2.1 Introduction

Life exists in almost all diverse habitats, ranging from high mountain peaks of more than 20,000 feet to deep sea bottoms of up to 10,000m. Living organisms can be found in ponds, pools, ditches, sulphur springs, hot springs, the cold of the Polar Regions, the scorching heat of deserts, dense tropical forests, and anywhere else life is possible.

However, not all organisms occupy all possible life-supporting areas.

Statistics has originated as a science of statehood and found applications slowly and steadily in Agriculture, Economics, Commerce, Biology, Medicine, Industry, planning, education and so on. Sir Ronald A. Fisher, (1890 – 1962), who is called “the Father of Statistics”, drew many solid conclusions

Statistics is the science which deals with the collection of data, organisation of data (or) classification of data, presentation of data, analysis of data and interpretation of data, which are known as the statistical methods.

Introduction

Fungicides continue to be crucial instruments to protect yield and quality since plant diseases can result in considerable crop losses both before and after harvest. In the fight against plant pathogen-caused crop diseases, chemicals are crucial. Chemicals occur in a variety of forms, such as those that kill bacteria, fungus, and nematodes (bactericides, fungicides, and nematicides). These substances need to be handled carefully while battling plant diseases. Significant pre- and post-harvest crop losses can be brought on by fungal infections during transportation and storage. After host resistance, fungicides are regarded as the second line of defence in the struggle against plant diseases.

Agnatha consists of cyclostomes, conodonts and ostracoderms. Among recent animals, cyclostomes are sister to all jawed vertebrates known as gnathostomes. They have little economic importance. It includes the oldest known craniate fossils and has many primitive characteristics.

The oldest fossil of agnathans appeared in the Cambrian period and two groups the lampreys (Hyperoartii) and the hagfish (Myxini or Hyperotreti) comprising about 120 species still survive today (Fig. 6.1).

Hagfishes are considered members of the subphylum Vertebrata, because they secondarily lost vertebrae; before this event was inferred from molecular and developmental data, the group Craniata was created by Linnaeus to reference hagfish and vertebrates.

Antipathogen Chemicals

Anti-pathogen chemicals are chemical substances that serve to slow the activity of pathogens such as fungi, bacteria, and nematodes.

Purpose of Using Chemicals in Plant Disease Management

13.1 Introduction

The fish’s distinguishing features are its fins. The fins constitute the major propulsive organs in fishes. These are either folds of skin or projections from the body surface. What is Fungicide?

The term fungicide is derived from two Latin words, fungus and caedo. The word ‘caedo’ literally means ‘to kill.’ As a result, a fungicide is any agent or chemical that has the power to kill the fungus. Physical agents such as ultraviolet light and heat should also be called fungicides, according to this definition. However, in ordinary use, the term exclusively refers to chemicals. As a result, fungicide is a chemical that can kill fungi.

What is Fungistat?

Certain chemicals do not kill fungal infections. However, they only temporarily stop the fungus’s growth. Fungistat refers to these compounds, while fungistatis refers to the phenomena of temporarily inhibiting fungal growth.

Formulation Technology

An essential first step in any pesticide-based pest management procedure is choosing the right formulation. It’s a crucial managerial choice that affects the bottom line, client happiness, worker safety, and environmental quality. Knowing the characteristics of different formulations is important for both the supervisor and the applicator. The applicator is responsible for both application and mixing. Applicators come into direct touch with the substance, both diluted and concentrated. A basic, personal concern for one’s health and the health of others necessitates understanding the formulation’s safety features.

Temperature describes the kinetic energy of the gases that make up air. As gas molecules move more quickly, air temperature increases. Among several environmental changes, increased air temperature affects the water cycle by increasing water temperature, which causes changes in local weather, water quality and river bodies (Gossiaux et al., 2019). This is because the water temperature is one of the most important factors for physicochemical properties of water quality (Szumiriska et al., 2020), aquatic habitats (Duggals et al., 2018), spawning rates (Besson et al., 2016) and fish growth (Collas et al., 2019) (Fig. 37.1).

India has an 8,118-kilometer-long coastline that stretches through nine Maritime States (Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, West Bengal, Maharashtra, Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, and Goa) and four Union Territories (Daman and Diu, Puducherry, Lakshadweep Islands, and Andaman and Nicobar Islands). Crops and trees can be protected from disease by applying pesticides at precisely scheduled intervals. It may only take a few grammes of the chemical to facilitate its distribution over the aerial parts of the plant, or to treat seeds or other propagating organs (tubers, bulbs, corns, etc.) or the soil in which plants will grow. Any chemical can be used in one of four different physical states: gas, solid, liquid, or solution. As a result, it is critical to employ the most efficient equipment to ensure a uniform deposit of the chemical on the target substrate with minimal material waste in the shortest amount of time and with the least amount of manpower.

Introduction to Molecular Markers in Vegetable Breeding
As global demand for food continues to rise, the agricultural sector faces mounting challenges from climate change and resource limitations. These pressures necessitate an urgent transformation in farming practices, making molecular markers vital for enhancing crop improvement strategies (Tester and Langridge, 2010). Traditional breeding techniques, which often rely on phenotypic selection and protracted breeding cycles, find it increasingly difficult to produce resilient, high-yield cultivars (Bernardo, 2016). Molecular markers, including Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms (SNPs), Simple Sequence Repeats (SSRs), and Amplified Fragment Length Polymorphisms (AFLPs), provide direct access to plant genomes, allowing for the precise identification and manipulation of desirable traits regardless of environmental variability (Varshney et al., 2005). This approach is essential for expediting breeding programs and enhancing genetic gains, ultimately leading to crops better suited for diverse and evolving climates (Jannink et al., 2010).Additionally, the integration of genome-wide association studies (GWAS) and genomic selection (GS) harnesses high-density marker data to deepen our understanding of complex trait genetics, fostering sustainable agricultural practices and securing future food supplies (Hickey et al., 2019).

Abstract

While, life on Earth is dependent on microbes for many essential services, microbes are intimate partners in virtually every life process of plants by way of mobilization/acquisition of nutrients, out-competition and antagonism of pathogens, plant stress alleviation, plant growth promotion, co-metabolism, degradation of toxins, etc. Exploitation of such interactions between microbes and plants and optimization of plant microbiome could allow farmers to apply less chemical fertilizer, and pesticides besides improving overall plant health which paves the way for sustainable development. What is less appreciated, and less well understood, is the mechanism of microbes exerting such benefits to the plants. A greater understanding of how plants and soil microbes live together, communicate, build innate plant immunity, triggers hormone synthesis and benefit each other can therefore provide new strategies to improve plant productivity, while helping to protect the environment and maintain global biodiversity.

Rainfall in India, is a phenomenon that is not just a meteorological event but the very lifeline of the subcontinent, profoundly shaping its landscapes, agriculture, and, most importantly for our study, its diverse aquatic ecosystems and the fisheries they support. India experiences a unique and dominant rainfall regime driven primarily by the monsoon, a seasonal reversal of wind patterns. The arrival, intensity, duration, and spatial distribution of this rainfall have farreaching consequences for the availability of freshwater, the health of rivers, lakes, and wetlands, and the productivity of coastal and marine environments. For aspiring fisheries professionals in India, a thorough understanding of the patterns and vagaries of Indian rainfall is indispensable.
Consider the sheer diversity of aquatic habitats across India, from the snowfed rivers of the Himalayas to the monsoonal wetlands of the Gangetic plains, the brackish backwaters of Kerala, and the vast coastline. The characteristics and productivity of each of these systems are intricately linked to the patterns of rainfall they receive. The monsoon replenishes rivers and groundwater, sustains agricultural practices that can impact water quality, influences the nutrient flow into coastal waters, and can even trigger crucial life cycle events for many aquatic species (Fig. 7.1).

Introduction
Aquaculture has significantly contributed to the increase in global fish production. However, the domestication of only a limited number of species for intensive aquaculture has been achieved in recent decades. A primary challenge in the domestication and sustainable culture of candidate species lies in the standardization of induced breeding techniques. Controlled reproduction in captivity remains suboptimal for many commercially important aquaculture species. In captivity, females of several species often fail to complete oocyte maturation (Corriero et al., 2021), while males exhibit inadequate milt production (Zohar et al., 1989; Peter et al., 1993). Hormonal manipulation and environmental stimulation are considered effective approaches to overcome these challenges and facilitate captive maturation for induced breeding.
Several hormone analogues, such as gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH), follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), and luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone (LHRH), have been developed into commercial formulations like Ovaprim™, Ovatide™, and Wova-FH™, which target the brain-pituitarygonad (BPG) axis. However, these hormones have shown limited efficacy in the induced breeding of some commercially important species, including catfish. Recent studies suggest that neurohypophysial nonapeptide hormones also play a crucial role in modulating the GnRH– onadotropin (GTH)–steroid hormone pathway (Joy and Chaube, 2015). In mammals, nonapeptides include oxytocin (OT) and vasopressin (VP), which are homologous to isotocin (IT) and vasotocin (VT) in teleost fish. These nonapeptides, consisting of nine amino acids, are classified as basic (VT and VP) or neutral (OT and IT), depending on the amino acid at the eighth position. For example, VP has arginine, whereas OT has leucine at this position (Stoop, 2012).
In Heteropneustes fossilis, a novel neuropeptide gene, savetocin, has been identified, distinguished from IT by the substitution of valine for isoleucine at the eighth position. Nonapeptides also have homologues in other organisms, such as annetocin in worms and insects, inotocin in mollusks, and conopressin in leeches and Lymnaea stagnalis. Among vertebrates, lungfish, amphibians,
reptiles, and birds produce mesotocin and vasotocin, whereas marsupials secrete oxytocin and phenypressin (Darlison and Richter, 1999). These findings highlight the diversity and evolutionary significance of nonapeptides,
as well as their potential as novel targets for improving induced breeding in
aquaculture species.

Spermatozoa, the male reproductive cells, play a crucial role in fertilization and subsequent embryonic development. However, toxic substances such as heavy metals(lead) can disrupt spermatozoa function through various mechanisms, including oxidative stress, DNA damage, and disruption of cellular homeostasis. The toxic effects can impair sperm motility, viability, and acrosomal integrity, ultimately leading to reduced fertility. Livestock are not immune to these toxic insults, which can compromise their reproductive efficiency and agricultural productivity. Lead (Pb) is a toxic pollutant and is extensively distributed in the environmental and biological systems. This topic envisages the detrimental effects of lead on spermatozoa functions, shedding light on the underlying mechanisms, signal transduction pathways, and sperm kinematic alterations.

Unsupervised classification is the technique of classification of raster data in which no prior information is provided by the user. Raster data is classified based on their spectral characteristics such that the pixels having similar spectral properties in the multispectral feature space are grouped together in one class. Unsupervised classification is mainly performed by clustering algorithms. The purpose of these algorithms is to minimize within cluster variability and maximize between clusters variability. The user must interpret and label the classes after performing unsupervised classification. This method of classification requires minimum data which makes it easy and quick, but user has toput efforts in identification of the classes. This method could be useful when user doesn’t have any prior knowledge about the study area. This method removes subjectivity and enables us to get the unique classes which might be unrecognized by the user. K-means is the most commonly used method for performing unsupervised classification. In this chapter, we have discussed K- means, CLARA and unsupervised random forest method for classification of raster data in R.

SYNOPSIS

The availability of food is of paramount importance without which it is hard for human beings to survive. The recognized way of making food available is to produce but it is also equally important that food produced is utilized well without loss of edible food materials. Globally, antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is an important public health and development threat (WHO, 2020). Being one of the top 10 global public health threats, the ever-increasing rates in the occurrence of drug-resistant bacterial infections have become a grave public health concern for the governments (Laxminarayan et al., 2013). Moreover, such infections would be difficult to treat and therefore can lead to worse clinical outcomes (Laxminarayan et al., 2013). Worldwide, each year about 700,000 people die from antimicrobial resistant infections and the mortality figures are projected to reach 10 million/ year by 2050 (O’Neill, 2016). The crude infectious disease mortality rate in India is more than 400 per 100,000 persons and at least 23,000 deaths in adults and 58,000 neonatal deaths per year are caused by AMR bacteria (Laxminarayan and Chaudhury, 2016). A 2017 estimate puts the cost of developing an antibiotic at around US$1.5 billion (Towse, et al. 2017). They have become vibrant hubs of activity, offering collaborative spaces, technology-rich environments, and various programs and workshops that enhance the academic experience. The focus has shifted from merely preserving information to facilitating access, promoting information literacy, and supporting the diverse needs of the academic community.

Introduction

The technology behind Internet search engines is advancing quickly, and this has an impact on how individuals find the information they need online as well as how search engines improve their algorithms (N. Zafar et al. 2022). Search engines are playing a prime role in generating leads for businesses (Olbrich and Schultz, 2014), Because of this, search engines are regarded as the most recent online communication channels for dynamic marketing (Olbrich and Schultz, 2014). To examine how academic institutions (in higher education) use the web to facilitate student relations and identify how prospective students are using the Internet to research academic institutions, Will et al. conducted a study that involved the analysis of more than 3000 university websites. The web continues to be the primary research resource for prospective students, counselors, and parents. The research was undertaken (Sampath Kumar and Kumar, 2013) to determine whether or not academics utilized search engines to access scholarly content from the internet. 285 (95%) of the 300 respondents used search engines to find academic content, compared to just 5% who didn’t. To access the Ed-tech companies that are playing a role in academia, comparable assessment is crucial.

For too long, the study of fisheries has sometimes been perceived as largely focused on the biology and ecology within the water itself. While these aspects are undeniably vital, the reality is that aquatic environments are not isolated entities. They are inextricably linked to the atmosphere above and the land surrounding them. The weather patterns we experience daily – from sunshine and rainfall to storms and temperature fluctuations – directly impact the physical and chemical characteristics of our oceans, lakes, and rivers. Similarly, the geographical landscape, including topography, soil composition, and coastal features, plays a critical role in shaping these aquatic habitats. Consider for a moment the seemingly simple act of rain. Rainfall over land influences river discharge, bringing nutrients and sediments into freshwater and coastal systems.
