Post-mortem (PM) examination
The core objective of post-mortem examination is to identify and eradicate defects and contaminations and thus, confirming that only meat suitable for ingestion are allowed to be passed
Facilities for post-mortem inspection
• Normal infrastructure amenities which delivers comfortable working environment and assist in presenting the carcases and its offals for PM examination
• Every inspection place on the dressing over-head line must have lights of -- 540 lux (50 foot-candle) intensity light which does not alter the normal colours
• Adequate facility for sanitising the hands, equipments and aprons should be provided
• To sterilise the knives, cleavers and saws–a water bath operating at 82 ºC
• Head, viscera and carcase are the three major inspection parts
• On moving rails, viscera from a particular animal should move little ahead of its carcase so that any abnormality in viscera could be conveyed to the carcase examiner well in time
• For precise recognition of carcases and its correlated viscera from an animal, the lines conveying the carcases and viscera should move in synchronized way
• When a carcase is declared unfit for human consumption, all its the related parts such as head, viscera, blood and hide must be collected and disposed off
• Every inspection point must have a easily accessible overhead rail line stop button

Introduction
• Meat inspection involves proper veterinary examination of live food animals prior to slaughter (called ante-mortem examination), inspection of carcases and offals and pathological examinations where deemed fit
• Full ante-mortem inspection represents 50% of meat inspection
• Ante-mortem inspection is particularly useful for detecting scheduled or infectious diseases which are communicable to man e.g. anthrax, rabies and glanders
• Diseases where animals show nervous symptoms like tetanus, tuberculous meningitis, sturdy in sheep, lysteriosis, rabies, cysticosis etc. and where skin lesions are manifested such as food and mouth disease, swine fever etc. are easily detected during ante-mortem inspection which are difficult to be detected in post-mortem inspection
• Animals must undergo veterinary ante-mortem inspection on the day of their arrival at the slaughterhouse or before the beginning of daily slaughtering
The inspection must determine
1. Whether the animals are suffering from a disease which is communicableto man and to animals or whether they show symptoms
2. Whether they show symptoms of disease or of a disorder of their general condition which is likely to make their meat unfit for human consumption-- any medicine/substances
3. Whether they are tired, agitated or injured
4. Whether they are sufficiently clean to enter the normal slaughter protocol
• For public health purposes, the veterinarian must separate normal animals from those which may be suffering from a potentially zoonotic disease or present a hygiene risk to the slaughter hall environment owing to the soiled condition of their hide/fleece

Introduction
Respiratory diseases are a common clinical issue in dogs, particularly in those housed in environments like pet shops, shelters, breeding and boarding kennels. Puppies and senior dogs are at a higher risk of developing respiratory infections compared to adult dogs. The respiratory system is one of the body’s four major systems, comprising the upper airways (pharynx, larynx, and trachea and the lower airways (bronchi, bronchioles, and
alveoli). The pharynx, which serves as a common passageway for both the respiratory and gastrointestinal systems, explains the relatively high incidence of aspiration pneumonia. The luminal diameter of the pharynx is the widest, followed by the larynx and trachea.
The ratio of tracheal diameter to thoracic inlet height (TD:TI) remains relatively constant, regardless of the animal’s size or respiratory phase. The respiratory tract is typically protected from harmful pathogens by physical, chemical, and immunologicbarriers, including mucus, mucociliary clearance, innate antimicrobial factors, alveolar macrophages, and the pulmonary immune response. The entire respiratory tree is lined with ciliated epithelial cells, except for the bronchioles, which are lined by non-ciliated granular secretory cells known as club cells. The respiratory system’s primary function is achieved through four major processes: pulmonary ventilation; diffusion of oxygen and carbon dioxide between the alveoli and the blood; transport of these gases in the blood and body fluids to and from the body’s tissue cells; and regulation of ventilation and other respiratory factors. The pulmonary alveoli, the main sites for gas exchange between air and blood, are highly vulnerable to injury if the body’s defense mechanisms are compromised, underscoring the importance of prompt emergency treatment for respiratory diseases

Introduction: Relation between transportation and meat quality
One of the fundamental aims of animal production system is to ensure better quality meat. Apart from various animal husbandry practices that affect the meat quality, the transportation of meat animals from farm to slaughterhouse and their handling at lairage, affect the meat quality greatly. For better meat quality, the pH of the meat should fall from normal pH 7.0 - 7.2 in live animal to pH 5.5 (ultimate pH) after slaughter at the onset of rigor-mortis. The low muscle pH is required to inhibit the microbial growth and meat tenderization (cathepsins system is activated at low pH). The ultimate muscle pH is achieved through the accumulation of lactic acid which is produced as a result of anaerobic glycolysis of glycogen. After slaughter, as the oxygen supply to muscle ceases, ATP is generated through anaerobic glycolysis of glycogen and in this process lactic acid is produced. ATP is required to keep the muscle in relaxed stage. This anaerobic glycolysis carries on till the glycogen reserve is exhausted. So, higher the glycogen reserve at the time of slaughter, longer the length of time duration of anaerobic glycolysis and higher the quantity of lactic acid production and greater the reduction of muscle pH. Hence, livestock should be transported and handled before slaughter carefully because stress during transit and in lairage could severely deplete the glycogen reserve of livestock.

The induction of behavioristic
reactions—also referred to as sex drive or mating instincts—and the provision of a means of transportation for spermatozoa, as well as the regulation of ejaculate—either its release into the aquatic medium surrounding the egg in the case of lower vertebrates or its introduction into female passages through an organ of intromission—are the two concrete necessities involved. The animal loses its ability to reproduce as long as either the production of germ cells or the propensity to mate is impaired, even though the two processes undoubtedly work in tandem to achieve the end result.

Introduction
The haematological system, essential for sustaining life and comprising blood and its components, is fundamental to human and animal physiology. Blood is a unique connective tissue that performs several critical functions, including transporting oxygen, nutrients, and hormones to cells and removing metabolic wastes. It also plays a pivotal role in immune response, haemostasis, and the regulation of body temperature and pH. This
section provides an in-depth overview of the clinical physiology of the haematological system, covering the composition of blood, haematopoiesis, haemostasis, and common haematological disorders. Blood is composed of two main elements: plasma and blood cells. Plasma, the liquid component, constitutes approximately 55% of blood volume and consists predominantly of water, electrolytes, proteins, waste products, and dissolved gases. Plasma is the medium for transporting nutrients, gases, hormones, and waste products throughout the body. It contains important proteins such as albumin, which maintains osmotic pressure; globulins, which are involved in immune responses; and fibrinogen, which is crucial for blood clotting. The blood cells include erythrocytes (red blood cells), leukocytes (white blood cells), and platelets. Erythrocytes are the most abundant cells in the blood, with the primary function of transporting oxygen from the lungs to tissues and carbon dioxide from tissues back to the lungs. This is facilitated by haemoglobin, an iron-containing protein within erythrocytes that binds to oxygen. The lifespan of an erythrocyte is approximately 120 days, after which it is phagocytosed by macrophages, which are a type of myeloid phagocytic cells in the spleen and liver. Leukocytes are integral to the immune system, protecting the body against infections and foreign pathogens. They are categorized into granulocytes (neutrophils, eosinophils, and basophils) and agranulocytes (lymphocytes and monocytes).

• The proportion of bone varies depending on breed and body condition from 12 to 28% in the dressed carcase and approximately 15% in a good large ruminants carcase
• Bone percentage increases with the age and weight of the animal and it is lowest in Aberdeen Angus cattle and it may increase to 28% in low quality large ruminants

• Filiform papillae found on the tongue are pointing backward and horny and thus, helps in food prehension
• Actinobacillosis erodes the prominent posterior part of the tongue dorsum
• 10–14 circumvallate papillae are spread in the region of prominent dorsum around the either side of the tongue midline
• Black pigmentation of the tongue surface is fairly normal and not associated with any disease condition
Sheep and goat tongue
• Similar to cattle tongue
• However, papillae are not horny but the centre of the tip is slightly grooved
• Black pigmentation of the surface of the tongue is common in blackskinned sheep.

Bleeding disorders can be either congenital, present from birth, or acquired, developing later in life. Defects in blood clotting proteins typically result in delayed bleeding and deep tissue bruising, whereas platelet defects often lead to superficial bruises, nosebleeds, black stools, and prolonged bleeding at injection sites or during surgery. Blood clotting tests can identify animals with defective clotting proteins, but they are not very sensitive.
Congenital Clotting Protein Disorders
Congenital clotting protein disorders are present from birth, and severe deficiencies or defects in these proteins typically manifest early in life. Such severe defects can be fatal, with affected animals often being stillborn or dying shortly after birth. Additionally, a lack of clotting proteins or vitamin K in a newborn can exacerbate clotting issues. If the level of a specific clotting protein is only 5 to 10% of normal, the newborn might survive but is likely to show signs of illness before reaching 6 months of age.
Hypofibrinogenemia, characterized by an abnormal shortage of fibrinogen in the blood and severe bleeding, has been observed in Saint Bernards. Dysfibrinogenemia, which involves abnormally functioning fibrinogen, has been reported in an inbred family of Russian Wolfhounds. Affected dogs experience mild bleeding problems, such as nosebleeds, but may suffer life-threatening bleeding from injuries or surgeries. The best treatment for this condition is intravenous transfusion with fresh or fresh-frozen plasma.
Factor II (prothrombin) disorders are rare. Prothrombin is a key protein in blood clotting. In Boxer dogs, prothrombin is present in normal amounts but does not function properly. Affected puppies may experience nosebleeds and bleeding gums, which tend to improve with age. In adult dogs, easy bruising and inflamed skin are common. Treatment involves transfusions of whole blood or plasma Factor VII deficiency has been reported in several breeds, including Beagles, English Bulldogs, Alaskan Malamutes, Miniature Schnauzers, Boxers, and mixed-breed dogs. This condition can lead to prolonged bleeding after giving birth and is often diagnosed incidentally during clotting tests.

Introduction
Generally, muscles and offals obtained from animals feeding on grass and various other cultivated crops are regarded as meat. Apart from the meat obtained from the cattle, sheep, goat, pig and poultry, in many countries particularly Denmark, Belgium, Holland and Germany, horse meat is also consumed (hippophasia) as normal meat. Kangaroos are slaughtered for meat in Australia whereas capybara a large semi-aquatic vegetarian rodent, is used in South America as of one of the meat source. Dog meat (fragrant) is relished (Kinophasia) in few cultures such as South Korea, China, Vietnam and few north eastern states of India.
In many parts of the world including Indian subcontinent, buffalo meat (Bubalus bubalis), also known as water buffalo or arna, is quite popular owing to its tenderness, leanness and low cholesterol qualities. It is distributed in many countries around the world such as India (largest population), Pakistan, China, Bangladesh, Indonesia, Philippines, Hungary, Italy and France etc. Bison (Bison bison) from North America is also called buffalo but they are separate species of the order Bovidae. Rabbits are also source of meat having higher growth rate and better feed conversion ratio (2:1). Elands are another meat source which are raised in Africa and Russia for meat purpose.
Meat is quite high in protein content but the presence of saturated fat is perceived negatively due to its association in various cardiovascular diseases, diabetes etc. Efforts are made to produce lean meat having higher content of unsaturated fatty acids and to reduce the ω-6 to ω -3 fatty acids ratio.

Introduction
Normal reproduction in the female depends on hormones, which specific chemical substances produced by specialized glands are called endocrine glands. These secretions pass into the blood and lymph fluids and are transported to various parts of the body, where they exert several specific effects. Reproductive hormones may originate in the hypothalamus, pituitary, gonads, uterus, or placenta. Hypothalamic hormones are produced
in the hypothalamus, a portion of the brain that is the neural control center for reproductive hormones. The role of hypothalamic hormones is to regulate the release of other hormones from the pituitary gland, and many hypothalamic hormones are therefore called releasing hormones. The primary releasing hormone of reproduction is gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH). GnRH controls the release of follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH)
and luteinizing hormone (LH) from the pituitary gland, located at the base of the brain. These pituitary hormones regulate the production of estrogen and progesterone from the ovary. FSH stimulates the follicle’s growth, development, and function, while LH causes\= the follicle to rupture and the corpus luteum to develop. The female hormone estrogen is produced by the Graafian follicle on the ovary. Another hormone originating from the
ovary is progesterone, which is produced by the corpus luteum. Each has an important role in the female reproductive process.
A relatively new discovery in reproductive physiology is that follicular growth is not continuous in the bovine, but occurs in waves (2 to 4 waves per cycle). Each wave begins when the dominant follicle in the previous wave gains maximal size, at which time numerous small follicles begin a period of rapid growth. From this group of follicles, one follicle is allowed to grow to a much larger size than the others. This large follicle is called the dominant follicle, because it has the ability to regulate and restrict the growth of the smaller follicles. A few days after reaching maximum size, the dominant follicle begins to degenerate and die.

Visual perception, eyesight, sight, or vision is the ability to interpret the surrounding environment using light in the visible spectrum reflected by the objects in the environment. The eyes are the sensory organs that are extension of the brain; they receive visual information from the environment and transmit them to the visual sensory area of the brain for interpretation.
The pineal and para-pineal glands are photoreceptive in non-mammalian vertebrates. Birds have photoactive cerebrospinal fluid (CSF)-contacting neurons within the paraventricular organ that respond to light in the absence of input from the eyes or neurotransmitters.
Accessory Structure of the Eye
Eyelids - (Palpebrae) The free margins of the eyelids form the palpebral fissure. The edges where the upper and lower eyelids meet are called the lateral and medial canthus. The palpebral margins are lined by eyelashes. The eyelids are supported internally by sheets of connective tissue that form the tarsal plate.
Glands associated with the eyelids
Glands of Zeis - These are sebaceous glands associated with the eyelashes.
Tarsal glands - (Meibomian glands) - These glands line the inner margin of the lid and
produce a lipid-rich product that prevents the lids from sticking together.
Lacrimal caruncle - This is a mound of tissue in the medial canthus that produces thick secretions.
Conjunctiva It is the epithelium that lines the inner surface of the eyelids and continueson to the outer surface of the eye.
Palpebral conjunctiva lines the inner surface of the eyelid.
Bulbar conjunctiva lines the anterior surface of the eye.
Lacrimal Apparatus It produces, distributes and removes tears. Tears reduce friction, remove debris, prevent bacterial infection and provide nutrients and oxygen for the conjunctiva. Lacrimal glands are located near the lateral canthus of the eye. Tears flow over the cornea and are drained into the nose by the nasolacrimal duct.

Neurons with neurosecretory functions in the supraoptic and paraventricular nuclei of the hypothalamus
generate peptides and amines. Endocrine disorders refer to a broad range of conditions that affect the endocrine system, a complex network of glands responsible for producing and regulating hormones in the body.
Hormones play a crucial role in controlling various bodily functions, including growth and development, metabolism, electrolyte balance, and reproductive processes. When the endocrine system fails to function properly, it can lead to a wide range of disorders that can significantly impact an individual's quality of life. The endocrine system comprises several glands located throughout the body, each producing specific hormones that regulate various physiological processes. The main endocrine glands include:
1. Pituitary gland: Often referred to as the "master gland," the pituitary gland regulates the function of other endocrine glands and produces hormones that control growth and development.
2. Thyroid gland: Located in the neck, the thyroid gland produces hormones that regulate metabolism, energy production, and growth.
3. Adrenal glands: Situated on top of the kidneys, the adrenal glands produce hormones that control electrolyte balance, blood pressure, and stress response.

Introduction
In cattle, the digestive system consists of four primary compartments: the rumen, reticulum, omasum, and abomasum, followed by the small and large intestines. The rumen plays a crucial role as a fermentation chamber, maintaining anaerobic conditions and ensuring thorough mixing, as well as regulating temperature and pH levels. Food, which is frequently re-chewed, enters the rumen through the esophagus, where fermentation occurs.
The byproducts of fermentation are either absorbed within the rumen or moved on for further digestion and absorption in other parts of the digestive system. Simple indigestion in ruminants is a temporary disruption in gastrointestinal function, usually caused by a sudden change in the quality or quantity of their diet. Consuming large amounts of indigestible feed can impair rumen function for 24 to 48 hours after ingestion, as the accumulation of this feed can physically disrupt ruminal activity. Additionally, the breakdown of proteins in the rumen can produce toxic substances such as amides and amines, including histamine. This condition can lead to a significant drop in milk production due to a marked reduction in the production of volatile fatty acids in a hypotonic reticulorumen. Ruminal impaction is a condition seen in ruminants like cows, sheep,and goats, where the  rumen’s contents become compacted, obstructing their movement through the digestive tract. This condition can arise from various causes, including the ingestion of plastic waste, grazing habits, mineral deficiencies, negative energy balance, urbanization, inadequate water intake, low-fiber or high-grain diets, changes in feed or grazing patterns, and stress. The accumulation of foreign material can block fermentation, interfere with the mixing of rumen contents, and disrupt the rumen’s microflora, leading to indigestion. Acute ruminal acidosis is often caused by the sudden intake of large amounts of carbohydrate-rich feed, particularly grains. Subacute ruminal acidosis (SARA) occurs in dairy cattle and is characterized by disrupted ruminal fermentation. It typically results from feeding large amounts of concentrates with insufficient fiber, a practice often used to boost milk production during early lactation. This imbalance in diet can disturb rumen pH and microbial populations, leading to various metabolic and digestive problems. Chronic ruminal acidosis can lead to complications such as rumenitis, which is inflammation of the rumen, and laminitis, a painful condition affecting the hooves. Alkaline indigestion, also known as ruminal alkalosis, occurs when the pH of ruminal fluid rises above 7.5.

Understanding the clinical physiology of digestive disorders in monogastric animals is vital for veterinary professionals, animal caretakers, and researchers, as it enables them to recognize, iagnose, and treat various gastrointestinal conditions that may impact these 
species. This introduction provides an overview of the fundamental aspects of digestive physiology in monogastric animals, outlines common digestive disorders, and highlights the importance of this knowledge in clinical practice.
The digestive tract of monogastric animals consists of several organs that work together to break down food, absorb nutrients, and expel waste. The primary components include the mouth, esophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine, and associated glands such as the salivary glands, liver, and pancreas.
The digestive process begins in the mouth, where food is mechanically broken down by chewing and mixed with saliva, which contains enzymes like amylase to initiate the breakdown of carbohydrates. The bolus of food is then transported through the esophagus to the stomach via coordinated muscular contractions known as peristalsis. In the stomach, food is mixed with gastric secretions, including hydrochloric acid (HCl) and digestive enzymes like pepsin, which help break down proteins. The stomach’s acidic environment also plays a critical role in killing pathogens and aiding the digestion of certain nutrients, such as vitamin B12. The stomach of monogastric animals differs from that of ruminants, as it does not possess multiple compartments for fermentation but rather relies on enzymatic digestion.
The chyme (partially digested food) passes into the small intestine, where most digestion and nutrient absorption occur. The small intestine is composed of three segments-the duodenum, jejunum, and ileum-each with specialized functions. Enzymes secreted by the pancreas and bile from the liver facilitate the digestion of carbohydrates, proteins, and fats. The intestinal lining, with its villi and microvilli, maximizes the surface area for nutrient absorption.

Introduction
Heart failure can develop as a complication of almost all congenital and acquired cardiac diseases in dogs and cats. Cardiac disease is a significant global health concern, impacting both humans and domestic animals, particularly dogs. In the animal kingdom, the cardiovascular system consists of essential components, including the heart, veins, arteries, and capillary beds. Its proper function depends on complex mechanisms, such
as the atrioventricular valves (mitral and tricuspid) and the semilunar valves (aortic and pulmonic), which ensure that blood flows in only one direction through the heart. The activity of the cardiovascular system, including heart contraction rates and strengths, as well as blood vessel diameter adjustments, is regulated by the autonomic nervous system (both sympathetic and parasympathetic branches) and various hormones.
The strength of ventricular contractions is influenced by several factors, primarily enddiastolic volume (preload) and myocardial contractility (inotropy). Preload is the amount of blood in the ventricles just before they contract, while contractility refers to the ability of the heart muscle fibers to contract. Preload is determined by the difference between the end-diastolic pressure in the ventricle and the pressure in the pleural space, adjusted for the
stiffness of the ventricular myocardium. This pressure is influenced by the ratio of blood volume to the heart muscle’s compliance. Low-pressure volume receptors in the heart and large veins primarily regulate preload. When these receptors detect increased blood volume or vein distension, they trigger responses such as increased urine production and vein dilation, which help reduce blood volume and lower venous pressures. Increased enddiastolic volume (preload) stretches the ventricular wall, enhancing contraction strength through the Frank-Starling mechanism, or Starling’s law of the heart. This stretching activates receptors in the atria and ventricles, leading to the release of natriuretic peptides like brain natriuretic peptide (BNP) from the ventricles and atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP) from the atria) These peptides promote natriuresis, relax smooth muscle, and counteract
vasopressin and angiotensin II. In dogs, levels of BNP and NT-proBNP are directly related to cardiac stretch.

Introduction
India has a well-established fisheries and aquaculture industry that significantly impacts Gross Domestic Product (GDP), foreign exchange, and nutrition. The fisheries sector plays a crucial role in India’s economy, contributing approximately 1.07% to the national GDP and 6.72% to agricultural GDP in 2021-22 (Economic Survey, 2022). India is second-largest producer of fish in the world (after China), with an annual production of around 16.24 million metric tonnes (MMT) in 2022–23, comprising 12.2 MMT from Inland fisheries and 4.04 MMT from marine fisheries. The fisheries sector has experienced remarkable growth over the decades. Fish production surged from 0.75 MMT in 1950-51 to 12.59 MMT in 2018-19, marking a seventeen-fold increase. This growth has been accompanied by a rise in the sector’s contribution to agricultural GDP, which impressively increased from 0.84% in 1950 to 5.7% in 2017. India is one of the largest seafood exporters, with exports reaching INR 63,969 crores ($8.09 billion) in 2022-23 (Marine Products Export Development Authority - MPEDA). Frozen shrimp is the leading export commodity, followed by frozen fish and cephalopods. The USA, China, the EU, and Southeast Asian nations are key export markets. This robust performance underscores the sector’s role in bolstering India’s foreign exchange reserves. A primary challenge in the domestication and sustainable culture of candidate species lies in the standardization of induced breeding techniques. Controlled reproduction in captivity remains suboptimal for many commercially important aquaculture species. In captivity, females of several species often fail to complete oocyte maturation (Corriero et al., 2021), while males exhibit inadequate milt production (Zohar et al., 1989; Peter et al., 1993). Hormonal manipulation and environmental stimulation are considered effective approaches to overcome these challenges and facilitate captive maturation for induced breeding.
Several hormone analogues, such as gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH), follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), and luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone (LHRH), have been developed into commercial formulations like Ovaprim™, Ovatide™, and Wova-FH™, which target the brain-pituitarygonad (BPG) axis. However, these hormones have shown limited efficacy in the induced breeding of some commercially important species, including catfish. Recent studies suggest that neurohypophysial nonapeptide hormones also play a crucial role in modulating the GnRH– onadotropin (GTH)–steroid hormone pathway (Joy and Chaube, 2015). In mammals, nonapeptides include oxytocin (OT) and vasopressin (VP), which are homologous to isotocin (IT) and vasotocin (VT) in teleost fish. These nonapeptides, consisting of nine amino acids, are classified as basic (VT and VP) or neutral (OT and IT), depending on the amino acid at the eighth position. For example, VP has arginine, whereas OT has leucine at this position (Stoop, 2012).
In Heteropneustes fossilis, a novel neuropeptide gene, savetocin, has been identified, distinguished from IT by the substitution of valine for isoleucine at the eighth position. Nonapeptides also have homologues in other organisms, such as annetocin in worms and insects, inotocin in mollusks, and conopressin in leeches and Lymnaea stagnalis. Among vertebrates, lungfish, amphibians,
reptiles, and birds produce mesotocin and vasotocin, whereas marsupials secrete oxytocin and phenypressin (Darlison and Richter, 1999). These findings highlight the diversity and evolutionary significance of nonapeptides,
as well as their potential as novel targets for improving induced breeding in
aquaculture species.

The knowledge allows for early detection of diseases, select effective treatment plans, and improved outcomes for animal patients. It is used to monitor the effects of treatment interventions, adjusting medications or therapies based on the physiological responses observed in the patient. A solid understanding of cardiovascular physiology is essential to manage heart failure condition in dog, and, treating respiratory diseases in cats or gastrointestinal
disorders in horses, relies on the knowledge of respiratory and digestive physiology. Beyond treatment, clinical physiology also plays a significant role in preventive medicine. Knowing the normal range of heart rates, blood pressure, and respiratory rates in different species allows veterinarians to quickly assess whether an animal is in distress or experiencing a pathological condition, and allow for timely intervention. It is also critical in managing the health of populations of animals, such as in livestock farming, where maintaining optimal physiological function is essential for productivity and welfare. The major systems in the body - including the cardiovascular, respiratory, digestive, nervous, endocrine, renal, musculoskeletal, reproductive, and immune systems, can be affected by a variety of diseases, and clinical physiology provides the framework for understanding these effects. It encompasses the study of physiological processes across a wide range of species, including companion animals, livestock, wildlife, and exotic animals.

Freshwater pearl farming is an emerging and promising sector within India’s aquaculture industry, offering significant potential for economic growth and sustainability. As the country modernizes its agricultural and aquacultural practices, the cultivation of freshwater pearls presents a lucrative opportunity for farmers, particularly in regions where traditional agriculture faces challenges. Recognizing its importance, the Indian government has integrated pearl farming into its broader Blue Revolution initiative, which seeks to enhance the fishing sector and improve livelihoods through sustainable practices.
China and Japan are the main producers of freshwater and marine pearls, respectively, whereas China is the world’s biggest producer of pearls, including both marine and freshwater pearls, with 3540 tonnes produced, accounting for 98% of global pearl production. Bangladesh, Korea, Thailand, and Vietnam, have recently begun both research and industrial-scale programs in response to the worldwide commerce potential of farmed freshwater pearls (Fassler, 1994). The history of pearl farming in India dates back to 1969 with the stablishment of the Central Institute of Freshwater Aquaculture (CIFA), which initiated the cultivation of freshwater mussels for pearl production. This effort has gained momentum over the years, with states like Gujarat, Maharashtra, and Rajasthan becoming key players in the industry. Farmers in these regions are increasingly adopting pearl farming as a viable and profitable alternative to
conventional agriculture. India is home to over 50 species of mussels found in various freshwater ecosystems.When a foreign body becomes lodged within the mantle (the skin) of pearl mussels or oysters, the mantle secretes a nacreous substance in response to the irritation. This process results in the formation of layer-by-layer nacre coating over the intruding object. Nacre consists of
80-90% calcium carbonate (CaCO3) and a protein called Conchiolin. As this sector develops, freshwater pearl farming not only promises to contribute to the economic growth of local communities but also positions India as a competitive player in the global pearl market. By addressing existing challenges and continuing to support innovation and education, the future of freshwater pearl farming in India looks increasingly bright.

The aquatic environment is adversely affected by antibiotics and their residuals, as a significant proportion of bacterial strains are developing resistance to these pharmaceuticals within the ecosystem. Consequently, there has been a concerted emphasis on the exploration of environmentallysustainable alternatives (Kumar et al., 2020). The public increasingly recommend natural compounds, while the utilization of synthetic chemicals, hormones, and antibiotics is increasingly becoming impractical owing to consumer apprehensions and stringent regulatory frameworks in numerous nations (Chakarborty et al., 2014).
Phytobiotics can be conceptualized as products originating from plants that are incorporated into animal feed to optimize performance in aquatic species. Predominantly, leaves, roots, tubers, or fruits of various herbs, spices, and other botanical sources may be utilized as phytobiotics (Arts and Hollman, 2005). These substances are typically employed to promote enhanced growth performance in the cultivation of shrimp and fish. Wastewater management has emerged as a critical environmental concern, posing severe threats to ecosystems, human health, and animal life due to  inadequate treatment and disposal systems. Various technologies have been employed to manage wastewater effectively, among which biological treatment techniques have gained widespread acceptance. These methods are  favoured for their affordability, operational simplicity, minimal reliance on chemicals, lower energy consumption, and eco-friendly characteristics (Smith and Brown, 2020). Among biological treatment processes, both aerobic and anaerobic methods are extensively utilized, with specific focus on Upflow Anaerobic Sludge Blanket (UASB), Expanded Granular Sludge Blanket (EGSB), and UASB-aerobic digester reactors. Comparative analyses of these approaches highlight their treatment efficiencies, advantages, drawbacks, and operational constraints. Additionally, the integration of aerobic and anaerobic treatment systems, particularly the UASB-aerobic digester combination, has shown promising results in optimizing wastewater treatment (Jones et al., 2021).
In many underdeveloped and developing regions, inadequate wastewater management has led to severe sanitation challenges, exacerbating health risks and facilitating the spread of waterborne diseases. The lack of proper wastewater treatment, combined with deficient healthcare infrastructure and inadequate housing, further aggravates the situation. Wastewater typically contains high concentrations of biodegradable pollutants such as Total Suspended Solids (TSS), Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD), and Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), which, if discharged untreated, contribute significantly to environmental degradation (Lee and Wang, 2019). Both organic and inorganic contaminants originating from domestic, industrial, and agricultural sources play a major role in water pollution. In regions suffering from water scarcity, the reuse of treated wastewater is an essential strategy for water conservation and sustainability (WHO, 2022).

Aquaculture is one of the food-producing industries with the fastest rate of growth in the world and is widely recognized for its substantial contributions to food security, revenue production, and poverty alleviation (Subhasinghe, 2003). The production of aquaculture has increased dramatically during the last 30 years, from less than 20 million tonnes in the early 1990s to 178.9 million tonnes in 2022. The aquaculture industry reported an average growth rate of 6.7% per year globally from 1990 to 2020 (FAO, 2022). In 2020-22, the global annual per capita fish consumption was 20.4 kg (FAO, 2022). In addition, 58.5 million people were engaged in this sector worldwide for their livelihood. Many new approaches and technologies have been developed to increase the production. However, aquaculture faces significant challenges, including environmental quality, quality seed availability, and disease management (Sitcha et al., 2020; Oglend, 2020). To address these issues, the aquaculture industry adopts new scientific and technological advancements. Among the recent advancements in science, nanotechnology is fast emerging as a novel tool for the next generation of aquaculture and fisheries development. (Shah et al., 2020).

Introduction
Water is an essential and irreplaceable environmental resource, fundamental to the survival of diverse living organisms on Earth. Covering approximately 70% of the planet’s surface, water is categorized into freshwater, marine and saline water. The freshwater system is further divided into lentic (e.g., lakes and ponds) and lotic (e.g., streams, rivers and springs), which serve as crucial sources for meeting daily human water needs (Mishra et al., 2015, 2016). Presently, water quality is influenced by both natural and human-induced factors, including climate conditions, irrigation practices, topography and geological features (Harman et al., 2012). Key physicochemical properties— such as temperature, dissolved oxygen, pH, transparency, conductivity and water current—along with chemical parameters like nitrates, phosphates, heavy metals and organic matter, play a vital role in evaluating the effects ofpollution on water quality (Awasthi and Tiwari, 2004).
Upto pollution has become a major global challenge, driven by rapid industrialization, population growth and urban expansion (Bijekar et al.,2022). The release of untreated or insufficiently treated wastewater into natural water bodies raises serious environmental and public health concerns (Akpor and Muchie, 2011). Wastewater contains diverse pollutants, including heavy metals, organic compounds, pathogens, pharmaceuticals and microplastics, all of which pose significant threats to aquatic ecosystems and human well-being. Conventional treatment methods such as sedimentation, filtration and chemical treatments often fail to effectively remove emerging contaminants and achieve complete purification. Additionally, these traditional techniques can be costly, energy-intensive and may generate secondary pollutants requiring further treatment. In response, the demand for more efficient, sustainable and costeffective wastewater treatment solutions has fuelled research into advanced technologies like nanotechnology (Palit et al., 2023).

Abstract
Legumes are an excellent group of fertility restorer crops which can be grown either as sole crop or as a component crop in the cropping system. As they are tolerant to drought condition, they can be grown throughout the year. The yield of legume crop is largely depending on pest, diseases and weeds. Among these weeds plays a major role as the weed seed bank inside the soil influence the weed population in the cropping season. Hence it is important to manage the weed seed bank for better productivity of legumes. Though legumes are short duration and fast growing crops, the germination percentage of weed seed bank will determine the final yield of legumes. There are many strategies to which the weed seed bank can be controlled to tolerable level before which the weed seed bank present in the soil has to estimate. Annual weed seed bank can be minimized by killing the weeds before they set seeds, harvest weeds, crop rotation, cover crops, inter cropping and ensiling. Weed seed bank depletion can be done by tillage, tricking the weed seeds, conditioning weed seeds, soil solarisation and herbicide application. Thus integrating various technologies may help in effective controlling of weed seeds to tolerable level thereby enhancing the yield of leguminous crops.

Abstract
India shares one fourth of global annual grain legume production and is also largest consumer of it. Weeds are the most severe and widespread biological constraint on agricultural production systems and cause damage to cropped and non-cropped lands. They reduce crop yield and degrade the quality of the produce, besides raising the cost of production. The grain legumesare commonly grown under rainfed/dry land conditions and hence do not receive the best management practices that are required for maximization of crop productivity. Among various production inputs, weed management was found to be the most important one contributing about 31% in pigeon pea, 110% in urdbean and 60 % in mungbean towards total productivity. Effective weed management in grain legumes is essential for optimizing
crop yield and quality. This process involves a multi-faceted approach that integrates cultural, mechanical, and chemical methods to address the challenges posed by diverse weed species and varying environmental conditions. Traditional single-method approaches often fall short due to the complexity and variability of weed problems like development of resistance in weeds. Therefore, an integrated weed management approach becomes effective, combining timely interventions with adaptive strategies to manage weed competition throughout the growing season. Next-generation sequencing (NGS), a High Throughput Sequencing (HTS) methodology, sometimes referred to as deep sequencing or massively parallel sequencing, has completely changed genomic research and DNA sequencing. Compared to the traditional Sanger sequencing approach, which took more than ten years to finish the human genome project, this state-of-the-arttechnology allows scientists to sequence a full human genome in a single day (Behjati and Tarpey, 2013). Although Sanger sequencing has mostly been replaced by NGS in research areas, it is still not widely used in clinical areas (Slatko et al., 2018). High-throughput DNA sequencing techniques have developed quickly over the past 20 years, and new approaches are constantly being developed. A greater range of applications in the basic and applied sciences become available as these technologies advance (Reis-Filho, 2009).
Overfishing, pollution, and climate change are putting the world’s aquatic ecosystems, which are home to a wide variety of fish species under previously unheard-of strain (Prakash, 2021). For effective conservation and management, accurate and efficient monitoring of fish diversity is therefore essential (Meinam et al., 2023). Techniques like physical capture and morphological identification have been used historically, but they can be intrusive, time-consuming, and labor-intensive. A new age of fish diversity monitoring has been brought about by the development of NGS technologies, which provide a potent and noninvasive substitute (Kumar and Kocour, 2017). Rapid and thorough genetic material analysis is made possible by NGS, which offers previously unheardof insights into the distribution, composition, and population dynamics of species.

This approval marked the beginning of transgenic animal food production, demonstrating the potential of genetic engineering to enhance food production efficiency. In addition, genome-edited fish, such as the CRISPR-Cas9 modified tiger puffer and red sea bream, have been approved in Japan, further showcasing the advancements in gene-editing technologies for improving aquaculture species. Food insecurity and malnutrition are on the rise globally, impacting millions, especially in rural regions where extreme poverty and food insecurity are deeply rooted. Vulnerable groups, including women, youth, and indigenous peoples, are disproportionately affected. Producing foo  that meets dietary needs and ensuring its availability in the future is essential for sustainable development and food sustainability. Addressing the growing global food security concerns and supporting the increasing population requires the continual expansion of plant-based proteins’ significance. Legumes are excellent sources of proteins, carbohydrates, and both soluble and insoluble dietary fibers. Legumes, with their high dietary fiber and low-fat content, help maintain body weight and lower the risk of cardiovascular disease. They are also rich in essential minerals such as potassium, calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, and iron, and provide important vitamins like folate, thiamine (B1), riboflavin (B2), and niacin (B3). Additionally, pulses contain various phytochemicals, including phenolics, flavonoids, phytates, lectins, tannins, saponins, oxalates, enzyme inhibitors, phytosterols, and antimicrobial peptides, which offer numerous potential health benefits. These phytochemicals exhibit anti-inflammatory, anticancer, antimicrobial, and anti-ulcerative properties. Incorporating legumes into agricultural systems can foster more sustainable and climate-resilient farming practices. It is an incontrovertible fact that the climate has changed in the past, is currently experiencing changes, and will persist in changing irrespective of the extent of mitigation efforts invested. Defined as a substantial shift in weather patterns over a period ranging from a few decades to millions of years, climate change is a phenomenon of critical importance that commands our attention and action. Fisheries and aquaculture are becoming a global industry in terms of food production and employment- enerating sectors. Millions of people in India rely on fisheries for a living, either directly or indirectly, as subsistence fisheries, typically located at the bottom of the economic pyramid, with lower earnings, disorganised jobs, and greater socioeconomic risk (Dutta et al., 2007). The fisheries sector contributes 1.03 per cent of the Indian GDP. Climate change badly hampered the food production sector, the fisheries sector is also not untouched due to its dependency on local weather and climate parameters (Temperature, Precipitation, humidity etc.). In its third assessment report, which was released in 2001, the Inter-Governmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) came to the conclusion that new or altered insect pest incidence and decreased crop yields in most tropical and sub-tropical regions would disproportionately affect the poorest nations (IPCC, 2001). To meet the food needs of a growing population in the face of climate change, climate-smart aquaculture (CSA) is an integrated approach to improving technological, policy, and investment conditions to promote sustainable agricultural development for food security (FAO, 2015).

The United Nations predicts that by 2050, the global population will reach 9.6 billion, leading to urgent challenges such as ensuring food security and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Climate change, coupled with biotic and abiotic pressures, will significantly impact global food production. Despite advances in agriculture, malnutrition remains a widespread issue, affecting millions, especially in developing countries. Protein-energy malnutrition, which affects over 170 million children and women, poses a significant threat to national economic development, increasing healthcare costs and reducing productivity. One key solution to combating malnutrition lies in promoting legumes (pulses), which are nutrient-dense, protein-rich, and vital for both human and animal consumption. for centuries, providing essential nutrients like protein, fiber, vitamins, and minerals. sectors among global food systems. With the increasing demand for fish and seafood, there is increasing pressure to find sustainable solutions for feeding farmed fish (Tacon et al., 2011). Traditional fish feed, primarily derived from wild-caught fish (Fishmeal) and land-based crops, presents several environmental and economic challenges. These include overfishing, deforestation, and rising feed costs, which threaten the sustainability of the aquaculture industry. Hence, there is an urgent need for alternate feed ingredients (Olsen and Hasan, 2012).
The feed has largest environmental impact in the intensive culture system. Hence, more prominence has to be given to a selection of fish feed ingredients, which can contribute to reduce the environmental impact and target on growth of the animal. Intensification should go in hand with sustainability of the system and feed ingredients play a significant role in it. In response to these concerns, microorganisms have emerged as a promising solution to enhance fish nutrition in a more sustainable manner. These technologies are increasingly valuable in addressing challenges such as climate change, pest infestations, and the demand for sustainable practices. Grain legumes, including peas, beans, lentils, and chickpeas, are vital for global food security and soil health due to their protein content and nitrogen-fixing capabilities. However, their productivity is often threatened by pests, diseases, and weeds. Remote sensing allows for early detection of crop stress through analysis of specific wavelengths of light, enabling farmers to identify issues before visible symptoms appear. Tools like the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) provide insights into crop health, allowing for timely and targeted interventions. Hyperspectral and multispectral imaging further enhance disease detection by identifying physiological changes in crops that are not visible to the naked eye. In addition to disease monitoring, remote sensing aids in pest management by detecting changes in plant temperature profiles and utilizing drone surveillance for real-time data collection. The growing global population has intensified farming practices, increasing the use of fossil fuels and agrochemicals. With limited land and the need to enhance food production, balancing environmental impact, especially carbon footprints, is crucial. Climate-smart mitigation options, with a prime emphasis on crop diversification, can help agriculture adapt to anomalous weather patterns and build resilience. Legumes offer a sustainable solution by reducing greenhouse gas emissions, as they produce 5-7 times less gases per unit area compared to other crops. They aid in carbon sequestration, with soil carbon estimates of 7.21 g kg-1 of dry matter, and save fossil energy by decreasing nitrogen fertilizer use, reducing CO2 emissions by 277 kg ha-1 per year. Legumes play a key role in low-emission farming systems due to their ability to fix atmospheric nitrogen, reducing dependence on energy-intensive synthetic fertilizers. They improve soil health, enhance soil structure, and support carbon sequestration. Integrating legumes into crop rotations reduces the need for chemical pesticides and fertilizers. Additionally, legumes can be used in food, feed, and biofuels, lowering reliance on more carbon-intensive resources.
