i) Silicon Technology

Silicon technology in agriculture refers to the use of silicon-based compounds, primarily silicon dioxide (SiO2 ), in pesticide formulations and as part of integrated pest management (IPM) strategies. Silicon technology is not a pesticide itself but is used to enhance the effectiveness of pesticides and contribute to sustainable pest management. Here are some ways silicon technology is applied in pesticide use:

1. Silicon-Based Adjuvants: Silicon-based adjuvants are added to pesticide formulations to improve their efficacy. These adjuvants can enhance the spreading, wetting, and sticking properties of pesticides, ensuring better coverage of plant surfaces and improving the retention of the active ingredient. This leads to more effective pest control and reduces the need for higher pesticide concentrations.

2. Induced Resistance: Silicon has been shown to induce plant resistance against pests. When plants take up silicon from the soil and deposit it in their cell walls, it can create physical barriers that make it more difficult for pests to penetrate plant tissues. Additionally, silicon can trigger the production of defensive compounds in plants, making them less susceptible to pest damage.

3. pH Buffering: Silicon compounds can act as pH buffers in pesticide formulations, helping to maintain the stability and efficacy of the active ingredients over a broader pH range. This can be particularly useful when mixing pesticides with other chemicals or using them in different environmental conditions.

Since bees are indicator species, their abundance on earth serves as a barometer for environmental conditions and the health of ecosystems. With up to 60,000 honey bees living in a single hive, each with a distinct job, the life of a bee is undoubtedly one of nature’s greatest miracles. There is much to be learnt from the exquisitely smart, well-organized lives of bees. Around the world, honey bee hives have been experiencing severe decreases over the past ten years, and local pollinating species are also experiencing significant losses. A growing number of studies point to a particular class of pesticides as the principal cause of the worldwide pollinator disaster, and if our government agencies and certain legislators don’t act quickly, the pollinator situation will only get worse.

Rachel Carson written Silent Spring 50 years ago, she expressed her concerns about the use of systemic insecticides like neonicotinoids. We are currently seeing f irst-hand how her forecasts come true

“The world of systemic insecticides is a weird world, surpassing the imaginings of the brothers Grimm… It is a world where the enchanted forest of the fairy tales has become the poisonous forest in which an insect that chews a leaf or sucks the sap of a plant is doomed. It is a world where a flea bites a dog, and dies because the dog’s blood has been made poisonous, where an insect may die from vapors emanating from a plant it has never touched, where a bee may carry poisonous nectar back to its hive and presently produce poisonous honey (Rachel Caron, Silent Spring)”.

Cell surface components such as adhesins, polysaccharides, and proteins play major roles in the adherence of probiotic bacteria to the intestinal epithelium, interactions that might lead to pathogen exclusion and immunomodulation of host cells. Probiotic bacteria have the ability to produce exocellular polymers called Exopolysachcharides (EPSs). These exocellular polymers present in the surface of many lactic acid bacteria, including Lactobacilli.The adhesive properties of lactobacilli are directly linked to their surface properties which are influenced by the structure and composition of their cell wall. The cell envelope of lactobacilli, bacteria, is composed of the bilipidic plasma membrane with embedded proteins encompassed by the cell wall. The bacterial cell wall consists of a thick multilayered sacculus made of peptidoglycan (PG) with teichoic acids (wall teichoic acids (WTA) and/or lipoteichoic acids (LTA)), exopolysaccharides (EPS), proteinaceous filaments called pili, and proteins that are anchored to the cell wall through different mechanisms (Figure 1).

Some species of lactobacilli possess an additional paracrystalline layer of proteins surrounding the PG layer, referred to as the S layer. These macromolecules together may play crucial roles in determining species and strain-specific characteristics of lactobacilli by influencing host-microbe interactions and microbial adaptations to the changing host environment. Several studies implicate that cell surface components, either individually or collectively, involve in host-microbe interactions. Lactobacilli beneficially affect the host in many ways by producing abundant variety of EPSs through the activity of extracellular glycosyl transferases. Approximately 30 species of lactobacilli are described as EPS producers. Among them, the best known are L. casei, L. acidophilus, L.brevis, L. curvatus, L. delbrueckii bulgaricus, L. helveticus, L. rhamnosus, L. plantarum, L. johnsonii, etc.

Emerging and reemerging infectiousdiseases are defined as the diseases of which the incidence has shown an increasing trend in the recent past or threatening to increase in the near future. Emerging infectious disease (EID) are caused by apathogen previously unknown to cause disease orre-emerging pathogens, which have previously causeddisease but now reveal increased infectivity orextended transmission ranges that improve their ability to cause disease in human populations. Today, whole world is facing a concerning rise in emerging infectious diseases and the majority of EID have been observed in the past decades.Multiple recent EID outbreaks e.g. the 2003 SARS and the 2012 MERS outbreaks, the 2009 swine flu pandemic,the 2013–2016 Ebolavirus epidemic, the 2014chikungunya outbreak in the Western Hemisphere,the 2015 Zika and the 2019 SARS Cov 2 virus epidemic have exhibited significantmorbidity and mortality and large geographicranges. These outbreakshave indicated the potential for evenmore severe outcomes in future outbreaks. Severaladditional pathogens are also considered capable ofproducing EID outbreaks, these include Escherichia coliO157:H7, hantavirus, dengue virus and West Nilevirus, while malaria, tuberculosis (TB), cholera, andinfluenza are often considered reemerging diseases with the potential for new outbreaks.Many newly emerging diseases in humans are actually long-standing zoonosesof animal host species that appeared inhuman populations following a climatic or environmental change. The complex interplay between climate change, ecosystems, and human activities have created conditions that favour the emergence and spread of infectious diseases posing significant challenges to public health. Although, improved sanitation, increased access to health care, and advances in preventive and clinical medicine have reduced the mortality and morbidity rates of several infectious diseases.

In modern times, it predominantly concerns the increase in Earth’s average temperature due to human activities, particularly the burning of fossil fuels10. The rise in greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide traps heat in the atmosphere, leading to global warming. In connection with animal health, climate change affects the ecosystems in which animals live, influencing the availability of water and food, the spread of diseases, and the physiological stress animals endure due to temperature extremes. Domestic animals, mostly livestock, are vulnerable to heat stress and reduced productivity, whereas wildlife faces altered habitats and increased exposure to pathogens. The connection between climate change and animal health is intricate, as changes in temperature, humidity, and weather patterns create new challenges for both domestic and wild species.

In poultry, the intestine is home to trillions of microorganisms, with bacterial concentrations reaching up to 10¹² bacteria per gram of digesta. In a healthy digestive system, this microbial community is highly diverse and metabolically active, supporting crucial functions in digestion, immune defense, and overall health. The gastrointestinal tract (GIT) of a newly hatched chick begins as a sterile environment but quickly develops a complex microbiota as the bird matures. The composition of gut microbiota is highly variable, shaped by environmental factors, diet, the genetic makeup of the host, and other influences. This dynamic microbiome plays a pivotal role in nutrient absorption, disease resistance, and growth efficiency, making it a central focus in poultry health management and productivity enhancement.The health and productivity of poultry are fundamentally influenced by the gut microbiome, which shapes digestion, immunity, and growth potential. Microbial diversity variesacross several poultry species, including broilers raised intensively, native chickens in free-range conditions, and unique species such as Guinea fowl, Kadaknath, and red jungle fowl. Using advanced metagenomicsanalysis of microbial diversity, structure, and function, highlighting the implications of microbiota composition on poultry health and productivity possible. The gut microbiota is increasingly recognized as a major determinant of health and productivity in poultry. It not only influences nutrient absorption and metabolism but also plays a critical role in immune response and pathogen resistance. Intensive farming practices have altered gut microbial ecosystems in commercial broilers, often reducing diversity compared to native breeds and heritage species raised in field conditions.

Status of Tuberculosis : Tuberculosis is a complex and multispecies disease since the origin of human civilization. Evidence of tuberculosis (TB) exists in 3000 years old Egyptian mummies and about 17,000 year old fossilized bison (Fareed et al., 2024). Now, every year, 10 million people fall ill with tuberculosis. Out of 10 million people currently with new active TB, 1,40,000 (range, 69,800–235,000) are estimated to be new cases of zTB (1.4%) of which an approximately 11,400 (8.1%, range 4,470-21,600) died (WHO, 2020).Despite being a preventable and curable disease, 1.5 million people die from TB each year – making it the world’s top infectious killer (WHO, 2023). Disease is still in an increasing scenario as evident that in 2018, an estimated 10 million people fell ill with TB and 1.5 million died of the disease whereas in 2021 there were an estimated 10.6 million new cases of TB and 1.6 million TB deaths (Ayalew et al., 2023). COVID-19 has further increased the projection of TB and increased the expected case number. As it is predicted that between 2020-2050, 31.8 million will have died of TB, More than half million cases of TB annually are classified as drug resistant, as a result, TB is becoming more difficult to diagnose and treat.

Accurate history and Thorough examination of reproductive tract

Accurate history is a powerful tool of enormous clinical value. Behavioral problems due to pain or psychological factors can also be ruled out on the basis of adequate history of the patient. Tentative differential diagnosis can be made by taking history of previous breedings.Through digital and vaginiscopic exanimation of reproductive tract helps to rule out anatomical abnormalities, which may interfere with natural mating. It also helps in diagnosis of fertile phase of oestrus cycle. In cases of refusal to mate due to anatomical problems like septum, narrow passage or due to behavioral problems AI can be performed. Vaginoscopic examination aids vaginal cytology in deciding right time of natural service or insemination in proper breeding management or abnormal oestrus cycle.

Podocytes are highly specialized cells with a complex structure that plays an important role in kidney physiology. The characteristic feature of these cells is that its cell body has foot processes which interdigitates with the foot processes of another podocytes leaving filtration slits in between them. These filtration slits are bridged by the slit diaphragm which is an extracellular structure. These cells are located on the outer surface of glomerular basement membrane (GBM) and thereby they check the protein loss. The cell body of these cells contain nucleus, golgi apparatus, smooth and rough endoplasmic reticulum, lysosome and mitochondria. Their main function is in establishing the selective permeability of the glomerular f iltration barrier. Several molecules, including nephrin, CD2AP, FAT, ZO-1, P-cadherin, Podocin, and Neph 1-3 have all been shown to be associated with the slit diaphragm (SD) protein complex, and some of these molecules are critical for its integrity. In cases of chronic disease podocytes gets loosen and they separate from the surface of glomerular basement membrane (GBM). Podocyte injury frequently leads to reorganization of the slit diaphragm and reorganization of the foot process structure. Disturbances of podocyte architecture results in retraction of its foot processes which leads to proteinuria. This may be thelater progress into acquired glomerular diseases. The approach to regenerate podocyte and develop a mechanism of podocyte specific drug delivery system by understanding the molecular mechanism of podocyte function appears a promising area for treatment of proteinuric kidney diseases in future.

According to statistics from the Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying (DAHD, 2019), India saw the slaughter of 11.92 million buffalo, 3.05 million cattle, 50.86 million sheep, 97.19 million goats, 10.73 million pigs, and over 2.81 million poultry birds in 2018-19, resulting in the production of 8.11 million tonnes of meat.

Biofilm formation is a series of complex process and accomplished mainly in five stages -Reversibleattachment, Irreversible attachment or colonization,Proliferation, Maturation &Dispersion. Usually biofilms comprise 10% of dry mass that represent microorganisms while the rest 90%derived from the matrix of biofilm. Microbial biofilms are aggregates of microorganisms embedded in self-produced matrices and adhere to an abiotic or biotic surface. Firstly, Marshall et al. (1971) threw light on the concept of biofilms &it’s complexity was discussed by many researchers. According to Donlan and Costerton (2002) “Biofilm as a structured community of microbial cells enclosed in a self-produced polymeric matrix and adherent to a surface to interface, and to each other” still remains the most appreciated definition of biofilms (Mishra et al., 2022). Basically, microbial biofilms are complex, dynamic and three dimensional heterogeneous structures in which cells are interconnected by EPS (Extracellular Polymeric Substances). Biofilms are found to be resistant against UV light, metal toxicity, antimicrobials and other chemical agents like soaps, detergents, disinfectant and other cleaning agents. Future insight the immense need to implicate effective methods for elimination of biofilms from the environment.

A novel zoonotic disease was reported in December 2019 in Wuhan (China) and patients were presumably exposed to a new coronavirus, designated as SARS CoV-2. This virus probably crossed into humans from an animal species, most likely a bat, spreading rapidly across the world and causing the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). This infectious illness was responsible for a global pandemic that caused deaths and economic despair (Santaniello et al., 2023). The latest WHO data (December 2023) confirmed 77,38,19,856 cases worldwide since the beginning of this zoonosis and 70,10,568 deaths (WHO, 2023), making this pandemic one of the deadliest in human history. Human CoVs (HCoVs) are often of animal origin but adapt to humans via direct jumping or through intermediate species. These data and the zoonotic origin of SARS-CoV-2 quickly raised questions concerning the potential role that animals could play in transmitting the virus to humans or other species.

Forensic science has traditionally been associated with human criminal investigations, but its application to veterinary cases is gaining momentum. Hair is a specialized outgrowth of epidermis, a component of the skin. Hair is chemically stable especially when compared to other physiological materials such as blood, semen or any other f luid as it is strongly resistant to decomposition and this property makes hair a nearly ideal type for physical evidence. However, the forensic identification of animal hair requires different skill sets and competencies to those required for human hair comparisons (Tridico et al. 2014). Hair carry a lot of biological information, their examination is easy and very cost effective. Recently Funes et al. (2023) has reviewed both macro and micro quantitative methods for human hair analysis.

The study of the animal hair could represent a useful tool in veterinary forensic investigation and thus can be helpful in species identification in veterolegal cases, illegal transport of slaughtered animals, poaching or wildlife crime, fraud in textile and fur industry, traceability of predators and identification of their victims (Dahiya and Yadav 2013). The use of hair analysis in forensic science dates back to the 19th century, with early forensic scientists recognizing its potential in criminal investigations. Over time, techniques have evolved from simple visual comparisons to sophisticated microscopic and biochemical analyses.

GPCRs are integral membrane proteins that contain seven transmembrane (TM) α-helices, with a short cytoplasmic Helix 8 interconnected to the TM7 and the cytoplasmic C terminal. The amino terminal is extracellularly disposed.

The 7 TM helices are interconnected by 3 extracellular and 3 intracellular loops. On the extracellular side between TM3 and TM4 is located a conserved disulphide bond. GPCRs being allosteric proteins, agonist binding at one site that is accessed from the extracellular space and termed the orthosteric site, promotes allosteric binding to another partner, a heterotrimeric G protein at the cytoplasmic side. Agonist binding not only promotes binding of the receptor to a G protein, but the affinity of the agonist for the receptor is increased by the G protein.

Food Animals are the main protein source for human nutrition in the world.Sub-therapeutic doses of antibiotics are commonly used in food animal production, through their addition in feed and wateras antibiotic growth promoters (AGPs). Animal production is considered one of the main sources of antimicrobial resistances (AMR), thus the research for alternative strategies to the use of antibiotics in animal diet is essential to f ight the emergence of AMR. Currently, AMR causes the death of 700,000 people per year and it is forecasted that this will increase exponentially to 10 million by 2050, becoming the main cause of death worldwide.The reduction of antimicrobial resistance is a major challenge for the scientific community. In a few decades, infections by resistant bacteria are forecasted to be the main cause of death in the world. The withdrawal of antibiotics as growth promoters and their preventive use in animal production is essential to avoid these resistances, but this may impair productivity and health due to the increase in gut inflammation. The best alternative to Antibiotic growth promoters (AGPs) is a general improvement of conditions for food animals. In order to start a reformation of the Food Animal Industry as a whole, it’s essential to research to find out effective, resistance rare, low toxic and affordable alternatives to antibiotic growth promoters. Culinary herbs derived bioactives may be the promising products to address this challenge because it is traditionally proven to restore the gastrointestinal health due to beneficial effects on microbiota composition, mucosal barrier integrity, and immune system to control inflammation.

Herbal medicines have become popular these days as complementary therapies for various disorders. These are available as single compounds, enriched extracts, or polyherbal preparations. The polyherbal formulations behave very differently as compared to the single compounds due to the interaction of different chemical constituents, present therein, with multiple receptors/targets in the biological system. The presence of the multiple chemical constituents is also likely to exhibit pharmacokinetic and metabolic interactions. Thus, it becomes difficult to monitor and predict the exact pharmacokinetic profile of all the chemical constituentspresent in a polyherbal formulation (He et al. 2011; Xie et al. 2012). As a result, pharmacokinetic studies of polyherbal formulations have been a long-standing hurdlein phytotherapy research. Conventional scientific approach for studying thepharmacological behaviour of a multicomponent therapy is to isolate the individualcompound and study the effect of these compounds on various targets and enzymes, independently. To rationalize the use of herbal medicines,a clear understanding of their pharmacokinetics and metabolism in the physiologicalsystem is required. A fundamental knowledge of pharmacokinetics of phytopharmaceuticals will be helpful inauthenticating their use.

Role of Leptin in Uterine Function

Leptin is a 16 kDa protein consisting of 167 amino acids, encoded by the LEP gene located on chromosome 7q31.3. Structurally, leptin comprises four anti parallel alpha helices (A, B, C, and D), two long loops (AB and CD), and a short loop (BC). It has three binding sites: site I is in the C-terminal region of helix D, site II spans the surface of helices A and C, and site III is located near the N-terminal region of helix D. Its structural similarity to proinflammatory cytokines such as interleukin-6 and granulocyte colony-stimulating factor suggests its potential immune-modulatory roles.

Leptin’s effects on uterine contractions have been studied at length. In human uterine smooth muscle, leptin inhibits both spontaneous and oxytocin-induced contractions. Moynihan et al. (2008) reported that leptin caused a 46% reduction in spontaneous and a 42% reduction in oxytocin-induced contractions. A lesser degree of relaxation (36%) was noted in a larger study involving non-laboring human uterine tissue, while rat uterine tissue exhibited a 24% relaxation (Mumtaz et al., 2015). The concentrations used in these studies ranged from 1 nM to 1 µM, which includes the physiological range in pregnant women with normal body mass index (BMI). Leptin levels rise with increasing BMI during pregnancy (Hendler et al., 2005).

Spermatozoa, the male reproductive cells, play a crucial role in fertilization and subsequent embryonic development. However, toxic substances such as heavy metals(lead) can disrupt spermatozoa function through various mechanisms, including oxidative stress, DNA damage, and disruption of cellular homeostasis. The toxic effects can impair sperm motility, viability, and acrosomal integrity, ultimately leading to reduced fertility. Livestock are not immune to these toxic insults, which can compromise their reproductive efficiency and agricultural productivity. Lead (Pb) is a toxic pollutant and is extensively distributed in the environmental and biological systems. This topic envisages the detrimental effects of lead on spermatozoa functions, shedding light on the underlying mechanisms, signal transduction pathways, and sperm kinematic alterations.

Cannibalism is a bad habit of birds in which the birds attack their fellow birds and eat their flesh. It is done through sharp end of beak, which causes deep wounds specially on vent. Sometimes the wounds are so deep that leads to death of affected bird. Two types of cannibalism vices are common i.e. vent pecking and feather pecking.

Avian mycoplasmosis is caused by several pathogenic mycoplasma of which mycoplasmosis due to Mycoplasma gallisepticum (Mg), Mycoplasma synoviae (MS) and Mycoplasma meleagridis are important. The mycoplasma are group of bacteria that lack cell wall due to which the shape of bacteria is pleomorphic. Due to lack of cell wal, mycoplasma are resistant to those drug which act on cell wall and includes Penicillin and its derivatives. Mycoplasma primarily affects respiratory system and joints in birds and respiratory and urogenital system in humans. The avian mycoplasma are mainly transmitted by vertical route (egg transmission), but can also transmitted by horizontal route. Mycoplasma gallisepticum (Mg) causes chronic respiratory disease (CRD) in chicken, turkeys and game birds. Mycoplasma synoviae (Ms) causes infectious synovitis in chicken and turkeys whereas Mycoplasma meleagridis cause disease in turkey. The Mg and Ms belongs to class of Mollicutes (Molecutis: soft tissue), order Mycoplasmatales and family Mycoplasmataceae. The CRD caused by Mg affects respiratory system and air sac in presence of other respiratory pathogen/ stress or immunosuppression. Clinically, CRD affected birds show respiratory rales, gasping, nasal discharge, and rhinitis with mortality due to complication with other respiratory viral pathogens or E. coli infection. The Ms has affinity for tendon and ligaments of joint causing severe lameness due to tenosynovitis with mild lesions in respiratory system and air sac. The Ms affected birds show lameness, breast blister and increased culling of male breeder birds. The Mg and Ms causes significant losses in poultry industry due to decreased egg production, condemnation and downgrading of carcass and decreased hatchability. Mycoplasma meleagridis in turkey associated with air sacculitis and drop in egg production.

Introduction

Rickettsial diseases in poultry are caused by various species of bacteria belonging to the genus Rickettsia. These diseases can have significant economic implications for the poultry industry due to decreased production, increased mortality, and trade restrictions. Rickettsial diseases affecting poultry are relatively uncommon compared to other pathogens but can still occur. Rickettsial organisms are tiny, pleomorphic, weakly gram-negative bacilli that multiply by binary fission. The Rickettsia requires an arthropod for transmission and to complete its life cycle. The organisms are non-motile and non-capsulated and possess both DNA and RNA. Some of the rickettsial diseases affecting poultry include:

1. Rocky Mountain spotted fever: Chickens can be infected with various species of Rickettsia, including Rickettsia rickettsia, which causes Rocky Mountain spotted fever in humans. In chickens, rickettsial infections can lead to symptoms such as fever, lethargy, decreased egg production, respiratory distress, and neurological signs.

Introduction

The protozoa (meaning proto- first and zoa mean animals) are considered to primitive and are unicellular organism. The protozoa are Eukaryotic organism having nucleus in which the genetic information is stored in chromosomes of nucleus. In poultry, the protozoan disease categorized into two main group

1. Intestinal protozoan parasites include Eimeria spp. (Coccidiosis), Cryptosporidia (Cryptosporidiosis) Histomoniasis (Histomonas meleagridis), Trichomoniasis (Trichomonas spp.) and Spironucleus (Hexamitiasis).

Coccidiosis is important disease of poultry caused by protozoa of the genus Eimeria. The disease occurs by ingestion of sporulated oocyst ehcih upon action of trypsin rupture in gizzard and proventriculus relealeses sporozoites. The sprozoites penetrate mucosa of intestine and two generation of asexual reproduction occurs (Schizogony) and releases merozoites which mature and produces gamonts. Sexyual reproduction occurs (Gametogony) and produses zygot which mature to form oocysts. The oocysts are passed in faeces. The high moisture (exceeding 30%), immunosuppressive diseses and environmental and managemental stress lead to occurrence of disease. The birds affected with coccidiosis show depression, ruffled feathers, blood tinged diarrhoea and pale comb and wattle. Specific part of intestine is affected by each species of Eimeria. Diagnosis of coccidiosis is done by finding oocyst in faeces under microscope.

Introdcution

Poultry have a nervous system made up of the brain, spinal cord, sympathetic nerves that govern their viscera, and branches that go to their ears and eyes. The structure of the brain and spinal cord is very similar to that of mammals. However, there are also significant structural variations between many bird brains and many human brains, including the following:

1. Absence of cortex: According to Cobb (1960), the cortex is “a peripherally placed coating (pallium) of cells arranged in layers,” yet it is completely absent in birds. However, other authors have compared the hyperstriatum to the mammalian cortex (Haefelfinger, 1957; Stingelin, 1958).

2. Presence of hyperstriatum: The functions of the hyperstriatum are comparable to those of the mammalian cortex. In pigeons and chickens, the hyperstriatum may be involved in the visual and hearing systems’ functions.

3. Birds have highly developed optic lobes.

4. Turkeys and vultures are the only birds with a well-developed olfactory system.

Plant viruses are unusual group of plant pathogens that almost depend on host cellular machinery for their survival, hence categorized under obligate intracellular parasites. They are smart entities as they encode very few proteins but take the advantage of host cellular metabolism to complete their replication and movement within plants cells. These viruses passively enter the host cells through various means such as wounds and injury, environmental factors, or by several vectors. Genomic material, either RNA or DNA of viruses, disassembles inside the plant cells, and replicates and transcribes mRNA to protein with the help of host factors and energy. Once they manage to assemble their required genetic materials and capsid protein, virions are then released to neighboring cells for further infecting other cells. They even reach to distant cells through plant vascular system causing systemic infection and different symptoms in host plant.

1. Host-Pathogen Recognition

· Pathogen-Associated Molecular Patterns (PAMPs) Plants have receptors that can recognize conserved molecules on pathogens, called PAMPs (e.g., bacterial flagellin). This triggers a basal defense response called PAMP Triggered Immunity (PTI).

· Effector Proteins Pathogens secrete effector proteins into plant cells to suppress PTI and facilitate infection. Plants have evolved resistance (R) proteins that can recognize specific effector proteins, leading to a stronger defense response called Effector-Triggered Immunity (ETI).

2. Genesis of Interaction

· Entry Pathogens enter plants through natural openings (stomata, hydathodes) or wounds. Some can directly penetrate plant tissues using specialized structures or enzymes.

· Colonization Once inside, pathogens multiply and spread within plant tissues, often utilizing enzymes to break down cell walls and obtain nutrients.

· Manipulation of Host Pathogens manipulate host physiology through effector proteins, suppressing defense, and altering hormone signaling, and redirecting resources to support their growth.

Introduction

The physiological disorder of a mineral nutrient is entirely contingent upon its function within the plant body. Inadequate or excessive supply of any essential element can result in metabolic disruptions, influencing the activities of enzymes, rates of metabolic reactions, and concentrations of metabolites. Alongside alterations in metabolic patterns, severe deficiencies of specific essential elements also give rise to distinctive effects in leaves, stems, roots, blossoms, and fruits.

A. Nitrogen

Functions: Nitrogen is essential for plants, playing crucial roles in protein synthesis, nucleic acid formation, and chlorophyll synthesis. It is a key component of enzymes, contributing to various metabolic processes. Nitrogen also supports root development, cell structure, and the synthesis of secondary metabolites. Striking a balance in nitrogen levels is vital for maintaining plant health and ensuring optimal growth and productivity. Effective nitrogen management is essential for sustainable agriculture and overall ecosystem well-being.

Livestock is considered one of the essential variables in the revenue of a farmer. The sector (excluding fisheries) contributes 30 per cent to India’s agriculture gross domestic product, and it is valued at more than Rs. 9 lakh crores. India is also one of the largest producers of milk in the world; around 70 million rural households are engaged in professions linked to dairy. India is also the second largest exporter of bovine meat after Brazil. This sector provides a substantial income to farmers and supports the economy by generating enough demand in the rural and semi-urban regions. This animal husbandry sector comprising dairy and poultry is extremely valuable for farmer’s income security, and Covid-19 has the potential to disrupt this sector.

In developing countries such as India, where dairy farming is one of the most important sources of livelihood for 60 million rural households, 80 per cent of whom are landless, small and marginal farmers who depend on dairy for daily income, the crisis is extreme. Thus, even a small decline in the growth of the dairy sector significantly affects a large chunk of our population which are already vulnerable due to low income, poor savings, and lack of livelihood alternatives. Small production in multiple households leads to more reliance on efficient transportation for procurement. In addition to this, the Indian dairy sector is still dominated by the unorganized sector which handles more than 50 per cent of the marketable surplus. Milkman and vendors collect a small quantity of loose milk from different households and then supply it to urban consumers, roadside eateries, hotels, and sweetshops. Closure of shops and restrictions on transportation has ruthlessly disturbed this arrangement. Even in the formal sector out of the total milk processed 65 to 70 per cent is sold as liquid milk which is immediately vended after packing and only 30 per cent is processed into other dairy products like ghee, butter, cheese, curd, ice-cream, milk powder, etc. Thus, the formal sector also lacks sufficient infrastructure and storage facilities for processing and storing surplus milk after value addition.

7.1. Challenges in Milk Quality

Demand for milk and milk products in India is growing very rapidly, owing to urbanization, customer convenience, and the change from loose to packaged milk products. At present, the dairy sector is rising at about 10-12 per cent annually. Based on population growth projections and an increase in urbanization over the next four decades, India is projected to need approximately 600 million tonnes of milk per year to meet the demand for milk and milk products. This means that India’s milk production needs to grow at around 3.2 per cent CAGR for the next 40 years (FICCI, 2020).

Main reason of poor quantity of milk is due to unhygienic and poor condition of animal farms and dairies. Even due to high demand in foreign country we cannot export such poor quality of milk product. Many times, Indian milk products get rejected in foreign nations due to unhygienic milking milk contains high number of microbial counts. Reasons behind the quality affected in India are due to poor health of animal, polluted water and food and Unclean surrounding in farm. So, it is necessary to consider all this challenges in improving milk production. Currently most of the milking animals are not screened on regular interval of time. So, there is lots of chances that some diseases can transmitted to human beings. Farmers use antibiotics and chemical drugs to increase the production of milk this will also affect the quality of milk. These issues can be avoided by regular screening of animals in animal husbandry and also maintaining history records of health, feed etc. Quality of feed should be checked regularly. There must be pollution control in the feed and water used in cattle farms (Bhagyalaxmi, 2020).

In the nursery seedlings, saplings, cuttings and grafts are raised, propagated and multiplied under favorable condition for transplanting in the main field. In nursery, plants are nurtured by providing them with optimum growing condition to ensure germination.

Benefits of Raising Seedlings in Nursery

1. Tender seedlings are looked after very conveniently.

2. Seedlings canbe protected very easliy from pests and diseases.

3. Land can be properly utilised (duration in the main field is reduced).

4. Costly and small size seeds can be raised effeciently without any wastage.

5. Uniformity in the crop can be be maintained by selecting healthy, uniform and vigorous seedlings from the nursery.

Environmental concerns have brought nutrient management in floriculture under increased scrutiny. A goal of sound nutrient management is to maximize the proportion of applied nutrients that is used by the crop (nutrient use efficiency). Soil sampling is a best management practice (BMP) for fertilizer management that will help improve nutrient use efficiency and protect the environment. Soil sampling is also one of the most important steps in a sound crop fertilization program. Poor soil sampling procedures account for more than 90 percent of all errors in fertilizer recommendations based on soil tests. Soil test results are only as good as the soil sample. Once you take a good sample, you must also handle it properly for it to remain a good sample. A good soil testing program can be divided into four Operations: (1) taking the sample, (2) analyzing the sample, (3) interpreting the sample analyses and (4) making the fertilizer recommendations. This chapter focuses on the first step, collecting the soil sample, once you take a sample, you must send it to a laboratory for analysis.

The global demand for flowers and ornamental plants is rising, driven by increasing consumer preferences for natural beauty, aesthetic enhancement of personal and public spaces and the growing cultural significance of flowers in events and celebrations. This chapter explores the diverse ways and avenues through which floriculture can generate profit, emphasizing the use of flowers and their byproducts to enhance economic stability and improve the quality of life for farmers. By examining market potential, technological advancements, value addition and sustainable practices, this chapter aims to highlight how f loriculture can significantly contribute to livelihood security. In India,the f loriculture industry is identified for growing traditional loose flowers and cut flowers both under open field and protected environmental conditions, respectively. Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Mizoram, Gujarat and Andhra Pradesh are the leading states which grow loose flower where as West Bengal, Karnataka, Orissa, Jharkhand, Assam, Kerala and Andhra Pradesh are cut flower growing states. Floriculture sector is also the good source of generating higher income, profit and employment opportunities to the India’s youth, moreover, promoting involvement of women and enhancement of exports. India has now emerged as the second largest producer of flowers in the world. The country has exported 22,519 tonnes of floricultural products to the world in (2015-16). India’s total export of floriculture in 2015-16 was Rs. 479.42 crore. The major importing countries were United States, Netherlands, Germany, United Kingdom, United Arab Emirates, Japan and Canada.

Microbes play a crucial role in floriculture by enhancing plant health, growth and resilience. Beneficial microbes such as bacteria, fungi and mycorrhizae, form symbiotic relationships with plants, aiding in nutrient uptake and improving soil structure. These microorganisms decompose organic matter releasing essential nutrients like nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium which are vital for flower development. They also produce growth-promoting substances such as hormones and enzymes, stimulating root and shoot growth. Moreover, certain microbes act as biological control agents, protecting plants from pathogens and pests by outcompeting harmful organisms or producing antimicrobial compounds. The use of microbial inoculants and biofertilizers in floriculture can reduce the need for chemical fertilizers and pesticides, promoting sustainable and eco-friendly practices. By fostering a healthy microbial community in the soil, floriculturists can enhance the aesthetic quality, color and longevity of flowers, contributing to the overall success and sustainability of the floriculture industry.Different microbes can be used for the floriculture has been discussed.

In India, Floriculture is one of the ancient farming activity having great potential for generating employment to the small and marginal farmers. In the Indian flower market the domestic demand is up-surging at a rate of over 25% and the global cut flower market is approximately to be valued at USD 36.4 billion in 2022 but the share of India in international market of flowers is very less. Floriculture industry in India is still in the infancy stage and facing many problems. These issues are discussed in detail as below.

Technological Issues

Lack of improved new variety or cultivars. There are very few commercially available varieties released and available in our country with export potential. The thrust in floricultural research till recently had been on crop improvement, which include standardization of agro-technology improved method of propagation, pest and diseases control and post harvest management. The major nurseries of our country still depend on developed countries like Europe for internationally acceptable variety of major flowers. To achieve sustainability, there is intense need of breeding research programme specifically on floriculture to release new varieties with export potential of major commercially important f lowers.

Introduction

Soil health and fertility are pivotal to the success and sustainability of agricultural systems. The condition of soil directly influences plant growth, crop yield, and overall farm productivity. A focus on soil health encompasses not just the physical and chemical properties of soil but also its biological vitality, which includes the diverse community of microorganisms, fungi, and fauna that interact within the soil ecosystem. Biodynamic farming, founded by Rudolf Steiner in the early 20th century, offers a distinctive approach to soil health and fertility, integrating organic principles with a holistic view of agriculture that encompasses cosmic and spiritual dimensions. Biodynamic farming is an agricultural philosophy that extends beyond conventional organic practices. It views the farm as a living organism, where soil, plants, animals, and cosmic forces are interconnected and interdependent. This perspective emphasizes that the health of the soil is intrinsically linked to the broader ecological and cosmic environment. According to biodynamic principles, soil fertility is not merely a function of nutrient inputs but a reflection of the overall balance and vitality of the farm ecosystem.

Millets are an essential food in the world’s semi-arid and arid regions. These are effective energy providers. They provide dietary fibre, polyphenols, fatty acids, minerals, vitamins and protein. The production of tropical crops is highly risky due to the pest outbreaks and increased abiotic pressures triggered by the climate change. Despite the fact that conventional breeding methods have greatly enhanced crop yield and output, new strategies are needed to further enhance crop productivity in order to fulfil the world’s expanding need for the food. The use of site-specific nucleases like zinc finger nuclease (ZFN), transcription activator-like effector nuclease (TALEN) and clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeat associated proteins 9 (CRISPR-Cas9) are the genome editing technologies developing very fast. The advancement of plant genome research and its use in plant breeding are significantly aided by such achievements. CRISPR/Cas9 and related genome editing methods are emerging as appropriate methods to reduce the negative consequences of climate change and assure the long-term food security of tropical countries’ growing populations.

Goats are the backbone of the Indian rural economy as it helps in sustaining the livelihood of rural poor in difficult terrains. The value output from the sheep and goat meat sector has been worth Rs123177 crores during 2020 2021 (Central Statistical Organisation, GoI ). India has diverse small ruminant genetic resources with 44 sheep and 37 goat breeds registered with the ICAR National Bureau of Animal Genetic Resources, Karnal. The goat population has colossally increased by 215% (47.2 vs 148.9 million) from 1951 to 2019. Of late, the last two censuses revealed that the goat population in the country increased by 10.1% (135.17 to 148.88 million). The goats are 27.8% of the total livestock population in the country. Their contribution to total meat production is 13.63%. The goat and sheep contributed 1467 million kg of meat in 2021-22 (BAHS, 2022). Goat meat is increasing and is mostly preferred in North and Western India. Meat consumption in India is showing an upward trend but still, there is a lot of scope for improvement in per capita availability. The global Covid-19 pandemic altered the food preferences of the consumer with more demand for safe foods produced under the natural system. The organic food production system may be aptly suited and has potential to meet out demands of consumers. This change in the consumer attitude is gradually increasing the scope and opening more avenues for organic food production and marketing. Food safety legislation in different countries is also working towards improving the safety standards of food and, at the same time, consumers are increasingly willing to pay for quality foods as their disposable incomes rise.

Mathura, Uttar Pradesh Livestock plays a crucial role in agriculture and rural economies, affecting livelihoods, food security, public health, and economic development. The Gross Value Added (GVA)of livestock sector is about Rs. 11,14,249 crore at current prices during FY 2020-21 which is about 30.87%of Agricultural and Allied Sector GVA and 6.17%of Total GVA. At constant prices (2011-12), the GVA of livestock sector is about Rs. 6,17,117crore during FY2020-21with a positive growth of 6.13% over previous financial year (DAHD, 2022).Livestock contributed 16% to the income of small farm households that indicates importance of livestock sector as a whole. Despite the presence of limited land and water resources, India has the world’s largest livestock population accounting for over 35.94% of cattle, 20.45% of buffalo, 26.40% of goats and 12.17% of sheep of the world’s population. The goat population in the country was 148.88 million in 2019, increased by 10.1% over previous census BAHS, 2012 (DAHD, 2019).In India the goat sector contributes 8.4 percent to the Indian livestock GDP that is 1,16,400 crores through meat Rs64,000 crores, through milk 22000 crores, through skin Rs3345 crores, through manure Rs2535 crores, and others Rs4360 crores. India rank f irst in goat population and possessregistered37 goat breedsin different agro climatic zones.Goats (Capra hircus) are one of the oldest domesticated species and it provides meat (Chevon), milk, yoghurt, cheese and other by-products such as hair and skin. Goats rearing provide much needed livelihood support to the landless and weaker sections and also hold considerable potential for commercializationas well as provide job opportunities in rural India.

The livestock sector is a pillar of the global food system and a contributor to poverty reduction, food security and agricultural development. Livestock play a major role in sustainable food systems—for example, manure is a critical source of natural fertilizer, while livestock used as draft animals can help boost productivity in regions where there is low mechanization. Livestock are important assets for vulnerable communities.

Natural Animal Farming

Government of India is promoting natural farming, through National Mission on Natural Farming (NMNF) and organic farming through ParamparagatKrishiVikasYojna (PKVY) and Mission Organic Value Chain Development for North Eastern Region (MOVCDNER).On the initiative of NITI Ayog, Natural Farming defined as is a chemical-free traditional farming method. It is considered as an agroecology based diversified farming system which integrates crops, trees and livestock with functional biodiversity. Natural farming is a system where the laws of nature are applied to agricultural practices. This method works along with the natural biodiversity of each farmed area, encouraging the complexity of living organisms, both plants, and animals that shape each particular ecosystem to thrive along with food plants. Natural Farming builds on natural or ecological processes that exist in or around farms. Several studies have reported the effectiveness of natural farming in terms of increase in production, sustainability, saving of water use, improvement in soil health and farmland ecosystem. It is considered as a cost- effective farming practices with scope for raising employment and rural development.

Goat is considered as KAMDHENU of small and marginal farmers in India. Agroforestry plays a very important role in three phase goat production system for the demand for natural/organic livestock product. Three phase goat production system i.e. extensive system, semi-intensive system and intensive system are very much supported by agroforestry systems. Goat farming contributes significantly to the family economy, sustainable livelihoods and poverty.

Agroforestry is a collective name for land-use systems and technologies where woody perennials (trees, shrubs, palms, bamboos, etc.) are deliberately used on the same land-management units as agricultural crops and/or animals, in some form of spatial arrangement or temporal sequence. In agroforestry systems there are both ecological and economical interactions between the different components. Agroforestry can also be defined as a dynamic, ecologically based, natural resource management system that, through the integration of trees on farms and in the agricultural landscape, diversifies and sustains production for increased social, economic and environmental benefits for land users at all levels. In particular, agroforestry is crucial to smallholder farmers and other rural people because it can enhance their food supply, income and health. Agroforestry systems are multifunctional systems that can provide a wide range of economic, sociocultural, and environmental benefits. (FAO, 2015)

The livelihood in rural India mainly depends on agriculture in the form of various land-based enterprises like crop farming, livestock rearing etc. But the landless people in the villages depend mainly on agricultural wages. These landless rural resource poor possess own labour as the only abundant factor which is free to them and they try to use it to its maximum for their survival and thus concentrate on animal husbandry. Goats are kept as a source of additional income and as an insurance against income shocks of crop failure. In addition, the rural poor who cannot afford to maintain a cow or a buffalo find goat as the best alternative source of supplementary income and milk. Goats represent a more liquid form of capital than cattle and are readily tradable, hence goats are called as “poor man’s cow” in Indiabecause it will produce milk, meat and manure like cow at very low costs.Goats are also perceived to be a less risky to invest into compared to sheep. Goat rearing has significant effect in augmenting farmers’ income. Goats preferentially select plant parts that are higher in digestibility when stocking density is low. Tolerance of goats toward bitterness may play an important role in maximizing grazing capacity and in biological control of weeds. Goats will sustain and produce well under low fodder, low water and extreme adverse climate and it will produce well in terms of milk, meat, manure and hide. Goats are docile, good tempered, cooperative animals easy to rear by women, land less labour and children and they will thrive well on shrubs, bushes and kitchen waste. They are known as moving ATM because they will provide financial assistance to farmer thought the year in all situations.

India’s indigenous poultry breeds play a crucial role in rural livelihoods, providing a sustainable source of nutrition and income. These native breeds are well-adapted to the local environmental conditions, demonstrating remarkable resilience and disease resistance. Despite their lower production potential compared to commercial breeds, their economic value and cultural significance make them indispensable in the rural context.

Indigenous Fowls of India

• India has a population of 217.80 million indigenous (Desi) chickens, representing 25.57% of the total poultry population (851.81 million) in India (BAHS, 2023, GOI).

• A total of 20 indigenous chicken breeds, 3 duck breeds, and 1 geese breed have been registered under the ICAR-National Bureau of Animal Genetics Resources (NBAGR) to date (Table 4.1 & 4.2).
