Sprayer is a machine to apply fluids in the form of droplets. Sprayer is used for the following purpose.

• Application of herbicides to remove weeds.
• Application of fungicides to minimize fungus diseases.
• Application of insecticides to control insect pests.
• Application of micro nutrients on the plants.

Introduction

Safety measures for pesticide use are emphasized to protect both human health and the environment. What is natural pest and disease control?

Pests and diseases are part of the natural environmental system. In this system there is a balance between predators and pests. This is nature’s way of controlling populations. The creatures that we call pests and the organisms that cause disease only become ‘pest and diseases’ when their activities start to damage crops and affect yields.

If the natural environmental system is imbalanced then one population can become dominant because it is not being preyed upon. The aim of natural control is to restore a balance between pest and predator and to keep pests and diseases down to an acceptable level. The aim is not to eradicate them altogether, as they also have a role to play in the natural system.

Once a pest or disease has started to attack a crop, the damage cannot be repaired and control becomes increasingly difficult. Where possible, use techniques to avoid or prevent pest and disease attack in the first place.

1.1. Plant Quarantine

The literary meaning of the word quarantine is” a state, period or place of isolation in which the people or animals or plants or acquacultures that have arrived from elsewhere or been exposed to infectious or contagious disease are placed.

Plant quarantine is a technique of keeping the imported or introduced plants or planting material in isolation for detecting the exotic pests, diseases and disease pathogens and weeds which may be harmful to the importing country for its crop plants, agriculture or the ecosystem. These plants/planting material are kept in isolation for a specified period which differ from plant species to plant species depending on the type of pathogen/pests for which the material has to be quarantine. This is based on the Rules and regulations promulgated by governments to regulate the introduction of plants, planting materials, plant products, soil, living organisms, etc. with a view to prevent inadvertent introduction of exotic pests, weeds and pathogens harmful to the agriculture or the environment of a country/region, and if introduced, to prevent their establishment and further spread. Plant quarantine is thus designed as a safeguard against harmful pest /pathogens exotic to a country or a region.

Plant quarantine is a most important activity in the introduction of plants and planting material as various insects, including mites and nematodes and diseases caused by fungi, bacteria, viruses, viroids, phytoplasmas,rickettsialike organisms are known to attack various crops of economic importance to not only reduce the quantity but also spoil the quality of the produce to a considerable extent and if these pests and pathogens are introduced with the planting material in its non ecosystem areas may prove fatal to the agriculture or ecosystem

Introduction

The challenge for all disciplines of agriculture is to increases production and improves quality of agricultural produce. This is applicable to the discipline of plant protection and manage risk. In the past many pathogens are responsible for food scarcities including famines. In addition to endemic problems there are many crop pests which are entered India from other foreign countries because in India did not have an effective control measure (plant quarantine) system to stop the introduction of exotic pests, diseases and weeds. Cottony cushion scale, woolly aphid, San Jose scale, golden cyst nematode of potatoes are some exotic pests introduced into our country and cause extensive damage.

Plant quarantine is a government endeavor enforced through legislative measures to regulate the introduction of planting materials, plant products, soil, living organisms, etc., in order to prevent inadvertent introduction of insect-pests, pathogens and weeds harmful for the agriculture of a country/state/region, and if introduced, prevent their establishment and further spread. Various methods of pest disease control are: exclusion, eradication, protection, therapy, resistance, and biological control. Exclusion or ‘keeping out’ is fundamental to the concept of plant quarantine while eradication methods are employed to eliminate a newly established pest/pathogen. Plant quarantine may, therefore, be defined as ‘Rules and regulations promulgated by governments to regulate the introduction of plants, planting materials, plant products, soil living organisms, etc. with a view to prevent inadvertent introduction of exotic pests, weeds and pathogens harmful to the agriculture or the environment of a country/region, and if introduced, to prevent their establishment and further spread’. Plant quarantine is designed as a safeguard against harmful pests/pathogens exotic to a country or a region (Ram Nath, 1991, Khetrapal et al., 2004).

9.1. Plant quarantine

Legal restriction of movement of plant materials between countries and between states within the country to prevent or limit introduction and spread of pests and diseases in areas where they do not exist.

Plant quarantine regulatory measures are operative through the Destructive Insects & Pests Act, 1914 (Act 2 of 1914) in the country.

1. Biosecurity

Biosecurity is strategic and integrated approach encompasses policy frameworks to analyze and manage risks for food safety, animal life and health and plant life and health including environment.

ABSTRACT

Young buds of ginger (Zingiber officinale Rosc.) were isolated and cultured on MS media with BA 3 mg l^-1 induced shoot organogenesis. Young buds from aseptically grown cultures were evaluated for the effectiveness on embryogenic callus production on different concentration of auxin in combination with cytokinin. Among the plant growth hormones tested a combination of 2, 4-D 1 mg l^-1 and BA 0.5 mg l^-1 was most effective in inducing and maintaining embryogenic cultures. The somatic embryo germinated on half strength MS medium supplemented with 3 per cent w/v sucrose and 3 mg l^-1 BA.

ABSTRACT

Protoplast isolation in orchids is considered to be a valuable tool for introduction of desirable traits through somatic cell fusion. The present work on the protoplast in Dendrobium var.sonia is undertaken with a view to standardize protocol for isolation and regeneration. Tender leaf mesophyll tissues of one-month-old Dendrobium var.sonia were used as explant for protoplast isolation. The leaf tissues were treated with enzyme mixture of cellulase 1per cent (Onozuka -R from Trichoderma viride) and macerase 0.25per cent (from Aspergillus niger) for 16 hours. Protoplast from the Dendrobium var. sonia was successfully isolated and regeneration of shoots and roots were obtained in MS medium containing BA 5mg l^-1+NAA 1mg l^-1.The plantlets were hardened in a span of five months.

ABSTRACT

Wetlands play an important role in provisioning of numerous goods and services for mankind. However, the type and the quantum of ecological services differs amongst wetlands. In the present study, we documented the various plant resources used by the riparian communities of two well-recognized wetlands, Dhir beel and Diplai beel, located in Brahmaputra Valley of Assam. The findings of study indicate that the riparian communities are dependent on wetlands for various purposes. The riparian communities uses 48 plant species as vegetables, fruits, fodder, fuel wood, medicine, roofing materials, craft making materials, bio-fertilizer and fish poisoning agent. Some of the plant species such as Enhydra fluctuans, Lasia spinosa, Colocasia esculenta, Diplazium esculentum, Ipomoea aquatica and Monocharia hastata aresold in the village market as local vegetables. The wetlands generate income for the riparian communities and save cashof many households settled plant near the wetland. Nevertheless, this study also revealed that some near the wetland resources are declining due to population pressure, encroachment near the wetlands, deforestation and over-exploitation of the wetland habitats for creation of many fishery ponds within the wetland and cultivation practices on wetland edges. The socio-economic condition, unemployment, easy accessibility and lack of alternativesources are plausibly themajor factors, whichare leading to the decline and depletion of the wetland resources. Therefore, appropriate management strategies are required for the conservation and the sustainable utilization of these plant resources.

The productivity of a crop is result of genetic make-up (heredity) and environment (climate) and their interaction. The components of crop environment or climate or microclimate are light, temperature, air compositions and the nature growing medium or soil. In open fields, only manipulation of nature of the soil or root medium by tillage, irrigation and fertilizer application is possible. Under greenhouse structure control of any one or more of the components of the micro climate is manipulated.

Light

The visible light of the solar radiation is a source of energy for plants. Light energy, carbon dioxide (Co2) and water all enter in to the process of photosynthesis through which carbohydrates are formed. The production of carbohydrates from carbon dioxide and water in the presence of chlorophyll, using light energy is responsible for plant growth and reproduction. The rate of photosynthesis is governed by available fertilizer elements, water, carbon dioxide, light and temperature. The photosynthesis reaction can be represented as follows

For plant analysis to be meaningful, collection of particular plant part(tissue) at the right stage of growth is very important. A research worker in soil fertility is generally interested in finding out the nutrient uptake by crop at different stages. The stage at which nutrient uptake is to be studied will vary with different crops. One may also be interested in collecting a plant sample when some abnormality is observed in the plants and a nutrient deficiency or toxicity is suspected. In such cases no time should be lost in collecting the sample otherwise secondary reactions that often take place in the mineral content of plants will conceal the real cause of deficiency or toxicity. In such cases only the affected plants are to be sampled as compared to general sampling technique described below.

For research projects each plot receiving differential fertilizer or some other treatment is to be sampled separately. For general advisory purposes one sample would be good enough for the entire field (not exceeding 2 hectares). One should, however, take care that the sample comes from a field or a part there of having a uniform stand. If a field is patchy and differences in stand and plant growth are obvious, each such area should be sampled separately.

Introduction

Plant analysis can be defined as the quantitative determination of the concentration of an element or extractable fraction of an element in a sample from a particular part or portion of a crop. From the nutritional standpoint, plant analysis is based on the principle that the concentration of a nutrient within the plant is an integral value of all the factors that have interacted to it. Plant analysis is used as an index of available nutrient element supply. Plant growth or yield are compared with the elemental concentrations contained in the dry matter of the entire plant or plant structures such as leaves, petioles, fruit or grain sampled at different times during their development. Plant analysis gives the overall picture of the nutrient levels within the plant at the time the nutrient was taken. The use of plant analysis is based on the principle that the nutrient level present is as a result of all factors affecting the growth of the plant.

Plant analysis involves the determination of nutrient concentration in diagnostic plant part(s) sampled at recommended growth stage(s) of the crop. In a way plant analysis complements soil analysis. There are reliable sampling criteria and procedures for most of the world’s commercial crops.

Importance

Plant analysis assesses nutrient uptake while soil testing predicts nutrient availability. The two tests are complementary to each other as crop management tools. Plant analysis will detect unseen hidden hunger and confirm visual deficiency symptoms. Toxic levels may also be detected. If it is done early, plant analysis will allow a corrective fertilizer application in the same season.

Summary

Plant cell culture systems produce myriads of valuable compounds which cannot be synthesized by microbial cells or chemical synthesis. Many of the drugs sold today are simple synthetic modifications or copies of the naturally obtained substances. The burgeoning demand for secondary metabolites in recent years as therapeutic agent has resulted in a great interest, in secondary metabolism, and particularly in the possibility to alter the production of bioactive compounds using cell culture technology. Various strategies such as cell line selection, use of precursors and elicitors, mass culture in bioreactors and others have proved effective in enhancing the production of these metabolites so as to meet the market demand but space for improvement still exists. In order to stretch the boundary, recent advances, new directions and opportunities in plant cell based processes are being examined in this section.

Summary

Plant tissue culture is the technique of growing plant cells, tissues or organs in isolated from the mother plant on artificial media. It has opened up unprecedented opportunities in many areas of basic and applied biological research. This includes techniques and methods used to research into many botanical disciplines and has several practical objectives of plant tissue culture and micropropagation for sustainable development. Indeed, the landmark publication by Gottlieb Haberlandt who is arguably referred to as the “Father of Tissue Culture”, is often cited as the origin and emergence of plant tissue culture and its subsequent applications. Success of biotechnological approaches is dependent on regeneration of intact plants following genetic modification, generally by micropropagation. Potential uses of plant tissue culture in biotechnology to further our understanding of plant physiology, how plants function, resolution and expression of use full characters form in vitro to in vivo condition. Agro bacterium-mediated genetic transformation along with other modes of transformation such as microprojectile bombardment has been accomplished mainly through plant tissue culture.

Introduction

Among the various propagation techniques, plant propagation through tissue culture has gained immense importance over the years and for a few crops it has become the major method of propagation. Plant tissue culture can be defined as the ability to grow and maintain the plant organs viz., embryo, shoot, root, anther, flower and their respective tissue in a culture media. While micropropagation can be defined as the development of a new plant using plant tissue culture techniques. These plants are grown under in-vitro conditions, i.e., culturing the plant in a vessel (e.g., test tube) under a controlled condition. Since, the whole process is a lab-based work, there are chances of contamination, thus, the growing condition needs to be aseptic (growing without microbial contamination).

Media Preparation

Before mixing medium, determine the quantity of each medium and the amount of plant growth regulator needed for each experiment. Make slightly more medium than is required. A media check off list is helpful in making medium to keep track of ingredients.

Remove media stock solutions and plant growth regulator stock solutions to be used from the refrigerator. Make up fresh stock solutions if adequate quantities are not available or if solutions have precipitated.

Plant growth regulators stock solutions are prepared biweekly and stored at 4º C in the dark. Cytokinins (thidiazuron and BA) are dissolved in approximately KOH prior the addition of deionized water. Gibberellins and auxins (2,4-D, IBA and NAA) are dissolved in 100% ethanol prior the addition of water.

Fill the volumetric flasks upto ½ to ¾ with deionized water. Add proper a of stock solution and plant growth regulators and mark each item on the check off list. Add 30 g/l sucrose, stir until dissolved. Make up the volume of the flask with deionized water and later por into a larger beaker.

Introduction

One of the biggest problems emerging for the survival of the people in the future is food security. To feed an anticipated nine billion people by 2050, the globe would need to produce roughly twice as much food as it does today. In order to properly accomplish this aim, food production must be elevated sustainably on currently available arable land while addressing the problems brought on by climate change. Over the past five decades, crop yields have steadily increased due to crop breeding programs and better management practices. The rate of yield improvement has, however, reached a plateau (Grassini et al. 2013). The noncompounding yearly yield growth of 0.9% for wheat at the present time, world output rises by 38%, is quite small, and is unable to fulfill expected demand levels by 2050. Therefore, the most beneficial course of action is to investigate more effective, higher-yielding crops (Ray et al. 2013).

Historically, the genetic improvement of wheat has been accomplished by sexual hybridization between related species, giving rise to a large number of cultivars with excellent agronomic performance and high yields. The main methodology for improving cereal crops is still traditional plant breeding, sometimes in combination with traditional cytogenetic methods (Salina et al. 2015). Cereal crops immediately became the top targets for genetic modification due to the worldwide importance of cereal grains in human diets. Over the past 10 years, wheat genetic technology for processing has advanced quickly.

Plant tissue culture is the cultivation of plant cells, tissues, or organs on specially formulated nutrients media under the right environmental conditions. A whole plant can be regenerated from a single cell. The history of plant tissue culture has been long and started with Haberlandt in 1902 when he proposed the culture of single plant cells, his experimentation never resulted in success. White (1943) became successful in culturing plant cells for the first time, however, Morel (1960) at the Institut National Recherche Agronomique in Versailles near Paris was first to demonstrate meristem culture technology. He successfully introduced tissue culture technology to the orchid industry and produced disease-free plants of grape. By the 1970s, plant tissue culture had become a formidable technology. Plant tissue culture technique has been around for more than 30 years and considered as an important straightforward technology for the production of disease-free high quality planting material and the rapid production of many uniform plants. Its application requires a sterile workplace, nursery, greenhouse and trained manpower.

Plant tissue culturing techniques have been especially important in the agricultural community over the past many years. During this time, plant tissue culture has effectively moved from the confines of small laboratories and has taken its place among broad scale techniques employed by agricultural industry.

Tissue culture is a technique used to culture cells, tissues, organs or whole plant under controlled environmental conditions that in vitro condition is known as plant tissue culture. Plant tissue culture exploits the totipotency nature of plant cells, ability to develop in to complete plantlet.

Introduction

Tissue culture refers to the technique of growing cells, tissues, or organs under controlled, artificial conditions. This allows propagation of tissues from a small sample of cells/tissues under sterile conditions. Plant tissue culture is widely used for various purposes, including the production of disease-free plants, rapid multiplication of plants with desirable traits, genetic modification, conservation of rare or endangered species, etc. Tissue culture is a valuable technique because it enables consistent and large-scale production of plants, ensures genetic uniformity, and allows manipulation of plant biology at cellular level. In this chapter, we will discuss about the major types of tissue culture techniques and their advantages, disadvantages, as well as applications in brief.

Different Types of Tissue Culture

Callus culture involves induction and growing of unorganized, undifferentiated cell masses from an explant on a nutrient/culture medium. The part of plant used to induce callus is called explant which can be tissue, organ or part of a plant.

Organ culture is used to maintain or grow an entire organ or a part of organ in vitro. It preserves the structure and function of the organ for studies or transplantation.

Embryo culture involves isolating and growing embryos from seeds or ovules in a nutrient medium. It is used to bypass seed dormancy or rescue embryos from hybrid crosses that may not develop naturally.

Cell suspension culture involves growing dispersed cells or small cell clusters in a liquid medium under continuous shaking. This is used for large-scale production of cells, secondary metabolites, and studying cell biology..

Introduction
The process of culturing plant cells, tissues, organs and protoplast on artificial media under controlled and aseptic circumstances is known as ‘Plant Tissue Culture’. It is predicated on the idea of “Cellular totipotency”, which describes a cell’s capacity to develop into a whole plant in the right cultural environment. This characteristic of cells has broad applications in the manipulation of plant cells to enable fast plant multiplication and the in-vitro regeneration of whole plants following the genetic transformation. Around a century ago, the idea of tissue culture was first put forth, to grow entire plants in vitro from somatic cells (Haberlandt, 1902). The tissue culture system has advanced with the identification of different concentration, ratios of auxin and cytokinin, which are critical for the regeneration of adventitious roots and shoots (Skoog and Miller, 1957). Appropriate explant, or plant organ removed, including cotyledons, leaves, roots, shoot apices, nodal segments, hypocotyls, anthers, embryos, and seeds. The explants are thoroughly cleaned with sterile double-distilled water, surface sterilized with a disinfectant such as sodium hypochlorite or mercuric chloride and aseptically cultured in an artificial medium in test tubes/ flasks, jars, and Petri dishes. Several factors influence a plant’s capacity to regenerate, such as the presence of a plant growth regulator (Gerdakaneh et al., 2020), the explant type (Dhar and Joshi, 2005) and the basic medium’s composition (Sundararajan et al., 2017).
The most widely used media include major elements, carbohydrates, growth regulators (auxins, cytokinins etc.), microelements, vitamins, amino acids and several media compositions have been created specifically for plant tissue culture (Atkinson et al. 2012). While 2,4-dichloro phenoxy acetic acid (2,4-D) at concentrations of 0.5-4.0 mg/L typically induces callus, or a homogeneous mass of undifferentiated cells, auxins at concentrations ranging from 0.1 to 5.0 mg/L, favour rooting by cell elongation. Similarly, cytokinin’s induce fast cell division and the growth of shoot buds/shoots. Agaragar, agarose, and GelriteTM are examples of chemically inert, powdered gelling agents added to the culture medium to solidify it before it is autoclaved. After the medium has been added to the culture containers, they are autoclaved. Explants in the culture vessels are injected under aseptic circumstances in a laminar air-flow cabinet equipped with high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filters (pore size 0.2–0.3 mm). Explants that are placed in the right growth medium under the right circumstances dedifferentiate, or mature cells that have increased DNA/ RNA and protein production return to their meristematic state. Regrowth in the agar-gelled medium results in an amorphous mass of cells known as ‘callus’. Suspension culture, a method of cultivating cells in a liquid medium, produces a suspension of individual cells. Every three to four weeks, the developing tissue must be sub-cultured onto a new medium because an increase in cells or calli causes the medium to run out. Meristematic Tissues

These are composed of cells that are in state of division or retain the power of dividing. These cells are essentially alike and isodiametric. They may be spherical, oval or polygonal and their walls thin and homogeneous; the protoplasm in them abundant and active with large nuclei, and the vacuoles small or absent.

Classification of Meristems

Meristems are classified in different ways on the basis of certain factors.

A) According to their origin and development

1. Promeristem or primordial meristem

2. Primary meristem and

3. Secondary meristem.

• It might be necessary to administer oxygen or perform artificial respiration. Giving tranquilizers is not a good idea.

• Precaution: It's crucial to always follow the label's instructions on how to use pesticides since they provide information on how to do so. Many plants contain chemicals that can be dangerous or even lethal to animals. The degree of toxicity varies based on the animal species, the quantity of plant material ingested, and the particular poisonous compounds in question. In general, there are two categories of dangerous plants: those that are known to be toxic and contain toxic compounds, and those that are normally non-toxic but can turn hazardous in certain circumstances. Here are some typical plant toxicities, along with information on managing toxicity and clinical signs.

5.1 Plant Breeder’s Rights (PBR) and Protection of Plant Varieties and Farmers’ Rights (PPV&FR) Act
5.1.1 Introduction
In the context of biotechnology and agricultural innovation, Plant Breeder’s Rights (PBRs) offer exclusive intellectual property protection to individuals or organizations that breed, develop, or discover new plant varieties. These rights ensure economic incentives for plant breeders while promoting innovation in seed development and agricultural productivity. In India, the unique and inclusive Protection of Plant Varieties and Farmers’ Rights Act (PPV&FR), 2001, balances breeders’ rights with recognition of farmers’ contributions, making it one of the most progressive legislations in the world.
5.1.2 Concept of Plant Breeder’s Rights (PBR)
Plant Breeder’s Rights refer to the exclusive rights granted to plant breeders to produce, sell, market, distribute, import or export their registered plant varieties. These rights are sui generis, meaning they are a special form of IP distinct from patents, developed to cater specifically to plant varieties.

• Ensure access to improved crop varieties.
• Prevent unauthorized commercial exploitation of novel varieties.
• Facilitate biodiversity conservation through formal registration systems.

The International Union for the Protection of New Varieties of Plants (UPOV) based in Geneva, Switzerland and established in 1961 is an intergovernmental organization to provide and promote an effective system of plant variety protection, with the aim of encouraging the development of new varieties of plants, for the benefit of society. For plant breeders' rights to be granted, the new variety must meet four criteria under the rules established by UPOV as discussed earlier also.

1. Introduction

Viruses are a unique group of infectious agents. They are distinct in their simple, acellular organization; however, they are the connecting link between live and dead. Viruses are also the perfect example of obligate intracellular parasitism. Despite their simplicity, plant viruses are extremely important and drawn attention of researches because they can be used as model to study the disease establishment and progression mechanism, reproduction inside the host and trilateral host-virus-vector relationships. Their small genome also gave liberty to extensively understand the genome evolution caused by the genetic exchange or recombination. As a consequence, this will help in the development of facile methods for management and control of new emerging viruses and their strains.

This chapter is written for the beginners and students of virology subject to provide the fundamental knowledge about the origin, history of plant virology, the general features of plant viruses, their structure, shape and size, mode of spread and development of their management strategies. Besides this, the new development of non-conventional methods for developing virus-resistance in plants has also been explained for enhancing the quality and production of commercial crops in the country.

Plant–water relations concern how plants control the hydration of their cells, including the collection of water from the soil, its transport within the plant and its loss by evaporation from the leaves. Flow of water through plant and soil over macroscopic distances is driven by gradients in hydrostatic pressure. Over microscopic distances it is driven by gradients in water potential. Evaporation of water from leaves is primarily controlled by stomata, and if not made good by the flow of water from soil through the plant to the leaves, results in the plants wilting. Plant water deficit is initiated as the crop demand for water exceeds the supply. The capacity of plants to meet the demand and thus avoid water deficit depends on their “hydraulic machinery.” This machinery involves firstly the reduction of net radiation by canopy albedo, thus reflecting part of the energy load on the plant. Secondly, it determines the ability to transport sufficient amount of water from the soil to the atmosphere via the stomata in order to provide for transpiration, transpirational cooling and carbon assimilation. Water is transported by way the soil-plant-atmosphere continuum and it is largely controlled by the resistances in the continuum as determined by root, stem, leaf, stomata and cuticular hydraulic resistances. The gross effects of deficient and of excessive soil moisture on plant growth are well known, but controversy has existed for many years around the question whether the so-called “‘available moisture” is equally available for plant growth or available only with such increasing difficulty that plant growth functions are retarded before the wilting point is reached. Various measurable aspects of plant growth do not respond in the same manner to increasing moisture stress. Crops will respond to irrigations, although measured soil moisture stress is quite low. Problems of relating plant growth to soil moisture stress conditions varying with both time and soil depth are considered. Soil factors affecting density or depth are reviewed and several ways weather factors influence soil, -moisture-plant-growth relations summarized.

INTRODUCTION

The purpose of writing this chapter is to develop a comprehensive understanding of the role of functions of water in plant growth and development. Water is essential to life on earth as the living organisms contain 80-90 per cent water. A typical crop or grassland will transpire approximately 500 ml of water per 10 g of dry matter produced. Water has a tremendous effect on the environment near the earth, which on regional basis we call ‘climate’. Ecological importance of water is due to its physiological importance because water affects the plant growth through physiological processes. All metabolic activities in the plant cell or tissue depend on water status of the plant. For example, in a maturing seed, respiration rate is highest as it moves towards maturation stage, water content decreases and hence rate of respiration slow down. At the harvesting stage, when the water content is 10-20%, the respiration rates become negligible. Now in a stored seed if the water content will be high it will result into higher respiration, thus release energy, which will increase the temperature and will finally destroy the seed.

A novel approach to immunisation is edible vaccines that work by using plants as bio factories to create immunogenic proteins that, when ingested, can provide immunity. The idea is to genetically modify plants such that they express genes that code for pathogen proteins or antigens. Then, because they stimulate the synthesis of vaccine components within their tissues, these genetically engineered plants serve as vaccine delivery vehicles. The hepatitis B vaccination served as the model for immunogenicity in humans in the early research on edible vaccines.

The significance of Plant Genetic Resources (PGR’s) is on top of agenda of all those who are concerned with food, nutritional and environmental security by using the Earth’s plant - biodiversity judiciously in a vital form. Agro-biodiversity is the backbone of a nation’s food security and the basis of economic development as a whole. The top-down system of agricultural research, where farmers are seen merely as recipients of research rather than as participants in it, has contributed to an increased dependence on a relatively few plant varieties. Global cooperation from farmers to agricultural scientist is critical for maintaining the balance across the agricultural landscape. Over the years this diversity in India is under pressure due to the massive commercialization of agriculture leading to the almost extinction of traditional farming systems and plant- biodiversity is under immediate threat. Behind this commercialization there lies the interest of the breeders for obtaining intellectual property rights. Around 1.6 billion people depend on farm-saved seed, yet up to 75 per cent of varieties of some key crops have already been lost this century. The rate of loss may well increase as global trade rules, intellectual property rights regimes, the concentration of agricultural research and development on inappropriate technological‘solutions’, and now the introduction and promotion of genetically engineered products, all combine to erode local resources from the fields of smallholder farmers. At the moment, it should call for a balancing on research into modern biotechnology, in favour of a redirection of research and development resources into sustainable, environmentally-friendly technologies that, sustain poor people’s livelihoods, agricultural biodiversity and agro-ecosystem functions. In this context, the importance of farmer-derived Agricultural Biodiversity that includes the variety and variability of plants and micro-organisms which are necessary to maintain the structure, processes and key functions of the agricultural ecosystem for, and in support of, food production and food security.

Abstract

The nutrition of tobacco plants relies upon the plant genotypic variation and soil characteristics which also influence the various microflora that inhabit the rhizosphere. The investigations were aimed to analyze the role of native and inoculated plant growth promoting bacteria on the uptake of major plant nutrients viz., nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium and also their supportive nature in reducing the infection caused by  Pythium aphanidermatum, the damping-off fungus of tobacco in nursery. Rhizosphere microorganisms include PGPR viz., Azotobacter, Azospirillum, Pseudomonas and Bacillus, AM fungi and Streptomyces. The addition of these microbes as bioinoculants in tobacco integrated nutrient and disease management resulted in better quality tobacco worth premium price.

Our understanding of plant–nematode interactions has increased significantly. The f irst genome sequences of two root-knot nematodes species, M? incognita and M? hapla, have been described, which were significantly different from genome of the free-living nematode, Caenorhabditis elegans. Both M? incognita and M? hapla have definite set of proteins that determine the virulence in plant species. The secretomes (set of secreted proteins through the stylets) of different phytonematodes have demonstrated a number of effector proteins that are involved in compatible plant nematode interactions (Ali et?al., 2017). In response to infection of various nematodes, plant’s transcriptome resulted in increased metabolic activity in the feeding cells and suppression of defense mechanisms of the plants in most of the cases. Most of these studies revealed considerable progress toward an understanding of plant–nematode interactions under natural conditions.

Coconut, cocoa (cacao), coffee, cashew, cardamom, black pepper, tea, rubber, oil palm and areca nut are the major plantation crops that are perennially grown along the coastal belt in southern States of the Country and to some extent in high rainfall zones of the northeastern States of India. These crops are also known as perennial crops. The life span of these crops varies from fifteen to sixty years or more depending upon the crop and its management. Coconut and cashew are also popularly known as the coastal trees. Cardamom and black pepper are also known as the spice crops. Once these plantation crops are well established, they mature for fruiting in three to eight years depending upon the nature of plantation crops and the crop management. The reproductive phase is seen round-the-year in case of coconut and cocoa. Cashew is one of the plantation crops with seasonality in fruiting from September to June. Cocoa is mostly grown as an intercrop in coconut gardens and in some pockets as a pure crop. Black pepper is trained to coconut and areca nut in many locations and seen as mono crop as well. All these crops are grown in laterite, sandy and alike in well drained soils. The hill slopes with terrace cultivation are also suitable for all the plantation crops. Tea, coffee and cardamom are seen on hillocks extending up to the base. Some of the plantation crops are seen in multitier cropping system as well as mixed/intercrops/homestead gardens. They are grown mostly under the rain fed and summer irrigation is beneficial for better harvest. The plantation crop distribution, production and productivity are influenced by air temperature, rainfall and the other meteorological variables viz. sunshine, cloud cover, solar radiation, vapour pressure, evapotranspiration, humidity and wind. Interestingly, coffee spread in Wayanad District while cardamom in Idukki District. Coffee experiences unimodel rainfall while bimodal in the case of cardamom.

Introduction

Plantation crops are high value industrial crops with great economic importance and play vital role in trade. It contributes to environment protection and sustains a large number of agrobased industries. It has great potential for utilization of waste lands in varied agro-ecosystems like rainfed, dryland, hilly, arid and coastal, providing higher employment opportunities, nutritional security, eco-friendly, high potential for foreign exchange earnings and above all providing livelihood security to people. They contribute 25% of AGDP. Major plantation crops grown in India are coconut,cardamom,cinchona, arecanut, oilpalm, cashew, palmyra, rubber, cocoa, tea and coffee. These crops grown between 20° N and 20° S of equator occupy nearly 3.2 million ha with a production of 9.8 million tonnes. All these crops are perennial in nature and demand  labour round the year. All plantation crops enter international trade and all of them have a long juvenile period. Coconut, arecanut and cashew are cultivated by individual land  owners who are not organized to the same extent as  planters of tea, coffee and rubber.

Coconut is the most important palm of the wet tropics as a  major source of vegetable oil which also provides food, health drink, medicine, shelter, fuel, timber and fibre.  Because of its versatile nature, it is eulogised as ’Tree of Heaven’, ‘Tree of Life’, Kalpavriksha, Tree of Abundance, Natures supermarket and king of palms.  Oil is extracted from dried endosperm  which is called ‘copra’. The unopened flowering spathe, on tapping process, yields a delicious sap (Coconut Inflorescence Sap) rich in sugars and vitamin B, is called toddy from which sugar syrup and many products can be extracted.  An intoxicating drink called arrack can be prepared by distilling fermented toddy. The hard endocarps of fruits supply fuel and charcoal and mesocarp yields fibre for coir industry. Leaves are used for thatching houses.  Young unopened leaves are used to decorate festive places.

These crops are cultivated in an extensive scale in large contiguous areas, owned and managed by an individual or a company and whose produce is utilized only after processing e.g. Coffee, Tea, Rubber, Coconut, Cocoa, etc.

Purpose: It is important that the plants occupy the same position where the pegs were placed in the field. At the time of planting the tree the peg is removed first followed by pit making to receive the plant. The plant may be with the ball of earth or without the ball of earth. While planting the tree in the pit there is every possibility that plant may not occupy the same position where the pegs were originally placed. In order to overcome this problem planting board is used. Use of a planting board ensures the planting of the plant in the correct position.

Biodynamic farming is a holistic agricultural approach that integrates celestial rhythms, including lunar phases and astrological cycles, into farming practices to enhance soil health, plant growth, and farm productivity. Central to this practice are planting calendars and guides, which help farmers align their activities with cosmic rhythms. Additionally, cropping systems in biodynamic farming are designed to optimize resource use, improve soil fertility, and promote ecological balance. This article explores the principles and practical applications of planting calendars and guides in biodynamic farming, examines various cropping systems employed in biodynamic agriculture, and discusses their impact on farm management and sustainability. By understanding these elements, farmers can effectively incorporate biodynamic practices into their agricultural systems, contributing to more resilient and productive farming operations.

Guava planting has historically followed a 5 m × 5 m or 6 m x 6 m spacing, providing 278 to 400 plants per hectare in a square planting pattern. Growth, productivity, fruit quality, and leaf nutritional content are just a few of the management characteristics of guava orchards that are greatly impacted by this traditional spacing method. CISH, Lucknow, has recently launched a novel meadow orchard system that comprises growing guava at a greater density of 5000 plants per hectare with a spacing of 2.0 x 1.0 metres. Regular topping and hedging techniques are used in this innovative approach, especially in the early phases of orchard development. Techniques for topping and hedging are essential for regulating tree size and increasing fruit supply. By using strategic management techniques to maximise tree size and fruit output, this meadow orchard system offers a more intense approach to guava cultivation than standard planting methods. It also provides improved plant density. This method’s introduction is a reflection of continuous attempts to improve guava growing methods and adjust to changing agricultural practises.
9.1 Low Density Planting
When planting guava, low-density planting differs from traditional or higher-density planting in that the guava plants are spaced widely apart and accommodates about 100-250 plants/ha. According to several studies, this strategy has a number of benefits that are essential for the best possible orchard management and acquires commercial production potential after 7-10 years of planting. According to Singh and Yadav (2014), guava trees are typically planted with a spacing of 6 to 8 metres between rows and 3 to 5 metres between trees within a row in low-density plantings. This spacing and planting density encourages a more open and well-ventilated orchard layout. (Singh & Yadav, 2014). The advantages of low-density planting are numerous, as Paramesha and Ravishankar (2013) have shown. Better fruit quality is the outcome of increased photosynthesis fostered by improved light penetration. Furthermore, the improved air circulation lowers the risk of illness, giving guava trees a better habitat. Additionally, less rivalry among trees promotes greater water and nutrient absorption, which increases tree vigour and productivity overall

4.1.1 Vertical row planting pattern

1. Square system: In this system, trees are planted on each comer of a square whatever may be the planting distance. This is the most commonly followed system and is very easy to layout. The central place between four trees may be advantageously used to raise short lived filler trees. This system permits inter cropping and cultivation in two directions.

2. Rectangular system: In this system, trees are planted on each corner of a rectangle. As the distance between any two rows is more than the distance between any two trees in a row, there is no equal distribution of space per tree. The wider alley spaces available between rows of trees permit easy intercultural operations and even the use of mechanical operations.

3. Hexagonal system

• In this method, the trees are planted in each comer of an equilateral triangle.

• This way six trees form a hexagon with the seventh tree in the centre.

• Therefore, this system is also called as 'septule' as a seventh tree is accommodated in the centre of hexagon.

• This system provides equal spacing but it is difficult to layout.

• The perpendicular distance between any two adjacent rows is equal to the product of 0.866 x the distance between any two trees.

• This system accommodates 15% more trees than the square system. The limitations of this system are that it is difficult to layout and the cultivation is not so easily done as in the square system.

9.1 INTRODUCTION

Establishment of an orchard incurs long term investment for which it needs a very critical planning. As it is a long-term investment, plants planted in the orchard should suit to the prevailing climatic condition of that area. The land remains occupied as long as 40 to 50 years. Any mistake committed during initial year is hard to rectify later on. Proper layout of the orchard ensures optimum utilisation of land and resources for successive economic production. It becomes easy for different inter-cultural operations, harvesting and transportation of the produces. Uniform distribution of plants in the selected land in various systems of planting is done after proper layout.

9.2 LAYOUT

The proper layout of orchard aims at accommodating maximum number of trees per unit land area, maintaining adequate space for proper development of the trees and convenient orchard management practices.

Pineapples are commonly propagated through vegetative means, as the crop sets very few or no seeds and seeds possess slow germination process and low survival rate of seedlings under natural conditions. Vegetative parts such as stem suckers, peduncle slips, and fruit crowns are commonly utilized for vegetative multiplication of pineapple.

Selection of planting materials: Slips or hapa suckers are commonly preferred for commercial multiplication because they may produce fruit within 14-16 months after planting. Crowns are not commonly used as they may take up to 24 months after planting to harvest. Ground suckers (ratoon) and side suckers (side shoots) produce fruit 12-14 months and 18-20 months after flowering, respectively.(Pineapple Technical Group, 1999).

The fresh suckers should not be used for planting. Pineapple suckers should be stored for a few months to allow them to dry before planting, as they may begin to decay if planted in moist soil. Suckers are graded according to vigour and size, such as small, medium, and large. Planting the same graded suckers in the same plot helps to avoid uneven growth of the plant, uneven flowering times, and harvesting times. Additionally, using uniform planting material makes cultural practices easier, increases labour efficiency and other inputs, ultimately reducing the cost of cultivation.

Chadha et al. (1974) observed the superiority of slips and suckers as planting materials compared to crowns. In both slips and suckers, larger planting materials resulted in more vigorous plants. Medium-sized slips or suckers led to more flowering, while larger grade material resulted in a more staggered f lowering period. Smaller slips or suckers yielded fruit earlier. Slips produced better quality fruits, and the yields were comparable to the highest yield obtained with the largest suckers.
