7.1. Introduction
The concept of consumer’s surplus was first introduced by Alfred Marshall. When a consumer plans to buy a commodity, they assess the utility they will gain from its consumption. A rational consumer always compares the utility derived from a good with the price they must pay for it. If the utility exceeds the price, the consumer chooses to buy it; otherwise, they do not. The excess utility gained over the price paid is known as consumer’s surplus.

Suppose a consumer wants to buy a shirt and is willing to pay `250 for it, but the actual price is only `200. In this case, the consumer gains a surplus of `50. This difference, known as consumer’s surplus, represents the extra benefit the consumer receives from the purchase.

9.1. Production
Production means creation of value in the goods, i. e. creation of utility. Production activity helps in transforming a set of inputs into goods and services. It essentially means transforming of one set of goods into another. The output generated from production possesses greater utility than the combined inputs used in the production process. The inputs that are utilized in production of goods may be provided by the nature and/ or by other industries.
9.2. Factors of Production
These mean the production resources required to produce a given product. Fraser defined factor of production as “a group or class of original productive resources”. The factors of production have been traditionally classified as land, labour, capital and organization.
Land
According to Marshall, land means “the materials and forces which nature gives freely for man’s aid, in land and water, in air and light and heat.” In Economics the term land has a very broad meaning. It includes all free gifts of nature available to mankind viz., air, water and land. It includes all types of land surfaces such as mountains, valley, plains, forests etc. It includes all types of water resources such as rivers, oceans, etc. Thus the concept of land includes all natural resources on, above and below the earth’s surface.

10.1. Introduction
In the production process, the farmers combine the required input factor in various proportion. This type of usage of input by the farmer gives way for the operation of law of returns. In the production process, when the single input factor is varied keeping other required factor constant, the relationship take place between single variable input and the consequent output pertain to either one or a combination of the following relationship.
1. Law of increasing returns;
2. Law of constant returns; and
3. Law of decreasing returns.
10.1.1. Law of increasing returns
According to the law of increasing returns, each additional (or marginal) unit of input leads to a proportionally larger increase in output compared to the previous unit. In other words, the productivity of inputs rises as more units are employed.

ICAR’s Models for Integrated Fish Farming
The Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) has played a leading role in advancing Integrated fish farming (IFF) models that effectively combine aquaculture with agriculture and animal husbandry. These models aim to improve resource efficiency, boost overall farm productivity, and ensure sustainable practices.
• Rice–Fish–Duck System (ICAR-NRRI, Cuttack): This model combines paddy cultivation with fish and duck rearing. Ducks act as natural weed and pest controllers while fertilizing the fields with their droppings. Fish support nutrient cycling and also help manage weeds. The system enhances rice yield, produces fish and duck meat/eggs, and optimizes water and land use.
• Fish–Makhana–Water Chestnut System (ICAR-RCER, Patna): Widely adopted in Bihar, this model integrates fish farming with the cultivation of makhana (fox nut) and water chestnut. The aquatic crops provide natural habitat and supplemental feed for fish. This integration improves pond utilization and generates multiple income streams for farmers.

INTRODUCTION
The hydraulic power steering system operates by using pressurized power steering fluid to reduce steering effort. The system is powered by a pump, driven by an engine accessory drive or serpentine belt. The pump sends high-pressure fluid through a hose to the input side of the power steering gear-control valve. The high pressure applied to the control valve assists the driver in turning the front wheels. The power steering fluid is stored in a reservoir, and the fluid returns from the steering gear at a much lower pressure to maintain the proper level in the reservoir.
In a hydraulic power steering system, the fluid is continuously pumped, and the system is influenced by engine speed. High RPM results in high-pressure output, while lower RPM causes low-pressure output. To ensure constant pressure, the power steering pump uses a bypass valve, which regulates the pressure regardless of the engine speed. This helps maintain consistent performance.
ELECTRO-HYDRAULIC POWER STEERING
These systems employ a brushless electric motor to drive the hydraulic power steering pump instead of an engine driven accessory drive or serpentine belt. This system operates the same and provides the same feel of a conventional hydraulic power steering system.
Electric Power Steering or Motor-Driven Power Steering
This system eliminates hydraulics and pressurized fluid from the system. When the driver turns the steering wheel, a brushless bi-directional permanent magnet motor connected to the steering gear or steering column turns the front wheels. The history of the guava fruit can be traced back thousands of years, and it has a rich cultural and botanical significance. The guava fruit (Psidium guajava) is believed to have originated in the tropical regions of Central America, particularly in present-day Mexico and neighboring countries. Archaeological evidence suggests that guavas were cultivated and consumed by the indigenous people of these regions as early as 2000 BCE. From there, the fruit spread to other parts of South and Central America, the Caribbean, and eventually to other tropical and subtropical regions around the world. Guava holds significant cultural importance in various ancient civilizations. In the Mayan culture, guavas were considered sacred and symbolized fertility (Arévalo- Marín et al., 2021). The fruit was also believed to have healing properties, leading to its use in traditional medicine. The Spanish and Portuguese explorers played a pivotal role in spreading guavas to other parts of the world during the Age of Exploration. They brought the fruit back to Europe, Africa, and Asia, where it quickly adapted to the tropical and subtropical climates. Guava cultivation in Asia can be traced back to the 16th century. It is believed that the Portuguese introduced guavas to India and Southeast Asia (Hussain et al., 2021). The fruit’s popularity grew rapidly in these regions due to its adaptability to various soil and climate conditions. Guavas were introduced to Hawaii in the early 19th century. The fruit quickly naturalized and became a prominent part of the Hawaiian diet. Today, Hawaii is known for its delicious pink-fleshed guavas, and guava-based products such as jams and juices are popular exports (Shigeura & Bullock, 1983). Guava has been recognized for its nutritional and medicinal properties since ancient times. It is a rich source of vitamin C, dietary fiber, and various essential nutrients. Traditional medicine in many cultures used guava leaves, fruit, and roots for treating ailments such as diarrhea, dysentery, and respiratory issues. Guava fruit and trees have also found their way into ancient literature and folklore. In some Indian epics and poems, the guava tree is celebrated for its lush greenery and sweet fruits, symbolizing prosperity and abundance (Reguengo et al., 2022).

2.1 Relatives of Guava
The Psidium guajava complex is a group of closely related species that share certain characteristics, making them distinct from other species in the genus. These characteristics include venation pattern, seed number and size, indumentum pattern, and calyx structure. The complex consists of several species, including Psidium guajava, P. guineense, P. guyanense, P. nutans, P. rostratum, and P. rutidocarpum. Their distribution ranges from Mexico to northern Argentina and Uruguay, including the Antilles. A molecular phylogenetic analysis indicates that P. guajava and P. guineense are sister taxa, but the relationships with the other species are not clear due to insufficient representation in the analysis. Psidium guajava and P. rutidocarpum share a unique characteristic of leaves with numerous lateral veins, which is not found in other Psidium species. While P. guajava is a widespread weedy species, P. rutidocarpum is found in a more limited range in natural habitats in the upper Amazon of Peru. Psidium guineense, P. guyanense, and P. nutans are very similar to each other and could be considered as one large variable species, but they can be distinguished using specific characters described in a key proposed by Landrum in 2021. Psidium rostratum is geographically separated from other members of the P. guajava complex. It shares certain characteristics, such as flower size, closed calyx, and placenta, with other species in the complex but differs in having fewer ovules and larger seeds. Its venation is similar to that of P. guineense, which is why it is tentatively assigned to this complex (Gangappa et al., 2022).

Guava is a fast growing evergreen shrub or small tree that can grow to a height of 3-10 m. It has a shallow root system. Guava produces low drooping branches from the base and suckers from the roots. The trunk is slender, 20 cm in diameter, covered with a smooth green to red brown bark that peels off in thin flakes. Young twigs are pubescent. The leaves grow in pairs, opposite each other. The leaf blade is elliptic to oblong in shape, 5-15 cm long x 3-7 cm broad, finely pubescent and veined on the lower face, glabrous on the upper face. The flowers are white in colour, about 3 cm in diameter, solitary or in 2-3 flower clusters borne at the axils of newly emerging lateral shots. The fruit is a fleshy, pyriform or ovoid berry that can weigh up to 500 g. The skin colour is yellowish to orange. The flesh can be white, yellow, pink or red, sour to sweet, juicy and aromatic. The fruit contains a variable number of seeds (about 3-5 mm long) and its mesocarp is characterized by the presence of small (0.1 mm) and hard fibrous structures called stone cells (sclereids), which may cause damage to processing machinery (Toma & Luchian, 2019).
3.1 Reproductive Biology and Pollination
Research on breeding systems in Psidium focuses primarily on P. guajava, which is an allogamous species characterized by an open pollination reproductive cycle. Nevertheless, self-pollination can occur. Bee-pollination, in which pollen is the sole reward, is the dominant pollination system in Psidium. Species of the superfamily Apoidea are important pollinators of both P. guajava and P. guineense. Both species are also pollinated by the European honeybee, Apis mellifera. Psidium guyanense, P. nutans, P. rostratum, and P. rutidocarpum lack comprehensive studies of their breeding systems, pollination, and dispersal (Sarkar & Sarkar, 2022).

7.1 Introduction
A nursery is a place where plants are cultivated and grown until they reach a usable size. Nursery management has evolved into a commercial venture, with different types of nurseries including retail, wholesale, and private nurseries. Retail nurseries sell planting materials to the general public, while wholesale nurseries supply other nurseries and commercial landscape gardeners. Private nurseries cater to the needs of specific institutions or organizations. Since many horticultural crops are propagated in nurseries, the production of quality planting materials is vital, especially for orchardists whose success largely depends on the quality of these materials, as most fruit crops are perennial. To be a successful grower, it is crucial to consider several factors, including soil and climatic conditions, location, water availability, financial support, labor availability, marketing facilities, demand, and transportation systems. However, the production of quality planting materials plays a pivotal role in determining the success of horticultural ventures, as planting materials form the foundation of the orchard (Chadha, 2001; Singh & Negi, 2010).
7.2 Demand for Seedlings and Seeds in India
The availability of quality planting materials is one of the most important factors in the development of a sound horticulture sector. In India, there is an immense demand for quality seedlings and seeds at lower costs, offering scope for large-scale planting. The demand for quality planting materials exists across the country, as these materials contribute to sustainable fruit production systems (Swaminathan, 2007).
7.3 Seedling Supply Chain
The primary suppliers of perennial tree seedlings are departmental/ government and industrial nurseries, which produce seedlings and vegetative propagules for their own needs, as well as for public distribution to meet raw material demands. Farmers primarily produce vegetable and ornamental seedlings, benefiting from the availability of improved seeds and the low input requirements. The fundamental idea behind integrated nutrient management, or INM, is to optimize plant nutrient supply in order to maintain the targeted crop yield. It entails using chemical fertilizers, organic manure, and biofertilizers in the right amounts according to the land use system and the environmental, social, and economic circumstances. Vermicomposting is a natural fertilizer that is devoid of chemicals and made from organic wastes that decompose. It is an environmentally benign process. Beneficial microflora, including those that fix nitrogen, dissolve phosphorus, and break down cellulose, are abundant in vermicompost. In addition to having earthworm cocoons, which boost the number and activity of earthworms in the soil, it also has important vitamins, enzymes, and hormones like auxin and gibberellins, which improve the soil’s structure, texture, aeration, and ability to hold water while preventing soil erosion. Additionally, because of its high organic matter content, it increases the soil’s capacity to retain water, improves the macro- and micronutrient quality of the soil, and encourages greater root development and nutrient absorption. Biofertilizers provide soil with nutrients by utilizing the body’s natural mechanisms of fixing nitrogen, phosphorus solubilization, and growth-promoting material production. It can symbiotically link with plant roots because it is a living entity. Complex organic material could be simply and safely converted into a simple chemical by the involved microorganisms, making it easier for plants to absorb them. Long-term microorganism function leads to an increase in soil fertility. It preserves the soil’s natural habitat. In addition to increasing plant development, it substitutes artificial nitrogen and phosphate by 25% and enhances crop output by 20% to 30%. Guava (Psidium guajava L.) is an important tropical and subtropical fruit crop, valued for its high nutritive content, processing potential, and adaptability to diverse agro-climatic conditions. In recent years, there has been a growing shift from conventional chemical-intensive farming towards eco-friendly and sustainable production systems. Organic farming in guava has gained importance due to its ability to enhance soil fertility, improve fruit quality, and reduce environmental degradation. The integrated use of organic manures, biofertilizers, and reduced chemical fertilizers has been shown to optimize yield while maintaining ecological balance.
12.2 Role of Organic Manures
Farmyard manure (FYM), vermicompost, poultry manure, and neem cake are commonly used organic amendments in guava cultivation. These materials improve soil physical properties, enhance microbial activity, and release nutrients gradually. Muhammad et al. (2000) reported that a combined application of FYM with NPK fertilizers significantly increased fruit size, weight, and total yield in guava. Similarly, Ebrahiem and Mohamed (2000) observed that FYM application in ‘Balady’ mandarin improved fruit set and yield, demonstrating the broad utility of organic amendments across citrus crops.

    16.1 Introduction
Guava (Psidium guajava L.) is one of the most important tropical fruit crops, valued for its vitamin C content, nutraceutical compounds, and adaptability to diverse agro-climatic conditions. However, guava production faces problems of seedling variability, prolonged juvenile phase, susceptibility to wilt and anthracnose, and poor success rates of vegetative propagation (Singh et al., 2022).
Biotechnological tools, ranging from micropropagation to molecular diagnostics, provide solutions to these challenges. These methods complement conventional horticultural practices by ensuring clonal fidelity, enabling rapid multiplication of elite genotypes, characterizing genetic diversity, and offering prospects for disease resistance and quality improvement (Kumari et al., 2021; Mishra et al., 2020).
16.2 Micropropagation: Commercial-scale Clonal Propagation
Micropropagation is the most widely used biotechnology tool in guava. Nodal segments and shoot tips cultured on Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium with cytokinins such as benzylaminopurine (BAP) can produce multiple shoots, while rooting is induced using auxins like indole-3-butyric acid (IBA) (Singh et al., 2022).
Juvenile explants generally perform better, and the addition of antioxidants (ascorbic acid, polyvinylpyrrolidone) or activated charcoal reduces tissue browning. Plants require careful acclimatization under mist chambers before field planting. Micropropagation ensures large-scale, disease-free, uniform planting material for high-density orchards (Singh et al., 2022).

The Myrtaceae family tree, the guava (Psidium guajava L.), is grown in tropical climates all over the world and bears fruit in the summer, autumn and winter. Guavas are widely grown in Mexico, Brazil, India, and other countries. They have climacteric respiration patterns. Harvested at different maturities, it frequently causes early senescence because to its quick ripening within 1-2 days after physiological maturity. The fruit has notable losses (20–30%) during handling, storage, and transportation because to its thin peel, high moisture content, and inadequate post-harvest infrastructure. Though processing levels in the nation are still low, effective post-harvest management techniques can reduce these losses, improve fruit availability, and even increase processing. Product quality may be increased by better preservation methods and adherence to hygienic guidelines (Basak & Chakraborty, 2020).
18.1 Maturity Indices
The ideal consumption stage, which varies depending on the type, determines when to harvest guava. Fruits should be collected at the mature, hard stage before any symptoms of ripening if they are to be consumed when still green. Harvesting for those intended to be soft and ripe happens when a noticeable green to yellow colour shift and initial softening are observed. Postponing harvesting to a more mature stage might lead to a rise in fruit fly infection. In green fruit, the Soluble Solids Content (SSC) varies from 3% to over 10%, whereas the Titratable Acidity (TA) varies from 0.2 to 1.5%. Variations in seasonal acidity are possible, but cultivar sweetness and acidity are distinct (Ghosh & Gupta, 2015).
18.2 Harvesting
Harvesting guava, a climacteric fruit, is ideal when mature but still firm, ensuring excellent taste and distinctive flavor upon ripening, showcasing the unique characteristics of each cultivar. While seedling guavas may bear fruit after 5–6 years, grafted or air-layered plants exhibit precocity, yielding the first crop at 2 to 3 years of age. Individual hard and firm fruits are picked regularly (Reddy & Kumar, 2019).

This study examines how various socio-economic variables affect migration distance and happiness among toto-pullers in farm ecology, analysing 15 independent variables and their relationships with six dependent variables. The distribution patterns show moderate variability in family size, income, and material possessions, with notable variability in factors such as migration costs and water scarcity. Correlation analyses reveal that higher education, income, and land holdings are negatively correlated with migration distance, while larger family size, older average age, and better housing conditions correlate positively with longer migration distances. Regression analysis indicates that family size significantly influences migration distance, while higher education levels are associated with shorter distances. Stepwise regression confirms family size as a key predictor, explaining 20.7% of the variance in migration distance. Path analysis highlights that larger families directly increase migration distance, whereas higher education leads to shorter distances. In terms of happiness, material possession, house type, and income from livestock are positively correlated, suggesting that better living conditions significantly enhance happiness. Conversely, higher migration costs and lower education and income levels are negatively correlated with happiness. Overall, the findings underscore the critical roles of family size, socio-economic conditions, and material factors in shaping migration patterns and happiness, indicating areas for targeted interventions to improve migration outcomes and overall well-being among toto-pullers. The stepwise regression analysis identifies several key predictors of unhappiness, migration benefits, push factors, and pull factors. Material possession (x7) emerges with a negative coefficient of -0.224 and a t-value of -1.725, suggesting that while higher material possessions are somewhat linked to reduced unhappiness, this effect is not statistically significant. In contrast, total annual income from livestock per capita (x12) significantly reduces unhappiness, with a coefficient of -0.360 and a t-value of -3.826, reflecting a robust negative relationship. Family size (x1) also significantly influences unhappiness, with a coefficient of -0.299 and a t-value of -2.537, indicating that larger family sizes are associated with greater unhappiness. This research can shed light on how frequent relocations, disruptions in schooling, and varying educational standards impact children’s learning experiences, academic performance, and overall growth. Understanding these challenges can offer valuable insights into the specific obstacles faced by mobile families, such as inconsistencies in curriculum, interruptions in social and emotional development, and difficulties in accessing educational resources. Breeding of coldwater and hill stream fish involves managing their natural reproductive cycles and, in some cases, using artificial methods to enhance breeding success. This includes collecting brood stock, selecting ripe spawners, and ensuring suitable environmental conditions for spawning and larval development. The cold water fishes adopted to live below 10°C to 20°C temperature. The upland water at high altitudes of mountains and the spring water at low altitude in temperate regions remain cooler than the rest and the cold water fishes flourish in these region. Such water bodies comprising several hill streams, rapids, pools, lakes and reservoirs are abundantly found in the Himalayan region and in the Deccan plateau region of peninsular India. These are either fed by melting snow and the springs as in north or by the rain water as in Deccan plateau. During recent years, there has been growing realization for development of cold water fisheries in India, since the production from cold water is neglisable in comparison to total inland catch. The trout hatchery established in Kashmir is one of the potential sources from where the brown trout have been transplanted to the upland waters of Jammu, Kashmir, Kullu, Simla, Kangra, Nainital, Shilong and Arunachal. Other hatcheries constructed at Nilgiris and Kerala.
INDIGENOUS COLD WATER FISHES
The primary coldwater fish species native to the mountainous regions of India include Mahaseer, Snow Trout, and the Indian Hill Trout.

Biogas typically comprises 60-65% methane (CH4), 35-40% carbon dioxide (CO2), and 0.5-1.0% hydrogen sulfide (H2S), along with traces of water vapor. It is approximately 20% lighter than air and has an ignition temperature of 650-750°C. The calorific value of raw biogas is around 20 MJ/m³ (4,713 kcal/m³).
Unlike Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), biogas cannot be converted into a liquid state under normal temperature and pressure. The critical temperature for methane liquefaction is -82.1°C at a pressure of 4.71 MPa, making liquefaction complex and energy-intensive. However, biogas can be upgraded by removing impurities like CO2 and H2S and compressing it into cylinders for use in three-wheelers, cars, pickup vans, or stationary engines at remote locations.
Since Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) technology is already wellestablished, upgraded biogas (also called biomethane) which has similar composition and energy content can serve as a direct substitute for CNG in all its applications. The calorific value of upgraded biogas (with CO2 removed) increases to around 34 MJ/m³, compared to 20 MJ/m³ for raw biogas.
Techniques for Biogas Purification
To enrich biogas and increase its methane content, various purification methods are employed:
1. Water Scrubbing
This physical absorption process involves pressurizing biogas and feeding it into the bottom of a packed column, while water is introduced at the top. The CO2 and H2S dissolve into the water as it flows downward, while methane rises and is collected. The water used can

• Temporal and Spatial Variability: The dynamics of livelihood can change dramatically over time and between Bengal’s many regions. The generalizability of results and suggestions may be limited by the nonuniform application of research findings across domains.
• Implementation Difficulties: Implementation issues with well-designed policies and initiatives can include local opposition, corruption, and ineffective bureaucracy. These difficulties may impede the efficacy of interventions and make evaluating their effects more difficult.
• Response Variability and Adaptation: Rural communities’ responses to changes in the economic, environmental, or social spheres can vary greatly. Adaptation techniques can be influenced by local cultural norms, resource availability, and unique household situations, making it challenging to create universally applicable solutions.
• Future Uncertainties: The trajectory of livelihood transitions may be impacted by uncertainties about future technical advancements, economic situations, and the effects of climate change. Accurately predicting these changes is intrinsically difficult, which may compromise the validity of subsequent estimates and suggestions.

pH is defined as the negative logarithm of hydrogen ion concentration. The amount of the acidic gas CO2 significantly affects the pH of natural water body. Fish have usually blood pH levels of 7.4, but little deviation has been observed, perhaps 7.0 to 8.5pH range is more suitable for the growth and reproduction of the fish. However, pH range 4.0 to 6.5 and 9.0 to 11.0 cause fish death in water pH less than 4.0known as acidic death point or even more than 11.0 known as alkaline death point. The pH of fresh water more fluctuating as compare to sea water due to release and consumption of CO2 and O2 respectively by bacterial oxidation and respiration. However, the pH of marine water often constant at 7.8-8.3 due to presence of buffer like HCO3-, CO2 -, CO3-2 etc.
Principle
The estimation of hydrogen (H+) ion activity through sensing electrode. Electrode composed of a narrow glass bulb with fixed concentration of HCI solution inside it. A wire made of an Ag-AgCI placed in to the bulb which work as electrode to fix voltage. Potential difference forms between the solution in the glass bulb and the sample solution when the electrode immersed into solution.

Dissolved oxygen (DO) refers to oxygen gas that is dissolved in water. Fish are able to absorb oxygen directly from the water into their bloodstream using gills. There are three main sources of oxygen in the aquatic environment: 1) direct diffusion from the atmosphere; 2) wind and wave action; and 3) photosynthesis. Oxygen depletion refers to low levels of DO and may result in fish mortality. A concentration of 5 mg/L DO is recommended for optimum fish health. Sensitivity to low levels of dissolved oxygen is species specific, however, most species of fish are distressed when DO falls to 2-4 mg/L. Mortality usually occurs at concentrations less than 2 mg/L. If fishes gulfing on the water surface and also show the low swimming in the water it indicates deficiency of dissolved oxygen in pond.

The biochemical oxygen demand is a chemical procedure for determining the amount of dissolved oxygen needed by aerobic organisms in a water body to break the organic materials present in the given water sample at certain temperature over a specific period of time. BOD of water or polluted water is the amount of oxygen required for the biological decomposition of dissolved organic matter to occur under standard condition at a standardized time and temperature. Usually, the time is taken as 5 days and the temperature is 20°C. microbes

Principle
The test measures the molecular oxygen utilized during a specified incubation period for the biochemical degradation of organic material (carbonaceous demand) and the oxygen used to oxidize inorganic material such as sulfides and ferrous ion. It also may measure the amount of oxygen used to oxidize reduced forms of nitrogen (nitrogenous demand).
Procedure
Fill two BOD bottles with sample (or diluted sample); the bottles should be completely filled.

Chemical oxygen demand (COD) is measurement of oxygen demand of waste in terms of the total quantity of oxygen required for oxidation of the waste to carbon dioxide and water. This test is based on the fact that all the organic compounds, with few exceptions, can be oxidized The test is based on the fact that all organic compounds, with a few exceptions, can be oxidized by the action of strong oxidizing agents under acid conditions. Organic matter + Oxidizing agent = CO2 + H2O. The major advantage of COD test is the short time required for evaluation. The determination can be made in about 3 hours rather than the 5-days required for the measurement of BOD
Principle
The oxidizing agents like potassium permanganate and potassium dichromate is usually used to determine COD. Potassium permanganate is selective in the reaction like it reacts with carbonaceous on the other hand it shows nonreactive with nitrogenous matter. Estimating of COD with any method, oxidizing agent must be present to ensure that organic matter is oxidized completely. The organic matter and oxidisable inorganic substances present in water or wastewater get oxidised completely by standard potassium dichromate (K2Cr2O7) in the presence of H2SO4 to produce CO2 + H2O.The excess K2Cr2O7 remaining after the reaction is titrated with ferrous ammonium sulphate [Fe(NH4)2 (SO4)2]. The dichromate consumed gives the 02 required for oxidation of the organic matter.

Fish excrete Ammonia, is a byproduct from protein metabolism and bacteria break down organic waste such as discarded food, faeces, dead planktons, sewage, and so on. When ammonia is unionized form (NH3) is extremely dangerous; yet when ammonia ionized form (NH4 +) it is harmless; both forms are known as total ammonia. Fish suffering from ammonia toxicity often”become lethargic and frequently emerge near the surface gasping for oxygen. common effects of ammonia in the range >0.1mg/l include Gill damage, breakdown of mucous-producing membranes, “sub-lethal” effects like reduced growth, poor (FC) feed conversion, and reduced disease resistance at concentrations lower than lethal concentrations, osmoregulatory imbalance, and kidney failure.
Principle
When Ammonia react with alkaline Nessler reagent (K2HgI4 or 2KI + HgI2) it produces a yellowish-brown coloured compound. Pretreatment with ZnSO4 and NaOH precipitates Ca, Mg, Fe and sulphide, which form turbidity and apparent colour. Addition of ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid, EDTA (before nessler’s reagent) or Rochelle salt solution prevents precipitation of residual Ca and Mg in presence of the alkaline Nesslers’s reagent.

Sulfate can have harmful effects on aquatic life in freshwaters, sulfate cause osmotic stress or specific ion toxicity in aquatic organisms, especially in soft waters where Ca2+ and Mg2+ concentrations are low. Egg fertilization and early embryonic development were the most sensitive developmental stages of whitefish to sulfate (Karjalainen et al., 2021).
Sulphate (SO4 2-) may be estimated by either turbidimetric or gravimetric methods (APHA, 1995)
1. Turbidimetric method is more applicable in the range of 1- 40 mg Sulphate (SO4 2-)/ L
2. Gravimetric method is suitable if the concentration of Sulphate (SO4 2-) is above 10 mg/ L
Turbidimetric Method (Range 1 - 40 mg/L of sulphate) Principle
Sulphate ion (SO4 2-) precipitated with barium chloride (BaCl2) in an acetic acid medium in order to form crystals of barium sulphate (BaSO4).
BaCl2 + SO4 2-+ BaSO4 (precipitate)
The formation of these crystals is increased in the presence of an acetic acid solution containing sodium acetate, potassium nitrate, acetic acid and magnesium chloride. The suspended barium sulphate (BaSO4) is measured by spectrophotometer and concentration of sulphate (SO4 2-) is determined by comparison of the reading with a standard curve. Minimum detectable concentration is approximately 1 mg (SO4 2-) / L.

The total plate count (TPC) is also called the Bacterial plate count (BPC), aerobic plate count, standard plate count (SPC), total viable count (TVC) or mesophilic count represents the number of colony forming units (CFU) per g (or per mL) of growing microorganisms such as bacteria, yeast and mold on a nonspecific solid bacteriological growth medium under the specified conditions. Temperature, incubating time, medium type, and any other conditions used in the enumeration varies upon reference standards and laboratory objectives. Laboratories participating in the program choose their own routine conditions.
Principle
Usually direct count of too many bacteria in a sample is difficult but the bacterial colonies may be used as a measure of the bacterial cells in the known serially dilution and plated out on an agar surface in such a way that single isolated bacteria form visible isolated colonies. However, colony-forming unit might actually consist of a chain of bacteria rather than a single bacterium if the organism often develops various cell configurations, such chains. Furthermore, a portion of the bacteria might be grouped together. Thus, typically refer to the process of using the plate count technique as a means of estimating the number of colony forming units (CFUs) in that known solution. Then further this figure use to extrapolate the total amount of CFUs present in the original sample.

The entire world is now facing a crisis situation. The problems encountered to address the crisis are interactive with each other and there is no easy way to find solution. The world’s population is expected to increase by 70 per cent by the end of year 2050 and there is need to step up agricultural production for a hunger free world. Nearly 70 per cent of the fresh water is used in agriculture sector. The demand for water in agriculture sector can be judged by the fact that several thousands of litres of water is required to produce one kilogram of food grains. Whatever maybe the source from which water is drawn for agriculture, all the sources depend upon the precipitation for replenishment on continuous basis. The precipitation patterns are not consistent and are known for greater variability from season to season, year to year and from region to region. These inconsistencies are further increasing due to recent threat of climate change triggered by the atmospheric pollution. The atmospheric pollution due to increase of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere is responsible for rise in temperatures. The rise in temperature induced changes in global pressure and wind systems. The consequence effect of it is changes in rainfall patterns, frequent occurrence of extreme weather events like floods, droughts, heat waves, intensified cyclonic activity. Rise in temperatures is increasing evaporation of water and water requirement of crops as well. There is considerable increase of the chemicals in the agriculture sector in the form of fertilizers, pesticides, fungicides and weedicides how to increase crop production and protection of crops from biotic and abiotic stresses. Consequently, there is increased pollution of water resources which may adversely affect the availability of fresh water, which is essential and critical input in agriculture for increasing agricultural production. It calls for efficient utilization of water resources in agriculture. More concerted efforts are required immediately to:
• Improve water use efficiency in agriculture
• Reduce pollution of water resources
• Conservation of fresh water resources
• Reduce emissions in agriculture sector and
• Prevent dwindling of fresh water resources

Agriculture sector alone uses nearly seventy per cent of fresh water in the world. Therefore, water use economy in the agriculture sector is becoming a necessity. Increasing flood production is possible reducing water used for irrigation if we can adopt precision irrigation (Fig.11.1).
The precision irrigation has to be practiced by providing water to the crop plants in its root zone to meet the water requirements. The precise irrigation can result in-
• Water saving
• Avoid weed control
• Preventing loss of water due to infiltration
• Preventing loss of water due to surface evaporation from the soil
• Minimise salinity problems
• Improving water use efficiency of crops
Traditionally farmers were practicing flood irrigation. It is a method of watering crops delivering to a field and allowing it to flow over the ground among the crops. It is a simple and inexpensive technique followed in less developed areas. Flood irrigation is not very efficient way as nearly 50 per cent of the water applied in the field will be lost through run-off, soil evaporation and other factors. Flood irrigation is only suitable in wet climates and not effective in sandy soils. It leads to water logging in clay soils. There are several types of flood irrigation such as basin, border, furrow and contour irrigation. Although flood irrigation is not very efficient, the water wastage can be avoided to some extent using some techniques

Taxidermy
The word ‘Taxidermy’ is derived from the Greek taxis meaning “fixing” or arrangement and derma meaning ‘skin’. It is possible to perform taxidermy of mammals, birds, fishes, reptiles and amphibians and procedure to perform taxidermy is also variable accordingly. In this case we will see the procedure applied to prepare a big cat (Tiger, lion, leopard etc.).
Skinning
To skin an animal make an inclusion from the chin along the belly to tip of tail, Then from paw to paw across the chest, and deal similarly with the hind legs. If they are done haphazard, The appearance of the skin will be completely wrecked. Place the carcass on its back and make an incision through the chin and carry it along the centre of the throat to the chest. There is a whorl of hair which runs from the chest along the belly to the vent, then carry the incision along from the vent to tip of tail. Fore- legs, after cutting through the ball of the pad the incision must be made exactly through the center of the white till it reaches the incision which is made from chin to tip of tail, the other foreleg is treated in the same way, both these incision should meet on the chest, and not end one above the other, Hind-legs after cutting through the ball of the pad. The incision runs behind the leg to end of the calcaneum, then turn inside the thigh. The hind leg, of course must be done in the same way. It will be better to mark with charcoal on proposed incision lines before the skinning carried out. After the pads have been skinned and turned back, also inside of the thigh and belly, there is not much need for the knife as the skin ought to be removed by what butchers term ‘ fisting ‘. Get someone to hold the leg to keep the carcass rigid, when the skinners pull the skin taut with his left hand and, with his right first clenched, process vigorously on the skin close to the

Veterinary anatomy is a backbone as well as basic discipline in the veterinary sciences at large. The new entrants of the first professional year of B.V.Sc. & A.H. get more exposure in gross anatomy, histo- architect models and developmental anatomy of their current curriculum in our country.
Laboratory demonstration plays a vital role module in virtual teaching and learning program of their better understanding of the subject. The visualization and memorization is the basic requirement for thorough understanding of the anatomy of the individual in medical sciences. The various method of teaching have been debated because it has own limitations. To improve the anatomical understanding the traditional way of using cadavers but with current scenario of restrictive laws which implemented by Veterinary Council of India (VCI) and other organizations viz, SPCA, PFA, CPCSEA/IAEC etc. The scarcity of specimens which are invited the other alternative way of keeping and preserving the specimens for laboratory teaching. Under the unusual circumstances, the normal conventional method of cadaver/specimen/organ preservation should be replaced by the advanced technologies for easy and interesting to learn. In the traditional curriculum method of anatomical specimens taught and learned by formalin fixed cadavers/specimens/tissues. Since, the conventional method creates health problem due to extensive use of formalin as preservative chemical for cadaver preservation. This method of preservation causes wet slippery tissues, respiratory irritation, topical allergic reactions, and students should wear gloves to protect themselves from the fixative like formaldehyde (act as a potential carcinogenic agent). However, the anatomists have been challenged for an alternative laboratory teaching aids in near future. In recent past, the alternative method has developed teaching materials by the innovative novel techniques like Plastination, corrosion cast, pneumatic air dried specimen etc.

Fixation is the first and utmost important step to take good histology of eye ball. The eye is a composite organ made up of layers of different consistencies that tend to separate during fixation and sectioning (Drury and Wallington, 1980).
Fixation (Davidson’s fluid)
Davidson’s fluid is an excellent fixative for fixation of whole eye ball but conventional 10% formalin causes artificial cellular shrinkage and poor cellular and nuclear resolution of the retina. Formaldehyde penetrates tissue well but takes more time because sclera stands as physical barriers that protects the retina and inhibit the penetration of fixative. Davidson’s fixative is acetic acid, alcohol- formalin based fixative in which alcohol denatured the protein by breaking hydrogen bonds and disturbing their tertiary structure and acetic acid increase the penetration. It has been advocated and widely used for the preservation of eye ball, maintaining retinal attachment during fixation and processing and providing better preservation of the retinal nuclear layer and sensory specialization of the rods and cones.

Confocal microscopy is a powerful tool that creates sharp images of a specimen that would otherwise appear blurred when viewed under a conventional microscope. This is achieved by excluding most of the light from the specimen that is not from the microscope’s focal plane.The image thus obtained has less haze and better contrast than that of a conventional microscope and represents a thin cross-section of the specimen. Laser scanning confocal microscopy has become an invaluable tool for imaging thin optical sections in living and fixed specimens ranging in thickness up to 100 micrometers. In fact the confocal microscope is often capable of revealing the presence of single molecule.
The modern confocal microscopes can be considered as completely integrated electronic systems, where the optical microscope plays a central role in a configuration that consists of one or more electronic detectors, a computer (for image display, processing, output, and storage) and several laser systems combined with wave length selection devices and a beam scanning assembly. In most advanced systems, integration between the various components is so through that the entire confocal microscope is often collectively referred to as a digital or video imaging, capable of producing electronic images.
Principle
Current instruments are highly modified from the earliest versions, but the principle of confocal imaging that was developed by Marvin Minsky is employed in all modern confocal microscopes. The image in a confocal microscope is achieved by scanning one or more focused beams of light, usually from a laser or arc-discharge source, across the specimen. This point of illumination is brought to focus in the specimen by the objective lens and laterally scanned using some form of scanning device under computer control. The sequences of points of light from the specimen are detected by a photomultiplier tube (PMT) through a pinhole (or in some cases, a slit) and the output from the

Protocol
1) The cultured cells at a density of 70,000/well in a 6 well plate or 35,000/ well in a 12 well plate are used for immunostaining.
2) The cells are washed with Dulbecco’s phosphate buffered saline (DPBS) for two times and the cells are fixed using 4% paraformaldehyde for 20 minutes at room temperature.
3) After fixation, the spent Paraformaldehyde is removed and the fixed cells are washed with 1000μl of 1x DPBS for 2 times by clockwise and anti-clockwise rotation of the plate slowly.
4) About 400μl of 3% blocking buffer was added to the wells and plate was covered with aluminum foil to prevent the exposure of light and stored at room temperature for 90 minutes.
5) After blocking, the cells are again washed once with DPBS. About 500 μl of primary antibody Oct-4 in the dilution of 1:40 is added to the well and stored at 4°C over night.
6) After overnight staining with primary antibody, the antibody solution is removed from the wells and washed with DPBS for 2 times.
7) Take 500 μl of secondary antibody anti-rabbit-FITC diluted with antibody buffer solution is added in the ratio of 1:200 and cover with aluminium foil and incubated for 90 minutes.
8) Secondary antibody is removed and washed with DPBS.

This chapter explores the multifaceted role of journal ratings in agricultural sciences, shedding light on their impact on research priorities, academic careers, and international scientific collaborations. It also examines the limitations of current rating systems, including their excessive reliance on metrics like the impact factor and the geographical biases that disadvantage researchers from developing countries.
2.1. Importance of Journal Ratings in Agricultural Sciences
Agricultural sciences encompass a broad range of disciplines, from crop genetics and soil science to agricultural economics and rural development. The field is pivotal for addressing global challenges such as food security, climate change, and sustainable development. Journal ratings serve as a critical tool for researchers, institutions, and funding agencies to evaluate the quality and relevance of scientific contributions.
2.1.1. Enhancing Research Visibility
High-rated journals often serve as the primary platforms for disseminating groundbreaking research. Publishing in these journals ensures greater visibility among peers, policymakers, & practitioners. This visibility is crucial in agricultural sciences, where translating research findings into practice can have immediate and far-reaching impacts on food systems and livelihoods. For instance, research on drought-resistant crops published in a high-impact journal is more likely to influence agricultural policies and attract investment in technology transfer

The current systems of journal rating and evaluation have long been criticized for their emphasis on narrow metrics, such as the journal impact factor (JIF), which often fail to reflect the broader contributions of academic work. Despite their widespread use, these systems frequently reinforce inequities within academia, marginalize underrepresented voices, and fail to prioritize the societal impacts of research (Fig. 13.1).
This chapter consolidates recommendations for reforming journal rating systems, emphasizing fairness, inclusivity, and societal impact. Drawing on existing literature and expert recommendations, we outline a comprehensive framework for designing a rating system that balances academic rigor with accessibility and relevance.
13.1. Revising Evaluation Metrics
The reliance on metrics such as JIF has perpetuated a cycle of prioritizing high-citation fields and well resourced institutions. Garfield (2006), the founder of the JIF, himself noted that it was never intended to serve as the singular measure of research quality, yet its dominance in academia persists. Critics argue that the JIF favors fields with inherently higher citation rates, sidelining disciplines such as the humanities, social sciences, and regional studies (Moher et al., 2018). Moreover, the JIF incentivizes salacious or sensational findings that attract citations, often at the expense of methodological rigor (Brembs et al., 2013). To address these issues, scholars have proposed alternative evaluation metrics that prioritize broader dimensions of impact. For example, the Leiden Manifesto (Hicks et al., 2015) outlines ten principles for responsible research evaluation,

The advancement of agricultural sciences depends on systems that are fair, inclusive, and innovative. The rating of agricultural journals requires unique considerations due to the interdisciplinary and regionally diverse nature of agricultural research. By addressing structural inequities, prioritizing accessibility, and fostering leadership, the global agricultural research community can ensure its continued relevance in solving the most pressing challenges of our time (Fig. 17.1).

17.1. Reforming Journal Ratings
A key pillar of advancing agricultural sciences lies in the reform of journal rating systems. Current systems often rely heavily on impact factors, a metric that, while useful, is not comprehensive. By moving toward a multidimensional evaluation framework, we can prioritize relevance, diversity of contributions, and societal impact alongside citation metrics. Reforms could include:
• Incorporating qualitative assessments of journals, such as their contributions to underrepresented research areas or regions.
• Promoting open-access journals that adhere to rigorous peer-review standards.

Individuals in a population can vary considerably on physical, cognitive, and behavioural traits. Examples include height, weight, intelligence, personality, etc. Individual differences may arise from variation in genes, environmental experiences, or a combination of both. It is generally accepted that individual differences in most traits are due to both genetic and environmental factors. To the extent that a trait is influenced by genetic (heritable) effects, phenotypic similarity is correlated with genetic relatedness.
The degree of resemblance among relatives allows for the estimation of genetic variance as well as heritability of a trait. We will now focus on how phenotypic correlation of relatives can be used to estimate the relative magnitude of genetic and environmental influences on trait variation
Partitioning of Phenotypic Values
We previously introduced the general model of Y = G +E where Y is the trait value, G is the genotypic value, and E is the environmental deviation that is assumed to have a mean of 0 so that E(Y ) = E(G). If we assume that the genetic and environmental components are independent, we have that the variance of Y is Var(Y ) = s 2 Y = s 2 G +s 2 E .
We previously focused on the decomposition of the genetic variance s 2 G into additive and dominance components, i.e., G = A+D

The global demand for high producer animals is rising, and cattle producers are looking for ways to improve productivity and efficiency. One method for developing cattle with enhanced traits is crossbreeding – combining the desirable qualities of two or more cattle breeds into one animal.
Crossbreeding allows cattle producers to take advantage of breed differences and heterosis while managing unwanted traits.
Implementing an effective breeding strategy can help cattle producers select for optimum performance in their herd.
Benefits of Crossbreeding Cattle
Crossbreeding offers commercial beef producers several advantages compared to using only straight-breed animals. Some key benefits include:
1. Heterosis – Crossbred animals exhibit hybrid vigour or heterosis, which is the increased performance for traits like growth rate, fertility, and longevity compared to purebred animals.
The heterosis effect results from the increase in heterozygosity or genetic diversity from combining divergent breeds. Heterosis levels are highest in first-cross animals (the initial cross between two pure breeds.
2. Complementarity – An additional advantage of crossbreeding is combining the strengths of two or more breeds to produce an animal with the ideal blend of traits.
For example, crossing a breed known for high intramuscular fat and marbling, like Angus, with a lean breed that excels in meat yield and growth, like Charolais, can result in an animal with both good marbling and leanness.
3. Breed Complementation – Crossbred animals also benefit from breed complementation. This occurs when the strengths in one breed offset or complement the weaknesses in the other breed. For example, British maternal breeds tend to be lower in milk production but exhibit excellent maternal behaviour

Understanding Immunogenetics
The study of genetic basis of the immune response is known as immunogenetics. The term was introduced with the discovery of ABO blood groups and were first demonstrated through the existence of “natural” antibodies i.e., isoantibodies. The broad field of immunogenetics include study of normal immunological pathways as well as identification of genetic variations that result in immune defects, which may facilitate detection of new therapeutic targets for immune diseases. Hence, understanding and subsequent manipulation of host immune response (immunomodulation) is the most precise and effective tool to reduce disease incidences and nullify the limitations associated with antibiotic treatment or vaccination. Therefore, breeding for disease resistance has gained considerable attention from researchers in the recent past.
Immune Response Genes
Often it was observed that individuals respond differently to same infectious agent. A possible explanation may be the genetic variability between them. Indeed, many studies have looked for associations between genes involved in immunity and disease outcome and it has been found that certain immune response (Ir) genes play the crucial role. This concept was discovered in the mid-1960s and this discovery introduced an apparently new level of antigen recognition whose diversity and specificity had to be explained in addition to those of familiar immunoglobulins. Hence immune response (Ir) genes were defined as antigenspecific genes that control the ability of an animal to raise an immune response, either humoral or cellular to a particular antigen .

Pharmacovigilance
Definition
Pharmacovigilance (PV) is defined as the science and activities related to the detection, assessment, understanding, and prevention of adverse effects or any other drug-related problems. The term combines the Greek word «pharmakon,» meaning drug, and the Latin «vigilare,» meaning to keep watch. Thus, pharmacovigilance focuses on monitoring the safety of medications after they have been authorized for use to ensure that their benefits outweigh any potential risks.
Aim of Pharmacovigilance
The primary aim of pharmacovigilance is to enhance patient safety and ensure the safe use of medicines by:
• Identifying Adverse Drug Reactions (ADRs): Collecting data on adverse effects associated with medications to understand their frequency, severity, and risk factors.
• Assessing Risks: Evaluating the risk-benefit profile of drugs in real-world settings beyond clinical trials.
• Preventing Harm: Implementing strategies to minimize risks associated with drug use, thereby protecting public health. • Improving Drug Safety: Continuously monitoring and analyzing data to improve the safety profiles of existing medications and inform regulatory actions.
Scope of Pharmacovigilance
The scope of pharmacovigilance encompasses a wide range of activities and responsibilities:
1. Data Collection
• Gathering information on ADRs from various sources, including healthcare professionals, patients, clinical trials, and post-marketing studies.
• Utilizing spontaneous reporting systems where healthcare providers report suspected ADRs.

If the earth’s surface is perfectly smooth, the wind flows parallel to the earth’s surface without any friction and the wind velocity will be uniform at different heights above the earth’s surface. As the earth’s surface is not smooth, it offers friction, slows down the movement of the wind near the surface. Therefore, the wind velocity increases very slowly with increase in height up to a certain level, and there after the wind velocity increases with increase in height more rapidly (Fig.5.1). When the wind speeds are measured at different heights above the ground and plotted on a graph with height Z in logarithmic scale on y-axis and wind velocity on x-axis, the wind velocity will be zero at certain height above the ground and thereafter the wind velocity uniformly increases with increase in height. The height at which the mean wind velocity is zero due to roughness is called roughness parameter (d). Therefore, the roughness parameter is defined as the height at which mean wind velocity is zero due to roughness of the earth’s surface. In a cropped soil, the crop also obstructs free movement of air. If wind profile measurements are taken in a cropped soil and are plotted on a graph with height on y-axis in logarithmic scale and mean wind velocity on the x-axis, the mean wind velocity will be zero at a height above the roughness parameter. The difference in height (Z-d) at which the wind velocity is zero when the height is plotted on logarithmic scale is called zero plane displacement (Z0). Therefore, the zero plane displacement can be defined as the height by which the roughness parameter increases due to presence of the crop (Fig.5.2).

Forest microclimate is the climate within a forest in contrast to a nearby open area created by a clearing or pasture. A robust observation is that less sunlight reaches the ground in a forest than in open areas, but this depends on the size of the clearing, the height of trees surrounding the clearing, and the location in the clearing (relative to the edge) where measurements are obtained. Daytime temperature is generally lower in forest than in open areas, with greatest differences during the growing season; but this, too, is subject to edge effects and whether the canopy is sparse or dense. Wind near the ground is less than in exposed areas or above the canopy. Another point is that there are various microclimates within a forest canopy. The environment of the forest overstory differs from that of the understory, and this has important consequences for species conservation and protection from climate change. The forest microclimate has important implications for habitat and biodiversity conservation and may act to buffer forest understory organisms from the severity of climate change. Forest microclimates differ not only in contrast with open land, but also vertically with position in the canopy (Fig. 8.1).

There is an increased use of Glass houses and poly houses in commercial agriculture. The glass houses and poly houses provide a controlled environment for plants throughout the year. Some of the aspects of related to the advantages of Glass houses and poly houses are highlighted in the following text:
9.1. Glass houses
Glass houses are also referred as greenhouses. The glass prevents harmful ultraviolet radiations. The glass is transparent to solar radiations of wavelengths up to 300 nm and does not allow long-wave radiations to pass through it (Fig.9.1). Therefore, the Glass houses maintain higher temperature and high relative humidity during daytime as well as nighttime and offer the following advantages:
9.1.1. Controlled Environment: Glass houses facilitate regulation of temperature,
humidity, and light intensity, creating optimum environment for growing various plant species. This is especially beneficial for tropical and sub-tropical plants that require specific conditions to grow and survive.
9.1.2. Protection from Pests and Diseases: The enclosed glass house protects
plants from pests and diseases. The glass house also protects the plants from harsh weather conditions thereby minimizing risk of infestations and environmental stresses. Fig. 9.1: Microclimate management in Glass house
9.1.3. Extended Growing Season: By maintaining stable climate, glass houses
enable cultivation of plants that may not survive outdoors in certain climates thereby extending the growing season for sensitive species.
9.1.4. Research and Conservation: Botanical gardens often use glass houses for
research purposes, studying plant growth, genetics and breeding. The glass houses will also serve as a means for conserving rare or endangered plant species by providing stable environment for propagation. The advantage of glass houses is that the structure has long life span.
9.2. Poly houses
The poly houses are constructed using polythene material. The poly houses protect the plants from wind, cold weather, hail storms, extreme temperatures, insects and pests. The polythene house farming is a popular greenhouse technology due to its low cost of construction and maintenance. Generally, heat accumulation (70 to 75 per cent of solar energy) takes place inside the polyhouse. Solar radiation is allowed to pass through the polythene material and the long wave radiation cannot escape through polythene. The benefits of poly houses are:

The fate of smoke from a wild land fire depends in large part on the airflow carrying it away from the fire which can involve a complex interaction of eddies that may occur near the ground or expand beyond the atmospheric mixed layer (Fig.11.1). The buoyancy of smoke and ambient atmospheric conditions determines how high and how quickly the smoke rises, and thus where it travels.
The smoke plume distribution is affected by number of factors as indicated below:
• Elevation: The smoke plumes at higher elevations disperse the smoke particles more vertically while plumes from lover elevations disperse more horizontally.
• Temperature: The large difference between the smoke and surrounding air affects the Plume dynamics. The buoyancy force increases the vertical velocity of the particles, while heat diffusion increases surrounding air temperature.
• Moisture: The presence of moisture can modify the distribution of smoke and chemistry of smoke particles.
• Topography: Topography can influence emissions that remain within the mixing zone.
• Atmospheric stability: Atmospheric stability can affect the distribution of smoke.

14.1. Slope
It is a crucial topographic factor that affects water drainage, erosion and accessibility of agricultural machinery. Steep slopes increase the risk of soil erosion, and water run-off requiring erosion control measures such as contour ploughing or terracing. Slope also affects the availability of sunlight, as steeper slopes may cast shadows and influence microclimates within a field.
14.2. Altitude / Elevation
Elevation is the vertical distance of a point or location above a reference point, often mean sea level. It influences temperature, atmospheric pressure, and the types of crops that can be grown in an area. Higher altitudes generally experience cooler temperatures, which may limit the choice of crops that can thrive. Elevation affects the length of the growing season and influences the choice of appropriate crop varieties. In summary, elevation is an absolute measure of the vertical distance above a reference point (such as MSL), while it is a relative measure that describes the variation in elevation within a specific area or region. Elevation provides information about the height of a point, whereas it provides insights into the topographic features and slopes of a given agricultural landscape. Both elevation and relief are important considerations in agriculture as they influence factors such as water drainage, temperature gradients, and suitability for specific crops.
14.3. Aspect
Aspect refers to orientation of the slope (north, south, east or west). It affects the distribution of sun light; wind patterns and temperature gradients in a field. In the northern hemisphere, the north side of slope is often shaded while the southern side receives more solar radiation and heat, creating warmer microclimates and potentially influencing the choice of crops or planting strategies. Aspect can also impact the risk of frost or cold air drainage in certain regions. Whereas, in the southern hemisphere, the south side slopes get shaded and north facing slopes receive more solar radiation.
14.4. Relief
Relief refers to the variation in altitude between different points. It is a relative measure on changes in altitude across a particular landscape or agricultural area. The valley slopes are preferred sites for agriculture in mountain regions due to several reasons:
• The valley slopes offer relatively flatter terrain, making it easier for farming activities such as cultivation, irrigation and mechanization.
• The valleys tend to have better access to water resources such as rivers or streams which can be used for irrigation water.
• The valley slopes provide good sun exposure and protection from strong winds creating favourable microclimates for crop growth
• The natural drainage patterns of valleys help preventing water logging and ensure better water management.

16.1. Global Warming
The industrial revolution from mid 18th century is recognized as the primary cause of atmospheric pollution. Some of the gases like CO2, Chlorofluorocarbons, methane, nitrous oxide etc. are getting released into the atmosphere in greater volumes by combustion of fossil fuels. These gases can absorb the heat radiation leading to increase in air temperature and are called as greenhouse gases. When there is no vertical movement of air, these gases can accumulate near the ground and causes serious health hazards (Fig.16.2). Fig. 16.2: Global warming Under unstable conditions, there will be more convection and vertical movement of air that can prevent pollution near ground level. These air pollutants can be transmitted and carried away to long distance by strong winds. So, the air pollution which defies local, regional or even continental boundaries can cause atmospheric pollution and global warming. Therefore, air pollution control is not an issue for just one location or region and is now a matter of global concern.
16.2. Climate Change
As the greenhouse gases are spreading into the atmosphere, there is gradual increase in the air temperature and if no control measures are uniformly adopted
