Abstract

The two most important tasks for a patentee to undertake after being granted a patent, in any patent regime, would be to pay the renewal fees necessary to keep the patent alive, and provide proof of having worked the patent in the jurisdiction. This article seeks to highlight features of India’s legal requirements with regard to the working of patents on a commercial scale. The number of patents granted in a country is an indicator of the technological strength of the country. However, it should be noted that actual technological growth depends upon the working of patents. Working of a patent means the commercial exploitation of the invention that is embodied in the patent.

Introduction

In the perspective of the accelerating national growth rate of 8% recorded at the end of the 10th Plan to a projected growth rate of 10% by the end of the 11th Plan, yielding an average GDP growth rate of about 9% it was appearing that the nation is going to have a strong footing of development. However, it could not be fully achieved due to several reasons including the global recession and other factors related to international economic setback which may deter achieving a projected growth rate of 10% in the 12th Plan. In consideration of the international scenario of growing complicacy in economic growth more emphasis should be given on further efficient utilization of natural resources and intellectual properties of grass root innovators to improve per capita income leading to a promising national structure of economics ensuring wide spread benefits to the society. In this regard, true development of a nation like India can be primarily realized by recognition of wide spread enthusiasm of its innovative human resources living in village and rural areas. It can be made possible only through working with them by appreciating their struggle for survival using all round innovative measures coming out of their daily life experiences and traditional knowledge. Technopreneur Promotion Programme (TePP) is a unique scheme of Government of India for development of society especially by promoting the intellectual properties of grass- root level innovators coming out from the society with a source of inspiration arising out of their daily life struggle for existence. In spite of its limited publicity in remote areas an awareness of this programme has often been found to raise great hope to the villagers to do something for their society exploring the ideas generated from the experiences of life with the help of local resources. Such naturally grown innovation can be found undoubtedly novel and the idea can change their world of dreaming for a more prosperous life by bringing changes in socioeconomic pattern of trade and employment in rural areas with proper support from Government if India through the scheme like TePP.

Human beings have been concerned about the concept of food safety since time immorial. Around the globe there has been major improvement in food safety management in the last twenty years. Looking into the progress made on the ways to make food safe and how to make them free from pathogens, this book, will explain food hygiene, the journey of research been taken in food safety till date and the challenges that we are going to face in future to ensure food safety and its wholesomeness. It also includes the role and responsibilities of the various sectors of society, namely governments, food industry, consumers and academia.

In the beginning of the twentieth century many modern food safety policies have been established. In the packing of meat and in food processing industries a lot of work has been done (Sinclair 1906). Another second generation policy includes the outbreak in the United States in early 1990s’ of pathogen E. coli O157:H7 and the BSE scandal of the late 1990s in the UK Lopman et al., (2003) have discussed on viral outbreak in europe. Currently, the crisis has come due to the economic and technological transformations which have taken place in food and the food supply system. As these changes have many health risks the public is very concerned. Therefore, the control forms of safety regulation and food safety laws have come into the picture. These policies include continuous line inspection, visual product inspection and detailed specification of approved hygiene practices. There is a need of a public health-focused policy which works towards the preventive integrated management of foodborne hazards from farm to table. This includes the use of modern science based risk management tools which will increase the efficiency accurately towards public health. A lot needs to be worked out for better implications. Current efforts to modernize food safety policy around the world are being worked out by the use of risk analysis and cost-benefit analysis in public administration and also the quality management in industry. The role of public economics plays an important role in food safety policies. For the social benefits the policy makers need to take decision on the costs and strengthening of the risk assessment. Today there are globalized markets and this can influence the health globally. Emerging economies like China are industrializing and urbanizing rapidly like that of Europe and North America.

Food safety scientifically describes various methods of handling, preparation and storage of food to prevent any foodborne illnesses. However, it is important to check the safety between industry, market and the consumer. From the food industry to the market the practices relating to food labeling, food hygiene, food additives and pesticide residues are important to be looked into and the policies on biotechnology. The governmental imports and exports needs to be given proper guidelines. Certification systems and Inspection for foods need to be installed which should be clean and corruption free. When all this is properly considered the food could be safe in the market. This may allow for safe delivery and safe preparation of the food for the consumers. Many diseases are transmitted by food which serves as a growth medium for bacteria and cause food poisoning. In the developed countries it has been observed that there are many intricate standards for food preparation. However, in the developing countries the availability of adequate safe water itself is a question. It is possible to prevent food poisoning to 100%. An ordinance and code regulation in US (1943)was given.

Supply chain management encompasses the planning and management of all activities involved in sourcing and procurement, conversion and all logistics management activities. Importantly, it also includes coordination and collaboration with channel partners, which can be suppliers, intermediaries, third party service providers, and customers. In essence, supply chain management integrates supply and demand management within and across companies.

Crop physiology is the study of the ways in which plant physiological processes are integrated to cause whole plant responses in communities. The subject matter of crop physiology includes the ways in which the knowledge of plant physiology is applied for better management of crops.

Genetic potential of a plant and its interaction with environmental factors decides its growth and development by influencing or modifying certain internal processes. Plant physiology studies about these internal processes and their functional aspects. It helps to understand various biological processes of the plants like photosynthesis, respiration, transpiration, translocation, nutrient uptake, plant growth regulation through hormones and such other processes which have profound impact on crop yield. Many aspects of Agriculture can benefit from more intensive research in plant physiology to provide practical solutions in agriculture. Understanding the physiological aspects of seed germination, seedling growth, crop establishment, vegetative development, flowering, fruit and seed setting and crop maturity provides a reasonable scientific base for effective monitoring and beneficial manipulation of these phenomenon’s. Studying this phenomenon with a view to develop better crop management practices forms the subject matter of crop physiology. Later on several research works were carried out to understand the processes like translocation of food materials, their partitioning towards economic yield, storage mechanisms, physiology of flowering, effect of stressful environmental factors on crop growth and development, role of plant growth regulators in increasing the crop productivity etc. All these areas have enriched the knowledge of physiological processes and their role in deciding the crop yield. Crop physiology covers different topics such as seed germination and proper establishment of seedling depends upon various internal and external factors. Knowledge in seed physiology helps in understanding of different physiological and morphological changes that occur during germination. Any deviation in these processes causes seed dormancy. The dormant condition of the seed, bars immediate use of harvested seed for next crop which is important in intensive agriculture. By understanding the causes and effects of this problem, crop physiologists have come up with different methods of breaking the seed dormancy. Nutriophysiology is yet another important area to understand crop physiology. For the healthy growth of a crop, around 16 essential elements are required. Knowledge of nutriophysiology has helped in identification of essential nutrients, ion uptake mechanisms, their deficiency symptoms and corrective measures. It also helps to check the toxicity symptoms of various nutrients.

Stomata are pores formed between two specialized epidermal cells, the guard cells, which are found on the surface of aerial parts of higher plants (leaves). They control the gas exchange between the leaf and the ambient air. Their main functions is to facilitate the entry of CO² into the leaf for photosynthesis and loss of water vapour for evaporative cooling of the leaves.

The guard cells are formed by the transverse division of stomatal mother cells that differ morphologically and biochemically from other epidermal cells. The middle lamella disintegrates and the two walls separate leaving an opening between them the stomatal pore. The walls bordering the pore become considerably thickened. They are generally cutinised. This radial thickening of the inner wall plays an important role in stomatal movement. Stomata control 95 per cent or more of CO² and water vapour exchange between the leaf and atmosphere.

Location and occurrence of stomata: Stomata are found in all higher plants down to the evolutionary level of the phylum Bryophyta. Stomata are not found in liverworts. In the leaves of most herbaceous plants the stomata are found in both upper (Adaxial) and the lower (Abaxial) surfaces. Such leaves are known as Amphistomatus. Usually in tree species, stomata are found only on the lower surface of the leaves. Such leaves are called Hypostomatus. Aquatic plants with floating leaves such as water lilies have stomata only on the upper surface and such leaves are called Epistomatus. Most of submerged aquatic plants do not posses stomata and diffusion of gases occurs between water and plant tissues across a thin cuticle. In many cases subsidiary cells are present adjacent to the guard cells. These are specialized epidermal cells which are usually different in size and shape from other epidermal cells. They are usually smaller than the epidermal cells and have more dense cytoplasmic contents and a greater frequency of cell organelles. In grasses and some other species, subsidiary cells are intimately involved in stomatal mechanism.

Diffusion of gases through stomata is governed by the two important parameters associated with the stomata, viz., the stomatal frequency and the extent of opening of the stomata. Stomatal frequency is defined as the number of stomata per unit leaf area (no.mm ^-2 ). Apart from the stomatal frequency, yet another parameter that reflects the stomatal distribution is the stomatal Index. It is the ratio of the number of stomata per unit leaf area to the total number of epidermal cells and is generally expressed in percentage.

Transpiration is the loss of water through areal parts of the plants particularly leaves in the form of water vapour and 95% of the transpiration is through stomata and the rest from cuticle and the lensi cells.

Transpiration can be measured in several ways. The most commonly used technique as the whole plant level is the gravimetric technique where in the amount of water loss through transpiration is measured of monitoring the amount of water added by measuring the loss in weight. Another method is the direct measurement using equipments specially designed for this purpose, which steadily include porometers. Transpiration is also being measured using the portable photosynthesis systems. In the laboratory transpiration rate can be measured using a very simple technique as follows,

During photochemical reactions of photosynthesis, takings place in the chloroplast lamellas system, electrons flow from water to NADP resulting in generation of a powerful reductant NADPH. Simultaneously, water is oxidised and O₂ oxygen is released. This reaction is known as Hills reaction. The rate of production of NADPH and ATP in the photochemical reaction is directly associated with the oxidation of water the sole electron donor. So the photochemical efficiency can be measured by measuring the rate of oxygen evolution.

Since oxygen evolution is a good reflection of the photochemical activity of chloroplast, determination of the rate of oxygen evolution can be conveniently adopted to estimate the photochemical activities. Normally oxygen evolution as a measure of photochemical reactions, is measured either in isolated chloroplasts or in the excised leaf discs using an oxygen electrode. An oxygen electrode is a special form of chemical electrode cell in which the current generated is proportional to the activity of oxygen present. This equipment is widely used for determining the amount of oxygen liberated during the photochemical reaction either in isolated chloroplasts or in leaf bits. Though oxygen electrode is the most frequently used technique to determine the rate of oxygen evolution, there are a few indirect methods to quantify the amount of oxygen evolved.

In photosynthesising tissues or in isolated chloroplasts, the rate of oxygen liberation can be determined by using appropriate artificial electron acceptors and donors (artificial electron donor and acceptors are compounds which can substitute the physiological electron transport carriers and helps in understanding the electron transport mechanisms and ATP synthesis). Oxygen is a powerful oxidizing agent which means it readily oxidizes another compound and itself gets reduced to water. This property can be effectively used in qualitative and quantitative determination of oxygen evolution in green leaves exposed to light. The oxygen that is liberated during the photochemical reactions can be determined by using an appropriate organic substance which can be readily oxidized by oxygen.

Tsunami (2004), that struck the Tamil Nadu coast has left deep marks in the minds of the affected society. The interview conducted in the coastal villages of the tsunami affected Nagapattinam has brought out many salient societal issues like, loss of leadership, widow hood, debt grip, psychological depression etc, which warrant deeper look to bring them out from the syndrome.

INTRODUCTION

The damages caused by tsunami (2004) along the coastlines of most of the South Asian countries are indelible not only from the minds of the coastal population but also from the heart of the entire humanity. The worst affected in the disaster are the fishing community. Many of their mechanized and un-mechanized boats and catamarans were converted to useless debris and garbages by the heartless tsunami. When their settlements themselves were swallowed even with out chewing, nothing to talk about their fishing nets which were just blown off by the ferocious tsunami. In addition, the infrastructure facilities like roads, communication systems, water and power supply were also incalculably damaged. Next to fishermen community, the affected souls were the farmers whose cultivable lands were turned into marine wet lands with swimming and tossing fishes. The Indian subcontinent was facing such onslaughts of various natural disasters periodically but our morale always stood by our side prohibiting us declaring them as national calamities for getting international aids. Specifically in this case, the central and state governments, NGOs and Voluntary Organizations have risen phenomenally to help the affected who were in need. Despite best efforts taken to provide relief and rehabilitation to the affected people, the tsunami has seedled some societal issues / syndrome, which may take long years to settle; it may not settle too. The paper discusses some of such issues gulled out through the interview conducted amongst various cross sections of the affected community.

Eastern India is frequently affected by weather hazards, such as drought, flood and heat wave. The region consists of Orissa, West Bengal, and Bihar. The coastal states of Orissa and West Bengal frequently face cyclones, while Bihar and eastern U.P. face cold wave. Due to unfavorable seasonal weather, crop productivity is poor. However, the recent change in climate induced by global warming has further threatened the agricultural productivity in the region. Rice is the principal crop of Eastern India and rice based cropping systems has long been practiced in the region. While rice-rice is the most dominant cropping system in Orissa and West Bengal, rice-wheat is in Bihar and eastern U.P. Besides, rice-groundnut occupies a considerable area in the region. It is now doubtful whether the resilience of these cropping systems would continue sustaining the productivity under the climate change. The major aim of the proposal was to identify suitable adaptation measures of crop production under projected climate change. Climate change is expected to alter precipitation pattern, increase temperature, change in humidity level and decrease sunshine. As a result it is like to influence right from land preparation to the harvest and post harvest process. Thus the project aim was to revisiting the existing package of practices of selected cropping systems by simulation modelling, deduce suitable adaptation measures and validate these by OTC experiments.

Generation system of seed multiplication is nothing but the production of a particular class of seed from specific class of seed up to certified seed stage. The choice of a proper seed multiplication model is the key to further success of a seed programme. This basically depends upon,

• Seed multiplication ratio
• Total seed demand (Seed replacement rate)

Harvesting is one of the agronomic management practices that require technical knowledge on maturation of the crops. This knowledge is much important in seed production than in commercial production.

Physiological maturation

• It is the stage of accumulation of maximum dry matter within the seeds. The moisture content of the seed at this stage will be in decreasing order (25-30%) and is expressed with maximum dry weigh of seed, germination and vigour potential. The physiological maturation is represented for individual seed and this maturation will not be the same for the population, due to differential flowering habit.
• The attainment of physiological maturation is represented by sigmoid curve of growth pattern. The physiological maturation can be represented both as duration and visible symptoms.

There are broadly five categories of crop protection products

Insecticides: Insecticides provide protection to the crops from the insects by either killing them or by preventing their attack. They can be further classified based on their mode of action:

The Insecticides Act, 1968 and Insecticides Rules, 1971 regulate the import, registration process, manufacture, sale, transport, distribution and use of pesticides with a view to prevent risk to human beings or animals and for all connected matters, throughout India. However, recently the Union Cabinet gave its approval for the introduction of the Pesticides Management Bill with the aims of improving the quality of pesticides available to Indian farmers and introducing new, safe and efficacious pesticides. This bill will replace the existing Insecticide Act 1968.The pesticides’ regulations in India are governed by two different bodies:

Tank mixing two or more pesticides saves time and labor and reduces equipment and application costs. In some cases, however, it can alter the effectiveness of one or more of the products. Two or more pesticides are considered compatible when they can be mixed and applied in combination without adversely affecting the effectiveness or the physical and chemical properties of the mixture, or causing undesirable damage to the application site. When problems develop from mixing two or more products together, the chemicals are considered incompatible.

Incompatibility

Incompatibility is a condition that prevents pesticides from mixing together properly to form a uniform solution or suspension. The formation of flakes, crystals, or oily clumps, or severe separation is unacceptable. Such incompatible mixtures clog application equipment and limit even distribution of the active ingredient in the spray tank. This prevents good pesticide coverage. The cause of incompatibility may be the chemical nature of the materials you are mixing. Impurities in the spray tank or water also may affect compatibility. Even the order in which you mix pesticides in the spray tank is important. Sometimes the types of formulations being mixed influence compatibility. Pesticide formulations of the same type are rarely incompatible with one another because they usually contain many of the same inert ingredients and solvents. Incompatibility can be a matter of timing or placement of the pesticides. Chemical or physical incompatibility may occur between the pesticides.

Pesticide Resistance

Resistance to pesticides may be defined as ‘a heritable change in the sensitivity of a pest population that is reflected in the repeated failure of a product to achieve the expected level of control when used according to the label recommendation for that pest species.

The pesticides-one amongst the most important inputs in the crop production contributed a lot to minimize the losses to crop yield. In India, on an average, 33 % of crop loss occurs due to pests and disease and runs to an estimated Rs 1.40000 crore. Pesticide is an essential in the farmers struggle to protect their crops. Pesticides consumption in India reported to 288g/ha is very low compared to global average of 900g/ha. Excessive, irrational and indiscriminate use of these pesticides causes many negative consequences, mainly the famous 3 R viz; Resistance, Resurgence and Residue aspects.

Definition

Adjuvants are chemicals incorporated in a pesticide formulation or added to the tank mix, to increase effectiveness and safety. They generally have no effect on pests in themselves.

Strobilurins are a group of chemical compounds used in agriculture as fungicides. They are part of the larger group of QoI inhibitors, which act to inhibit the respiratory chain at the level of Complex III.Some common Strobilurins are azoxystrobin, kresoxim-methyl, picoxystrobin, fluoxastrobin,oryzastrobin, dimoxystrobin, pyraclostrobin and trifloxystrobin. Strobilurins represented a major development in fungus-based fungicides. They were extracted from the fungus Strobilurus tenacellus. They have a suppressive effect on other fungi, reducing competition for nutrients; theyinhibit electron transfer inmitochondria,disrupting energy metabolism and preventing growth of the target fungi. Strobilurins are miracle fungicides ever developed with novel mode of action & mobility that qualifies the Unique New Generation Fungicides controlling Pathogen from diverse class.

Pesticide Toxicity

Chemical tactics to manage pests can include many types of compounds. Some merely repel or confuse pests. Some interfere with weed photosynthesis, insect molting processes or development in some way. Others, including some botanical and most conventional insecticides are broadly toxic to living systems. The term pesticide literally means “pest killer". Generally speaking, when using pesticides, we are trying to garner the advantages of using pesticides while minimizing the risk to humans and other non-target organisms. Risk to humans of pesticide use is often described as:

1. Bordeaux Mixture

It was invented in the Bordeaux region of France by PM Millardet (1982).

Also called Bordo Mix.

Mixture of Copper sulfate (CuSO₄), Slaked lime and Water.

It is known locally in France as Bouillie Bordelaise.

The behavior of pesticides is dependent on many factors, so be sure to consider everything from light and temperature to moisture and pH and recognize that all the factors will impact the active ingredient. Here is some information on these topics, and others, which will improve pest management success.

1.Identification: The first step to disease and pest management success is the proper identification of the insect, disease or weed pest. Without identification of the pest, controls may be misused or improperly timed.

2.Time of Application: Time of application of pesticides plays major role in optimizing pesticidal performance. Early morning or late afternoon are the best times to spray. Dust formulations should be apply in early morning hours (6 am).In the case of foliar spray, it should be done in morning hours between 8 am to 11 am. Avoid spraying during the heat of the day.

3.Water Quality and pH: Primary factors important in water quality are pH and alkalinity (bicarbonates). Most of the pesticides show high efficiency in slightly acidic to slightly basic water pH (i.e. 6.5 to 7.5). Many water sources in alkaline pH (<7.0). Alkali pH (7.5>) is always harmful for pesticides. High pH levels are responsible for alkaline hydrolysis, a process that breaks down the active ingredient in many insecticides, fungicides and herbicides.Add a buffer agent to lower spray solution to a pH of 5.5-6.5. This will give better initial knockdown and longer residual action.

Sprayer is an equipment in which the spray fluid is broken up into fine droplets and ejected under pressure. Actually, the function of the sprayer is to provide the spray fluid with some energy so that it can be broken into fine droplets through the nozzle and propelled to the target. The energy can be produced manually or with the help of any other source of power. There are a variety of sprayers.

Type of Sprayers: There are a variety of sprayers.

Pesticide Dusting

The dusting powders are low concentration ready to use type, dry formulations containing 2 to 10% pesticide. The inert material or dry diluents is talc, soapstone, attapulgite, etc. and it is non toxic. The sulphur dust is not diluted with inert material.

Majority of the pesticides are applied as sprays. The liquid formulations of pesticide either diluted or directly are applied in small drops to the crop by different types of sprayers. Generally the wettable powder, EC formulations are diluted suitably with water which is a common carrier of pesticides. However, in few cases oil is used as carrier of pesticides.

Any sprayer nozzle essentially breaks the liquid into small droplets and throws them. All nozzles in the field produce rangesof droplets of different size called spray spectrum. The hydraulic nozzles have wide range of size of droplets whereas the rotary nozzles have narrow range. Adroplet of 400 µm diameter is 1000 times bigger in volume than a droplet of 40 µm. The volume of spherical droplets can be worked out as 4/3 µr3. So if the droplet size of aspraying system could be reduced to half, then there will be 8 fold increases in the number of droplets and the coverage will also increase.

i) Common Maintenance

Clean outer surface with brush or cotton waste by using plenty of water or kerosene oil.

Oil the moving or rubbing surfaces of parts with lubricating oil or grease.

Filter the chemical solution/ fuel oil mixture while pouring into the tanks. Make the caps or lids leak-proof with gaskets.

Flush the equipment with clean water to wash inside parts of containers, tubes and nozzles to be free from chemicals.

The objective of correct pesticide application cannot be achieved without good quality Plant Protection Equipment. A sound designed machine shall be proficient as far as pesticide distribution and delivery to the target in minimum time with least wastages is concerned. Hence, the machines should be tested to ascertain that they are:

A. Purchase

a)Do not purchase leaking containers, loose, unsealed or torn bags.

b)Do not purchase pesticides without proper/approved labels.

c)Purchase only just required quantity e.g. 100, 250, 500 or 1000 g/ml for single application in specified area.

Control Tips

Practicing Integrated Pest Management can significantly reduce the amount of insecticides needed to control many insect problems.

Broad-spectrum insecticides are effective against all insects, even the good ones. Other insecticides target certain insects. Using a targeted insecticide minimizes the risk to beneficial or non-target insects.

Some insecticides work immediately to kill insects while others may need some time to take effect.

Using more than one insecticide product in the same location can increase or decrease each one’s effectiveness. It may also result in a greater risk to health and/or the environment.

Insect growth regulators like pyriproxyfen and methoprene do not kill insects; they make it impossible for exposed insects to molt (grow) or lay eggs properly.

Insecticidal baits can be used instead of spraying large areas, especially for social insects like ants. This can decrease the risk of exposure, but remember to place baits where children and pets won’t have access.

Vegetables constitute a significant source of carotenoids, phenolics, vitamin C, flavonoids and glucosinolates which boost the immune mechanism and have medicinal properties. The antioxidants in tomato, onions, carrots, garlic, brussel sprouts, peppers and green leafy vegetables and their potential health benefits are critically discussed.

Oxidative damage to biological molecules like DNA, protein and lipids induced by free radicals is considered to be linked with many degenerative diseases such as cardiovascular, cancer, ocular and neurological such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s. Antioxidants from plant sources preserve an adequate function of immune cells against homeostatic disturbances and act as functional foods. Functional foods are foods which besides fulfilling the basic physiological function, have health promoting effect. There is a considerable epidemiological evidence indicating association between diets rich in vegetables and a decreased risk of cardiovascular disease and certain forms of cancer. Diets rich in fruits and vegetables contain high amounts of antioxidant compounds like vitamin C, vitamin E, carotenoids, flavonoids, tannins and other phenolic constituents which boost the immune mechanism.

Introduction

The incidence of diabetes mellitus is increasing all over the world and is becoming a problem of significant importance. Diabetes mellitus is a disease of CHO metabolism and WHO has declared India as the diabetic capital of the world. Globally diabetes affects 246 million people, which is about 6% of the total adult population. It is the fourth leading cause of death by disease and every 10 seconds, a person dies from diabetes related causes in the world.

The growing number of diabetic patients and the current and probable future need for health care constraints will mean that high quality diabetic care will become increasingly difficult to be delivered in the future. This requires identification & implementation of cost effective treatment measures that will improve diabetes care in the long term, decrease the associated morbidity and reduce the high direct and indirect costs of its management. This can be possible by incorporation of cost effective and efficient medicinal plants in the management of diabetes. Toxicity and side effects of modern system of medicine have highlighted the importance and relevance of traditional medicinal plants. India has about 45,000 plant species and several thousands have been claimed to possess medicinal properties. Among Indian traditional medicinal plants several potential anti-diabetic plants and herbs are being used as part of our diet since prehistoric time.

In India, medicinal plants have been used as natural medicine since the days of Vedic glory. Historically, in ‘Atharva-Veda’ (about 200 B.C.) description of medicinal plants was made under a separate chapter ‘Ayurveda’. The medicinal values of plants have been tested by trial and error method for a long time by different workers and opened great opportunities for scientific investigations of herbal medicines for cure of diabetes and its complications.

Medicinal plants used to treat hyperglycemic conditions are of considerable interest for ethno-botanical community as they are recognized to contain valuable medicinal properties in different parts of the plant and a number of plants have shown varying degree of hypoglycemic and anti-hyperglycemic activity. The active principles of many plant species are isolated for direct use as drugs, lead compounds or pharmacological agents. Traditional plant medicines or herbal formulations might offer a natural key to unlock diabetic complications if utilized with care.

Introduction

Functional food is a natural or processed food that contains biologically active compounds like nutraceauticals and phytochemicals which have health benefit and thus, an important source in the prevention, management and treatment of chronic diseases. For centuries consumption of fruits and vegetables has been attributed to beneficial health effects. Research studies stated that approximately one-third of cancer risk in humans could be attributed to diet. Free radical formation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and subsequent oxidative stress have been correlated to many human disorders including those of the kidney, eye, lung, liver, nervous system, heart and cardiovascular system. Therefore, foods in our diet that can aid in prevention of these diseases are of major interest to both the scientific community and the general public. Biologically active plant chemicals including traditional nutrients have a beneficial effect on human health. Onion and garlic have received considerable attention for their healthful, functional benefits.

Onion and garlic are the most important vegetable crops grown and consumed almost all over the country. Both the crops belong to the family Alliaceae and have gained the importance of a cash crop in recent years. Maharashtra, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Rajasthan, Andhra Pradesh and Odisha are the major onion growing states whereas Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh and Odisha are the major garlic growing states. India is a leading producer of onion supporting 20.2% of the world production. Onion is grown in kharif, late kharif and rabi seasons whereas, garlic is grown in rabi season only except in Nilgiri Hills where summer crop is also taken. Onion is normally produced from seeds except multiplier onions where production is taken up vegetatively from bulblets. Garlic is produced vegetatively by planting cloves. Both the crops are rich source of bioactive compounds and have outstanding nutritive value. The nutritive value (per 100g edible portion) of onion and garlic are as follows.

The term “nutraceutical” was coined from “nutrition” and “pharmaceutical” in 1989 by Stephen DeFelice, MD, founder and chairman of the Foundation for Innovation in Medicine (FIM), Cranford, NJ. According to DeFelice, nutraceutical can be defined as, “a food (or part of a food) that provides medical or health benefits, including the prevention and/or treatment of a disease”. In other words, nutraceuticals are chemical or natural feed ingredients which may enhance health by providing a physiological benefit by the provision of basic nutrients. Enzymes, prebiotics, probiotics, yeast and fungal extracts, predigested hydrolyzed carbohydrates and fats, phytogenic additives, acids etc are included in nutraceuticals. However, the term nutraceutical as commonly used in marketing has no regulatory definition.

1.1. Introduction

The green revolution has led our nation from the state of deficiency to the state of self-sufficiency in food production. The grain production has increased substantially from around 50 million tonnes to about 220 million tonnes per annum. As per the latest estimates, annual fruit production is 44 million tonnes from an area of 3.72million hectares.

Depletion of nutrients, from the soil is steadily increasing due to the adoption of modem agricultural technology through intensive and extensive cultivation of high yielding varieties with chemically pure, micronutrients free high analysis fertilizers. So in recent years, the potentiality of many crops could not be exploited owing to the widespread nutrient deficiency observed in many parts of our country. With nutrient removals by crops exceeding the additions, there exists a perpetual negative balance. Consequently, nutrient deficiencies have multiplied in Indian soils and crops.

Diagnosis is the art of recognizing diseases or deficiency symptoms manifested from their symptoms, a scientific determination of a disorder based on critical scrutiny.

2.1 Diagnosis and prognosis

Diagnosis is the estimation of nutritional status of a plant during sampling, while prognosis is the prediction of possibility of deficiency impairing plant growth at stages in the growth cycle after the sample is taken. Diagnosis is based on comparison of nutrient concentration in plant parts (mainly leaves) with standard values related to physiological requirements of the plants. In diagnosis, mainly plant analysis is used. Prognosis is also based on critical concentration of same plant parts. This sometimes has led to confusion between these two concepts, which have been used with the same meaning. In contrast, to diagnosis, prognosis may be based on their leaf or soil analysis. The main difference between prognosis and diagnosis lies in the time between sampling and appearance of the influence on plant growth.

India is a second largest producer of fruits and vegetables after China. These share are 10% and 16% respectively in total world production. Horticulture crops occupy 23.548 million ha and production is estimated around 260.063 million tones. Total area of fruits, vegetable, plantation crops, spices, loose flower and aromatic plant are 7012, 9083, 3606, 3092, 218 and 537 thousand ha, respectively and production are 79400, 156445, 16388, 5786, 1421 and 622 thousand tones, respectively with productivity are11.32, 17.22, 4.54, 1.87, 6.59, 1.19 thousand tones per ha, respectively (2012-2013). The total productions of cut flowers are 74305 Lakh stem (2012-2013). The annual horticulture export volume is 2733145 metric tonnes (2010-2011) with total exported value of Rs 696461 lakh. In terms of volume, fresh fruits & vegetables comprised about 76 % of exported horticulture produce followed by processed fruits & vegetables (23 %) and floriculture & seeds (1%). After that losses found 20-30 % in fruit and 30-40 % in vegetable while harvesting to consumption in India. It’s due to the perishable nature of horticulture commodity, non availability of appropriate post harvest infrastructure transportation, inadequacy of the market or lack of processing.

India is a major horticulture producer, even though processing is less than 2 %. This is very low as compare to 80 % of Malaysia, 78 % of Philippine, 70 % of Brazil and 30 % of Thailand. The most of developed country 40-60 % fruits and vegetables utilize in processing.

Proper handling, packaging, transportation and storage reduce the post harvest losses of fruits and vegetables. For every one percent reduction in loss will save 5 million tons of fruit and vegetable per year. Processing and preservation technology helps to save excess fruit and vegetable during the glut season. The technology has become a necessity to improve the food safety and strengthen nations food security. The technology helps to boost export of agricultural commodities in the form of preserved and value added products.

Ethylene (C₂H₄ also known as ethene) is a gaseous organic compound that is the simplest of the alkenes chemical structures (alkenes contain a carbon-carbon double bond). The hormone effects of ethylene on general plant growth were first noted in 1864 when leakage from gas street lighting systems caused stunting and deformation of nearby plants. In 1901 Neljubow identified the active component of the gas to be ethylene but it was not until 1934 that Gane identified that plants could synthesize ethylene and in 1935 Crocker proposed ethylene to be the hormone responsible for fruit ripening and senescence of vegetative tissues.

Ethylene play important role in many plant during development processes, including seed germination, vegetative growth, leaf abscission, flowering, senescence and fruit ripening. Ethylene also plays a role in response to water stress, chilling and mechanical injury.

Preserves (Murabbas) are prepared from whole fruits and vegetables or their segments by addition of sugar followed by evaporation to a point where microbial spoilage cannot occur. The final soluble solids concentration is reached to about 70 per cent. The finished product can be stored with or without hermetic sealing and refrigeration.

Purpose- Burnt porous clay or cement or plastic pots are commonly used for various purposes in horticulture. The pots are used in propagation or plants, cultivation of ornamental plants and flowering annuals. Growing of plants in pots in referred as pot-culture. In pot-culture, operations such as potting, shifting and filling of pots are very important. Potting refers to planting of plants in pots containing soil mixture, while shifting means removal of plants from pots and planting them again in the same or different pot. Plants growing for more than one year in the same pot need shifting. The time for potting and shifting of plants is monsoon season (July to Sept.) and during spring (Feb-March).

Materials and Equipments-Flower pots, crocks (broken pieces of pots), potting mixture, khurpi and watering can (with fine nozzle).

Purpose-There are several planting plans or systems which can be adopted for planting orchard. The following points need to be considered before choosing any system of planting.

1. It should accommodate maximum number of plants per unit area.
2. It should allow sufficient space for the development of each tree.
3. Orchard operation such as ploughing, dusting are easy to perform.

Purpose: Layering includes several forms of ground and aerial layering (goottie). When rooting is encouraged on the aerial part of a plant after wounding it is known as air layering or goottie or morcottage. When branches running parallel to ground are utilized, then the method is known as ground layering. Layering is the development of root on a stem while it is still attached to the mother plant. The root formation on the stem is stimulated by removing a ring of bark or by making a notch which cause an interruption in the downward movement of carbohydrates and auxins from the leaves and growing shoot tips. The materials accumulate near the points of treatment and helps in rooting. Root formation depends upon continuous moisture supply, good aeration and moderate temperature around the rooting zone. For the same reason the best result are obtained by these methods during monsoon month (July-Sept.) and spring (Feb. -March) from branches 1 to 2 years of age.

MAJOR INSECT-PEST OF MANGO

1. Mango hopper (Idioscopus atkinsani, I. niveosparsus, I. clypealis)

This is one of the most serious pests of mango. They are small greenish wedge-shaped insect. They cause serious damage to the crop at the time of flowering and fruiting. Both adult and nymphs suck sap from the tender plant parts, inflorescence, young shoots and panicles. They excrete sugary shirring substance on which shooty moulds develops. Cloudy and humid weather are favourable for their development.
