ABSTRACT

Insect societies such as those of ants, bees, wasps and termites are characterized by reproductive division of labour and cooperative brood care. Thus these societies consist of one or a smallnumber of reproductives (usually only queens but also kings in the case of termites) and a large number of sterile or nearly sterile workers

Fungi are very primitive eukaryotic microbe on the earth which are evolved with the earth and its atmosphere. These may be the ancestor of the plants in the process of evolution (Borkar, 2001). The group of ancestral fungi is thought to be represented by the present day chytridiomycota, although the Microsporidia may be an equally ancient sister group. The first major steps in the evolution of higher fungi were the loss of the chytrid flagellum and the development of branching, aseptate fungal filament, which occurred as terrestrial fungi diverged from water molds 600 million to 800 million years ago. The easily recognizable mushroom fungi probably diversified 130 million to 200 million years ago, soon after flowering plants became an important part of the flora and well before the age of dinosaurs. A relatively recent evolutionary radiation perhaps 60 million to 80 million years ago, of anaerobic chytridiomycota occurred as grasses and grazing mammals became abundant, the chytrid fungi serve as symbionts within the rumen of such animals, thereby enabling the grazing mammals to digest grasses.

Fungi have been known to cause plant diseases in crops and plants of economic importance to humans since time immemorial. Ancient agriculture witnessed these plants’ sufferings but thought it was due to the curse of God on humans. The curiosity to know the causes of these crops and plant suffering developed the science of plant pathology and enlightened our understanding of the causes of these diseases. Among different plant pathogens, fungi occupy the prime position to cause plant diseases.

Fungi are one of the major causes of crop damage which affect crop yield, quality and revenue. Therefore to control these fungal diseases, fungicidal crop protection products are used at different stages of crop growth. Many of our current fungicides produce excellent results with respect to efficacy, crop quality, food safety, and improved cost/profit ratios of agricultural production.

This concluding chapter, “The Future ECG: Predicting a Vibrant Agricultural Heartbeat,” therefore adopts a global lens, acknowledging that the quest for accurate and timely monsoon forecasts is a shared endeavor with worldwide implications. Important issues include poor interfacial bonding, nanoparticle dispersion, variability of natural fibres, mechanical and thermal limitations, processing difficulties, cost, scalability, and commercialization barriers. Nanoparticle reinforcement is explored as a means of improving tensile strength, stiffness, thermal stability, electrical conductivity, and barrier properties. The digital age has revolutionized the way we live, work, and interact with the world around us. Digital transformation has become a crucial imperative for businesses of all sizes and industries, enabling them to not only adapt to the changing landscape but also thrive in it. (De Lucas,2021). The rapid advancement of technologies such as 5G, cloud computing, big data, artificial intelligence, IoT, and blockchain has opened up a plethora of opportunities for enterprises to enhance their operations, improve customer experiences, and gain a competitive edge. (Anjali et al, 2023). Businesses can increase their reach, automate jobs, obtain insights from data, personalize services, and streamline procedures by utilizing these technologies. They must reconsider their business models and implement more flexible and agile strategies in response to these exponential changes. (Bansal et al, 2020, Fenech et al, 2019).

GPCRs are integral membrane proteins that contain seven transmembrane (TM) α-helices, with a short cytoplasmic Helix 8 interconnected to the TM7 and the cytoplasmic C terminal. The amino terminal is extracellularly disposed.

The 7 TM helices are interconnected by 3 extracellular and 3 intracellular loops. On the extracellular side between TM3 and TM4 is located a conserved disulphide bond. GPCRs being allosteric proteins, agonist binding at one site that is accessed from the extracellular space and termed the orthosteric site, promotes allosteric binding to another partner, a heterotrimeric G protein at the cytoplasmic side. Agonist binding not only promotes binding of the receptor to a G protein, but the affinity of the agonist for the receptor is increased by the G protein.

The concept of gene has undergone several refinements since its discovery in 1866 by Mendel. Most genes encode one polypeptide and can be operationally defined by the complementation test. The complementation or cis-trans test provides an operational definition of the gene. It is used to determine whether mutations are in the same gene or in different genes. Intragenic complementation may occur when a protein is a multimer containing at least two copies of one gene product. The concept of gene has evolved from a bead on a string, not divisible by recombination or mutation to a sequence of nucleotide pairs in DNA encoding one polypeptide chain. The unit of genetic material not divisible by recombination or mutation is the single nucleotide pair. Historically several experimental developments have occurred to facilitate understanding of the structure and function of gene and these are briefly described in a chronological order as follows to have better understanding of the gene concept as it evolved. However, before discussing evidences supporting various gene concepts, it is better to summarize important stages in the evolution of the gene concept.

3.1 Overview of the Global Carbon Market in Pre-Kyoto Protocol Phase

At the First COP in Berlin in 1995, the UNFCCC launched a pilot phase of projects to build experience and “learning by doing”. The pilot phase was termed Activities Implemented Jointly (http://unfccc.int/program/coop/aij/aij_np.html). Under the Activities Implemented Jointly, Annex I Parties could implement projects in other countries that reduced emission of greenhouse gases or enhanced removals of sinks. The number of projects registered under Activities Implemented Jointly has been growing since its launch and as of 2002 (the latest report available) there were 157 projects – 45 percent of which are in developing countries. The total amount of money invested by private sector companies as of 2000 was about $160 million. Because of the expectations that sink projects would be included as a mechanism for achieving targets, several pilot projects were voluntarily implemented involving mostly private sector entities (e.g., electric utility companies, oil companies and environmental non-governmental organisations). Between the beginning of 1996 and the end of 2003, 76 transactions involving carbon sequestration in the LULUCF sector were signed, representing 40 million tCO2-e. Relative to all of the carbon transactions that took place over the same period, sink projects accounted for 21 percent of the total number and 23 percent of the total volume. In volume terms, carbon sequestration projects were the single largest project category, and more than three-quarters of this volume was transacted between 1996 and 1999.

1. INTRODUCTION

Increasingly, in recent years, we hear of new technologies for the production of clean energy or, as they say now in common usage, from renewable energy sources, there are many sources of renewable energy, but certainly the ones that deserve special attention are those derived from algae. Today, thanks to innovative systems called photobioreactors, you have a way to start producing, though unfortunately still a small part, the amount of clean energy from algae and various biological processes that develop. The photobioreactor is one of the most innovative systems of the 21st century, and is paving the way for a new concept of energy utilization , although the fossil fuel (oil of course) continues to lead the way, even if you are aware of the drastic and continuous decrease the world’s resources. Although still under investigation, but there are many aspects that allow, thanks to special engineering studies , already now create systems suitable for the production of energy directly from algae , while biofuels obtained from the latter, there are several studies and tests , which aim to further lower production costs, in order to bring them at par or even below the threshold of current fossil fuels. In addition, these photo bioreactors, allow to produce, under controlled conditions, products and raw materials from the algae for food and non-food market, often providing a viable substitute, nutritious and natural, to all those raw materials that are harmful to human health and animals, especially in the food and health sectors.

The ‘greenhouse effect’ earns its name from the rough similarity between the way it works and the way the glass of a greenhouse works. Glass too, is transparent to short-wave radiation but opaque to long-wave radiation, so the greenhouse traps heat.
Carbon dioxide plays a critical role in controlling the Earth’s climate because as an aerosol it absorbs and reflects or scatters incoming radiation on the one hand and absorbs and reradiates outgoing infrared radiation on the other. This latter phenomenon results in what is popularly called the Greenhouse Effect, an analogy to what happens in a greenhouse.

The fungi are present everywhere. They are in the soil and soil crust, in atmospheric air, in sea and pond water, rivers and water streams, and on the surfaces of almost all the material ,whether living or otherwise, on affected food stuff , vegetables and food grains, on body of human beings, animals, birds and fishes, on plant surfaces, on leathers and clothes in damp weather, on house walls and ceiling in damp conditions, on railway coaches and buses roofs having water leakage and dampness, in caves, on garbage and decomposing material etc. The fungal spores are present everywhere, however the fungal growth occurs where the congenial conditions for their growth is available.

Although “e-agriculture” and other initiatives to bridge the rural digital divide were already underway around the world, the Community (and the term “e-agriculture”) emerged following the World Summits on the Information Society in 2003 and 2005. The WSIS global participants recognized that when addressing the challenges of the digital divide, particularly in the context of rural livelihoods, problems extend beyond technology. It is a multifaceted problem characterized by ineffective knowledge exchange and information content management, as well as a lack of human resources, institutional capacity, and sensitivity to gender and the diverse needs of various groups. With WSIS participants identifying and naming “e-agriculture” as a key action line to address the Millennium Development Goals, the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) was tasked with leading the development and subsequent facilitation activities that would truly engage stakeholders at all levels.

The term “artificial intelligence” (AI) refers to a wide variety of theories and technologies that are used to the resolution of issues characterized by a high level of logical or algorithmic complexity. It cuts across a wide range of f ields, such as mechanical modeling, software engineering, data science, and statistics. Many artificial intelligence (AI) technologies, which first appeared in the 1950s, have lately been refined or extended thanks to advances in computer performance. Recent advancements have been made possible by the creation of interfaces between artificial intelligence and other fields of study, such as biomedicine, and by the collection of enormous amounts of data from a variety of fields, notably those related with the healthcare industry. First, Artificial intelligence helps with situational awareness, which is relevant in animal health and animal husbandry because it allows for the detection of patterns like repeated sequences of observations, forms like a protein, and signals like increased mortality especially in comparison to a baseline at various scales. A third option is computer-based decision making, or more practically, human decision support via knowledge - based systems, diagnostic support, and resource allocation, for instance.

This generation is well known for its tech-savviness and strong social and environmental consciousness and responds uniquely to online marketing strategies. E-commerce platforms are pivotal in shaping Gen Z’s health and sustainability practices. They achieve this by providing a wide variety of wellness-oriented products and information, which assists in educating and motivating consumers about healthy lifestyle. Additionally, these platforms feature eco-friendly products and promote sustainable practices, aligning the Gen Z’s growing concern for environmental issues. The choice of this topic was inspired by a few things such as health consciousness and sustainable consumption. This interdisciplinary topic combines insights from consumer psychology, digital marketing, and environmental science, offering valuable implications for businesses and policymakers aiming to engage this tech-savvy generation effectively. The focus on this emerging area of research helps fill gaps in existing literature and provides strategic guidance for optimizing digital commerce strategies. Case studies on MyFitnessPal and Nike’s Move to Zero initiative demonstrate how an e-commerce platform can promote health awareness and sustainable consumption among Gen Z. This topic will aid businesses and marketers in customizing their online strategies to align with Gen Z’s emphasis on health and sustainability. It assists policymakers and environmental organizations in formulating improved practices and regulations for responsible consumption. Anybody can trade shares on the stock market, which is an open global market. GDP is the total amount of profit produced in a country over a given period. To develop products and services in a country to a plausible degree, it is helpful to measure the monetary policy of completed goods and services that are acquired for a single end consumer. It comprises all earnings generated inside a country’s borders. The GDP of any nation may be used to determine the size and state of that nation’s economy. GDP is a measure of a nation’s total production and performance and is used as a gauge of economic health. Strong GDP growth frequently signals more consumer spending, corporate profitability, and company expansion, all of which are positive indicators of optimistic mood in the stock market. On the other hand, a slow GDP growth rate might undermine investor confidence and cause stock values to decline.

Abstract

Beautiful Earth is the only planet of Solar system which supports life due to presence of water, air and favourable temperature. The surface atmosphere is warmed by absorption of solar ray due to green house effect, without which the average temperature of Earth’s atmosphere would have been –73^ºC and the ocean would have been frozen. Since the year 1850, when industrialization started in many countries, the concentration of different green house gases in the atmosphere have been increased remarkably (CO₂ – 34%, CH₄ – 145%, Fluorocarbons – 100%). Global warming, the increase in the average temperature of the Earth’s near surface air and oceans, is caused mainly due to increase in air pollution, green house gas generation and deforestation. Human activities are found more responsible for rapid global warming in last 50 years. Deadly storms, unbearable heat waves, high day-night temperature, Ice sheet melting in polar regions, glaciers receding at alarming rate, frequent wild fires in forest, coastal areas inundation, drinking water shortage and desertification are the serious impacts of global warming. It is a great concern to the Policy Makers to stop human activities responsible for global warming without jeopardizing technological development of society. Global warming has triggered the complex chain reactions : Increase in surface temperature – reduction in the permafrost and tundra areas.

Abstract

The Western Desert covers approximately 700,000 km², which is more than two-thirds of the total area of Egypt. This immense desert, to the west of the Nile, spans the area from the Mediterranean Sea to the Sudanese border. The Great Sand Sea lies within the desert’s plain and extends from Siwa Oasis to Jilf al Kabir plateau. Scarps and deep depressions exist in several parts of the Western Desert. Limited agricultural production, the presence of some natural resources, and permanent settlements are found in the western desert oases (Siwa, Bahariya, Farafra, Dakhla and Kharga), all of which have fresh groundwater. Siwa Oasis, close to the Libyan border, is isolated from the rest of Egypt but has sustained life since ancient times. The Siwa’s cliff-hung Temple of Amun was renowned for its oracles for more than 1,000 years. Herodotus and Alexander the Great visited the temple in the pre-Christian era. The Oasis is a natural depression about 23 meters below sea level. It covers an area of about 1050 km² (2,50,000 acres); of which only 87.95 km² (20,940 acres) are currently cultivated. The total numbers of inhabitants in Siwa were 21,482 in 2006. The main activity in Siwa oasis is agriculture which depends on the groundwater that outflows from about 1199 wells and springs giving a total annual discharge of about 255 million cubic meters from which, about 222 million cubic meters are lost due to evaporation and evapotranspiration, while the remainder goes to the natural lakes of Siwa Oasis. This has led to a continuous rise in the water table level and soil salinity.

ABSTRACT

Industrial and agricultural activities and the disposal of waste products have resulted in the contamination of many terrestrial environments. Industrial effluents often contain considerable amount of potentially toxic compounds such as Cd, As, Pb and Hg. Due to their small size, which provides a large contact area that can interact with the surrounding environment, microorganisms are the first biota showing the impact of toxic compounds. Microorganisms being in intimate contact with the soil environment are considered to be the best indicators of soil pollution. In general, they are very sensitive to low concentrations of contaminants and provide a rapid response to soil perturbation. Rhizobium spp. are ubiquitous gram-negative soil bacteria that have a profound scientific and agronomic significance due to their ability to establish nitrogen-fixing symbiosis with legumes, which is of major importance to the maintenance of soil fertility and to feed livestock and populations in many developing countries. Therefore, the present work aimed to evaluate the impact of heavy metals on Rhizobium populations isolated from different locations contaminated with heavy metals. In order to reach this goal some physicochemical parameters that influence metal bioavailability were determined, as well as their concentrations in soil. Cadmium tolerance of Rhizobium isolates was screened in artificial media and the highest cadmium concentration allowing growth was defined as the maximum resistance level (MRL). The heavy metal tolerance variability found among Rhizobium isolates, suggests that beyond basic metabolic machinery also exist variations that allow isolates to display distinct tolerance responses to Cd stress. To better understand Rhizobium cadmium tolerance, wall-bound and intracellular Cd was determined. Sensitive and moderately tolerant isolates showed low intracellular Cd amounts when compared to extremely tolerant isolates, which were able to withstand intracellular Cd concentrations 40 times higher. Lipopolysaccharides (LPS) bind cations unspecifically, so they constitute the initial defence mechanism to heavy metals since they sequestrate cations and therefore prevent their entry into the cell. LPS quantity varied significantly between isolates. LPS increases were observed in most sensitive, moderately tolerant and tolerant isolates, evidencing an attempt of cells to adjust to cadmium entry. These results may be of great importance for understanding how Rhizobium persists in contaminated soils. They also provide important data to the development of bioremediation processes and to the improvement of soil productivity.

The cascading impacts of acidification jeopardize the biodiversity, productivity, and resilience of marine ecosystems, including fisheries that millions depend on for food and income. Factors such as ocean warming, deforestation, and natural CO2 emissions exacerbate acidification. Lignocellulosic Biomass (LCB) generated from the global consumption of fruit and vegetables rapidly generates approximately 140 billion metric tons of agricultural waste. Environmental pollution associated with these wastes, like land pollution, and increased greenhouse gas emissions, can be reduced through the bioconversion of wastes (renewable biomass resources) into value-added products in biorefineries (Babu et al., 2022). These value-added products synthesized for utilization in industries such as biofuels, biomaterials, or biochemicals are effective, reuseable, and enhance sustainability. These bioproducts are recuperated into useful biomolecules and oils for the food industries and dyes for the textile industries. The sustainability of these products can be acquired efficiently through costeffective pretreatments and bioprocess optimization methods (Haldar et al., 2020). The initial stage of value product chain development is the process modelling and optimizing, which, due to its complex nature and large scale, faces challenges in raw material availability, cost competitiveness, upscaling, and lack of technological maturity (Gerassimidou et al., 2021). Optimization of production processes like fermentation and chemical synthesis for manufacturing value-added products has become a focal point in research enhancement of biorefineries. There has been a revolution in the technology used in process designing and manufacturing practices in biorefineries. Advanced Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based approaches like Genetic Algorithm (GA), Fuzzy Inference System (FIS), and Artificial Neural Network (ANN) are being utilized along with conventional tools to optimize variables interacting in production processes. These techniques increase overall efficiency and enhance prediction accuracy and output of value-added products (Banerjee et al., 2025). Optimization of the bio processes enables higher productivity in parallel with lower environmental burdens. AI-based approaches integrated with conventional approaches need a large amount of experimental historical data to be successfully carried out (Arias et al., 2023). Advancement of biorefineries due to the rapid demand of value-added products as well as a solution to the greenhouse emissions, the integrated application of AI for process analysis needs to be understood. This chapter is a contribution towards upscaling the current knowledge base related to different approaches for the enhancement of production for value-added products. The chapter discusses the conventional techniques for value-added production and various optimization models. There is further discussion of advancements in the traditional approach using AI-based approaches and their features and benefits in biorefinery. Apart from different AI-based models, AI integrated with life cycle analysis for sustainability is also briefed. Finally, the chapter addresses current limitations in the field and outlines potential future directions for research and development.

The Internet, as we know it today had a very humble beginning. Erosion is simply one of the aspects of the constant process of change. It is fundamental to the formation of alluvial soils and sedimentary rocks. Man’s activities seldom slow down or halt the process but frequently speed it up. We usually refer to geological erosion or normal erosion, or natural erosion when we mean that which results only from the forces of nature, and to accelerated erosion when the process is influenced by man.

When trying to predict the probable severity of man-made erosion it helps to consider the rate of geological erosion. If the conditions of climate and topography are such that geological erosion is quicker than usual, then these sameronditions will also lead to particularly severe accelerated erosion. Extreme examples of both kinds of erosion are shown in plates 2.1 and 2.2.

Introduction

After working for more than 10 years in set of private companies, Mr. A K Aggarwal joined a very large government organisation, ITN Ltd (ITNL) (refer to Exhibit 1). He, along with other two freshly recruited MBA graduates, was posted to a project location in the remote district of India after a brief stint at ITNL's corporate office. The top management posted them with a lot of expectation to implement one of the most critical projects of the company. In the first few weeks only, he observed a tussle between the field team and project manager Mr. Amaresh Sharma. This tussle was impeding the project progress. Being new in the organisation, Mr Aggarwal was hesitant to approach any body and was clueless about how to handle the situation. This was also a new situation for Mr. Sharma in his 20 years of ITNL career and he was facing difficulty in breaking this logjam.
