Abiotic Stress in Plants
             
World population is growing at an alarming rate and may reach about 6 billion by the end of the year 2050. Though, the agricultural productivity is also being increased world over, yet it is not keeping pace to meet the demand of food availability. The main reasons for limiting the agricultural productivity are water shortage, depleting soil fertility and mainly various abiotic stresses and climatic change. Minimizing these loses is of primary concern for all nations to cope with the increasing food requirement. The abiotic stress is defined as the negative impact of non living factors on the living organism in a specific environment and abiotic stress is the most harm full factor concerning the growth and productivity of crops worldwide. Researches have shown that abiotic stressors are at their most harm full when they occur together in combination of abiotic stress factors (Mittler, 2006; Bianco and Defez, 2011). Numerous stresses caused by complex environmental conditions i.e. drought, too high and too low temperatures, freezing, salinity, UV light, heavy metals and recently through smog (air pollution) leading to substantial crop losses worldwide (Mahajan and Tuteja, 2005). The abiotic stresses might increase in the near future even because of global climatic change.

Plants that are affected by various abiotic stresses react differently as a result such as the reduction in organ size or a change in the antioxidant enzyme system, and while drought and heat are often studied separately, in nature they often occur together, meaning it is essential to carry out joint studies. Furthermore, and related to the above when we consider high temperature stress, one must always consider the use of water and nutrients by the plant and other physiological functions. The effects of heat stress can also be analyzed by the technique that measures lipid peroxidation in polyunsaturated acids of the plasma membrane. The accumulation of metals in plants, affects the normal processes of plant metabolism. The study shows that there is a relationship between high metal contents in plants and their modified morphology: strong reduction of leaf thickness, modified parenchyma structure, and decreased mitochondria organization were ascertained, although toxic symptoms were apparently absent. Water-deficit stress has a significant effect on plants growth and development, with primary affects on plant structure, leaf morphology and cell ultrastructure. Physiological processes such as stomatal conductance, photosynthesis and respiration are consequently impaired with further implications on the metabolic functions such as carbohydrate and energy production as well as carbohydrate translocation and utilization.

The stresses, drought, salinity, chemicals, cold and hot temperatures, have interconnected effects on plants, resulting in the disruption of protein homeostasis. Maintenance of proteins in their functional native conformations and preventing aggregation of non-native proteins are important for cell survival under stress. The heat shock proteins buffer this environmental variation and are therefore important factors for the maintenance of homeostasis across environmental regimes. Heat shock proteins are known to be expressed in plants experiencing high-temperature stress. Heat shock proteins are important in relation to stress resistance and adaptation to the environment. Their molecular function might be membrane or protein stabilization, but, for now, for most heat shock proteins the molecular function remains to be elucidated. The general observation of the response and induction of heat shock proteins following heat stress suggests that they play a fundamental role in cellular homeostasis. It is possible that heat shock proteins may be involved with the phenomenon of acquired thermotolerance. Heat stress disturbs cellular homeostasis and can lead to severe retardation in growth and development, and even death. Temperature stress can have also a devastating effect on both the plant anabolism and catabolism, initially acting on protein complexes, being the quaternary structure the first folding that is lost during heat stress or heating. Understanding the role of HSPs in relation to stress resistance in a more applied perspective as a potential indicator of stress is important. New technological developments make it possible to investigate the role of genes coding for heat shock proteins in greater detail. A combination of genomics and proteonomics will further elucidate the effects of stress on expression patterns at the DNA, RNA and protein level.

Introduction

The book has been framed as a text book cum vegetable production manual for both under graduate and post graduate students of Agriculture/ Horticulture as well as commercial vegetable production professionals. This book has been oriented on different management practices of vegetable culture in open field condition viz., Classification of vegetable crops, Management of seedlings in the nursery, Water managent, Plant nutrient management, Pollination management, Integrated pest management, Biological management of diseases, Weed management and Production technology of different vegetable crops.

Classification of vegetable crops

Vegetables are defined as herbaceous plant origin material with generally low calorific value providing micronutrients, vitamins, antioxidants, fibre and induce alkaline reaction inside human body. Vegetable crops are not only botanically different but also their cultural and climatic adaptation shows wide variability. It is, therefore, necessary to classify the vegetable crops for their easy recognition. Vegetable crops can conveniently be classified “Botanically” for the purpose of vegetable breeding and according to “Method of culture” from the point of crop husbandry.

Botanical classification

The crops used for vegetable purpose in the world belong to 1200 species under 78 families and of them, more than 860 species under 59 families belong to dicotyledoneae and about 340 species under 19 families belong to monocotyledoneae. In the tropical and subtropical parts of the world, about 90 species of vegetable crops are cultivated, but hardly 20 of them are commercially important.

In the present botanical classification, over 140 different vegetable crops under 6 monocotyledoneae and 20 dicotyledoneae families have been included.

1. Seedling management in the nursery

Seedlings of many seed propagated vegetable crops like, tomato, brinjal, chillies, sweet pepper, cauliflower, cabbage, knolkhol, broccoli, Brussels sprout, kale, endive, chicory, celery, lettuce, parsley, onion, etc. are first raised in the nursery beds before transplanted in the main field although, many of these crops like, tomato, sweet pepper, onion, cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, etc. are also direct seeded using precision seed drills in the USA, Japan, the Netherlands, Italy and other European countries. Many seed propagated vegetable crops viz., okra, peas, beans, radish, carrot, beet, turnip and all the cucurbits (e.g. bitter gourd, bottle gourd, pumpkin, cucumber, watermelon, muskmelon, snake gourd, sponge gourd, ridge gourd, etc.) are conventionally grown through direct seeding in the main field.

Transplant groups

1. Plants easy to transplant: They form new roots rapidly, put forth shoots rather slowly and absorb water readily e.g. beet, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower, Swiss chard, lettuce and tomato.

2. Plants transplanted with moderate ease: This group replace roots and grow shoots a bit slower than the previous group and do not absorb water very efficiently e.g. celery, brinjal, onion, pepper, leek and cauliflower.

Introduction

Potato is one of the four major food crops of the world and is also a very popular vegetable crop. It is extensively cultivated in China, Russian Federation, Ukarine, Poland, Ireland, Great Britain, Germany, Netherlands, France, Spain, South America, India and USA. Potato was brought from Peru to Spain by the Spaniards in 1565 when it was widely grown in Spain and Italy. They were probably brought to England about 1586 by Sir Francis Drake. Potato was introduced in India in early 17^th century probably by the Portuguese. Now it is one of the principal cash crops of India.

Importance and use

• Potato is the fourth major food crops of the world after rice, wheat and maize.
• Being a major source of carbohydrate it is often used as a substitute for cereals.
• It is one of the major vegetable crops of the world and is grown in almost every country.
• In India, it is considered as a staple vegetable and used either alone or mixed with other vegetables.
• Potato is used as vegetable in various forms such as, boiled, mashed, baked, fried and cooked in sambar and different curries of vegetable, fish and meat.
• Potato is processed into different commercially used dehydrated, canned and fried products like, shredded potato, sliced potato, chips, flakes, French fries, finger chips, granules, disc, cubes, flour, etc.
• It is used for several industrial purposes such as production of starch, alcohol, dextrin, glucose, etc.
• Potato starch is a large grained starch and contains 25 % amylase and 73 % amylopectin and high phosphate content.

Entrepreneurship means all the activities that a person has to do to start and run businesses in line with social, political and economic changes. Businesses include activities related to consumer likes and dislikes, feelings and behaviors, likes and dislikes and the introduction of business plans to meet all of consumer expectations. Entrepreneurship is seen as a ‘new product’ that will enable entrepreneurs to develop a new type of business organization and new business activities that address the changing needs of the community. 

Entrepreneurial climate depends on the existing economic system. Existing social and political establishment and existing economic policies of Government determine the economic system. Entrepreneurial development is largely due to the existence of this economic system. Business development functioning as a new component, economic structure and economic transformation. The economic system varies from country to country, so the business development process varies.

An entrepreneur has a wide range of options regarding his or her project in various fields such as product / service, market, technology, equipment, production scale, time division and location. Therefore, the identification of investment opportunities (projects) requires an understanding of one’s work environment, potential investment sensitivity, a hypothetical analysis of various factors and the probability of luck. This chapter deals with the evaluation and evaluation of project ideas, the steps of the project identification process and the consideration of involvement in the identification of new projects by an existing company.

The term “entrepreneur” was coined in America in the late 70’s. A few executives of major corporations in the United States left their jobs to start their own small businesses because the top executives in these companies were not accepting new ideas. Managers who have become entrepreneurs find amazing success in their new businesses. Some of them were dangerous to companies they left a few years ago. This type of businessman came to be known as entrepreneurs. Such a brain drain is a global phenomenon and is not limited to the United States. Industrialists around the world began designing routes and suspending the flight of their most prominent officers. In 1976 Norman Macras wrote to the London Economist that large successful companies should become ‘business partners’’.

An Entrepreneur is an individual who creates a new business, bearing most of the risks and enjoying most of the rewards. The process of setting up a business is known as entrepreneurship. An Entrepreneur is commonly seen as an innovator, a source of new ideas, goods, services and business procedures. Entrepreneurship plays a key role in any economy by using the skills and initiative necessary to anticipate needs and bringing good new ideas to market.

Introduction

Fruits are undoubtedly God’s gift to mankind. Fruits are protective foods as they contain vitamins, minerals and enzymes, necessary for better functioning of human body and for fighting diseases. History of fruits is as old as that of Adam and Eve who ate the forbidden apple. Date palm seems to be the earliest fruit cultivated by man as early as 7000 B.C. Pomegranate is also one of the oldest fruits which was under cultivation as early as 3500 B.C. During ancient times, monks survived solely on fruits and milk giving an indication about importance of fruits and antiquity of fruits in India. India is the place of origin of mango, banana, phalsa, jack fruit, bael, aonla and a few citrus fruits whereas all other fruits are introduced from foreign countries. Litchi, loquat, persimmon, peach and sweet orange are from China; papaya, guava, sapota, avocado, custard apple and pineapple are from tropical America; and apple, plum, pear, date palm, mangosteen, strawberry, cherry, almond, walnut, apricot, grape and pomegranate are from the Central Asiatic Regions.

Introduction

India has a long history in the cultivation of vegetable crops and it sustains the livelihood of a large section of population directly or indirectly. Vegetable crops offer high returns,  have a potential to alleviate the poverty of people, provide nutritional security and essential raw materials for agro industries. These crops also offer greater rural employment opportunity and have high potential for foreign exchange earning. India bestowed with varied soil and high climatic conditions has excellent potential for growing both tropical and temperate vegetables. India is the second largest producer of vegetables in the world after China. The total area under vegetables is estimated 5.9 million ha which contributes more than 2.5% of total cropped area. The production is estimated  90.83 milion tonnes. China having a production of about 278.59 million tonnes  is the largest producer of vegetable crops in the world. The annual growth rate in vegetables is of the order of 2.6%. Potato, brinjal, tomato, chilli, cabbage, onion, cauliflower,okra and peas are grown on commercial scale. West Bengal, Uttar Predesh, Bihar, Orissa and Karnataka are the leading vegetable producing states. Maharashtra, Gujarat, Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh and Andra Pradesh are the leading states in onion production where as West Bengal, Uttar Predesh and Bihar are the leading potato producing states. Bengal, Orissa, Bihar and Assam are the leading brinjal producing states.

Introduction

Flowers are the most fascinating objects in the world and many poems are written glorifying them. They are associated with mankind from the dawn of civilization. Flowers are an integral part of our day to day life and they find a place in worshiping, religious and social functions, wedding, interior decoration and self adornment. Flowers are used to convey the human feelings. To say it with flowers is very common in western culture. Emergence of a strong middle class and changing life style has created a great demand for cut flowers in India.

Introduction

Plantation crops are high value industrial crops with great economic importance and play vital role in trade. It contributes to environment protection and sustains a large number of agrobased industries. It has great potential for utilization of waste lands in varied agro-ecosystems like rainfed, dryland, hilly, arid and coastal, providing higher employment opportunities, nutritional security, eco-friendly, high potential for foreign exchange earnings and above all providing livelihood security to people. They contribute 25% of AGDP. Major plantation crops grown in India are coconut,cardamom,cinchona, arecanut, oilpalm, cashew, palmyra, rubber, cocoa, tea and coffee. These crops grown between 20° N and 20° S of equator occupy nearly 3.2 million ha with a production of 9.8 million tonnes. All these crops are perennial in nature and demand  labour round the year. All plantation crops enter international trade and all of them have a long juvenile period. Coconut, arecanut and cashew are cultivated by individual land  owners who are not organized to the same extent as  planters of tea, coffee and rubber.

Introduction

Spices hold a special place in world trade and were a catalyst in many historical events, discoveries, wars and inventions. It has even been cited as an important element in the spread of knowledge and culture. Spices are non-leafy parts of plants used as a flavoring or seasoning. Asia is known as ‘Land of Spices’ as it is the place of origin, production, consumption and export of most spices. Out of the world’s 70 plant species grown as spices, 13 are considered major spices produced in Asia. Spices had many uses, from adding flavour to food to medicinal properties, but only grew in a few places. In the last decade, the annual average growth in spice production was 4.3% and trade in spices grew at an average of 5.8% /year. More sophisticated consumers, health-conscious eating habits (but also the rise in the amount of processed foods that use herbs and spices as inputs), rising incomes, increased world trade and globalisation are driving this new era of profitability. Spices are ideal commodities for international trade. They are normally exported in raw or dried form and are usually easy to store and transport. Consequently they do not need expensive infrastructure such as cold chain management or advanced storage facilities and they are not particularly time sensitive. In addition, they are recognised as high value products that can be produced relatively easily on small farms and do not require investments in advanced technology and machinery.

Minerals are the building blocks of the earth’s crust. Derived inorganically, either as chemical elements or more often as chemical compounds, minerals are essentially solid. Minerals often form crystals, while aggregate of minerals constitute a rock. Mineralogy is the discipline devoted to the study of minerals including their formation, occurrence, properties, composition and classification . Needless to say, the subject of mineralogy is the foundation of crystallography, petrology and other branches of geology.

Section A dealing with Minerals comprises nine chapters. Chapter I presents salient features of the earth including composition. and structure of the crust mantle and core. Chapter II presents their categories and the how minerals derive their names. Since minerals are essentially a combination of atoms and molecules the significance of chapter III which deals with crystal chemistry cannot be over emphasized.. Chapter IV and V deal with physical and optical properties of minerals which are crucial in identifying them in hand specimens and under the polarising microscope. Classification of minerals and their occurrence is dealt in a general way in chapter VI while descriptive mineralogy is presented in Chapters VII ( Silicate Mnerals) and VIII ( Non-Silicate Mnerals). Minerals are no doubt a subject of serious scientific curiosity but ultimately their use to man is by far the most important theme. Chapter IX therefore is devoted exclusively to different uses that are minerals are put to. The chapter ends with eye opening information as to the quantum of minerals that man uses, taking one of the most industrialized nation USA as an example.

The Mineral Kingdom presents a dazzling floral-display in the form of natural crystals. This is what makes mineralogy a very fascinating subject both for an amateur as well as an expert. Unless one visits the celebrated Lechuguilla cave in New Mexcio, USA it will be difficult to visualize the breathtaking beauty that crystals present. This, over 160 km cave is lined with gigantic as well as delicate gypsum crystals- as thin as human hair to several centimetres across and 6 m long . Crystals come in all shapes, sizes and colours. Their beauty and regular shape has not only attracted the scientists but made them objects of magical and mythical powers in many cultures of the world.

The study of crystals - including their growth, structure, classification by form and their physical properties forms the subject of crystallography. As of today one can’t think of this subject without x-ray crystallography, however, this being not in your syllabus only an introduction will be presented in the last chapter, while the entire section will be devoted to fundamental aspects of crystal morphology.

The section comprises four chapters. Chapter I describes and introduces the theme, presents a brief historical background of the development of the subject and gives some fundamental definitions. Chapter II presents the morphological elements including symmetry elements( plane, axes and centre of symmetry), parameters, indices, notation of crystal faces and other related aspects which are the basis for dividing crystals of all shapes and sorts into six or seven systems and several sub-types. This chapter will help you understand as to why mineral galena belongs to cubic system, while gypsum is monoclinic, or as to why an octahedron is represented by a symbol (111) but a cube with (100). Chapter III describes the seven systems and their sub-types and ends with an account of twinning- a curious feature quite often encountered among crystals. The section ends with a preliminary idea about stereographic projection and x-ray crystallography.

A rock is the home for minerals. In other words, naturally occurring coherent aggregate of minerals (or glassy mass) will constitute a rock. Like in a family, more often, there are several members(minerals) within a rock but occasionally just one mineral also makes a rock( olivine in dunite, quartz in quartzite and calcite in marble). The root word petros is of Greek origin, meaning rock and a petrologist is one who specializes in the study of rocks. The three main categories of rocks are distinguished on the basis of their origin. Igneous rocks are the ones that have solidified from a molten state in deep seated conditions, as also on the surface while Sedimentary rocks are formed from the erosion of preexisting rocks and subsequent re-deposition or precipitation of the resulting material at or near the surface. Metamorphic rocks on the other hand, are formed by the action of heat or pressure or both on preexisting rocks.

The theme of rocks is split into five chapters. The first chapter introduces the theme of petrology, petrography and petrogenesis., presents rocks as the storehouses of minerals and their grouping into three classes. The second chapter presents all the important aspects of igneous rocks( plutonic, hypabasal and volcanic) including their forms, texture, structure, chemistry and classification and variation diagrams. It also presents a somewhat sufficient description of different kinds of igneous rocks under the categories of ultrabasic, basic, intermediate acid and alkalic rocks. The chapter ends with an introduction to some of the peculiar kinds of igneous rocks and also presents a brief account of causes of diversity among igneous rocks.

Chapter III is devoted to the study of sedimentary rocks beginning with nature and categories of sediments and general factors that affect sedimentary process. Sequence of breakdown, sedimentary minerals, depositional environment , classification of sediments and sedimentary rocks is the next theme followed by primary and secondary and biogenic structures. The next theme is a description of important sedimentary rocks under different categories ( rudaceous, arenaceous, asrgillaceous and rocks of biogenic origin). The chapter ends with introducing sedimentary rocks as the home for natural resources.

Chapter IV dwells on metamorphic rocks distinguishing between metamorphism and metasomatism. Metamorphic minerals and naming metamorphic rocks is the next theme. Next, agents and types of metamorphism is followed by grade, zones, index minerals and metamorphic facies. Textures, structures and the description of metamorphic rocks comes next. The use of triangular plots in metamorphic petrology is introduced and ends with considering metamorphic process in the light of global tectonics.

The last chapter is a short but important chapter- The Rock Cycle which combines the three important geo-processes of igneous activity, sedimentary process and metamorphism while presenting a birds eye view of them. It considers the movement, not only of matter but also the energy that drives the rock cycle. The chapter closes with introducing the rock-cycle-mineral deposits relationship.

As milk to a cow or fruit to a tree, ore is to Earth Sciences. Different academic and scientific aspects of geology are of no consequence to a common man. Ores and ore minerals from which valuable constituents could be extracted profitably is what the world is after- be it the continental masses, oceanic depths, desolate icy Antarctic tracts or now, even other planets of the solar system. The subject of economic geology is thus a subject of greatest interest among other natural sciences.

This last section will dwell on the theme of metallic and non metallic ore deposits. The first chapter begins with fundamental definitions, signifying the importance of minerals in human affairs. It also looks at ore minerals against the background of average crustal composition and presents a glossary of important terms in economic geology. The second chapter is a lengthy chapter devoted to the ways ore deposits are formed ( ore genesis). Broadly, the processes are described under two categories, the internal processes and the surface processes. Fuel minerals are taken separately towards the end of this chapter. Chapter III briefly introduces the relationship between location of minerals deposits to the revolutionary theme of global tectonics which attempts to answer why a mineral deposits occurs where it occurs.

The fourth chapter is devoted entirely to the Indian Mineral Deposits. It begins with a few important themes of mineral economics and dwells on the description of important Indian Mineral Deposits as to their geology, geography and economic potential. Lastly, the fifth chapter exclusively deals with the facts and figures of the Indian Mineral Industry presenting recent available data of resources, production, import, export and future prospects. It also gives a brief introduction to the important geo-scientific organizations of the country.

Pests

The English name ‘Pest’ is derived from the Latin word ‘Pestis’, which means causing destruction. Pests are defined as ‘those organisms, which compete with man in his food supply, damage his possessions and attack himself’. They are of vital concern to mankind in their everyday life, as they cause considerable damage directly as well as indirectly to crops, domestic animals, birds and to man himself. They are also responsible for causing or transmitting many serious diseases. Pests include thousands of invertebrates such as, insects, nematodes, mites, ticks, snails and slugs, crabs etc. and vertebrates such as, rats, squirrels, jackals, pigs and boars, porcupines, rabbits, deers, bats, some species of birds etc., which are destructive to plants and livestock. Several microorganisms such as, fungi, bacteria, viruses, mycoplasma, phytoplasma etc. are also pests in nature. Weeds and phanerogamic parasites are also pests in the true sense.

‘Insect pest control’ includes all measures adopted to make the life of insects hard and ultimately to destroy them or to prevent their multiplication and spread. Such measures can be taken up before the appearance of the pests or after occurrence of the pests. To achieve this purpose , it is quite necessary to know the factors, which favor the occurrence of the pests and acquire enough knowledge about the nature and life cycle of the pests, the vulnerable growth stage at which they can be effectively destroyed and appropriate measures of control to destroy them Control measures may be either preventive or direct.

Need for pest control

Control measures for the control of pests have to be taken up as soon as the infestation reaches the economic threshold level. Failure to control the pests at this stage will result in further increase in the pest population and consequent loss in yield and economic loss.

The need for pest control is of two kinds :

i) For yield maximization. The only objective of pest control in this method is to maximize the yield. The cost incurred for pest control is most often more than the income accrued as a result of pest control. The method is adopted only with the object of increasing the yield as much as possible so that the country and the people may be benefited. In this method, pest control operations are taken up before the actual occurrence of the pest or before the pest infestation reaches the economic threshold level. Such treatments taken up to control the pests before their occurrence are known as ‘prophylactic treatments’

The chemicals, which can destroy pests or prevent their occurrence by their chemical action are known as ‘Pesticides’. Pesticides include ‘insecticides’, acaricides’, ‘nematicides’, rodenticides’, molluscicides’ etc., which are used to destroy insect pests, mites, nematodes, rodents, slugs and snails respectively. Pesticides have been used even before the time when man never knew how to read and write. Even before 200 BC, several substances were known to control pests. Sulfur, arsenic poisons, fluorine poisons, as well as some plant extracts and oils were used to control pests. However, these substances could destroy only a few specific pests only to some extent.

Advances in the invention of pesticides

The invention of many of the present day pesticides started only after 1867. ‘Paris green’, a synthetic chemical was the first pesticide used to control the ‘Colorodo beetles’ of potato. Up to 1939, only a few inorganic chemical compounds and plant poisons were used as pesticides. Only after the Second World War much advances were made in chemical research. After the invention of DDT in 1939, a revolution had started in the field of pest control. Following the introduction of DDT, several other pesticides were identified and introduced for pest control. In 1941, BHC was invented by the British and French scientists. During the same period, organophosphorus pesticides were invented by the German scientists and parathion, malathion, demeton etc. were introduced.

For effective and economic control of pests, besides selection of appropriate plant protection chemicals, application of the chemicals at the most vulnerable growth stage of the pests and use of chemicals at the correct dosage, selection of proper plant protection appliances to carry out the operation is also of vital importance, so as to ensure uniform application of the chemicals.

Plant protection chemicals are mostly used as sprays and dusts using sprayers and dusters respectively. However, in most of the cases spraying is preferred to dusting. Different types of sprayers and dusters are being used for these operations and in both, there are manually operated as well as power operated equipments and in sprayers there are both hydraulic and pneumatic types of sprayers.

The nature of the pesticide formulations to be used and the purpose for which they are used also determine the type of equipment to be used. Dusters are used for dusting insecticidal dust formulations. Sprayers are used for spraying insecticidal liquid formulations. Granular applicators are used to apply granular formulations. Fumigators are used to apply fumigants to fumigate godowns, warehouses, rat holes etc. Soil injectors are used to inject pesticides at a particular depth of soil under pressure. Flame throwers are used to throw f lames at specified targets.

A few months back when Sharad Deshpande was talking about some processing tomatoes, I said that there is a lot of history behind processing tomatoes. He said then why don’t you speak on the subject and I said why not. So that is how this talk happened. First, I thought I will speak on breeding tomatoes as its history is even more interesting than what has happened later. I had heard a story when I went to USA for the first time in 1982. I was with Dr Charlie Rick, the father of tomato genetics, in his lab in USDA, UC, Davis, California. He talked about how the processing industry happened, who bred the types suitable for processing, how 80 percent of processing tomatoes of the USA came from California, where we are today and what could be done in this area.

At the outset, I need to state that I am not a horticultural specialist and whatever horticulture knowledge have, is gained on the job and I am a plant genetic resources specialist with an interest in biodiversity and have worked across Asia. Today we will be mainly talking about tropical fruits and, in particular, tropical fruit tree genetic resources. If you look at tree fruits as a group, it includes a large number of species, unlike in field crops, e.g., rice, wheat, maize, etc., where just a few species are involved in each crop. Here we are talking about a group of species under each fruit tree. While talking about them, certain generalizations have to be made. Also, there are many unexploited species which are waiting to be discovered for human usage and exploitation, and there is hardly any genetic information available about them.

India is well known for its rich flora and fauna and is referred as one of the richest biodiversity nations of the world. The mammalian population of India is a combination of Palaearctic, Oriental and Afro-tropical fauna (Sahajpal et al. 2009). It is the home of 400 different mammalian species, 129 of these species are protected under Wildlife (Protection) Act 1972 (India) and an arbitrator to Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) (Nameer, 2015). Illegal trade of the wildlife for preparation of various products is the common issue in the conservation and is also responsible for regional extinction of the species.

Hausman (1920a) worked on the microscopic structure of hair from the commercial fur. The hair samples of 27 different species of animals were used for the study. He described in detail the structural features of guard hair. He classified medulla of hair into 4 different types as discontinuous, continuous, fragmental and interrupted on the basis of composition of medullar cells. He also classified the cuticular scale pattern into two types as imbricate interrupted and imbricate coronal. He mentioned in detail the methods for the preparation of slides for the study of microscopic structures of hair. He also studied the cortex and pigment granules.

The present study on trichology of domestic and wild animals was conducted in the Postgraduate laboratory of the Department of Veterinary Anatomy and Histol ogy, Nagpur Veterinary College, Nagpur. The study was undertaken with an aim of species differentiation from the guard hair of domestic as well as wild animals. The hair samples were collected from a total of eight domestic animal species and six wild animal species. Six animals from each species were studied and only three animals studied from the Sambar species as only three animals from this species was reported for post-mortem to the Nagpur Veterinary College, Nagpur within the period of research.

4.1. Physical characteristics

4.1.1. Colour, number of bands and hair profile

The physical characteristics of hair like colour, number of bands and hair profile showed huge variations in the same individual from region to region particularly in the domestic animal species. So, these features of hair cannot be considered as an important tool for species identification from hair. These findings are in accor dance with the observations of Sarkar et al. (2011). Who mentioned that the coat of mammalian species varies with season, habitat and sex of the individuals.

Definition of Plant Pathology

‘Plant pathology’ may be defined as ‘the study of microorganisms and of the environmental factors that cause disease in plants; of the mechanisms by which these factors induce disease in plants; and of the methods of preventing or controlling disease and reducing the damage it causes’. Plant Pathology or ‘Phytopathology’ is a branch of Biological Science, which exclusively deals with plant diseases and various aspects connected with plant diseases. The term Phytopathology had been derived from the Latin language. The Latin word ‘PHYTON‘ means plants; ‘PATHOS‘ means suffering and ‘LOGOS‘ means Science. So, Phytopathology means the Science dealing with suffering plants. Trees, shrubs, grasses etc., whether cultivated or wild are termed as plants and they form the majority of the earth’s living environment. These plants, which are so vital for humans, animals and insects are vulnerable to attack by numerous microorganisms, called ‘plant pathogens’. Some environmental factors are also detrimental to the normal growth of plants, resulting in diseases. Diseased plants exhibit some type of abnormalities and these abnormalities are termed as ‘disease symptoms’. Depending upon the pathogens attacking the plants or adverse environmental factors the disease symptoms vary markedly.

The Science of Plant Pathology has four main objectives:

1. To acquire knowledge about biotic plant pathogens and abiotic environmental factors, which are responsible for causing diseases.
2. To know more about the occurrence and mode of spread of the pathogens on a large scale.
3. To study the interaction between the host and the pathogen with respect to environmental factors.
4. To adopt suitable methods of preventing or controlling the diseases, thereby reducing the damage caused by the pathogens.

Systematic knowledge about Plant Pathology will be of much help in protecting the plants from attack by the pathogens, thereby allowing the plants to grow and attain maturity according to their genetic potential.

‘Plant disease management’ involves the integration of various measures adopted to protect the plants by preventing them from contact with the pathogenic organisms, preventing the growth of the pathogens causing diseases, preventing sporulation of the pathogens and spread of diseases, destroying insect vectors responsible for transmitting diseases and such other prophylactic and curative measures. The ultimate aim of these measures is to avoid large-scale occurrence of diseases, reduce the severity of diseases and minimizing the losses caused by diseases. In disease management, importance should be given to control all the diseases attacking a particular crop at a particular time, especially those which occur in severe form in all the seasons and cause extensive damage to the crop and yield loss. Each and every crop is subjected to attack by one or more than one diseases. At the same time the control measures for controlling each of the disease may differ. In this respect a knowledge of the pathogen causing the disease, the symptoms of the disease, mode of infection and spread of the disease, the growth stage at which the crop is attacked, interaction between the host (crop) and the pathogen and weather conditions favorable for the occurrence and spread of the disease is absolutely necessary, so as to adopt suitable control measures to combat the disease and to minimize the damage to the crop, and reduce the yield loss.

The occurrence and spread of diseases are very much influenced by the environment, host and the pathogen. When the environmental conditions are suitable for the pathogen and not quite suitable for the host, the incidence of the disease is liable to be more. Further, if the host plants are not maintained properly and are weak, then they are more vulnerable to attack by the pathogen and the disease incidence may be severe. When the inoculum of the pathogen is present abundantly, the chances of attack by the pathogen are also more. Taking these facts into consideration, plant disease management is depicted as ‘manipulation of the disease triangle’ (Fig. 60)

All control measures should be aimed at protecting the plants from becoming diseased and not at curing the plants after they have become diseased. The principal methods adopted for controlling plant diseases are broadly categorized under five different heads viz. :

CEREALS

Rice (Oryza sativa)

Pyricularia oryzae

‘Rice blast’ occurs in more than 80 countries across the world. The disease is more prevalent in Thailand, Japan, America, Guyana, Philippines and India. It is particularly serious in places, where rice is irrigated or receives heavy rainfall and where high levels of nitrogenous fertilizers are applied. Rice blast was first reported in China in 1637, in Japan in 1704 and in India in 1913. In India, it is found in all rice growing states, particularly in Telungu Desam, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh. Assam, Tripura, West Bengal, Bihar, Orissa, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry and causes considerable damage to rice crop. In Tamil Nadu, the disease occurs in all rice growing districts and attains epidemic proportions in some seasons. Several rice blast epidemics have occurred in different parts of the world, causing yield losses ranging from 50 to 90 %. In Tamil Nadu, a serious epidemic of the disease occurred in 1919 in the Thanjavur Delta.

Symptoms. The disease, though chiefly a foliage disease, attacks other parts of rice plants, such as leaf sheath, rachis, joints of the culms and even the glumes. On the leaves, the initial symptoms appear as small bluish or grayish specks, which remain circular in older leaves. On young leaves, they enlarge and become eye-shaped, diamond-shaped or spindle-shaped spots, extending over several centimeters in length and about 1.0 cm. in width. The central portion of the lesion appears pale green or grayish green and water-soaked in the beginning. In older spots, the center becomes white to gray with a dark-brown margin surrounded by a yellow hallow. The lesions may coalesce, cover large area of the leaves and eventually the entire leaves are killed. The shape, size and color of the spots vary depending upon the variety, growth stage of the plants and environmental conditions. Similar spots may be formed on the leaf sheath also. During severe incidence, large areas of the leaves dry and die and the entire crop presents a burnt appearance. Hence the disease is known as ‘blast disease’. Leaf blast is more severe during the seedling and maximum tillering stages. In the nursery, the seedlings show numerous spots on the leaves, which wither and die. In case of severe infection, large number of seedlings may die. Blast also affects the leaf collar, which results in the death of the entire leaf.

The disease attacks the stem-nodes at the heading stage leading to production of ‘white panicles’ or the stem may break at the infected node. Rarely the internodes are affected. Further, at heading the fungus also attacks the panicle neck, which is girdled and becomes shining black and shrivelled. This is the most destructive phase of the disease and is known as ‘neck blast’, ‘neck rot’ or ‘panicle blast’. If infection of the panicle neck occurs early, the grains become chaffy and the panicle remains erect. If panicle neck infection occurs late, the grains become partially filled and because of the weight of the grains, the panicle breaks at the neck- node and droops. Sometimes, only parts of the panicle and joints of the culms and some glumes are infected and develop brown to black spots (Fig. 1).

Under conditions highly favorable for the pathogen, even the varieties resistant to the fungus under normal conditions are also attacked and small, round or short elliptical spots develop. However, the spots normally do not enlarge as typical blast spots.

FRUIT CROPS

Banana (Musa species)

Fusarium oxysporum f.sp. cubense

‘Panama disease’, ‘Fusarium wilt’ or ’vascular wilt’ of banana is one of the most serious and destructive diseases of the crop. The disease was first reported from Australia in 1874. Now, it is widely distributed all over the world, including America, Africa, Sri Lanka, Burma, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Hawai, Fiji, the Philippines, India, Australia and New Zealand. In India, it is prevalent in the states of Assam, Bihar, Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Telungu Desam, Maharashtra and West Bengal.

Symptoms. Usually the symptoms are manifested, when the banana plants are about 5 months old. However, under highly favorable conditions for the pathogen, even 2 - 3 months old plants show wilt symptoms. Initial visible symptoms appear as pale yellow streaks, lengthwise in the petioles of the oldest, lowermost leaves. Two types of symptoms follow this. In the first type, the old leaves turn yellow progressively and finally they break from the petiole and hang down. In the second type, the leaves break from the petiole and hang down, without becoming chlorotic. Gradually, all the leaves collapse and hang down, except the crown, which alone stands upright. The newly formed leaves show yellow blotches and wrinkling of the lamina. Often, the leaf sheaths covering the pseudostem show longitudinal splitting above the ground level. But, sometimes this symptom may not appear. The affected plants may die completely in about 4-6 weeks after the appearance of yellow streaks on the petioles.

The vascular strands show discoloration varying from yellow to dark- brown, which is the characteristic internal symptom of the disease. The discoloration usually appears first in the outer leaf sheaths and extends to the vascular strands of the pseudostem. Vascular discoloration is more pronounced in the corms, but is not common in the roots. When the rhizome of an infected plant is cut transversely, the discoloration of the vascular bundles is distinctly seen as numerous, pin-point like dots all over the cut surface. The roots of affected plants become black and rotten. The suckers growing from the diseased corms are systemically affected and they wilt and die very soon (Fig. 71).

The causal organism. The mycelium of the fungus is hyaline, septate, much branched and mostly intracellular. Few hyphae may also be present in the intercellular spaces. The hyphae are largely confined to the vascular bundles, often filling the cavity of the vessels. The fungus produces three types of spores viz., macroconidia, microconidia and chlamydospores. The sporodochia bearing conidiophores and conidia emerge through the stomata on the petioles and leaves. The conidiophores are vertically branched. Macroconidia are borne at the apical ends of the main and lateral branches and are formed in succession one after another. They are thin-walled, hyaline, pedicellate, sickle-shaped, with both ends somewhat pointed, 2 - 5 septate, mostly 3-septate and measure 22.0 - 36.0 x 4.0 - 5.0µ in size. Microconidia are produced from the branches of conidiophores or from the tips of hyphae in very large numbers. They are single-celled or two-celled, thin-walled, hyaline, ovate or elongated and measure 5.0 - 7.0 x 2.5 - 3.0µ in size. Terminal or intercalary chlamydospores are formed from the hyphae, as well as from the conidial cells. They are oval or spherical, thick-walled and usually occur in pairs. They measure 7.0 - 13.0 x 7.0 - 8.0µ in size (Fig. 71).

The fungus is a facultative parasite. It can invade the host mainly through wounds in the corms or roots. After entry, the fungus develops extensively in the vascular tissue of the corm and then proceeds systemically to the leaf sheaths and pseudostem through the vascular system. The fungus colonizes the vascular bundles and produces masses of mycelium, which bear conidia and chlamydospores, filling the cavity of the vessels. The plugging of vascular elements by the fungus obstructs the translocation of water and nutrients to the aboveground parts of the plant leading to wilting and death of affected plants.

Mode of survival, spread and epidemiology. The fungus is soil-borne in nature. It can survive saprophytically in the diseased corms and other plant parts for prolonged periods and cause fresh infection. The chlamydospores can also remain in a viable state in the soil and diseased plant parts for a long time. The disease can be easily spread through spores present in the infected banana trash and soil, which may be carried in surface flooded water. Suckers used for planting from diseased areas to other places spread the disease easily. Contact of the roots of healthy plants with the roots of diseased plants carrying the spores also leads to fresh infection. The entry of the pathogen is mostly through wounds in the roots or corms, especially deep wounds up to the xylem vessels, caused incidentally during cultural operations or by soil-inhabiting pests, particularly nematodes.

Light textured, sandy loam soils, with acid reaction and low soil moisture of 25 % favor the occurrence and development of the disease. Ratooning of infected banana plants increases the disease incidence to a great extent and leads to continuous accumulation of soil inoculum.

‘Fungi’ including ‘mushrooms’ are ‘Thallophytes’, which do not possess chlorophyll and have been classified under the Kingdom - Myceteae. They do not have stems, roots and leaves and they lack a vascular conducting system as in the case of plants. They propagate by means of spores, either asexual or sexual. Though almost all the fungi are microscopic, the mushrooms are among the largest fungi and had attracted the attention Scientists and Naturalists of many countries dating back to centuries. The Greek word ‘mykes’, which means ‘cap’, was given to the mushrooms because of the ‘cap-like’ appearance of the pileus and the Greek word ‘Mycology’ (mykes = mushroom + logos = discourse) denotes the study of mushrooms. What we call mushrooms, are actually the sporocarps produced by several species of fungi, while the mycelium that produces them live in various types of substrata and obtain nourishment from them. Usually, the fleshy, macroscopic fruiting bodies or sporocarps produced by fungi belonging to Basidiomycetes and Ascomycetes are called ‘mushrooms’

The Romans attributed the appearance of mushrooms and truffles to lightning hurled by Jupiter to the earth. Even now in India and several other countries, people believe that mushrooms appear only after lightning and thunder. The Greeks believed mushrooms as ‘Food for the Gods’. The Romans supplemented mushrooms in the food of soldiers for strength and vitality. The much-priced mushrooms were supposed to be the food delicacy of the elite society of the Romans and Greeks in olden days. The Chinese consider mushrooms as a cure for many diseases and they believe that mushrooms increase the longevity. A number of medicines in all forms are prepared from mushrooms by the Chinese.

Economics

The term “Economics” is derived from the Greek words ‘OIKOS’ and ‘NOMAS’ or ‘NEMEIN’. ‘Oikos’ means house hold and ‘Nomas’ or ‘Nemein’ means management. So in its original sense economics means house hold management; i.e. satisfying as many wants of the house hold or family as possible by allocating the limited resources at the disposal of the family wisely among different wants. In the modern and practical sense Economics means management of day to day problems arising from unlimited wants and limited resources by wisely allocating limited resources to satisfy maximum wants. In other words economics is the study of how man manages his limited resources as it satisfies as many wants as possible.

Goods and services are created through process of production. After production they have to be transferred or moved from the original producers to the final consumers. This involves the creation of market and the undertaking of number of activities such as buying, assembling, transportation warehousing, risk bearing, financing, selling etc. This constitutes the subject matter of marketing. Hence there is the need for the study of market.

What is market?

Market is derived from the Latin word “Marcatus” meaning trade, merchandise, ware, traffic or place of business. In the ordinary language, market is a place where buyers and sellers meet personally and make their purchases or sales. But in the language of economics, market need not be a place but it may be an area or region meant for potential exchange between a group of buyers and sellers interested in negotiating the terms of purchase and sale of goods and services and such negotiations may be done face to face at a certain place or may be done through other means of communication such as mail, phone, cable, television or through business middle men. What ever may be the means of communication there will be free exchange or perfect communication between buyers and sellers so that a fairly uniform price prevails for a particular commodity over the whole area at any given time.

Popularly the term management is used to refer to the group of managerial personnel of an enterprise. But the use of the term management in this sense is not correct, because the managerial personnel of an enterprise are usually designated as ‘managers’, ‘executives’ or administrators. Strictly speaking the term management refers to functional concept of management. Management refers to the sum total of all those functions or activities, which relate to the laying down of policies, plans and purposes, securing men, money, machinery needed for the achievement of the organisational objectives, putting all of them into operation and supervising and checking their performances in order to ensure the productive use of human and material resources for the maximum benefit or profit of the organisation, its employees and society in general.

Management is the sum total of five principal functions namely planning, organising, staffing, directing and controlling. The functional areas of management include: a) Financial management, b) Personnel management, c) material management, d) Production management, e) marketing management and f) Office management.

Book keeping is defined as;

1. The art of recording business transactions (pecuniary transactions) in a regulator and systematic manner.
2. Book keeping is the science and art of correctly recording in books of accounts all those business transactions that result in the transfer of money or money’s worth.
3. Book keeping is an art of recording day to day business transactions in a set of books in a most systematic manner.
4. It is the process of analysing, classifying and recording transaction in accordance with preconceived plan.

Statistics has originated as a science of statehood and found applications slowly and steadily in Agriculture, Economics, Commerce, Biology, Medicine, Industry, planning, education and so on. Sir Ronald A. Fisher, (1890 – 1962), who is called “the Father of Statistics”, drew many solid conclusions

• A mouse has three buttons on top and one trackball on the bottom, which

are used to select and move the mouse.

• A touchpad is provided as an alternative for the mouse on laptops, which

aids in mouse pointer movement.
