Symptoms: The hypocotyls of germinating seeds are infected. The germinating seeds become covered with sooty black masses of spores. The infected tissues become dark brown and shredded. Necrosis and shredding of tissues may extend into branches.
The organism is both soil borne and seed borne.
Causal organism: Aspergillus niger
Management
i) Seed treatment with Carbendazim 50% WP @ 2-2. 5g/kg or Carboxin 37.5% WP +Thiram 37.5% WP @ 3gm/kg of seed.

Abstract
India, recognized as leading producer of fruits, holds a significant position in global grape cultivation. This chapter comprehensively examines the export performance of fresh grapes from India, focusing on growth patterns, market diversification, competitiveness, and trade direction. During 2019-20, India exported over 193 thousand metric tons of grapes worth Rs. 2,176.88 crores, with the Netherlands, Russia, and the UK being key markets. Using compound annual growth rate (CAGR) analysis, the study finds significant positive trends in grape exports across major destinations. Instability indices reveal moderate fluctuations, with Bangladesh and Hong Kong showing the highest volatility, whereas the UAE demonstrated market stability. The decreasing trend in the Hirschman index indicates growing diversification in India’s grape exports. Comparative advantage analysis (RSCA) suggests India gained competitiveness post-2015. Nominal Protection Coefficient (NPC) values below unity further underscore India’s export price advantage. Mark Chain analysis reveals stable future prospects, with Netherlands projected to remain India’s top grape importer through 2022-23. The findings provide strategic insights for exporters and policymakers to strengthen India’s position in global grape markets by aligning trade efforts with loyal importers and emerging high-value destinations.

Abstract
India’s grape industry has emerged as a key contributor to horticultural exports, driven by increasing production, evolving market strategies, and trade liberalization. This chapter analyses the trends, growth, instability, and export potential of both fresh (HS 080610) and dried grapes (HS 080620) from India between 2004 and 2023. While, India ranks among the top global producers, the fresh grape segment has seen consistent growth in exports, supported by initiatives like APEDA’s GrapeNet traceability system and private-sector innovation through companies like Sahyadri Farms and Mahindra Agri. In contrast, the dried grape segment, despite high growth potential, has faced volatility and continues to show a trade deficit. Using compound growth rates (CGR) and the Cuddy-Della Valle Index (CDVI), the study evaluates performance across production, trade value, and instability metrics. Exports potential maps highlight untapped markets such as the United States, EU, and Southeast Asia. Strengthening post-harvest infrastructure, ensuring compliance with international quality standard, and investing in value addition remain critical for India to enhance its global competitiveness in grape exports.

1. Blast
Diagnostic Symptoms
• Pathogen attacks the crop at all stages of crop growth.
• Symptoms appear on leaves, nodes, rachis, and glumes. On the leaves, the lesions appear as small bluish green flecks, which enlarge under moist weather to form the characteristic spindle shaped spots with grey centre and dark brown margin (Leaf blast).
• Spots coalesce as the disease progresses and large areas of the leaves dry up and wither. Severely infected nursery and field appear as burnt.• Black lesions appear on nodes girdling them. The affected nodes may break up and all the plant parts above the infected nodes may die (nodal blast).
• During flower emergence, the fungus attacks the peduncle and the lesion turns to brownish-black which is referred to as rotten neck / neck rot / panicle blast (neck blast).
• In early neck infection, grain filling does not occur while in late infection, partial grainfilling occurs (Fig.1).

Rust
The rust of wheat has been studied more than any other disease in the world. K.C. Mehta and colleagues conducted exceptional research on the disease in India. There are three recognized wheat rusts. These include Puccinia graminis tritici, which causes black stem rust; Puccinia recondita, which causes brown rust (leaf rust); and P. striiformis, which causes yellow rust. Considering their later seasonal arrival, brown and yellow rusts inflict more damages than black rust.
1. Black or Stem Rust
Diagnostic Symptoms
• Symptoms are produced on almost all aerial parts of the wheat plant but are most common on stem, leaf sheaths.
• Brown pustules of uredina appear on lower surface of the leaves, leaf sheaths and the stems, and on the spikes. which give them a rusty appearance.
• Uredina form urediniospores , which are the repeating spores.
• Uredina gradually start producing teliospores and finally transform into telia.

Litchi (Litchi chinensis Sonn.), a subtropical perennial fruit tree, belongs to family Sapindaceae and is indigenous to China. Its cultivation spread to the neighbouring countries of the south-east Asian region and other countries. The fruit of litchi is small, heart-shaped, conical or spherical in shape and pinkish red to bright-red in colour, with varying colour intensity in different cultivars. The pulp of fruit is crispy and grape-like in texture, very succulent and aromatic and is generally characterized by a sweet, acid, juicy and soft taste. Because of these reasons, litchi is highly prized in its fresh form as well as in different processed formulations. The total litchi production is about 24,00,000 tonnes from the net cultivated are of about 8,00,000 ha. The main litchi-producing countries are China, India and Thailand, whereas it is commercially grown also in many other countries. Of the total world litchi production, China and India contribute about 90%. Although litchi plants are long-lived, even then new plantings of this fruit are being done regularly, ensuring the continuous growth of production at the global level. In India, where this fruit can be grown in off season also in the southern states of Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Kerala, the litchi production is about 7,37,200 tonnes from an area of 99,170 ha (Chandrakala et al., 2023).
 

Introduction
Fruits and vegetables are an important part of the human diet as they provide the necessary nutrition, essential minerals, vitamins, antioxidants, dietary fiber, etc., required for maintaining proper health. India is the second largest producer of fruits and vegetables in the world after China. Comparison of area under horticultural crops during 2011-12 and 2021-22 indicate substantial improvement from 18.5 million ha to 27.6 million ha with a simultaneous increase in production from 215.04 million MT to about 333.25 million MT respectively in the country within a span of just one decade (Table 1.1). The credit for this spectacular growth in area and production goes to the sustained efforts of the central and state governments for the launch of several farmers’/ growers’ welfare schemes viz., National Horticulture Mission (NHM), Horticulture Mission for Northeast and Himalayan states (HMNEH), Mission for Integrated Development of Horticulture (MIDH); R&D support by the ICAR and State Agriculture & Horticulture Universities, extension agencies/Krishi Vigyan Kendra and proactive farmers and orchardists. However, the increase in production has still not kept pace with the improvement in infrastructure for post-harvest handling, management, processing, and value addition. Various studies still indicate that under normal conditions more than 15-20% of the produce goes to waste from production to consumption which in monetar terms accounts for huge economic losses. A recent study sponsored by the Ministry of Food Processing Industries Government of India and conducted by NABARD Consultancy Services has indicated that about 19.33 million MT worth Rs 58013.71 Crores of fruit & vegetables goes to waste annually as postharvest loss (4.87-15.05%) in various channels from harvesting to consumption (NABCONS,2022). The condition becomes even worse when there is a glut in the market, road blockades, or seasonal vagaries, and farmers are forced to leave their produce in the field itself without harvesting or dispose it at throwaway prices. Such a situation can, however, be controlled by diverting thisproduce to processing for conversion into a number of value-added products for its later use in human consumption. Thus, processing and preservation of horticultural crops have now become a necessity rather than a luxury.

Introduction
Freezing is one of the oldest and most widely used methods of food preservation, which allows the preservation of taste, texture, and nutritional quality in foods better than any other methods. The freezing process is a combination of the beneficial effects of low temperatures at which micro-organisms cannot grow, chemical reactions are reduced, and cellular metabolic reactions are delayed. Freezing is generally referred to as a unit operation in which the temperature of food is reduced below the freezing point and a proportion of water undergoes a change in state to form ice crystals. Immobilization of water to ice and the resulting concentration of dissolved solutes in unfrozen water cause a lowering of water activity of the food. Thus, reduction in water activity and use of low temperatures coupled with some pre-treatments like blanching is the basis for food preservation by freezing. Fruits such as strawberries, oranges, raspberries, black currants, and vegetables like green peas, green beans, sweet corn, spinach, carrots, sprouts, and potatoes are examples of commercially frozen fruits and vegetables.
The frozen food market is one of the largest and most dynamic sectors o the food industry. Despite considerable competition between the frozen food industry and other sectors, large quantities of frozen foods are being consumed all over the world. The frozen vegetable industry mostly grew after the development of scientific methods for blanching and processing in the 1940s. The commercialization history of frozen fruits is older than frozen vegetables. The commercial freezing of small fruits and berries began in the eastern part ofthe United States in about 1905.

Vegetable crops are highly susceptible to biotic stresses incited by different diseasecausing micro-organisms (fungi, bacteria, phytoplasma, virus), insect pests, nematodes, arachnids and weeds. In contrast to abiotic stresses caused by the environmental factors such as drought, heat, soil salinity, alkalinity, etc., biotic stress-causing agents directly deprive their host of its nutrients leading to reduced plant vigour and, in extreme cases, death of the host plant. In vegetable crops, different biotic stresses are the major cause of pre- and post-harvest losses.
Indiscriminate use of chemicals for the control of diseases, insect pests and nematodes has several disadvantages particularly, increasing cost involved in chemical control, residual toxicity of the chemicals (fungicides, antibiotics, insecticides) in food chain and development of resistance against pathogens and insect pests to different chemicals. Management of diseases and insect pests involve the use of resistant varieties and integration of cultural and chemical control measures.

There is wastage and loss of food during its journey from production to consumption. Approximately one-third of the massive 1.3 billion tonnes of food produced annually goes to waste due to various factors such as poor
handling after harvesting, unfavorable storage conditions, insect infestations, and diseases. To combat these losses, synthetic chemicals have historically been used to control pathogens and pests, but concerns over their potential health risks have led to restrictions on their usage. In response, researchers are now focusing on developing safer and more effective physical treatments for disinfecting and protecting horticultural produce. This chapter specifically explores the advantages of using heat treatment as one such method, discussing how it helps maintain the quality of fruits and vegetables while simultaneously reducing postharvest losses.
Some of the heat processing methods are discussed below:
Fruit juices, RTS and nectars are preserved by pasteurization or by using chemical preservatives. Squashes, crushes, syrups and cordials are preserved by adding chemical preservative like potassium metabisulphite or sodium benzoate.

Tea (Camellia sinensis) is one of the most important beverage crops in the World and the second most commonly drank liquid on earth after water. It has numerous medicinal benefits mainly due to its antibacterial and
antioxidant properties. The major tea growing regions of the world are South-East Asia (India and Sri Lanka), Eastern and South Africa consisting of Kenya, Malawi, Tanzania, Uganda and Mozambique. All these countries are producers of black tea. China and Japan are the major producers of green tea. These countries experience cool, tropical humid climate where this crop is being cultivated. However, at present, the crop is also being cultivated in wide range of climates from Mediterranean to warm, humid tropics to include countries such as Russia and Georgia in the northern latitudes and Argentina and Australia in the southern latitudes (Plate 8. 1). The region to which the crop is grown is closely linked with the climate. The crop is grown across wide altitudes up to 2200 m a.m.s.l. Sri Lanka, Kenya, China and Vietnam are the major competitors to India in tea exporting field. China is the major producer of green tea while Sri Lanka and Indonesia are producing mainly orthodox varieties of tea. Tea industry in India occupies an important place in the national economy since last 172 years. It is an essential item of domestic consumption. Tea is also considered as the cheapest beverage amongst the beverages available in India.

Introduction
From the tiniest insects to the largest blue whales, all species in the animal kingdom have been shown to undergo the migration. Millions of animals embark on epic journeys every year in search of food, shelter, and opportunity for mating. These animals routinely travel thousands of kilometres by land, sea, or air, which both tests and improves their endurance. Among the most striking animal migrations are those of Arctic terns. The long-distance migration of these little birds from pole to pole is well-known. They are thought to move over 40,000 kilometres (25,000 miles) a year, spending the majority of their time at sea chasing an endless summer. One of the most well-known migrations is that of the monarch butterfly, which travels across several generations. Though they are widespread throughout the United States and beyond, monarch butterflies are most known for their ability to travel 4,800 kilometres (3,000 miles) from Canada to Mexico. Millions of monarch butterflies fly south each year from their northern ranges to the oyamel fir forests near the Sierra Madre mountains, where they build massive roosts to remain warm throughout the winter. The monarchs begin their annual migration northwards in the spring, taking three to five generations to reach their goal. The migration that is the most dramatic belongs to the wildebeest. They coexist with thousands of zebras and gazelles in enormous herds that number over a million. The yearly migration of wildebeest across Tanzania and Kenya in quest of new water and grazing land is well-known. One of the most magnificent displays of nature is thought to be the migration. Animals that migrate are essential to preserving ecosystem balance and sustaining life as we know it. They distribute seeds and serve as pollinators, which support the structure and functionality of ecosystems.

1.1 Introduction
Concentrated milks, like evaporated milk and sweetened condensed milk, serve as practical substitutes for fresh milk in regions where access to it is limited or where transportation and storage are challenging. These products go through specific processing techniques to reduce their water content, thereby improving their shelf life and transportability. Evaporated milk is created by removing water through evaporation and then
sterilizing it to prevent microbial growth. This process results in a thicker consistency and a slightly caramelized flavor due to the heat treatment. On the other hand, sweetened condensed milk is made by adding a significant amount of sucrose to the milk and excluding oxygen, which inhibits microbial growth. This results in a thick, sweet product suitable for various culinary uses. These concentrated milk products are usually packaged in small cans, making them convenient for storage and transportation. However, they are sometimes diluted before consumption with water to resemble the taste and consistency of fresh milk. In regions where even concentrated milks are not easily accessible, alternatives like whole milk powder or recombined milk are used. These alternatives involve dehydrating milk into powder form or reconstituting milk components to create a liquid similar to fresh milk. Innovations in processing and packaging have led to the development of alternative uses for concentrated milks, expanding their versatility beyond traditional applications. These products continue to provide essential dairy
nutrition in areas where fresh milk is scarce or hard to obtain, offering a shelfstable solution to meet dietary needs.

Poultry is raised by approximately 80 percent of rural households in developing countries. Food and Agriculture Organization’s statistics department show that total egg production has grown from 61.7 million tonnes in 2008 to 76.7 million tonnes in 2018. China continues to lead the way, producing 466 billion eggs in 2018, which represents 34 percent of the global market. China has been the world’s largest producer of eggs for the last 30 years. China, European Union (EU), United states of America (USA) and India produce almost 60 percent of the world’s eggs, while the next 6 largest producers take a further 16 percent of the market. This means that the top 10 egg producers account for more than three fourth of the world’s egg production. Asia is the largest eggproducing region, with more than 60 percent of global output. 

Abstract
Pesticides, which are extensively employed in agriculture and pest management, pose serious dangers to the environment and public health because they frequently enter aquatic ecosystems through runoff, leaching, and inappropriate disposal. Acute and chronic toxicity in aquatic creatures caused by pesticide poisoning in water bodies can disturb ecosystem services and biodiversity. As sentinel species, fish have immune-toxic consequences, such as impaired immune function and increased vulnerability to illness. Aquatic animals and human health are at risk due to the bioaccumulation of pesticides in fish tissues and their subsequent biomagnification in the food chain. In order to control pesticide exposure and guarantee safety, important parameters such as Maximum Residual Limits (MRLs) and Acceptable Daily Intake (ADI) are essential. In order to control pesticide, use and lessen its negative effects, government regulations and international standards are essential. In order to protect aquatic ecosystems and human health, future research should give priority to environmentally suitable pesticide substitutes and strong regulatory frameworks.

In wastewater treatment, techniques like activated sludge and biofilms are utilized for the removal of nutrients and the breakdown of pollutants. In aquaculture, microbial management and probiotics help in sustaining water quality and improving the health of aquatic species. In bioremediation, microbes areemployed to tackle contaminants like heavy metals, oil spills, and pesticides, with advancements in microbial consortia enhancing the effectiveness of pollutant-specific degradation. the role of microorganisms as bioindicators and biosensors. Abstract
Emerging contaminants (ECs) are a class of newly discovered contaminants that have been identified as major water pollutants that have negative impacts on human health in recent years. These micropollutants are said to bioaccumulate in people, other aquatic food web creatures, and macro invertebrates. Conventional treatment methods are unable to eliminatethem. Only advancements in analytical  instrumentation made it possible to identify these pollutants, even at minuscule amounts. As new compounds are discovered over time, concerns are raised about their origins, fate, transportation, transformations, and effects on aquatic habitats. The purpose of this chapter is to provide an overview of the contaminants that are categorized as “emerging,” together with information on their sources, entry points into the environment, and associated threats to environment and possible treatments to somehow eliminate them.

The reclassification of the order Rickettsiales was predicated upon comprehensive genetic analyses of 16S rRNA, groESL, and surface protein genes. Consequently, organisms within this order were systematically assigned to one of two families: Anaplasmataceae and Rickettsiaceae. Within the Anaplasmataceae family, phylogenetic analyses consistently delineated four genetically distinct clades: (1) Anaplasma, (2) Ehrlichia, (3) Wolbachia, and (4) Neorickettsia. Despite the obligate intracellular nature of rickettsial organisms in both families, those classified under Rickettsiaceae proliferate freely within
the host cell cytoplasm, whereas members of the Anaplasmataceae family are confined exclusively to membrane-bound vacuoles within the cytoplasm of host cells.
The first documented cases of anaplasmosis trace back to the late 19th century in South Africa. However, it wasn’t until 1910 that the causative agent of the disease was conclusively identified morphologically as “marginal points” within red blood cells by Max Theiler, later named it Anaplasma marginale. A year later, he identified another species, A. centrale, which caused a milder form of the disease in cattle. During the 1930s, Sanborn, Stiles, and Moc demonstrated the mechanical transmission of A. marginale by horse flies and stable flies. In the late 1980s, the life cycle of A. marginale was fully elucidated in ticks belonging to the genus Dermacentor.

There are number of internal and external factors that affect the production performance of animals, among which parasites and parasitism are major of concern constraints to animal’s productivity especially in tropical countries. Feed intake and nutrient requirements have been recognized for long time as an important parameter for determining the efficiency of animal production. Most of the parasitic infection in domestic animals is caused by gastrointestinal nematode, which may result in depression in appetite, impairment in GI functions, alteration in protein, energy and mineral metabolism and changes in water balance. Nutrition can affect the ability of the host to cope with the consequences of parasitism and to contain and eventually to overcome parasitism. Since it is proposed that the host gives priority to the reversal of the pathophysiological consequences of parasitism over other body functions, it is to be expected that improved nutrition will always lead to improved resilience. On the other hand, it is proposed that the function of growth, pregnancy and lactation are prioritized over the expression of immunity. Improved nutrition may affect the degree of expression of immunity during these phases and can thus influence the resilience and resistance of host to parasite infection.

5.1 Introduction

They can capture data from remote oceans, deserts, and polar regions, offering a truly holistic view of atmospheric processes.
Satellite remote sensing enables meteorologists to measure a wide array of atmospheric parameters, including temperature and humidity profiles, cloud properties (type, height, movement), wind fields, precipitation rates, and the distribution of atmospheric gases and aerosols. This wealth of data is crucial for initializing and validating numerical weather prediction models, tracking severe storms, monitoring long-term climate trends, and conducting fundamental atmospheric research. This chapter will delve into the fascinating world of satellite remote sensing in meteorology, exploring the principles behind how these orbiting observatories collect data, the various types of meteorological satellites and their specialized instruments, and the diverse applications of the information they provide for understanding and forecasting

Imagine the air around us. Even though we can’t see it, air has weight. Atmospheric pressure is essentially the force exerted by the weight of the air molecules above a particular point on the Earth’s surface.
Think of it like this: Imagine you’re at the bottom of a swimming pool. The water above presses you down, and you feel that pressure. Similarly, the atmosphere, a giant ocean of air, has layers of air molecules, and their weight presses down on everything below, including us.
• Atmospheric pressure is defined as the force per unit area exerted by the weight of the air column extending from the surface of the earth ,to the top of the atmosphere above that area

Providing balanced nutrition to different groups of dairy cows with varying production levels is a significant challenge for commercial dairy farmers. The production performance of dairy cows is directly influenced by the type of feed provided. Ensuring balanced nutrition is crucial to optimize productivity in milk production and reproduction while minimizing feed costs. Dairy cow rations should consist of high-quality forages, a balanced mix of grains and protein sources, essential minerals, vitamins, and other feed supplements. Proper feeding practices are essential to prevent under or overfeeding and ensure that cows receive the right amount and combination of feed ingredients.
Formulating well-balanced rations that meet the nutrient requirements of cows results in optimal feed digestion and utilization. Transitioning from traditional feeding systems to a total mixed ration (TMR) feeding system is recommended for efficient and profitable feeding of dairy cows. TMR feeding systems have been widely adopted in developed countries due to their effectiveness. Each mouthful of TMR provides a complete and balanced ration for the cows, reducing feed selection by the animals and promoting synchronization of carbohydrate and protein availability in the rumen, leading to lower rumen acidity.
TMR feeding systems offer benefits such as labor savings, the ability to feed various types of feeds, and ensuring a nutritionally balanced ration at all times. While TMR may pose challenges in meeting individual nutrient requirements for each cow, larger dairy farms with multiple groups of cows can effectively manage this issue. By providing a nutritionally balanced ration consistently, TMR feeding systems help cows consume energy close to their requirements while maintaining the physical characteristics of roughage necessary for proper rumen function, ultimately leading to optimal production and economic efficiency.

The method of selective breeding involves selecting particular breeding prospects to accumulate beneficial alleles and increase the prevalence of desired traits in a population. Characteristics, including growth, disease resistance, reproduction, development, and coloration, are frequently addressed in aquaculture (Maluwa, 2022). Selective breeding, whereby people are picked to have offspring with desired traits, is the foundation of genetic improvement initiatives in all organisms. This is a type of directed evolution in which the breeder determines fitness instead of the organism’s innate capacity for survival and procreation. Darwin’s theory of natural selection was affected by selective breeding, which existed before the mechanics of heredity were discovered. Darwin agreed that deliberate human selection used excellent outcomes (Hill, 2017). By choosing better parents, a species’ desirable features can be improved. Common carp (Cyprinus carpio) were first cultivated in ponds in China 4,000–5,000 years ago, marking the beginning of fish farming. Environmental effects, growing competition for water, and increased demand due to population development and declining wild fish sources are some of the issues aquaculture faces as it grows. Controlled mating and lineage monitoring were two early breeding techniques that resulted in severe inbreeding and decreased output. Mendel’s plant experiments established the groundwork for quantitative and contemporary genetics when they were made public in
1900 (Gjedrem and Baranski, 2010). Mendel’s experiments were confirmed in 1900, marking the beginning of selective breeding for plant production. Fifteen years later, Farm animals were treated using the same methods (Hagedoorn, 1950). Genetically modified stocks are used for most plant and farm animal production. Genetic advancement in aquaculture is still sluggish, though. Although the first aquaculture family-based breeding program began in 1975, by 2010, only 8.2% of aquaculture production was based on genetically modified stocks (Neira, 2010; Rye et al. 2010).

Legumes that produce dry seed suitable for human consumption are known as pulses, and they are agronomically valuable plants in the field and in the food chain. In the past ten years, grain legumes—particularly pulses—have become more popular as a means of addressing global agricultural concerns. (Bohra et al. 2015, Varshney et al. 2015).The best plant-based sources of dietary protein, as well as other minerals including iron, zinc, magnesium, and dietary fiber, are pulses. (Bohra et al.2014, Kouris-Blazos and Belski 2016, Maphosa and Jideani 2017). According to Simpson and Campbell (2015), a plant-based agricultural diet high in fruit or legume fiber helps to improve microbial diversity and has a beneficial effect on short-chain fatty acid levels, both of which are critical for preserving gut health. Because of their unique ability to fix nitrogen symbiotically with Rhizobium spp. in their root nodules, legumes not only improve nutritional health but also increase soil fertility (Graham and Vance 2003, Stagnariet al. 2017). The Leguminosae, often known as the Fabaceae, are the third largest family of flowering plants, behind the orchid (Orchidaceae) and sunflower (Asteraceae) families (Walters 1960), with 750 genera and 20,000 species (Polhill 1981).With a productivity of 1016 kg ha-1, 93.23 million tons (m t) of pulses are harvested worldwide from 91.77 million (m ha) of land (http://faostat.fao.org/). With a cumulative average productivity of 1030 kg ha-1, the major pulse crops—dry bean (primarily common bean), chickpea, dry pea (pea), cowpea, pigeonpea, lentil, and faba bean—share 92.58% (84.05 million ha) of the world’s total pulse production, or 92.82 percent (86.53 m t) (http://faostat.fao.org/). According to their ability to adapt to tropical and temperate agroclimatic conditions, pulse crops can be broadly divided into two groups: 1) warm season crops, such as common bean, pigeonpea, and cowpea, and 2) cool season crops, such as pea, chickpea, lentil, and faba bean (Cannon et al. 2009, Young et al. 2003, Zhu et al. 2005). Chickpea, pea, and lentil are regarded as one of the founding grain crops and helped start modern agriculture because of its early domestication (around 11,000 years ago) (Zohary and Hopf 2000).Over the past 60 years, the global area under pulses has increased from 64 to 91.77 million hectares (http://faostat.fao.org/), and numerous high-yielding varieties have been developed and released as a result of extensive research on conventional breeding for pulse improvement due to their high agricultural value (Singh 2005, Saxena 2008, Pérez de la Vega et al. 2011, Torres et al. 2011, Gaur et al. 2012).Pulses are less productive than other crops, particularly cereals, due to factors such growing in risky settings, unpredictable rainfall, extended dry spells, and susceptibility to a range of pests and diseases (Borlaug 1973, Varshney et al. 2013a).

1. Definition and Scope Pharmacognosy is the study of drugs and other economically valuable materials derived from natural sources, encompassing both plant and animal origins. This field examines a wide spectrum of aspects related to these materials, including their history, production, commerce, collection, selection, identification, valuation, preservation, and ultimately, their use. The term “pharmacognosy” was first formally used by C. A. Seydler in his 1815 dissertation, Analecta pharmacognostica. The word itself is derived from the Greek terms pharmakon, meaning drug or medicine, and gnosis, meaning knowledge. Thus, pharmacognosy literally translates to “knowledge of drugs.” It’s crucial to differentiate pharmacognosy from pharmacology due to their distinct areas of focus within the realm of drugs. Pharmacology, aptly defined as “a discourse on drugs,” centers on investigating the effects of drugs and other chemical substances on living systems, be it organs or entire organisms. Through domestication, early agriculturalists inadvertently altered the genetic makeup of wild progenitors, favouring traits that aligned with their needs and preferences. This process involved selecting and propagating plants with desired characteristics over successive generations gradually transforming once-unruly wild species into more docile, productive and palatable varieties. The domestication of crop plants was a gradual and ongoing process, often spanning thousands of years. It required keen observation experimentation, and an inherent understanding of plant biology and genetics even before these concepts were formally understood. This patient and persistent effort by our ancestors paved the way for the development of diverse and nutritious food sources, enabling the establishment of sedentary communities and the rise of complex civilizations. The current state of food systems is being challenged due to the heavy reliance on a limited number of resource-intensive staple crops. The emphasis on maximizing yield and the consequent reduction in diversity over the course of domestication history has led to the development of contemporary crops and agricultural practices that are environmentally unsustainable, susceptible to the impacts of climate change, lacking in essential nutrients, and contributing to social inequalities. For many years, researchers have advocated for diversification as a viable solution to tackle the issues surrounding global food security. In this context, we present a vision for a new phase of crop domestication, which aims to expand the range of crop diversity. This approach involves active engagement and benefits for three key components of domestication: a) the cultivated crops themselves, b) the surrounding ecosystems, and c) the human populations depending on these crops. We delve into the potential of current tools and technologies to initiate a revival of diversity within existing crops, enhance the value of underutilized crop varieties, and introduce new crops into cultivation. This multipronged strategy aims to reinforce genetic diversity, promote resilient agroecosystems, and establish a more varied and robust food system. The successful execution of this renewed phase of domestication hinges on a bold commitment from researchers, funders, and policymakers to invest in both fundamental and practical research efforts. As we navigate the challenges of the anthropocene epoch, characterized by significant human impact on the environment, the process of domestication offers a pathway to construct more diverse and adaptable food systems that can better serve humanity’s needs.

Introduction
Angiosperms produce attractive and intricately structured flowers, within which their reproductive process occurs. In flowering plants, as in other plant groups, a diploid spore-producing generation (sporophyte) alternates with a haploid gamete-producing generation (gametophyte). The flower contains specialized structures, such as the stamen (or androecium) and the pistil (or gynoecium), where the respective male and female gametophytes are formed. The pollen grain serves as the male gametophyte, while the embryo sac serves as the female gametophyte. These gametophytes are responsible for producing sperm and egg cells, respectively facilitating their union during fertilization. The pollen grain contains the male gametophyte in angiosperms or gymnosperms. Conversely, spores function as a resting and dispersal phase for cryptogams (Moore et al., 1991). The study of pollen grains (produced by seed plants, angiosperms and gymnosperms) and spores (produced by pteridophytes, bryophytes, algae and fungi) is known as palynology. This discipline examines the structure and formation of pollen grains and spores, their dispersal and their preservation under various environmental conditions. Palynology serves as a valuable research tool for understanding many aspects of plant and animal metabolism. Moreover, a deeper understanding of pollen can aid plant breeders in enhancing efforts to improve global food and fiber supplies. In the anthers of higher plants, neither the developing pollen nor the surrounding tissues exhibit autonomous growth and development. Instead, the developing anther functions as a system where the gametophytic and sporophytic generations of the plant communicate, coordinate and co-participate in development. This chapter aims to understand the various aspects of gene activity that occur during pollen development.

Introduction
Maize (Zea mays L.) is the second most widely crop grown globally after wheat, with 205 million hectares under cultivation. The area cultivated under maize is steadily increasing and expected to overtake that of wheat by 2030 (Erenstein et al., 2022). With production exceeding 1.2 billion metric tons, maize surpasses the production of other highly cultivated cereals like wheat and rice mainly due to its higher yields (Erenstein et al., 2022). Maize is cultivated in the Americas, Africa, and Asia, for multiple end-uses (Nuss and Tanumihardjo, 2010). It is a staple food in several countries across Africa and Latin America, and in a few countries in Asia, with an overall contribution of 15-20% of daily calorific needs (Shiferaw et al., 2011).
The global maize yield tripled from the 1960s with the average yield rising from 2 tons/ha to the current 5.8 tons/ha, mainly due to the adoption of highyielding hybrid cultivars and complementary input use (Erenstein et al., 2022). Maize is naturally an outcrossing species and inbreeding is unnatural. When maize is subjected to inbreeding and the resulting inbred lines from genetically distant backgrounds are crossed, hybrid vigor or heterosis is realized (Springer and Stupar, 2007). Hence, the development of the homozygous inbred lines is a very important step in hybrid maize breeding.
In the well-evolved maize breeding programs, the germplasm is well characterized into different heterotic groups where the hybrids developed by crossing inbred lines from different heterotic groups exhibit high heterosis (Ertiro et al., 2017a; Sang et al., 2022). For the development of inbred lines, maize breeders develop F1 populations by crossing two inbred lines within the same heterotic group (Prigge et al., 2011; Sang et al., 2022). Inbred lines are developed from the F1 population by recurrent self-pollination for 6-8 generations; this can take up to 3-4 years or even more, depending on the availability of off-season nurseries for generation advancement. The resulting inbred lines are highly homozygous (~98-99%), but not 100% homozygous. The doubled haploid (DH) technology emerged as a viable alternative to the time-consuming and resourceintensive recurrent selfing method to produce 100% homozygous inbred lines in just two crop seasons (Prasanna et al., 2012; Chaikam et al., 2019a).
In addition to significantly reducing the time taken to develop homozygous lines, the use of DH lines in maize breeding offers several other benefits: a) As DH lines are completely homozygous at all loci, they are stable and do not show further inbreeding depression; b) DH lines are also best suited for evaluating distinctness, uniformity and stability (DUS) criteria, thereby better facilitating plant variety registration and intellectual property protection (Röber et al., 2005); c) The use of DH lines facilitates selections on completely homozygous lines which is more reliable and effective compared to selections on segregating families with different levels of heterozygosity (Chaikam et al., 2019a); d) Use of DH lines also simplifies breeding operations like planting, managing the nurseries, seed shipments, record keeping, etc. as selfing nurseries spread over several generations are replaced by just two generations for DH line development (Prasanna, 2012; Röber et al.,

The integration of bioinformatics into plant breeding has been shaped by several key milestones over the past few decades. Concepts like Breeding 4.0 (Wallace et al.,2018) and, 5G Breeding (Varshney et al., 2020) have gained global prominence, strengthened by the availability of extensive omics data. The advent of DNA sequencing technologies marked a key milestone in this field, catalyzing numerous genome sequencing projects worldwide such as Arabidopsis, rice, tomato, maize, wheat, etc. Next-generation sequencing (NGS) platforms, such as Illumina, PacBio, and Oxford Nanopore, have enabled rapid sequencing of entire plant genomes, facilitating the identification of genetic variations, including single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), insertions, deletions, and structural variants (Deschamps & Campbell, 2010; Fuentes-Pardo et al.,2017). These advancements have significantly improved comparative genomics, enabling researchers to compare the genetic makeup of different plant species or varieties and identify genes associated with agronomic traits, such as yield, disease resistance, and environmental stress tolerance (Khan et al., 2024). As a result, these developments have revolutionized plant genetic research and crop improvement strategies, providing unprecedented opportunities to enhance agricultural productivity (Bellare et al., 2018; Shendure and Ji, 2008).
Bioinformatics has revolutionized plant biology by combining computational and statistical tools to analyze genomes, transcriptomes, proteomes, and metabolomes facilitating insights into genome structure, function, and evolution (Yadav et al., 2015; Saha et al., 2023; Roychowdhury et al., 2023). Genomics, emerged in the 1980s primarily focussing on mapping and sequencing genomes and there after laid the groundwork for functional genomics, which systematically explored gene functions (Hieter and Boguski, 1997; (Jackson et al., 2011). Further, advances in sequencing technologies, such as long-read platforms, have enabled detailed analyses of structural variants in crop genomes, crucial for identifying agronomic traits.
The large volumes of genomic sequence data have allowed researchers to identify genetic markers for crop improvement and candidate genes for trait development. However, the full potential of these genomic sequencing efforts depends on assigning functions to the thousands of genes with unknown roles. Model organisms such as humans, mice, Arabidopsis, rice, tomato, Medicago, and wheat have been instrumental in advancing genomic investigations (Bult, 2006). A notable example is the model organism Arabidopsis thaliana, which has provided a foundation for exploring fundamental biological phenomena using resources such as the TAIR database (Lamesch et al., 2012). Leveraging advanced bioinformatics techniques, researchers have enhanced crop productivity, mitigated diseases, and optimized resource management in agriculture. Advanced approaches like genome-wide association studies (GWAS) and transcriptome analysis continue to refine the understanding of genetic underpinnings, revolutionizing modern agricultural strategies (Mai et al., 2023).

Heritability measures the fraction of phenotype variability that can be attributed to genetic variation. For example, it is incorrect to say that since the heritability of personality traits is about 0.6, that means that 60% of your personality is inherited from your parents and 40% comes from the environment. In addition, heritability can change without any genetic change occurring, such as when the environment starts contributing to more variation. As a case in point, consider that both genes and environment have the potential to influence intelligence. Heritability could increase if genetic variation increases, causing individuals to show more phenotypic variation, like showing different levels of intelligence. This chapter delves into the multifaceted impacts of climate change on the fisheries sector, exploring the complex interplay between rising temperatures, altered weather patterns, and ocean acidification, and how these changes affect fish populations, habitats, and the communities that depend on them.
We will examine the ways in which climate change is altering the fundamental
dynamics of aquatic ecosystems, leading to shifts in species distribution, disruptions in food webs, and increased vulnerability to extreme weather events. Special attention will be given to the differential impacts on various regions and fisheries, considering the unique challenges faced by small-scale fisheries and developing nations. 13.1 Climate Change Impacts on Marine Fisheries
Climate change is significantly altering marine ecosystems, leading to profound impacts on fisheries. These changes affect various aspects of fish biology and ecology, including fishery dynamics, migration patterns, and breeding seasons (Fig.13.1). Here’s a detailed breakdown:

1. Introduction
Every part of life is susceptible to continual change, and one of humanity’s primary goals is to manage these changes for our advantage. This is particularly true in the fields of medicine and pharmacology. These fields concentrate on the synthesis or discovery of chemical combinations and substances, as well as their use in the treatment of psychological and physical ailments. Drug product manufacturing has been governed for many years by a regulatory framework that tests raw materials, in-process materials, end-product features, and batch-based operations, and sets process conditions to ensure the quality of finished goods (Patel & Shah, 2022).
1.1. Drug Discovery
Drug discovery is a multi-step process that takes a lot of time and effort. From the earliest known civilizations, plants, minerals, and animal parts have been used as remedies. As knowledge expanded, so did the methods for finding new drugs. The first step is identifying the biological target, which can be proteins, RNA, or DNA, that causes the disease. The next step is screening molecules that can interact with the target or Hit compounds. “Hits”—new molecules with promise for use in medicine—can be natural products, compounds produced by computational chemistry, compounds discovered by chemical library screening, compounds from combinatorial chemistry, or compounds originating from pharmaceutical biotechnology. The chemical structures and drug properties of the Hit compounds are then optimized and assessed in vitro and in vivo to obtain Lead compounds. A lead compound needs to have a well-established structure and mode of operation. In order to make the lead chemical a safe medication candidate for human clinical trials, it is further refined (Figure 1). In the preclinical phase that follows, the drug candidate’s dissolution, transport, catabolism, and excretion in animals, as well as safety and dosage concerns, are further investigated (Guan & Wang, 2024) (Leal, 2020)

India’s urban transition is among the most significant in the world, both in scale and complexity. With over 34% of the population residing in urban areas as of 2018 and projections indicating that nearly half the nation will be urban by 2047, the quality of urban governance will decisively shape India’s developmental trajectory (United Nations, 2018). Urban areas are expected to contribute over 70% of the GDP by 2030. However, cities face multifaceted governance challenges ranging from infrastructure deficits and environmental stress to inadequate service delivery and institutional fragmentation (NITI Aayog, 2021). In response, digital urban governance has emerged as a transformative paradigm, leveraging information and communication technologies (ICTs) to enable responsive, efficient, and inclusive urban administration. Digital technologies are increasingly embedded into urban governance structures and processes, from e-governance portals and grievance redressal apps to real-time traffic monitoring systems and digital financial tools. This shift is reflected in flagship national programmes such as Digital India, Smart Cities Mission, and the National Urban Digital Mission (NUDM), which aim to digitise public service delivery, enhance citizen engagement, and enable data-driven decision-making at scale (Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs [MoHUA], 2021; MeitY, 2015). At the heart of this transformation is the creation of robust digital infrastructure such as Integrated Command and Control Centres (ICCCs), city data platforms, and open APIs combined with evolving institutional frameworks that promote interoperability, decentralisation, and cooperative federalism (Kapur & Joshi, 2021; NIUA, 2023). The chapter explores the evolution and current landscape of digital urban governance in India by first outlining the conceptual underpinnings of urban governance and then transitioning into the digital domain. It analyses the role of urban digital infrastructure and the institutional architecture that supports it, highlighting the coordinated efforts under NUDM to build an open, interoperable, and citizen-centric digital ecosystem across India’s 4,400+ towns and cities (MoHUA & MeitY, 2021). Before 1800, it was believed that organic compounds could only be synthesized by living organisms, not possible in the laboratory. Friedrich Wohler successfully synthesized the first organic compound urea in the laboratory. Recently, synthetic organic chemistry has been a well-established science to construct derivative or new compounds, which have been utilized in the fields of medicine, food, clothing, nutrition, polymers, plastic, highly durable materials, and high energy fuels, that are beneficial to humans, and society. To achieve faster organic transformations, many advancements have been made, as a result, catalysts have been taken into account, which provides an alternate faster path for the reaction by lowering the activation energy. The catalysts play a very crucial role in achieving organic transformations more efficiently, affordably, and with higher yields in less time. Additionally, the catalyst which is environment-friendly and easily recoverable after completion of the process, would be beneficial in both economic and ecological ways (Trost, 1991). The utilization of nanoparticles as catalysts in organic transformations is more advantageous over conventional catalysts because of lower catalyst loadings, and high performance of the reaction in heterogenous phase. The large surface area of nanoparticles is responsible for high reactivity towards organic transformations. Till now, many nano-dimension metals like gold (Au), silver (Ag), platinum (Pt), and palladium (Pd) efficiently utilized to catalyze organic transformations (Muskan et al., 2022). The ever-growing demand for productive and sustainable catalytic systems has driven the utilization of transition metal nanoparticles as catalysts in organic conversions (Pathak et al., 2024). Among these, copper-based nanoparticles have shown great potential as catalysts due to their large surface area and variable oxidation states, which enable them to function as both oxidizing and reducing agents, effectively replacing traditional palladium catalysts (Pathak et al., 2024). Copper-based nanoparticles having specific physicochemical properties, varying in size, porosity, surface/volume ratio, and shape can also be synthesized through different physical, chemical, and biogenic methodologies. Most physical and chemical methods are considered toxic, have huge energy demands, and have high-temperature demands. In contrast, biogenic methods are simple and non-toxic. The biogenic procedure can be done by using microbes, fungi, algae, plants, extracts, etc. This chapter provides insights into various aspects of the biogenic synthesis of copper-based nanoparticles using plants and multiple catalytic applications in recent organic transformations.

Agriculture is the backbone of many economies worldwide, particularly in developing countries where it is a significant source of livelihood for millions of people. However, agricultural productivity is heavily dependent on weather and climate conditions, making it one of the most vulnerable sectors to climate variability and change. The increasing frequency and severity of extreme weather events such as droughts, floods, and heatwaves further exacerbate the challenges faced by farmers, impacting crop yields, food security, and the overall sustainability of agricultural systems. To mitigate these impacts, operational agrometeorological advisories have become essential tools for farmers and agricultural stakeholders. These advisories provide critical information on weather and climate conditions, helping farmers make informed decisions on planting, harvesting, irrigation, pest management, and other agricultural practices. Traditionally, farmers have relied on indigenous knowledge and observations of natural phenomena to predict weather patterns and plan their agricultural activities. While this traditional knowledge is valuable, its limitations in the face of rapid climate change and the increasing complexity of agricultural systems necessitate the integration of modern approaches. Modern agrometeorological advisories leverage advances in meteorology, remote sensing, and information and communication technologies (ICTs) to provide more accurate and timely weather and climate information. These technologies enable the collection, analysis, and dissemination of data on various meteorological parameters, including temperature, rainfall, humidity, wind speed, and solar radiation. Furthermore, the development of crop models and decision support systems (DSS) allows for the simulation of crop growth and development under different weather and climate scenarios, facilitating more precise agricultural planning and management. Despite these advancements, there remains a significant gap in effectively integrating traditional and modern approaches to agrometeorological advisories. Many modern systems overlook the value of traditional knowledge, while indigenous practices may not fully incorporate the benefits of modern technology. This disconnect can lead to advisories that are not fully tailored to the needs and contexts of local farming communities, limiting their adoption and effectiveness. This chapter outlines a research agenda aimed at bridging this gap by exploring how traditional and modern approaches can be integrated to enhance

The concept of climate-resilient agriculture encompasses a range of approaches, including climate-smart agriculture, conservation agriculture, and agroforestry. These approaches recognize that agricultural development and growth are inextricably linked to climate change, and that farmers, policymakers, and other stakeholders must work together to promote climate-resilient agriculture practices. The dynamics of development and growth engineering in the context of climate-resilient agriculture are complex and multifaceted. They involve understanding the interactions between climate change, agricultural productivity, and rural livelihoods, as well as the role of institutions, policies, and technologies in promoting climate-resilient agriculture practices. Several driving factors are influencing the dynamic development of climate-resilient agriculture (Fig. 7.1). These include:

These four processes are far more than mere technical formalities; they form the bedrock upon which the utility, accuracy, and trustworthiness of any crop model, no matter how elementary, are firmly built. By engaging with these essential steps, we can transform theoretical frameworks into powerful instruments capable of supporting sustainable agricultural planning, risk management, and adaptive strategies in a dynamic climate.

In the upcoming sections, we will embark on an in-depth examination of the diverse forms that ITK related to weather forecasting takes. This includes detailed discussions on:
• Observational Indicators: How traditional communities keenly observe subtle changes in the natural world, such as specific patterns in animal behavior (e.g., bird migration patterns, insect activity, animal calls), plant phenology (e.g., early or late flowering, unusual fruiting patterns of wild plants), and the behavior of flora and fauna as harbingers of upcoming weather shifts.
• Atmospheric and Astronomical Signs: The interpretation of sky conditions (e.g., cloud formations, specific colors of sunrise/sunset, halos around the sun or moon), wind patterns, atmospheric pressure changes (often perceived through bodily sensations or changes in local sound travel), and celestial phenomena (e.g., star brightness, moon phases) as indicators for short-term or seasonal forecasts.
