Papaya, Carica papaya is a fruit mainly grown in tropical and sub-tropical regions. India is top most producer of papaya in the world and accounts for around 45 per cent of the total papaya production in the world. In India, the main cultivation of papaya is in the states of Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Orissa, West Bengal, Kerala, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Gujarat. In north, due to frost problem, the cultivation is fruitful only in frost free areas as this fruit crop is highly frost sensitive. Papaya mealy bug, Paracoccus marginatus Williams & Granara de Willink (Pseudococcidae: Hemiptera)

It is an invasive pest believed to be a native of Mexico or Central America. In India, it was first reported in Tamil Nadu during July 2008 infesting papaya and later it spread to number of fruit, vegetables and ornamental crops in many states. The eggs are grain like and greenish yellow. The nymphs as well as adult is yellow but appears white due to waxy coating over its body

Grape, Vitis vinifera are cultivated mainly in the sub-tropical and tropical regions, however, it can also be grown in the temperate regions. Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu are the main grape growing states. In India, the grapevine cultivation is mainly for producing fruits for the table purpose. Around 80 insect pests and mites cause damage in the grape vine yards directly or indirectly, of which few are of major importance. The damage can be checked if the details of the major pest problems are known in advance. The details about major insect pests and mites are given hereunder:

Thrips, Rhipiphorothrips cruentatus Hood (Thripidae: Thysanoptera)

It is a polyphagous pest feeding on number of hosts like rose, jamun, guava etc. but grapevine is the most preferred host. This pest is prevalent in all grapevine growing regions of the country. The cultivation of pineapple, Ananas comosus is prevalent in Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Bihar and North eastern parts of the country. It is one of the choicest fruits all over the world because of its pleasant taste and flavour. Pineapple is a good source of vitamin A and B and fairly rich in vitamin C and minerals like calcium, magnesium, potassium and iron. It is also a source of bromelin, a digestive enzyme. Mealy bug, Dysmicoccus brevipes (Cockerell) (Pseudococcidae: Hemiptera)

It is a polyphagous pest and besides pineapple it infests banana, sugarcane, citrus, coffee and long pepper. These are small, oval and soft bodied sucking insects. The eggs are pink in colour but remain inside the female body. The first stage nymphs are called crawlers which moves to find a suitable spot for sucking of cell sap, thereafter they settle at a particular place. The adult is elliptical and bears 17 pairs of wax filaments (Plate 10h). The colour of the pest is pink but looks white due to white waxy covering. Sapota leaf webber, Nephopteryx eugraphella Ragonot (Pyralidae: Lepidoptera)

This is a pest of major concern in Chickoo cultivation in India. The eggs are oval and pale yellow in colour which change to reddish brown near hatching. The caterpillar is pinkish in appearance and bears two longitudinal dorsolateral lines. The full fed larva measures 25 mm in length. The newly formed light green pupa changes to reddish brown in the later stage. Banana, Musa paradisiaca is one of the most important tropical fruit crops. Banana weevil, Cosmopolites sordidus (Germar) (Curculionidae: Coleoptera)

It is most destructive and specific pest of banana and is distributed throughout the country. The eggs are elongate, oval (about 2 mm long), pearly white and present on upper surface and crevices of rhizome. The grubs are creamy white, stout, fleshy swollen in the middle and has red head capsule (Plate 10a). The full grown grub measures 15 mm in length. Pomegranate, Punica granatum is a non-climacteric fruit belonging to smallest Botanical family Punicaceae. In India, Maharashtra is a leading producer of pomegranate followed by Gujarat. Around 90 pests are reported to feed on pomegranate plant out of which only few are of economic concern. The major insect pests and mites are discussed herewith:

Anar butterfly, Deudorix epijarbas (Moore); D. isocrates (Fabricius); (Lycaenidae: Lepidoptera)

Pomegranate fruit borer, commonly known as anar butterfly is a polyphagous direct pest found throughout the country. In addition to pomegranate, it also feeds on number of crops viz. litchi, citrus, loquat, guava, sapota, aonla etc. Even the wild pomegranate is heavily infested by the fruit borer. Two species namely Deudorix epijarbas and D. isocrates are reported feeding on pomegranate out of which the former is found in hilly terrain of Northern India whereas, the latter exists in the plains of the country. The eggs are glossy, light green and shiny. The larva is dark brown with short hairs and bears whitish patches all over the body (Plate 9d). The full fed larva measures 17-20mm. Ber, Ziziphus mauritiana is indigenous to India and was called as poor man’s fruit earlier. But now it has become a good source of income to the orchardists, in the arid and semi-arid regions of the country, mainly with the development of new varieties. A number of insect pests (around 150) infest the ber tree but only few are the major ones, the description of which is provided below:

Fruit fly, Carpomya vesuviana Costa (Tephritidae: Diptera)

It is a major pest of ber in all the ber growing regions and proves as a bottleneck in its production and productivity. It is monophagous and develops only in fruits of Ziziphus spp. Most of the cultivated varieties are susceptible to this direct pest. The eggs are small, elongate, spindle shaped and creamy white. Maggots are creamy white (Plate 9a) and slightly smaller than maggots of other fruit flies. Pupae are barrel shaped and brown. Adults are smaller than housefly, brownish yellow with brown longitudinal stripes on the thorax. This fruit fly can be distinguished easily from other species due to distinctive pattern of black marks on the scutum and scutellum (Plate 9a). Wings are hyaline with four yellow cross bands.

Guava, Psidium guajava is one of the important fruits of tropical- sub-tropical regions of the world. It is a native of American tropics and probably originated from Peru north to Mexico and the Caribbean. The major producing countries include India, Brazil and Mexico, of which, Brazil is the largest producer of guava in the world. In India, it is grown over an area of over 2, 05,000 hectares with a production of 2.46 million metric tonnes. The fruit is rich in vitamin C and A. It is used both for processing and for table purpose world over. More than 80 insect pests have been reported to inflict varying degree of damage at different stages of crop growth. The important ones of these are discussed hereunder;

Litchi, Litchi chinensis, is one of the important fruit crops of South East Asia and Australian Continent. The crop thrives well in sub-tropical areas experiencing cool dry winters and warm wet summers. India and China are the major producers of litchi in the world. In India, Bihar, Uttarakhand and West Bengal contribute maximum in litchi production. Few major insect pests and mites are of concern, the details of which are as under:

Red rust, Eriophyid mite, Aceria litchii Keifer (Eriophyidae: Prostigmata) and red rust alga, Cephaleuros virescens Kunze (Trentepholiaceae: Trentepohliales)

Mango, Mangifera indica is indigenous to India and ranks at number one as for as production and export are concerned. The productivity of mango in India is low (6.6MT/ha) and one of the reasons for the same is pests associated with the crop at varying stages of the tree growth. Around 175 insect pests have been reported to infest mango but only few are the major pests the details of which re provided hereunder:

Mango hopper, Idioscopus clypealis (Lethiery); I. niveosparsus (Lethiery); Amritodus atkinsoni (Lethiery) (Cicadellidae: Hemiptera) Hoppers constitute one of the most destructive pests of mango throughout the country. The eggs are dull white and concealed inside tissue. The colour of the nymphs vary from dust yellow to pale yellow and these nymphs walk in a crab like manner. The adults are small wedge shaped grayish insects measuring3.4-5.1mm in length. Amritodus atkinsoni is comparatively bigger and light brown in colour with two spots on scutellum, while Idioscopus clypealis is smallest and lighter in colour with dark spots

Subtropical and Tropical Fruits

Most of the area of India experience subtropical and tropical climate. Subtropical and tropical fruits contribute maximum to the overall fruit production. Major fruit crops cultivated in subtropical and tropical region are citrus, mango, litchi, guava, sapota, pomegranate, banana, ber, sapota, grapevine, papaya etc. Various pests affect the fruit production by infesting at various stages of the tree growth quantitatively as well as qualitatively. The pests of these crops are described fruit wise.

Citrus

Most of the area of our country is tropical and subtropical, where the citrus, Citrus spp. cultivation is practiced and main citrus growing areas are in Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Punjab, Karnataka, Uttarakhand, Bihar, Orissa, Assam and Gujarat. As for as the ranking in the world

The stone fruit crops namely peach, Prunus persica, plum, Prunus domestica, apricot, Prunus armeniaca, almond, Prunus dulcis and walnut, Juglans regia are grown in wide range of climatic conditions ranging from subtropical to temperate regions. Peach and plum are also cultivated in mid and low hills in addition to temperate regions. Peach is the major stone fruit crop followed by plum, apricot and cherry. Walnut and almond on the other hand are major nut crops. A number of insect pests (~80) infest stone and nut fruits in various stages of the tree growth and development and cause direct and indirect loss out. Temperate fruits

Pome fruits and stone and nut fruits are mainly cultivated in the temperate regions, which usually requires chilling requirements. Among stone and nut fruits cherry, apricot, peach and plum are the main crops whereas among the nut fruits, walnut, almond are major crops which are a source of handsome income to the orchardists of those areas. The insect and mite pests of pome, stone and nut fruits are described hereunder:

Insects are prevalent on this globe due to their varied adaptations and hence constitute the largest component of the animal kingdom. Only around 5 per cent of the total insect species, act as pests, rest either are beneficial like honey bees, lac insect, silk worms etc. or are harmless. Insect pests can be of medical, veterinary, house hold and agricultural importance, as these creatures harm our health, animals’ health, our belongings and also the agricultural health. Though all these components are equally important but, in this book, the last one i.e. agricultural health, have been taken into consideration. Insect pests cause around 20 per cent loss to our crops by directly or indirectly affecting the crops both quantitatively and qualitatively. The insects have different types of mouth parts which are used for sucking, biting and chewing, sponging and lapping, siphoning etc. for food required for their survival and the insects with sucking and biting, and chewing types of mouth parts cause much of the damage. The mites (Phylum Arthropoda) though do not belong to class Insecta but in some instances also are of economic importance as they cause economic damage to agricultural crops and produce.

Collection trips were organized in a planned manner so as to cover every locality in all three seasons. Rural and remote areas which were thus far practically unexplored were surveyed more intensively. Frequency of collection trips was twice a week during first year; once a fortnight in third and once a month in the last and forth years. During the field work, observations on the habit and habitat; flower colour; fragrance; fruiting, colour of the bark and blaze in case of trees and shrubs; dominance and sociability of the collected plants were entered into rough field book. In the mean time information regarding medicinal or other uses, if any, were gathered from local inhabitants, vaidyas and haquims. Plants of small size were uprooted carefully and pressed as such. In case of larger plants, care was taken so that specimens should have flowers, fruits, leaves and stems of young and old stages. At least four specimens, for making herbarium sheets, were pressed at spot after tagging; and a tagged bundle of a few plants was taken in a polythene bag for study in laboratory.

The publication of “Flora of British India” by Hooker (1872-1897) was followed by a series of regional floras by Cooke (1901-08) for Bombay presidency; Prawn (1903) for Bengal: Duthie (completed by Parker & Turrill, 1905-29) for upper gangetic plains and adjacent Siwalik and of sub Himalayan tracts; Kanjilal (1966) for the forest flora of Uttar Pradesh; Gamble (completed by Fisher, 1915-1936) for Presidency of Madras; Haines (1921-1925) for Bihar and Orissa: and Kanji et al (1934-1940) for Assam. Duthie’s work was completed by Raizada and associates (Raizada, 1954, Raizada et al. 1961; 1983; Raizada & Jain, 1964, 1966). Later, Raizada (1976) brought together all additions made to Duthie Flora. However, the trends of additions has persisted afterwards and is hoped to continue onwards as well. Revision of old floras has become all the more important because the nomenclature of a large number of species has changed in accordance with International Code of Botanical Nomenclature (1956, 1961, 1966, 1972, 1978 & 1983).

Among all the plant species which have been already reported by many researchers for their ethno medicinal properties are getting very rare in their original habitat.These plants are obviously of great medicinal importance and immediate need of conservation.Some medicinal plants which are exclusively found in forest are getting lost due to habitat fragmentation and enormous deforestation.

Chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.) is the third most important pulse crop grown all over the world. Chickpea is infested by an average of about 60 insectspests, of which gram pod borer, Helicoverpa armigera (Hubner) (Lepidoptera : Noctuidae) is known to be the key pest. Helicoverpa is responsible for causing up to 90 % damage in chickpea due to its regular occurrences. In order to manage this problem, growers are tempted to increase the amounts of pesticides, but indiscriminate or injudicious use of pesticides has resulted in residues in the food chain, pesticide resistance, and pest resurgence, in addition to causing harm to non-targeted beneficial organisms and the environment. Here, we reviewed the sustain- able approaches to reduce the incidence of pod borer and achieve sustainability in chickpea production systems through the adoption of an integrated approach involving host plant resistance, good agronomic practices, and judicious use of chemical and biological methods.

Sustainable approaches to crop protection that reduce the environmental impact of chemical pesticides. Use of biocontrol agents, systemic resistance inducers, gene-silencing technology, and plant nutrition to control diseases sustainably. Engaging multiple sectors to implement sustainable crop protection solutions. These efforts aim to create a more balanced and sustainable approach to agriculture, fostering resilience against plant diseases while minimizing the environmental footprint of farming practices.

Soil health management plays a pivotal role in sustainable agriculture and directly influencing plant growth, crop productivity and environmental quality. Healthy soils are essential for nutrient cycling, water retention and supporting a diverse array of microorganisms that contribute to plant resilience. However, modern agricultural practices, including the excessive use of chemical fertilizers, monoculture cropping and improper irrigation, have degraded soil health, leading to nutrient imbalances, reduced organic matter and soil erosion. This has sparked a growing awareness of the need for effective soil health management strategies that not only maintain but enhance soil quality. Innovative tools for soil health management are reshaping plant protection strategies by promoting holistic approaches that focus on maintaining and improving the biological, chemical and physical properties of the soil. These tools range from organic amendments and biofertilizers to advanced diagnostic technologies such as soil microbial profiling, remote sensing, and precision agriculture techniques. Together, they offer a comprehensive framework for addressing soil-related constraints and enhancing plant resistance to pests and diseases.

Agriculture plays a pivotal role in India’s economy, it shares 18.2 % (202324) in country’s GDP at current prices and employs 42.3 % of the Indian workforce, particularly in rural areas, making it one of the largest sources of livelihood (Anon., 2024). With 1.41 billion peoples, India is the world largest populous country and agriculture is crucial for ensuring food security. India’s agricultural exports also significant in boosting its economy through generating foreign exchange of 53 billion dollars in 2023 and contributing around 11.8% to total exports (Statista, 2023). India is the largest producer of milk, millets, banana, sapota, cashew nuts, coconuts, tea, ginger, turmeric, black pepper and second largest producer of wheat, rice, sugar, groundnut and in the world (APEDA, 2024). The sector also provides raw materials for many industries, such as textiles and food processing. India achieved self-sufficiency in food grains after Green Revolution, using introduction of high-yielding varieties (HYVs) of crops, especially wheat and rice, chemical fertilizers, pesticides, and improved irrigation techniques, which dramatically increased crop productivity. The improved productivity also helped to increase farmers’ incomes, raise living standards in rural areas, and support the development of rural infrastructure. Moreover, surplus food production allowed India to build buffer stocks, which could be used to manage food shortages or price fluctuations.

The agriculture sector faces significant challenges in mitigating the detrimental impacts of pests and diseases on crop yield and quality. Traditional methods of pest and disease management often fall short in providing timely and precise interventions, leading to substantial economic losses and environmental consequences. In recent years, the integration of geo-spatial technology has emerged as a promising approach to address these challenges by enabling more accurate monitoring, prediction, and management of pests and diseases.

The integration of geo-spatial technology in pest and disease management within agricultural practices represents a significant stride towards precision agriculture. This chapter delves into the innovative application of geospatial tools in identifying, monitoring, and mitigating pests and diseases, thereby optimizing crop yield and quality while minimizing environmental impact. Beginning with an overview of the challenges posed by pests and diseases in agriculture, the chapter highlights the limitations of traditional methods in effectively addressing these issues. It then explores how geo- spatial technology, encompassing Geographic Information Systems (GIS), remote sensing, and global positioning systems (GPS), revolutionizes pest and disease management by providing real-time, spatially explicit data. The discussion extends to the utilization of satellite imagery and aerial drones for early detection and monitoring of pest infestations and disease outbreaks. Plant disease management technique applicable these days are predominantly relies on hazardous synthetic chemicals that are efficiently deleterious to the human and environment as well. Crop loss every year due to plant pathogen and pest is ranging 30–50%. Nanotechnology, proven advantageous and can offer positive environmental impacts over these harmful chemical pesticides by reducing toxicity, increasing the feasibility of pesticides which are normally baffling in water and improving longevity. This chapter briefly describe the introduction, role and impact of nanotech in management of plant disease. It is considered as modern technology in facing these widespread destructive challenges and causes in controlling in plant disease. In this chapter we tried to summarize the importance of nanotech in sustainable agriculture and application of various nanoparticles (NPs) in the management of plant disease. NPs can be produced by distinct practices, biological and chemical are one of them important methods. Biological method is widely and commercially used. Also, shortly describe the historical background for some NPs types. This chapter briefly focus on the synthesis of some compounds of NPs, for example silver NPs, silver and silica silver etc and their influence on plant disease also briefly describe the working principle of AgNPs against microorganism. NPs may act in accordance with chemical pesticides. Because of microscopic size, NPs have wide scope in virus control in plant. Now day’s biosensors are used for the quick and precise pathogen detection and diagnosis. Regardless of immense scope of NPs application in managing the diseases of plant, there are precise apprehensions, weakness and risk associated with the utility of NPs in agriculture. It is necessary to be figured out on primacy basis prior to trade of NPs in agriculture.

While the fourth agricultural revolution has been sparked by technological advancements, humans still face many challenges in achieving agricultural resilience to meet the demands of the world’s expanding population, including declining croplands, depleting water supplies, the negative effects of climate change, and more. On the one hand, food and dairy products are in increasing demand due to the growing population. On the other hand, an increasing number of variables pose a threat to food security and sustainable food production, including globalization, climate change, scarce land and water resources, unsustainable land management techniques, pests and diseases becoming resistant to chemical pesticides, and the emergence of pathogens that have adapted to new hosts. The integration of geographic information systems (GIS), remote sensing, and artificial intelligence (AI) in geospatial approaches offers a solid foundation for the sustainable management of agricultural resources with the goal of boosting agricultural output. These days, local, regional, and worldwide agricultural production uses these sophisticated instruments more and more. Growers have been more interested in implementing precision agriculture during the past ten years. Precision agriculture is a crop-management method that takes into account the temporal and geographical heterogeneity of soil and crops within a field. Another agricultural technique that is being promoted as a future development that will enable the world’s population to be fed sustainably is precision agriculture. The broad use of geographic methods for agricultural resource management, including crop disease monitoring and pest infestation control, is the main topic of this chapter.

Sustainable agricultural production is endangered by several ecological factors, including biotic & abiotic stresses. Biotic stress is the stress as a result of damage done to an organism by other living organisms. The agents of biotic stress are fungi, bacteria, virus, nematodes, insects, weeds & other plants which reduces quality and production of crops. These challenging environmental factors may have adverse effects on future agriculture production. Breeding resistant cultivars is considered as the best strategy to mitigate the effect of biotic stress. It is durable, economical & environment friendly and provide broad-spectrum resistance. Widely cultivated but susceptible genotypes can be improved by introgression of resistance genes from donor genotype into the background of recurrent genotype by different breeding strategies. In modern agriculture, conventional crop-breeding strategies alone are inadequate for achieving the increasing population’s food demand on a sustainable basis. The advancement of molecular genetics and related technologies are promising tools for the selection of new crop species with resistance genes. Transfer of several genes or quantitative trait loci (QTL) with potential characteristics into a single widely cultivated genotype is possible through the process of marker assisted selection (MAS). Gene pyramiding through MAS have accelerated the development of durable resistant/tolerant lines with high accuracy in the shortest period of time. With marker assisted backcross breeding (MABB), a major gene can be precisely targeted, the genome of the recurrent parent can be recovered fast, and linkage drag can be reduced. Genomic selection (GS) allows selection for multiple traits directly in the genome. These techniques help in identifying plants with two or more genes by employing gene-linked markers without the need for repeated testing in each generation during the development of pyramided lines and hence shorten the time of breeding program.

Food security is paramount for developing any nation reliant upon sufficient crop production. The decline in crop production significantly impacts food security, leading to an imbalance between global food demand and agricultural output. Multiple factors contribute to reduced agricultural productivity, including abiotic factors like water scarcity, poor soils, and unsuitable temperatures, as well as biotic factors such as pests, diseases, and weeds attacking crops. These challenges result in inefficient input utilization and decreased crop yields, ultimately threatening food security. They aid decision-makers in formulating strategies to combat various pests and diseases affecting plant health and food crops, thereby contributing to improved agricultural outcomes and food security. This chapter provides a comprehensive appraisal of existing literature to elucidate the role of geospatial technologies, encompassing Geographic Information System (GIS), remote sensing, and the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS), which are utilized for data collection, mapping, analyzing distribution, and predicting events related to plant health.

Plant disease causes losses estimated for 20-40 per cent of global crop. Climate change has a very complex effect on plant-pathogen interactions, since environmental conditions affect the whole disease triangle: they modify plant susceptibility, the biological cycles of parasites and pathogens, and hostpathogen physiology and interactions. Innovative plant protection strategies in horticultural crops encompass a wide range of techniques and approaches aimed at safeguarding plants from pests, diseases, and environmental stresses in a sustainable and effective manner. These strategies are essential for ensuring the productivity, quality, and resilience of horticultural crops while minimizing negative impacts on the environment and human health.

Climate change, including increased temperature, CO levels, acid rain, and tropospheric O 3 2 , stresses plants and lowers their pathogen response. While higher CO 2 reduces stomata density, acid rain and O weaken cuticle protection, aiding pathogen entry.

The use of conventional pesticides has raised significant concerns due to their adverse effects on human health and the environment. In response, there has been a growing interest in developing safer and more eco-friendly alternatives. This chapter explores the concept of green pesticides as a sustainable solution to pest and disease management. Green pesticides, derived from natural sources or synthesized using eco-friendly methods, offer effective control of pests while minimizing harm to non-target organisms and ecosystems. Green pesticides encompass a diverse range of products and approaches, including botanical extracts, microbial agents, natural predators, and pheromones. Moreover, there is a need to incorporate different cultural practices along with green pesticides to enhance pest control while reducing reliance on chemical inputs. It plays a vital role in various physiological processes such as digestion, metabolism, nutrient transportation, enzymatic and chemical reactions, regulating body temperature, and lubricating joints and organs. Water deprivation can have severe consequences on poultry health, impacting growth, egg production, and even leading to increased mortality if prolonged. Therefore, providing cool, clean water that is free from contaminants is crucial for maintaining poultry health and optimizing farm profitability.

Water Consumption in Poultry

Water consumption in poultry varies under different conditions. Generally, under thermo-neutral conditions, birds will consume approximately twice the amount of water as the amount of feed. However, water intake is influenced by several factors, including environmental temperature, relative humidity, dietary salt and protein levels, the productivity of the birds (growth rate or egg production), and the bird’s ability to reabsorb water in the kidneys. In poultry houses, water consumption tends to be higher in areas with more birds and higher ambient temperatures. Studies indicate that birds prefer water at about 10°C; when water temperatures exceed 27°C, both water intake and daily weight gain are significantly reduced.

Integrated Poultry Farming

Integration refers to the coordination and amalgamation of various stages in poultry production to create a seamless flow of inputs and outputs, reducing overall production costs. This approach ensures that each stage of production, from breeding to marketing, is efficiently managed within a unified system.

• Global Integration: In developed countries, poultry production is highly integrated, encompassing all stages from principal breeding to consumer distribution. This includes broiler farms, hatcheries, feed mills, processing plants, and animal healthcare products, which work together to streamline production and marketing processes.

• Indian Context: In India, integration and contract farming in poultry began with Suguna Poultry Farm Limited in 1991. While this marked the start of integration in broiler production, it did not fully represent the comprehensive integration seen in more developed systems.

• Current Practice in India: Integrators provide essential inputs such as chicks, feed, medicines, vaccines, and technical support. They also handle marketing of the final product. Poultry farmers, operating as contract growers, receive payments based on the weight of broilers or number of eggs produced. Despite these developments, integration within the layer sector remains underdeveloped in India.

Mixed and Integrated Poultry Farming

Mixed farming refers to the practice of cultivating crops and rearing livestock on the same farm, aimed at maximizing economic benefits through the efficient use of resources. This type of farming can be practiced either simultaneously or at different times, depending on the needs and conditions. In India, mixed farming is particularly significant as it typically contributes at least 10% of a farmer’s income from livestock, potentially reaching up to 49%.

Advantages of Mixed Farming

• Maximized Returns: By-products of farm activities, such as crop residues, can be effectively utilized to feed livestock, leading to higher returns.

• Year-Round Employment: Mixed farming provides continuous work opportunities throughout the year, ensuring a steady income.

• Organic chicken farming involves raising chickens in a natural, humane environment outside of a conventional chicken house, feeding them organic feed (free from synthetic fertilizers, pesticides, and GMOs), and avoiding the use of antibiotics or growth hormones.

• The main goal is to produce healthier, environmentally friendly chicken products while ensuring high animal welfare standards.

• Conversion Period: Transitioning a conventional poultry farm to an organic one requires a certain period called the “conversion period.”

• Organic poultry farming necessitates the use of indigenous chicken varieties managed organically, allowing the birds to express their natural behavior.

• Growing Popularity: The demand for organic poultry meat is increasing due to heightened health awareness among consumers. Chicken, in particular, has become a key organic meat due to its shorter production cycle.

Introduction

Poultry diseases pose a significant threat to commercial poultry production, often resulting in substantial economic losses due to high mortality and morbidity. Early diagnosis and effective management of these diseases are crucial, as many diseases share similar symptoms, making timely and accurate identification challenging. Poultry diseases can be broadly classified into bacterial, viral, fungal, protozoan, parasitic, and nutritional deficiency diseases. The following table provides an overview of these diseases, their causative agents, symptoms, and prevention and control measures.

Poultry is one of the fastest-growing industries within agriculture and allied sectors worldwide. This rapid expansion results in the generation of substantial amounts of waste, including poultry manure, dead birds, hatchery wastes, and abattoir wastes. Proper treatment and scientific disposal of these wastes are crucial to avoid significant threats to both avian health and human safety. Unmanaged poultry wastes can lead to the spread of diseases among birds, resulting in considerable economic losses due to mortality and decreased productivity. Additionally, improper waste disposal can contribute to soil and groundwater pollution. Globally, an estimated 400 million chickens are processed weekly, generating a vast amount of waste. For instance, a broiler produces about 0.09 kg of manure daily, while a laying hen produces around 0.18 kg. Effective management of poultry waste requires a comprehensive understanding of its composition and the various physical, chemical, and microbiological processes that influence the fate of potential pollutants, particularly when the waste is applied to land.

Incubation is a critical process in poultry farming, involving the hatching of fertile eggs to produce chicks. This process can be carried out by natural or artificial means. Natural incubation involves placing eggs under a broody hen or duck, allowing the mother bird to provide the necessary warmth and conditions for hatching. In contrast, artificial incubation uses machines called incubators to create the ideal environment for the eggs to hatch. The incubation period, which varies among different poultry species, remains consistent within the same species regardless of whether natural or artificial methods are used.

The reproductive system of a hen is a fascinating and intricate setup designed to produce one of nature’s most perfect foods-the egg. Understanding this system requires a look into its two primary components: the ovary and the oviduct.

The Ovary

The ovary is where the magic begins. A hen typically has two ovaries, but in most cases, only the left ovary develops fully and remains functional. The right ovary, although present, becomes rudimentary and non-functional. The left ovary is responsible for the formation of ova, the initial stage of the egg.

Inside the ovary of a hen are approximately 2000 visible yolk-filled ova. These ova are the potential eggs, each waiting to be developed and released. As a hen matures, these ova progress through various stages of development. The transformation from an immature pullet, which has a small, undeveloped oviduct weighing about 1.1 grams, to a mature pullet ready to lay eggs, involves significant changes. By the time a pullet lays her first egg, her oviduct has grown to weigh around 77.2 grams.

Feeds and Feeding of Poultry

Proper feeding is crucial for the optimal growth, health, and productivity of poultry. It constitutes a significant portion of the total production cost in poultry farming, often accounting for 70-75%. Understanding the different types of feed ingredients and their nutritional contributions is essential for formulating balanced diets that meet the specific needs of poultry at various stages of growth and production.

Different Feed Ingredients Used in Poultry

Poultry feed ingredients are broadly classified into four categories: energy rich feedstuffs, protein-rich feedstuffs, vitamin and mineral sources, and non nutritive feed additives. Typically, commercial poultry feeds are formulated by blending 10-15 different ingredients to provide a balanced diet that meets the nutritional requirements of the birds.

Introduction

The performance of any commercial stock (offspring) depends on the careful selection and scientific breeding of their parent stocks, known as “breeders.” Breeders are the backbone of any commercial poultry operation, as they produce the next generation of chickens, ensuring the continuity and quality of the flock. A breeder farm’s primary purpose is to produce a high number of fertile eggs per layer bird and to increase hatchability through proper hygienic handling of these eggs. Effective breeder farm management encompasses several key areas, including:

• Pure Line Management: Focusing on maintaining and improving specific genetic lines.

• Parent Stock Management: Managing the birds that directly produce commercial layers or broilers.

• Grandparent Stock Management: Managing the generation that produces parent stock, critical for maintaining genetic diversity and quality.

Care and Management of Meat-Type Chickens (Broilers)

Broiler Overview

• Broilers are unisex young chickens raised specifically for meat production. They are typically grown to reach a body weight of 2.0 to 2.5 kg within 5 to 6 weeks, consuming 3.0 to 3.5 kg of feed, resulting in a feed conversion ratio of 1.50 to 1.75.

• Broiler meat is flvored for its tenderness, high-quality protein content, low fat and cholesterol levels, superior flavor, and juiciness.

• The broiler production cycle is divided into three phases based on the birds’ physiological and production needs: broiler starter (0-10 days), broiler grower (11-21 days), and broiler finisher (22 days to marketing).

Brooding is a crucial phase in poultry management that involves the care of day old chicks during the early stages of their lives. Due to their underdeveloped thermoregulatory systems, chicks cannot maintain their body temperature and thus require external warmth. Proper brooding ensures the healthy growth and development of the chicks. The brooder unit typically includes several key components and considerations.

Brooding of chicks

1. Floor brooding

• Floor brooders (canopy/hover brooder or infra-red bulb brooder) are used to keep specific area(s) within the shed at the desired temperature.

• In canopy or hover brooding method, an umbrella-like canopy with two or three incandescent bulbs (40 to 100 W) each, depending on the season) are fixed at the centre, is inverted and hung in such a way that the birds can move freely in and out of it.

• The bulbs, when put on, heat the air and the hot air is trapped by the canopy preventing the escape of hot air thereby providing warmth to the chicks.

• The height of the brooder should be around 6 inches during the first week.

Housing of Poultry

Proper housing is essential for successful poultry farming, as it directly impacts the health, welfare, and productivity of the birds. Well-designed poultry housing not only provides protection and comfort but also ensures efficient management and optimal environmental conditions for the flock. Generally, there are four types of housing systems in poultry, they are

1. Free range or extensive system,

2. Semi-intensive system,

3. Folding unit system and

4. Intensive system.

Desi chickens reared under backyard systems face several constraints such as lower productivity, higher incidence of disease outbreaks, high mortality rates during the early stages of life, and predation. Despite these challenges, the demand for rural backyard poultry is high, particularly among tribal households in rural areas. Small rural producers typically rear colored birds and produce brown-shelled eggs from Desi backyard poultry, catering to the requirements of rural consumers.

To address these issues, there is a need for specific rural poultry production programs. The Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), New Delhi, initiated a project to upgrade indigenous low input technology birds through the All India Coordinated Research Project on Poultry (AICRPP) in various parts of the country. This initiative aims to evolve improved rural backyard poultry breeds.

India’s indigenous poultry breeds play a crucial role in rural livelihoods, providing a sustainable source of nutrition and income. These native breeds are well-adapted to the local environmental conditions, demonstrating remarkable resilience and disease resistance. Despite their lower production potential compared to commercial breeds, their economic value and cultural significance make them indispensable in the rural context.

Indigenous Fowls of India

• India has a population of 217.80 million indigenous (Desi) chickens, representing 25.57% of the total poultry population (851.81 million) in India (BAHS, 2023, GOI).

The cockfighting in India 3,000 years ago indicates their cultural significance. Modern domestic chickens (Gallus domesticus) evolved from the wild red jungle fowl (Gallus gallus), native to India and Southeast Asia.
