been progradation along the east and west coasts of peninsular India. However, the present day configuration of the coasts and some of the geomorphologic features such as absence of spit and delta along west coast and absence of major estuaries and petroliferous structures along east coast still remain controversial. The present study, based on the appreciation of certain geomorphological and tectonic features on Landsat imagery and aerial photographs of southern part of Indian Peninsula, suggests that the evolution of the coastline has been mainly controlled by tectonism.

The tapering nature of the coastline is attributed to the Precambrian orographic axis. The serrated nature of the post Precambrian coast line is due to the Precambrian transverse faults, whereas the serrated margin of the post Gondwana, Post cretaceous and post Tertiary coast lines are attributed once again to the Precambrian faults reactivated time and again. During the Quaternary period the coast line has undergone many modifications. The coast line attained sinuosity due to Pleistocene folding which is well manifested by river migration. The coast line was subsequently faulted and shifted with en echelon pattern due to N-S regional compression which is referable to the collision of Indian Plate with Tibetan plate.

Bacteria are most widely distributed, the simplest in morphology, the smallest in size and difficult to identify. They are prokaryotic and a few are photosynthetic. Most bacteria are only 0.5 to 2.0 μm in diameter. Bacteria are generally rod, spherical or curved shaped. Rod shaped bacteria may vary considerably in length, have square round or pointed ends and may be motile or non-motile. The spherical or coccus shaped bacteria may occur single, in pairs in tetrads, in chains or in regular masses. The helical and curved shaped bacteria exist as slender spirochetes, spirillum and bent rods (vibrios). In this exercise the ubiquitousness of these organisms will be demonstrated in the air and water, on body and in mouth etc.

Abstract

Sesame (Sesamum indicum L.) is known as the king of oil seeds in India due to the high oil content (50-54%) of its seed. The purpose of this study was to evaluate morphology of sesame under high temperature stress. Seventeen released varieties of sesame (Sesame indicum L.) were studied during kharif 2009 under rainfed conditions. Analysis of variance on ten quantitative and qualitative traits was carried out. The mean, range, phenotypic and genotypic variation, heritability in broad sense and genetic advance were calculated.

The Kashmir Valley, situated in the western Himalayas between latitudes 33°01'N and 35°00'N and longitudes 73°48'E and 75°30'E, spans an area of 4,920 square kilometers and sits at an elevation of 1,585 meters. This region is rich in water resources, featuring numerous lakes, rivers, and wetlands. The ecosystem benefits from a continuous supply of water from perennial glaciers, mountain streams, and a multitude of springs. New Delhi 6% of Kashmir's land surface is covered by various types of water bodies, enhancing the valley's natural beauty (Zutshi and Gopal, 2000). Whether from glaciers, springs, rivers, or lakes, the water in Kashmir contributes significantly to its picturesque landscape. The Kashmir Valley hosts a variety of 23 fish species, both native and introduced (Bhat et al., 2020). Cypriniformes, the largest group of freshwater fish, are divided into two main superfamilies: Cyprinoidea (carp like fishes) and Cobitoidea (loach fishes). This classification covers a wide variety of aquatic species, highlighting the extensive biodiversity within the Cypriniformes order (Nelson et al, 2016). The initial documentation of cold-water fish in India was provided by Hamilton in 1822. The Cobitidae family, known as true loaches, includes species such as Botia birdi found in the Kashmir Valley. The family Balitoridae, specifically the subfamily Nemacheilinae, in this region include two scaleless fish species earlier named as Cobitis vittata and C. marmorata by Heckel (1838) but Kullander et al. (1999) renamed them as Triplophysa marmorata and T. kashmirensis and Paraschistura punjabensis. Loaches are a fascinating subject for aquatic enthusiasts and researchers alike. Found predominantly in Eurasian waters, these bottom-dwelling fish are recognized for their distinctive elongated bodies, small scales, and barbels around the mouth which aid in their sensory and feeding functions. Loaches are renowned for their adaptability, thriving in a variety of habitats ranging from fast-flowing rivers to stagnant ponds. With over 200 species classified across several genera, loaches exhibit a remarkable range of behaviours and ecological roles, from the well-known clown loach (Chromobotia macracanthus), popular in the aquarium trade, to the stone loach (Barbatula barbatula), a species integral to the ecosystems of European rivers and streams (Nelson, 2006; Kottelat, 2012). Loaches play significant roles in their natural habitats, contributing to the benthic community dynamics and nutrient cycling. Their sensitivity to environmental changes makes them valuable bioindicators for assessing the health of freshwater ecosystems (Kottelat & Freyhof, 2007).

General

1. Habitat: A habitat is an ecological or environmental area that is inhabited by a particular species of plant. The term typically refers to the zone in which the plant lives and where it can find food, shelter, protection and mates for reproduction It is the natural home of a plant. Each habitat has its own particular type of climate like:
   1. Tropical Spices: These are grown at 1800 m - 3500 m height from ground level eg. clove, nutmeg, cinnamon, konkam, galangal, small cardamom, vanilla, black pepper, ginger, turmeric.
   2. Subtropical Spices: These are grown at 300 m - 900 m height from ground level eg. cumin, dill, fennel, coriander, fenugreek, onion, garlic
   3. Temperate Spices: These are grown at 900 m - 1800 m height from ground level eg. saffron, asafetida, caraway seed, celery seed, savoy, caper, balm, origanum, calamus, thyme etc.

Eventhough nematodes occupy nearly every habitat on earth, they are remarkably similar in morphology and life stages. Despite their structural complexity, certain basic principles are common to all nematodes. Nematodes are triploblastic, bilaterally symmetrical, unsegmented, pseudocoelomate, vermiform and colourless animals. The plant parasitic nematodes are slender, elongate, spindle shaped or fusiform, tapering towards both ends and circular in cross section. The length of the nematodes may very from 0.2 mm (Paratylenchus) to about 11.0 mm (Paralongidorus maximus). Their body width vary from 0.01 to 0.05 mm. In few genera, the females on maturity assume pear shape (Meloidogyne), globular shape (Globodera), reniform (Rotylenchulus reniformis) or saccate (Tylenchulus semipenetrans). The swelling increases the reproductive potential of the organism. Radially symmetric traits (triradiate, tetraradiate and hexaradiate) exist in the anterior region. The regions of intestine, excretory and reproductive systems show tendencies towards asymmetry. The nematodes have one or two tubular gonads which open separately in the female and into the rectum in the male which also have the copulatory spicules.

The free living saprophytic nematodes are generally larger in size. The animal and human parasitic helminths may have length of few centimetres to even a meter or more. The helminth parasitising whale fish is about 27 feet long. The study on these animals and human parasites are known as Helminthology.

Guava is a fast growing evergreen shrub or small tree that can grow to a height of 3-10 m. It has a shallow root system. Guava produces low drooping branches from the base and suckers from the roots. The trunk is slender, 20 cm in diameter, covered with a smooth green to red brown bark that peels off in thin flakes. Young twigs are pubescent. The leaves grow in pairs, opposite each other. The leaf blade is elliptic to oblong in shape, 5-15 cm long x 3-7 cm broad, finely pubescent and veined on the lower face, glabrous on the upper face. The flowers are white in colour, about 3 cm in diameter, solitary or in 2-3 flower clusters borne at the axils of newly emerging lateral shots. The fruit is a fleshy, pyriform or ovoid berry that can weigh up to 500 g. The skin colour is yellowish to orange. The flesh can be white, yellow, pink or red, sour to sweet, juicy and aromatic. The fruit contains a variable number of seeds (about 3-5 mm long) and its mesocarp is characterized by the presence of small (0.1 mm) and hard fibrous structures called stone cells (sclereids), which may cause damage to processing machinery (Toma & Luchian, 2019).
3.1 Reproductive Biology and Pollination
Research on breeding systems in Psidium focuses primarily on P. guajava, which is an allogamous species characterized by an open pollination reproductive cycle. Nevertheless, self-pollination can occur. Bee-pollination, in which pollen is the sole reward, is the dominant pollination system in Psidium. Species of the superfamily Apoidea are important pollinators of both P. guajava and P. guineense. Both species are also pollinated by the European honeybee, Apis mellifera. Psidium guyanense, P. nutans, P. rostratum, and P. rutidocarpum lack comprehensive studies of their breeding systems, pollination, and dispersal (Sarkar & Sarkar, 2022).

1. Morphology of Bacteria
Structure of Bacteria
Bacteria are very small with a diameter of 0.5 – 1 μm in size. Due to this small size the surface area / volume ratio is very high compared to that of large organisms of similar shape. The large surface area compared to a small volume facilitates easy nourishment of all areas of the cell. So there is no circulatory mechanism to distribute the nutrients and there is little or no cytoplasmic movement within the cell.
i) Shape
Bacteria exhibit three types of morphology;
• Spherical - cocci (coccus) - Greek word kokkos, meaning a berry
• Straight rods - bacilli (bacillus) - Latin word bacillus, meaning a stick
• Helically curved rods -spirilla (spirillum)
Variations in these basic forms are also seen. Eg: cocobacillary, ovoid and filamentous.

Electrocardiogram (ECG)

Electrocardiogram is a graphic record of electrical events of the heart recorded by the electrocardiograph. It represents the sum up surface voltage and direction of electrical activity produced during cardiac muscle depolarization and repolarization plotted against time (Fig. 33). The time is represented on the X- axis (horizontal line) and amplitude of voltage is represented on the Y-axis (vertical line) of the graph. The potential difference occurring over the surface of the body (at different lead placement locations) is associated with depolarization and repolarization of heart muscle (myocardium). The amplitude of the potential difference is measured as milli volt (mV) and their duration is measured in second or milliseconds.

Bacteria are morphologically different. This characteristic is helpful in the identification of bacteria. Routine study of bacterial morphology should include examination of stained preparations. Motility should be examined by hanging drop preparation. According to the requirement, certain cell structures may be stained. Stained preparations should be made preferably from fresh agar slant cultures. Smears of Streptococcus should be made from a liquid culture. Morphology of bacteria may be described under the following terms:

1.Shape: Spherical, coccobacillary, short or long rods, filamentous, comma- shaped, curved or spiral forms.

2.Size: Spherical are measured in diameter and rod-shaped in length and breadth. Measurement is expressed in microns (µ).

3.Sides: Straight, concave, bulging, parallel or irregular.

4.Ends: Round, pointed, truncate or concave.

5.Axis: Straight or curved.

6.Arrangement: Singly, in twos, in groups of four or eight, in grape-like bunches, in long chains, or scattered irregularly, may be in bundles, angular arrangements or in Chinese letters.

7.Pleomorphism: Bacteria may differ from their typical shape. Some of the older cultures may depart greatly from their typical forms, and may show spindles, clubs, and filaments, swollen and branching forms. Variation may be both in shape and size.

8.Capsule: May or may not be present. When present, size should be noted. This requires special staining.

Most of the DNA of an living organism is packaged and organized in a chromosome as well as in mitochondria and cell organelles (Feulgen and Rossenbeck 1924). DNA is not found on its own but rather is structured in long strands wrapped around protein complex called nucleosome consisted of a protein called histone. During most of the duration of cell cycle a chromosome consists of long double helix DNA molecule (with associated proteins)During S phase the chromosome gets replicated resulting in X –shaped structure (chromatids) and still attached to a single centromere. The basic role of the chromosome is to provide a frame work which allows each linear segment of the genome to replicate and segregate efficiently. Failure in either of processes cause chromosome imbalance in daughter cells. Three specific cis-acting sites are required for stable chromosome maintenance, i.e., an origin of replication, a centromere and telomeres.

Classical studies of the morphologyof individual chromosomesof the plant species begun by S. Nawaschin 1910-16 and continued by Taylor (1925), Sharp (1929) and Mc Clintock (1929-30). And eventually it was possible to set up working models which account for the internal structure and chemistry of the chromosome and the genetic material as well as genetical facts. The use of aceto-carmine with iron (Belling, 1921) and application of heat greatly improved the staining differentiation of chromosomes. Smears have practically replaced the paraffin techniques of studying chromosome. The gross morphology of chromosomes is generally worked out either at prophase stages of meiosis or metaphase in somatic tissues. The chromosomes may differ in thickness, total length, position of centromere or spindle fiber attachment region, chromomere pattern and number and position of secondary constriction. The total length of chromosomes at metaphase also differs in different tissues of a species and also in certain tissues chromosome present may be very different in appearance. Figure 1 shows various morphological features of a eukaryotic chromosome

‘Integument’, the outer layer of insects consists of the ‘basement membrane’, ‘epidermis’ and the ‘cuticle’. One of the most important characteristics of insects is the presence of the rather hard, flexible chitinous exoskeleton or cuticle, which covers the entire body and provides support to the body. The exoskeleton of insects that is akin to the internal skeleton of vertebrates accounts for their size and shape. Movement is made possible by the division of the cuticle into separate plates or sclerites.  Primarily these  sclerites  are confined to segments and the sclerite of one segment is connected to the sclerite of the adjoining segment by means of an articulate called ‘suture’, a region in which the cuticle is very thin and flexible. The cuticle of each segment is divided into four primary sclerites viz., a dorsal tergum, two lateral pleura and a ventral sternum. The dermal glands present in the epidermal layer secrete the entire cuticle of the insect.

Like that of the body, the cuticular skeleton of the appendages is divided into tube-like segments connected to one another by articular membranes, thus creating a joint at each junction. Such joints enable the segments of the appendages, as well as those of the body to move freely.

In addition to the exoskeleton, an endoskeleton is also developed. This may be an infolding of the procuticle that produces inner projections or ‘apodemes’ equal to bones in vertebrates on which the muscles are inserted.

The insect body is made up of multicellular tissues. The body is bilaterally symmetrical and is covered by a hard, chitinous exoskeleton. The chitin at the junction of the segments is thinner and pliable and hence insects can bend their bodies. The exoskeleton is made up of several layers of non-living cells produced from the epidermis. Because of the hard chitin us exoskeleton of the body, the growth of the insect is affected beyond a certain extent. So, to facilitate further growth,, this exoskeleton is cast off a few times and this is known as ‘molting’. The number of moultings in a particular species is more or less constant.

Life forms are composed of one of two basic cell types : Eukaryotic or Prokaryotic. Generally, eukaryotic cells are larger and more complex than the prokaryotic cells and possess a membrane-enclosed nucleus; eukaryotic means ‘true nucleus’ (eu=true; karyon = nucleus). All plants, animals, fungi, protozoa and algae are composed of eukaryotic cells. Only the microorganisms classes as bacteria and the archaea are prokaryotic cells. Prokaryotic cells have no nuclear membrane and therefore lack a true nucleus. The latin prefix pro means ‘early’ and in this instance suggests the somewhat primitive nuclear structure found in bacterial cells. Eukaryotic microorganism are sometimes simply referred to as eukaryotes, and the prokaryotic microbes as prokaryotes.
