Purpose of Growing Microgreens in Space Farming

Microgreens are a perfect dietary ingredient in space because of their special benefits, which have been explained in earlier chapters. In an atmosphere of a spaceship with limited water and electrical power for artificial illumination, their comparatively low light and water consumption are advantageous. Furthermore, because spaceships and shelters have limited capacity, microgreens' tiny size might be advantageous. Given the right sanitization procedures, microgreens may be harvested fresh and consumed right away. Their striking colour and robust flavour may also improve meal presentation and pique astronauts' appetites.

The Madrid System for the International Registration of Marks is governed by two treaties. The first one is he Madrid Agreement, which was concluded in 1891 and revised at Brussels (1900), Washington (1911), The Hague (1925), London (1934), Nice (1957) and Stockholm (1967), and amended in 1979. The other one is the Protocol related to this agreement which was concluded in 1989. The core idea ofintegration is harvesting the complementary and supplementary relationship functions of various enterprises effectively and the art of using the waste of one enterprise to be the input of other enterprise. It is a efficient farming tool for small and marginal farmers to optimize the output per unit of land and investment. Moreover, it is more of organic, eco and soil friendly in nature.

Demand for fodder in intensive livestock farming necessitates the fodder seed production in all the livestock and fodder farms for their own use and sale to needy. The profitability of poultry farming primarily depends on reduction in feed cost, which can be achieved by utilizing optimum concentrations of energy and crude protein (CP) from economically viable and nutritionally balanced feed ingredients. Soya bean meal (SBM) is conventionally used as a source of protein in poultry diet. However, the shortage and escalating cost of this prime protein source makes poultry farming uneconomical in many developing countries. Continuous efforts are, therefore, is on in search of viable alternate protein feed ingredients for SBM. 

Fungi have been known to cause plant diseases in crops and plants of economic importance to humans since time immemorial. Ancient agriculture witnessed these plants’ sufferings but thought it was due to the curse of God on humans. Herbicides are chemical substances that are capable of either killing or injuring plants and so used for elimination of unwanted plants. In Latin, the term ‘herba' means plant and ‘caedere’ means to kill. There are many reasons for the increased use of chemicals for weed control. Shortage and high cost of agricultural labour prevent economic control of weeds by manual and mechanical means. Benefits offered by herbicides include efficient weed control, higher crop yield, better soil, water and energy conservation and higher income.

Counting of Seeds in a Seed Lot

Counting of seeds is essential in order to estimate the number of seeds required for planting in a nursery or direct sowing or where seeds are valuable and are sold or purchased on number basis. However, in practice, it is difficult to count the seeds in the entire lot. Alternately, the whole lot is weighed accurately. From the whole lot, 5-6 small seed samples of 100 g each are randomly selected. The number of seeds in these samples are counted. The average of these samples is then applied to the whole seed lot in order to calculate the number of seeds.

Apricot is an important fruit grown in the dry temperate and mild-hill regions of India. The fruit belongs to the family Rosaceae and genus Prunus. The original apricots are native to China, whereas wild apricot, which is known as ‘Zardalu’, is indigenous to India. Wild apricots are found at a low altitude of 1500 m and as high as 4000 m a s l. The cold hardy trees are hardier than peach and almond and can tolerate winter temperatures as low as -30ºC. They are drought- tolerant and can be grown in a variety of soils, but deep, fertile and well- drained loamy soil with a pH value of 6.0 to 6.8 is suitable for their growth and development. Otology is the branch of medicine concerned with the study of the ear and its diseases. Ear diseases in canines have multiple etiology varying from allergies (food or environmental), ectoparasites, infections (bacteria, malassazia, fungus), endocrine disorders, immunological disorders (autoimmune diseases), foreign material, neoplasms to keratinization disorders. For rational management, correct diagnosis is a pre-requisite. Diagnostic techniques in otology include history, clinical examination including ear canal palpation and visual inspection of ears, imaging (otoscopy, radiography, CT scan, MRI, and ultrasonography) and cytological evaluation of otic contents/ discharge.

Being Independent of China: The Make in India programme should be enforced for many essential agrochemical intermediates, thus becoming China independent.Significant efforts should be made to make this a reality. A well planned, concentrated approach must be developed between the business sec tor and the GOI. Drone

Drones are one of the most innovative new technologies to emerge from the fourth Industrial Revolution. Indian farms may be significantly impacted by drone use in pesticide spraying, hence government cooperation is required for allowing supporting legislative environment.

Advantages

The following are the key advantages of using drones for pesticide spraying:

• Improved agrochemical application efficiency and accuracy. Crop protection products (CPP) are not wasted as a result, which improves pest management and crop output.

• Considerable decrease in operator exposure risk during spray operations.

• Drone-assisted spraying has a field capacity that is nearly 20 times greater in comparison to manual spraying.

• Lower water consumption.

The collected insect samples can be inspected in the laboratory after detaching the antenna and putting them under the microscope. They can also be studied through the permanent slides of different types of antennae with the help of microscope.

Antennae are mobile sensory segmented appendages of the head. They articulate with head in front or between the eyes and arise from antennal socket. The size and shape of antennae varies in different insects. They are used for sensory perception which includes motion and orientation, odor, sound, humidity, and a variety of chemical cues. The Sensilla on the antenna acts as tactile, olfaction, carbon dioxide, temperature, wind, humidity, and sound receptors.

Procedure

Place the specimen in the dissecting pan ventral side up. Use scissors to cut through the exoskeleton‘s ventral side from the head to the posterior end of the abdomen.

Pull the cut sides apart and observe the internal organs. Pin the sides of the insect to the dissecting pan. The observation of the reproductive systems of males and females are as follows:

Female reproductive system

The main functions of the female reproductive system are egg production and storage of male spermatozoa until the eggs are ready to be fertilized. The basic components of the female system are paired ovaries, which empty their mature oocytes (eggs) via the calyces (Calyx) into the lateral oviduct which unite to form the common (median) oviduct.

Requirements: Insecticides of different types

Insecticide chemicals in their “raw” or unformulated state are not usually suitable for pest control. These concentrated chemicals and active ingredients may not mix well with water, may be chemically unstable, and may be difficult to handle and transport. For these reasons, manufacturers add inert substances, such as clays and solvents, to improve application effectiveness, safety, handling, and storage. Inert ingredients do not possess Insecticidal activity and are added to serve as a carrier for the active ingredient. Manufacturers will list the percentage of inert ingredients in the formulation or designate them as “other ingredients” on their labels.

Contents of the kit: DNeasy mini spin columns (2 ml), collecting tubes (2 ml), tissue lysis buffer (ATL), lysis buffer (AL), wash buffer 1 (AW1), wash buffer 2 (AW2), elution buffer (AE) and proteinase-K.

Note: Check for the validity of the product before dilution. Dilute the ATL and AL buffer with molecular gradient ethyl alcohol to a specified volume mentioned on the bottle before starting experiments. Keep a tick mark the bottle cap after dilution with ethyl alcohol for easy identification.

Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) is a laboratory technique, developed by Kary Mullis in the 1980s, used in molecular biology to amplify and replicate a specific segment of the DNA (Mullis, 1990). This reaction in performed in a thermal cycler, involving three main steps: denaturation, annealing and extension.

Principle: PCR is based on the principle of selectively amplifying a specific region of DNA through a series of temperature-controlled cycles. The key components involved in PCR include the target DNA sequence, oligonucleotide primers, DNA polymerase enzyme (Taq DNA polymerase), deoxyribonucleotide triphosphate (dNTPs) (A, T, G, and C), Mg2+ and a thermal cycler apparatus. Initially, the double-stranded DNA is split into single strands under high temperature of 90-95 0C known as the denaturation step. It is followed by cooling the solution to a temperature that allows proper attachment of the oligonucleotide primers to its complementary sites in the strands, known as the annealing step.

1. Introduction

Insects, like many other organisms, rely heavily on their diet for essential nutrients that regulate their growth and development. The quality of food intake significantly impacts various aspects of an insect’s life cycle. Research, such as that conducted by Lee (2015) highlights that consuming a diet lacking in essential nutrients can lead to premature aging, a process known as senescence, in insects. Furthermore, such inadequate nutrition can hasten the rate of mortality as the insect ages. This underscores the critical role that proper nutrition plays in the longevity and overall health of insect populations.

K ration: It is a lightweight packaged ration of emergency foods developed for the U.S. armed forces in World War II (Plate 215).

Kairomone: A chemical substance emitted by one species and especially an insect / plant that possess an adaptive benefit (stimulus for oviposition) to another species.

Kaiser rolls: A round crusty roll often used for sandwiches (Plate 216).

Kalamata/calamata: It is brine cured black olive grown in Greece.

Kallikrein: A hypotensive protease that liberates kinins from blood plasma proteins and is used therapeutically for vasodilation.

Kanji: Clean, black coloured, crisp and sound product of characteristic flavor prepared by full fermentation (chiefly lactic acid fermentation) of black carrot with 2.5% salt, 1% powder mustard and some amount of water.

Kaposi’s sarcoma: It is a neoplastic disease that occurs in individuals coinfected with HIV and a specific herpes virus (species Human herpesvirus 8 of the genus Rhadinovirus), that affects skin and mucous membranes, and is marked by pink to reddish-brown or bluish plaques, macules, papules, or nodules.

Z -distribution: It is a probability density function and a normal distribution that has a mean equal to zero and a standard deviation equal to one and that is used in testing hypotheses about means or proportions of samples drawn from populations whose population standard deviations are known.

Zeatin: Zeatin is a cytokinin C10 H13 N5 O first isolated from the endosperm of Indian corn.

Zeaxanthin: Zeaxanthin is an isomer of lutein occurring in fruits and vegetables (spinach and corn) (Plate 343, 344 and 345).

Zein: Zein is a protein from Indian corn that lacks lysine and tryptophan and is used in making textile fibers, plastics, printing inks, edible coatings, and adhesives and sizes.

Social stratification refers to the hierarchical arrangement of individuals or groups within a society based on various factors such as wealth, power, education, and social status. It involves categorizing people into different layers or strata, each with its own level of privilege, opportunities, and restrictions.

Social stratification, as defined by Lundberg (1968), pertains to the categorization of a population into distinct layers, each characterized by relative homogeneity and marked differences in privileges, restrictions, rewards, and obligations. Cuber (1954) further elucidates this concept, describing social stratification as a pattern of superimposed categories of differential privilege. Each member assumes a formal status and role within this framework. Distinguishing an organization from an institution lies in its focused pursuit of narrowly defined objectives; it constitutes a collective of individuals organized to pursue specific aims. Conversely, an institution encompasses broader and more general objectives, constituting a set of socially endorsed procedures entailing patterned behavior, norms, and regulations. Organizations may function within institutions, thereby contributing to and facilitating the achievement of institutional objectives. The formation and structure of an organization evolve through the delineation of specialized activities, formulation of rules and regulations for operations, establishment of meeting schedules and locations, ultimately rendering the organization a clearly delineated entity with specific objectives, officers, and membership.

17.1 Introduction

Basella is a short-lived but productive leafy vegetable of the tropics. Its resistance to pests and diseases makes it very promising for small-scale production in home and market gardens. The plant is a climbing vine with thick fleshy stem and leaves. They are chopped and cooked as vegetables and has ornamental value too. Its leaves are rich source of vitamin A (3250 IU/100g), protein (1.2%) and rich source of iron (1.4mg/100g). The succulent leaves with petioles and tender leaves are cooked as vegetables. The plant is a climbing vine with thick fleshy stem and leaves. It was cultivated since long in South-East Asia and China, and is now widespread throughout tropical Asia, Africa and America. It is a popular vegetable in Malaysia and the Philippines. The colouring matter present in the red cultivar is reported to have been used in China as a red dye for official seals, as ink. These are used to allay fever and as a mild laxative for pregnant women. A decoction from the plant is used to alleviate labour pains. Boiled leaves are used as a poultice. Flower spikes are sold as vegetable in northern Thailand markets. Flowers have been reported as an antidote to poisons. Fruit juice is used as eye-drops in the treatment of conjunctivitis. Cooked roots are used to cure diarrhoea, while cooked leaves and stems are used as a laxative. The red types of Ceylon spinach are very popular ornamentals and are grown as a pot plant in Europe.

Inroduction

The process of connecting neutral point of 3-phase system to earth (i.e. soil) either directly or through some circuit element is called neutral grounding. Neutral grounding provides protection to personal and equipment. It is because during earth fault, the current path is completed through the earthed neutral and the protective devices (e.g. a fuse etc.) operate to isolate the faulty conductor from the rest of the system. This point is illustrated in Figure 10.1.

Figure 10.1 shows a 3-phase, star-connected system with neutral earthed. Suppose a single line to ground fault occurs in line R at point F. This will cause the current to flow through ground path as shown in Figure1. Note that current f lows from R phase to earth, then to neutral point N and back to R-phase. Since the impedance of the current path is low, a large current flow through this path. This large current will blow the fuse in R-phase and isolate the faulty line R. This will protect the system from the harmful effects of the fault. One important feature of grounded neutral is that the potential difference between the live conductor and ground will not exceed the phase voltage of the system i.e., it will remain nearly constant.

Climate change is a complex and dynamic phenomenon that has significant impacts on agriculture, especially in terms of uncertainty and variability. Agricultural dynamics refer to the various factors that affect agricultural production, including climate, soil, water availability, pests, and diseases, as well as market forces and government policies. Climate change has significant impacts on agricultural dynamics. Variations in temperature, patterns of rainfall, and occurrences of extreme weather can influence crop yields and livestock production in both beneficial and detrimental ways (UCAR, 2021). The effects of climate change on farming can differ based on the geographical location and the specific agricultural practices employed (Wikipedia Contributors, 2019). For example, in some areas, increased rainfall may lead to increased crop yields, while in other areas, droughts may lead to crop failures and loss of income for farmers. Additionally, rising temperatures can cause reduced crop yields and decreased quality of some crops.

Uncertainty is a term used to describe a situation where there is a lack of information, knowledge, or predictability about a particular outcome or event. In agricultural dynamics, uncertainty can refer to a range of factors that can affect the production, distribution, and consumption of agricultural products. One of the most significant sources of uncertainty in agriculture is the weather. The productivity of crops can be significantly influenced by weather conditions, including rainfall and temperature and farmers need to effectively adjust their agricultural practices to adapt to these changing weather patterns (Guntukulaand Goyari, 2020). For example, droughts or floods can reduce crop yields, while frost or hail can damage crops(Lamaoui et al., 2018).

The social, ecological and economic interpretation of climate change by farmers involves understanding the interactions between the natural environment, social systems, and economic factors (Spash, Clive L, 2011). Farmers need to consider these interactions when making decisions about their farming practices. For example, changes in climate can affect the availability of water, soil fertility, and crop yields, which can in turn affect social and economic factors such as food security and income. Farmers need to take into account the wider consequences of their agricultural practices on society and the environment which includes considering the impacts on biodiversity, ecosystems, and human well-being (Warsaw et al., 2021).

Introduction

Among the rice growing countries, India has the largest area (448 lakh ha) followed by china and Bangladesh. Total food grain production in India is estimated at 2813l.7 lakh tonnes. Rice production is estimated at 1156 lakh tonnes (Anonymous, 2010). In India, rice is grown in the state of Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Orissa, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Punjab and West Bengal lead in the area, while West Bengal harvest highest rice production. The average yield per hectare is highest i.e., 5970 kg/ha in the Punjab during 2018-19.

Rice is grown throughout the state except Kachchh and Saurashtra. Some part of the state is growing rice as a drilled, while transplanted rice is taken in south and middle Gujarat. In Gujarat rice occupies about 10.61 per cent of the gross cropped area of the state and accounts for around 25.5 per cent of the food grain production. It is grown on an average about 7.5 to 8.5 lakh hector of land comprising nearly 70 to 80 per cent low land (transplanted) and 15 to 20 per cent of upland (drilled) rice (Anonymous, 2020). During the 2018-19, the yield of kharif rice in Gujarat was around 2247.75 kg/ha. Yield of summer rice was 3130.96 kg/ha and total production of rice in the year of 2018-19 was 1911 tonnes (Anonymous, 2020). During the 2019-20, the yield of kharif rice was 2117.81 kg/ha and yield of summer paddy was 2996.36 kg/ha and total production of rice in the year of 2019-20 was 1929.98 tonnes (Anonymous, 2020).

In Gujarat some districts like Chhotaudepur, Tapi, Navsari have highest rice productivity which covered 1.279 lakh hector area with production and productivity respectively of 3.338 lakh tonne and 2582 kg/ha and some district like Mehsana, Narmada, Panchmahal, North Gujarat etc. have medium to low productivity of paddy. But in some part of North Gujarat like Gandhinagar and Sabarkantha have low productivity of rice.

Fidelity is said to exist in a communication situation when there is no distortion of the message from the time it leaves the source until it is received. The most effective communication occurs when the message transmitted and the message received are identical i.e., when complete fidelity is there. Some communication theorists believe that complete fidelity can never be achieved that no message is ever received exactly as it was intended by the source. This seems likely, since the source and receiver always have different frames of reference. It is clear, however, that the fidelity of any communication can be vastly improved by several methods.

Methods to Improve Fidelity

a) Use several channels of communication

To say the same thing, thus providing a duplication of information. Multiplying the channels used will make communication redundant. A smile, a node of the head, a firm hand shake or embrace and the greeting "Hi! How are you?" often convey the same meaning – meaning that would be conveyed through a single channel or redundantly through more than one.

b) Control the speed of communication

Information is processed by different individuals at different speeds. The rate varies for each situation and for each of the individuals in various situations. In talking casually to a few friends, we might speak very quickly where as in talking to a large group of strangers, we might want to talk more slowly because of the increased possibility for misunderstanding, the intrusion of noise. Whether we should speed up, slow down, or become more succinct (briefly and clearly explained) has to be a function of the feedback we gain. There is no specific rate that is ideal for all – except that rate at which a high degree of fidelity can be attained. It is the rate at which the amount of noise affecting the communication can be minimized. Sender and receiver should be aware of how communication works and interested in achieving the greatest f idelity possible

Extension teaching methods encompass the array of strategies employed to facilitate meaningful communication between instructors and learners within educational settings. In essence, a method denotes a systematic approach to executing tasks or achieving objectives, characterized by a structured progression of steps in a logical and orderly manner.

Thus, an extension teaching method can be construed as a series of progressive steps designed to cultivate environments conducive to effective learning outcomes. As articulated by Leagans (1961), these methods, also referred to as communication methods, serve as instrumental tools for fostering communication channels between instructors and learners. Ensminger (1957) further emphasizes the prerequisite for extension workers to possess comprehensive knowledge of available methods, discern optimal utilization scenarios, and adeptly employ each method to maximize efficacy.

The functions attributed to extension teaching methods are multifaceted

• Facilitating communication channels wherein learners can actively observe, listen, and engage in practical application of the subject matter.

• Provoking cognitive and/or physical responses from learners, thereby stimulating desired actions or reactions.

• Guiding learners through various stages of the teaching-learning process, encompassing attention, interest, desire, conviction, action, and satisfaction.

Classification of Extension Teaching Methods

Wilson and Gallup (1955) initially sought to categorize extension teaching methods based on their utilization and structural characteristics. In a subsequent effort, Bains (1987) endeavoured to refine this classification by considering additional factors such as stages of the learning and adoption processes, categories of adopters, cost implications, required skill levels, time expenditure, and intended behavioural modifications. However, while these classifications contribute to scholarly discourse, their practical utility may be limited. Among the various classification schemes proposed, the most prevalent and pragmatic approach categorizes extension teaching methods based on their intended usage

Audio-visual aids refer to devices that enable both visual and auditory sensory inputs, facilitating enhanced learning and retention compared to using these senses separately. As highlighted in the preceding section, the combination of sight and hearing captures 94% of the audience's attention, underscoring the efficacy of audio-visual aids in extension teaching.

Regardless of the subject or content, having a lesson plan prepares teachers for class by providing detailed guidelines for the session. Introduction

The total population of India according to recent estimates in 2015 is 1.28 billion (Anonymous, 2011). The population in the age-group of 15-34 years in India increased from 353 million in 2001 to 430 million in 2011. More than 50 per cent of India’s current population is below the age of 25 years old and over 65 per cent below the age of 35 years old.

The total population of Chhattisgarh State is 25,545,198 of which male and female are 12,832,895 and 12,712,303. Sex ratio is 991 i.e. for each 1000 male, which is above national average of 940. Literacy rate in Chhattisgarh has seen upward trend and is 71.04 per cent (Anonymous, 2011). Out of total population of Chhattisgarh 23.24 per cent people live in urban regions and 76.76 per cent people live in the villages of rural areas.

Women are the most potent segment of the population of a country. The women of today are the hopes of tomorrow. They are the back bone of the country. The socioeconomic development and prosperity of rural areas depends to a considerable extent, on the type of women living in rural areas, because the rural women have abilities to orient themselves to go along the main stream of the development process. They reflect the national potentiality and represent the life blood of a nation. Development of women determines the development of community and country as a whole. So, the future of the country lies in their hands, what they will become, what role they will play in a democratic society and what they will do, will be dependent to a greater extent on the period between their childhood to adulthood.

In Uttarakhand, majority of the population lives in rural areas and primarily depends on agriculture for their livelihood. In Uttarakhand, only 14.02% area is under cultivation. Out of total 7.66 lakh hectare cultivated area in the state, 4.21 lakh hectare area is rainfed i.e. more than 50 % of the cultivable area is rainfed. The average land holding is 0.68 ha that too is divided into many patches. Rainfed farming in Uttarakhand gets affected by frequent drought like situations and excessive rainfall. Food and nutritional security of people living in hill region depends more on favorable climatic conditions as agriculture and livestock farming are the main occupations. Prevailing low level of soil fertility and increased incidences of pest and disease occurrences has adversely affected the crop production and productivity in hills. Low agricultural productivity has emerged out as an important push factor for out migration of people from hill areas. Traditional hill agriculture is practiced on small and fragmented terraced fields with lack of irrigation facilities, which are uneconomical. Women constitute the main workforce in agriculture as large section of able bodied men have migrated from hills in search of livelihood. They also take care of the cattle, collect fuel wood and fodder from forests, often situated at considerable distance from the villages involving four to five hours of walking both ways, and do all household chores. Their life is an unending drudgery of hard work.

As a large population in the hill region of Uttarakhand depends on agriculture, the problem of malnutrition can be better addressed through nutrition sensitive agricultural interventions specifically designed for women in hills. Local nutritional needs can be met out locally by reviving traditional practices along with amalgamation of science and technology knowledge. Focusing on nutrition helps to build the resilience of rural households. Nutrition sensitive approach was promoted at local level with active participation of women who are mainly responsible for food security of the households.

Voluntary efforts are always focused on the search for an efficient extension mechanism towards a progressive rural development intervention. Extension is otherwise the organized exchange of information and purposive transfer of skills to fulfill the communication gap in transfer of technology process. The goal of extension varies between different extension organizations according to their system of administration and management. As such the voluntary organizations engaged in agriculture & rural development need an incessant backstopping of farm and allied information from the formal Government extension network, so as to complement & supplement the state sponsored extension efforts as an able stakeholder. Hence the study is an attempt to unearth the information flow in voluntary agencies for viable cooperative extension in the times ahead.

Materials and Methods

The study was conducted with 34 numbers of agro-based grass-root voluntary organizations of Kendrapara and Balasore districts of Odisha. One functionary each from the cadre of administrative, supervisory and field staffs were selected as respondents covering total sample size of 102 respondents. Random sampling technique was followed to select voluntary organizations and respondents. Responses were collected on a four point continuum with the use of mean score, pooled mean and rank order for analysis of the data. Results obtained on the information and communication behaviour of voluntary agro- extension workers towards field extension are tabulated and interpreted below.

For example, in some areas, increased rainfall may lead to increased crop yields, while in other areas, droughts may lead to crop failures and loss of income for farmers. Additionally, rising temperatures can cause reduced crop yields and decreased quality of some crops.

Uncertainty is a term used to describe a situation where there is a lack of information, knowledge, or predictability about a particular outcome or event. In agricultural dynamics, uncertainty can refer to a range of factors that can affect the production, distribution, and consumption of agricultural products. One of the most significant sources of uncertainty in agriculture is the weather. The productivity of crops can be significantly influenced by weather conditions, including rainfall and temperature and farmers need to effectively adjust their agricultural practices to adapt to these changing weather patterns (Guntukulaand Goyari, 2020). For example, droughts or floods can reduce crop yields, while frost or hail can damage crops(Lamaoui et al., 2018).

Need of Analytics in Fisheries Management

New technologies are introduced for industrial vessels every day: Fuel and gear sensors, cameras, electronic catch reports etc. There is a global push to track small-scale fishing vessel. In the coming years, fisheries monitoring centers will have to adjust from tracking a few hundred vessels to tens of thousands of vessels, meaning huge quantity of data. To make sense of all this information, it must be properly analysed. The future of fisheries depends on big-data analytics

Real-time catch data could help administrations close a fishing zone once quota is reached. Experimental Designs

Experimental Designs are used widely to compare more than 2 groups, commonly called as treatments. It is very common in agriculture to conduct several experiments, mostly in fields to test various varieties, different levels of inputs, etc. When one is interested in crop modelling, it is necessary to identify the values of several constants, such as input efficiency, growth periods, growth rates, etc. Instead of guessing these values, it would be more appropriate to conduct experiments to derive these values empirically, which can improve the modelling efforts. The principles of experimentation were given by Sir R.A. Fisher during 1920’s, which are still relevant and found in every scientific research namely, (i) Randomization, (ii) Replication and (iii) Local Control. The following sections introduce some of the commonly used terms in Experimental Designs:

Factor: Variables which are set/considered by the experimenters in any experiment. Examples of factors are: Nitrogen, Varieties etc. Level: The various values of a particular factor considered in the experiment. Examples of levels are: Rates of nitrogen applied, different varieties considered in the experiments.

Treatment: The levels of one or more variables (Factors) set/considered by the experimenters.

Note that in many experiments, the number of variables (i.e. factors) considered may be one only.

There has been a surge of data in every field of research due to advancements in information technology. Data collection and storage has become much easier and cheaper in recent years. This voluminous data needs to be systematically stored for quick retrieval, process and to find useful patterns. Data mining techniques help in deriving useful patterns from data. These techniques which are also called as machine learning techniques majorly categorized as classification, clustering and association rule mining methods. Classification is a supervised learning method which needs labeled dataset for model building and prediction purposes. Clustering and association rule mining methods do not require labeled dataset and hence they are referred as unsupervised learning methods.

Clustering aims at grouping the objects based on a set of measured variables where similar objects are assigned to one group. For example, let us say, if we have collected information on 50 fish pond parameters (50 variables) and we wish to find the groups in terms of pond management (like well managed to poorly managed), with cluster analysis, we can group the ponds based on pond variables. In the process of clustering, each pond is assigned to one of the groups made. The question is how many natural clusters present in the data as in many cases we would not be getting perfect clusters of disjoint sets. We can achieve better accuracies in cluster formation only by trial and error. Good clustering criteria are to see that there is minimum with-in cluster variations and maximum between cluster variations.

Cluster analysis has several applications in fisheries research. It could be used to group fish stocks from different regions, categorise ponds based on their technical efficiencies, identify the farm clusters with high disease risk, group farmers based on their preferences, agro zoning based on climatic variables and culture practices. Cluster analysis is also applied in fish bioinformatics to group the similar sequences.

Economists consider a producer as an income or profit maximiser. In our context, it may mean enhancement of fisheries contribution to the GDP, increased fish production, Nutritional security of those who need it most, not just those who can afford to pay for it improvement in the livelihood conditions of the stakeholders, augmenting exports to net more foreign exchange, growth with social equity or inclusive growth, etc. Realisation of a goal or target depends on development and enforcement of necessary policy strategies for which a reliable data base is inevitable. Analytical trends of the past data could help to project future trend which could indicate feasibility of the envisioned goal. Here, an outline of some of the Methodological issues in Fisheries data collection is provided.

The Resource Endowments

Fisheries is a sunrise sector in India, in terms of food and nutritional security, employment and income generation. India is the 3rd largest fish producer and the 2nd in aquaculture production, globally. It contributes about 1% of national GDP and 5 % of agriculture GDP. The exports of marine products account for about 5% of total Indian exports in 2018-19. The estimated fish production during 2017-18 was 12-59 million tones (mt). It was 10.14% increase over 11.43 million t in 2016-17. Inland fisheries grew at 14.05% while marine fisheries rose at 1.73% in 2017-18. Fisheries sub-sector provides livelihood support and gainful employment to 14 million people. Many more may be employed now as available data is yet to be updated.

The tissue/cell culture lab has the requirement of maintaining an aseptic environment. There are several aspects to the design of good tissue culture facilities. Ideally, cell culture work should be conducted in a single-use facility. Therefore, cell culture lab unit should be separated from the rest of the lab area. It can be either separate lab or a closed partition in a big lab. All new material should be handled as ‘quarantine’ material in a separate area, and materials known to be free of contaminants should only be allowed inside the culture room. In addition, the work surfaces should be thoroughly cleaned and disinfected between activities.

For most of the work involving non-infectious primary culture and cell lines, the laboratory should be designated to at least BSL2 facility. The location of the Biosafety cabinet is the most important point to consider. When operated correctly, the cabinet will provide a clean working environment, whilst protecting the operator from aerosols. Environmental monitoring with Tryptone Soy Broth agar settle plates inside the biosafety cabinet is a good indicator of the cleanliness of a cabinet. There should be no growth of bacteria and fungi after 3-5 days of incubation.
