Crop Water Requirements

In designing an irrigation system, the primary objective is to know the water requirement of crops. Water requirement of crops are determined either by f ield cultivation or by estimation through commonly used empirical formulae such as Blaney Criddle, radiation, Penman or pan evaporation method.

Definitions

Crop water requirement or evapotranspiration (ETcrop ): It may be defined as the rate of evapotranspiration of a disease free crop growing in a field of not less than one hectare under adequate fertility and water supply so that full productive potential can be achieved in prevailing environment. Evapotranspiration requirement of a crop refers the ETcrop and expressed in mm/day.

Reference crop evapotranspiration (ET0 ): It is the rate of evapotranspiration from an extended surface of 8 to 15cm tall green grass of uniform height, actively growing, completely shading the ground and not short of water. ET0 may be computed by using the empirical formulae and meteorological data for the specific period.

Introduction

A biopolymer is defined as a polymeric substance obtained from any living organism (plant or animal) [1]. These polymers are organic compounds where simpler molecules are covalently bonded with each other [2]. Although biopolymers are strictly synthesized naturally by living cells but some of them are also synthesized from non-biomaterial as well. Natural biopolymers are of different types based on their chemical nature like carbohydrate based, protein based or lipid based. Biopolymers can be broken down by the action of naturally-occurring organisms which leaves organic non-harming by-products like water and carbon dioxide in the environment[3].

Bio polymers are gaining importance in the field of food packaging, medical application, commodity packaging etc. because of their have specific physical, chemical, biological, biomechanical and degradation properties. Wide ranges of natural or synthetic biopolymers capable of undergoing degradation hydrolytically or enzymatically are being investigated for many applications[1]. Bio polymers are mainly based on two properties: a) Biological origin b) Biodegradability.

Earlier natural biopolymers such as cellulose, protein, starch have been used extensively for food applications. Recently, synthetic biopolymers such as polylactic acid (PLA), polycaprolactone (PCL), polyglycolic acid (PGA), polyvinyl alcohol (PVOH), and polybutylene succinate (PBS) are gaining more attention[4] for various applications. Natural biopolymers are more stereospecific and mostly hydrophilic having complex 3D structures as compared to the synthetic polymers[2]. Among the synthetic biopolymers some are microbiologically degradable in the environment whereas some are recyclable[1].

It is vital to categorise agroforestry and its many systems in accordance with certain contemporary standards in order to have a thorough grasp of them and to enable future progress. Since each agroforestry system refers to a different set of agroforestry practices involving agriculture (crops), forestry (trees), and pasture (animals), the various uses of land are combined either temporally or spatially. Each agroforestry system has its own unique arrangement of various components, such as crops, animals, perennial trees, etc., and degree of interaction between the components. In terms of structure, composition, age intensity, technology, inputs, etc., one system varies from the other.

Creating a useful framework for the synthesis and analysis of data on current systems as well as the creation of new, promising ones should be the primary goal of classification. For this reason, every categorization system needs to have the accompanying the following standards.

All agroforestry systems are characterized by three basic sets of attributes; productivity, sustainability, and adoptability (Nair, 2008).

Productivity: The majority of agroforestry systems, if not all of them, strive to maintain or raise both land productivity and output (of desired commodities). In several aspects, agroforestry may raise production. These include higher yields of related crops, less input use in the cropping system, enhanced labour efficiency, and higher production of tree products.

Sustainability: Agroforestry can achieve and indefinitely maintain conservation and fertility goals by conserving the production potential of the resource base, mainly through the beneficial effects of woody perennials on soils.

Adoptability: Improved or new agroforestry technologies that are introduced into new areas should fit the social as well as environmental characteristics of the land use system for which it is designed and should also confirm to local farming system.

Multipurpose trees and shrubs are defined as all woody perennials that are purposefully grown to provide more than one significant contribution to the production and/or service functions of a land-use system that they occupy. In agroforestry systems, different species of trees and shrubs can be planted with many types of crops in a variety of patterns. Thus, it is required to know about the methods of propagation and nursery raising, planting and other silvicultural management practices along with the diverse uses of multipurpose trees and shrubs of tropical and subtropical areas before their selection for forestry and agroforestry activities. It is important to select the most suitable tree species since it is not easy to replace them once they have been planted.

MANGIUM (Acacia mangium)

Acacia mangium is a single-stemmed evergreen tree that grows to 25-35 m in height and up to 60 cm in diameter. The bole is usually straight, often fluted near the base, free of branches for up to half its height. Mangium is native to Australia, Indonesia and Papua New Guinea. However, it tolerates varied site conditions and has adaptability to different planting objectives. Mangium shows most vigorous growth on well-drained, fertile soils in high rainfall areas in the humid tropics. It is valued for its rapid growth and has been planted throughout the humid tropics and is a major plantation species in the Asia Pacific. Provenances from Papua New Guinea consistently show better growth in height and diameter.

Soil colloidal substances are composed of very fine particles (< 0.002 mm diameter) that undergoes two phase system in a heterogenous manner, where, one phase (disperse phase) is disperse in a fine state of subdivision in another medium called dispersion medium. The soil colloidal properties are affected by the physico-chemical and biological parameters of soils. The availability of plant nutrients are governed mostly by the surface charge characteristics of clay colloids.

5.0 Soil Colloids

Soil colloids being one of the active constituents determine the physical and chemical properties of the soil with the diameter ranging from 1 μm to 2 μm. The origin of the particles may be organic and inorganic constituents.

Programming techniques are used the mathematical tools by the scientists, economists, and planners to specify the optimum combination of resources and enterprises in farms and firms, to identify the profit maximizing mixes of commodities to be produced, to specify the cost minimizing methods of production and transportation of goods, to identify the least cost locations from which raw materials can be purchased, to determine the locations of production at which a particular commodity should be produced and the consumption centres to which it should be shipped, and to specify the least cost ingredients of a feed or ration which must meet the specified nutritional requirements. Programming techniques can be either linear or non-linear. Although several non-linear programming techniques (like quadratic, integer, separable, dynamic programming, etc., which are very complex to work with) are available, we will largely deal with linear programming technique and to a certain extent will brief the theory of dynamic programming.

14.1. Multiple Regression

Concept: Multiple regression is the most commonly utilized multivariate technique. It examines the relationship between a single metric dependent variable and two or more metric independent variables. Multiple regressions are often used as a forecasting tool. Goal is to use the linear composite of two or more continuous and/or categorical variables (predictors) to: 1) predict scores on a single continuous variable (criterion), or to 2) explain the nature of the single continuous criterion variable from what is known about the predictor variables. In prediction, the criterion is the main emphasis because decisions are made on its value, but often times, it is difficult to directly measure or obtain a subject’s actual score on the criterion; therefore, it is important to estimate or predict one’s criterion score based on the value of the predictor scores.

Project management involves the use of knowledge, skills, tools, and techniques to design activities to fulfill project requirements. In other words, project management encompasses the skills, tools and management processes needed to successfully implement a project.

Project Management comprises

• Skill. Expert knowledge, skills and experience are necessary to reduce the risk level of a project and thereby enhance the likelihood of its success.

• A set of tools. Project managers use a variety of tools to improve their chances of success. Examples include document templates, records, planning software, modeling software, inspection checklists and inspection forms.

Introduction

Vitamins are the organic derived accessory food factors apart from carbohydrate, lipid and proteins meant for specific biological functions, optimum growth and health of an organism. These factors are are required in minute amount in the diet for proper functioning of biological enzymes. The term accessory factors were given by Hopkins to the essential nutrients present in the natural foods. Funk (1913) coined the term vitamine to the active principal present in rice polishings. Vitamins are classified into two categories like fat soluble A and water-soluble b Vitamins A, D, E, K are fat soluble whereas Vitamins B and C are water soluble. The B group of vitamins include vitamin B1, B2, B6, biotin folic acid, B12 etcall the fat-soluble vitamins are isoprenoid in nature consisting of repeating isoprenoid units. And meant for diversified functions. The water-soluble vitamins are heterogenous group of compounds generally not stored in the body and readily excreted in urine. Vitamin A, include retinoid group of compounds like retinol, retinal and retinoic acid Retinol is a primary alcohol containing β-ionone ring with isoprenoid units, double bonds and hydroxyl group. Naturally it exists as ester of long chain fatty acids. Retinal is the aldehyde form whereas Retinoic acid is the acid form. Carotene is provitamin A normally found in plant origin foods that in the intestine gives rise to two moles of retinal by enzyme carotene 15-15-dioxygenase. Diet contains retinol esters and p-carotene. Retinol esters are hydrolyzed into fatty acids and retinol that absorbed into intestinal mucosal cells. p-carotene Is absorbed and converted into retinal by p-carotene dioxygenase. Retinal then converted into retinol. In the intestinal mucosal cells, retinol re-esterifies with fatty acid to form retinol ester.

Introduction
India has a well-established fisheries and aquaculture industry that significantly impacts Gross Domestic Product (GDP), foreign exchange, and nutrition. The fisheries sector plays a crucial role in India’s economy, contributing approximately 1.07% to the national GDP and 6.72% to agricultural GDP in 2021-22 (Economic Survey, 2022). India is second-largest producer of fish in the world (after China), with an annual production of around 16.24 million metric tonnes (MMT) in 2022–23, comprising 12.2 MMT from Inland fisheries and 4.04 MMT from marine fisheries. The fisheries sector has experienced remarkable growth over the decades. Fish production surged from 0.75 MMT in 1950-51 to 12.59 MMT in 2018-19, marking a seventeen-fold increase. This growth has been accompanied by a rise in the sector’s contribution to agricultural GDP, which impressively increased from 0.84% in 1950 to 5.7% in 2017. India is one of the largest seafood exporters, with exports reaching INR 63,969 crores ($8.09 billion) in 2022-23 (Marine Products Export Development Authority - MPEDA). Frozen shrimp is the leading export commodity, followed by frozen fish and cephalopods. The USA, China, the EU, and Southeast Asian nations are key export markets. This robust performance underscores the sector’s role in bolstering India’s foreign exchange reserves. The sector supports direct employment to over 28 million people, mainly in coastal and rural communities (National Fisheries Development Board, 2023) and indirect employment, including processing, transportation, and allied workers.
Fish is an important source of protein, essential fatty acids, vitamins and minerals. The harvest, handling, processing and distribution of fish
provide livelihood for millions of people and also provide valuable foreign exchange earnings. In both the industrialized and developing countries, fish is an important and cheaper source of animal protein to local communities (Adewolu and Adeoti, 2010). Fish is also used as source of other nutrients such as micro nutrients, minerals, and essential fatty acids mainly in the Low Income Food Deficit Countries. However, the disadvantage with the fish is that it is highly perishable though it is an inexpensive protein source. Due to these characteristics, the fish suffers 50-60% higher post harvest losses compared to agricultural commodities.

Aquaculture is rapidly outpacing all other sectors in agricultural development. The study of fish genetics gained traction in the 20th century, driven by advancements in the understanding of Inheritance and reproduction. During the 1960s, selective breeding programmes aimed at enhancing genetic qualities became more common (Gjedrem and Baranski, 2009). Currently, more than 60 fish and shellfish species are going through selective breeding (Gjedrem and Baranski, 2009). Despite this, many critical traits like resistance to disease, efficiency of feed conversion, fatty acid composition and quality of meat are challenging to assess in breeding prospects but significantly impact the yield and profitability of several aquaculture species. Genetic mapping refers to the process of creating a genetic map (Van Ooijen and Jansen, 2013). Making genetic linkage maps is still essential for carrying out genetic and genomic research and many aquaculture species have had such maps developed. Developments in genotyping and sequencing technologies have made it the creation of higher-density, high-resolution (HR) genetic linkage maps. However, there are now important tasks in linkage analysis due to the usage of a large number of molecular markers. High-density linkage maps are valuable tools for studying genomic biology and evolutionary genetics because they serve as the foundation for QTL (quantitative trait loci) mapping. They facilitate the quantification of recombination rates, linkage disequilibrium levels, and chromosomal rearrangements across chromosomes, between sexes, and among different populations. The development of marker-Assisted Selection (MAS) has gained significant consideration and has significantly accelerated genetic breeding efforts in numerous cultured aquatic organism (Li, 2019; Yu, 2019). Quantitative trait loci (QTL) linked to economically important variables are frequently mapped using genetic linkage maps, which are an invaluable tool for examining genomic regions. (Huang, 2020; Wan 2017; Zhou, 2021). Growth rate, flesh quality, and disease resistance are only a few of the important features that are regulated by several genes or loci. The use of genetic maps in QTL (quantitative trait loci) mapping is essential for determining the locations of genes linked to these traits. (Huang, 2020; Li, 2019; Wan, 2017; Wang, 2018). The mapping of trait-related quantitative trait loci has been greatly improved by recent developments in high-throughput next generation sequencing techniques (You, 2020). Research in this field has greatly advanced through the use of a variety of techniques, including restriction site-associated DNA sequencing (RAD-seq), genotyping-by-sequencing, specific-locus amplified fragment sequencing, and genome-wide association studies (GWAS). Of these, RAD-seq is thought to be an appropriate, robust, and economical approach that has demonstrated 172 Aquaculture Genetics: Breeding, Conservation, and Sustainable Production efficacy in detecting genotypes and single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) (Andrews, 2016). Linkage mapping in aquaculture is a valuable tool that has revolutionized selective breeding. By revealing the genetic foundations of key traits, it allows for more efficient and sustainable aquaculture practices. The integration of linkage mapping with other genomic technologies is expected to enhance productivity, improve disease management, and ensure the long term sustainable growth of aquaculture industries worldwide.

These sensors record electromagnetic radiation, providing valuable insights into various aspects of the Earth’s environment. Remote sensing technology has emerged as an invaluable tool for achieving these objectives, offering a range of benefits for sustainable agriculture (Jensen, 2009). With the advent of modern technologies such as hyperspectral remote sensing (HRS) that collects information in narrow contiguous bands, many new avenues of applications have come up. This detailed spectral information enables the precise identification and classification of objects based on their unique spectral signatures. Further, the narrow spectral reflectance provides significant information regarding the biophysical, biochemical, and physiological parameters of crops. These characteristics of HRS provides opportunities for improved feature identification, anomaly detection, and quantification. Often HRS data also complement to the remote sensing data, such as LiDAR or SAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar), allowing for a more comprehensive understanding of the Earth’s surface and its features. All these features of HRS enables precision agriculture, allowing the management practices as per the specific needs of the fields. By assessing soil and crop conditions remotely, one can apply resources like water, fertilizers, and pesticides precisely where and when they are needed. This minimizes waste and reduces the environmental impact of agricultural operations. Hyperspectral remote sensing can also assess critical soil parameters such as moisture content, pH levels, and nutrient concentrations. Monitoring these factors over time helps farmers make informed decisions about soil management and the choice of suitable crops. It also aids in preventing soil degradation and erosion. Early detection of stressors like pests, diseases, and nutrient deficiencies is crucial for maintaining crop health and maximizing yields. Remote sensing provides a timely and accurate means of monitoring crop conditions across large areas, enabling rapid responses to threats and reducing yield losses. Currently, about 350,000 species of flowering plants have been described under global flora, but only a few of them have been rigorously screened for plant breeding parameters and systematic research accomplished in terms of varietal development. According to the Great Medical Encyclopaedia, medicinal plants are those used as a source of raw material for preparation of medicinal products of natural origin. Medicinal and aromatic plants occupy a pivotal position in the socio cultural, health care and spiritual arena of rural people of India. Medicinal plants contribute significantly to the rural livelihoods for their sustenance and income generation. Medicinal and aromatic plants are being used since ancient time for the treatment of many diseases in traditional and recognized systems of healthcare and for therapeutic, fragrance and flavoring products in pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries besides as sources of natural dye, fat, essential oil, biopesticide, resin, protein, vitamin, condiment, spice, timber, fiber and other useful substances. Medicinal and aromatic plants-based livelihood systems are often mediated by the market forces and/ related directly to employment and income of the poor people.
Based on the research work carried out by International Development Research Centre (IDRC) in South Asia, MAP and other biodiversity-based livelihoods can not only become poverty alleviating but also been made socially equitable and gender balanced. According to the World Health Organization, 80% of people from developing countries depend mainly on traditional medicine for primary health care. India is one of the worlds’ richest sources of medicinal plants comprising of nearly 45,000 species, of which nearly 100 species find major commercial use as per the statistics of National Medicinal Plant Board, New Delhi. In 2017, the estimated global market value of herbal medicine and herbal supplements was in the region of $107 billion (Yao et al, 2019), and not surprisingly, the substantial demand and consumption of these products have resulted in shortages, and in some cases even the exhaustion, of several medicinal plant resources, leading to habitat destruction and the loss of genetic diversity.
Plant secondary metabolites specific to each medicinal herb are derived from the precursors obtained from the primary metabolic processes related to one plant species or related group of species. These metabolites protect plants against plants being eaten by herbivores or being infected by microbial pathogens. They serve as attractants for pollinators and as agents of plant-plant competition and plant microbe symbioses. The rise of chemical taxa of medicinal and aromatic plants can be considered as consequence of biochemical and metabolic processes mostly under genetic control. It is assumed that differentiation of cell is mostly manifested in chemo-differentiation at a molecular level and the fundamental differences of protein present in an organism, between different enzyme systems. Moreover, the identity of a medicinal plant is attributed to the dissimilarities in their metabolic profiling intra specific chemical adaptations influenced by the ecological and geographical conditions. The genetic blueprint contained in the nucleotide sequence can determine the phenotype of an individual. The hereditary units, which are transmitted from one generation to the next generation are called genes. A gene is a fundamental biological unit like atom which is the fundamental physical unit.
Mendel was the first scientist who proposed genes as particulate units and called them hereditary elements or factors. But the concept of gene has undergone a considerable change since Mendel’s time.
Modern Concept of Gene
A gene can be described as a polynucleotide chain, which is a segment of DNA. It is a functional unit controlling a particular trait such as eye colour. Beadle and Tatum concluded by various experiments that gene is a segment of DNA that codes for one enzyme. They proposed one gene-one enzyme hypothesis. But as some genes code for proteins that are not enzymes, the definition of gene was changed to one gene-one protein hypothesis.
Protein Hypothesis
The concept of gene has undergone further changes as the new facts came to light. Since proteins are polypeptide chains of amino acids translated by mRNA, gene was defined as one gene-one polypeptide relationship.
Some proteins have two or more different kinds of polypeptide chains, each with a different amino acid sequence. They are products of different genes. For example, hemoglobin has two kinds of chains a andß chains, which differ in amino acid sequence and length. They are encoded by different genes. Thus, gene is defined as one gene- one polypeptide relationship.

The vulnerability of agriculture and livelihoods in the Member Countries of the Centre on Integrated Rural Development for Asia and the Pacific (CIRDAP) poses a significant threat to achieving climate- resilient rural development. Industrial activities, in particular, are a major source of highlyhazardous chemicals such as dyes, pigments, and aromatic compounds,which pose a serious threat to the environment. In India, the textile industry, amajor force driving the country’s economic growth, also ranks asthsecondlargestpolluter. The printing, finishing, and dyeing processes used in textileproduction generate significant waste (Dubey et al., 2018). Dyes, a majorsource of pollution in this industry, are syntheticand complex in structure. Thiscomplexity makes them poorly soluble in water, hindering biodegradation andposing a long-term environmental concern. The global textile industry utilizesa wide range of dyes, with estimates indicating over 100,000 commerciallyavailable options. The worldwide production of these dyes is estimated to be700,000 tons per year (Al-Tohamy et al., 2020). However, dye contaminationis a major challenge in this industry. Studies indicate that during synthesisand dyeing processes, a significant portion, ranging from 10% to 15% of thetotal dyestuffs used ends up released into global water bodies (Leal et al.,2020). Etiology • Physical causes such as exposure to high environmental temperature, severe and prolonged physical activity especially in hot humid condition or    animals    confined    with    poor    ventilation. • Spontaneous hemorrhage in hypothalamus can cause neurogenic hyperthermia. • Severe dehydration affects the heat loss by evaporation and thus can lead to hyperthermia. • Too much muscular activity.

Intelligent healthcare is advancing through the integration of multimodal data, trustworthy AI, federated learning, digital twins, IoT devices and real-time decision-support systems. This chapter reviews the evolution of healthcare-data analysis and examines emerging methods for intelligent diagnosis and predictive care. It discusses explainability, privacy-preserving analytics, interoperability, data governance and ethical frameworks necessary for responsible implementation. Wearable technologies and connected sensors support continuous monitoring, while human–AI collaboration improves clinical decision-making. Case studies illustrate practical healthcare applications and implementation strategies. The chapter also considers global-health requirements, particularly in developing countries, and identifies future opportunities for scalable, equitable, secure and clinically effective intelligent healthcare systems.

Curriculum development and lesson planning are complex educational processes requiring alignment among learning objectives, competencies, instructional activities, assessment strategies, learner characteristics, and changing societal requirements. Generative AI offers new opportunities to support educators and curriculum designers in managing these processes more efficiently and intelligently. This chapter examines AI-augmented approaches to curriculum development and lesson planning, with emphasis on personalization, competency-based education, adaptive learning, and data-informed instructional design. Generative AI can assist in developing learning objectives, lesson sequences, teaching activities, question banks, assessment rubrics, case studies, and differentiated learning resources. It can also analyze student performance and recommend modifications to curriculum content, learning pathways, and instructional strategies. The chapter considers applications within Indian educational contexts, including curriculum alignment, digital platforms, low-bandwidth environments, and emerging institutional initiatives. It also discusses challenges such as teacher resistance, inadequate AI literacy, interoperability, infrastructure limitations, data privacy, and ethical concerns. Successful implementation requires human review and pedagogical judgment. The chapter ultimately presents AI as a curriculum co-design and teacher-augmentation tool capable of improving efficiency, personalization, scalability, and educational relevance.

Summary

Climate change (floods, droughts, rise of temperature and sea level) can directly impact the incidence of water related diseases through effects on water temperature and precipitation frequency and intensity. This chapter focuses on some common water quality related diseases that may enhance due to climate change such as arsenicosis, cholera, cyanobacterial toxins, dengue, diarrhoea and malaria. Arsenicosis is the disease caused by arsenic (As) contamination. As poisoning via groundwater has become a worldwide problem with 21 countries experiencing As groundwater contamination including Bangladesh, India, and China. In Bangladesh, out of 64 districts, As levels in 60 districts have exceeded WHO recommended guidelines of 10 µg/L and in 51 districts it exceeded Bangladesh recommended guidelines of above 50 µg/L. Chronic exposure to As has been linked to carcinogenic effects in both humans and animals. These include cancer of the various skins and internal organs (lung, bladder, liver and kidney) and reproductive and developmental effects; cardiovascular disease; reduced intellectual function in children and mortality. Alternate floods and droughts (due to climate change) have been found associated with the release of As and contamination of groundwater in Bangladesh, therefore may increase the risks of the disease due to rise of extreme events such as floods and droughts. Cholera is a diarrhoeal disease caused by the bacterium Vibrio cholerae. In 2012, WHO reported 245, 3931 cases of cholera in 48 countries, with more than 3,034 deaths with a case-fatality rate (CFR) of 1.2%. The highest cases were from Africa, followed by Latin America and Asia. The epidemic of cholera is reported to be linked strongly with climate change. Changes in temperature, salinity, rainfall and abundance of phytoplankton have been shown to cause an impact on distribution and survival of V. cholerae. In Bangladesh, cholera (cholera-toxin producing strain of V. cholerae) outbreaks are related to plankton blooms and rise of sea temperature.

The importance of fruits and vegetables in human nutrition is well known. Vegetables are a rich and comparatively cheaper source of minerals and vitamins. Besides, their consumption in sufficient quantities provides taste and palatability, increases appetite and provides a fair amount of fibers. These are currently reckoned as an important adjunct for the maintenance of good health and beneficial in protecting against some degenerative diseases, thus, they form a vital part of human diet. Besides, vegetables now a day are being considered as an asset for providing a good source of income to the growers.

Vegetables originated in different parts of the world, some came from tropical or subtropical countries and others from temperate zones, some from humid areas and others from climates that are more arid. Most of the countries in the world are gifted with varied agro-climatic environments for growing an array of vegetable crops to combat the present imbalanced diet of a vast population of the world, particularly in the developing countries. Production of vegetables in developed countries is much higher, for instance in Japan, nearly 40% of the diet of the people is vegetables. To meet out the full dietary needs of the common man, to eliminate malnutrition, deficiency of minerals and vitamins and also to relieve the stress for increased production of cereals, there is a greater need for growing vegetables on larger scale. As such, for increased production of nearly 247 known vegetable crops, a sound knowledge of the various aspects of vegetable production technology, environmental stresses and constraints, techniques of raising, pre- and post-harvest technology, marketing and seed production techniques is of utmost importance. Breeding and selection of new cultivars have allowed for a greater adaptability to less favourable growing conditions than was possible in the past but the inherent agroclimatic requirements of a specific kind of vegetable have not changed materially. Time or season of planting of a particular vegetable crop is determined by its environmental requirement. Knowledge of specific agroclimatic conditions required for a particular crop could enable the grower to select the best season of planting in any particular area (Singh et al., 1991).

In addition to pathogenic diseases, numerous abiotic disorders may also arise during growth, development and post-harvest storage of solanaceous vegetables. The physiological disorders of vegetables that have been included in this chapter are directly or indirectly associated with genetic, cultural, nutritional, physiological and environmental factors, and in most of the cases, the definite cause of disorder is not well understood due to the association of numerous factors together. These disorders may be related to colour, shape and form/condition of the produce. The genesis of physiological maladies was earlier poorly understand due to complexity in their characteristic symptoms but at present is relatively more transparent. The characteristic symptoms of abiotic disorders discussed below have not been attributed solely to a single agent or to a single cultural or environmental factor. The environmental factors correlated with the incidence of these disorders include high light intensities and low or high temperature of that growing area. For many abiotic disorders, very limited research work has been done, and the causes are poorly understood both in terms of why cultivars differ in susceptibility and why certain environmental factors predispose the plants or parts of the plant to the disorder. The growers feel concerned with the incidence of abiotic disorders as these cause huge economic loss. Therefore, the control of these abiotic disorders is essential for profitable production of solanaceous vegetable crops. In this chapter, emphasis has been given on practical aspects of diagnosis and potential control measures.

India is contributing about 10% of the world’s vegetables, and in terms of production, the country stands second after China. The existing area under vegetable cultivation in India is around 6.89 million hectare with a production of about 96.54 million tonnes. There will be a demand of 151-193 million tonnes of vegetables in India by 2030 (Dhaliwal et al., 2006). There are extensive crop losses in vegetable crops due to increased insect infestations. Since vegetables are grown round the year, there is carry over of insect-pests across the seasons and also from sowing until harvesting. Vegetables also invite more pest problems because of their cultivation under high fertility conditions leading to high plant succulence. High yielding varieties and hybrids are further more prone to the attack of insect-pests. Insect infestation affects the quality and market value of vegetables adversely and it is estimated that 30-40% of the total production is lost due to the attack of pests (Lal et al., 2004). A large number of pesticides are being used repeatedly to manage the insect-pests in India. Indiscriminate use of pesticides has led to many problems like toxic residues in edible parts of the vegetables, adverse effects on non-target organisms and beneficial insects, resurgence of secondary pests and development of resistance in major pests to pesticides and also environmental pollution. Therefore, latest approach has been to minimize the use of highly toxic insecticides by integrating different strategies of pest control like use of biological control agents, pesticides of plant origin, insect resistant varieties and other cultural practices. In this chapter, efforts have been made to highlight the distribution, host range, identifying characters, biology and nature of damage of important insect-pests of vegetables and also the methods of their management crop or pest wise.

Climate change and resource scarcity require farming systems that anticipate risks and make proactive decisions. This chapter explains how predictive modelling, artificial intelligence and IoT technologies can strengthen climate-smart agriculture. Statistical techniques, Convolutional Neural Networks, Long Short-Term Memory networks and Transformer models are examined for forecasting weather, crop performance and resource requirements. These tools can improve irrigation and fertilizer management, raise productivity and reduce environmental impact. Adoption remains constrained by poor-quality data, infrastructure deficiencies, cost, limited interpretability and unequal access to digital technology. Farmer-centred design, federated learning, gradual deployment and scalable systems are recommended for developing fair, practical and climate-resilient agricultural solutions.

Textile and apparel defects are commonly classified according to their severity, effect on product performance and influence on visual appearance. Accurate classification supports inspection decisions, corrective action and cost management. Critical defects create safety hazards, breach legal or compliance requirements, or make a garment unusable; affected products must be rejected immediately. Major defects significantly reduce appearance, durability or functionality and ordinarily require correction before sale, although they may not endanger the wearer. Minor defects are small departures from specifications that do not substantially affect usability but may lower perceived quality. Consistent classification enables inspectors to apply AQL criteria objectively and communicate appropriate acceptance, rejection or rework decisions.

Bio Control Agents explains how natural enemies can suppress agricultural pests and diseases through predators, parasitoids, and pathogens. It traces the historical development of biological control from traditional practices to major scientific successes and institutional development in India. The chapter describes introduction, augmentation, and conservation strategies, followed by detailed accounts of predators, parasitoids, and pathogenic microorganisms. Important bioagents, their characteristics, mechanisms, field applications, and mass-production methods are discussed, including Trichogramma, Chrysoperla, Cryptolaemus, Beauveria, Metarhizium, Trichoderma, Bacillus, and viral agents. The chapter provides a practical foundation for integrating biological control into environmentally responsible crop protection programs. across diverse farming environments and practical field implementation practically.

Climate Change: Understanding our Earth and Atmosphere

Our Mother Earth is the fifth largest planet in the solar system and the third from the sun. It is also the sole planet whose name comes from old English language only, and not from names of any other celestial bodies, whose names originated mostly from Greek/Roman mythology. Earth has a diameter of 6378 km, of which the earth crust (uppermost skin) is only 24 km. Earth is the only planet where water exists as liquid and 71% of its surface is covered by water. The earth’s atmosphere is made up mostly of nitrogen (77%) and oxygen (21%) gases. CO₂ consists of a very small (trace) fraction (0.03%) of atmosphere, but is most vital for the life cycle. When earth was created, it has got much higher CO₂ than today, and all of them have been sequestered in rocks as carbonates and dissolved in oceans and a negligible amount is distributed in plant communities. This extremely small quantity of CO₂ is keeping life on earth, by maintaining earth’s temperature at a comfortable 14°C (without CO₂, earth’s temperature would have been -21°C). This effect is called the ‘greenhouse effect’, revolving which all issues of climate change exist. It is also to be noted that water vapour is also an important greenhouse gas (GHG). It is to also to be noted that in spite of substantial increase in solar constant, earth’s average temperature has remained stable for billions of years. It is understood that this was possible through variation in CO₂, and it is the biological processes (Earth biosphere) that controlled the environment over years (Gaia hypothesis).

Pomegranate is one of the oldest known edible fruits and is associated with ancient civilizations of the Middle East. From its origin in the area now occupied by Iran and Afghanistan, the pomegranate spread east to India and China and west to Mediterranean countries (Turkey, Egypt, Tunisia, Morocco, and Spain). Spanish missionaries brought the pomegranate to the Americas in the 1500s (Hodgson, 1917; LaRue, 1980). The primary commercial pomegranate growing regions of the world are the Near East, India and surrounding countries, and southern Europe. The fruit is consumed fresh or processed into juice, syrup, jams, or wine (Fig. 1) (LaRue, 1980; Adsule and Patil, 1995; Kumar, 1990; Patil and Karale, 2001; Roy and Wasker, 1997).

15.1 Introduction

In recent years, the role of plant secondary metabolites as protective constituents in the human diet has been a growing area of research. Unlike the traditional vitamins, they are not essential for short-term wellbeing, but there is increasing evidence that modest long-term intakes can have favourable impacts on the human health. Teas, coffee and cocoa represent plantation cash crops grown in many of the warmer, less developed regions of the world. They serve as stimulant beverages and their demand is ever increasing day by daily. However, production of these beverages is under the severe threat due to attack from various pests and diseases which cause considerable damage.

The oil palm (Elaeis guineensis Jacq.) is recognised as the cheapest edible oil-yielding crop and has become one of the major oil crops in the world. The most productive oil-bearing crop, oil palm yields about three times the oil yield of coconut, seven times that of rapeseed, and ten times that of soybean. In terms of world production, palm oil maintains second place after soybean as a source of vegetable oil and has overtaken other crops such as rapeseed, sunflower, groundnut, and cottonseed. Under good agricultural management, a hectare of oil palm yields 5 to 7 tonnes of oil / year (Henson, 1991). The crop is unique in producing 2 distinct types of oil- palm oil and palm kernel oil- used for culinary and industrial purposes. Being rich in b-carotene, palm oil contributes substantially to nutritional and energy requirements of masses.

“Biological control is the reduction of the amount of inoculum or disease producing activity of a pathogen  or parasite  in its active or dormant state, by one or more organisms, accomplished naturally or through manipulation of the environment, host or antagonist or by mass introduction of one or more antagonists ” (Baker & Cook 1974). The biological world is a vast interacting network of living organisms in a state of dynamic equilibrium, reflecting changes in their physical environment and their relations to each other. Organisms exhibit many type of interactions in the process of achieving biological balance.  An organism may exert no effect on another or it may stimulate or inhibit the growth or development of the associate, it may stimulate or inhibit the formation of resting spores of the associate or it may enforce dormancy or cause lysis of the associate (Cooke & Baker, 1983).

The word protein was first coined in 1838 to emphasize the importance of this class of molecules. The word is derived from the Greek word proteios which means “of the first - rank”. Proteins are polymers/macro molecules made up of several amino acids. When there are more than 50 amino acids in a chain, the polypeptide is normally called a protein. Each protein in the cells of living beings has a unique sequence of amino acids that determines its biological function. The proteins are folded into specific defined structures, which are maintained by large number of relatively weak bonds. The three dimensional structure is well defined and suited to it’s specific function.

Crop improvement

Crop improvement refers to the genetic alteration of plants to satisfy human needs. It deals with the improvement of crops and production of new crop varieties, which are far superior to existing types in all characters. In pre-history, our ancestors in various parts of the world brought into cultivation a few hundred species from the hundreds of thousands available. In the process they transformed elements of these species into crops though genetic alterations that involved conscious and unconscious selection, the differential reproduction of variants. Through a long history of trial and error, a relatively few plant species have become the mainstay of agriculture and thus the world’s food supply. This process of domestication involved the identification of certain useful wild species combined with a process of selection that brought about changes in appearance, quality, and productivity.

Horticulture, which includes fruits and vegetables, plantation crops, spices, flowers, and medicinal and aromatic plants, has proved beyond doubt its potentiality for gainful diversification. One of the significant developments is that, horticulture has moved from rural confine to commercial production. Recently horticulture has emerged as one of the best option of diversification for effective land use planning and to achieve inclusive growth. The achievement in the development of horticulture through crop improvement is laudable, as the sector now contributes more than 30 percent to GDP of agriculture and has maintained the growth rate of more than 5 percent during the last two decades.

The family Solanaceae consists of 85 genera, which include both tuberiferous and non-tuberiferous ones.  Brinjal (Solanum sp.), chilli (Capsicum sp.) and tomato (Lycopersicon sp.) are the major fruit vegetables under the family.  In all genera, fruit is an indehiscent berry.

Transgenic plants are those plants, in which a foreign gene(s) has/have been introduced and stably integrated into the genome. The inserted gene sequence is known as Transgene. Almost three decades ago, in early 1983, the first cloning of the recombinant genes in tobacco signified the beginning of plant molecular biology in its own right. Since then the number of genes transferred and studied in plants has increased exponentially and the first transgenic crop (‘FlavrSavr’ tomato) was commercialized on May 18, 1994. However, the impact of transgenic crops was perceptible only after 1995 when transgenic maize, soybean and cotton were released for cultivation in USA.

Coconut is the most important palm of the wet tropics as a  major source of vegetable oil which also provides food, health drink, medicine, shelter, fuel, timber and fibre.  Because of its versatile nature, it is eulogised as ’Tree of Heaven’, ‘Tree of Life’, Kalpavriksha, Tree of Abundance, Natures supermarket and king of palms.  Oil is extracted from dried endosperm  which is called ‘copra’. The unopened flowering spathe, on tapping process, yields a delicious sap (Coconut Inflorescence Sap) rich in sugars and vitamin B, is called toddy from which sugar syrup and many products can be extracted.  An intoxicating drink called arrack can be prepared by distilling fermented toddy. The hard endocarps of fruits supply fuel and charcoal and mesocarp yields fibre for coir industry. Leaves are used for thatching houses.  Young unopened leaves are used to decorate festive places.

Pulses occupy an important place in hill agriculture. They are complementary to cereals in production and consumption being an important source of protein and nitrogen fixing ability which helps in improving soil health. Thus, cultivation of pulses has a positive relationship with our environment, human health and food security. Pulses produced in the hills are famous for their cooking quality, taste and flavour.
 
Himachal Pradesh has emerged as a model hill state in which agriculture is a dominant economic activity and major source of employment and income to the rural people. Being a hilly state, agriculture is practiced on about 10% of the geographical area. Out of which nearly 80% is rainfed. During the last three decades, the farming scenario has changed significantly. The area under fruits, vegetables and cereals has increased tremendously at the cost of pulses and oilseeds. There is, therefore, an urgent need to reverse this trend as pulse cultivation will not only increase soil health but save precious foreign exchange.

Year to year fluctuation in productivity of different pulses was also observed. The highest productivity i.e. 1067 kg/ha was observed during the year 2006-07 & the lowest productivity i.e. 497 kg/ha was recorded during the year 2008-09. The trend of area under pulse crop during the last ten years has also shown a wide fluctuation. Year to year and crop to crop variations are most pronounced.  The crop wise major pulse growing districts in Rajasthan are as follows.

2.1 Rice

Rice is the staple food for the largest number of people on the Earth. According to an estimate, the global rice production must reach 800 million tonne from the present 91.04 million tonne in 2005-06 to meet the demand in 2025. It’s area is 37% of the total area under food grains as against 20% under wheat, another important food crop. But globally it stands next to wheat in harvested area.As the irrigated rice contributes more than 75 per cent of the total rice production, enhancing its yield potential would be key to meeting the global rice requirement for an additional 215 million tonne. To achieve the target yield, rice varieties with a yield advantage of about 20 per cent over popular and widely adapted rice varieties under tropical conditions must be developed. Experience in China, India, Vietnam, the Philippines, Bangladesh and several other countries clearly indicates that hybrid rice technology offers readily available option to meet this challenge.

7.1. INTRODUCTION

Abiotic stress is a major limiting factor in crop productivity. Several stresses, such as high temperature, high light intensity, osmotic stress, heavy metals, and several herbicides and toxin lead to over production of reactive oxygen species (ROS), causing extensive cellular damage and inhibition of photosynthesis (Allen, 1997). ROS is produced in both unstressed and stressed cells. Plants have well developed mechanisms against ROS, involving both limiting the formation of ROS as well as instituting its removal. Under unstressed conditions, the formation and removal of O₂ are balance. Introduction of molecular oxygen (O₂) into atmosphere by O₂- evolving photosynthetic organisms, ROS has been the unwelcome companion of anaerobic metabolism. In contrast to O₂, these partially reduced or activated derivatives of oxygen (O₂¹, O2-, H₂O₂, and HO) are highly reactive and toxic and can lead to the oxidative destruction in tissues during stress.
