Introduction

India is considered as one of the emerging superpowers of the world. This potential is attributed to several indicators, the primary one being its demographic trends and a rapidly expanding economy. In 2015, India became the world’s fastest growing economy with a 7.5% estimated GDP rate. But in the year 2020, the pandemic lockdown situation created adverse impact on the global economy. At this juncture, there is an urgent need to focus on native and indigenous resource mapping and judicious utilization of it to be a self-reliant. The COVID-19 pandemic has necessitated a new set of reforms to strengthen the economy. The first mention of this came in the form of the ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat Abhiyan’ or ‘Self-Reliant India Mission’ by the Government of India during the announcement of the coronavirus pandemic related economic package on 12^th May 2020. Almost 70% of India’s population depends directly and indirectly on agriculture for their survival. This means the country cannot have a development model that ignores agriculture.

It’s time to take a look at India’s agriculture economy. Over the last 10 years, (2008-19) India has been a net exporter of many farm produce. In fact, in 2018, the government has come up with a new agricultural export policy aimed at doubling farm income by 2022. However, in 2019-20, agri-exports were just $36 billion and the agri-trade surplus was $11.2 billion. The net agri-trade surplus has been falling over a period of time, making it difficult to achieve doubling of farmers’ income and doubling of agriculture exports by 2022as well.

India is not yet self-reliant in various essential agriculture commodities and depends heavily on imports. India imports around 15 million tonnes of edible oil every year — more than 9 million tonnes of palm oil and about 2.5 million tonnes each of soybean oil and sunflower oil. It buys palm oil from Indonesia and Malaysia, and soy and sunflower oil from Argentina, Brazil, Ukraine and Russia. There is a need to create self-reliance in theses commodities enhancing productivity of Indian farms to create competitive advantage for domestic producers. India can step up cultivation of sunflower, groundnuts, mustard and oil palms. Presently, India has about two million hectares of land that is suitable for oil palm cultivation.

Abstract

The tradition of growing of flowers is age old. The flowers have travelled from the bowl of prayers to gardens to commercial sector for revenue. The quality concerned world demands for round the year production and supply of quality produce which can only be possible under controlled environment production. A range of location specific and crop specific infrastructures are being commercially used for production of planting material and flowers. General and crop specific guidelines for trade of cut flowers are available which the producers and policy makers must know for successful promotion of export of cut flowers from the country. The producer can also use practical methods for vase life study of their produce which is of great relevance in cut flower trade.

Introduction

Indian floriculture industry is shifting from traditional flowers to cut flowers for export purpose. The liberalized economy has given an impetus to Indian entrepreneurs for establishing export oriented units (EOUs) under controlled climatic conditions. The wide variations in agro climatic conditions in India permit us to grow various types of tropical and subtropical flowers. Though such plants grow successfully in open conditions without cover, they fail to meet the quality requirements of being blemish free. High quality ornamental plants meant for export should be scientifically grown only in plastic, glass or fibre glass greenhouses or at least under partial cover. Though initial investment is high in protected cultivation, the products in them will obtain far more attractive prices.

Structure

Structural unit of edible portion of most fruits and vegetables is the parenchyma cells and makes up bulk of cells. A parenchyma cell is rather thin walled and may be polygonal or cubical in shape.  Walls of parenchyma cells in young plants are composed almost entirely of fibrils of cellulose. In parenchyma cells of plants actively metabolising protoplast portion represents only about 5% of total cell volume. This protoplast is rather film like and is pressed against cell wall by large water filled central vacuole.  Protoplast has inner and outer semi permeable membrane layers between which is confined cytoplasm and its nucleus. 

2.1. Structure of fruits and vegetables

2.1.1. Fruit

• Fruit is a part of a flowering plant that derives from specific tissues of the flower, mainly one or more ovaries (Fig. 1). Plant product with aromatic flavors, which are either naturally sweet or normally sweetened before eating.

2.1.2. Vegetables

• It exhibits wide verity of plant structure like edible seeds, roots, stems, leaves, bulbs (Fig. 2), tubers and non-sweet fruits of herbaceous plants.

? Seeds and pods-contain natural wax coating. Eg. Many legumes

? Bulbs, roots and tubers with no coating, but tuber has suberisation

? Flowers, buds, stems and leaves having low shelf life

The word meat comes from the old english word mete, which referred to food in general. Most often this means the skeletal muscle and associated fat but it may also describe other edible tissues such as organs, livers, skin, brains, bone marrow, kidneys and lungs etc. In other words we can say meat is those animal tissues which are suitable for use as food by the man. It is composed of numerous types of tissues like muscle tissues, epithelial tissues and nervous tissues but the major component of meat is muscle. Particularly skeletal muscle is the principal source of muscle tissue in meat while smooth muscle contributes little to meat. The muscle and connective tissues are the major compositional components and contributes towards qualitative and quantitative characteristics of meat. Broadly muscle can be classified into striated and smooth muscles. Striated muscles have transverse band pattern as seen in skeletal and cardiac muscle. However, smooth muscles do not show such pattern and mainly found as a component of blood vessels.

ABSTRACT

Homegarden is a least studied agroecosystem of the world. Present study, conducted in 430 homegardens before Tsunami in five island groups namely North Andaman, Middle Andaman, South Andaman, Car Nicobar and Noncowry (former three, Andaman group and later two, Nicobar group of islands), India, reports composition, species structure and its distribution and functioning of the system. The homegarden is comprised of 6 components i.e., garden, livestock, poultry, fishpond, homesteads, and rice fields. Coconut and arecanut trees predominate in the garden. Fruits, spices and agroforestry trees are other ligneous species, which together with the former trees form multistorey canopy structure. But, composition and dominance of the tree species vary across the islands. Arecanut to coconut ratio is greatest invariably in all the homegardens in the Andaman. Family members do maximum 70 per cent labour in the homegarden and consume 35-65 per cent fruits, poultry, livestock and fishpond products, however, surplus is sold. Free range grazing in nearby protected forests is an age old practice of animal feeding whereas poultry birds are fed among the garden trees and household refuge. Livestock includes cattle, buffaloes and goats in Andaman and pig and goat in Nicobar. Cattle are used for milk, he buffaloes as a draft animal and pig and goat for meat. Cattle, mostly local breed, yield a little amount of milk, an average, 1 liter cow-1. Plantation crops production is low: coconut 18-30 nuts palm^-1 and arecanut 0.75 kg palm^-1. The homegardens serve the subsistence as well as earn income, but low (US$ 2357) to the house. In Nicobar, Nicobarese huts interspersed in a big natural coconut plantation form the homegarden. Tribe Nicobarese do not know crop husbandry, rather they pursue round the year sea fishing and pig rearing. They relish most pork, unripe boiled wild banana, Nicobari tuber, fruits and seeds of Pendanus and fried fish.

The heart failure is an important cause of morbidity and mortality in animals and man. It is the end stage complex event of cardio-vascular diseases. For having a better understanding of heart failure in animals for adopting rational therapeutic management, it is utmost necessary to have thorough knowledge about heart, its structures, its nerve supplies, its vasculature, current generation and conduction as well as its functioning in the healthy subjects.

Kidney is one of the main excretory organs of the body. By secreting urine the kidney serves as the outstanding guardian of the milieu interieur. The main functions of the kidney in the maintenance of body homeostasis are listed below.

1. Maintenance of proper osmotic concentrations.
2. Maintenance of blood volume.
3. Maintenance of ion concentration.
4. Removal of nitrogenous end products of protein metabolism primarily urea, creatinine and ammonia.
5. Removal of foreign substances and/or their metabolic end products.

Thus, kidney control the concentration of most of the constituents of body fluids. In case of birds, the primary end product of protein metabolism is uric acid instead of urea. So, the major excretory product through urine in case of birds is uric acid.

Briefly, the kidney form urine in the following way. Endowed with a relatively huge blood supply, the renal glomeruli filter about 200 litres per 24 hours of protein free fluid from the blood in human being ( ie 50-60 times the plasma volume). This filtrate, which contains the soluble non protein components of the plasma, is submitted to extensive reabsorption by the renal tubules. The relative control on the reabsorption process by the kidney, is the key mechanism by which the kidney is able to maintain the composition of the milieu interieur.

Kidney also releases several hormones like renin, erythropoietin and prostaglandins, which have the capacity to influence cells and alter their physiological processes.

Substances which are in excess of the body and/or are harmful need to be removed constantly. This function is carried out by the excretory organs which include skin, gastrointestinal tract and kidney. Skin excretes water and salts in the form of sweat. Gastrointestinal tract removes undigested food material as well as some heavy metals in the form of faeces. Kidneys are the main excretory organs which together with a pair of ureters, a urinary bladder and urethra constitute the excretory system. Renal function is essential for homeostasis.

Structure of a business or legal framework

1. Sole proprietorship: A private company is a form where an individual is the exclusive proprietor of the business. It constitutes a straightforward setup where the owner is one person who manages the everyday operations of the company. In this case, the business is not regarded as an independent entity. • Easier Startup: The creation of a private company does not necessitate completing forms or remitting a state fee. This can ease the procedure and render it more affordable.

• Simple tax reporting: Because a business is not legally a separate entity, your income tax return includes the expenses and income of the business. As an added bonus, you can use business losses to offset your earned income, which can result in a higher taxable income.

• Privacy: Sole proprietors do not have to file annual reports with state or federal governments. Therefore, the company is not disclosed in the same way as in other structures.

Bacteria can be defined as a group of diverse and ubiquitous prokaryotic single cell microorganisms. The size of bacteria varies with genera/species. In cocci the diameter varies between 0.5-1 µm. The measurement of bacillus / rod shaped bacteria is 4-8 µm ? 1-1.25 µm. The surface area and volume ratio of bacteria is very high. The nutrients are absorbed through a large surface area and it is rapidly distributed into a small volume. So the growth rate and metabolism of bacteria is very high. The bacterial cell mass is packed near the surface and no circulatory system is required to distribute the nutrients. The growth and metabolism rate of bacilli are more than cocci because surface area and volume ratio of a sphere (cocci) is lowest among all the geometrical forms.

Shape of bacteria

The shape of bacteria is mostly regulated by the rigid cell wall covering the bacteria. Different shapes of bacteria are observed.

The information that drives the process of life is encoded in the genome of the organism. Structurally defined, a genome is an organization of genetic information consisting of nucleic acids (deoxyribonucleic acid or ribonucleic acid). Arrangement of nitrogenous bases in the nucleic acid codes the information for execution of cellular processes. Four types of bases (Adenine, Guanine, Cytosine and Thymine) are present in deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) while in RNA Uracil replaces thymine group of any three bases on transcribed RNA represent a codon. With four types of bases, sixty four types of codons can be formed. Genetic information encrypted in these codons is released in the form of arrangement of polypeptides consisting proteins via mRNA intermediate. This universal process of flow of genetic information from DNA to RNA to protein is known as the central dogma of life. The whole set of information coded in 64 codons, out of which 61 codes for one or more amino acids (building block of polypeptides/proteins) and three indicating where to stop is called the book of life or genetic code.

3.1 Introduction

Eggs are composed of three main parts; the eggshell with the eggshell membrane, the albumen or white, and the yolk. The yolk is surrounded by albumen, which in turn is enveloped by eggshell membranes and finally a hard eggshell.

The eggshell is composed of a foamy layer of cuticle, a calcite or calcium carbonate layer, and two shell membranes. Even though we are now in the atomic age, the idea of the atom is not new. More than 2,000 years ago, the Greek philosopher Democritus suggested that any matter is composed of tiny indestructible particles called Atoms. The word atom is derived from the Greek word Atoms meaning something that can not be cut further. However not much attention was paid to this concept till 1808, when Dalton proposed the famous “Atomic theory”. According to this theory, “all matter is composed of tiny indivisible particles called ‘Atom’. Combining the ideas of Lavoisier, Boyle and his own, Dalton proposed that atoms of elements combine together to make molecules of a compound. This was a great step in the concept of the atom and compounds, since this gave a clear picture of how the supposedly smallest particles of matter called atoms could be put together to form the various familiar substances found in nature.

The chromosomes provide physical basis by which genetical stability and continuity of individuals and populations are maintained in each generation. Chromosomes also play an important role to generate variation which is an essential component of evolutionary process. Although crossing over during meiosis is responsible for generation of variability, but structural changes in chromosome too are important for causing variation and evolution, since genetic and cytological analysis of individuals of related species or isolated populations within the species have shown that they may differ by various kinds of changes in their chromosomal structure. The structural changes usually may result from spontaneous chromosome breakage. But under normal condition/s such breakage is an rare event and its frequency is dependent upon environmental conditions, i.e., temperature, various high energy radiations (e.g. X, λ and β-rays) and some chemicals. Chromosome breakage is reported to be higher in some hybrids and in presence of particular genes. Certain chromosomes and chromosomal segments (centromeric and other heterochromatic regions) are more likely to undergo breakage. But stability and continuity of structural changes in the chromosomes depend on the behavior of the broken ends. There is no change if broken end rejoins at the same chromosome but a change may occur if it rejoins with the end of other chromosome or if remains unattached. In case of a pair of homologous chromosomes if one chromosome has any structural change and other one is normal we customarily call it a structural hybrid.

Abstract

This review presents an idea on the botanical description, medicinal properties and traditional usage of wild, edible and aromatic plant (Nymphaea alba) in the human nutrition. Nymphaea alba Lin, also known as the White Water lily, White Lotus, or Nenuphar is an aquatic flowering plant of the family Nymphaeaceae. Nymphaea is a weed in India and its production pretty much as good as water chest nut and Nelumbo nucifera. Its rhizome is rich in tannic acid, gallic acid, alkaloids, sterols, flavonoids, glycosides, hydrolysable tannins and high-molecular-weight polyphenolic compounds. It is used as associate aphrodisiac, anodyne, antiscrophulatic, astringent, cardiotonic, demulcent, sedative and antiinflammatory. Further, it conjointly produces calming and sedative effects upon the nervous system, and is beneficial within the treatment of sleep disorder, anxiety and similar disorders. Moreover, the content of starch in the rhizome is said to be 40%. Extensive work has been carried out on agronomic and phenotypic properties for most plants, but relatively little study has been carried out on the properties which are of direct technical and economic interest to competitive food and nonfood industry. Non-conventional food resources and their value addition have attracted attention in the recent yearsfor their potential use as functional ingredients in food formulations, besides food they have also been used for non-food applications. Moreover, Plants provide the predominant ingredients of medicines in most medical traditions. So, there is tremendous potential for the profitable industrial use of these medicinal plants and exploring them for further use. Keywords: Non-conventional food resources, Nymphaea alba, Rhizome.

1. Introduction

The heritage of medicinal plants used in India has an ancient history. The epic of Ramayana witnessed Sanjivani Booti as life saving drug. Two important compendia on medicinal plants i.e., Charaka Samhita and Sushruta Samhita were published between 1000 BC and 600 BC. In these Ayurvedic literatures, uses of more than 1,200 plant drugs along with their action and specific therapeutic applications are mentioned. Charaka made 50 vargas (groups) of drugs while Sushruta made 38 ganas (groups) of drugs (Singh and Gautam, 1997). India, with its diverse agro-climate, harbors large plant-diversity. Eastern Himalayas comprising Darjeeling, Sikkim and adjacent Nepal as well as Bhutan hills are very rich in florastic diversity, several of which are endangered but economically useful medicinal plants with high demand in national as well as in international market (Manandhar, 1999). A great many of these wild Himalayan medicinal plants have found their way into modern bio-pharmaceuticals and bio-cosmetics in recent times (Rai et. al., 2000). One such species is Nepalese Kutki (Picrorhiza scrophulariiflora, Pennell) belongs to family Scrophulariaceae.

P. scrophulariiflora is better known by the name Nepali Kutki. The rhizome of this plant has been found to contain the chemicals like Kutkin, D-mannitol and vanillic acid (Yang, 1996). It is said to have effects on fever, malnutrition due to digestive disturbance, jaundice, diarrhoea and dysentery (Zhang et al., 1994). In India it is valued for their demonstrated value as an antibiotic. They are also used as an adulterant of, or as substitute for, Gentiana kurrooa. Properties that these two species share include the ability to stimulate appetite and gastric secretions (Jain, 1968). In Nepal rhizome of this species is also used as a cathartic, in case of dyspepsia, as a purgative as well as in the treatment of scorpion bites (Anon., 1993). Some of the important active photochemicals are listed in Table 1.

Abstract

In the present study, a novel work on comparison of physico-chemical characterization and bacterial diversity of wheat straw compost and vermicomposting has been initiated in the tropical region. Wheat straw compost shows lesser pH, EC, TDS, Organic Carbon, Total Nitrogen and Total Phosphorus than vermicompost whereas there was an increase in Total Nitrogen, Total Phosphorus and Electrical Conductivity and a drop in the pH, TDS and Organic Carbon of the vermicompost as the composting progressed from 0, 3, 10, 17, 24 and 31 days. Strains of Bacillus spp. and Thermoactinomycetes were screened from the wheat straw compost, which are ecologically important and have commercial potential for enzyme production. These strains were able to degrade cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin and exhibited cellulase activity. Enterobacter aerogenes, Micrococcus luteus and E.coli were isolated from the gut of Eudrilis eugeniae which help in the transformation of biodegradable waste materials into valuable compost.

Leveling

Leveling is a method of surveying used for determination of the difference of elevations or levels of various points on the surface of the earth. The elevation of a point is its vertical distance above or below a reference level, called datum. Most commonly used datum is the mean sea level (M.S.L). Leveling is required to determine the undulations of the earth’s surface for topographic mapping. Leveling is needed for the design of highways, railways, canals, sewers, etc. Leveling is essential for the layout of construction projects, locating the excavation levels and for the control of various elevations in buildings, bridges, dams etc. The results of the leveling can be used to determine the catchment area, volume of the reservoir and the area submerged by a reservoir.

ABSTRACT

The present experiment was conducted in order to develop a protocol for rapid in vitro propagation of pomegranate Cv. Mridula. Shoot tip and nodal segment explants selected from mature plant were cultured in MS medium supplemented with NAA and BAP in different concentration and combinations. To control phenolic browning, sub- culturing of cultures was under taken at an interval of first and third day after inoculation. The MS medium supplemented with NAA 0.4 mg/l + BAP 1.0 mg/l showed highest percentage of shoot differentiation with 77.77 per cent and 81.25 per cent response from shoot tip and nodal segment explant respectively. In the same media, earlier shoot initiation as well as more number of multiple shoots/culture were obtained. The shoots when elongated up to 2.5 - 3.0 cm length were transferred for rooting in the ½ strength MS media supplemented with auxins. There was no significant difference for root induction among the type of auxin used either NAA, IBA or both in combination. The concentration of auxins 0.5 mg/l was found to be optimum. Rooted plantlets after hardening in green house gave 49 per cent survival.

Abstract

Pollinators provide key services to both natural and agricultural ecosystems. Agricultural productivity depends, in part, on pollinator populations from adjacent semi natural habitats. Honey bees are the primary pollinators of mustard crop because it is highly attractive to bees and provides both nectar and pollen. Studies were conducted to assess the diversity and relative abundance of pollinators in mustard (Brassica juncea) of 2011-2012 at Apiary Garden, G.B Pant University of Agriculture & Technology, Pantnagar.A total of 19 insect visitors belonging to order Hymenoptera (15) and Diptera (4) were found to visit the mustard blossoms. Hymenopteran visitors belonged to six families namely Apidae (6), Scollidae (3), Xylocopidae (1), Halictidae (2), Magachilidae (1), Anthophoridae (1) and Sphecidae (1). Lepidopteran visitors belonged to families Pieridae (1). Besides this some Dipteran visitor belonged to families these were Syrphidae (3) and Muscidae (1) were observed on mustard flowers. From the family Apidae, honeybees (Apis mellifera, Apis dorsata, Apis cerana indica and Apis florea), Ceratina sexmaculata, Xylocopa iridipennis and stingless bee Tetragonula laeviceps family Apidae. Scolia (Discolia) binolata, Campsomeriella collaris and C. annulata of family Scollidae, the Alkali Bees (Nomiasp.) and Halictussp. of Halictidae, Leaf cutter bee (Megachile disjuncta) of Megachilidae, the digger bee (Anthophorasp.) of Anthophoridae and Sphex sp. of Sphecidae. Three species from family Syrphidae (Syrphus corollae, Episyrphus valtiatus and Eristalis tenax) and one species from Muscidae (Musca domestica) visited the mustard flowers. The abundance (percentage of insect/m2/2min.) of Hymenopterans were maximum (79.97 %) followed by the Dipterans (16.15 %) and others (3.73 %). In Hymenopterans, the honeybees (Apis bees) were observed maximum (57.55 %) followed by non Apis bees (21.06 %) and the scolid wasp (1.35 %).

Compass survey principle

Compass surveying is a branch of surveying in which directions of survey lines are determined with a compass and the lengths of the lines are measured with a chain or tape. In practice, the compass is generally used to run a traverse. In compass surveying, a traverse consists of a series of straight lines connected together to form an open or closed polygon as shown in Fig.44.1. The points A, B, C, D and E defining the ends of the traverse lines are called traverse station or traverse points. The lengths of the traverse lines are measured with a chain or tape. At each traverse station, where the traverse lines meet, the angle is measured with a compass.

Also, due to the residual side effects of synthetic compounds that form bulk of the materials used for the production of pharmaceutical products. Aspirin can cause stomach bleeding, acetaminophen can cause liver damage Cox-2 inhbitor Vioxx and Celebrex can cause heart problem and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID’s) was reported to contribute to numerous death (Clegg et al., 2006; Wolf et al., 1999; Sing, 1998).

Abstract

The experimental results indicated that the treatments, cultivars and root stocks had expressed significant influence on growth, fruiting, fruit quality and leaf nutrient status of apple. The highest trunk girth (21.22 cm), shoot extension growth (22.77 cm), tree height (223.60 cm) and tree spread (184.20 cm) were recorded under the 2/3 dose of NPK  fertigation during 2003 and 2004.  The maximum yield (12.82 kg/tree), productivity (14.24 MT/ha) and fruit set (64.84%) were recorded in fertigation treatment of 2/3 dose of NPK which was significantly higher than other treatments during 2004 and similar trend was observed in the year 2003.

ABSTRACT

Studies on the impact of bio-fertilizers with levels of NPK on bulb yield, dry matter production, nutrient uptake and cost: benefit ratio in onion (cv. Bellary Red) were conducted in medium black soils during kharif and rabi seasons of 1999 and 2000 both under irrigated and rainfed conditions at the Agricultural Research Station, Hiriyur located under Central Dry Zone of Karnataka. The treatments were; T₁-Control, T₂-Azotobacter, T₃-Azotobacter+75% N+PK, T₄-Azotobacter +100%N+PK, T₅-Azospirillum, T₆-Azospirillum+75% N+PK, T₇-Azospirillum+100%N+PK, T₈-VAM, T₉-VAM 75% P+NK, T₁₀- VAM+100%P+NK, T₁₁ ? recommended NPK(125:50:125 kgha-1) and T₁₂-75% recommended NPK. The experiments were laid out in RBD in three replications.

The bio-fertilizers Azospirillum brasilence (500g ha-1) and Azotobacter vinelandii(500g ha-1) were applied to seedlings at transplanting separately by dipping the roots in the slurry for 15 minutes. The VAM fungi - Glomus mossae was applied to soil @ 1 kilogram per square meter area of nursery bed. The recommended dose of FYM @ 25 t ha-1 was applied to all the treatments as basal dose.

The results of the investigations revealed that the plants provided with Azospirillum + 100% N+PK (T₇) produced highest bulb yield (250.29;339.02;232.98 q/ha), highest total dry matter production (7053.96;8992.78;6287.03 kg/ha), maximum uptake of N, P a nd K ( 1 5 7 . 8 8 : 7 3 . 5 6 ; 7 0 . 4 6 N PK k g / ha ) , ( 2 0 6 . 8 6 : 9 6 . 2 5 : 9 1 . 1 0 N PK k g / ha ) , (131.81:50.25:71.24 NPK kg/ha) and also the maximum cost:benefit ratio of 4.00 (1:400), 5.42 (1:5.42), 3.94 (1:3.94) under irrigated condition during kharif and rabi seasons and under rainfed situation during kharif season respectively.

Thus, among all the treatments, application of Azospirillum + 100% N + PK (Azospirillum + 125:50:125 NPK kg/ha) was found to be most remunerative considering the nutrient uptake, bulb yield and total dry matter production and cost:benefit ratio, which gave the highest returns. This level can be followed for Bellary Red onion irrespective of seasons both under irrigated and rainfed conditions in the Central Dry Zone of Karnataka.

ABSTRACT

Basic understanding of plant cell proliferation and differentiation is essential for applying modern techniques of genetic transformation. The lack of understanding about the physiological and molecular mechanisms underlying in vitro morphogenesis, together with the non-availability of reliable morphogenetic markers, is one of the most serious constraints for application of gene transfer technology to plant improvement. Plant tissue culture has therefore remained an empirical science. In recent years, concerted efforts are being made to understand the molecular control of cell differentiation. In light of this, present work was carried out to study the role of CKI1 (cytokinin independent 1) gene, one of the genes implicated in shoot regeneration, by transforming the tomato cotyledons through Agrobacterium mediated transformation with two different gene constructs one with CKI 1 gene and another without CKI1 gene. In both the constructs, nptII gene was used as a selectable marker. Transformation of tomato cotyledon explants with CKI 1 gene resulted in higher regeneration of putative transformant s (8.0%) as compared to transformation of explants without CKI1 gene (2.1%). The results show that CKI1 gene has a role in increasing the regeneration frequency in tomato.

1. INTRODUCTION

The medicinal plants have been used by humans from the pre-historical times. Traditional medicine based on herbal remedies has always played a key role in the health systems of many countries. In India, the native people are exploiting a variety of herbals for effective curing of various ailments. Medicinal plants are widely used by all sections of the population and country is richly endowed with a wide variety of plants of medicinal value, which represents the great national resource (Alok, 1991).

It is estimated that at least 70 percent of population relay on herbal medicines for primary health care in our country (Holley and Williams, 1996). In India, different classical medicinal systems such as Ayurveda, Siddha and Unani are being practiced in the country and in addition to innumerable local folk medicinal traditions exist. More than 8000 species of wild plants are known to be used in India for the treatment of various health problems (Ved et al., 2000). This rich medicinal wealth is mainly distributed in two biodiversity hotspots that are Eastern Himalayas and Western Ghats. Numerous studies have pointed out that many drugs that are used in commerce have come from folk-use and use of plants by indigenous cultures (Anon, 1994). Medicinal plants form a heterogeneous group in growth, habit, distribution, reproduction, phenology and their ecological requirements.

Abstract

Seven different parents viz. July Elberta, Alton, J.H. Hale, Kanto-5, Saharanpuri, Quetta as female and Kateroo as male were used in the present crosses.  The crosses were made in the year 1997 and 76 hybrid seedlings under different crosses were raised  for these studies. The variability in respect of chemical characters, the mean values for titratable acidity for each cross varied between 0.50 to 0.75%, TSS 11.53 to 12.90oB,  reducing sugars from 2.33 to 2.88%, non-reducing sugars from 6.27 to 6.83%, total sugars from 9.24 to 10.05% and TSS/acid ratio between 14.47 to 23.90. The coefficient of variability varied 11.07 to 31.55% for titratable acidity, 0.00 to 23.02% for TSS, 5.24  to 18.53% for reducing sugars, 2.09 to 15.14% for non-reducing sugars, 0.00 to 6.80% for total sugars and 18.23 to 156.51% for TSS/acid ratio in these crosses.

Microencapsulation has found great applications in food business. However, the technology remains aloof from being fully exploited. Microcapsules offer food processors a way to shield sensitive food ingredients, mask or preserve flavours and aromas and conversion of volatile food components into easy-handled solid ingredients (like powders, capsules etc). A number of naturally occurring and synthetic polymeric materials have been identified so far that possess the entrapping property and are categorised as GRAS materials. Numerous techniques have been developed for using these entrapping materials to encapsulate the sensitive food ingredients. Controlled release of the food ingredients at proper place and right time could be therefore a key practicality that may be provided by microencapsulation. With strictly fine-tuned and stabilized release characteristic, this method adds worth to the merchandise. The areas of interest in this field include the development of alternative and inexpensive polymers that may be considered natural or mimic the properties of natural polymeric materials, like Gum Arabic, Gellan Gum, Gum Karaya, Gaur Gum and Gum Acacia. Limitations in many of the encapsulation techniques have occurred due to high value of raw materials and production. This review is effectively committed to the, properties of encapsulating agents along with the emphasis on different techniques used for encapsulation in the varied fields like food technology, pharmaceutical, commercial engineering and biotechnology.

Environmental problems have come to the forefront as one of the most important issues in transport policy. For a number of pollutants the road transport sector is one of the most significant contributors to environmental pollution. Vehicular emissions have been identified as one of the major contributors in deteriorating air quality in the urban centers. The problem has further been compounded by the concentration of large number of vehicles and comparatively high motor vehicle/population ratios in these cities. Substantial SPM, RSPM CO₂ and No_x are emitted. The problem of air pollution has assumed serious proportion in some of the major metropolitan cities of India. Therefore, CPCB has 296 monitoring stations all over India covering major cities.

The air pollution situation in most of the cities is still far from satisfactory. In India the major air pollution reason is automotive smoke and smoke from industries. New channels are also publishing pollution levels in selected metropolitan cities. The most polluted city in Asia is Pune. The SPM and RSPM levels are displayed at various squares to create awareness among the masses.

Smaller cities like Nanded, Parbhani and Yavatmal are not covered under National Ambient Air Quality Monitoring (NAAQM) scheme of Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB). The National Ambient Air Quality Standards for suspended particulate matters (SPM) are based on gravimetric measurement. Standards for Respirable suspended particulate matters (RSPM) are also based on gravimetric measurement. The development in terms of number of vehicles and building construction has also reached at the doors of these cities and towns. Nanded city having population of 5.5 lakhs has total number of Auto rickshaws more than 5,000. In the present study, Nanded city has been selected to check particulate matters and gaseous pollutants. Since, the city is one of the important Pilgrimage and commercial centre.

Real time weather data at different time intervals is very important for the crop weather studies, but through the agro-meteorological observatories such real time weather data are generally not collected. The acquisition of agro-meteorological data through conventional observatories requires services of trained personnel to collect, compile and creation of weather data base. With the advances in technology, weather observations are automatically recorded, stored and can be transmitted to the remote place with the help of Automatic Weather Station (AWS).

Chain surveying is the method of land surveying in which only linear measurements are made. This method of surveying quit simple and it requires only a chain, a tape, few ranging rods and few arrows. It is used for securing data for exact description, marking the boundaries of land and preparing the maps of the area to show various details. Check dams are small water control structures designed to slow down water flow and limit erosion, particularly in hilly or mountainous regions where other flow regulation methods may not be feasible. The suitability of a site for check dam construction depends on factors such as terrain gradient, soil characteristics, and the potential for enhancing groundwater recharge. Locations with flat or mildly sloped land and stable soil conditions for a solid foundation are generally ideal. These dams function as multi-purpose solutions, playing a vital role in water regulation and soil preservation. Their importance extends across hydrological, ecological, and social aspects, making them key components in sustainable infrastructure efforts.
WHAT ARE CHECK DAMS?
Check dams are small structures constructed across shallow rivers or streams to harvest water. These barriers help retain excess monsoon water in a small catchment behind them. The pressure buildup in this area pushes water into the ground, aiding groundwater recharge. This stored water, both on the surface and below, is primarily used for irrigation during and after the monsoon but can also serve domestic and livestock needs. They vary in size and are made from materials such as clay, stone, or cement. Earthen check dams can be easily built by farmers, whereas masonry and RCC (Reinforced Cement Concrete) dams require skilled labor and higher costs. Earthen structures typically do not allow overflow, unlike RCC and masonry dams which include spillways for excess water.
Construction of a Check Dam
Used as an engineering solution to prevent soil erosion in vulnerable areas, check dams reduce water speed, trap sediments, and sometimes only consist of an embankment. Initially, a water body forms behind the structure, which gradually fills with silt.

A chute spillway is a type of spillway that uses an open channel to convey excess water from a reservoir to a lower level, typically through a steep slope. It’s essentially a concrete-lined, open channel that allows water to flow at supercritical velocities. Design considerations include inlet and outlet structures, channel geometry, and ensuring the channel can contain the design flood discharge. Also known as a trough spillway or waste weir, is an open channel structure designed to safely convey excess water from a reservoir down a steep slope, typically to prevent damage to valley walls and ensure the structural safety of dams. It is particularly well-suited for earthen dams, where integrating a spillway within the dam body is not feasible, unlike ogee spillways, which are commonly used in concrete gravity dams.
The spillway usually consists of a steeply sloping, open channel constructed with reinforced cement concrete (RCC) slabs, typically 25 to 50 cm thick, with light reinforcement (approximately 0.25% of the concrete area).
