Saccharification: Process by which oligosaccharides and polysaccharides are degraded to produce smaller sugar units. It involves acid, alkali or enzymic (e.g. cellulases, amylases) hydrolysis of glucosidic bonds. Term is used frequently to describe hydrolysis of wastes, e.g. sugar cane bagasse or other lignocellulosic materials to produce substrates for microbial fermentation.
Saccharimeters: Devices used for measuring degree of rotation produced during transmission of polarized light through a sugar solution. When a standardized saccharimeter is used, this property is a function of the concentration of a sugar solution. In the sugar industry the rotation value (Pol) is used as a measure of sucrose content due to the low concentrations of other sugars.
Saccharin: It is a heterocyclic organic sulfur compound (o-benzosulfimide) that has approximately 300-600 times the sweetness of sucrose and is used in artificial sweeteners. It is available as the free acid and as sodium or calcium salts. Like sugar, saccharin salts are white crystalline solids that are highly soluble in water, but unlike sugar they are non-nutritive and impart a bitter metallic aftertaste.
Saccharometer: It is a graduated devices i.e.hydrometer which is directly calibrated with the percentage of sugar in the sugar/water solution. It is also used for determination of the density of sugar solutions, based on the level at which the device floats. It is also known as hydrometers.

This deals with the description, identification and naming of plants, and their classification into different groups according to their resemblances and differences, mainly in their morphological characteristics. So far as angiosperms or higher ‘flowering plants’ are concerned, it has been estimated that over 199,000 species are already known to us, and that thousands mor have yet to be discovered and recorded. The object of systematic botany or taxonomy is to describe, name and classify plants in such a manner that their relationship with regard to their descent from a common ancestry may be brought out. The ultimate object of classification is to arrange plants in such a way as to give us an idea of their phylogenetic relationships, i.e. the sequence of their origin and evolution from simpler, earlier and more primitive types to more complex, recent and advanced types during different periods. The earlier classification of plants were based on their economic uses, e.g. medicinal plants, cereals, fibre yielding plants, oil yielding plants, etc. or on gross structural resemblances, e.g. herbs, shrubs, trees, climbers, etc. These classifications were incomplete and fragmentary as plants that did not fit into such classifications or were of no economic value were usually ignored. Therefore, an ideal system of classification should not only indicate the actual genetic relationship but should also be reasonably convenient for practical purposes.

Cashew (Anacardium occidentale L.) is a native of Brazil and was introduced in India by the Portuguese during the16th Century. It is grown in India, Brazil, Vietnam, Tanzania, Mozambique,
Indonesia, Sri Lanka and other tropical Asian and African countries. The crop is grown within the latitudinal belt of 27°N and 28°S of the equator experiencing the tropical climates for its growth and development. It is categorised under one of the plantations along the West and East Coasts. To a limited extent cashew is cultivated in Gujarat, Chattisgarh, Manipur, Meghalaya, Tripura, Andaman and Nicobar Islands. The crop is mostly grown in low and midlands along the West and East Coasts of India in sandy and laterite soils. Since it is mostly grown along the Coast across the Country it is also known as the Coastal Tree. Cashew grows along the West and East Coasts of India from South to North, lying between 09°N and 23oN latitudes. Though it grows beyond 23°N latitude, its production is relatively low as the reproductive phase coincides with cold injury/low temperature during
winter (December-February). Being a tropical coastal tree, it cannot thrive under low winter temperature. There is significant yield variation in cashew among the different agroclimatic zones of the country. Year-to-year yield variation is also significant as the crop is weather sensitive. This crop may come up even in waste lands with specific crop management practices along the West Coast and as a shelter belt and wind break along the East Coast.

The Coconut palm, also known as the Cocos Nucifera L., is one of the most fascinating and beautiful palms in the world. The coconut is believed to have originated in southeast Asia (Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines) or Micronesia. Coconut has been cultivated in India since ages and plays an important role in social, economic and cultural activities of the people. The palm is amenable to both plantation and homestead management and it can be either a major crop or a minor one in a homestead garden of mixed crops. While responding favourably to scientific management, the palm also tolerates negligent farming to a certain extent. Thus, it can adapt to the divergent farming situations and management practices that are prevalent in different agro-climatic regions. The coconut palm is usually found near the sea on sandy beaches where it can tolerate salt spray and brackish soils. It is also grown under different soil types such as loamy, laterite, coastal sandy, alluvial, clayey and reclaimed soils of the marshy low lands. The ideal soil conditions for better growth and performance of the
palm are proper drainage, good water holding capacity, and presence of water table within three metres and absence of rock or any hard substratum within two meters of the surface. The coconut palm can also grow well inland, within altitudinal limit of 600 m to 1000 m in the Tropics. It requires an equatorial climate with high humidity. A year-round warm and humid climate favours thegrowth of coconut. The palm does not withstand prolonged spells of extreme weather/climate variations under rain fed conditions. A welldistributed rainfall of 1300–2300 mm per annum is preferred. It is known as a coastal tree since it is grown along the Coasts and Islands and does not tolerate high diurnal temperature range, that is the difference between the maximum and minimum temperatures.

Introduction
Ensuring environmental sustainability through wastewater treatment is a crucial part of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The global shortage of clean water and the potential for future water scarcity, particularly in developing countries, represent a major crisis for humanity in this century and beyond. The UN reports that 1.2 billion people currently lack access to clean drinking water, and half of the global population does not have sufficient water purification. By 2025, it is expected that 1.8 billion people will live in regions facing severe water shortages (WHO, 2018). Currently, onethird
of the world’s population lives in water-stressed countries, and this figure is expected to increase to two-thirds by 2025. By 2050, between 2 and 7 billion people may face water shortages. The worsening water situation is largely due to inadequate water supplies and rising demand in developing countries driven by rapid population growth and industrialization. Contaminated water and poor sanitation contribute to nearly 60% of global illnesses. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that about 2.4 billion people lack basic sanitation facilities, and over 1 billion lack access to safe drinking water. Unclean water can lead to diseases such as diarrhea, cholera, dysentery, guinea worm infections, typhoid, intestinal worms, and trachoma (WHO/UNICEF, 2010). The World Health Organization (WHO) reports that four billion people suffer from diarrhea each year, leading to nearly 1.8 million deaths, with 90% of these deaths occurring in children under five years old. The quality of available water is declining because of rising pollution from industrial, agricultural, and other human activities. This issue is becoming a significant environmental problem.

6.1 Introduction
Our journey through remote sensing has, thus far, focused on the remarkable capabilities of various platforms and sensors to observe Earth’s atmosphere and surface. From the localized, high-resolution insights provided by groundbased instruments like Wind Profilers and SODARs, to the expansive, global coverage offered by an array of satellite-borne imagers, sounders, radars, and lidars, we’ve seen how a continuous stream of invaluable meteorological data is acquired.
However, the mere act of collecting this data, no matter how sophisticated the technology or comprehensive the observations, represents only the initial phase of its lifecycle. The true power and utility of remote sensing data are unlocked only when it can be efficiently organized, securely preserved, and readily available to the diverse community of meteorologists, climate scientists, researchers, and operational forecasters who rely on it daily. This necessitates a profound understanding of the principles and practices governing data formats, data storage, and data access.
The sheer volume, velocity, and variety of remote sensing data pose significant challenges. Petabytes of information are generated annually, requiring robust infrastructure and standardized methodologies to ensure its integrity, interoperability, and long-term usability. Without effective strategies for managing this deluge of information, the potential of remote sensing to enhance weather prediction, advance climate science, and inform critical decision-making would remain largely untapped.

A good monsoon can bring prosperity, while a weak or erratic one can lead to hardship and even disaster.

1. Introduction
Soil is an extremely complex ecosystem and performs many functions, i. e, biomass production; food contingency, fuel and fibre; buffering and transforming actions; breakdown of organic matter; nutrients recycling; carbon sequestration; providing a biological habitat; source of raw materials; and regulation of water quality and supply (Weil and Brady, 2017; Telo da Gama, 2023). However, because of natural as well as anthropogenic reasons, there is a widespread degradation of soils. Soil degradation means deterioration in overall soil functioning which leads to slowdown of distribution of ecosystem services because of the impairment of soil health through anthropogenic perturbations. Therefore, farmers and researchers are very much concerned about soil health and crop productivity. Soil health status and its quality are often used interchangeably and have been defined by research community differently but recently the word soil health is acquiring popularity due to its flexibility in allowing diverse stakeholders, including policymakers to use the term in their own way. Recently, soil health is a topic of much discussion and research (Bünemann et al., 2018). Soil health is described as “the continued capacity of soil to function as a vital living ecosystem that sustains plants, animals, and humans” (USDA-NRCS, 2019). A broader, ecologically based approach is “the capacity of soil to function as a vital living system, within ecosystem and land-use boundaries, to sustain plant and animal productivity, maintain or enhance water and air quality, and promote plant and animal health” (Doran et al., 2000). Soil health refers to the actual capacity of a soil to function, contributing to ecosystem services. Many have defined it as “fitness for use” while the rest regard as “capacity of the soil to function”. Lehmann et al. (2020) stated that the concept of soil health “connects agricultural and soil science to policy, stakeholder needs and sustainable supply-chain management” and compared the soil health concept to soil fertility, soil quality and soil security. Furthermore, they came to a conclusion that soil health is narrower concept than soil security, but more comprehensive than soil quality and even broader than soil fertility, in relation to the current sustainable development goals (SDGs) as proposed by United Nations. From an overall perspective. Soil health comprises of refinement and unification of the chemical, physical, physico-chemical, biophysical, biochemical indicators of soil that supports productivity and environmental quality (Figure 1). Soil can be classified as healthy or unhealthy based on its ability to sustain plant and animal productivity while maintaining air and water quality.

Introduction
The 2022 edition of the United Nation’s global forest sector outlook for 2050 presented an update on the current patterns of wood consumption, its rising tendency, and projected future demand of primary processed wood to total 3.1 billion cubic meters of round wood equivalents (FAO, 2022). In addition, up to 199 million m³ would be required to substitute for non-renewable materials. Planted forests contributed around 46 percent to the global industrial round wood supply in 2020. However, globally the supply of wood from planted forests is always lower than the actual demand. Increasing population, urbanisation, economic development and consumption pattern are some of the major driving causes behind the demand in growth of wood and wood products. Wood security is defined as long-term availability of wood and wood products (sawn wood, veneer, plywood, particleboard, pulp, wood fuel and other primary wood products) for domestic and industrial requirements. The deficiency in the wood supply chain will continue to increase, and when the world population touches 9.4 to 10.2 billion, a 22 to 34% increase, the demand-supply imbalance will also increase. This supply gap would result in a shift in consumption patterns and lead to increase in environmentally harmful products such as petroleum-based plastics. Hence to meet the basic wood demand in 2050, at world level an additional 33 million ha of highly productive plantation forest would need to be established to meet the industrial round wood demand (FAO, 2022).
New demands for forest ecosystem continue to surge based on the Sustainable Development Goals, and mitigation of climate change related issues, water and other goods and services. Along with policy measures to directly act on existing forest resources conservation, increase in tree plantations with management interventions to increase productivity is necessary to fulfil the wood supply demands (McMaho and Jackson, 2019). Globally, the area under plantation forestry is on the rise (McEwan et al. 2020). Numerous studies (Silva et al. 2019; Carle et al. 2020; Pinnschmidt et al. 2023), highlight that plantation forests increasingly fulfil the ecological services provided by natural forests. Particularly, short rotation exotic trees with high productivity have found a niche in high-intensity industrial plantations, driving the expansion of the pulp and paper industry into a

Introduction 
In recent years, the global demand for sustainable and renewable energy sources has intensified due to the continuous depletion of fossil fuel reserves, rising fuel prices, and environmental concerns. Bioethanol, a renewable fuel derived from the fermentation of plant biomass, is considered a promising alternative to petroleum-based fuels. Among various feedstocks, tuber crops such as cassava, sweet potato, and potato have gained significant attention due to their high starch content and relatively low competition with food supply in certain regions. Bioethanol production is broadly categorized into four generations based on the type of feedstock and technology involved: First-Generation Bioethanol is derived from food crops such as maize, sugarcane, and tuber crops. Despite its wide application, it has been criticized for contributing to rising food prices (Khairati, 2024). Second-Generation Bioethanol is produced from non-food lignocellulosic biomass like agricultural residues, which reduces the food vs. fuel conflict (Sharma et al., 2020). Third- Generation Bioethanol is derived from algal biomass, offering higher yields and lower competition with land use (Brennan & Owende, 2010). Fourth-Generation Bioethanol combines biomass conversion with carbon capture and storage technologies, providing the highest environmental benefits (Yoon et al., 2012). Further the trend in world ethanol production during the year 20020–2025 is given in Figure 1. Tuber crops such as cassava, sweet potato, and potato are promising feedstocks due to their high starch content and lower food competition in certain regions. Recent studies highlight the efficiency of bioethanol production from these crops: Cassava is considered the most efficient tuber crop for bioethanol production due to its high starch yield and low production cost (Jagatee et al., 2015). Sweet Potato studies report ethanol yields of up to 138.6 g/kg under optimized fermentation conditions using co-fermentation techniques (Dash et al., 2017). Industrial potato waste has been successfully utilized for bioethanol production, with pilotscale experiments yielding up to 68.68% ethanol concentration (Sehsah et al., 2015). Bioethanol production from tuber crops presents several environmental and economic benefits. Life Cycle Assessment studies indicate that bioethanol reduces GHG emissions compared to gasoline, particularly in second-generation production systems (Farahani & Asoodar, 2017). 16.1 Introduction
This chapter presents the definition of plastic, its types and characteristics. For each type of plastic, its molecular structure, properties, advantages and disadvantages and applications are presented.
16.1.1 Origin of Plastic
Charles Goodyear discovered vulcanization, a process that increased rubber’s elasticity and resilience, in 1839, which resulted with the discovery of plastic. One of the earliest known polymer combinations was the creation of Charles Goodyear. Celluloid, or Parkesine was discovered in 1855 by Alexander Parkes. This substance is a blend of cellulose nitrate and camphor/lime. Additionally, it was the first thermoplastic to become rigid when cold and flexible when heated. In the years that followed, several noteworthy discoveries were made, such as the separation of PVC in 1835 by the French physicist Victor Regnault, the invention of the first synthetic polymer (or industrial plastic) in 1869 by John Wesley Hyatt, and the introduction of transparent food packaging in 1900 by Edward Brandenberger.
16.1.2 Plastic and its Constituents
Plastic is a class of materials that is utilised in electronics, construction, medical equipment, packaging, etc., because of its extreme versatility. This synthetic or semi-synthetic material can be moulded using a variety of methods. It is created from petrochemicals or natural materials like cellulose or starch. The basic components are chemically altered to create polymers, which are lengthy sequences of molecules. Then, these polymers can be moulded using blow, extrusion, or injection moulding techniques to create a variety of shapes. Another name for some plastics is resins. Based on their chemical makeup, plastics can be divided into two primary categories, viz. thermoplastic and thermoset/ thermosetting plastic. The thermoplastics can be moulded, melted, and remoulded repeatedly. Thermoset/ thermosetting plastic cannot be heated again. Polymers come in a variety of forms, both synthetic and natural. Among the materials most frequently used in the creation of plastic are coal, natural gas, cellulose, starch, crude oil, and salt. Plastics are mostly made by two processes that call for certain

Plants are biological systems highly sensitive to their surrounding environment, and meteorological factors dictate the rates of crucial physiological processes (Fig. 2.1).

Agricultural drought management is a critical aspect of ensuring food security and sustainable agricultural practices, particularly in regions prone to water scarcity. Droughts, characterized by prolonged periods of abnormally low rainfall, can have devastating effects on crop yields, livestock productivity, and the livelihoods of farmers. Effective drought management strategies are essential for mitigating these impacts and enhancing the resilience of agricultural systems. Agricultural drought occurs when the soil moisture is insufficient to meet the needs of crops, leading to reduced growth, lower yields, and increased plant stress. This type of drought can be particularly challenging because it directly affects food production and the agricultural economy. Unlike meteorological droughts, which are defined by the degree of dryness compared to normal conditions over a specific period, agricultural droughts focus on the impact of drought on crops and agricultural productivity.

Global agricultural sector moves toward sustainability and resource efficiency, bioinoculants represent a transformative innovation. Bioinoculants (microbial inoculants) are preparations containing beneficial microorganisms such as bacteria, actinomycetes, fungi, and cyanobacteria that, when applied to seeds, seedlings, or plants, and soil, enhance nutrient availability, promote plant growth, and improve soil fertility. In the context of modern agriculture’s ecological challenges, such as soil degradation, overuse of agrochemicals, and climate variability, microbial inoculants offer a sustainable, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly alternative. However, their effectiveness is often limited by environmental stresses, short shelf life, and inconsistent field performance. Nano-bioinoculants address these limitations through the integration of nanotechnology into microbial formulations. This innovative approach improves microbial viability under field conditions, increases interaction efficiency with plant roots, and enables controlled nutrient release, leading to improved crop performance. Plant growth, soil fertility, and stress resistance are strengthened by inoculation using nanoparticles, nano-based biofertilizers, and biopesticides. Their application is particularly relevant in India, where diverse agro-climatic zones and smallholder farming systems demand low-input, high-efficiency solutions. In recent years, there has also been a shift toward more sustainable materials, such as biodegradable and recyclable options, reflecting growing environmental concerns and regulatory pressures. This chapter explores the various types of packaging materials used in the food industry, examining their benefits, limitations, and applications. By understanding the unique properties of each material, we can better appreciate how they contribute to the protection, preservation, and presentation of food products.

Enzymes are remarkable biological macromolecules that catalyze chemical reactions with extraordinary efficiency, playing an essential role in sustaining life. These large protein molecules and certain catalytic RNA molecules known as ribozymes accelerate reactions by lowering activation energy, enabling them to occur at rates necessary for biological processes. Their specificity is just as impressive as their speed as enzymes are often highly regioselective and, in many cases, absolutely stereospecific, traits that synthetic chemists strive to replicate. They are vital in metabolism, DNA replication, signal transduction, and cellular respiration, operating under mild physiological conditions. Factors such as temperature, pH, substrate concentration, and the presence of inhibitors or activators influence their activity. Given their significance, enzymes have garnered attention in fields like drug design, disease treatment, and industrial applications. The modern study of enzymes continues to provide groundbreaking insights into chemistry and biology, advancing both scientific understanding and human welfare. Brief History of Enzymes The existence of enzymes was first inferred when specific biochemical reactions were observed to occur only after the addition of cell extracts, even though the enzymes themselves could not be directly identified like typical molecules. It begins with a history for gaining into posterity through current status.

A. Health, Hygiene and Nutrition of Rural Women
Imtiaz et al., 2014, conducted a descriptive cross- sectional study from March to June 2012 to evaluate the personal hygiene practices among rural women in a particular Bangladeshi community. In order to evaluate two fundamental aspects of personal hygiene, hand washing and access to clean drinking water, 150 women of varying ages were chosen from the villages of Garibpur and Tangurpur in Jessore district. A convenient non-probability sampling technique was used and data was gathered by face- to- face interview using semi-structured questionnaire. Among the respondents 87.33% had some form of schooling, 12.67% were illiterate. The majority of the participants almost 87.34% had washed their hands before eating, 13.74% before eating break fastand none of the respondents washed their hands before consuming any dry food. Themajority of the respondents almost 95.34% washed their hands after urinating; among them 82% used soaps, 16% used ash and 2% used earth. To lead a healthy- life it is crucial to practise good personal cleanliness and to utilise safe drinking water. They should be regularly inspired to do so through health education activities. Rao et al., 2012, carried out a study on Indian women’s diet and nutritional status. Women’s status in society has an impact on their health. Female infanticide, a higher death rate, a lower sex ratio, low literacy rates and a lower level of employment for women in the workforce are just a few examples of how the demographic consequences of women have manifested themselves. The degree of women’s nutritional status is influenced by the cultural norms, practices, and socio-economic consideration. Bureau of National Nutrition Monitoring has conducted periodical surveys on diet and nutritional status of various population groups since 1972.For the objective of this inquiry, information on the food and nutritional status of the tribal and rural population in nine Indian states was gathered in 1998-99 and 2005-06 respectively. Rural and tribal women consumed fewer calories overall than recommended, with the exception of various vegetables, roots and tuber. The study found that women who were pregnant or nursing had in sufficient nutritional intake, particularly a micronutrient shortage that is termed as hidden hunger. Nearly 4.9% of tribal women had a substantially greater prevalence of goitre. Tribal women suffer from under nourishment and have more prevalence of chronic energy in sufficiency than rural women.

So, it indicates that the distribution of the variables is fairly consistent. From the table, it is depicted that the mean family size (x3) of the respondents is 4.143. So,almostonanaverage,the family size is 4 for every respondent.The value of standard deviation is 1.477. The C.V. value for the variable is 35.657. An earthen dam is an embankment constructed primarily from compacted soil to impound runoff and create a reservoir. Such dams support irrigation, water supply, groundwater recharge, hydropower generation, and flood moderation. Their successful performance depends on suitable site conditions, proper materials, adequate compaction, controlled seepage, stable slopes, and safe disposal of surplus water. This chapter introduces the advantages and limitations of earthen dams, construction materials, types of embankment sections, and their principal components. Particular attention is given to cut-offs, impervious cores, casing or shells, foundations, filters, drainage systems, spillways, outlets, slope protection, and common causes of deterioration or structural failure.

Genetic Resources

Tomato, a warm season crop, sensitive to frost, is usually cultivated in sub-tropical and mild cold climates. The National Bureau of Plant Genetic Resources (NBPGR), New Delhi, is the main centre for maintenance of tomato germplasms in India. The Bureau has systematically assembled more than 2,900 germplasms. Some of the promising germplasms identified for different traits on the basis of their morphological variations (Fig.1; see Plate-1) are given in Table1.

The past hundred and fifty years of this millennium have witnessed an unbelievable pace of scientific and technological development. Modern science has attempted to a great extent and succeeded in realizing the dreams and fantasies of philosophers and scientists of the previous centuries. Plant genetic engineering via., nucleus is a mature technology that has been used productively for research and commercial applications. However, plants have an unassuming second genome inside the tiny organelles called as plastids. Although this small circular DNA carries a fewer genes than its nuclear counterpart, researchers say its potential for genetic engineering far outstrips its size. The ability to introduce foreign genes at specific locations on a chloroplast has been acquired very recently. It is expected that certain limitations of nuclear genome transformation methods in terms of protein expression and environmental safety can be overcome by site-specific introduction of genes into plastids. Thus the plastid engineering forms a viable alternative serving as another milestone in the field of plant biotechnology.

Modeling phytonematodes is helpful in the investigation of several host plant interactions and may yield useful information to be exploited in the integration of management strategies and biological control. Modeling the phytonematodes density changes in a soil/root microcosm may allow the identification of main factors active in such systems (Ciancio et?al?, 2022). The multiple tri-trophic interactions linking roots, phytonematodes and antagonists, however, originate a very complex system. It requires knowledge about the many parameters describing the nematode life stages, the interactions with the antagonistic organisms present in the microcosm, as well as their capabilities for effective and durable host regulation. Descriptive variables should also account for the effects of roots and of other environmental factors at work in the tri-trophic interaction system. Models may provide benefits, including the possibility of identifying the best moment for the inoculation of a biocontrol agent, the optimal amount of its inoculum applied to maximize its biocontrol efficacy, as well as the possibility to simulate and thus investigate its behavior once introduced in soil.

Statistical Inference

It is the process of drawing valid inference or conclusion about the population on the basis of a sample drawn from the population. In other words, Statistical inference is the process of using a sample to infer the properties of a population. It requires studies pertaining to three aspects:

• Point Estimation • Interval Estimation

• Testing of Hypothesis • Point Estimation: It is to find a single value, which is used as an estimator of unknown parameter. For example, sample mean may be used as an estimate of the population mean µ.

• Interval Estimation: It is to find confidence limits based on sample values, within which the unknown parameter lies with confidence coefficient described in probability term. In other words, we estimate an unknown parameter using an interval of values that is likely to contain the true value of that parameter and state how confident we are that this interval indeed captures the true value of the parameter.

• Testing of Hypothesis: The tests used to ascertain whether the differences between estimator and the parameter or between two estimators are real or due to chance are called tests of hypothesis or tests of significance. In other words, the procedures, which enable us to decide whether to accept or reject hypothesis, are called tests of hypothesis or tests of significance. Two types of problems mainly arise in tests of significance:

• Testing the significance of the difference between estimator and the pa rameter.

Symbolic systems provide logical reasoning and explicit knowledge representation, whereas sub-symbolic models offer learning, adaptation and pattern-recognition capabilities. This chapter explains how combining these approaches can create more accurate, adaptive and interpretable intelligent systems. It discusses rule-based systems, logic programming, ontologies, neural networks, fuzzy systems, evolutionary computation and swarm intelligence. Neural-symbolic, neuro-fuzzy, rule-augmented and ontology-aware architectures are examined, along with loose, tight and deep integration strategies. Applications in healthcare, cybersecurity, manufacturing and knowledge-based information systems demonstrate their practical potential. Challenges involving integration complexity, scalability, knowledge engineering, transparency and continuous updating are considered, together with future directions in human-centred hybrid intelligence.

A levee is an elongated embankment constructed along a river, stream, or floodplain boundary to prevent floodwater from entering protected land. Levees can safeguard settlements, agricultural fields, industries, roads, and public infrastructure, but they do not eliminate flooding and may transfer risk downstream or cause severe damage if overtopped or breached. Their design depends on expected flood level, freeboard, soil properties, seepage conditions, foundation stability, alignment, and available construction materials. This chapter explains levee functions, classifications, advantages, limitations, and structural components. It also addresses seepage control, slope protection, erosion, settlement, failure mechanisms, inspection, maintenance, and the importance of combining levees with forecasting and evacuation planning.

Diagnostic biomarkers are measurable biological molecules that provide information about physiological or pathological conditions. This chapter examines the use of metabolomics for discovering, evaluating, and validating biomarkers for disease diagnosis, prognosis, therapeutic monitoring, and personalized medicine. It discusses different types of biomarkers, metabolomic biomarkers, biological samples, analytical platforms, biomarker-discovery workflows, and statistical analysis. Applications in cancer, diabetes, cardiovascular, liver, kidney, neurological, infectious, and metabolic diseases are considered. Barley is an important cereal crop grown all over the world and is used mainly for feed and malt purposes and little for human food. Barley is the world’s oldest grain, as evidenced by discoveries in ancient cities in the Middle East and North Africa. It has been cultivated for about 8,000 years, and today is the world’s fourth largest cereal crop. Considerable evidence is available that points to the role of barley as sustaining food source in the evolution of humans. Additionally, alcoholic beverages of various types and fermented foods prepared from barley are commonly referred to in the ancient literature. As other food crops (wheat, rice, corn and rye) became more abundant, barley was relegated to the status of “poor man’s bread”. In the United states, barley used as food is 1.5%, as animal feed 65% and in malt and alcohol production 30% (Newman and Newman, 2006). In 1991, barley used as food in European countries was even lower (0.3%) than the United States. In contrast, during the same time period food was the largest for barley in Morocco (61%), China (62%), India (73%), and Ethiopia (79%). However, current consumer interest in nutrition and human health may help restore barley’s status in the human diet. Nutritional qualities of barley have been known since ancient times. For example, Ajgaonkar 1972 described how ancient Indian physicians effectively stabilized type II diabetics some 2400 years ago. Treatment was remarkable simple and not really different from recommendations that are given to diabetic patients today, i.e., lose weight, change diet, and increase exercise.

Rice is grown in more than 100 countries in the world and is an important crop for nutritional security of large part of the population. World rice production in 2007 was approximately 645 million tones. Around 50 countries have an annual production of more than 1 million tones. Ninety percent of the total rice is produced in Asian countries, with two countries, China and India, growing more than half the total crop. Top ten rice producing countries are China, India, Indonesia, Bangladesh, Vietnam, Thailand, Myanmar, Japan, Philippines, and Brazil. In Bangladesh, Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Myanmar, Thailand, and Vietnam, rice provides 50-80% of the total calories consumed. Major part of the rice is consumed locally where produced and only 6-7% of world rice production is traded internationally.

12.1 Introduction

Rainfall is the major source of water that contributes lion’s share for irrigation to crops. Before it reaches the earth, it is to a great extent pure in nature. By the time it falls on the ground surface, it comes in contact with various types of gases and suspended materials of the atmosphere and also after it flows as runoff on the surface it gets dissolved with many types of salts, impurities etc. that render the water to be impure. Many a time the industrial waste, agricultural wastes, pesticides, fungicides, chemical fertilizers etc. get mixed with water and make it unsuitable for irrigation use. Water being a universal solvent, it dissolves all most all organic impurities, salts etc. which makes it objectionable for both domestic and agricultural uses.

Irrigated agriculture is dependent on an adequate water supply of usable quality. In the past, water quality concerns were neglected because good quality water supplies were plentiful and readily available. This situation is now changing in many areas. Especially, in the arid and semi-arid zones, water quality is fast deteriorating which is posing threat to irrigated agriculture.

Conceptually, water quality refers to the characteristics of a water supply that will influence its suitability for a specific use. On the other hand, it refers to the situation of how well the quality meets the needs of the user. There are three quality indicators. They are physical, chemical and biological indicators. Even a personal preference such as taste is a simple evaluation of acceptability. For example, if two drinking waters of equally good quality are available, people may express a preference for one supply rather than the other; the better tasting water becomes the preferred supply. In irrigated agriculture, emphasis is placed on the chemical and physical indicators of the water and rarely the biological indicator is considered important.

One of the triumphs of modern agriculture is the increase achieved in the productiveness of land, measured by yield of crops per hectare or per acre. This has enabled the earth to support a much greater population than would have been possible in past centuries. The increased productivity of the land is a result of scientific and technological progress in plant breeding, in control of pests and weeds, in irrigation and in fertilizers to supplement natural reserves of plant foods. But this progress makes it more difficult to fulfill one specific requirement of many crops: pollination. Pollination of flowers is an essential step in the sexual reproduction of angiosperms. Most angiosperm species rely on insects or other animals, rather than wind, for transfer of pollen among individual plants. The pollinators in turn benefit by obtaining floral resources such as nectar or pollen. Pollination is not only mutually beneficial to the interacting plants and animals, but also serves humanity directly through the yield of many crops, and indirectly by contributing to the healthy functioning of unmanaged terrestrial ecosystems (Costanza et al.,1997; Nabhan and Buchmann, 1997; Klein et al., 2007; Abrol, 2007 and 2008).

Globally, India takes pride of being one of the world’s largest producers of horticultural and agricultural commodities. The rapid increase in the area under intensive cultivation of crops, introduction of high yielding varieties, lack of natural enemy load of the pests and changing climatic conditions is largely responsible for the severe pest depredations. Pest management in agriculture is a challenging task in the context of increasing agricultural productivity without upsetting the ecological balance and deteriorating the environment. Use of agrochemicals in agriculture though played a significant role to boost the agricultural production is posing enormous problems like environmental pollution, pest resistance, pest resurgence, toxicity hazards, secondary pest outbreaks, residues in feeds, foods, soil and water, destruction of biodiversity of useful natural enemies and some social economic and political problems. In response, there has been increased demand for alternative and selective pest control agents. Biopesticides are advantageous due to their target specificity, eco-safety, no development of resistance, reduced number of applications, yield and quality improvement, higher acceptability and value of produce for exports and suitability for rural areas.

Introduction

The method of obtaining the data for each and every unit belonging to the population or universe, which is the aggregate of all units of a given type under consideration, is known as complete enumeration survey or complete census. Examples of units are family, a period of time such as an hour, day, fishing village, fishing household, fishing establishment, fishing boat, fish landing centres etc. The type of unit to be considered would depend on the purpose of the view. The population may be finite or infinite. It is obvious that for any statistical investigation complete enumeration of the population is rather impracticable. For example, if we want to have an idea of the total catch of fish (monthly) in India, we will have to enumerate all the fishers who catch fish in the country, which is rather a very difficult task. If the population is infinite, complete enumeration is not possible. In addition, if the units are destroyed in the course of inspection, 100% inspection though possible, is not at all desirable. However, even if the population is finite or the inspection is not destructive, complete enumeration is not taken because it is time-consuming, expensive, and as well as it needs a large amount of resources in terms of trained personnel.

Cage harrow: A rolling harrow with horizontal shafts each fitted with star shaped tines joined by rods forming the lines of cylinder.

Estimates of heritability use statistical analyses to help to identify the causes of differences between individuals. Because heritability is concerned with variance, it is necessarily an account of the differences between individuals in a population. Heritability can be univariate–examining a single trait – or multivariate – examining the genetic and environmental associations between multiple traits at once. This allows a test of the genetic overlap between different phenotypes: for instance hair colour and eye colour. Environment and genetics may also interact, and heritability analyses can test for and examine these interactions (GxE models).

11.1 Introduction

Tropical Root and Tuber Crops serve as primary or secondary staple to meet the calorie needs of one fifth of world’s population. These crops have myriad and complex roles to play in the food security and reduction of hunger and elimination of poverty. The starch content, pharmaceutical and nutraceutical value endow these crops with an extra ordinary range of potential and uses. Root and tuber crops are also greater sources of industrial raw materials for biodiesel and starch derived materials.

Saccharides : A monosaccharide sugar or combination of sugars is called saccharides.

Saccharification : The process of breaking a complex carbohydrate (starch or cellulose) into its monosaccharide components is called saccharification.

Saccharimeter : A device (polarimeter) used for measuring the amount of sugar in a solution is called saccharimeter. It is also known as saccharometer. It is a hydrometer with a special scale.

India is the largest producer of vegetables in the world after China, contributes over 13% to world vegetable production and occupies first position in the production of cauliflower, second in onion and third in cabbage. Amongst vegetables, India is the largest producer of Ginger and Okra and ranks second in Potatoes production (10%), Onions, Cauliflowers, Brinjal, and Cabbages, etc. During 2012-13, India exported vegetables worth  1516.33 crores. The average productivity of vegetables in the country is 17.61 t/ha.

Prices of major spices such as chillies, jeera, turmeric and cardamom are being driven to the ground by higher production, poor export earnings and a lack of working capital with traders to hold the stocks. Last December, all these spices were at record highs. With the prices ruling high last year, the acreage of most of the spices has increased this year, indicating excess production. The chilli acreage has increased by 15% to 20% while the land under jeera crop is estimated to have gone up by over 26%. The turmeric production is heading for a historic high of 82 lakh bags (each bag of 70 kg) and cardamom is having a bumper harvest.

Arecanut palm (Areca catechu L.) is the source of common masticatory nut, popularly known as arecanut, betelnut, or supari. It is used extensively in India by all sections of people as masticatory, and is an essential requisite for several religious and social ceremonies.
