The words ‘system’, ‘sub-system’ & ‘practice’ are commonly used in agroforestry literature. In a broad sense, a system is defined as a group of associated elements forming a unified whole and working together in a well-defined regular relation for a common goal. An agroforestry system refers to a type of agroforestry land-use that extends over a locality to the extent of forming a land utilization type of the locality. Sub-system and practice are lower-order terms in the hierarchy with lesser magnitudes of role, content and complexity. However, these terms are used loosely, and almost synonymously.

Classification of agroforestry systems is necessary in order to understand and provide a practical framework for evaluating systems and developing action plans for their improvement. Any classification scheme should satisfy the following criteria (Nair, 2008).

ABSTRACT

Trees play a crucial role in maintaining and regenerating soil fertility through the action of their roots and litter. Trees can also improve soil structure, water holding capacity, crop rooting volume and biological activity in soil by providing biomass. Quick growing species, especially of nitrogen fixing trees when combined with herbaceous crops enhance fertility status of the soil through litter contribution and nitrogen fixation. Nitrogen fixing trees and shrubs, grown in agroforestry systems, are capable of fixing about 50-100 Kg N ha^-1yr^-1. Use of agroforestry is also a viable option for enhancing soil organic carbon density. Soil organic carbon sequestration potential in soils of tropical forest ecosystems varies from 100 to 500 Kg C ha^-1 yr^-1. Improving soil organic carbon pool through agroforestry improves soil quality, biomass productivity and mitigates global warming by reducing the atmospheric concentration of greenhouse gases. Nutrient cycling is another way in which trees draw a large portion of nutrients from deeper soil layer and return it to the soil through crown crash, stem flow and litter fall. In a nutshell, for improving the soil quality, ecological balance and sustainability of agro eco systems , agroforestry is one of the best viable alternative land use system.

ABSTRACT

Scattered trees/shrubs in agricultural fields or grazing fields are common features of landscape in arid regions of India. These trees were considered as insurance to the people during drought years. In recent past importance of these trees in such areas had been recognized by the scientific world. Lot of research had been made and is continuing to identify and research the tree-crop combination. This paper reviews the tested agroforestry systems in arid region of country with particular reference to Rajasthan. Economic gains due to technology intervention in agroforestry system is also given.

INTRODUCTION

The people in the arid regions of India, since time immemorial has developed location specific agroforestry systems. The scattered trees / shrubs in the agricultural fields or grazing fields are common features of the landscape. Since the beginning of cultivation the farmers deliberately allow the trees /shrubs to grow with the crops. They have screened the trees / shrubs based on their utility. They have considered that these trees are insurance to them during drought years. These trees provided lean period fodder, fruits, vegetable, timber, fuel, fiber etc. as farmers knew that occurrence of drought is common phenomenon in Rajasthan and due to failure of rains the crops failed to grow or their production is abysmally low. In the recent past efforts have been made to identify existing agroforestry systems for different agro-ecological zones (Malhotra, 1984 ; Harsh et al., 1992 ; Saxena, 1997). Efforts have also been made to study the production systems under each agroforestry systems and also to improve the existing systems through technological interventions (Harsh and Tewari, 2003; Tewari et al., 2004; Harsh et al., 2004).

ABSTRACT

The practice of agroforestry in the hills and mountains of Himachal Pradesh is as old as the hill agriculture itself. Farmers are retaining trees on the farmlands for the multiple benefits they provide. The selection of the trees, their planting pattern and density is chosen in such a way that it had minimum effect on the associated crop. The present paper gives the prevalent agroforestry systems with their components in different agroclimatic zones of Himachal Pradesh along with their management practices. Adoption of landuse practices depends to a large extent on status of the farmer concerned. Paper presents the association between type of farmer and the corresponding agroforestry systems they adopt. Sustainability of agroforestry systems, their role in climate change and social and economic gain of agroforestry systems in hills had also been detailed. A comprehensive list of agroforestry components had also been appended as annexures.

INTRODUCTION

Farmers throughout the Indian Himalayas covering about 16 states partially or fully have nurtured trees on their farms and in the agricultural landscape both for production and protection benefits for millennia. Mountainous region like Himachal Pradesh located in western Himalayan range present wide range of tree growing practices and systems owing to the diverse physiographic and demographic mosaic.

The state is located between 30° 22’ 40” to 33° 12’ 40” N latitude and 75°47’ 55” to 79°4’ 20” E longitude and extends over a geographical area of 55673 km² which is 1.69 per cent of the country’s area and 10.5 per cent of the Himalayan landmass. This land locked state is bordered by Jammu and Kashmir in the north, Punjab and Haryana in the south–west and Uttaranchal in the south–east. In the north–east the state forms the international boundary with the Tibet. Agricultural landscapes are characterized by undulating topography wherein terraced fields are made on medium to steep slopes. Crop fields on sloppy lands are in general 5-10 m wide and 20-30 m long almost conical on both ends and wide in the middle. In valley areas and on lands with gentle to mild slopes (up to 40%) large sloping fields have been developed manually by the farmers where Government has undertaken land consolidation.

ABSTRACT

Madhya Pradesh is declared as mega diversity state in India. It also harbours diversity in human population as 1/4^th of its population is tribal. These tribal people are practicing agroforestry since time immemorial. The state is divided into 11 agro climatic zones. The paper provides the agroforestry systems and species suitable for these zones. The traditional practices and the innovative agroforestry systems developed are also given. Agroforestry systems that are suitable for problematic soil have been briefly discussed. Efforts of different institutes like TFRI, JNKV and projects like TDET, ORP on Agroforestry, AICRP on AF in developing different system and their recommendations are also provided in this paper.

Environment remained in its pristine purity and congeniality till man stayed in the hunting and food gathering stage. But, as he entered in the pastoral age and domesticated animals, he gradually passed from the nomadic stage to settled cultivation. When, he cleared the first patch of earth and upturned the first sod and lifted the first bucket of water, the long story of his interference with environment started. Clearing trees for farming, disturbing the moisture regimes and furrowing the land endangered the phenomenon of erosion leading on to the problem of reducing the soil fertility. At the same time, the art of Agroforestry emerged, though in the most rudimentary fashion, which in varying form and emphasis has continued till today. Coming to recent times, the increasing pressure on land as well as on forests, rising demand for fuel and fodder and finally the requirement of timber for multifarious purposes have strengthen the need of agroforestry as an alternate land use system especially at natural resource conservation front (Singh, 1999). Pathak (2000) opined that agroforestry is a land management system that optimizes the overall land productivity and reduces resources depletion through the utilization of positive interactions between crops-trees-animals in its temporal and spatial dimensions. In this way, agroforestry operates in a given socioeconomic frame work; it is not a static but a dynamic structure.

ABSTRACT

Agroforestry a sustainable land use system being practiced since long back through out the country. A diverse climatic, edaphic, and environmental conditions prevailing in the country has made it possible to practice different kinds of agroforestry systems. The local research organizations and individuals have undertook various studies for the betterment of the local agroforestry systems for getting higher yields to meet the need of food, fodder, fuel wood etc. It was found that Jowar+Teak+Papaya followed by Chilli+Teak+Papaya combination gave more economic returns compared to pure agricultural crop. Casuarina equisetifolia, Grevillea robusta, Dalbergia sissoo and Melia dubia have been found to be suitable for agroforestry systems in dryland. Coffee based agroforestry system and other tree-crop combination tried have been elaborated in this paper.

INTRODUCTION

Various experts and scientists working on agroforestry or involved in land use related sciences have defined agroforestry according to their individual understanding of what they call agroforestry.

“Agroforestry is sustainable management system for land that increases total production, combines agricultural crops, tree crops and forest plants and or animals simultaneously or sequentially and applies management practices that are compatible with the cultural patterns of the local population” (Chundawat and Gautham, 1993).

In the tropics, human beings underwent a transition from hunting/gathering to the use of domesticated plants and livestock. As a part of the process, they cut down trees, cleared the debris by burning and sowed crops in the ash enriched soil. It was the ‘slash-and-burn’ agriculture, a primary forerunner of the present-day agroforestry and a practice that might have originated in the Neolithic period, around 7000 BC.

There are innumerable examples of traditional land-use practices involving combined production of trees and agricultural species on the same piece of land in many parts of the world. Trees were an integral part of these farming systems and they were deliberately retained on farmlands to support agriculture. These practices are now known as agroforestry. However, the ultimate objective of these practices was not tree production but food production.

6.1 PROCESSES IN THE DOMESTICATION TECHNOLOGY

6.1.1 Introduction

In this programme trees that ensure security in food nutrition income, health, shelter and energy and a regenerated environment are domesticated. The mission of this is to increase; diversify and stabilize income, food and health strategies from practicing agroforestry approaches in general domesticating indigenous trees and their products particular.

Definition of Agroforestry

Basically agro forestry is the integration of agriculture forestry and sometimes animal production. This is a measure to maintain soil fertility, stop desertification and soil degradation. Foresters and agriculturalist have long recognized the important of these approached which have been incorporated into forestry law of severe countries. This does not only involve the planting of certain trees in farms but also the protection of certain trees species which are not to be felled or damaged during farming.

Agroforestry is a new name for a set of old practices. The farmers have been practicing agroforestry since ancient times. The general concept of agroforestry is to integrate trees and agriculture so as to create a more diversified landscape, while providing the producers with new environmental and economic benefits. In other words, agroforestry is a method of farming that allows trees and shrubs to grow along with crops and/or livestock, therefore blending agriculture and forestry in the same production system. In fact, man’s association with forest is much older than with agriculture. First man was a food gatherer and hunter in forests. Then he realized that the seeds of the fruits he collected germinated, grew into plants and bore the fruits again and thus man started to cultivate foods. Man’s desire to live in a community created settled agriculture.

Agroforestry is a very old practice, dating back many years. Tropical farmers have long been growing food crops, timber, and livestock in addition to taking advantage of the variety of products that may be obtained from natural wood lots. Indian culture is deeply rooted in its appreciation of trees and forests. The forests gave birth to the greatest aspects of Indian culture. The sages who developed Hindu philosophy resided in forests, living in perfect harmony with the natural world. In fact, trees have been discussed in our ancient literature so much that people were planting trees on their own in addition to crops for agriculture. Maharishi Kashyap’s book ‘Krishishukti’ divides land into multiple categories and designates regions that are suitable for tree planting. Particular sites for planting trees include all wet and dry regions as well as the vicinity of homes, wells, and tanks. However, foresters and farmers, who have historically worked within very strict disciplinary boundaries and focused on producing their favoured commodities - crops, livestock, and trees - used to disregard such integrated production systems that incorporate many disciplines.

Introduction

A number of experts have recognised three different stages in the march of man on the earth. These consist of: (i) When the civilization is dominated by the forests, (ii) When the civilization is overcoming the forest and (iii) When the civilization is dominating obstacles caused by forests. Now a days, Indian Himalayas including that of Jammu and Kashmir is passing through the third stage i.e., to the point of destroying itself in the process.

Deforestation’s relentless march is stripping the Jammu and Kashmir Himalayas bare of its forest cover. From the majestic coniferous forests of Pir Panjal Himalayas to the deciduous and mixed canopy of subtropical forests the story is tragically the same i.e.. the indiscriminate destruction of forests that could turn the state into vast and inhospitable waste land. Hence to sustain and prosper the civilization, the forests must be saved from being further destroyed.

To reduce or to minimize the deforestation, the Social Forestry Project and Agroforestry System came to fore. The primary objective of Social Forestry is to increase supplies of fuel wood and fodder in rural area through plantation on community waste lands, degraded forest lands and on private lands through farm forestry (Patnaik, 1995-96). The latter i.e., Agroforestry is now much more widely used subject than the mere production of wood and food. In the changing scenario of the environmental degradation and ecological imbalance as a result of degradation of the forest resources of the country, agroforestry consists of inviting the prime attention of forests for upliftment of both environment and ecology vis-a-vis to enhance agricultural/horticultural and livestock production. In fact, agroforestry came as a new’ name during the year 1978. Since then, the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), New Delhi, has developed a vast network of agroforestry in all 36 centres of Agroclimatic Zones (Tejwani, 2008). However, Dr Tejwani started working with agroforestry during 1957 on fodder fuel plantations and trees on farm boundaries. Hence, agroforestry must be included in the agriculture.

Similarly, it is to be decided which technologies are required for refinement and improvement of the existing agroforestry practices. Diagnosis and Design (D & D) is a systematic and objective methodology developed by International Centre for Research in Agroforestry (ICRAF) to initiate, monitor and evaluate agroforestry programmes. D & D is based on the philosophy that knowledge of the existing situation (diagnosis) is essential to plan and evaluate (design) meaningful and effective programmes in agroforestry research for development. The methodology plays a strategic role in all the phases of the agroforestry research process. D & D in agroforestry is unique and it has been specially developed for the following purposes.

When perennial woody and herbaceous components are grown together on the same piece of land their performance would largely depend on their ability to share various growth resources in a given environmental situation. Thus, careful management practices for the components are required to establish a successful agroforestry system. The characteristics of the trees and crops, and their interactions, can be modified with good management practices in order to take advantage of the positive characteristics and minimize the effects of the negative ones. Effective and efficient agroforestry management may be divided into two groups; tree management and agricultural crop management.

5.1 Introduction

Weather is one of the most important factors which determine success or failure of agricultural production. It effects every growth phases and development of plant. During the growing period of the crop, any variability in the weather condition such as delay in monsoon, excessive rainfall, drought, flood, heat or cold wave affects the crop growth and finally reduces the quality and quantity of crop yield. These losses due to weather hazards can be reduced by taking proper crop management in time and by applying accurate weather forecast. Weather forecast also provides guidance for selection of crops and varieties best suited to the local climatic condition. 

The science of agrometeorology has great practical utility in protection against, or avoidance of adverse climate risks of crop production. Agrometeorological information can be used in efficient land use planning, determining suitable crops for a region, risk analysis of climate hazards and profit calculations in farming, production and harvest forecasts, and in adoption of farming methods and choice of farm machinery. Meteorological instruments are the equipments used to sample the state of the atmosphere at a given time. Meteorology does not use much laboratory equipments but relies more on field-mode in situ observation and remote sensing equipments. Rain was one of the first weather parameter to be measured historically. Two other accurately measured weather-related variables are wind and humidity.

The District-wise weekly agroadvisory service based on medium range weather forecasting (3 to 10 days) has been made operational by the State Agricultural Universities in collaboration with National Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecasting (NCMRWF), India Meteorological Department. The Agroadvisory Bulletin (AAB) contains three parts. The first part of AAB consists of weather events occurred during the past week and weather forecast for three days ahead. These forecasts provide expected weather on cloud amount, rainfall, average wind speed, wind direction, maximum and minimum temperatures and cumulative rainfall. The second part contains the factual information on the varieties of crops, their state and stage, ongoing agricultural operations and occurrence of insect pest and diseases of crops. The final and third part of the AAB provides information on agroadvisory to be taken up as farm operations during the ensuing week. The AABs are prepared by the Agrometeorological Field Units (AMFUs) in consultation with the scientists belonging to various disciplines and Agricultural Officers of the locality. Such AABs are being prepared and issued in English as well in local languages. The AMFUs functioning across the Country (more than 130 AMFUs) attempt the weekly agroadvisory service very effective and operational from time to time with simple models developed in the concerned universities for sustenance of crop production against the ill effects of climate change/variability to a considerable extent. Agroadvisory service is based on weather forecasting and agromet products play a major role in AABs for the benefit of farmers. As such the AABs revolve mostly around agronomic practices rather than based on agromet products. Some of the typical tools prepared in Kerala Agricultural University are quoted for guidance and such models may be implemented wherever they are relevant for betterment of Agromet Advisory Services as a part of climate risk management in Agriculture.

INTRODUCTION

The agriculture in north eastern hill region of India is mainly rainfed in nature and shifting cultivation, known as jhuming, is the dominant farming system. The shifting cultivation is detrimental to both soil and vegetation as it is connected to heavy soil and nutrient losses when practised in steep slopes. The burning and slashing operations are responsible for reduced floral and faunal diversity in the region. It is a well known fact that climate is the main driving factor that governs the sustainability of other natural resources such as land, water and vegetation. So far the NE region gets abundant rainfall for survival of the crops at least during the kharif season. The rainfall starts early March and continues up to the late October. The jhum cultivators follow the rainfall trend and get their field ready for sowing of seeds by early March itself so that vegetative stage of crops gets plenty of rainwater for growth and development. Due to increased population pressure, the hills of NE region are over exploited and the jhum cycle has been reduced from 10-12 years to 4-5 years now-adays. Hence the soils do not get sufficient time to revitalize it and are subjected to more and more exploitation and get degraded permanently.

Meteorology is derived from the Greek word meteoro which means above the earth’s surface; i.e., the atmosphere. The state of the atmosphere experienced at a given time, in any location on the surface of the earth is known as weather. Thus, meteorology is the scientific study of the atmosphere or the weather. It is a branch of physics dealing with atmosphere and it is often quoted as the ‘physics of the lower atmosphere’. The main focus of meteorology is to understand the weather processes and forecast the weather. Solar radiation, the air mass and moisture are the three key ingredients that make up weather. The exchange of heat, moisture and momentum between the earth’s surface and the atmosphere determines the characteristic of weather. The observable weather events are known as meteorological phenomena and are defined by a set of variables called weather elements. Atmospheric temperature, atmospheric pressure, humidity, precipitation, cloudiness, wind and visibility, etc. are examples of such weather elements. The weather elements are not separate entities. They are closely related with each other and are highly variable in nature. Meteorology explains and analyses the changes of these weather elements.

The major subdivisions of meteorology are dynamic meteorology (or atmospheric dynamics) and physical meteorology (or atmospheric physics). The dynamic meteorology is concerned with the analysis and interpretation of the three-dimensional, time-varying, macro scale motions and energy transformations in the atmosphere. The science of dynamic meteorology is meant to develop models based on the hydrodynamic and thermodynamic equations. The physical meteorology is concerned with the processes that alter the physical properties and the chemical composition of air parcels as they move through the atmosphere.

Food, clothing and housing are the three basic needs of a man. After that the additional requirement of a man are personal health and happiness. These can be considered as human factors. The material factors are agriculture, industry, trade, water resources management, insurance.

The continuous increase in population made the planners, researchers and cultivators to increase the food production to feed all the people. So, the second green revolution has to follow. Due to increase in air temperature and climate change, the cultivation practices to change based on the changing climatic condition. The study of climate is not only necessary for food production, but also needed for transportation, storage, value addition and consumption.

Housing provides the internal controlled climate to the human being. It provides comfort to the inhabitants. 1. Introduction

Zinc is an important micro-nutrient for human population and its deficiency can cause major diseases, mortality and thus becomes a major challenge in public health care systems of the developing nations. It was estimated that a major part of population is affected with deficiency of zinc (Combs, 2001) which causes lower growth, abnormal or decrease in infant birth, lowers the energy of body, decreases the power to lower the deadly infections, increase the mortality rate in children etc. (Gibson 2012; Krebs et al., 2014). Zinc also catalyzes various enzymes such as RNA polymerase, superoxidase dismutase and helps in working efficiency of cellular proteins. 

A. Agronomic Considerations for Good Experimentation

For laying out of any experiment (Short / long term) at on-station and on farmers field, some of the agronomic considerations are very important for better results using experimental designs. Therefore, these are discussed here in this chapter.

Crop nutrient management in the climate change scenario is carried out with the basic understanding of nutrient concentrations in soils, plants and their transformations but these strategies might not apply under changed climate conditions where there is an overall change in the environment. It is understood that nutrient acquisition by plants from the soil is closely associated with overall biomass and strongly influenced by root foraging area. It is speculated that change in soil factors due to climate change could restrict root growth and nutrient stress would also occur. Plant size may also change but nutrient concentration may not change; therefore, nutrient removal will scale with growth. The interaction of mineral behavior in the soil with global climate change variables is poorly understood.

The word agronomy has been derived from two Greek words, agros and nomos having the meaning of field and to manage, respectively. Literally, agronomy means the “art of managing field”. Technically, it means the “Science and economics of crop production by management of farm land”.

THE AGRO-ECOSYSTEM CONCEPT

An agro-ecosystem is a site of agricultural production farm, for example- understood as an ecosystem. The agro-ecosystem concept provides a framework with which to analyze food production systems as wholes, including their complex sets of inputs and outputs and the interconnection of their component parts.

Because the concept of the agro-ecosystem is based on ecological principles and our understanding of natural ecosystems, the first topic of discussion in this chapter is the ecosystem. We examine the structural aspects of ecosystems their parts and the relationships among the parts and then turn to their functional aspects how ecosystems work. Agro-ecosystems are then described in terms of how they compare, structurally and functionally, with natural ecosystems.

‘Agroterrorism’, also known as ‘agriterrorism and agricultural terrorism’, is a malicious attempt to disrupt or destroy the agricultural industry and/or food supply system of a population through “the malicious use of plant or animal pathogens to cause devastating disease in the agricultural sectors”. It is closely related to the concepts of biological warfare, chemical warfare and entomological warfare, except carried out by non-state parties. It refers to a hostile attack towards an agricultural environment including infrastructures and processes in order to significantly damage national or international political interests.

The terms ‘agroterrorism, agroterror and agrosecurity’, were coined by veterinarian pathologist Corrie Brown and writer Esmond Choueke in September 1999 as a means to spread the importance of this topic.

In human resource management AI-enabled interview analysis improves candidate selection by uncovering hidden patterns and mitigating biases, leading to more objective decisions (Rajneesh, Panwar. 2023). Additionally, by increasing productivity, efficacy and creativity, the incorporation of AI into business strategy transforms decision-making; nonetheless, ethical considerations and human oversight are essential for responsible implementation (Gonesh, C., et. al., 2023).

Selection is an important activity in all the breeding programmes. Different types of selections i.e. mass selection, progeny selection and cyclic selection etc. are used depending on the mode of pollination of the crop species, the predominant gene action and the breeding objectives. The efficiency of selection largely depends on the extent of genetic variability present in the population and the heritability of the character. Selection is more effective for character with high heritability than those having low heritability. Breeding for higher or better yield is the breeding objective for most of the breeding programmes, but it has low heritability. Yield is considered to be complex or super character which is influenced by many components or contributing traits both in positive and in negative directions. Due to the fact that it has low heritability, selection is done for the yield contributing traits so that yield may be increased through selection. Prior to selection for yield contributing traits, it is always beneficial to study the extent and type of relationship between the character and yield. There are different procedures which aid in the isolation of superior yielding genotypes from genetically variable populations by providing information on indirect selection for yield. These methods are discussed in the following content.

21.1 Introduction

The air (=gas or swim) bladder, also known as the fish maw, is a tough sac-like structure with an overlying capillary network. It develops as an outgrowth from the oesophageal region and is found in bony fish. It demonstrates a wide range of development, structure, and function in various fish. It is usually a hydrostatic organ that controls buoyancy, allowing the body to remain at the current water depth without having to expend energy swimming. It is similar to a diver’s buoyancy compensation device (BCD). It also serves as a resonating chamber for producing or receiving sound and is used as an air-breathing organ.

Air pollution is the introduction of chemicals, particulate matter, or biological materials into the atmosphere that cause harm or discomfort to humans or other living organisms, or cause damage to the natural environment. The concern to determine the importance of the airflow as a possible source of contamination in dairy and food industry is growing, because the airborne dust particles can introduce foreign matter including microbial contaminants into the dairy products. Maintenance of air quality in a dairy factory plays an important role and is very much monitored by controlling the temperature, humidity and particle concentration. Air quality control is required for the comfort and safety of employees. To reduce the possibility of contamination in products it is necessary to impose additional controls on air quality. Airborne contamination can be controlled by air filtration.

AIR

Air is a non-homogenous mixture of gases, solid particles, and liquids; It consists of gases and particles with small settling velocity that exhibit stability in a gravitational field. Atmosphere has four major layers Troposphere from 0-17km., Stratosphere from 17-50km., Mesosphere from 50-90 km. and Ionosphere is from 90-100 km. (95% of the air by weight is contained in the Troposphere i.e. from 0-17 km).

12.1. INTRODUCTION

Air is polluted when it contains enough unhealthy particles and gases to harm human beings, animals, plants and even objects such as building and statues. Air pollutant may present as solid, liquid or gas form. Industrial revaluation in the 19th and 20th centuries leads faster increase in concentration of air pollutants in the atmosphere. The most important air pollutants that damage the plants’ growth and development, subsequently the economic yields of crop plants are ozone (O₃), nitrous oxides (NO₂ and NO), carbon monoxide (CO), ammonia (NH₄), peroxiacetyl nitrate (PAN), sulphur dioxide (SO₂), hydrogen fluorides (HF), particulate matters (cement dust, magnesium-lime dust, carbon shoot etc.), smoke etc. Burning of hydrocarbons in motor vehicle engines gives rise to CO₂, CO, SO₂, and NO in varying proportions and ethylene (C₂H₄) as well as other hydrocarbons. Industrial plants release SO₂, H₂S, NO₂ and HF into atmosphere. Hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂) is another potentially injurious molecule, can form by the reaction between O₃ and naturally release volatiles (terpenes) from forest trees.
