The rapid growth of Large Language Models has demonstrated that increasing model size, training data and computational resources can significantly improve performance. This chapter examines the theoretical and empirical foundations of scaling laws and their relationship with optimization strategies used to train and deploy increasingly capable LLMs. It discusses the major scaling dimensions of model parameters, dataset size and computational budget and explains how predictable relationships between these factors influence model development. The chapter considers the foundational work on scaling laws and the subsequent movement toward compute-optimal training approaches. It also examines distributed training, advanced optimization algorithms, memory optimization, data curation, quantization, pruning and efficient inference. Particular attention is given to Mixture-of-Experts architectures, efficient attention mechanisms and inference-aware scaling. The interaction between scaling laws and optimization is presented as a synergistic process in which scaling principles guide resource allocation while optimization techniques improve computational efficiency. The chapter concludes by discussing emerging capabilities, sustainability, hardware requirements and responsible scaling of future foundation models.

Large Language Models have fundamentally changed natural language processing and expanded the role of artificial intelligence across software engineering, healthcare, education, business and scientific research. This concluding chapter synthesizes the major technological, operational and societal themes addressed throughout the book and develops a roadmap for next-generation AI models. It considers the continuing evolution of model architectures, training methodologies, multimodal capabilities, real-time inference and specialized applications. At the same time, future AI development must address privacy, fairness, transparency, accountability, security, computational cost and environmental sustainability. The chapter emphasizes that LLM development cannot be viewed solely as a race toward larger models; future systems must also become more efficient, adaptable, interpretable and responsible. Emerging directions include self-improving systems, real-time reasoning, multimodal intelligence, domain-specific models and increasingly autonomous AI agents. Lifecycle governance, continuous evaluation and human oversight will remain essential as models become more deeply integrated into society. The roadmap therefore calls for collaboration among researchers, developers, industry, policymakers and users to create AI systems that combine technological capability with safety, sustainability, human values and social responsibility.

Impact assessment extends programme evaluation by examining the broader and longer-term changes associated with an intervention, programme, policy or technology. In agricultural extension and rural development, impact assessment is important for determining whether interventions have produced meaningful, sustainable and attributable changes in farming communities, livelihoods, technology adoption, institutional systems and environmental conditions. This chapter introduces the concept, purpose and contexts of impact assessment and explains the Impact Assessment Framework through the relationship between inputs, activities, outputs, outcomes and impacts. It discusses the meaning and selection of impact indicators and examines social and behavioural, socio-cultural, technology-level, environmental and institutional indicators relevant to agricultural extension. The chapter further presents quantitative, qualitative, participatory and mixed-method approaches to impact assessment, including statistical and econometric methods where appropriate. Environmental Impact Assessment and Social Impact Assessment are also considered as important dimensions of comprehensive assessment. Particular attention is given to issues of causality, attribution, data quality, time lags and external influences that can affect the interpretation of impact findings

Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) is an important statistical technique for separating variation attributable to different sources in an experiment. The chapter explains how total variation can be partitioned into controlled and uncontrolled components and how experimental error is used to assess treatment differences. The F-test provides the basis for testing the homogeneity of several treatment means simultaneously. The chapter discusses the assumptions underlying ANOVA, including independence, normality, additivity, and homogeneity of variance. This chapter examines the application of artificial intelligence, machine learning, and deep learning for agricultural weather forecasting and predictive analytics. It explains how historical meteorological records, satellite observations, and IoT sensor data can be integrated to develop more accurate forecasting systems. Techniques such as Long Short-Term Memory networks, attention mechanisms, ensemble learning, and probabilistic forecasting support improved prediction of complex weather patterns. Crop improvement is essential for developing horticultural varieties with superior yield, quality, resistance, and adaptation. This chapter introduces conventional breeding methods such as selection, hybridization, backcrossing, and mutation breeding, along with modern approaches involving molecular markers and biotechnology. Important breeding objectives include disease and pest resistance, abiotic stress tolerance, improved nutritional quality, shelf life, fruit characteristics, and market preference. Modern techniques such as marker-assisted selection, genomic approaches, and genome editing can accelerate the development of improved cultivars. Protected cultivation provides controlled or modified growing environments that enable horticultural crops to be produced beyond their normal climatic limitations. This chapter covers greenhouses, polyhouses, shade nets, insect-proof structures, tunnels, and other protected systems. It explains environmental factors such as temperature, humidity, light, ventilation, carbon dioxide, irrigation, and fertigation. Protected cultivation can improve productivity, quality, resource-use efficiency, and production timing while reducing exposure to adverse weather and certain pests. Proper environmental control and economic planning are essential because protected systems involve higher initial investment but can generate high returns through quality produce and extended market opportunities.

This chapter examines biomass-derived green nanocomposites as potential materials for lightweight systems and energy-storage-related applications. It discusses material fundamentals, design requirements, sector-specific performance expectations, material systems, and performance benchmarks. Green processing and circular economy integration are considered alongside current technological challenges and strategic research gaps. Biomass-derived resources provide opportunities to reduce dependence on non-renewable feedstocks while developing functional composite materials. 1. Basic Information

Benin is situated in West Africa at inter-tropical zone between the parallels 6°30 and 12°30 North and the meridian lines 1° and 3°40 East. The Republic of Benin is limited in the north by the Republic of Niger and to the North-West by Burkina Faso, in the south by the Atlantic Ocean, in the west by Togo and in the east by the Federal Republic of Nigeria. The Republic of Benin extends over 700 km length from the Atlantic Ocean to river Niger. Its width varies from 125 km, along the coast, to 325 km, in the northern part. It covers an area of 112.622 km².

With the third General Census of the Population and Habitat in February 2002, Benin counted 6,769,914 inhabitants thereby giving an average density of 60.11 inhabitants per km². Currently the population is estimated to nearly 8 million inhabitants with a natural rate of increase of 2.8 per cent. The average densities estimated from the last census of the population vary between 16 inhabitants per km² in the department of Borgou and 322 inhabitants per km² in the department of Atlantic.

1. Basic Information

1.1. Location and Size
 
Ghana, lying between latitudes 4º 30’ to 11ºN and longitudes 1º 10’E to 3º15’W, shares common borders in the east, north and west with the Republics of Togo, Burkina Faso, and Cote d’Ivoire respectively.  The country covers a total area (including water bodies) of 238,537 square kilometres.  

1.2. Climate
 
Ghana has a tropical climate with temperatures ranging between 21ºC and 32ºC. Mean annual rainfall in Ghana is generally lower in the northern part of the country (800-900 mm) and increases southwards (2100-2200 mm) albeit a small part of the eastern coastal belt has low mean annual rainfall of 700-800 mm. Humidity figures range from 78 to 87 per cent across the country. Although Ghana cannot be described as a mountainous country, there are a number of highlands and steep escarpments in the middle portion and some parts of the northern zone. The land is generally flat with more than half of the country at an altitude of 200 m.

1. Introduction

Iran, with an area of 1648 thousand sq.kms.,  is situated in the eastern portion of the northern hemisphere, in the south west of Asia, and is considered as one of the Middle East countries. Iran is a mountainous country with a variety of climates. The average temperature and rainfall for the whole country are quoted as 18ºC and 240 mm respectively (CAPES, 1996). The country is also organized into 28 provinces. Over the past two decades, rapid rate of population growth has been a major source of concern in Islamic Republic of Iran. The population of the country passed the 60 million figures in 1993 and is projected to reach 86 million by the year 2010. In fact, the Iranian population has doubled in this period (CAPES, 1996). For example, according to the 1991 census, the female population of 15 years and above was 15 million (Anonymous, 1998). However, thanks to considerable investments and well-organized and directed national population planning program, population growth rate is now 1.5 percent in the urban and two percent in the rural areas. At the national level, the figure is 1.65 percent (CAPES, 1996).

Functions of Livestock Housing

The most important purpose of livestock production is to increase the conversion efficiency of feed energy into the livestock products like milk, eggs, meat, wool, hair, hides and skins, draught power and manure (fertilizer). Scientific housing of livestock is necessary in order to get higher productivity from them. A proper housing design/structure should alter/modify the micro-climate inside the house so that animals are least exposed to the extremes of climatic conditions. Moreover, it should also provide better control of diseases & parasites, desirable working conditions for farm staff & better living conditions for the animals, better integration of various routine farm practices, opportunity for higher labour efficiency at farm, protection from predators & thieves, opportunity to express species specific natural behavior patterns and it must not compromise the welfare of the animals. Some of these functions are discussed in subsequent sub-headings.

1. GENERAL INTRODUCTION

Agriculture, as one of the most important economic sectors in Jordan, is under increasing pressure due to rising population, consumer affluence, pressure from globalization and a shrinking resource base. Previous production challenges in Jordan have been met largely through improvements in traditional agricultural inputs such as seeds and agrochemicals, but the present challenges need different solutions. Better management, which involves higher degrees of information and knowledge, is widely seen as a way to address these challenges. The potentials that ICT has to offer range from the sharing and re-use of data, research findings, lessons learned and best practices among R&D institutions to developing quick response mechanisms for agricultural and natural resources crises situations; from permitting informed decision making among the agricultural officials to sounder policy making among the legislators; from improving the extension delivery systems in the rural areas to bringing e-Commerce to the farmers.

Agricultural extension is about the application of information into knowledge and adoption, such as application of scientific research to agricultural practices through farmer training. ICT broadly defined as facilitation by electronic means the creation, storage, management and dissemination of information. Two types of ICT – old and new are practiced in extension service; the former refers to radio and TV which are low cost and require little skill to use while the latter forms of ICT include networked computers, satellite-sourced communication, wireless technology and the internet. Assume key factors explaining different ICT taken up by country are: per capita income; levels of education; the rural concentration; and dispersal of a country’s population.

The development of ICT in Jordan is fast and the Jordan’s IT capacity related to agro-information dissemination needs to be vastly improved at the local level to allow the effective horizontal transmission of information and communication between the farmers and institutions. However, technological challenges have still to be addressed such as the lack of trained communicators, poor ICT infrastructures high costs and limited access to ICTs and lack of relevant content.

1. INTRODUCTION

Today’s technological advancement have reached a level where a farmer can have access to information and tools to manage his mechanized field operations. They can now measure, evaluate and deal variability with infield (e.g. soil fertility, water availability and yield) that was known to exist previously but was not manageable, to his advantage. The ability to handle variations in productivity within a field and maximize financial return, reduce waste and minimize impact on the environment has always been the objective of an enterprising farmer, especially those with limited land resources and those who advocate sound agriculture practice.

This concept is not new. What is new is the ability to automate data collection and documentation and the utilisation of this information for strategic farm management decision in the field operations through mechanisation, sensing and communication technology. Such an approach in agriculture production management gives rise to what is now termed as Precision Farming (PF), Precision Agriculture (PA), Prescription Farming (Precision farming), Site Specific Agriculture (SSA), Soil Specific Crop Management (SSCM), Spatially Variable Crop Production (SVCP) etc.

‘Fertigation’ is the technique of supplying dissolved fertilizer to crops through an irrigation system (Haynes, 1985). When efficient irrigation system combined with both nutrients and water, it can lead to obtain higher yield and preferable quality desired marketable produce.

Often, side-dressings of straight solid fertilizers are found to be the management constraints. Most of the growers have the experience of how much the applied fertilizer is either washed from the soil in run-off or leached below the root zone.

Continuous small applications of soluble nutrients have the benefits like labour, due to fertilizer being placed uniformly around the plant roots and allow savings/economy rapid uptake of nutrients by the plant.

ABSTRACT

A number of secondary metabolites are produced by cyanobacteria involving the non-ribosomal peptide biosynthetic pathway. Some of these compounds have potential biotechnological applications, whereas others (the cyanotoxins) are undesired due to their toxicity to animals. The occurrence of toxic cyanobacterial blooms in freshwater bodies that are used as source for human consumption, recreation and irrigation are frequent nowadays due to increasing artificial eutrophication of these environments. It is important to monitor toxin-producing strains in order to prevent the adverse effects caused by their toxins to human and animal health. Thus, the development of rapid and sensitive methods for the detection of cyanotoxins is important as they could be useful to monitor water supplies and contribute for watershed monitoring strategies. Current methods include cell counting, microscopic identification and toxin analysis by biochemical and analytical techniques. However, in recent years, molecular biology techniques, such as polymerase chain reaction (PCR), have been used to amplify specific regions within biosynthetic genes for rapid and sensitive identification of toxic cyanobacteria. The aim of this chapter is to provide an update of cyanotoxin biosynthesis and discuss the advances and limitations of molecular biology regarding its application as indicative of cyanotoxin production.

ABSTRACT

The continuing depletion of the stratospheric ozone layer mainly due to release of man-made atmospheric pollutants such as chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) have resulted in the increase of solar ultraviolet-B radiation (UV-B; 280-315 nm) reaching to the Earth’s surface. UV-B is a small (less than 1% of total energy) but highly active component of the solar spectrum that can penetrate to biologically significant depths in lakes, ponds, rivers and oceans. It has been demonstrated that UV-B can cause wide ranging effects including mutagenesis, destruction of proteins/enzymes, inhibition of a number of vital metabolic processes and formation of thymine dimers in DNA leading to death of a number of organisms. A number of microbes including strict photoautotrophs always grow in lighted habitats and thereby always sense and face the stress of solar UV-B radiation. Similarly, humans are also exposed to varying levels of UV-B radiation depending upon the altitudes and latitudes of the location. A wide ranging effect of UV-B such as cataracts, skin cancer, immunosupression etc. has been reported in human. Damaging effects of increased UV-B radiation has also been shown in a number of microbes. These effects include inhibition of growth and survival, decrease in photosynthetic pigments, loss of PS II and RuBISCO activity, inactivation of nitrogenase enzyme and inhibitory effects on several other metabolic processes. Among photosynthetic pigments, phycobiliproteins seem to be the primary target of action since phycobilisomes are completely disintegrated after UV-B exposure. In this contribution an attempt has been made to put in perspective the main effects of UV-B radiation on microbes and human health.

ABSTRACT

Frankia is a gram-positive, microaerophilic, actinomycete that enters into symbiotic associations with a number of woody dicotyledonous plants called actinorhizal plants. Frankia can fix atmospheric nitrogen through such associations. The actinorhizal-Frankia association is beneficial for the environment, since it increases the fertility of soils. Extensive studies on the biochemical and molecular aspects helped in the classification of Frankia. PCR-RFLP studies of the 16S rRNA and the nif regions of Frankia revealed considerable information regarding the diversity of Frankia strains, isolated from different parts of the world. The completion of three whole genomes of Frankia has bolstered the study of the molecular organization of the genome. Comparative genomics study of the three complete genomes revealed that, the strains reflected the biogeographical history of the host plants they infected. Striking similarity in the codon usage patterns highlights the fact that they may have evolved as a unit. In the present review we highlighted the taxonomy of Frankia and the host plants, the Frankia-actinorhizal association, regulation of infectivity, biochemical and molecular characterization, phylogeny and genomics of Frankia and stressed the need for metabolomic study of the Frankia-actinorhizal association.

Plant body consists of numerous microscopic box like components called cells. The word cell has been derived from the Latin word cellula, meaning a small room. The descriptive term for this smallest living biological structure was coined by Robert Hooke in a book he published in 1665. When he compared the cork cells, he saw through his microscope to the small rooms monks lived in. The cell is the basic structural and functional unit of all known living organisms. It is the smallest unit of life, which is classified as a living thing and is often called the building block of life (Maton et al., 1997). It is defined as a mass of protoplasm surrounded by a membrane- the plasma membrane- within which complicated chemical reactions are going on.

In the last chapter, we have broadly introduced the concept of tracer hydrology and also the concepts of isotopes as tracers, their characteristics and measurement techniques. In this chapter let us see the basis of application of each group of isotope tracers, injected and environmental.

What are the different groups of isotope tracers used in hydrology and how are they classified?

The knowledge on the fate of pesticides, after application in the environment is useful to research workers associated with their safe and effective use. It is important to know whether a xenobioticwillpersist orwill be inactivated. Frequently persistence is desirable for sustained control. However, for many cases, rapid detoxificationof the compound may be required to avoid cumulative effects. Most of the pesticides are not very soluble in water andtheir oxidation orhydrolysis (or both)leads to formation of polar groups. Such reactions are called primary metabolic reactions, often, but not always. Theproducts ofthese primary reactions undergo secondary changes whereby they are conjugated with endogenous substances to form molecules that are more readily excreted. In higher animals, these changes facilitate the transportation of metabolites of pesticides in blood, which in turn leads to their eventual excretion.

Agriculture in India is not of recent origin, but has a long history dating back to Neolithic age (7500–6500 B.C). It changed the life style of early man from nomadic hunter of wild berries and roots to cultivator of land. Agriculture is benefited from the wisdom and teachings of great saints. The wisdom gained and practices adopted have been passed down through generations. The traditional farmers have developed the nature friendly farming systems and practices such as mixed farming, mixed cropping, crop rotation etc. The great epics of ancient India convey the depth of knowledge possessed by the older generations of the farmers of India. The modern society has lost sight of the importance of the traditional knowledge, which had been subjected to a process of refinement through generations of experience. The ecological considerations shown by the traditional farmers in their farming activities are now a days is reflected in the resurgence of organic agriculture.

Historical Perspective of Organic Farming

The available ancient literature includes the four Vedas, nine Brahnanas, Aranyakas, Sutra literature, Susruta Samhita, Charaka Samhita, Upanishads, the epics Ramayana and Mahabharata, eighteen Puranas, Buddhist and Jain literature, and texts such as Krishi-Parashara, Kautilya’s, Artha-sastra, Panini’s Ashtadhyahi, Sangam literature of Tamils, Manusmirit, Varahamihira’s Brahat Samhita, Amarkosha, Kashyapiya-Krishisukti and Surapala’s Vriskshayurveda. This literature was most likely to have been composed between 6000 B.C. and 1000 A.D. The information related to the biodiversity and agriculture (including animal husbandry) is available in these texts. Rig-Veda is the most ancient literary work of India. It believed that Gods were the foremost among agriculturists. According to ‘Amarakosha’, Aryans were agriculturists. Manu and Kautilya prescribed agriculture, cattle rearing and commerce as essential subjects, which the king must learn. According to Patanjali the economy of the country depended on agriculture and cattle-breeding. Plenty of information is available in ‘Puranas’, which reveals that ancient Indians had intimate knowledge on all agricultural operations. Some of the well known ancient classics of India are namely, Kautilya’s‘Arthashastra’; Panini’s ‘Astadhyayi’; Patanjali’s ‘Mahabhasya’; Varahamihira’s ‘Brahat Samhita’; Amarsimha’s ‘Amarkosha’ and Encyclopedic works of Manasollasa. These classics testify the knowledge and wisdom of the people of ancient period. Technical book dealing exclusively with agriculture was Sage Parashara’s ‘Krishiparashara’ in 1000 A.D. Other important texts are Agni Purana and Krishi Sukti attributed to Kashyap (500 A.D.).

Optimal quality organic produce that combines the desired textural properties, sensory shelf-life, and nutritional content results from the careful implementation of recommended production inputs and practices, careful handling at harvest, and appropriate postharvest handling and storage. This section will focus on an overview of general postharvest handling considerations unique to the marketing of registered or certified organic produce.

Maturity index for fruits and vegetables

The principles dictating at which stage of maturity a fruit or vegetable should be harvested are crucial to its subsequent storage and marketable life and quality. Post-harvest physiologists distinguish three stages in the life span of fruits and vegetables: maturation, ripening and senescence. Maturation is indicative of the fruit being ready for harvest. At this point, the edible part of the fruit or vegetable is fully developed in size, although it may not be ready for immediate consumption. Ripening follows or overlaps maturation, rendering the produce edible, as indicated by taste. Senescence is the last stage, characterized by natural degradation of the fruit or vegetable, as in loss of texture, flavour, etc. (senescence ends at the death of the tissue of the fruit). Some typical maturity indexes are described in following sections.

Owing to a varied agro-ecological and eco- edaphic condition prevalent in one or other part of the country, quite a large number of crops are grown in different parts of India. About 356 domesticated plant species having economic and botanical importance and 326 species with their wild relatives are found in Indian sub-continent. Besides the above, 9500 other plant species are also available. More than 50 different types of fruits, 50 different types of vegetables, 95 types of spices and condiments, medicinal and aromatic plants, plantation crops and ornamental crop plants have been recorded. To avoid confusion and identity, the horticultural plants are grouped into different categories based on similarity or dissimilarities. Grouping of the crop plants with similar characteristics is referred as classification.

Leafy vegetables are rich sources of provitamin-A, vitamin C and minerals like calcium, magnesium, iron, etc., They are the riches sources of roughes or fibres essential in human diet. The ICMR recommended dietary allowances of green leafy vegetables for adult women is 100g/day and men are 40g/day while for school children above 10 years it is 50g/day. Greens are rich in vitamins and minerals essential for healthy functioning of organs of body. Amaranth, beet leaf, spinach, fenugreek, etc., are the major leaf vegetables grown in India. In addition, a number of under-utilized annual crops are also grown as leaf vegetables in specific regions. Tender stems and leaves of a number of perennial crops are rich sources of vitamins and minerals and are used for cooking.

10.1. Amaranth (Amaranthus sp)

Amaranth is the most common leaf vegetable grown in India. Amarnath is an annual herb with erect growth and scarce to profusely branching habit. Stem is succulent and green or purple or mixed shades of these two. There are two sections in Amaranthus, viz., Amaranthus and Blitopsis. Majority of leaf cultivars grown in India belong to Amaranthus tricolor. Among the several kinds of greens Amaranthus occupy a special place because it has a large number of species grown in one or the other part of country.

Some of the important improved varieties released are CO-2 and CO-5 from TNAU, Coimbatore, Pusa Kiran, Pusa Kirti and Pusa Lal Choulia from IARI, New Delhi, Arka Arunima and Arka Suguna from IIHR, Bangalore. Amaranth are popular all over India by different names. While in northern parts it is popularly known as choulia, in south it is popularly called as keerai or cheera or koora or soppa. Abstract

Buffalo is the second major source of milk supply in the world. India, Pakistan, China, Egypt, Nepal, Myanmar, Italy, Sri Lanka, Iran, and Turkey are the top ten countries of highest buffalo milk production. In Asian countries, Riverine buffalo is mostly used milk purpose breed. Buffalo milk is a plentiful source of nutrients including fat, protein, essential fatty acids, essential amino acids, lactose and beneficial oligosaccharides, indispensable fat and water soluble vitamins, vital minerals. It contains more total solids, fat, protein, lactose and calcium as compared to cow milk. Buffalo milk possesses wide potential to be used in the production of a range of dairy products. On account of the differences in physico-chemical and biochemical properties between buffalo and cow milk, conventional processing technology and equipment for cow milk may not be suitable for buffalo milk processing. Changes and modifications must be considered for making certain products. This chapter aims to highlight the nutritional profile including amino acid profile, lipid profile and mineral composition; physico-chemical properties and potential of buffalo milk in the dairy sector.

Abattoir: An establishment where animals are butchered is known as abattoir. It is also known as slaughterhouse.

Abiotic: Abiotic means any factor which is not biological / a biological and especially there is no involvement of the organisms in synthesis of certain compounds.

 Abnormal milk: It is milk that is not smooth and homogenous but is flaky, ropy, stringy, slimy, water, discoloured or bad flavoured. It may be due to animal sickness or disease or due to excessive medicines given or uncleaned milk condition.

 Abomasum: It is the fourth stomach of the Ruminants which is lying close to the

Omasum or the third stomach, in which digestion gets completed by the supply of the digestive juice. It is also called Reed stomach, rennet stomach, rennet-bag, or reed

tripe and maw (Plate 1).

 Abrassive peeler: It is equipment comprising a rotating drum lined with carborandum (an abrasive material) in which certain vegetables like potato and ginger are tumbled and exposed to the abrasive action of the carborandum lining, thereby facilitating separation of peel from the vegetables (Plate 2).

General Consideration

Necropsy is examination of animal after death also known as post mortem examination. It helps in diagnosis of diseases and their control. It is said that “Necropsy is a message of wisdom from dead to living”. Necropsy include systemic examination of dead animal, recording of pathological lesions, their interpretation to make diagnosis of disease. Sometimes it is difficult to arrive any conclusion merely based on gross examination of dead animal. Then one should seek the help of laboratory examinations such as Histopathology, Microbiology, Immunology and Toxicology for confirmation.

A study was conducted to assess utilization pattern of ICT based Information by the livestock owners in using information communication technology with special reference to enhanced livestock production, in Mathura district of Uttar Pradesh. A total of 80 farmers were selected for study. The results showed that cent percent of the farmers had availability and accessibility of mobile phones as well as television. Majority of the livestock farmers are regularly using ICT tools for information dissemination. Majority (85.00%) of respondents were saying scientific information of livestock is available on mobile followed by (25.00%) of respondents said this scientific information are available on computer. Apart from these (68.75%) of respondent usage of mobile as ICTs tools for getting health related information of animals. Mobile phone was the most frequently and widely used while radio was least used ICT tool among the livestock farmers being used for the purpose of getting information.

Introduction

Improvement of wheat grain quality depends on the knowledge of quality requirements of different end-use products and the genetic components controlling different quality traits. In previous chapters we have dealt in-depth with quality requirements of different end-use products and their genetic components. Depending upon the goal of quality improvement, different strategies are adopted to improve wheat quality. It depends upon the number of genes controlling the traits as well as the availability of the simple methods for phenotyping the traits especially during early segregating generations. In addition stability analysis of the traits across the environments is essential before we go for breeding. Constraints in time, cost, and sample availability usually necessitate the use of predictive tests during early generations, followed by milling and baking tests on advanced lines that have met a number of agronomic, disease and predictive quality criteria. Knowledge of germplasm lines having specific quality traits is needed to initiate breeding for the improvement of wheat grain quality for different end-use products. The quality requirements of different major end-use products are provided in the following table (Table 1).

Introduction

Maize (Zea mays, or corn as it is known in some countries) is the principal cereal crop in tropical and subtropical regions throughout the world. The increasing use of maize as a staple food reflected the much higher yields per hectare, compared with wheat, rye and barley. Because maize was cheap, it became the dominant food and main source of dietary energy and protein for poor people, particularly those in rural and underprivileged segments of society. Maize is considered to be a native of the Americans. There are different views about the introduction of maize in India. One view is that maize was introduced into India by the Portuguese during the seventh century. Other view is that maize was introduced in Pre-Colombian era through the Atlantic Arabian trade route. This is supported by the more recent variability that has been observed in the maize collections made from the north eastern Himalayan region. However, the historic records regarding the cultivation of maize in India date back only to the Maratha Empire.

INTRODUCTION

The entire Himalayan region is vast and its diverse geographical grouping is unique and has complex ecosystem and occupies about 18% of the total geographical area of India. Indian Himalaya (27O 50' – 37O 06' N and 72O 30' – 97O 25' E) includes the parts of trans, north-west, west, central and east Himalaya and covers approximately an area of 4,19,873 Km2 with 2500 Km length and 240 Km width. The north-western Himalayas generally represent the Himalayan tract from Kumaon in Uttar Pradesh to Chitral in Gilgit. The Himalayan ranges situated in this region exhibit a diverse climate, topography, vegetation, ecology and land use pattern. The annual average rainfall varies from 8 cm in Ladakh to over 200 cm in some parts of Himachal Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh. The vegetation may vary from the scrub in the lower hills to arctic in the Greater Himalayas. The unique physiography, climatic conditions and soil characteristics of the area has resulted in a variety of habitats and a significant biological and cultural diversity. Along the altitudinal gradient (300-800 m.a.s.l) the vegetation varies from sub-tropical, temperate, sub-alpine to alpine types. It supports about 8000 species (47.06% of the total flowering plants of India) of which 30% are endemics, 10.2% trees, 8.44% wild edibles and over 15% medicinal (Samant and Dhar 1997).

There are many environmental risks associated with stubble burning. Thus the adoption of alternative straw management strategies is the best interest of all concerned. Key points when considering harvesting surplus cereal straw are: i) maintain sufficient crop residue on the land to protect the soil from erosion. This can be accomplished by keeping the stubble standing particularly after seeding; ii) harvest surplus crop residue with an appropriate frequency so as not to lower soil organic matter, soil fertility and crop productivity; and iii) fertilize crops according to soil test recommendations. The decision regarding the amount of straw to be removed should be based on the inherent value of the straw for maintaining the viability of the cropping system and protecting the soil resource versus the value of the straw for other uses (e.g., feed and bedding for livestock, industrial strawboard and feedstock for alternative energy forms). The value of retaining the straw on the land is difficult to determine but should be based on a number of factors such as: value of straw for soil erosion control; equivalent fertilizer value of the nutrients contained within the straw; value of the straw for building soil organic matter, soil quality, and soil tilth; and value of the straw for soil moisture conservation (Singh et al., 2003; Singh et al., 2009). At harvest, it is best to chop the straw as fine as possible and spread both the straw and chaff across in the field. A number of equipment have been developed for managing the straw in the field and discussed here.

The steadily-increasing human population has led to a rise in the demand for food. As more land comes under agricultural cultivation there will be more pressure on natural ecosystems. Climate change will affect agricultural yield directly because of aberrations in temperature and rainfall, and indirectly through changes in soil quality, pests and diseases. In particular, the yield of cereals is expected to decline in India, Africa, and the Middle East. As the temperature rises conditions will become more favourable for pests such as grasshoppers to complete a number of reproduction cycles and thereby increasing their population. In the higher latitudes (in the northern countries) agriculture will benefit with the rise in temperature as the winter season will be shorter and the growing seasons longer. This will also mean that pests that will move towards the higher latitudes as the temperatures rise. Extreme weather conditions such as high temperature, heavy rainfall, floods, droughts, etc. will also affect crop production.

Introduction

India is bestowed with a wide variety of agro-climatic conditions and has unique comparative advantage for growing almost all horticultural crops (fruits and vegetables) in the country. Horticulture has remained as a major sub-sector of agriculture and forms an integral part of food and nutritional security, employment generation and enhancing the farm income. The growing economic importance of these crops could be attributed to increasing demands in domestic as well as in overseas market. The total area under fruit is 6.10 million hectare and total production is 68.47 million tonnes which accounts for 11 per cent of the world total fruit production (Anonymous, 2009).

Since, there is a limited scope to enhance the horticultural production in traditionally growing areas, emphasis has to be laid on harnessing the potential of vast wasteland and dry land spread over more than half of the geographical area of the country. Dry and rainfed area constitutes a major share of wasteland and untapped land resource where several indigenous horticultural crop species can be commercially exploited to strengthen the agro-based industries and providing the livelihood to the masses.

Variation is inherent in almost all biological populations. In any science, research work, that is, the study and explanation of development changes in a phenomenon can be theoretical as well as experimental. Thus, in order to have solution to a problem the need arises to collect relevant information (called data) their analysis and interpretation through appropriate statistical tools. Statistical analyses help the biologists to draw appropriate conclusions. For instance, in Integrated Pest Management (IPM) the entomologists are primarily concerned with the estimation of insect-pest population, its distribution pattern over time and space, its relationship/fluctuation in population with the prevailing weather parameters and ultimately its control measure through the judicious use of chemicals, biological control agents and resistant varieties etc. There are two broad modes of collection of data:

Packing: 1. The material, which is enclosed in a stuffing box for the purpose of preventing leakage around a piston rod. 2. The act or process of inserting packing material. 3. Blocking up.

Paddy dehusker: An equipment to remove husk from paddy grain. It is also known as paddy Sheller.

Paddy separator: A machine, which is used for the separation of brown rice from the paddy brown rice mixture.

Paddy thresher, pedal operated: Equipment used for threshing of paddy crop, consisting of mainly a balanced cylinder with series of threshing teeth fixed on slats and worked by a pedal and gear drive mechanism.

Abstract

The Indian western Himalayas have wide variation in altitude, climate, soils, flora and fauna and socio-economic features. Livelihood options are limited due to small and fragmented holdings and inherent hill and mountain specificities. However, the physiographic and agro-climatic variability also offer opportunities of cultivating wide variety of profitable traditional and market oriented crops for exploiting niche advantage. Non-timber forest products play a vital role for livelihood security and demand that initiatives at local and governmental level are taken to develop and popularize technologies for collecting, processing and value adding to these products for commercial exploitation. Research and self help institutions are important in this context but strong regulatory policy framework is equally important. Further, need based and location specific trainings and demonstrations need to be organized to fill the knowledge void especially in traditional activities and emerging vocational enterprises. The national and international business concerns, engaged in exploiting natural resources such as hydro power and calcareous and limestone deposits should also engage more meaningfully in this task, under their corporate social responsibility (CSR) Livelihood generating scheme such as MNREGS should be extended to the non-conventional activities like weed eradication, management of wild (monkeys) and stray (cattle) animals that threaten livelihood security.

Abstract

Livelihood of ~80% of rural inhabitants depends upon agriculture that relies upon the prevailing environmental conditions such as water availability and temperature. If unfavorable to the crops, these conditions would impact production and productivity leading to food-insecurity. Various abiotic stresses are generated due to the physiography that includes altitude, topography, edaphic factors, water availability and ecosystem degradation. In spite of the environmental limitations, crops have survived suggesting operation of relevant adaptive mechanisms in the native species. Indeed, novel genetic mechanisms were present and these could be utilized to improve the plant productivity under stress conditions. Also there are issues on the management of abiotic stresses, which need to be addressed. The chapter presents framework and policies on sustaining agriculture production under the situations of abiotic stress to ensure production sustainability by protecting livelihood of the inhabitants. Western Himalaya was deliberately chosen as the focus for discussion.

Nano technology or Nano Science is a new branch of research though nano materials or Nano Structures are not new. In nature nano particles or nano materials are abundant .The idea of manipulation, production, controlling size and physico - chemical properties and application as well as making devices out of these nano materials is the subject of Nano Science & Nano Technology. As the name suggests, the domain of Nano starts from 10-9 m but especially the effect of nano structures exists mostly in the 1-100 nm regime where quantum - mechanical behiviour is prevalent. Molecules with more than 10 atoms fall into the nanometer range  and scientists were not able to visualize individual molecules and nano scale objects until the invention of some very powerful microscopes. Working in Nano domain requires two basic facilities -

Soil is the outer loose layer of earth consisting of layers of mineral material (regolith) whose properties differ from one another and these differences are largely due to the variation in biological activities. Soil micro-environment principally comprizes of inorganic particulates (sand, silt and clay) plus certain oxides and hydroxides, plant roots, organic matter, microbial biomass and aqueous and gaseous phases. The uneven distribution of these components provides a great variety of conditions from field to micropores. The interaction of physical and chemical factors contributes to the creation of varied soil habitat and hence determines the composition and activity of soil biota at a particular site and time. Over geological times, microorganisms have had great opportunity to become distributed worldwide. Such growth and development of microorganisms as well as species diversity is of considerable significance. The existing geographic distribution is reflective of long term adaptation of microorganisms to the various environmental conditions. The preferred environment of an organism is usually referred as ‘habitat’.
