Having explored the dynamic realm of Numerical Weather Prediction, which focuses on forecasting the atmosphere’s state over days to weeks, we now shift our focus to a broader, longer-term perspective: Climate Data and Analysis. While weather describes the atmospheric conditions at a specific place and time, climate refers to the long-term average pattern of weather in a region, typically spanning decades or longer. Understanding and analyzing climate data is paramount for comprehending our planet’s past climate, identifying ongoing changes, and projecting future scenarios in a warming world. The study of climate is fundamentally data-driven. Unlike the instantaneous snapshots used in weather forecasting, climate analysis requires vast historical records, often extending back centuries or even millennia, to discern natural variability from human-induced changes. This data comes from a diverse array of sources, including instrumental records (thermometers, rain gauges, barometers), satellite observations, and proxy records (tree rings, ice cores, sediment layers) that provide indirect evidence of past climate conditions. The sheer volume and heterogeneous nature of this data present unique challenges and opportunities for analysis.
This chapter will delve into the essential aspects of climate data and the methodologies used to analyze it. We will begin by exploring the various types of climate data available, understanding their strengths, limitations, and how they are collected and curated. Crucially, we will examine how this data is used to characterize climate variability – the natural fluctuations within the climate system – and to detect climate trends, particularly those associated with global warming. We will introduce key climate indices that summarize large-scale atmospheric and oceanic patterns, providing simplified metrics for
understanding complex interactions.

An agricultural weeder is a tool designed to remove weeds from fields or gardens. It can be used manually or attached to machinery like tillers and power weeders. Weeding is necessary to eliminate unwanted plants that compete with crops, ensuring better growth and profitability. Effective weed management is crucial in crop production, as weeds can reduce yields by stealing nutrients and attracting harmful pests. In recent years, research has focused on non-chemical methods and environmentally friendly alternatives to herbicides for weed control. Mechanical weeding is often the most cost-effective solution. Tools like rotary weeders, mechanical hand weeders, and wetland weeders are generally effective, with wetland versions gaining popularity due to their ability to function in shallow water. These tools uproot weeds and bury them in the mud through their pull-and-push action, making them both safe and eco-friendly. Weeding should be done at least three times during a growing season, with early weeding being the most effective for completely eliminating young weeds.

Secondary tillage equipment is often used for weed management. Weeders help control weeds between planted crops or before sowing. Some weeding machines use mechanical methods to remove unwanted plants without the need for chemicals.

Platforms such as UMANG, eHospital, BHIMUPI, DigiLocker, eCourts, Tele-Law, and eWay Bills have simplified citizen interaction with the state, enhancing the ease of living and improving administrative efficiency. The Government eMarketplace (GeM) has transformed public procurement by making it more transparent, efficient, and accessible for small businesses and start-ups. The Jan Dhan–Aadhaar–Mobile (JAM) trinity has revolutionized welfare delivery by facilitating Direct Benefit Transfers (DBT) into verified bank accounts, eliminating intermediaries, and saving over ?1.7 lakh crore by 2020.

5.1 Introduction
Since the early days of human interaction with the environment, particularly in industrial settings, humans have continually been “shaped” to meet the demands of their surroundings. Historically, people have often endured significant discomfort and limitations without much complaint. In metaphorical terms, individuals have adapted by extending their reach to operate controls that were difficult to access, pushing their perceptual abilities to detect faint sounds or invisible signals, and compressing their bodies to fit into cramped workspaces. Cognitive abilities have also been stretched to accommodate monotonous or tedious tasks. However, as both work environments and machines have grown more complex, these challenges have become increasingly significant. A poor “fit” between the human operator and their environment has led to countless accidents, decreased productivity, and errors in many industries. The primary goal of ergonomics is to assess human capabilities and design the environment to align with these capabilities. Instead of attempting to adapt humans to jobs, ergonomics strives to “fit the job to the person.” This approach aims to optimize safety, efficiency, and comfort by aligning machine requirements with the operator’s abilities. By establishing a connection between humans and machines, ergonomics ensures that machines communicate information to the operator through their sensory systems, prompting a response that may alter the machine’s state. Key environmental factors such as temperature, humidity, lighting, sound, and visual conditions have a direct impact on both human well-being and the quality of production. The design of both the human workspace and the equipment used can be highly effective if the environment is conducive to the operator’s needs. Therefore, it is essential to study each environmental factor from an ergonomic perspective to ensure a comfortable and productive environment for workers. This includes designing jobs, equipment, and considering human anthropometric measurements in the design process.
5.2 Heat
Heat stress occurs as a result of the combined effects of environmental conditions, physical exertion, and clothing. The key environmental factors influencing heat stress include air temperature, humidity, radiant heat, and air movement, all of which can significantly affect work performance. Definition of Irrigation Method
Application of irrigation water to cropped field by different types of layouts is called as irrigation methods. The methods of irrigation initially might have been started to check the over flow of water from one field to another. But today, it has become necessary to save the water by proper methods to arrest run-off loss, percolation loss, evaporation loss etc., and to optimize the crop water need. Hence, irrigation method can be defined as the way in which the water is applied to the cropped field without much application and other losses, with an objective of applying water effectively to facilitate better environment for crop growth.
Factors Influencing Irrigation Methods
Soil type: The soil physical properties such as texture, structure, porosity, infiltration rate, etc. influence the selection of irrigation methods. Heavy texture soil restricts water movement than light texture soil wherein water move freely to deeper sections due to high porosity. Single grain structure soil allows water freely to move downward compared to other structures
Soil depth: If soil is shallow which holds less water, leveling and forming bunds etc. to hold? Maximum water is to increase the irrigation interval. Similarly if the soil is deep, it holds more water and needs longer irrigation interval. Accordingly, the irrigation methods can be selected.
Topography of land: In undulating topography, it is very difficult to adopt normal methods of irrigation. The slope of the land also decides the methods to be adopted. If the land is more sloppy, basin method cannot be used. In this condition strip method can be used. For undulating topography instead of strip or basin method, sprinkler or drip methods can be used.

This chapter introduces the fundamental concepts, tools, and applications of AI in agriculture. It explains how machine learning, deep learning, computer vision, predictive analytics, and intelligent systems can process large volumes of agricultural data. AI applications include crop monitoring, disease detection, yield prediction, precision input management, and automated decision-making. The chapter also discusses the major drivers of AI adoption, including increasing food demand, resource constraints, climate change, and labour shortages. Examples of AI-based agricultural applications demonstrate its potential to improve productivity, sustainability, resource efficiency, and resilience.

We all are familiar with the word “quality”. If we bring some fruits or vegetables from the market, the other family members will reflect on their quality by making observations such as: fresh or stale, good or bad quality or inferior product, etc. These observations are perceptions of consumers based on the sensory attributes of the fruit or vegetable colour, appearance, touch, smell or taste.

The quality characteristics of food that are acceptable to consumers are comprehended under the term “Food Quality. It includes external factors such as appearance (size, shape, colour, gloss, and consistency); internal factors (chemical, physical, microbiological) and characteristics/ specifications prescribed under the Government laws/standards. If consumer’s perceptions regarding quality of food are not positive he or she either will not purchase the material or will be paying less compared to when the consumer has positive perception about the quality.

The relationship between quality, profitability and market share has been well established. In the quest of quality, the dairy business is passing through revolutionary changes and the need for such changes has been very well realized. The leaders have initiated the process of setting vision and are working hard to provide the basic infrastructure with necessary resources. This has become a point of vital importance as the nation has now captured the first rank in milk production globally and is now ready and set to march ahead in the global race for dairy products market. Our country has great potential to export the dairy products such as cheese particularly Mozzarella, Feta, and indigenous products such as ghee, khoa, chhana, paneer, and array of sweets. Food items or dairy products to be traded in the international markets should be manufactured in accordance with global accepted norms and standards. In order to improve the quality of milk and milk products the Government of India is focusing on “Clean Milk Production”. As a dairy technologists and entrepreneurs, we must ensure production of quality products.

1. Country Background

India is one of the oldest civilisations in the world with rich cultural heritage. India has become self-sufficient in agricultural production, and is now the tenth industrialised country in the world. It covers an area of 32,87,263 sq km. Lying entirely in the northern hemisphere, the mainland extends between latitudes 8°4' and 37°6' north, longitudes 68°7' and 97°25' east, and measures about 3,214 km from north to south between the extreme latitudes and about 2,933 km from east to west between the extreme longitudes. 
Agriculture is the mainstay of the Indian economy, as it constitutes the backbone of the rural livelihood security system. It is the core of planned economic development in India, as the trickle-down effect of agriculture is significant in reducing poverty and regional inequality in the country. Growth in agriculture has a maximum cascading impact on other sectors, leading to the spread of benefits over the entire economy and the largest segment of population. 141 million hectares is the net sown area, while 190 million hectares is the gross cropped area. The net irrigated area is 57 million hectares with a cropping intensity of 134 per cent. Eighty-two per cent of farmers have small and marginal land holdings.

Multipurpose trees and shrubs are defined as all woody perennials that are purposefully grown to provide more than one significant contribution to the production and/or service functions of a land-use system that they occupy. In agroforestry systems, different species of trees and shrubs can be planted with many types of crops in a variety of patterns. Thus, it is required to know about the methods of propagation and nursery raising, planting and other silvicultural management practices along with the diverse uses of multipurpose trees and shrubs of tropical and subtropical areas before their selection for forestry and agroforestry activities. It is important to select the most suitable tree species since it is not easy to replace them once they have been planted.

Mangium (Acacia Mangium)

Acacia mangium is a single-stemmed evergreen tree that grows to 25-35 m in height and up to 60 cm in diameter. The bole is usually straight, often fluted near the base, free of branches for up to half its height. Mangium is native to Australia, Indonesia and Papua New Guinea. However, it tolerates varied site conditions and has adaptability to different planting objectives. Mangium shows most vigorous growth on well-drained, fertile soils in high rainfall areas in the humid tropics. It is valued for its rapid growth and has been planted throughout the humid tropics and is a major plantation species in the Asia Pacific. Provenances from Papua New Guinea consistently show better growth in height and diameter.

The transition from vegetative to floral meristems in higher plants is programmed by the coincidence of internal and environmental signals. The timing of floral transition has a direct impact on reproductive success. One of the most important environmental factors that affect the transition is the change in day length (photoperiod). Classical experiments imply that plants monitor photoperiods in the leaf and transmit that information coded within an elusive signal dubbed florigen to the apex to reprogram development. Recent advances in Arabidopsis research indicate that the core of the day-length measurement mechanism lies in the circadian regulation of CONSTANS (CO) expression and the subsequent photoperiodic induction of the expression of FLOWERING LOCUS T (FT) gene, which might encode a major component of florigen. The florigen paradigm was conceived in photoperiod-sensitive plants; nevertheless, it implies that although it is activated by different stimuli in different flowering systems but the signal is common to all plants. Flowering time, the major regulatory transition of plant sequential development, is modulated by multiple endogenous and environmental factors.

The term excludes fertilizers and antibiotics or other chemicals administered to animals to stimulate their growth or to modify their reproductive behaviour”. Pesticides are the largest group of poisonous substances that are widely broadcast today.

A number of insects infest seeds in storage. These insects infest seeds to fulfill their feed and shelter requirements, which result into qualitative as well as quantitative loss of seeds. Indian climate is very favourable for their multiplication and growth throughout the year. Storage pests move along with commercial products from one area to another and even to different countries in the world. Some adult insects are strong fliers and may spread from one to another place of storage or from source of infestation. Generally, all insects infesting seeds in storage belongs to insect order Coleoptera and Lepidoptera (Table 4.1). Some minor species belong to Pscoptera. These pests cause losses to man by destroying large quantities of grain, corn, legumes (beans, lentils and peas), milled cereal products, flour, bran, macaroni and other paste products, dried fruits, dried vegetables, cheese, nuts, candy and other food materials. They contaminate and thus eliminate for human consumption, far more food than they eat and either cause direct loss or transmit diseases to man and his domestic animals. Designing an earthen dam requires the coordinated evaluation of catchment runoff, reservoir capacity, site conditions, foundation properties, expected service life, and the consequences of failure. A selected return period is used to estimate extreme rainfall and runoff, while adequate spillway capacity and freeboard protect the embankment against overtopping. The dam must possess low permeability, stable upstream and downstream slopes, and sufficient resistance to seepage, settlement, erosion, and earthquake forces. This chapter presents design criteria, top width, dam height, side slopes, freeboard, seepage-control components, slope-protection measures, and stability considerations. It also explains procedures needed to create a safe, economical, and functional embankment.

Computational crop-disease detection uses machine learning, neural networks and image-processing techniques to provide timely and accurate diagnoses. This chapter presents a complete framework covering agricultural intelligence, disease categories, image acquisition, preprocessing, model training and classification. It examines datasets collected in fields or through drones and considers deployment through mobile devices, cloud platforms and other digital systems. Evaluation measures are introduced for assessing model accuracy and reliability. The chapter also considers limitations caused by insufficient or poor-quality data and variation in field conditions. Future directions include multimodal data integration and explainable models that provide transparent recommendations for sustainable crop protection and improved food security.

1.1. Introduction

A typical dairy farm consist of different classes of dairy animals like calf, heifer, breeding heifer, pregnant, milch and dry animals and bull. The systems of management for the different classes are not same. They need some routine as well as periodical farm practices, some of which are common for all categories of animals (i.e., identification, dehorning, grooming etc.), while some categories need special farm operations (e.g., castration in males, milking etc.). Also there is need of routine disinfection of animal sheds and farm premises to prevent and control occurrence of diseases and maintaining the animals healthy. Further for proper execution of all these operations there is need of keeping farm records.  Keeping in view the above points, this section deals with some important farm management practices.

INTRODUCTION

Radiation processing is a promising technology for improving hygiene and increasing storage and distribution life of food products. Ionizing radiation can be used to bring about beneficial changes in food stuffs (Urbain 1995) and it has been suggested as a method of ensuring safety of meat products (Patterson and Stevenson 1995). Ionizing radiation interacts with an irradiated material by transferring energy to electrons and ionizing molecules by creating positive and negativities (Moseley 1989).

Agriculture occupies a significant place in the economy of India. It contributes nearly 20% to the Gross Domestic Product [GDP] and provides employment to around two-thirds of nation’s population Agricultural commodity exports account for nearly 20 per cent of the total export earnings of the country. The agricultural produce sector has been one of the most important components of Indian economy. Considerable progress has since been achieved in scaling new heights in the production of foodgrains, commercial crops like cotton, sugarcane, tea etc., fruits, vegetables and milk. The increasing trend of agricultural production has brought, in its wake, new challenges in terms of finding market for the marketed surplus. There is also pressure from all segments of agricultural economy to respond to the challenges and opportunities that the global markets offer in the liberalized trade regime. In particular the market system has to be revitalized to a) provide incentives to farmer to produce more; b) convey the changing needs of the consumers to the producers to enable production r burning; c) foster true competition among the market players and d) to enhance the share of farmers in the ultimate price of his agricultural produce.

Spice is defined as “a strongly flavoured or aromatic substance of vegetable origin, obtained from tropical plants, commonly used as a condiment”. A spice is a dried seed, fruit, root, rhizome, bark or vegetative substance or flower bud used in nutritionally insignificant quantities as a food additive for the purpose of flavoring. Spices are distinguished from herbs, which are leafy, green plant parts used for flavoring purposes. American Spice Trade Association (ASTA) defines spices as “any dried plant product used primarily for seasoning purposes”. Abstract

Complex industrial wastewater by using conventional treatment method is a significant challenge for its safe disposal. Recently, two step treatments by aerobic bacteria using activated sludge process followed by rhizofiltration has been recommended as a promising technology for detoxification of complex industrial waste. In activated sludge process recalcitrant compounds are biotransformed along with biodegradation of organic waste. Aerobic treatment may be activated sludge process, trickling filter or aerobic lagoon process, which one is used for treatment  it is based upon the characteristics of wastewater. Carbon and nitrogen ratio along with other organic compound is also play important role for microbial growth and degradation of pollutants. During degradation of various pollutants, metal microbes interaction play significant role for its bioremediation either through adsorption or bioaccumulation.

In agricultural systems, water quality is usually determined to  assess its suitability for irrigation and/or its use for aquaculture. Analysis of irrigation water is carried out, to know their nutrient load, suitability for irrigation purposes in general and to salt sensitive crops in particular, and their significance as nutrient suppliers as in practical crop production (Tandon,1993). For aquaculture, on the other hand, maintenance of pond environment for survival and growth of aquatic lives, forms the major purpose of such exercises. While both the assessments are mostly governed by some common variables, a few additional attributes are also used for identifying the water quality for these two different purposes. The most important characteristics, that determine the quality of irrigation water are:

Phenol is normally a benzene ring containing an –OH group, and hence an aromatic alcohol. The term “phenolic” refers to similar aromatic compounds with one or more -OH groups. Phenolics constitute one of the most widespread classes of secondary metabolites. Commonly talked about class of compounds like anthocyanins, flavonoids, lignins, tannins, coumarins and chalcones are all phenolic substances. Phenolics are water insoluble substances. However, the water solubility increases with the increase in the number of -OH groups. Phenolics absorb electromagnetic radiation strongly. Many of the phenolics absorb in the visible part of the spectrum (Ex. anthocyanins) and are coloured. Phenolics are produced in plants by 1. Shikimate pathway through phenylalanine (C₆-C3) and 2. Acetate/malonate pathway.

Abstract

In its natural environment, a plant faces various types of stressors. In fact, stress in moderation is a welcome event in plants. Only when it is in excess, would it compromise the productivity of plants. Beyond a threshold, stress (biotic and abiotic) has a detrimental effect on plant growth causing extensive yield losses in crop plants worldwide. Plants being sessile, have evolved a complex set of mechanisms to perceive the changes in the environment. Plants respond to minimize the potential damage due to stress while simultaneously preserving resources vital for their growth and development. The chapter presents an overview of various types of biotic and abiotic factors that act as plant stressors and the mechanisms by which plants respond to these stresses. The chapter concludes with a perspective on how the plant’s innate stress response machinery can be exploited for achieving higher tolerance to stress in crop plants.

Duff and  Daly (2002) briefly describes the commonly found orchid diseases. These include the Bacterial soft rot caused by Erwinia carotovora, black leg or slow decline caused by Fusarium spp., petal blight caused by Curvularia eragrostidis [PseudocochlioBolus eragrostidis] and Alternaria alternata, top rot/shoot rot caused by Phytophthora parasitica, and stem rot caused by Sclerotium rolfsii [Athelia rolfsii].

Sustainable development (SD) is a pattern of resource use that aims to meet human needs while preserving the environment so that these needs can be met not only in the present, but also for generations to come (sometimes taught as ELF-Environment, Local people, Future). The term was first  coined by the Brundtland Commission and defined sustainable development as “development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs” (UN, 1987; Smith and Rees, 1998)

Biosurfactants (BS) are amphiphilic compounds produced by microorganisms mainly bacteria and are known to contain hydrophobic and hydrophilic moieties that play a major role in reducing surface tension (ST) and interfacial tensions between individual molecules. Chemically, BS is a complex molecules consisting of lipopeptides, glycolipids, polysaccharide protein complex, fatty acids and phospholipids. They are known for their biodegradability, low toxicity, and renewable nature.

The Coconut palm, also known as the Cocos Nucifera L., is one of the most fascinating and beautiful palms in the world. Epigraphical, literary and sculptural evidence provide proof that coconut has served humanity for more than three millennia. The palm is looked upon with reverence and affection and is referred to by such eulogistic epithets as “Kalpavriksha”, tree of heaven, the tree of abundance, nature’s super market, king of palms and the tree of life. The coconut is believed to have originated in Southeast Asia (Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines) or Micronesia (Harries, 1977; Purseglove, 1968 and 1972). Coconut has been cultivated in India since ages and plays an important role in social, economic and cultural activities of the people. The palm is amenable to both plantation and homestead management and it can be either a major crop or a minor one in a homestead garden of mixed crops. While responding favourably to scientific management, the palm also tolerates negligent farming to a certain extent. Thus, it can adapt to the divergent farming situations and management practices that are prevalent in different agro-climatic regions. The coconut palm is usually found near the sea on sandy beaches where it can tolerate salt spray and brackish soils. It is also grown under different soil types such as loamy, laterite, coastal sandy, alluvial, clayey and reclaimed soils of the marshy low lands. The ideal soil conditions for better growth and performance of the palm are proper drainage, good water-holding capacity, and presence of water table within three metres and absence of rock or any hard substratum within two meters of the surface. The coconut palm can also grow well inland, within altitudinal limit of 600 m to 1752 m in the Tropics. It requires an equatorial climate with high humidity. A year-round warm and humid climate favours the growth of coconut. The ideal mean annual temperature, which can be tolerated by coconut palm, is around 27ºC with 5–7ºC diurnal variation. The palm does not withstand prolonged spells of extreme weather/climate variations under rainfed conditions. A well-distributed rainfall of 1300–2300 mm per annum is preferred. It is known as a coastal tree since it is grown along the Coasts and Islands and does not tolerate high temperature range, that is the difference between the maximum and minimum temperatures.

The potential yield levels in major crops have reached almost to a plateau. The current world population of 7 billion is likely to reach 9 billion by 2050 putting huge pressure to produce more from the available arable lands as acreage of major crops is predicted not to increase any further. The deficit of food requirements will have to be met partly by bridging the gap between farm yield (the average yield of the crop in a particular region/country/world) and the potential yield (the yield obtained usually in the breeders’ plots grown across the region of interest with the best yielding new varieties and without biotic stresses as diseases and pests, and abiotic stresses such as drought, flooding, salinity, heat and cold and partly by increasing potential yield per se.

The vision 2020 document of the Department of Agriculture and Co-operation envisages that “the tools of ICT will provide networking of Agriculture Sector not only in the country but also globally and the Centre and State Government Departments will have reservoir of databases” and also “bring farmers, researchers, scientists and administrators together by establishing ”Agriculture Online” through exchange of ideas and information”. To get realize the vision 2020 a large number of agriculture based websites and web portals have been established in India which is working for wellbeing of farming community. Majority of agricultural websites and web portals are providing need based technological information to the farmers as well as extension professionals. To revitalize our extension system these web based services can be used as ICT tool by extension personnel and farmers also. Therefore, to get access services from these websites and web portals or to replicate these ideologies in other part of country, elementary knowledge of working process and services available on these websites & web portals is essential. This chapter will provide a brief description about major ICT based projects dedicated to Indian farmers.

Carbohydrates are synthesized from CO₂ and H₂O in chlorophyll containing plants during photosynthesis. The term carbohydrate was originally coined for this class of compounds as most of them were hydrates of carbon or could be represented by the general formula C_n(H₂O)n. Not all the carbohydrates however, have this empirical formula, for example deoxyribose (C₅H₁₀O₄) and glucosamine (C₆H₁₃O₅N). Further lactic acid (C₃H₆O₃) formaldehyde (HCHO or CH₂O) and acetic acid (CH₃­.COOH or C₂H₄O₂) with this general formula is not a carbohydrate. Carbohydrates are defined as the compounds having either an aldehyde or a ketone group or a modified aldehyde or ketone group and other carbon atoms with alcoholic (-OH) group. Hence the continued usage of the term carbohydrate is for convenience rather than exactness.

Contamination of environment with heavy metals has become a serious global problem due to its threat to animal and human health. Removal of this non-biodegradable, hazardous heavy metals through bio-materials has received paramount interest and intense attention in the last few decades as bio-materials play crucial role in remediating heavy metal polluted environment through a process called “biosorption”. The term biosorption, therefore, has become a popular theme in recent years due to its relatively simple, inexpensive, eco-friendly with rapid mechanism of removing heavy metals from polluted environment. There have been burgeoning studies around the globe for alleviating the problem of heavy metal pollution by selecting and developing an effective bio-sorbent with minimum treatment process for field application. This review aims to provide vast information on types of biosorbent available, their exploitation for better efficiency and their economic attractiveness for the restoration of heavy metal polluted environment.

Now a days, the public has become more sensitive towards the protection of the environment and general awareness has increased about the adverse effects of industrial effluents contaminate with various pollutants, including dyes on the environment. Dyes are an important class of synthetic organic compounds used in many industries, especially textiles. Consequently, they have become common industrial environmental pollutants during their synthesis and later during fiber dyeing. Textile industries are facing a challenge in the field of quality and productivity due to the globalization of the world market. The dyes, which are widely used in textile industries when left in water bodies without any treatment cause environmental pollution and in turn are toxic, carcinogenic and mutagenic. The efficient treatment of the sludge from the industries is not economical and a challenging task. Currently, a number of different technologies and methods such as biological, physical and chemical are widely used for the removal of dyes. The treatment technologies for the removal of textile dyes from the textile wastewater found that over the past two decades interestingly focused on biodegradation methods such as microbial decolourization, enzymatic decolourization, adsorption by microbial biomass (living or dead) and bioremediation systems as a better alternative as the available physico-chemical methods.

Abstract

Photosynthetic blooms of toxin producing marine algae are often referred to as “red tides”. Proliferations of freshwater toxin-producing cyanobacteria are simply called “cyanobacterial blooms” or “toxic algal blooms.” Biotoxins of cyanobacteria are water-soluble and heat stable and they are released upon aging or lysis of the cells. The primary types of cyanobacterial biotoxins involves three types of toxins: hepatotoxins (microcystin; cylindrospermopsin and nodularin), which are taken up by the liver and cause weakness and anorexia (loss of appetite); neurotoxins (usually anatoxin and saxitoxin), which effect the nervous system and dermatotoxins (aplysiatoxin and lyngbyatoxin, LPS), which cause skin and mucous irritations upon contact. Unlike freshwater toxic algal blooms, marine algal toxins become a problem primarily because they may concentrate in shellfish and fish that are subsequently eaten by humans, causing syndromes known as paralytic shellfish poisoning/PSP (paralysis due to saxitoxin and gonyaulatoxins), diarrhetic shellfish poisoning/DSP (diarrhea due to okadaic acid) , amnesic shellfish poisoning /ASP(memory disturbances due to domoic acid), neurotoxic shellfish poisoning/NSP (paresthesia due to brevetoxin; also bronchial spasms). Coral reef fishes are the vectors of another algal poisoning, the ciguatera fish poisoning/CFP (paresthesia, warm-cold sense inversion etc., due to ciguatoxins and maitotoxin).

Citrus is the world’s leading tree fruit crop, comprising of mandarins, sweet oranges, grape fruit, limes and lemons. It is one of the most important fruit crops grown under varying agroclimatic conditions in India except in the high hilly temperature regions. Mandarin orange (Citrus reticulata) is the most important commercial citrus in India followed by sweet oranges and acid limes. Citrus fruits are not only delicious and refreshing but also they provide vitamins, minerals and other substances. Different species of Citrus have different chemical composition. In sweet oranges, principal constituents of edible portions are sugars (glucose + sucrose) and acids (primarily citric acid and a little of malic acid), the fruits of acid groups contain primarily acids in fruit juice. Rind of citrus fruits is rich in pectin and contains essential oils and glucosides (hesperidin, naringin). Citrus fruits are a good source of vitamin C (ascorbic acid - 25 to 85 mg/100 ml juice), besides vitamin B, A and D. World-wide demand of orange is as fresh fruits, but orange marmalade is an important product and is one of the main uses of sour and sweet oranges. Grape fruit and mandarins are also taken as fresh fruits. Citrus fruit can be utilized in a number of other ways as salads, juices, squashes, cocktails, syrup, concentrates and pickles. Peel of thick-rinded fruits can also be made to delicious candy. Lemon is used in many culinary purposes. Grape fruit is utilized in preparation of wines and brandies and also for flavour and in perfumery.

1.1 Introduction

Agriculture and allied sector contributes nearly 18 percent of gross domestic product in Indian economy and more than 70 percent population is dependent on agriculture and allied sector. In this sector, livestock is an integral part and it provides essential commodities and livelihood to the majority of its population. Livestock sector provides sustainability and stability to the national economy by contributing farm energy and food security. During last decade, the annual growth rate for livestock population maintained and in contrast the crop production remained stagnant or increased marginally. Between 1983 and 1999, the per capita consumption of milk increased by 37 percent and meat, egg and fish by 24 percent.

Introduction

It is an established fact that water in terms of direct deficit (drought) as well as water surfeits (flooding and water logging) and poor irrigation water quality (salinity)- are major constraints on the use of solar energy for food, feed and fiber production in almost all the agricultural regions of the world. The various biophysical, physiological, genetic, agronomic and ecological aspects of plant water relations have been thoroughly reviewed in recent years with the objective aimed at water availability as a constraint on crop production. This review will attempt a limited synthesis of these aspects, drawing mainly from research on drought resistance in grain crops, rice in particular, and emphasizing the progress- theoretical and practical- that could result from collaboration between physiologists, geneticists and plant breeders. A central theme will be research and development aimed at fitting crop plants to fluctuating drought prone environments. It is noteworthy that shortage of water restricts crop productivity all over the world-not just in those areas classified as arid or semiarid, but in any area in which the evaporative demand exceeds rainfall during the growing season. As such, the interaction between genotype and environment in situations has an important bearing affecting the physiology and also biochemistry at cellular level vis-à-vis the crop phenology. Cultivars with better ability to access soil water and improved water use efficiency could increase yields in an economic and environmentally sustainable way.
